00:00:29.730 --> 00:00:43.890
This is the first sermon in a three-part series, and we will be looking at the lives of three Bible characters, Moses, Joseph and Mary, and see how they found favor with God.
00:00:44.530 --> 00:00:49.810
So this sermon series is entitled Found Favor.
00:00:50.450 --> 00:00:55.090
Today we'll look at how Moses found favor with God.
00:00:55.649 --> 00:01:02.130
Let's read Exodus chapter 33, verse 11 to verse 18.
00:01:02.450 --> 00:01:05.890
I'm reading from the English Standard Version of the Bible.
00:01:06.210 --> 00:01:14.689
It says, Thus the Lord used to speak to Moses face to face as a man speaks to his friend.
00:01:15.009 --> 00:01:24.049
When Moses turned again into the camp, his assistant Joshua, the son of Nun, a young man, would not depart from the tent.
00:01:24.450 --> 00:01:36.049
Moses said to the Lord, See, you say to me, Bring up this people, but you have not let me know whom you will send with me.
00:01:36.609 --> 00:01:45.969
Yet you have said, I know you by name, and you have also found favor in my sight.
00:01:46.450 --> 00:01:59.969
Now therefore, if I have found favor in your sight, please show me now your ways, that I may know you in order to find favor in your sight.
00:02:00.769 --> 00:02:03.890
Consider too that this nation is your people.
00:02:05.090 --> 00:02:11.810
And he said, My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.
00:02:12.689 --> 00:02:19.810
And he said to him, If your presence will not go with me, do not bring us up from here.
00:02:20.370 --> 00:02:27.090
For how shall it be known that I have found favour in your sight, I and your people?
00:02:27.569 --> 00:02:39.169
Is it not in your going with us, so that we are distinct, and I and your people from every other people on the face of the earth?
00:02:40.370 --> 00:02:53.169
And the Lord said to Moses, This very thing that you have spoken I will do, for you have found favor in my sight, and I know you by name.
00:02:53.729 --> 00:02:58.210
Moses said, Please show me your glory.
00:02:59.650 --> 00:03:04.289
Five times we see the phrase found favor in this passage.
00:03:04.610 --> 00:03:10.210
In verse 13, verse 14, verse 16, and verse 17.
00:03:10.930 --> 00:03:24.689
And today we'll see what finding favor looks like and how we can live with an expectation and anticipation of God's favor in our lives.
00:03:24.930 --> 00:03:30.770
So four things, and number one is communication with God.
00:03:31.810 --> 00:03:37.090
Let's see the interaction between Moses and the Lord.
00:03:37.409 --> 00:03:42.210
We see this in verse 11, 12, 14, 15, and 17.
00:03:42.770 --> 00:03:49.490
In verse 11, the Lord used to speak to Moses face to face as a man speaks to his friend.
00:03:49.810 --> 00:03:51.169
Isn't that awesome?
00:03:51.490 --> 00:03:55.090
Close, intimate, friendship, relationship with God.
00:03:55.409 --> 00:04:01.490
In verse 12, Moses says to the Lord, see you say to me.
00:04:01.810 --> 00:04:05.409
Verse 14, and he, God, said.
00:04:05.969 --> 00:04:10.770
Verse 15, and he, Moses, said to him.
00:04:11.250 --> 00:04:15.490
And verse 17, and the Lord said to Moses.
00:04:16.129 --> 00:04:21.490
Clearly we see in this passage an ongoing communication, relationship with God.
00:04:21.569 --> 00:04:22.930
And that's what prayer is.
00:04:23.169 --> 00:04:26.449
Prayer is talking and listening to God.
00:04:26.930 --> 00:04:36.289
Oh, what a wonderful privilege we have that we can pray without ceasing, that we can talk to God and we can listen to Him.
00:04:36.689 --> 00:04:46.769
Like Jesus said in John chapter 10, verse 27, my sheep hear my voice, I know them, and they follow me.
00:04:47.009 --> 00:04:51.329
For us to follow Him, we need to recognize His voice.
00:04:51.569 --> 00:04:55.730
To recognize His voice, we need to get to know Him.
00:04:55.970 --> 00:04:59.649
And I want to encourage us to develop our prayer life.
00:04:59.889 --> 00:05:07.649
Prayer is an ongoing conversation with God, speaking to God and listening to Him.
00:05:07.970 --> 00:05:10.769
An interaction between us and God.
00:05:11.009 --> 00:05:18.129
And God wants us to walk with Him, to talk with Him, to spend time with Him, to get to know Him.
00:05:18.370 --> 00:05:27.329
So, first of all, we've seen that favor with God means that you can have an ongoing communication with Him.
00:05:27.649 --> 00:05:33.089
Number two, God knows us by name.
00:05:33.730 --> 00:05:39.810
Listen to Exodus chapter 33, verse 12 and verse 17.
00:05:40.050 --> 00:05:50.129
In verse 12, Moses says, Yet you have said, I know you by name, and you have found favor in my sight.
00:05:50.290 --> 00:06:03.730
And then verse 17, the Lord says to Moses, The very thing that you have spoken I will do, for you have found favor in my sight, and I know you by name.
00:06:04.050 --> 00:06:10.129
Now obviously, God is knows everything, He's omniscient, He knows everything about us.
00:06:10.370 --> 00:06:13.009
Obviously, He knows our names.
00:06:13.569 --> 00:06:18.290
But let's think about that phrase from a slightly different perspective.
00:06:18.610 --> 00:06:25.009
Imagine a celebrity or royalty knowing your name.
00:06:25.170 --> 00:06:29.730
Well, I want to tell you today that God knows us by name.
00:06:30.050 --> 00:06:34.529
Listen to what he says in Isaiah chapter 43, verse 1 and 2.
00:06:34.689 --> 00:06:42.129
He says, I have redeemed you, I have called you by name, you are mine.
00:06:42.930 --> 00:06:45.170
Friend, God knows you by name.
00:06:45.410 --> 00:06:52.769
He knew Zacchaeus as he walked under the tree and he looked up and he said, Zacchaeus, today I'm coming to your house for tea.
00:06:53.009 --> 00:06:58.209
When he went to Zacchaeus's house, he said, Today salvation has come to this house.
00:06:58.529 --> 00:07:07.089
God knows us by name, and we have this wonderful confidence that he knows us by name, that he's called us by name.
00:07:07.329 --> 00:07:12.449
We are his and he wants to bring salvation into our lives.
00:07:13.089 --> 00:07:21.810
So, number two, walking in God's favor or finding favor with God is knowing that He is aware of everything in your life.
00:07:22.129 --> 00:07:26.370
He knows you by name and He's called you out by name.
00:07:26.769 --> 00:07:29.410
He is looking out for you.
00:07:29.649 --> 00:07:32.209
Thank you, Jesus, that you know us by name.
00:07:32.370 --> 00:07:36.850
Thank you, Father, that nothing escapes your sight.
00:07:37.170 --> 00:07:49.329
Holy Spirit, thank you that you're drawing us into a ever-increasing dependency, joyful relationship with God as his children.
00:07:49.889 --> 00:07:58.370
Number three, the third thing about walking in God's favor is that God reveals himself to us.
00:07:59.170 --> 00:08:03.089
Let's look at verse 13 and verse 18 together.
00:08:03.329 --> 00:08:13.490
In verse 13, we see God reveals his ways, and then verse 18, we see God is going to reveal his glory.
00:08:13.970 --> 00:08:19.970
Now, Moses knew that if we understand God's ways, then we will see his glory.
00:08:20.449 --> 00:08:24.050
God's ways come before God's glory.
00:08:24.290 --> 00:08:32.210
It's important for us if we want to experience the power and presence of God that we live his ways.
00:08:32.529 --> 00:08:34.370
Let's look at verse 13.
00:08:34.610 --> 00:08:42.850
Moses says, Please show me now your ways, so that he can walk in favor with God.
00:08:43.490 --> 00:08:51.889
And then verse 18, Moses ends this conversation by saying, Please show me your glory.
00:08:52.450 --> 00:08:59.649
Now I think that it's so important for us not to just seek the gifts, but to seek the giver.
00:09:00.129 --> 00:09:04.529
Not just to seek the provision, but to seek the provider.
00:09:04.929 --> 00:09:21.169
As we get to know him and his ways, as we want a close relationship with him, as we live in a way that wants to please him, then he will release his power and his presence and his glory in our lives.
00:09:21.570 --> 00:09:33.649
The psalmist in Psalm 103, verse 7 says, He made known his ways to Moses, his acts to the people of Israel.
00:09:33.970 --> 00:09:39.490
Let's not just be those who seek his acts, let's be those who seek his ways.
00:09:39.649 --> 00:09:42.210
Let's live in a way that pleases him.
00:09:43.009 --> 00:09:47.490
Now, this evidently was a problem when Jesus ministered on the earth.
00:09:47.730 --> 00:09:55.330
People wanted the provision, the bread and the fish, all the miracles, but they didn't want to know him as Lord and Savior.
00:09:55.490 --> 00:10:03.009
And the most important thing for us is for us to know him as our Lord and Savior.
00:10:03.649 --> 00:10:11.009
His acts draw us to know him as a person, his ways.
00:10:11.250 --> 00:10:16.529
Let's get to know his ways, and then we can expect to see his glory.
00:10:16.929 --> 00:10:20.210
He wants to reveal himself to us.
00:10:20.610 --> 00:10:27.009
Number four, my final point is we can live aware of God's presence.
00:10:27.570 --> 00:10:31.250
Let's read Exodus 33, verse 14 to 16.
00:10:31.490 --> 00:10:35.330
And he said, My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.
00:10:35.570 --> 00:10:40.610
And he said to him, If your presence will not go with me, do not bring us up from here.
00:10:40.929 --> 00:10:46.450
For how shall it be known that I have found favor in your sight, I and your people?
00:10:47.090 --> 00:10:57.250
Is it not in your going with us, so that we are distinct, I and your people, from every other people on the face of the earth?
00:10:57.809 --> 00:11:02.529
God's presence is the distinguishing factor in our lives.
00:11:03.169 --> 00:11:09.090
As the church, we're not just a social organization, a club, or a society of friends.
00:11:09.330 --> 00:11:11.330
We are the body of Christ.
00:11:11.649 --> 00:11:17.889
And his presence in us should be a distinguishing mark.
00:11:18.129 --> 00:11:24.210
When people come into our meetings or our gatherings, they should sense God's presence among us.
00:11:24.529 --> 00:11:27.730
And God wants us to live in that favor.
00:11:28.289 --> 00:11:49.570
He wants us to live with that expectation that there's times in our worship, in our interaction with one another, in our prayer, in hearing God's word, that his very presence is evident for purpose and for power, to bring healing, to bring freedom, to bring change in our lives.
00:11:50.210 --> 00:12:02.769
So today we've seen that you and I can live with an anticipation for and a appreciation of God's favor in our lives.
00:12:02.929 --> 00:12:08.769
We've looked at Moses and we've seen that he had favor with God.
00:12:09.250 --> 00:12:13.809
We too can walk in that favor in our lives.
00:12:14.370 --> 00:12:15.730
Let's pray together.
00:12:15.970 --> 00:12:19.250
Father God, thank you that you are at work in our lives.
00:12:19.409 --> 00:12:25.649
Thank you that we can live with an appreciation of and anticipation of your favor in our lives.
00:12:25.970 --> 00:12:28.850
That we can communicate with you.
00:12:29.330 --> 00:12:31.570
That we can get to know your ways.
00:12:31.889 --> 00:12:35.730
So that you can reveal your glory in our lives.
00:12:35.970 --> 00:12:39.730
Thank you that we can live knowing that you are with us.
00:12:40.210 --> 00:12:45.250
And we long for more of your presence and power in our lives.
00:12:46.049 --> 00:12:48.370
Please, Lord, show us your glory.
00:12:48.610 --> 00:12:51.009
We ask this in Jesus' name.
00:12:51.330 --> 00:12:51.889
Amen.
00:00:29.730 --> 00:00:43.890
This is the first sermon in a three-part series, and we will be looking at the lives of three Bible characters, Moses, Joseph and Mary, and see how they found favor with God.
00:00:44.530 --> 00:00:49.810
So this sermon series is entitled Found Favor.
00:00:50.450 --> 00:00:55.090
Today we'll look at how Moses found favor with God.
00:00:55.649 --> 00:01:02.130
Let's read Exodus chapter 33, verse 11 to verse 18.
00:01:02.450 --> 00:01:05.890
I'm reading from the English Standard Version of the Bible.
00:01:06.210 --> 00:01:14.689
It says, Thus the Lord used to speak to Moses face to face as a man speaks to his friend.
00:01:15.009 --> 00:01:24.049
When Moses turned again into the camp, his assistant Joshua, the son of Nun, a young man, would not depart from the tent.
00:01:24.450 --> 00:01:36.049
Moses said to the Lord, See, you say to me, Bring up this people, but you have not let me know whom you will send with me.
00:01:36.609 --> 00:01:45.969
Yet you have said, I know you by name, and you have also found favor in my sight.
00:01:46.450 --> 00:01:59.969
Now therefore, if I have found favor in your sight, please show me now your ways, that I may know you in order to find favor in your sight.
00:02:00.769 --> 00:02:03.890
Consider too that this nation is your people.
00:02:05.090 --> 00:02:11.810
And he said, My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.
00:02:12.689 --> 00:02:19.810
And he said to him, If your presence will not go with me, do not bring us up from here.
00:02:20.370 --> 00:02:27.090
For how shall it be known that I have found favour in your sight, I and your people?
00:02:27.569 --> 00:02:39.169
Is it not in your going with us, so that we are distinct, and I and your people from every other people on the face of the earth?
00:02:40.370 --> 00:02:53.169
And the Lord said to Moses, This very thing that you have spoken I will do, for you have found favor in my sight, and I know you by name.
00:02:53.729 --> 00:02:58.210
Moses said, Please show me your glory.
00:02:59.650 --> 00:03:04.289
Five times we see the phrase found favor in this passage.
00:03:04.610 --> 00:03:10.210
In verse 13, verse 14, verse 16, and verse 17.
00:03:10.930 --> 00:03:24.689
And today we'll see what finding favor looks like and how we can live with an expectation and anticipation of God's favor in our lives.
00:03:24.930 --> 00:03:30.770
So four things, and number one is communication with God.
00:03:31.810 --> 00:03:37.090
Let's see the interaction between Moses and the Lord.
00:03:37.409 --> 00:03:42.210
We see this in verse 11, 12, 14, 15, and 17.
00:03:42.770 --> 00:03:49.490
In verse 11, the Lord used to speak to Moses face to face as a man speaks to his friend.
00:03:49.810 --> 00:03:51.169
Isn't that awesome?
00:03:51.490 --> 00:03:55.090
Close, intimate, friendship, relationship with God.
00:03:55.409 --> 00:04:01.490
In verse 12, Moses says to the Lord, see you say to me.
00:04:01.810 --> 00:04:05.409
Verse 14, and he, God, said.
00:04:05.969 --> 00:04:10.770
Verse 15, and he, Moses, said to him.
00:04:11.250 --> 00:04:15.490
And verse 17, and the Lord said to Moses.
00:04:16.129 --> 00:04:21.490
Clearly we see in this passage an ongoing communication, relationship with God.
00:04:21.569 --> 00:04:22.930
And that's what prayer is.
00:04:23.169 --> 00:04:26.449
Prayer is talking and listening to God.
00:04:26.930 --> 00:04:36.289
Oh, what a wonderful privilege we have that we can pray without ceasing, that we can talk to God and we can listen to Him.
00:04:36.689 --> 00:04:46.769
Like Jesus said in John chapter 10, verse 27, my sheep hear my voice, I know them, and they follow me.
00:04:47.009 --> 00:04:51.329
For us to follow Him, we need to recognize His voice.
00:04:51.569 --> 00:04:55.730
To recognize His voice, we need to get to know Him.
00:04:55.970 --> 00:04:59.649
And I want to encourage us to develop our prayer life.
00:04:59.889 --> 00:05:07.649
Prayer is an ongoing conversation with God, speaking to God and listening to Him.
00:05:07.970 --> 00:05:10.769
An interaction between us and God.
00:05:11.009 --> 00:05:18.129
And God wants us to walk with Him, to talk with Him, to spend time with Him, to get to know Him.
00:05:18.370 --> 00:05:27.329
So, first of all, we've seen that favor with God means that you can have an ongoing communication with Him.
00:05:27.649 --> 00:05:33.089
Number two, God knows us by name.
00:05:33.730 --> 00:05:39.810
Listen to Exodus chapter 33, verse 12 and verse 17.
00:05:40.050 --> 00:05:50.129
In verse 12, Moses says, Yet you have said, I know you by name, and you have found favor in my sight.
00:05:50.290 --> 00:06:03.730
And then verse 17, the Lord says to Moses, The very thing that you have spoken I will do, for you have found favor in my sight, and I know you by name.
00:06:04.050 --> 00:06:10.129
Now obviously, God is knows everything, He's omniscient, He knows everything about us.
00:06:10.370 --> 00:06:13.009
Obviously, He knows our names.
00:06:13.569 --> 00:06:18.290
But let's think about that phrase from a slightly different perspective.
00:06:18.610 --> 00:06:25.009
Imagine a celebrity or royalty knowing your name.
00:06:25.170 --> 00:06:29.730
Well, I want to tell you today that God knows us by name.
00:06:30.050 --> 00:06:34.529
Listen to what he says in Isaiah chapter 43, verse 1 and 2.
00:06:34.689 --> 00:06:42.129
He says, I have redeemed you, I have called you by name, you are mine.
00:06:42.930 --> 00:06:45.170
Friend, God knows you by name.
00:06:45.410 --> 00:06:52.769
He knew Zacchaeus as he walked under the tree and he looked up and he said, Zacchaeus, today I'm coming to your house for tea.
00:06:53.009 --> 00:06:58.209
When he went to Zacchaeus's house, he said, Today salvation has come to this house.
00:06:58.529 --> 00:07:07.089
God knows us by name, and we have this wonderful confidence that he knows us by name, that he's called us by name.
00:07:07.329 --> 00:07:12.449
We are his and he wants to bring salvation into our lives.
00:07:13.089 --> 00:07:21.810
So, number two, walking in God's favor or finding favor with God is knowing that He is aware of everything in your life.
00:07:22.129 --> 00:07:26.370
He knows you by name and He's called you out by name.
00:07:26.769 --> 00:07:29.410
He is looking out for you.
00:07:29.649 --> 00:07:32.209
Thank you, Jesus, that you know us by name.
00:07:32.370 --> 00:07:36.850
Thank you, Father, that nothing escapes your sight.
00:07:37.170 --> 00:07:49.329
Holy Spirit, thank you that you're drawing us into a ever-increasing dependency, joyful relationship with God as his children.
00:07:49.889 --> 00:07:58.370
Number three, the third thing about walking in God's favor is that God reveals himself to us.
00:07:59.170 --> 00:08:03.089
Let's look at verse 13 and verse 18 together.
00:08:03.329 --> 00:08:13.490
In verse 13, we see God reveals his ways, and then verse 18, we see God is going to reveal his glory.
00:08:13.970 --> 00:08:19.970
Now, Moses knew that if we understand God's ways, then we will see his glory.
00:08:20.449 --> 00:08:24.050
God's ways come before God's glory.
00:08:24.290 --> 00:08:32.210
It's important for us if we want to experience the power and presence of God that we live his ways.
00:08:32.529 --> 00:08:34.370
Let's look at verse 13.
00:08:34.610 --> 00:08:42.850
Moses says, Please show me now your ways, so that he can walk in favor with God.
00:08:43.490 --> 00:08:51.889
And then verse 18, Moses ends this conversation by saying, Please show me your glory.
00:08:52.450 --> 00:08:59.649
Now I think that it's so important for us not to just seek the gifts, but to seek the giver.
00:09:00.129 --> 00:09:04.529
Not just to seek the provision, but to seek the provider.
00:09:04.929 --> 00:09:21.169
As we get to know him and his ways, as we want a close relationship with him, as we live in a way that wants to please him, then he will release his power and his presence and his glory in our lives.
00:09:21.570 --> 00:09:33.649
The psalmist in Psalm 103, verse 7 says, He made known his ways to Moses, his acts to the people of Israel.
00:09:33.970 --> 00:09:39.490
Let's not just be those who seek his acts, let's be those who seek his ways.
00:09:39.649 --> 00:09:42.210
Let's live in a way that pleases him.
00:09:43.009 --> 00:09:47.490
Now, this evidently was a problem when Jesus ministered on the earth.
00:09:47.730 --> 00:09:55.330
People wanted the provision, the bread and the fish, all the miracles, but they didn't want to know him as Lord and Savior.
00:09:55.490 --> 00:10:03.009
And the most important thing for us is for us to know him as our Lord and Savior.
00:10:03.649 --> 00:10:11.009
His acts draw us to know him as a person, his ways.
00:10:11.250 --> 00:10:16.529
Let's get to know his ways, and then we can expect to see his glory.
00:10:16.929 --> 00:10:20.210
He wants to reveal himself to us.
00:10:20.610 --> 00:10:27.009
Number four, my final point is we can live aware of God's presence.
00:10:27.570 --> 00:10:31.250
Let's read Exodus 33, verse 14 to 16.
00:10:31.490 --> 00:10:35.330
And he said, My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.
00:10:35.570 --> 00:10:40.610
And he said to him, If your presence will not go with me, do not bring us up from here.
00:10:40.929 --> 00:10:46.450
For how shall it be known that I have found favor in your sight, I and your people?
00:10:47.090 --> 00:10:57.250
Is it not in your going with us, so that we are distinct, I and your people, from every other people on the face of the earth?
00:10:57.809 --> 00:11:02.529
God's presence is the distinguishing factor in our lives.
00:11:03.169 --> 00:11:09.090
As the church, we're not just a social organization, a club, or a society of friends.
00:11:09.330 --> 00:11:11.330
We are the body of Christ.
00:11:11.649 --> 00:11:17.889
And his presence in us should be a distinguishing mark.
00:11:18.129 --> 00:11:24.210
When people come into our meetings or our gatherings, they should sense God's presence among us.
00:11:24.529 --> 00:11:27.730
And God wants us to live in that favor.
00:11:28.289 --> 00:11:49.570
He wants us to live with that expectation that there's times in our worship, in our interaction with one another, in our prayer, in hearing God's word, that his very presence is evident for purpose and for power, to bring healing, to bring freedom, to bring change in our lives.
00:11:50.210 --> 00:12:02.769
So today we've seen that you and I can live with an anticipation for and a appreciation of God's favor in our lives.
00:12:02.929 --> 00:12:08.769
We've looked at Moses and we've seen that he had favor with God.
00:12:09.250 --> 00:12:13.809
We too can walk in that favor in our lives.
00:12:14.370 --> 00:12:15.730
Let's pray together.
00:12:15.970 --> 00:12:19.250
Father God, thank you that you are at work in our lives.
00:12:19.409 --> 00:12:25.649
Thank you that we can live with an appreciation of and anticipation of your favor in our lives.
00:12:25.970 --> 00:12:28.850
That we can communicate with you.
00:12:29.330 --> 00:12:31.570
That we can get to know your ways.
00:12:31.889 --> 00:12:35.730
So that you can reveal your glory in our lives.
00:12:35.970 --> 00:12:39.730
Thank you that we can live knowing that you are with us.
00:12:40.210 --> 00:12:45.250
And we long for more of your presence and power in our lives.
00:12:46.049 --> 00:12:48.370
Please, Lord, show us your glory.
00:12:48.610 --> 00:12:51.009
We ask this in Jesus' name.
00:12:51.330 --> 00:12:51.889
Amen.
