00:00:01
Speaker 1: Hey, it's Speedy, and this is Rick and Bubba's Greatest Hits, flashing back through 31 years of radio gold every Saturday morning, wherever you get your podcasts.
00:00:10
Speaker 2: It's Rick and Bubba's Greatest Hits. Rick and Bubba, Rick and Bubba.
00:00:16
Speaker 1: So, you know, we were doing the show on this day 18 years ago, and we will do the tribute, and you will hear and see some of the– the moments that none of us will ever forget.
00:00:31
Speaker 2: I hope we don't forget.
00:00:31
Speaker 1: 18 years ago, and we'll take you through that. You'll hear our reaction as it happened. We do this, I think we've done it just about every year for the last 18 years. That's also, for those of you that hear the national anthem that starts the big show, meaning the part when the whole team's together, that started as something we started doing after the attack. So, We've been doing that for 18 years, but that's what it originally was tied to. And, Bubba, I remember that day pretty vividly.
00:01:04
Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, we, and I know Speedy was talking about it earlier, we were in a different studio at the time. Technology wasn't near what it is today. We had a little bitty TV over in the corner. And I don't even know if we had it on that morning to begin with. But I know after we had Prater on and we were talking about the weather, He said, hey, have y'all seen what's going on in New York City? A plane or something has hit one of the World Trade Centers. And that's when we either cut it on or started paying attention to it, one.
00:01:35
Speaker 4: Or the other.
00:01:36
Speaker 1: But thinking nothing about it. I mean, we thought about it, but we thought it was a personal craft.
00:01:40
Speaker 2: Or something like that.
00:01:41
Speaker 3: Yeah, or a tourist helicopter or something. We really didn't know what it was. And while we were talking to him, the other one hit. And we saw it live on the air, and then we knew, man, we got something going on here. And, you know, immediately you think, who is doing this? And, of course, you'll hear in the great, great little bit that Speedy added together different things, and there's different theories being kicked about. But, you know, at that moment, I'm thinking, how many planes are out there?
00:02:14
Speaker 1: It changed. Uh, think about how many things that, uh, your whole, your whole experience at the airport was changed by everything, uh, uh, 18 years ago. And it was a very eerie, eerie feeling. Uh, and there were certainly a lot of uncertainty. I remember, I remember getting on the phone with, you know, my wife and, you know, talking to her about it and people praying and, and, uh, it was, um, it was a very, very scary day.
00:02:38
Speaker 5: Yeah.
00:02:39
Speaker 6: And then to, either have kids that were so young they don't remember or that weren't born, they don't know life without that. I mean, that's their post-9-11. They don't understand what life was like prior to then and just the way things have changed.
00:02:54
Speaker 7: Every heart that is broken.
00:03:02
Speaker 1: And great I We make our way back 21 minutes past the hour. 18 years ago, America attacked on 9-11 and we'll play back in the next segment as it unfolded here on the air. And you'll get visuals on our YouTube channel, uh, as well to go with that.
00:03:22
Speaker 6: Yeah.
00:03:22
Speaker 1: But looking at the, at the timeline, uh, from 18 years ago today, it really, it really hits home. When you think about that, uh, flight 11 and flight 175 have taken off and, um, By the way, the flight attendants on Flight 11 have just alerted ground personnel that the plane has been hijacked. So they're thinking that they're in for some long ordeal, not knowing that the way we treat hijacking, as Bubba said earlier, is about to change forever. And you just kind of follow through that timeline as things were happening. So we were live on the air, and you'll hear all of us talking about that coming up in the next segment. Greg, how did you find out about it? Because you guys didn't work here. I was going to ask you and Hams and Adler.
00:04:04
Speaker 7: I was actually in a bucket truck leaving Anniston and heading towards Heflin. We were working up there. And I was in the truck by myself. Somebody must have been off that day. But anyway, I was just listening on the radio. And like y'all, I thought a small plane. They had reported a plane had hit the Trade Center, North Tower, I think. And I thought, well, that's probably just a small plane.
00:04:24
Speaker 1: But by the time I got there, the other one had been hit, and they were reporting that the Pentagon was on fire.
00:04:29
Speaker 6: Mm-hmm.
00:04:30
Speaker 7: So I remember there was an old store up there in Fruithurst, Alabama, and they had old television in there, and we went in and watched on TV. But, yeah, I remember it was a real pretty day, real sunny when we were out.
00:04:40
Speaker 2: It was.
00:04:40
Speaker 5: Nice fall day.
00:04:41
Speaker 2: Hams, how'd you find out?
00:04:43
Speaker 4: I was actually at the house in Gadsden. I was four months from getting married.
00:04:49
Speaker 2: Wow.
00:04:49
Speaker 4: So that kind of gave you the timeline of where I was at in my life.
00:04:52
Speaker 1: Wow.
00:04:52
Speaker 4: Very immature, very disconnected on world and politics, and even when it happened at first, it was more like, wow.
00:05:00
Speaker 2: Okay. You know that?
00:05:01
Speaker 4: Cause I was, I was just immature. Didn't really know, but I remember dad, I'll never forget this. I was at the, I was living in Jacksonville, but I was at home for some reason and going through a transition of getting a job in Birmingham and of course, waiting for the wedding, but I'll never forget dad coming upstairs and knocking on the door and said, Hey, you need to get up. There's, there's something really bad going on. And I thought, what's he talking about? He's like, just, and I said to him, I said, what are you talking about? I didn't know if he was talking about our family or whatever. And he said, just turn the TV on. And he went back downstairs and I turned the TV on and that's when it unfolded for me. And wow, I'll never, you know, there's the markers we talk about. I'll never forget that. So dad and I sat there and watched it for hours and hours and trying to figure out what's going on, just like you guys. And I told Speedy and Greg in the kickoff hour, not being here, not even really knowing you guys at that time. Um, and I, and I don't want to take anything away from this day, but the way y'all handled that was beautifully the way you, and we'll play it next and the editing, but the way y'all handled that day as we go back and listen to it, man, you guys did a good job. I mean, you really did.
00:06:12
Speaker 1: We didn't have any idea what was going on.
00:06:13
Speaker 4: No, you didn't. And that, that's what, that's what makes it. I think it was, it was a real raw emotion that you were getting from you guys, excuse me. And, um, You know, it changed my mindset on a lot of the things that I took for granted. My dad being a fireman, for one.
00:06:28
Speaker 2: Right, there you go.
00:06:30
Speaker 1: Yeah, well, I can't tell you the number of people that told me they found out about it because they were going through their normal routine of listening to this show, and it unfolded here. Adler, how did you find out? Gosh, 18 years ago, you were 22? No, I was a sophomore.
00:06:44
Speaker 2: Oh, that's right. Oh, that's right. You're 33 now, aren't you?
00:06:48
Speaker 8: I was a sophomore in high school, and a lot of– The classrooms put on the TV after the first plane hit just because, you know, like we said, nobody knew what was going on. And I was not in one of the classrooms where a live TV was on in which, you know, students were watching and the second plane hit the towers. So a lot of my peers, a lot of my friends, that was their experience. That was not my experience for that one, which I think was helpful, you know. That was tough for a lot of my friends just to kind of like all together witness that horrific thing in a big moment like that.
00:07:22
Speaker 2: And that's like you guys said, that's when this.
00:07:24
Speaker 1: That's when you knew something was really going on wrong.
00:07:26
Speaker 4: Flip got switched.
00:07:27
Speaker 8: So this was the first time in my life I went home and just watched the news, you know, by myself.
00:07:33
Speaker 2: At that point.
00:07:34
Speaker 8: So that was kind of a weird moment of kind of growing up a little bit, just being like, wow, so I really care about what's going on in the world right now because it really impacts.
00:07:41
Speaker 1: Yeah, because you're a sophomore in high school. You were talking about Hems. You're a young guy in your early 20s. And your mindset then, I remember it vividly. I didn't have any idea what was going on in the world, nor did I really care at those two ages. But as far as outside of my, you know, the little world you lived in, So I guess for a lot of you guys that were young, this was a kind of a grow up moment.
00:08:02
Speaker 2: It was.
00:08:03
Speaker 6: Yeah.
00:08:03
Speaker 8: Aaron, my wife, is a teacher and she teaches ninth grade now, 11th grade. But it was a interesting moment for her to have a brand new class of freshmen come in and none of them were alive when 9-11 happened.
00:08:16
Speaker 2: Right.
00:08:16
Speaker 8: And she's like, like, just like Speedy was saying, it's like this might as well be Pearl Harbor to them.
00:08:21
Speaker 2: Like that's it's just a. Something that happened in the past.
00:08:24
Speaker 3: You have a generation that had that. You had a generation that had the Kennedy assassination and then the attack.
00:08:31
Speaker 2: On Pearl Harbor.
00:08:31
Speaker 5: Those were kind of those moments you always remember.
00:08:34
Speaker 1: I remember us making that connection pretty quick that this will be the things you just mentioned, Bubba. This will be ours. We will look back to 18 years ago. On this show live, this will be edited. Speedy put it together, did a great job with it. And also Adler has put together some visuals for the YouTube and the tubers for you guys to watch. So we now look back to 18 years ago today when America was attacked.
00:09:13
Speaker 2: What once seemed unthinkable has happened. The World Trade Center is on fire. To grasp the enormity of it is almost too much for the heart to bear.
00:09:21
Speaker 5: Really on fire. September 11th, 2001.
00:09:24
Speaker 1: It is a date that will be etched in history, engraved in stone, and in our memories.
00:09:30
Speaker 2: The day of the attack on America.
00:09:35
Speaker 5: I am so high, I can hear heaven.
00:09:41
Speaker 2: Oh, my God.
00:09:42
Speaker 5: Another plane. Oh, my God.
00:09:43
Speaker 2: Another plane.
00:09:44
Speaker 5: Oh, my God. We are under attack.
00:09:48
Speaker 2: Are we under attack?
00:09:51
Speaker 5: Yes.
00:09:55
Speaker 2: Another plane just hit it. Oh, my God.
00:10:01
Speaker 4: This looks like it is some sort of a concerted.
00:10:08
Speaker 3: Effort to attack the World Trade Center that is underway.
00:10:12
Speaker 2: Watch as we all fly away.
00:10:19
Speaker 3: We knew it was coming.
00:10:22
Speaker 5: Here they.
00:10:24
Speaker 8: Are.
00:10:25
Speaker 5: Oh, my God. Did y'all see that? That was like a 737 looking plane, wasn't it? It hit the other one.
00:10:35
Speaker 2: It hit the other trade center.
00:10:40
Speaker 5: Look, here it is in slow motion.
00:10:43
Speaker 2: Oh, this is terrifying.
00:10:45
Speaker 8: Oh, man.
00:10:48
Speaker 4: We're under a terrorist attack towards the military.
00:10:52
Speaker 2: Terrorists took over planes and forced them.
00:10:57
Speaker 5: To crash in.
00:10:58
Speaker 1: Something bizarre was going.
00:11:00
Speaker 2: On in New York.
00:11:12
Speaker 5: Yeah, we had lunch in the top of that building.
00:11:14
Speaker 2: You believe that?
00:11:15
Speaker 1: Yeah, I believe it.
00:11:16
Speaker 5: The plane was possibly hijacked and flown right in.
00:11:19
Speaker 1: Other countries live with this kind of stuff, you know, on a weekly basis. We're not used to this kind of stuff happening right here on the soil of some kind of bizarre attack.
00:11:35
Speaker 3: Both World Trade Center towers have had kamikaze pollen attacks this morning.
00:11:40
Speaker 1: 18 minutes between the two planes.
00:11:44
Speaker 5: The plane has now slammed into the Pentagon.
00:11:48
Speaker 2: Look at that.
00:11:49
Speaker 5: Y'all, the building has just fallen on New York City.
00:11:54
Speaker 3: The whole building just collapsed.
00:11:57
Speaker 5: Look at that.
00:12:00
Speaker 3: The Pentagon is on fire. Well, I tell you what, we need to be hitting our knees.
00:12:17
Speaker 2: God is in charge, and he is the one and only living God. It is time to hit a knee.
00:12:21
Speaker 5: This is the air I breathe.
00:12:25
Speaker 2: And it was time to pray for his intervention and pray for his mercy.
00:12:29
Speaker 5: This is the air I breathe.
00:12:31
Speaker 1: And for his protection of this country and the people in it. Of course, things happen that we wonder what they're about.
00:12:48
Speaker 3: It looks like it is snowing in New York City right now on the ground. It is white dust everywhere. It's just a spray of bodies falling everywhere.
00:13:06
Speaker 2: People are weeping coming out of there.
00:13:12
Speaker 6: Spoken.
00:13:18
Speaker 2: Say a prayer as Rick and Bubba.
00:13:25
Speaker 8: Army.
00:13:25
Speaker 5: That's the second.
00:13:26
Speaker 2: Tower, y'all.
00:13:29
Speaker 5: Is that the second tower?
00:13:30
Speaker 2: Yeah, that's the second one. Now both towers have crowned.
00:13:41
Speaker 5: My God. There are no World Trade Towers in New York.
00:13:48
Speaker 3: Plane crash 80 miles southeast of Pittsburgh. You think the pilot said, no, I'm not going any further?
00:14:02
Speaker 5: This is it?
00:14:02
Speaker 2: Could be a hero who said no.
00:14:16
Speaker 1: I hope everybody at churches all across this listening audience, I know that people of faith are joining hands right now because you believe that we are a nation that was blessed greatly by God, and we need to pray for his intervention here.
00:14:31
Speaker 3: We are now learning that the FAA is shutting down all takeoffs anywhere in the country. We're reliving December 7, 1941. This is a major attack against the United States of America by multiple forces. operatives attacking multiple targets, all in a synchronized and very organized way.
00:14:56
Speaker 5: And I... I'm desperate for you.
00:15:01
Speaker 1: If you are in the military, did you ever think, if you're these pilots, that where you would be circling over the rubble would be New York City?
00:15:07
Speaker 8: And I.
00:15:14
Speaker 2: I'm lost without you. It's amazing to see America come as a united one.
00:15:21
Speaker 5: I'm lost without you.
00:15:24
Speaker 2: Does that make you sick to see that shot right there? And that's America. Does that upset you? It really does. I'm lost without you.
00:15:32
Speaker 5: What is standing is under a cloud of debris. Boy, it's disturbing. I'm lost without you, Father.
00:15:43
Speaker 1: There are people out there that feel like we are evil. And that we are their Satan. And that's the way they look at this country, and they look at every one of us as being disposable.
00:16:02
Speaker 2: I would never, ever say that we shouldn't pray in a situation like this. Oh, I know.
00:16:06
Speaker 5: I breathe.
00:16:17
Speaker 1: If the people who are responsible for this, whoever they may be, if they had nuclear capabilities.
00:16:23
Speaker 2: They would have used them today.
00:16:24
Speaker 5: They would have used them.
00:16:25
Speaker 2: On September the 11th today against America. May God bless the victims, their families, and America. Thank you very much.
Speaker 1: Hey, it's Speedy, and this is Rick and Bubba's Greatest Hits, flashing back through 31 years of radio gold every Saturday morning, wherever you get your podcasts.
