WEBVTT
00:00.000 -->
00:04.009Welcome to the Revolution of Purpose Podcast. I'm your host, John Streit,
00:04.041 -->
00:07.938and each week we bring you conversations with thought leaders, entrepreneurs,
00:08.035 -->
00:11.868and individuals who have aligned their life with purpose and
00:11.900 -->
00:15.412created extraordinary results. So I'm going to live through it and accept it
00:15.912 -->
00:18.844radically with grace and hope and love. I mean,
00:19.342 -->
00:21.571I would be proud to be in this council. It was an honor. I had
00:21.603 -->
00:25.067so much fun. Tune in every Monday for the Revolution of Purpose solo
00:25.567 -->
00:28.868show and every Thursday for Revolution of Purpose Conversations.
00:29.767 -->
00:33.526What is that thing that you're going to do when you feel ready?
00:34.458 -->
00:37.575Seriously, what is the thing that you know you want to do,
00:38.217 -->
00:40.643but you keep telling yourself, I'm just not ready yet?
00:41.431 -->
00:45.254Maybe you're waiting to start the business or to have the conversation,
00:46.009 -->
00:49.110to make the move, to apply for the opportunity,
00:49.608 -->
00:53.480to end something that you know has run its course, or to
00:53.980 -->
00:58.075start something that you've been dreaming about for years. Put yourself
00:58.123 -->
01:01.770out there. Whatever it is, you've convinced yourself
01:02.140 -->
01:05.498that at some point in the future, you're going to wake up and finally
01:05.851 -->
01:09.917feel ready. My friends, what if that day never comes?
01:10.752 -->
01:14.174Because here's something I've discovered. You don't always feel ready
01:14.207 -->
01:17.549before you make the decision. Sometimes you have
01:17.581 -->
01:21.662to make the decision, and then the decision creates
01:22.162 -->
01:25.367the person. Who becomes ready. Welcome back to the
01:25.867 -->
01:29.808Revolution of Purpose podcast. On this solo show, I want to ask
01:30.161 -->
01:33.543you about something very specific. Why do you
01:34.043 -->
01:37.632stop doing the things you feel like you should do because you just feel like
01:38.193 -->
01:41.463you're not ready? So there is this myth of readiness.
01:41.624 -->
01:44.846I think we have this idea that before we make the
01:45.346 -->
01:48.918big move in our lives, we're supposed to have this overwhelming sense of certainty
01:49.415 -->
01:52.445that somehow everything is going to line up.
01:52.944 -->
01:56.423The fear is going to disappear. The questions are going to go away.
01:56.874 -->
02:00.900And we're going to wake up one morning and think, today is the
02:01.400 -->
02:04.877day I have arrived. I am ready. But think
02:05.377 -->
02:08.049about some of the biggest decisions that you've ever made.
02:09.542 -->
02:12.494Did you always feel ready? Were you really,
02:12.753 -->
02:16.286truly ready? Or did you make the decision and then
02:16.383 -->
02:19.769you figured out how to become the person capable of living that?
02:20.213 -->
02:24.514Because I think that's how transformation actually happens. We don't become
02:25.014 -->
02:28.410courageous and then go do courageous things. We do courageous
02:28.538 -->
02:32.619things, and through doing those things, we become courageous.
02:33.197 -->
02:36.587We don't become confident and then step out into the opportunity.
02:36.973 -->
02:40.507No, we step out into the opportunity, and by taking that step,
02:40.909 -->
02:43.945the confidence develops because we discover,
02:44.202 -->
02:47.544wow, we can really handle this. We don't
02:47.560 -->
02:51.255always become ready and then move. Sometimes movement
02:51.497 -->
02:55.227is the very thing that makes us ready. So what
02:55.308 -->
02:59.231are you really waiting for? I want you to think
02:59.731 -->
03:03.489about something right now. What are you waiting to feel ready
03:03.522 -->
03:06.871for? And then ask yourself another question. What does ready
03:07.129 -->
03:10.929actually mean to you? Does it mean that you're no longer
03:11.429 -->
03:15.048afraid? Does it mean that you no longer have to know exactly
03:15.081 -->
03:19.531how everything is going to work out? Maybe it means everyone around
03:20.031 -->
03:24.267you doesn't have to approve. Does it mean that there's no possibility
03:24.767 -->
03:28.073of failure and then you know you're ready? Because if that's what you're waiting for,
03:28.282 -->
03:32.103you're going to be waiting forever. There are things
03:32.135 -->
03:35.796in my own life that I've stepped into without knowing exactly
03:35.892 -->
03:39.200how they were going to turn out. And looking back,
03:39.345 -->
03:41.898I can see something now that I could not see then.
03:42.876 -->
03:46.240I wasn't supposed to have everything I needed before I started.
03:47.074 -->
03:50.534Some of what I needed could only be developed through that
03:50.566 -->
03:53.834journey. The confidence, the wisdom,
03:54.828 -->
03:58.288the very relationships that brought it about, the resilience,
03:58.433 -->
04:02.566the experience, even the clarity. Those things weren't waiting for
04:03.066 -->
04:06.507me at the starting line. They were waiting for me along the
04:07.007 -->
04:11.009road. And sometimes we don't even fully discover
04:11.073 -->
04:13.974who we are until we start moving.
04:14.616 -->
04:18.047Let's take Oprah for an example.
04:18.865 -->
04:22.056You know, today we know Oprah as one of the most successful and
04:22.556 -->
04:26.402influential media personalities in the entire world. But early in her
04:26.902 -->
04:30.155television career, Oprah was not yet, well, Oprah,
04:30.315 -->
04:33.490not the Oprah that we know today. She was working in
04:33.682 -->
04:36.665a small television studio in Baltimore,
04:37.226 -->
04:39.985and she was struggling in that traditional anchor role.
04:40.337 -->
04:43.529Eventually, she was removed from that evening
04:43.962 -->
04:47.927broadcast. Now imagine experiencing that moment
04:47.976 -->
04:51.588without knowing the rest of the story, because we have the benefit
04:52.088 -->
04:55.987of looking backwards. We know what Oprah became, but she didn't have
04:56.487 -->
05:00.082that perspective while she was living it. Think about how easy it
05:00.582 -->
05:04.529would have been to interpret that as experience leading to
05:04.577 -->
05:08.254the evidence that I'm not good enough. You know, what if she's like, this is
05:08.366 -->
05:11.770telling me right here, I'm not cut out for television. What if
05:11.802 -->
05:15.559this experience is telling me I was wrong about myself all along?
05:16.633 -->
05:20.208But something interesting happened instead. Oprah eventually
05:20.240 -->
05:23.831moved into daytime television, and that's
05:24.331 -->
05:28.063where the very qualities that didn't necessarily fit the traditional evening
05:28.175 -->
05:31.461news anchor role became some of her greatest
05:31.961 -->
05:34.475strengths. Her ability to connect, her empathy,
05:35.292 -->
05:39.172her curiosity, her willingness to be authentic
05:39.380 -->
05:42.779and emotional and vulnerable and present with
05:42.907 -->
05:46.674other human beings. And ultimately, that's what helped her discover
05:47.011 -->
05:50.524the kind of television she was uniquely equipped to create.
05:51.182 -->
05:55.034Here's why I think that matters. Sometimes you don't discover
05:55.534 -->
05:58.404who you are by sitting somewhere trying to figure out who you are.
05:59.206 -->
06:02.303Sometimes you discover yourself by moving,
06:03.057 -->
06:07.101by trying something, by learning, by adjusting, by getting
06:07.149 -->
06:10.600rejected, by getting redirected. You discover
06:11.100 -->
06:14.419something about yourself that you could not have discovered from the sidelines.
06:15.574 -->
06:19.570And here's the mistake that we make. We interpret something that
06:19.731 -->
06:23.518it is evidence that we can't do something. It's evidence that we're
06:24.018 -->
06:27.257not ready. But sometimes it is not evidence that
06:27.757 -->
06:31.333we're not ready. It's just information. It's showing us something.
06:31.863 -->
06:35.634When you get that rejection, ask yourself, what is this
06:36.134 -->
06:39.325showing me? Maybe this isn't the right room for me.
06:40.128 -->
06:43.947Maybe this isn't the right method for me. Maybe this isn't the right expression of
06:43.979 -->
06:47.426my gift. But that does not necessarily mean that the gift
06:47.926 -->
06:51.961is not there. That's why you've got to be willing to move,
06:52.698 -->
06:56.095because clarity often comes through that movement. You take
06:56.595 -->
07:00.118a step and you learn something. You take another step and you
07:00.618 -->
07:04.364learn something else. And eventually you look around and you realize this
07:04.396 -->
07:07.745journey wasn't just taking me somewhere. This journey was
07:07.858 -->
07:12.394revealing me to myself. Identity comes
07:12.651 -->
07:15.954before the evidence. And this
07:16.454 -->
07:19.883is where identity enters this conversation. You know, we talk so much about
07:20.383 -->
07:24.582identity on this podcast. If you've listened, you've heard me say your identity
07:24.694 -->
07:28.591creates your destiny. And most people want evidence before they're willing
07:28.623 -->
07:32.504to change how they see themselves. And they'll say, when the business
07:32.552 -->
07:36.096succeeds, then I'll be the entrepreneur. I'll believe in
07:36.144 -->
07:39.549myself. Or when people start listening to me, then I'll
07:40.049 -->
07:44.042believe that I have something worth saying. Or when I get the opportunity, I will
07:44.075 -->
07:47.484believe I'm qualified. When I accomplish that
07:47.613 -->
07:50.517goal, I'll finally believe I'm capable.
07:51.469 -->
07:54.841But transformation works in the opposite direction.
07:55.745 -->
07:59.722You have to begin becoming the person before
08:00.222 -->
08:03.731the evidence completely supports it. And that's why one of the foundational ideas
08:03.828 -->
08:06.076I teach is be it and you will see it. If you've heard me for
08:06.576 -->
08:10.179a while, you've heard me say, I'm not a fan of fake it till
08:10.212 -->
08:13.456you make it. I don't believe in that because I believe everything
08:13.520 -->
08:17.568we do is an authentic expression of ourselves, and it is so
08:17.713 -->
08:20.974sacred and so honest. There's nothing fake about it.
08:21.648 -->
08:24.764So instead, I say, be it and you will see it.
08:25.568 -->
08:29.551You begin showing up as the person that you're becoming. You begin
08:29.583 -->
08:33.085making decisions as that person. You begin speaking
08:33.422 -->
08:36.619as that person, and you begin establishing the standards.
08:37.196 -->
08:41.301Of that person. You start walking through doors as
08:41.801 -->
08:45.230a whole different person. The identity of this person who
08:45.730 -->
08:49.158can accomplish your goals, and eventually your external
08:49.658 -->
08:53.118reality begins catching up with the internal
08:53.166 -->
08:57.063transformation that you've done. And here's something I really
08:57.095 -->
09:00.542want you to hear is that the old version of you may never
09:01.042 -->
09:04.759feel ready for the life that the new version of you is capable of creating.
09:05.737 -->
09:09.439Think about that. You're asking your current identity for
09:09.939 -->
09:13.126permission to step into something that requires a new identity.
09:14.007 -->
09:17.421Of course it feels uncomfortable. My friends, of course there is
09:17.517 -->
09:20.787uncertainty. Of course, part of you says,
09:21.220 -->
09:24.345what do you think you're doing? Who do you think you are?
09:25.307 -->
09:28.801But maybe the better question is, who do you think you're becoming?
09:29.298 -->
09:33.369Please pardon me while I interrupt your podcast episode with a quick message.
09:34.299 -->
09:37.250If you're enjoying today's episode, can I ask you one small favor?
09:37.955 -->

10:33.106 -->
10:36.616thing. If you've ever found yourself asking questions like,
10:37.322 -->
10:40.192why am I here? Am I living my purpose?
10:40.449 -->
10:44.314How do I get unstuck in life? How do I take my
10:44.475 -->
10:48.147life to the next level? Then I would love to invite you to
10:48.647 -->
10:51.371schedule a free clarity call with me.

10:59.133 -->
11:02.606a real one-on-one coaching conversation with

11:06.359 -->
11:10.122want to go, and what may be standing in your way. My goal
11:10.780 -->
11:14.122is simply to help you gain greater clarity, direction,
11:14.572 -->

11:18.430 -->

11:22.053 -->
11:24.971about the Revolution of Purpose coaching programs that I offer,
11:25.295 -->
11:28.489please visit johnstreet.org Or reach out to
11:28.989 -->
11:32.888me on any of the social media platforms I mentioned. And now let's
11:32.905 -->
11:36.919get you back to today's episode, because perhaps the
11:37.419 -->
11:40.997person that you've been ready and has been waking up every
11:41.029 -->
11:44.449morning and getting in your head about how you can't do something
11:45.268 -->
11:48.704isn't quite ready yet. And that's okay. You're just not trying
11:48.736 -->
11:52.237to stay that same person. You're trying to take a step into becoming.
11:53.248 -->
11:56.648Someone different, into becoming the person that's living your goals.
11:57.642 -->
12:01.043There are moments when life invites us into something before we feel
12:01.091 -->
12:04.795completely equipped for it, and the invitation itself
12:04.860 -->
12:08.613becomes part of your transformation. There's another reason
12:09.113 -->
12:13.119some people don't feel ready, and this one can be incredibly powerful
12:13.619 -->
12:16.968because sometimes we've convinced ourselves that we're too late.
12:17.610 -->
12:20.802Sometimes we've told ourselves we don't feel ready because
12:20.818 -->
12:24.010we've missed it. We missed the boat. We've waited too long.
12:24.223 -->
12:27.931We've gotten too old. Maybe you're listening to this
12:28.431 -->
12:31.611and you're 40 years old. Maybe you're 50. Maybe you're 60.
12:32.047 -->
12:35.566Maybe you're 70. Maybe you're looking around at people who
12:35.598 -->
12:39.300started earlier and then they're doing something similar
12:39.800 -->
12:42.630to what you're doing and you're like, I should have done this years ago.
12:43.260 -->
12:47.057I've missed my opportunity. How many of you get on social media
12:47.557 -->
12:51.513right now and find every 25-year-old saying they're a multimillionaire in their Lamborghini
12:52.013 -->
12:55.748and living in their homes in Dubai and the Swiss Alps and you're like,
12:56.309 -->
12:59.789how did I miss it? It's too late for me to reinvent myself.
13:00.334 -->
13:03.845This dude with a washboard stomach and all these abs
13:03.861 -->
13:07.548is telling me that he's so rich with AI and all I know how
13:08.048 -->
13:10.691to do with AI is ask ChatGPT what I should have for dinner.
13:11.380 -->
13:14.940I just want you to know, if you feel like that's you and you feel
13:15.440 -->
13:19.092like you have missed your boat, you have not. Think about Vera
13:19.592 -->
13:23.100Wang for a moment. You know, Vera Wang is synonymous with bridal
13:23.116 -->
13:26.710fashion, But her dresses are absolutely astounding.
13:26.774 -->
13:30.770They're gorgeous. But she didn't spend her 20s building
13:30.882 -->
13:34.958the Vera Wang bridal empire. You know, she was a competitive figure
13:35.458 -->
13:39.259skater when she was younger, and then she built a successful career in fashion,
13:39.708 -->
13:43.254including years working at Vogue and then later Ralph Lauren. And it
13:43.383 -->
13:46.608wasn't until the age of 40 years old that
13:47.108 -->
13:50.587she entered the bridal design and opened her own bridal
13:50.603 -->
13:54.245boutique. She was 40. Now think
13:54.745 -->
13:58.481about that through the lens of identity. At 39 years old, the identity the
13:58.545 -->
14:02.155world would eventually associate with the name Vera Wang had not
14:02.655 -->
14:06.695even emerged yet. That chapter was still ahead of her.
14:07.706 -->
14:11.764And I want somebody listening to hear me today when I say this: you
14:11.861 -->
14:15.133have no idea what chapter of your story you
14:15.166 -->
14:19.074may still be standing in front of. We have created these
14:19.171 -->
14:22.883imaginary timelines for ourselves. I should have figured
14:23.383 -->
14:26.417this out by 25. I should have known this by 35.
14:26.514 -->
14:30.060I should have accomplished this by 40. I should be financially at
14:30.077 -->
14:33.704this point by 50. I should have found my purpose
14:34.204 -->
14:37.895by now. According to whom? You know,
14:37.911 -->
14:40.944who established this deadline for you becoming
14:41.621 -->
14:44.315your goal-achieved life? Maybe you aren't behind at all.
14:44.444 -->
14:48.133Maybe you're just still becoming. Because everything you've
14:48.149 -->
14:51.740lived through up to this point, the successes,
14:51.852 -->
14:55.651the disappointments, the careers, the jobs, the relationships,
14:56.004 -->
15:00.236the things that worked out and the things that failed spectacularly,
15:01.374 -->
15:05.478those things have developed something in you that the next chapter
15:05.978 -->
15:09.533requires. Vera Wang did not arrive at 40
15:09.870 -->
15:13.140empty-handed. She brought decades of experience
15:13.252 -->
15:17.100with her. Her previous chapters weren't wasted simply because they
15:17.180 -->
15:20.196weren't the final chapter. And neither are yours.
15:21.191 -->
15:24.979That's why I don't want you to sit here thinking, I should have started 10
15:25.028 -->
15:28.719years ago. Maybe, maybe you should have, but you didn't.
15:29.361 -->
15:32.941And unless somebody listening to this podcast has figured out time travel,
15:33.294 -->
15:36.440you can't, you can't go back and do anything about that.
15:36.986 -->
15:40.132All we have right now is today. So what
15:40.632 -->
15:43.727can you do? Start today. There's that
15:44.227 -->
15:47.197old adage, when is the best time to plant a tree? 10 years ago.
15:47.439 -->
15:50.337When is the second best time to plant a tree? Today.
15:52.350 -->
15:55.13610 years from now, you don't want to be sitting there and saying, I wish
15:55.184 -->
15:58.724I had planted that tree. You don't want to be saying, I wish I
15:59.224 -->
16:02.800had started 10 years ago. All we have is today. So today
16:02.945 -->
16:06.934is the day to make the decision. Today is the moment to decide
16:06.950 -->
16:10.884who you are, to allow the shift in your identity, to decide that
16:11.303 -->
16:14.958you don't have to be fully ready. To walk into this new
16:15.250 -->
16:18.632chapter of your life? The question's not,
16:18.664 -->
16:21.870why didn't I do this sooner? The question is,
16:22.051 -->
16:25.792who am I willing to become today? And that
16:25.824 -->
16:28.865brings me to something else that we've got to understand.
16:29.948 -->
16:33.441We have to stop interpreting fear as a stop
16:33.941 -->
16:37.463sign, because sometimes fear means this matters
16:37.576 -->
16:40.418to me. But I haven't done this before.
16:40.771 -->
16:44.525Sometimes fear means I'm stepping beyond the boundaries of the identity
16:44.557 -->
16:47.862that I've known. But it doesn't mean you can't create
16:47.910 -->
16:51.102that new identity. It doesn't mean you can't be it and see it.
16:51.680 -->
16:55.514Fear does not automatically mean that you're going in the wrong direction.
16:56.284 -->
16:59.878Sometimes fear shows up precisely because you're finally
16:59.942 -->
17:03.375moving. And courage is not the absence of that feeling.
17:03.551 -->
17:06.954Courage is the deciding. This feeling doesn't get to
17:07.454 -->
17:11.322make the decision for me. And my friends, that is powerful
17:11.675 -->
17:15.095because now you don't have to eliminate fear before you move.
17:15.833 -->
17:19.543You don't have to manufacture some magical feeling of readiness.
17:20.008 -->
17:23.364You simply have to decide who gets to make the decision,
17:24.183 -->
17:27.780the person that you've been or the person that you're becoming.
17:29.177 -->
17:32.911So let's make this practical. I want you to identify one
17:33.168 -->
17:37.013thing that you've been waiting to feel ready for. Not 10 things, but one thing.
17:38.074 -->
17:41.608What is one decision that you've been postponing because you don't feel ready?
17:42.517 -->
17:46.102And then instead ask yourself, what would the person
17:46.602 -->
17:49.930that I'm becoming do next? I didn't
17:50.430 -->
17:52.922say what would they accomplish? I said, what would they do next?
17:53.649 -->
17:57.126Maybe it's sending that email or making the phone call or signing up for
17:57.626 -->
18:00.485that class or starting the first page or posting the video or having the conversation.
18:02.922 -->
18:05.615Walking into the room, asking for the opportunity,
18:06.031 -->
18:09.285saying yes. Maybe it's saying no. Maybe it's finally
18:09.413 -->
18:13.500saying, I'm making myself a priority. You don't
18:14.000 -->
18:17.571have to know the next 100 steps. You need enough courage
18:17.587 -->
18:21.032for one, because one decision creates
18:21.532 -->
18:25.167movement, and that movement creates evidence, which creates confidence,
18:25.280 -->
18:28.918and confidence begins changing the way you see yourself.
18:29.446 -->
18:32.395That's how the new identity becomes real.
18:33.536 -->
18:37.375It's like with Oprah. She couldn't have known where all of those steps were
18:37.875 -->
18:41.053eventually going to lead. Vera Wang, at 39,
18:41.085 -->
18:45.229one of the chapters that she would become most famous for had not even begun.
18:45.823 -->
18:50.240Different stories, but the same principle. Stop waiting to
18:50.740 -->
18:54.497feel ready. So here's what I want you to remember today. You may have
18:54.997 -->
18:58.561received the feeling that you're waiting for. You may have said,
18:58.834 -->
19:02.605I think I have hope to do this. Or you may have heard
19:03.105 -->
19:06.212this and said, once again, I just don't think I'm ready, John. You don't
19:06.712 -->
19:10.379know me or my situation. Readiness is not always about something
19:10.444 -->
19:14.034you feel. Sometimes readiness is something that you
19:14.050 -->
19:17.769have to create within yourself, and you create it by moving.
19:17.834 -->
19:21.440You create it by deciding. You create it by taking a step
19:21.940 -->
19:25.576forward while your voice still shakes a little, by saying yes before
19:25.672 -->
19:29.295you know exactly how it's going to happen, by trusting that the
19:29.795 -->
19:33.351person you need to become will emerge through the process. Of becoming?
19:34.008 -->
19:37.550Your future is not asking you to have everything figured out
19:38.050 -->
19:41.702today. It's simply saying, will you take the next best step?
19:42.599 -->
19:45.885Because the life you desire is created by the person you become.
19:46.590 -->
19:50.021And sometimes you become that person by stepping forward
19:50.053 -->
19:53.739before you feel ready. And if you're listening to this today and you're
19:54.239 -->
19:57.875thinking, John, I know there's something I need to do, and I know there's something
19:57.987 -->
20:01.321more for me. I just don't know what my next decision is,
20:02.059 -->
20:05.891that is why I have created the Shift Call Experience.
20:06.083 -->
20:09.803Shift is a private mindset coaching experience with me
20:09.851 -->
20:13.298built around one simple idea. One new decision can
20:13.798 -->
20:17.178change the trajectory of your life. We will look at where you
20:17.210 -->
20:20.849are. We will see where you want to go. We will see who you
20:21.138 -->
20:24.649are and who you're becoming and what may be standing between those
20:24.761 -->
20:28.738two realities. And then together, we'll identify one decision that
20:28.754 -->
20:32.537you can begin to put action into your
20:33.037 -->
20:36.913life immediately. Because sometimes you don't need another 6 months of thinking.
20:37.090 -->
20:40.841You just need a shift in your perspective, a new decision,
20:41.578 -->
20:45.201a new way of seeing yourself. And that decision might just be
20:45.701 -->
20:48.824the beginning of everything that comes next. So if you'd
20:48.872 -->
20:52.478like to experience a Shift Call with me, reach out and
20:52.978 -->
20:57.688let's make this happen. You can always go to johnstreet.org

21:12.400then you can always send me a message at john@johnstreet.org.
21:13.588 -->
21:16.204Just know that you don't have to feel ready to begin.
21:17.135 -->
21:20.633Sometimes beginning is how you become ready. I hope
