00:00:00.880 --> 00:00:01.600
Hello again.
00:00:02.000 --> 00:00:04.480
Welcome to Behind the Badge, a chaplain's call.
00:00:05.120 --> 00:00:08.800
We're going to talk about faith and the law enforcement profession today.
00:00:09.519 --> 00:00:13.439
And specifically, how can faith improve your law enforcement career?
00:00:14.160 --> 00:00:28.879
Now we see so many ugly, kata, tragic, and senseless situations and the aftermath of those situations that at some point in time most of us ask ourselves why does blank insert a name allow this to happen?
00:00:29.199 --> 00:00:31.600
So today we're going to talk about that faith.
00:00:32.240 --> 00:00:38.399
Faith is basically a core block of beliefs that guide your moral compass behavior and actions.
00:00:38.719 --> 00:00:43.520
To simplify, faith would be trust in a person, a thing, or a concept.
00:00:43.840 --> 00:00:46.079
And then we get to religious faith.
00:00:46.799 --> 00:00:49.280
Religious faith comes in many forms.
00:00:49.439 --> 00:01:04.959
There are twelve classical religions Baha'i, Buddhism, Christianity, Confucianism, Hinduism, Islam, Jainism, Judaism, Shinto, Sikhism, Taoism, and Zoroastrianism.
00:01:05.200 --> 00:01:11.760
And within those twelve classical religions, there are approximately four thousand different faiths.
00:01:12.079 --> 00:01:23.040
In the context of religion, one can define faith as the belief in and worship of a superhuman power or powers, especially a god or gods.
00:01:23.439 --> 00:01:38.640
Religious people often think of faith as confidence based on a perceived degree of warrant, while others who are more skeptical of organized religions, tend to think of faith simply as belief without evidence.
00:01:38.959 --> 00:01:51.200
In whatever way you wish to define or accept the concept of faith in a religious context, it is safe to say that most of us have at one time or do presently, have some level of faith.
00:01:51.519 --> 00:02:00.319
The million dollar question is how strong is your faith and do you truly realize how a strong faith can improve your law enforcement career?
00:02:00.560 --> 00:02:04.560
And that would include your law enforcement personal life.
00:02:04.799 --> 00:02:08.080
One thing that strong faith requires is discipline.
00:02:08.319 --> 00:02:11.919
Another would be humility, another would be positivity.
00:02:12.159 --> 00:02:18.800
Now if you take just those three elements, have you not described three needed traits in our career?
00:02:19.120 --> 00:02:21.199
We wouldn't survive without them.
00:02:21.520 --> 00:02:25.759
Our profession dictates that we deal with stress on a daily level.
00:02:26.000 --> 00:02:37.439
Stress from responding to calls, stress from leadership within the agency, with what the community expects of us, stress from spouses, significant others, family members, finances, etc.
00:02:37.680 --> 00:02:38.240
etc.
00:02:38.879 --> 00:02:46.879
Then that stress can be hugely amped up by a single dynamic event or a cumulative sum of the smaller events.
00:02:47.120 --> 00:03:03.199
So much of the time we end up taking that stress home with us, which can cause, yes, even more stress, which very often causes us to crash our personal lives because our professional lives have gotten way out of balance.
00:03:03.759 --> 00:03:08.400
To combat that, some head for the gym, which can relieve the stress.
00:03:08.560 --> 00:03:13.439
Yet while they're in the gym, others head for the bar or another relationship, an affair.
00:03:13.599 --> 00:03:15.439
Some shut down and become depressed.
00:03:15.599 --> 00:03:21.360
Some find buying an expensive toy, a truck or a boat, temporarily relieves that stress.
00:03:21.599 --> 00:03:28.159
Now while the gym is a positive example of fighting stress, the rest are obviously negative.
00:03:28.479 --> 00:03:36.240
The good news is that faith can help greatly to combat stress and the out of control balances in our lives.
00:03:36.639 --> 00:03:44.960
Law enforcement officers can lessen stress when they utilize a strong faith to get a crystal clear view of their purpose in life.
00:03:45.199 --> 00:03:55.360
Faith enhances your positivity, humility, and discipline, which in turn strengthens your personal and family relationships and your fiscal responsibilities.
00:03:55.599 --> 00:04:07.680
If you take an LEO with little or no spiritual foundation and they spend some time investigating faith, they will usually find much more balance in their daily professional and personal lives.
00:04:07.919 --> 00:04:09.759
Knowledge is king.
00:04:10.479 --> 00:04:23.120
Every working day we throw on our ballistic vest, duty belt, taser, ASP, our ASP, IFAC, extra mags for our pistol and patrol rifle, comms, etc.
00:04:23.519 --> 00:04:31.839
We carry all these weapons and tools on our person in order to be prepared to do our work and to survive our shift and go home.
00:04:32.160 --> 00:04:37.519
But do we also prioritize a place to keep our faith with us?
00:04:37.680 --> 00:04:39.279
Where do we carry that?
00:04:39.600 --> 00:04:43.839
We need to look at our faith as an indispensable survival tool.
00:04:44.160 --> 00:04:45.920
Having trouble getting started?
00:04:46.079 --> 00:04:47.920
Try these small steps at first.
00:04:48.160 --> 00:04:50.720
Each has served me well through the years.
00:04:50.959 --> 00:04:56.800
Find that spiritual motivator, a person, a picture, a scripture, a song, a memory.
00:04:57.120 --> 00:04:59.120
You need to know what inspires you.
00:04:59.360 --> 00:05:02.800
It will be unique to you and your individual makeup.
00:05:03.360 --> 00:05:15.199
While a faith or spiritual mentor can help you find those motivators, just be sure that the person you are using as a mentor motivator does not push or bully you to adopt their motivator.
00:05:15.360 --> 00:05:19.439
If they do, turn around, run away quickly.
00:05:20.160 --> 00:05:22.240
Create a transition ritual.
00:05:22.560 --> 00:05:25.439
This one is hugely assisted by a strong faith.
00:05:25.680 --> 00:05:29.680
My personal ritual during my years in law enforcement before the shift was this.
00:05:29.920 --> 00:05:32.399
As I was leaving, I would never say goodbye.
00:05:32.560 --> 00:05:36.160
It was and to this day is, I'll see you in a bit.
00:05:36.399 --> 00:05:44.319
I would then say to myself as I was getting in my car, no matter what comes at me today, I will be coming home after shift.
00:05:44.560 --> 00:05:52.560
It set me up to maintain enhanced awareness and set in my mind that nothing was going to prevent me from returning home.
00:05:52.800 --> 00:06:07.439
Unfortunately, what I did not do well was to transition out of that LEO role after work was done until I've realized, until I finally realized I also needed a transition to reset myself before I got home.
00:06:07.680 --> 00:06:11.519
I began stopping for a coffee, a soft drink, a taco, etc.
00:06:11.680 --> 00:06:13.279
after I was done with my shift.
00:06:13.519 --> 00:06:19.439
That gave me time to process, delete, or file away, and reset myself.
00:06:19.759 --> 00:06:25.519
Now I carried suspicion of people with me constantly, and to some degree I still do.
00:06:25.920 --> 00:06:30.160
I failed to realize that most people are good and decent.
00:06:30.639 --> 00:06:34.480
In our profession, that is probably the factor that affects us most.
00:06:34.800 --> 00:06:39.920
We have trouble thinking and letting go of thinking the worst of people.
00:06:40.639 --> 00:06:42.399
Some are evil, I know that.
00:06:42.560 --> 00:06:45.040
In this job, we've all dealt with those people.
00:06:45.199 --> 00:06:48.160
However, most people are respectable.
00:06:49.759 --> 00:07:02.399
Work on building, finding, or renewing a faith spiritual identity, and that doesn't mean you're going to start wearing flowers in your hair, change your camo to pink woodland, or start watching badminton matches all day.
00:07:02.560 --> 00:07:06.800
It simply means you're going to beef up a very important survival tool.
00:07:07.040 --> 00:07:16.639
It will help you see yourself not just as an LEO, but as a human, civilian who chooses to do right as a law enforcement professional.
00:07:17.600 --> 00:07:25.920
When we overemphasize the law enforcement dimension of ourselves and ignore all our other sides, we put ourselves at risk.
00:07:26.079 --> 00:07:31.040
We jeopardize our relationships, our health, our fiscal responsibilities.
00:07:31.279 --> 00:07:34.480
Things start going downhill in our personal lives.
00:07:34.879 --> 00:07:42.079
And because that crash causes more stress, we then endanger our ability to survive on the streets.
00:07:42.319 --> 00:07:52.160
Our reaction time can decrease, and even if that decreases only by 0.25 of a second, that is enough to put you behind the loop and trying to catch up.
00:07:52.319 --> 00:07:54.560
I've seen it, it happens.
00:07:55.199 --> 00:08:06.639
When you give up many of the dimensions in your personal private life and overemphasize the LEO dimension of your life, you become helpless to control either identity.
00:08:07.120 --> 00:08:14.800
I assure you that a strong faith and spiritual outlook can bring balance to all the dimensions of your life.
00:08:15.279 --> 00:08:20.720
You will notice I have not suggested what faith, deity, or spiritual slant you should believe in.
00:08:20.959 --> 00:08:23.360
That is strictly a personal choice.
00:08:23.680 --> 00:08:29.519
Be it God, Allah, Buddha, maybe the cowboys, Broncos, Raiders, maybe not.
00:08:29.920 --> 00:08:34.320
Look for and find or rejuvenate your faith now.
00:08:34.960 --> 00:08:37.440
Make it a priority in your life.
00:08:37.679 --> 00:08:40.960
At some point, someone usually brings up atheism.
00:08:41.519 --> 00:08:48.000
I have worked with those faith systems that were more esoteric, atheism, theism, Wicca, etc.
00:08:48.240 --> 00:08:53.519
When I was a LEO in Wesicho, there was an officer whose faith system was Santoria.
00:08:54.399 --> 00:09:07.679
I will state that I have personally witnessed the lack of strength that atheism, theism, Wicca, and other esoteric faith systems have given people when everything truly goes down into the toilet.
00:09:07.919 --> 00:09:19.919
You see, it is not within reason so much who or what your belief or deity is called, it's the fact that you have that strong faith and spiritual center in your life.
00:09:20.159 --> 00:09:25.200
The dividends it pays you, they're gonna be immeasurable.
00:09:25.840 --> 00:09:34.799
I pray that this might give you something to think about, perhaps cause you to reevaluate, or if you are not of faith, to search for a faith system.
00:09:35.039 --> 00:09:39.440
Maybe start exercising your faith in spirituality to a greater degree.
00:09:39.679 --> 00:09:40.399
Try it.
00:09:40.559 --> 00:09:44.000
Take it out for a walk, jog with it for a while.
00:09:44.320 --> 00:09:47.279
See for yourself if I am right or wrong.
00:09:47.919 --> 00:09:49.759
I love all my brothers and sisters.
00:09:50.159 --> 00:09:51.600
Stay safe, all of you.
00:09:51.840 --> 00:09:55.360
Stay strong mentally, physically, and spiritually.
00:09:56.240 --> 00:09:57.279
God's peace.
