WEBVTT
00:00:00.270 --> 00:00:02.549
Welcome to our podcast for this week.
00:00:02.910 --> 00:00:10.919
About a week ago, we celebrated Easter Sunday, which is a wonderful celebration of the resurrection of Jesus.
00:00:10.949 --> 00:00:16.260
So today we are gonna do a resurrection episode.
00:00:16.390 --> 00:00:18.579
This is one of our episodes that has been downloaded.
00:00:19.285 --> 00:00:22.225
More than almost any other episode.
00:00:22.285 --> 00:00:24.864
It's an amazing story of Jamie Lee.
00:00:24.925 --> 00:00:35.195
It was posted, uh, a few, several years ago, one of our very first episodes, and, resurrection is the spirit of what Safe House Ministries is all about as well.
00:00:35.615 --> 00:00:38.645
The resurrection of life back from.
00:00:39.049 --> 00:00:52.850
People's lives who are filled with death and addiction and destruction, the death of marriages, the death of relationships with children, the death of so many things, their friends through overdoses, so many things.
00:00:52.850 --> 00:00:54.109
Death is just all around.
00:00:54.109 --> 00:00:58.460
And what Safe House Ministries does is resurrect people's lives.
00:00:58.640 --> 00:01:00.020
So enjoy this episode.
00:01:00.395 --> 00:01:02.164
And let us know what you think.
00:01:02.164 --> 00:01:04.295

00:01:13.525 --> 00:01:14.394

00:01:26.454 --> 00:01:32.784
We are not on Hamilton Road anymore, but we are on Manor Road now, but you'll find all the correct information on our website.
00:01:32.784 --> 00:01:33.444
So God bless you.
00:01:33.444 --> 00:01:36.295
Enjoy this episode and have a wonderful week.
00:01:38.614 --> 00:01:48.424

00:02:21.784 --> 00:02:23.854
Case management for finding a permanent home.
00:02:24.215 --> 00:02:26.794
Over 300 hot meals every day.
00:02:27.125 --> 00:02:29.164
Free clothing and so much more.
00:02:29.525 --> 00:02:38.465
One of the most incredible services that safe house ministries provides is our free nine to 12 month intensive outpatient substance abuse program.
00:02:38.824 --> 00:02:47.254
Which is state licensed and has no waitlist setting it apart from nearly all other state licensed recovery programs, which are often very expensive.
00:02:47.555 --> 00:02:50.314
And nearly always have a wait list of two weeks or longer.
00:02:50.437 --> 00:02:52.147
Almost 100% of those.
00:02:52.268 --> 00:02:57.074
Individual staying in our shelters who follow our three phase program and up fully employed.
00:02:57.170 --> 00:03:03.805
And 68% of individuals who stay at least one night with us, end up finding work and moving into their own home.
00:03:04.074 --> 00:03:07.104
Thank you for being with us today and listening to our podcast.
00:03:07.344 --> 00:03:09.474
We hope you enjoy this week's episode.
00:03:09.965 --> 00:03:12.216
So Jamie Lee, good morning and it's good to have you today.
00:03:12.284 --> 00:03:12.735
Good morning.
00:03:12.735 --> 00:03:14.175
Thanks for having me, Phil.
00:03:14.365 --> 00:03:17.615
So, I'm excited to hear more about your story.
00:03:17.615 --> 00:03:19.925
I have heard that it is an amazing story.
00:03:20.092 --> 00:03:21.772
But I don't know that much about it.
00:03:21.772 --> 00:03:21.802
Okay.
00:03:21.902 --> 00:03:31.673
I'm excited for our listeners to be able to learn a little bit more about you and about what the Lord has done in your life and how the Lord has used Safe House Ministries in your life as well.
00:03:31.825 --> 00:03:31.855
Okay.
00:03:31.915 --> 00:03:34.336
So, Jamie Lee, would you start with maybe sharing.
00:03:34.832 --> 00:03:40.693
where you came from and, Where things started to go south and how it all started in your life.
00:03:40.723 --> 00:03:44.002
Okay, so, I'm originally from Southern California.
00:03:44.393 --> 00:03:52.787
I moved out here to Georgia when I married, my husband who was in the military, you know, we had, I had some.
00:03:52.899 --> 00:03:58.355
issues with alcohol, and using that to cope, when I was in my twenties.
00:03:58.462 --> 00:04:01.643
but my life really didn't get unmanageable at that point.
00:04:01.768 --> 00:04:03.967
once I got married, we had two beautiful kids.
00:04:04.698 --> 00:04:09.614
the stress of marriage and life and military life.
00:04:09.663 --> 00:04:11.818
really took a toll on me personally.
00:04:11.919 --> 00:04:17.369
I definitely started to, abuse alcohol and prescription drugs.
00:04:17.422 --> 00:04:19.302
when my marriage started to fail.
00:04:19.384 --> 00:04:23.899
we went to counseling and I never really was able to admit that I had a problem.
00:04:24.559 --> 00:04:25.908
that was just how I dealt with it.
00:04:26.478 --> 00:04:38.293
It wasn't until I lost everything when we got divorced, I left and, I left under the assumption I'm just gonna go stay with a friend until I get on my feet.
00:04:38.713 --> 00:04:41.163
And, I, I didn't have any good coping skills.
00:04:41.913 --> 00:04:55.134
I, I didn't know how to cope with the loss of my marriage and moving out, we were married for 14 years, that was a really hard time in my life and that's when, I was introduced to meth and, the streets.
00:04:55.449 --> 00:04:59.499
And, and I just lost myself at that point.
00:04:59.619 --> 00:05:00.699
I lost who I was.
00:05:00.699 --> 00:05:01.598
I didn't have any hope.
00:05:02.199 --> 00:05:05.079
So where were your, so when you got divorced, what happened to your kids?
00:05:05.079 --> 00:05:06.369
Where were they in the process?
00:05:06.369 --> 00:05:11.809
So my kids, my kids stayed with my husband, with my ex-husband, because I knew that.
00:05:12.983 --> 00:05:15.353
The things that I was doing were wrong.
00:05:15.774 --> 00:05:22.673
And I knew that taking my kids from their stable home, even though it was without me, was not appropriate.
00:05:22.704 --> 00:05:25.163
And, and that wasn't what, you know, they needed.
00:05:25.553 --> 00:05:31.829
So I left in order to, get myself better, get, get on my feet by myself.
00:05:31.889 --> 00:05:35.519
My intentions were good, but, my coping skills were not.
00:05:35.759 --> 00:05:40.278
So you had a heart and a desire To turn things around and get yourself to a better place.
00:05:40.418 --> 00:05:48.009
But with the pain and the, the struggles you, you faced difficulties and it ended up kind of going the opposite direction.
00:05:48.038 --> 00:05:48.579
That's right.
00:05:48.579 --> 00:05:53.079
And, and I didn't know, I, I didn't know how to do things by myself, you know?
00:05:53.129 --> 00:06:02.483
being married for 14 years, I was, it was my job to support the family and, You know, at that point in my life, I needed support myself.
00:06:02.934 --> 00:06:06.803
And being from California, all my family was there.
00:06:07.194 --> 00:06:11.564
So when I left my ex-husband, I, I didn't have any support.
00:06:11.963 --> 00:06:15.043
I didn't know any, I wasn't around any people doing good things.
00:06:15.824 --> 00:06:22.834
I, I, I was around people that weren't doing good things and, making some choices myself to not do some good things.
00:06:23.374 --> 00:06:29.485
So, Tell us a little bit about the, the emotional state, the mental state, where you were at at that time.
00:06:30.146 --> 00:06:30.536
Okay.
00:06:30.692 --> 00:06:32.831
I, I knew that what I was doing was wrong.
00:06:32.973 --> 00:06:34.533
I'll talk about my divorce hearing.
00:06:35.192 --> 00:06:37.293
I didn't know how to show up clean.
00:06:37.442 --> 00:06:43.274
I, I showed up, I showed up high because I didn't know how to deal with the emotions, that I was going through.
00:06:43.274 --> 00:06:55.213
I didn't know how to deal with the loss of everything that I knew life to be, even though it was, it was great in the beginning, up until, year 5, 6, 7, things were manageable.
00:06:55.634 --> 00:07:01.213
But it, it, it, they became quickly unmanageable and, and my choices didn't help.
00:07:01.274 --> 00:07:02.593
I went through depression.
00:07:03.014 --> 00:07:08.144
I stayed at the Bradley Center here in Columbus a couple of times for suicide attempts.
00:07:08.514 --> 00:07:20.103
there was a, a part, there was a part where I knew that if I didn't leave the home, Because it was over, and we were, we were definitely getting divorced.
00:07:20.374 --> 00:07:24.067
I knew that if I didn't leave, I, I wouldn't be alive much longer.
00:07:24.358 --> 00:07:28.288
So the, the latter half of your marriage and the divorce, all of that took place in Columbus?
00:07:28.348 --> 00:07:28.798
Yes.
00:07:29.033 --> 00:07:29.274
Yep.
00:07:29.394 --> 00:07:29.483
Okay.
00:07:29.483 --> 00:07:30.803
Fort Benning is where we lived.
00:07:30.809 --> 00:07:31.184
Mm-hmm.
00:07:31.374 --> 00:07:31.663
Okay.
00:07:31.963 --> 00:07:33.244
So what happened from there?
00:07:33.244 --> 00:07:37.303
So you were out, your kids were with your hus, your ex-husband now.
00:07:37.303 --> 00:07:37.305
Mm-hmm.
00:07:37.533 --> 00:07:39.363
And, you got introduced to meth.
00:07:39.413 --> 00:07:40.403
where did things go from there?
00:07:40.793 --> 00:07:45.113
insanity, you know, doing the same thing every day, expecting a different result.
00:07:45.624 --> 00:07:57.021
I remember a, I was out there in the streets with literally nowhere to go, every day waking up, not knowing where I'm gonna sleep the next night or how I'm going to eat.
00:07:57.471 --> 00:08:05.211
I knew that the road that I was going down was not what I needed to be doing, but I didn't know how to stop, you know?
00:08:05.310 --> 00:08:07.110
I remember feeling towards the end there.
00:08:07.110 --> 00:08:11.434
I remember feeling hopeless, I, I remember asking God to help me.
00:08:11.689 --> 00:08:14.543
I feel like every time I did that, I ended up going to jail.
00:08:14.834 --> 00:08:16.305
So you were living on the streets.
00:08:16.305 --> 00:08:18.165
Were you bouncing around trying to find friends?
00:08:18.165 --> 00:08:22.064
You could maybe just stay a night or two in a friend's house or just Yep.
00:08:22.125 --> 00:08:26.845
From house to house and, you know, living that lifestyle, your things get stolen.
00:08:27.245 --> 00:08:30.634
I mean, all of my IDs, my wallet was gone.
00:08:30.975 --> 00:08:39.764
the first time I went to jail was really, It, it was an eye-opener, but it definitely, I, I didn't change cuz I didn't know how to do things differently.
00:08:40.663 --> 00:08:49.994
You know, living, living that lifestyle of trying to get from A to B, but taking every which way around it, you know?
00:08:50.073 --> 00:08:51.884
it, it was chaos every day.
00:08:52.783 --> 00:08:53.144
Was it?
00:08:53.144 --> 00:08:54.764
What landed you in jail?
00:08:55.264 --> 00:08:56.254
possession charges.
00:08:56.714 --> 00:08:59.854
Yeah, the drugs and it was, it was always the drugs.
00:09:00.061 --> 00:09:02.650
So that sounds like the low point.
00:09:02.711 --> 00:09:02.831
Yep.
00:09:02.870 --> 00:09:09.317
what began to change in your life or what happened that maybe brought you to a turning point?
00:09:10.128 --> 00:09:17.427
So the last time that I ended up in Muscogee County Jail, I met Neil Richardson and he was the chaplain there.
00:09:17.548 --> 00:09:18.148
I.
00:09:18.323 --> 00:09:23.543
Remember talking to my public defender and, and telling her I didn't wanna go to prison.
00:09:23.705 --> 00:09:24.784
I don't belong in prison.
00:09:24.784 --> 00:09:25.835
I'm a good person.
00:09:25.969 --> 00:09:29.168
I, I just don't know how to stop living the way that I was living.
00:09:29.538 --> 00:09:32.869
and she said, well, let's see if we can't get you into a treatment program.
00:09:33.004 --> 00:09:34.894
so I got sentenced to tomorrow's hope.
00:09:35.083 --> 00:09:43.203
And I remember vividly like it was yesterday, being transported by Neil Richardson to the Trinity House.
00:09:43.594 --> 00:09:47.557
And, I did not stay for the first go round.
00:09:47.626 --> 00:09:53.412
it took, you know, I, I got to the Trinity House and I was supposed to be going to treatment, in about a week.
00:09:53.533 --> 00:10:06.073
And I, I remember calling my ex-husband to, I wanted to talk to the kids, you know, Hey, I'm, I'm clean and I'm out, and I just got into this program and I'm gonna be doing something good with my life.
00:10:06.464 --> 00:10:12.494
And it, it was that phone call where he told me that I wasn't worth anything.
00:10:12.494 --> 00:10:16.153
I wasn't gonna, it didn't matter what I did, you know, the kids weren't gonna love me.
00:10:16.543 --> 00:10:18.173
And, That sent me back out.
00:10:18.417 --> 00:10:23.547
That sent me back out, and I ran from the program and from probation for a year.
00:10:23.734 --> 00:10:32.774
And I remember the next day waking up and not being at the program and, and just feeling like, here we go again.
00:10:32.964 --> 00:10:34.014
Where am I gonna stay?
00:10:34.193 --> 00:10:35.153
What am I gonna do?
00:10:35.153 --> 00:10:36.144
How am I going to eat?
00:10:36.594 --> 00:10:38.557
I knew that my focus was not on.
00:10:39.104 --> 00:10:40.484
Getting high anymore.
00:10:40.484 --> 00:10:43.220
It was, I, I need to know how to live, you know?
00:10:43.610 --> 00:10:48.014
And so I was, I was already done at that point.
00:10:48.158 --> 00:10:57.837
using at that point was just a means to get by through the next day to hide the emotions, and the hopelessness that I was dealing with, it's another year.
00:10:57.837 --> 00:10:59.837
You were of hiding from the law.
00:10:59.842 --> 00:10:59.888
Mm-hmm.
00:10:59.967 --> 00:11:00.207
Just.
00:11:00.467 --> 00:11:04.457
Struggling through in the same kind of position that you had been before?
00:11:04.878 --> 00:11:04.998
Yeah.
00:11:05.087 --> 00:11:13.693
you had, I guess, given up and not accepted the offer to stay at the women's shelter, which was Trinity House at the time and, and the Tomorrow Hope Program.
00:11:13.693 --> 00:11:15.913
So after that year, what happened?
00:11:16.134 --> 00:11:17.714
So I ended up with a warrant.
00:11:18.000 --> 00:11:25.971
I was in the, in a vehicle with somebody that got pulled over and they ran my name and, and they said, well, you're going back.
00:11:26.331 --> 00:11:32.673
So I went back to jail and, I was afforded a second opportunity to do tomorrow's hope.
00:11:33.063 --> 00:11:42.453
And, I just remember crying, like, thank God, because, I knew, I knew I needed the help and I hadn't really heard much about the program.
00:11:42.548 --> 00:11:49.504
I didn't really give it a chance, but I knew, what I did know was I didn't wanna live the way that I, I had been living for that last year.
00:11:49.634 --> 00:11:50.923
I didn't wanna run anymore.
00:11:51.234 --> 00:11:52.553
and it didn't matter what it took.
00:11:52.653 --> 00:11:57.227
I, I was gonna take suggestions and do what I needed to do to get better for me.
00:11:57.375 --> 00:11:57.644
Yeah.
00:11:57.644 --> 00:12:02.585
So, so this time you took it more seriously and you were ready To do the hard work.
00:12:02.585 --> 00:12:03.394
To make the change.
00:12:03.399 --> 00:12:03.644
Yeah.
00:12:03.875 --> 00:12:04.745
So tell us about that.
00:12:04.745 --> 00:12:05.914
Tell us that process.
00:12:05.965 --> 00:12:10.152
so surrender, I had to surrender every part of my life.
00:12:10.251 --> 00:12:14.062
not picking up was the easiest part for me.
00:12:14.129 --> 00:12:18.046
going to tomorrow's hope, I was introduced to the 12 steps.
00:12:18.327 --> 00:12:21.087
And I still use those steps today.
00:12:21.368 --> 00:12:24.904
my, my clean date is May 21st, 2020.
00:12:25.205 --> 00:12:27.725
So this month I'll be three years clean.
00:12:28.294 --> 00:12:31.195
And, not picking up was the easy part for me.
00:12:31.200 --> 00:12:38.585
I, I had to learn and work hard and I, and I still work hard every day on how to, how to live clean, you know?
00:12:38.894 --> 00:12:41.684
abstaining and living clean are two different things.
00:12:41.965 --> 00:12:45.445
I fell into a church family that I absolutely love.
00:12:45.591 --> 00:12:52.592
I fell into a support system, a network of people that are living clean, that are working steps in their life.
00:12:52.715 --> 00:12:57.028
my higher power is what I rely on every day, Awesome.
00:12:57.028 --> 00:13:01.586
So the Lord had a purpose for your life, and he was there all along.
00:13:01.645 --> 00:13:03.566
He led you, he guided you.
00:13:03.725 --> 00:13:07.946
tell us about when you came to know God in a personal way.
00:13:08.140 --> 00:13:13.903
Well, I grew up with my dad always telling me about, Jesus and how much he loves me.
00:13:14.173 --> 00:13:16.873
Well, I didn't grow up in church, but I did grow up.
00:13:16.923 --> 00:13:19.263
I went to a, a private Christian school.
00:13:19.798 --> 00:13:21.238
elementary through sixth grade.
00:13:21.238 --> 00:13:23.788
So I feel like I got a pretty good foundation.
00:13:24.087 --> 00:13:43.888
but I never really understood, or I guess really accepted the fact that, that God was real until going through everything that I've been through and being able to look back and see like, I wouldn't have made it through all of these things if it wasn't for God being there, he never turned his back on me.
00:13:44.028 --> 00:13:46.738
I, I definitely turned away from him a number of times.
00:13:46.811 --> 00:13:48.520
but he never turned his back on me.
00:13:48.520 --> 00:13:51.571
He, and he always welcomed me with open arms.
00:13:51.750 --> 00:13:59.238
and I, I talk to him every day, every day I work on my relationship with him cuz he's important and, You mentioned purpose.
00:13:59.357 --> 00:14:09.711
So I, I never in my life have understood what people meant when they said that they had a calling on their life, until after graduating the program.
00:14:09.740 --> 00:14:30.735
Tomorrow's Hope, after 12 months and, getting a job and working and saving money and moving out of the women's shelter, and being on my own Safe House Ministries called me and asked me, If I wanted a job, if I wanted to work in the women's shelter, and I was reluctant to say yes, it took me two months to say yes to that.
00:14:30.851 --> 00:14:32.652
I prayed and prayed and prayed.
00:14:33.162 --> 00:14:38.682
I was working at Wade Cleaners at that time, and I just remember at their great company.
00:14:39.052 --> 00:14:39.981
they're great people.
00:14:40.292 --> 00:14:43.922
but I remember going to work every day saying, this is, this can't be it.
00:14:44.041 --> 00:14:45.510
I'm living clean now.
00:14:45.691 --> 00:14:47.581
My thinking has changed.
00:14:47.691 --> 00:14:50.370
I, I want to grow in every way.
00:14:50.880 --> 00:14:58.431
so I accepted the job at Safe House and I started as a house manager at the women's shelter that I had just left.
00:14:58.596 --> 00:15:03.433
And, I did that for a few months and then, I moved into case management and.
00:15:03.596 --> 00:15:10.105
After a couple months of that, the director position came open and they offered me the position.
00:15:10.243 --> 00:15:18.514
God has used my past and my mistakes, to put me somewhere where I have purpose every day.
00:15:18.590 --> 00:15:21.975
I get to be a part of other people getting into recovery.
00:15:22.102 --> 00:15:27.534
I work with public defenders, I work with probation, a lot of different agencies locally.
00:15:28.027 --> 00:15:34.114
getting people off the street and affording them the same opportunity that was given to me twice.
00:15:34.274 --> 00:15:37.197
And it's, it's, it's really, it's wonderful.
00:15:37.453 --> 00:15:40.303
every part of my story isn't perfect and amazing.
00:15:40.583 --> 00:15:44.039
my children still don't speak to me even though I'm three years clean.
00:15:44.159 --> 00:15:49.907
I, I call'em every other day and, and listen to silence on the phone, and that's really difficult for me.
00:15:49.957 --> 00:15:53.879
being a mother, that's your purpose from that moment on forever.
00:15:54.309 --> 00:16:05.966
That's your purpose in life, to be a mother and, I feel like God, bringing me to Safe House Ministries has given me the purpose that I was lacking because of my choices.
00:16:06.102 --> 00:16:07.682
So how old are your kids now?
00:16:08.102 --> 00:16:10.023
So my kids are 16 and 14.
00:16:10.159 --> 00:16:33.105
it is amazing and it, seems that, God has done such a work in your life that you now have the strength in him to even endure continued pain, with what you described with your kids, but, but yet you have that strength of faith, that strength of purpose, that relationship with the Lord, that even through the pain, you can keep walking the right path.
00:16:33.105 --> 00:16:34.815
Keep staying clean, keep doing.
00:16:34.919 --> 00:16:36.960
What the Lord wants you to do and helping others.
00:16:37.059 --> 00:16:38.590
that, that is really neat.
00:16:38.700 --> 00:16:47.395
it really seems like your life went from a place of knowing about God and then finding yourself in some very heavy darkness.
00:16:47.513 --> 00:16:52.663
but at some point it seems like you went from knowing about God to actually having a personal relationship.
00:16:52.840 --> 00:16:53.440
With him.
00:16:53.932 --> 00:16:54.682
Tell us about that.
00:16:54.846 --> 00:17:01.091
the hopelessness that I felt while living that way, I, I always felt like I was by myself.
00:17:01.224 --> 00:17:02.453
I always felt like I was alone.
00:17:02.453 --> 00:17:03.114
Nobody understood.
00:17:03.321 --> 00:17:13.294
it wasn't until getting into the rooms of AA and na, And working some steps that I realized I wasn't alone here on this earth.
00:17:13.426 --> 00:17:21.977
Other people are going through and have been through the same things that I'm going through and have been through, and, and they're doing amazing things in their lives.
00:17:22.054 --> 00:17:25.354
And so something is working there.
00:17:25.471 --> 00:17:28.784
Through the 12 steps, I found that relationship with God.
00:17:28.801 --> 00:17:33.791
in aa we say, you know, a higher, my higher power of, of my own understanding.
00:17:34.061 --> 00:17:36.281
And for me, that's, that's Jesus, you know?
00:17:36.409 --> 00:17:43.365
he has walked with me through everything and, I used to pray early in recovery.
00:17:43.365 --> 00:17:48.729
I used to pray that, you know, God, just gimme my kids back, you know, gimme my kids back.
00:17:48.798 --> 00:17:50.538
I want, I wanna be a mother again.
00:17:50.657 --> 00:17:58.842
through having a relationship with God and, and really trusting him with everything, it's made it a lot easier for me to.
00:17:58.900 --> 00:18:02.047
Have faith that he has a purpose for my life.
00:18:02.109 --> 00:18:07.390
And even if it's not to be a mother in this season, it, it's something else, something bigger.
00:18:07.509 --> 00:18:12.663
And he's working all of these things for his good and for mine and for other people's.
00:18:12.741 --> 00:18:15.968
my, my prayer these days is much different.
00:18:16.001 --> 00:18:17.771
I pray that God will prepare me.
00:18:17.836 --> 00:18:23.090
For when my children are ready to come back into my life, and I just keep going every day.
00:18:23.183 --> 00:18:23.423
Wow.
00:18:23.513 --> 00:18:24.923
That's, that's pretty amazing.
00:18:25.090 --> 00:18:29.824
So tell us a little more about your present role, your title within Safe House Ministries.
00:18:29.907 --> 00:18:33.231
you are one of the, the leaders in that organization.
00:18:33.281 --> 00:18:34.392
so tell us a little more about.
00:18:34.480 --> 00:18:36.069
What that looks like for you.
00:18:36.069 --> 00:18:37.509
I know you mentioned a little bit about it.
00:18:37.515 --> 00:18:37.589
Mm-hmm.
00:18:37.670 --> 00:18:38.759
But expand on that Okay.
00:18:38.759 --> 00:18:43.109
So I am the Director of Connection Services for Safe House Ministries.
00:18:43.165 --> 00:18:50.923
I supervise, all three of our shelters, the women's shelter, Grace House, the men's shelter, freedom House, and the family Shelter, Trinity House.
00:18:51.364 --> 00:18:56.253
I supervise house management, facility supervisors, and case management.
00:18:56.253 --> 00:19:00.354
I also supervise the, connections department at our day center.
00:19:00.398 --> 00:19:02.648
And the rapid rehousing case management team.
00:19:02.778 --> 00:19:12.755
I also handle the grant coordinations for our ESG funding, and that's, something that, walking into work every day, is a blessing.
00:19:12.806 --> 00:19:16.405
I get to help, like I mentioned earlier, I get to help folks get into treatment.
00:19:16.865 --> 00:19:23.233
I handle all of those coordinations as well, working with public defenders, pos, it's really, it's awesome.
00:19:23.534 --> 00:19:25.634
It's awesome to be on this side of things.
00:19:25.733 --> 00:19:31.703
I have probation officers calling my phone every day for very different reasons than before.
00:19:32.163 --> 00:19:35.044
I don't work as closely with, specific client.
00:19:35.184 --> 00:19:42.801
as I did when I was a case manager, but I do have the opportunity to, to speak to some clients sometimes when they're having a hard time.
00:19:42.872 --> 00:19:45.989
And I did that yesterday with one in particular.
00:19:46.092 --> 00:19:47.811
And it was, he was ready to leave.
00:19:48.214 --> 00:19:51.355
He was ready to leave cuz he was having a hard time with somebody else.
00:19:51.355 --> 00:19:53.875
And, I, I made time in my day to.
00:19:53.981 --> 00:20:05.814
Sit with him and, talk to him about his options, cuz I've been that person that has left and, and it didn't get me anywhere good, And, to come back into work today and to see him there was pretty awesome.
00:20:05.971 --> 00:20:06.330
Wow.
00:20:06.391 --> 00:20:07.624
So that is neat.
00:20:07.663 --> 00:20:09.034
That's really awesome.
00:20:09.182 --> 00:20:14.442
Tell us a little bit about tomorrow's hope, which is the Substance Abuse Treatment Program.
00:20:14.630 --> 00:20:26.782
I know it's an intensive outpatient program, and as you mentioned, we do have the capability with Safe House Ministries where we can offer the shelters, for individuals who would otherwise be homeless as they go through the program.
00:20:26.788 --> 00:20:26.972
Mm-hmm.
00:20:27.083 --> 00:20:35.006
But tell us about tomorrow's hope, what it meant to you, and what that process looked like and how it helps others today.
00:20:35.131 --> 00:20:35.431
Okay.
00:20:35.681 --> 00:20:43.207
so tomorrow's hope is a nine to 12 month, state licensed, CARF accredited, intensive outpatient treatment program.
00:20:43.305 --> 00:20:47.714
tomorrow's hope is gonna introduce, well, I can tell you what it did for me.
00:20:47.775 --> 00:20:54.384
Tomorrow's hope introduced me to, the 12 steps, the groups and the counselors in tomorrow's hope.
00:20:54.465 --> 00:20:58.271
Were that initial support system that I was lacking.
00:20:58.368 --> 00:21:09.808
I was able to go into group every day and talk about, the root of some of these issues and figure out that, drugs and alcohol were just a symptom of a disease, of alcoholism that I had.
00:21:09.858 --> 00:21:11.838
it helped me become really self-aware.
00:21:11.979 --> 00:21:14.739
definitely gave me the tools to work on myself every day.
00:21:14.864 --> 00:21:21.039
and the support that, that was the biggest thing for me was with not being from here and all my family in California.
00:21:21.180 --> 00:21:25.534
I didn't know where to turn and tomorrow's hope was that initial support system for me.
00:21:25.636 --> 00:21:27.317
It kind of guided me in the steps.
00:21:27.646 --> 00:21:33.763
How to work on my life and, and how to, how to get connected, how to stay connected with like-minded people.
00:21:33.882 --> 00:21:34.902
sponsorship.
00:21:34.993 --> 00:21:37.304
tomorrow's hope introduced me to a whole new way of life.
00:21:37.394 --> 00:21:45.480
So during your time with tomorrow's hope, were there times when you came close to dropping out again and running away again?
00:21:45.750 --> 00:21:47.084
And if so, what?
00:21:47.189 --> 00:21:48.118
Kept you there.
00:21:48.148 --> 00:21:53.317
what was it that helped you to not take those, temptations to fall back?
00:21:53.421 --> 00:21:53.691
Hmm.
00:21:53.787 --> 00:21:57.237
I could speak on the first time that I actually did leave.
00:21:57.386 --> 00:22:01.106
you know, once I came back that, that second time I was ready.
00:22:01.376 --> 00:22:03.176
I was sick and tired of being sick and tired.
00:22:03.226 --> 00:22:07.996
I knew that the way that I was doing things was not getting me anywhere in life.
00:22:08.086 --> 00:22:09.675
It was only worse and worse.
00:22:09.766 --> 00:22:13.215
the biggest thing that I had to learn was to take suggestions.
00:22:13.365 --> 00:22:15.435
You know, I had to move my pride out of the way.
00:22:15.441 --> 00:22:16.851
My ego, I had to.
00:22:16.961 --> 00:22:22.672
I had to realize and wake up every morning, look in the mirror and Jamie Lee, you don't know anything about living clean.
00:22:22.778 --> 00:22:28.624
So, let's get up and let's humble myself and, and take some suggestions from the program.
00:22:28.748 --> 00:22:30.268
take some suggestions from a sponsor.
00:22:30.842 --> 00:22:33.662
one thing that helped me was realizing that I wasn't by myself.
00:22:33.710 --> 00:22:34.549
I wasn't alone.
00:22:34.636 --> 00:22:39.837
the counselors in tomorrow's hope, a lot of'em have been through it, and, and are addicts and alcoholics themselves.
00:22:39.961 --> 00:22:44.411
just have to be open-minded and willing, and the program will show you the way to go.
00:22:44.718 --> 00:22:45.077
Wow.
00:22:45.167 --> 00:22:47.644
So you mentioned the word surrender.
00:22:47.673 --> 00:22:47.763
Mm-hmm.
00:22:48.003 --> 00:22:53.428
And I hear you talking about letting go of pride and embracing humility and just.
00:22:53.499 --> 00:22:54.128
Receiving.
00:22:54.278 --> 00:22:57.199
Receiving words of suggestion, receiving.
00:22:57.256 --> 00:23:03.226
Receiving the things that people said that you needed to do to make those positive changes.
00:23:03.327 --> 00:23:08.698
Someone else mentioned in a previous podcast that he felt like it was like sandpaper.
00:23:08.698 --> 00:23:15.028
It was just a painful process of, of shaving away all the things that needed, he needed to get rid of.
00:23:15.028 --> 00:23:20.261
And would you feel like that's maybe an accurate description or it it definitely can be.
00:23:20.530 --> 00:23:25.496
working with my sponsor even now to this day, life is always gonna show up.
00:23:25.540 --> 00:23:28.090
it, it's how we deal with it that matters.
00:23:28.126 --> 00:23:30.946
I don't run from my feelings or my emotions.
00:23:30.984 --> 00:23:34.134
today, I take an honest look at them.
00:23:34.231 --> 00:23:36.632
I take an honest look at my character defects.
00:23:37.021 --> 00:23:43.865
and just the same, I take an honest look at my assets, I have self-worth today, and that's, that's a big deal for me.
00:23:43.973 --> 00:23:53.607
people in the program of tomorrow's hope and people in AA and na in the rooms loved me until I loved, until I could love myself.
00:23:53.738 --> 00:23:55.028
That, that's amazing.
00:23:55.178 --> 00:24:06.540
Jimmy Lee, thank you for sharing your story, your testimony, sharing what God has done in your life, sharing your journey in Safe House Ministries and tomorrow's hope and.
00:24:06.604 --> 00:24:18.134
What an amazing, place you are in now where the Lord has just given you the opportunity to be a help to so many other people, to give hope, to give those second chances.
00:24:18.193 --> 00:24:18.374
Yeah.
00:24:18.763 --> 00:24:19.784
that is incredible.
00:24:19.874 --> 00:24:20.775
So thank you for being here.
00:24:20.784 --> 00:24:23.351
Thank you for sharing and God bless you.
00:24:23.351 --> 00:24:24.191
Thank you for having me.
00:24:24.401 --> 00:24:25.480
And your path ahead.
00:24:25.570 --> 00:24:26.050
Yeah.
00:24:26.144 --> 00:24:28.124
So, Jamie Lee, one last question.
00:24:28.194 --> 00:24:37.878
What parting words of advice would you like to give to others maybe who are struggling and, who need some changes in their lives?
00:24:38.011 --> 00:24:38.311
Hmm.
00:24:38.457 --> 00:24:40.797
I would definitely say you are not alone.
00:24:40.906 --> 00:24:42.186
You are not alone.
00:24:42.606 --> 00:24:44.106
find the rooms of na.
00:24:44.227 --> 00:24:45.426
Find the rooms of aa.
00:24:45.625 --> 00:24:46.796
find a church home.
00:24:46.913 --> 00:24:47.843
Reach out for help.
00:24:47.952 --> 00:24:48.192
There.
00:24:48.192 --> 00:24:48.913
There is hope.
00:24:49.019 --> 00:24:49.378
Awesome.
00:24:49.828 --> 00:24:50.398
There is.
00:24:50.638 --> 00:24:50.878
Thank you.
00:24:51.009 --> 00:24:51.659
You're welcome.
00:24:52.208 --> 00:24:53.528
you mind if we close that in prayer.
00:24:53.722 --> 00:24:54.472
Absolutely.
00:24:54.618 --> 00:24:55.909
Father, thank you for Jamie Lee.
00:24:55.939 --> 00:24:58.405
Thank you for what you've done in her life.
00:24:58.465 --> 00:24:59.846
Thank you for leading her.
00:24:59.923 --> 00:25:02.054
To Neil when she was in jail.
00:25:02.137 --> 00:25:14.520
Thank you for leading her to go from a place of knowing about you, to actually knowing you personally, to being able to receive Jesus as her savior, and to build that personal relationship with you.
00:25:14.770 --> 00:25:15.601
Bless her path.
00:25:15.770 --> 00:25:17.340
Guide her path, Lord.
00:25:17.915 --> 00:25:29.885
If it be your will, then I pray you might open the door for her to be able to have a relationship with her children and just to invest in them and love them, and to serve them and, and be a mother that she wants to be.
00:25:30.756 --> 00:25:36.355
Lord, thank you that you are using her to help so many people's lives.
00:25:37.685 --> 00:25:46.746
Father, she's able to help others who are mothers, others who are fathers, others who, who need help.
00:25:47.385 --> 00:25:48.496
Bless her in that path.
00:25:49.096 --> 00:25:54.016
Just continue to grow her as a person and her influence and her leadership.
00:25:54.346 --> 00:26:02.205
Protect her from any traps that life may bring her way and just bless the future for her life.
00:26:02.205 --> 00:26:03.256
I pray in Jesus' name.
00:26:03.645 --> 00:26:03.976
Amen.
00:26:04.246 --> 00:26:04.786
Amen.

About a week ago, we celebrated Easter Sunday, which is a wonderful celebration of the resurrection of Jesus.
00:00:10.949 --> 00:00:16.260
So today we are gonna do a resurrection episode.
00:00:16.390 --> 00:00:18.579
This is one of our episodes that has been downloaded.
00:00:19.285 --> 00:00:22.225
More than almost any other episode.
00:00:22.285 --> 00:00:24.864
It's an amazing story of Jamie Lee.
00:00:24.925 --> 00:00:35.195
It was posted, uh, a few, several years ago, one of our very first episodes, and, resurrection is the spirit of what Safe House Ministries is all about as well.
00:00:35.615 --> 00:00:38.645
The resurrection of life back from.
00:00:39.049 --> 00:00:52.850
People's lives who are filled with death and addiction and destruction, the death of marriages, the death of relationships with children, the death of so many things, their friends through overdoses, so many things.
00:00:52.850 --> 00:00:54.109
Death is just all around.
00:00:54.109 --> 00:00:58.460
And what Safe House Ministries does is resurrect people's lives.
00:00:58.640 --> 00:01:00.020
So enjoy this episode.
00:01:00.395 --> 00:01:02.164

00:02:24.215 --> 00:02:26.794
Over 300 hot meals every day.
00:02:27.125 --> 00:02:29.164
Free clothing and so much more.
00:02:29.525 --> 00:02:38.465
One of the most incredible services that safe house ministries provides is our free nine to 12 month intensive outpatient substance abuse program.
00:02:38.824 --> 00:02:47.254
Which is state licensed and has no waitlist setting it apart from nearly all other state licensed recovery programs, which are often very expensive.
00:02:47.555 --> 00:02:50.314
And nearly always have a wait list of two weeks or longer.
00:02:50.437 --> 00:02:52.147
Almost 100% of those.
00:02:52.268 --> 00:02:57.074
Individual staying in our shelters who follow our three phase program and up fully employed.
00:02:57.170 --> 00:03:03.805
And 68% of individuals who stay at least one night with us, end up finding work and moving into their own home.
00:03:04.074 --> 00:03:07.104
Thank you for being with us today and listening to our podcast.
00:03:07.344 --> 00:03:09.474
We hope you enjoy this week's episode.
00:03:09.965 --> 00:03:12.216
So Jamie Lee, good morning and it's good to have you today.
00:03:12.284 --> 00:03:12.735
Good morning.
00:03:12.735 --> 00:03:14.175
Thanks for having me, Phil.
00:03:14.365 --> 00:03:17.615
So, I'm excited to hear more about your story.
00:03:17.615 --> 00:03:19.925
I have heard that it is an amazing story.
00:03:20.092 --> 00:03:21.772
But I don't know that much about it.
00:03:21.772 --> 00:03:21.802
Okay.
00:03:21.902 --> 00:03:31.673
I'm excited for our listeners to be able to learn a little bit more about you and about what the Lord has done in your life and how the Lord has used Safe House Ministries in your life as well.
00:03:31.825 --> 00:03:31.855
Okay.
00:03:31.915 --> 00:03:34.336
So, Jamie Lee, would you start with maybe sharing.
00:03:34.832 --> 00:03:40.693
where you came from and, Where things started to go south and how it all started in your life.
00:03:40.723 --> 00:03:44.002
Okay, so, I'm originally from Southern California.
00:03:44.393 --> 00:03:52.787
I moved out here to Georgia when I married, my husband who was in the military, you know, we had, I had some.
00:03:52.899 --> 00:03:58.355
issues with alcohol, and using that to cope, when I was in my twenties.
00:03:58.462 --> 00:04:01.643
but my life really didn't get unmanageable at that point.
00:04:01.768 --> 00:04:03.967
once I got married, we had two beautiful kids.
00:04:04.698 --> 00:04:09.614
the stress of marriage and life and military life.
00:04:09.663 --> 00:04:11.818
really took a toll on me personally.
00:04:11.919 --> 00:04:17.369
I definitely started to, abuse alcohol and prescription drugs.
00:04:17.422 --> 00:04:19.302
when my marriage started to fail.
00:04:19.384 --> 00:04:23.899
we went to counseling and I never really was able to admit that I had a problem.
00:04:24.559 --> 00:04:25.908
that was just how I dealt with it.
00:04:26.478 --> 00:04:38.293
It wasn't until I lost everything when we got divorced, I left and, I left under the assumption I'm just gonna go stay with a friend until I get on my feet.
00:04:38.713 --> 00:04:41.163
And, I, I didn't have any good coping skills.
00:04:41.913 --> 00:04:55.134
I, I didn't know how to cope with the loss of my marriage and moving out, we were married for 14 years, that was a really hard time in my life and that's when, I was introduced to meth and, the streets.
00:04:55.449 --> 00:04:59.499
And, and I just lost myself at that point.
00:04:59.619 --> 00:05:00.699
I lost who I was.
00:05:00.699 --> 00:05:01.598
I didn't have any hope.
00:05:02.199 --> 00:05:05.079
So where were your, so when you got divorced, what happened to your kids?
00:05:05.079 --> 00:05:06.369
Where were they in the process?
00:05:06.369 --> 00:05:11.809
So my kids, my kids stayed with my husband, with my ex-husband, because I knew that.
00:05:12.983 --> 00:05:15.353
The things that I was doing were wrong.
00:05:15.774 --> 00:05:22.673
And I knew that taking my kids from their stable home, even though it was without me, was not appropriate.
00:05:22.704 --> 00:05:25.163
And, and that wasn't what, you know, they needed.
00:05:25.553 --> 00:05:31.829
So I left in order to, get myself better, get, get on my feet by myself.
00:05:31.889 --> 00:05:35.519
My intentions were good, but, my coping skills were not.
00:05:35.759 --> 00:05:40.278
So you had a heart and a desire To turn things around and get yourself to a better place.
00:05:40.418 --> 00:05:48.009
But with the pain and the, the struggles you, you faced difficulties and it ended up kind of going the opposite direction.
00:05:48.038 --> 00:05:48.579
That's right.
00:05:48.579 --> 00:05:53.079
And, and I didn't know, I, I didn't know how to do things by myself, you know?
00:05:53.129 --> 00:06:02.483
being married for 14 years, I was, it was my job to support the family and, You know, at that point in my life, I needed support myself.
00:06:02.934 --> 00:06:06.803
And being from California, all my family was there.
00:06:07.194 --> 00:06:11.564
So when I left my ex-husband, I, I didn't have any support.
00:06:11.963 --> 00:06:15.043
I didn't know any, I wasn't around any people doing good things.
00:06:15.824 --> 00:06:22.834
I, I, I was around people that weren't doing good things and, making some choices myself to not do some good things.
00:06:23.374 --> 00:06:29.485
So, Tell us a little bit about the, the emotional state, the mental state, where you were at at that time.
00:06:30.146 --> 00:06:30.536
Okay.
00:06:30.692 --> 00:06:32.831
I, I knew that what I was doing was wrong.
00:06:32.973 --> 00:06:34.533
I'll talk about my divorce hearing.
00:06:35.192 --> 00:06:37.293
I didn't know how to show up clean.
00:06:37.442 --> 00:06:43.274
I, I showed up, I showed up high because I didn't know how to deal with the emotions, that I was going through.
00:06:43.274 --> 00:06:55.213
I didn't know how to deal with the loss of everything that I knew life to be, even though it was, it was great in the beginning, up until, year 5, 6, 7, things were manageable.
00:06:55.634 --> 00:07:01.213
But it, it, it, they became quickly unmanageable and, and my choices didn't help.
00:07:01.274 --> 00:07:02.593
I went through depression.
00:07:03.014 --> 00:07:08.144
I stayed at the Bradley Center here in Columbus a couple of times for suicide attempts.
00:07:08.514 --> 00:07:20.103
there was a, a part, there was a part where I knew that if I didn't leave the home, Because it was over, and we were, we were definitely getting divorced.
00:07:20.374 --> 00:07:24.067
I knew that if I didn't leave, I, I wouldn't be alive much longer.
00:07:24.358 --> 00:07:28.288
So the, the latter half of your marriage and the divorce, all of that took place in Columbus?
00:07:28.348 --> 00:07:28.798
Yes.
00:07:29.033 --> 00:07:29.274
Yep.
00:07:29.394 --> 00:07:29.483
Okay.
00:07:29.483 --> 00:07:30.803
Fort Benning is where we lived.
00:07:30.809 --> 00:07:31.184
Mm-hmm.
00:07:31.374 --> 00:07:31.663
Okay.
00:07:31.963 --> 00:07:33.244
So what happened from there?
00:07:33.244 --> 00:07:37.303
So you were out, your kids were with your hus, your ex-husband now.
00:07:37.303 --> 00:07:37.305
Mm-hmm.
00:07:37.533 --> 00:07:39.363
And, you got introduced to meth.
00:07:39.413 --> 00:07:40.403
where did things go from there?
00:07:40.793 --> 00:07:45.113
insanity, you know, doing the same thing every day, expecting a different result.
00:07:45.624 --> 00:07:57.021
I remember a, I was out there in the streets with literally nowhere to go, every day waking up, not knowing where I'm gonna sleep the next night or how I'm going to eat.
00:07:57.471 --> 00:08:05.211
I knew that the road that I was going down was not what I needed to be doing, but I didn't know how to stop, you know?
00:08:05.310 --> 00:08:07.110
I remember feeling towards the end there.
00:08:07.110 --> 00:08:11.434
I remember feeling hopeless, I, I remember asking God to help me.
00:08:11.689 --> 00:08:14.543
I feel like every time I did that, I ended up going to jail.
00:08:14.834 --> 00:08:16.305
So you were living on the streets.
00:08:16.305 --> 00:08:18.165
Were you bouncing around trying to find friends?
00:08:18.165 --> 00:08:22.064
You could maybe just stay a night or two in a friend's house or just Yep.
00:08:22.125 --> 00:08:26.845
From house to house and, you know, living that lifestyle, your things get stolen.
00:08:27.245 --> 00:08:30.634
I mean, all of my IDs, my wallet was gone.
00:08:30.975 --> 00:08:39.764
the first time I went to jail was really, It, it was an eye-opener, but it definitely, I, I didn't change cuz I didn't know how to do things differently.
00:08:40.663 --> 00:08:49.994
You know, living, living that lifestyle of trying to get from A to B, but taking every which way around it, you know?
00:08:50.073 --> 00:08:51.884
it, it was chaos every day.
00:08:52.783 --> 00:08:53.144
Was it?
00:08:53.144 --> 00:08:54.764
What landed you in jail?
00:08:55.264 --> 00:08:56.254
possession charges.
00:08:56.714 --> 00:08:59.854
Yeah, the drugs and it was, it was always the drugs.
00:09:00.061 --> 00:09:02.650
So that sounds like the low point.
00:09:02.711 --> 00:09:02.831
Yep.
00:09:02.870 --> 00:09:09.317
what began to change in your life or what happened that maybe brought you to a turning point?
00:09:10.128 --> 00:09:17.427
So the last time that I ended up in Muscogee County Jail, I met Neil Richardson and he was the chaplain there.
00:09:17.548 --> 00:09:18.148
I.
00:09:18.323 --> 00:09:23.543
Remember talking to my public defender and, and telling her I didn't wanna go to prison.
00:09:23.705 --> 00:09:24.784
I don't belong in prison.
00:09:24.784 --> 00:09:25.835
I'm a good person.
00:09:25.969 --> 00:09:29.168
I, I just don't know how to stop living the way that I was living.
00:09:29.538 --> 00:09:32.869
and she said, well, let's see if we can't get you into a treatment program.
00:09:33.004 --> 00:09:34.894
so I got sentenced to tomorrow's hope.
00:09:35.083 --> 00:09:43.203
And I remember vividly like it was yesterday, being transported by Neil Richardson to the Trinity House.
00:09:43.594 --> 00:09:47.557
And, I did not stay for the first go round.
00:09:47.626 --> 00:09:53.412
it took, you know, I, I got to the Trinity House and I was supposed to be going to treatment, in about a week.
00:09:53.533 --> 00:10:06.073
And I, I remember calling my ex-husband to, I wanted to talk to the kids, you know, Hey, I'm, I'm clean and I'm out, and I just got into this program and I'm gonna be doing something good with my life.
00:10:06.464 --> 00:10:12.494
And it, it was that phone call where he told me that I wasn't worth anything.
00:10:12.494 --> 00:10:16.153
I wasn't gonna, it didn't matter what I did, you know, the kids weren't gonna love me.
00:10:16.543 --> 00:10:18.173
And, That sent me back out.
00:10:18.417 --> 00:10:23.547
That sent me back out, and I ran from the program and from probation for a year.
00:10:23.734 --> 00:10:32.774
And I remember the next day waking up and not being at the program and, and just feeling like, here we go again.
00:10:32.964 --> 00:10:34.014
Where am I gonna stay?
00:10:34.193 --> 00:10:35.153
What am I gonna do?
00:10:35.153 --> 00:10:36.144
How am I going to eat?
00:10:36.594 --> 00:10:38.557
I knew that my focus was not on.
00:10:39.104 --> 00:10:40.484
Getting high anymore.
00:10:40.484 --> 00:10:43.220
It was, I, I need to know how to live, you know?
00:10:43.610 --> 00:10:48.014
And so I was, I was already done at that point.
00:10:48.158 --> 00:10:57.837
using at that point was just a means to get by through the next day to hide the emotions, and the hopelessness that I was dealing with, it's another year.
00:10:57.837 --> 00:10:59.837
You were of hiding from the law.
00:10:59.842 --> 00:10:59.888
Mm-hmm.
00:10:59.967 --> 00:11:00.207
Just.
00:11:00.467 --> 00:11:04.457
Struggling through in the same kind of position that you had been before?
00:11:04.878 --> 00:11:04.998
Yeah.
00:11:05.087 --> 00:11:13.693
you had, I guess, given up and not accepted the offer to stay at the women's shelter, which was Trinity House at the time and, and the Tomorrow Hope Program.
00:11:13.693 --> 00:11:15.913
So after that year, what happened?
00:11:16.134 --> 00:11:17.714
So I ended up with a warrant.
00:11:18.000 --> 00:11:25.971
I was in the, in a vehicle with somebody that got pulled over and they ran my name and, and they said, well, you're going back.
00:11:26.331 --> 00:11:32.673
So I went back to jail and, I was afforded a second opportunity to do tomorrow's hope.
00:11:33.063 --> 00:11:42.453
And, I just remember crying, like, thank God, because, I knew, I knew I needed the help and I hadn't really heard much about the program.
00:11:42.548 --> 00:11:49.504
I didn't really give it a chance, but I knew, what I did know was I didn't wanna live the way that I, I had been living for that last year.
00:11:49.634 --> 00:11:50.923
I didn't wanna run anymore.
00:11:51.234 --> 00:11:52.553
and it didn't matter what it took.
00:11:52.653 --> 00:11:57.227
I, I was gonna take suggestions and do what I needed to do to get better for me.
00:11:57.375 --> 00:11:57.644
Yeah.
00:11:57.644 --> 00:12:02.585
So, so this time you took it more seriously and you were ready To do the hard work.
00:12:02.585 --> 00:12:03.394
To make the change.
00:12:03.399 --> 00:12:03.644
Yeah.
00:12:03.875 --> 00:12:04.745
So tell us about that.
00:12:04.745 --> 00:12:05.914
Tell us that process.
00:12:05.965 --> 00:12:10.152
so surrender, I had to surrender every part of my life.
00:12:10.251 --> 00:12:14.062
not picking up was the easiest part for me.
00:12:14.129 --> 00:12:18.046
going to tomorrow's hope, I was introduced to the 12 steps.
00:12:18.327 --> 00:12:21.087
And I still use those steps today.
00:12:21.368 --> 00:12:24.904
my, my clean date is May 21st, 2020.
00:12:25.205 --> 00:12:27.725
So this month I'll be three years clean.
00:12:28.294 --> 00:12:31.195
And, not picking up was the easy part for me.
00:12:31.200 --> 00:12:38.585
I, I had to learn and work hard and I, and I still work hard every day on how to, how to live clean, you know?
00:12:38.894 --> 00:12:41.684
abstaining and living clean are two different things.
00:12:41.965 --> 00:12:45.445
I fell into a church family that I absolutely love.
00:12:45.591 --> 00:12:52.592
I fell into a support system, a network of people that are living clean, that are working steps in their life.
00:12:52.715 --> 00:12:57.028
my higher power is what I rely on every day, Awesome.
00:12:57.028 --> 00:13:01.586
So the Lord had a purpose for your life, and he was there all along.
00:13:01.645 --> 00:13:03.566
He led you, he guided you.
00:13:03.725 --> 00:13:07.946
tell us about when you came to know God in a personal way.
00:13:08.140 --> 00:13:13.903
Well, I grew up with my dad always telling me about, Jesus and how much he loves me.
00:13:14.173 --> 00:13:16.873
Well, I didn't grow up in church, but I did grow up.
00:13:16.923 --> 00:13:19.263
I went to a, a private Christian school.
00:13:19.798 --> 00:13:21.238
elementary through sixth grade.
00:13:21.238 --> 00:13:23.788
So I feel like I got a pretty good foundation.
00:13:24.087 --> 00:13:43.888
but I never really understood, or I guess really accepted the fact that, that God was real until going through everything that I've been through and being able to look back and see like, I wouldn't have made it through all of these things if it wasn't for God being there, he never turned his back on me.
00:13:44.028 --> 00:13:46.738
I, I definitely turned away from him a number of times.
00:13:46.811 --> 00:13:48.520
but he never turned his back on me.
00:13:48.520 --> 00:13:51.571
He, and he always welcomed me with open arms.
00:13:51.750 --> 00:13:59.238
and I, I talk to him every day, every day I work on my relationship with him cuz he's important and, You mentioned purpose.
00:13:59.357 --> 00:14:09.711
So I, I never in my life have understood what people meant when they said that they had a calling on their life, until after graduating the program.
00:14:09.740 --> 00:14:30.735
00:14:30.851 --> 00:14:32.652
I prayed and prayed and prayed.
00:14:33.162 --> 00:14:38.682
I was working at Wade Cleaners at that time, and I just remember at their great company.
00:14:39.052 --> 00:14:39.981
they're great people.
00:14:40.292 --> 00:14:43.922
but I remember going to work every day saying, this is, this can't be it.
00:14:44.041 --> 00:14:45.510
I'm living clean now.
00:14:45.691 --> 00:14:47.581
My thinking has changed.
00:14:47.691 --> 00:14:50.370
I, I want to grow in every way.
00:14:50.880 --> 00:14:58.431
so I accepted the job at Safe House and I started as a house manager at the women's shelter that I had just left.
00:14:58.596 --> 00:15:03.433
And, I did that for a few months and then, I moved into case management and.
00:15:03.596 --> 00:15:10.105
After a couple months of that, the director position came open and they offered me the position.
00:15:10.243 --> 00:15:18.514
God has used my past and my mistakes, to put me somewhere where I have purpose every day.
00:15:18.590 --> 00:15:21.975
I get to be a part of other people getting into recovery.
00:15:22.102 --> 00:15:27.534
I work with public defenders, I work with probation, a lot of different agencies locally.
00:15:28.027 --> 00:15:34.114
getting people off the street and affording them the same opportunity that was given to me twice.
00:15:34.274 --> 00:15:37.197
And it's, it's, it's really, it's wonderful.
00:15:37.453 --> 00:15:40.303
every part of my story isn't perfect and amazing.
00:15:40.583 --> 00:15:44.039
my children still don't speak to me even though I'm three years clean.
00:15:44.159 --> 00:15:49.907
I, I call'em every other day and, and listen to silence on the phone, and that's really difficult for me.
00:15:49.957 --> 00:15:53.879
being a mother, that's your purpose from that moment on forever.
00:15:54.309 --> 00:16:05.966
That's your purpose in life, to be a mother and, I feel like God, bringing me to Safe House Ministries has given me the purpose that I was lacking because of my choices.
00:16:06.102 --> 00:16:07.682
So how old are your kids now?
00:16:08.102 --> 00:16:10.023
So my kids are 16 and 14.
00:16:10.159 --> 00:16:33.105
it is amazing and it, seems that, God has done such a work in your life that you now have the strength in him to even endure continued pain, with what you described with your kids, but, but yet you have that strength of faith, that strength of purpose, that relationship with the Lord, that even through the pain, you can keep walking the right path.
00:16:33.105 --> 00:16:34.815
Keep staying clean, keep doing.
00:16:34.919 --> 00:16:36.960
What the Lord wants you to do and helping others.
00:16:37.059 --> 00:16:38.590
that, that is really neat.
00:16:38.700 --> 00:16:47.395
it really seems like your life went from a place of knowing about God and then finding yourself in some very heavy darkness.
00:16:47.513 --> 00:16:52.663
but at some point it seems like you went from knowing about God to actually having a personal relationship.
00:16:52.840 --> 00:16:53.440
With him.
00:16:53.932 --> 00:16:54.682
Tell us about that.
00:16:54.846 --> 00:17:01.091
the hopelessness that I felt while living that way, I, I always felt like I was by myself.
00:17:01.224 --> 00:17:02.453
I always felt like I was alone.
00:17:02.453 --> 00:17:03.114
Nobody understood.
00:17:03.321 --> 00:17:13.294
it wasn't until getting into the rooms of AA and na, And working some steps that I realized I wasn't alone here on this earth.
00:17:13.426 --> 00:17:21.977
Other people are going through and have been through the same things that I'm going through and have been through, and, and they're doing amazing things in their lives.
00:17:22.054 --> 00:17:25.354
And so something is working there.
00:17:25.471 --> 00:17:28.784
Through the 12 steps, I found that relationship with God.
00:17:28.801 --> 00:17:33.791
in aa we say, you know, a higher, my higher power of, of my own understanding.
00:17:34.061 --> 00:17:36.281
And for me, that's, that's Jesus, you know?
00:17:36.409 --> 00:17:43.365
he has walked with me through everything and, I used to pray early in recovery.
00:17:43.365 --> 00:17:48.729
I used to pray that, you know, God, just gimme my kids back, you know, gimme my kids back.
00:17:48.798 --> 00:17:50.538
I want, I wanna be a mother again.
00:17:50.657 --> 00:17:58.842
through having a relationship with God and, and really trusting him with everything, it's made it a lot easier for me to.
00:17:58.900 --> 00:18:02.047
Have faith that he has a purpose for my life.
00:18:02.109 --> 00:18:07.390
And even if it's not to be a mother in this season, it, it's something else, something bigger.
00:18:07.509 --> 00:18:12.663
And he's working all of these things for his good and for mine and for other people's.
00:18:12.741 --> 00:18:15.968
my, my prayer these days is much different.
00:18:16.001 --> 00:18:17.771
I pray that God will prepare me.
00:18:17.836 --> 00:18:23.090
For when my children are ready to come back into my life, and I just keep going every day.
00:18:23.183 --> 00:18:23.423
Wow.
00:18:23.513 --> 00:18:24.923
That's, that's pretty amazing.
00:18:25.090 --> 00:18:29.824
So tell us a little more about your present role, your title within Safe House Ministries.
00:18:29.907 --> 00:18:33.231
you are one of the, the leaders in that organization.
00:18:33.281 --> 00:18:34.392
so tell us a little more about.
00:18:34.480 --> 00:18:36.069
What that looks like for you.
00:18:36.069 --> 00:18:37.509
I know you mentioned a little bit about it.
00:18:37.515 --> 00:18:37.589
Mm-hmm.
00:18:37.670 --> 00:18:38.759
But expand on that Okay.
00:18:38.759 --> 00:18:43.109
So I am the Director of Connection Services for Safe House Ministries.
00:18:43.165 --> 00:18:50.923
I supervise, all three of our shelters, the women's shelter, Grace House, the men's shelter, freedom House, and the family Shelter, Trinity House.
00:18:51.364 --> 00:18:56.253
I supervise house management, facility supervisors, and case management.
00:18:56.253 --> 00:19:00.354
I also supervise the, connections department at our day center.
00:19:00.398 --> 00:19:02.648
And the rapid rehousing case management team.
00:19:02.778 --> 00:19:12.755
I also handle the grant coordinations for our ESG funding, and that's, something that, walking into work every day, is a blessing.
00:19:12.806 --> 00:19:16.405
I get to help, like I mentioned earlier, I get to help folks get into treatment.
00:19:16.865 --> 00:19:23.233
I handle all of those coordinations as well, working with public defenders, pos, it's really, it's awesome.
00:19:23.534 --> 00:19:25.634
It's awesome to be on this side of things.
00:19:25.733 --> 00:19:31.703
I have probation officers calling my phone every day for very different reasons than before.
00:19:32.163 --> 00:19:35.044
I don't work as closely with, specific client.
00:19:35.184 --> 00:19:42.801
as I did when I was a case manager, but I do have the opportunity to, to speak to some clients sometimes when they're having a hard time.
00:19:42.872 --> 00:19:45.989
And I did that yesterday with one in particular.
00:19:46.092 --> 00:19:47.811
And it was, he was ready to leave.
00:19:48.214 --> 00:19:51.355
He was ready to leave cuz he was having a hard time with somebody else.
00:19:51.355 --> 00:19:53.875
And, I, I made time in my day to.
00:19:53.981 --> 00:20:05.814
Sit with him and, talk to him about his options, cuz I've been that person that has left and, and it didn't get me anywhere good, And, to come back into work today and to see him there was pretty awesome.
00:20:05.971 --> 00:20:06.330
Wow.
00:20:06.391 --> 00:20:07.624
So that is neat.
00:20:07.663 --> 00:20:09.034
That's really awesome.
00:20:09.182 --> 00:20:14.442
Tell us a little bit about tomorrow's hope, which is the Substance Abuse Treatment Program.
00:20:14.630 --> 00:20:26.782
I know it's an intensive outpatient program, and as you mentioned, we do have the capability with Safe House Ministries where we can offer the shelters, for individuals who would otherwise be homeless as they go through the program.
00:20:26.788 --> 00:20:26.972
Mm-hmm.
00:20:27.083 --> 00:20:35.006
But tell us about tomorrow's hope, what it meant to you, and what that process looked like and how it helps others today.
00:20:35.131 --> 00:20:35.431
Okay.
00:20:35.681 --> 00:20:43.207
so tomorrow's hope is a nine to 12 month, state licensed, CARF accredited, intensive outpatient treatment program.
00:20:43.305 --> 00:20:47.714
tomorrow's hope is gonna introduce, well, I can tell you what it did for me.
00:20:47.775 --> 00:20:54.384
Tomorrow's hope introduced me to, the 12 steps, the groups and the counselors in tomorrow's hope.
00:20:54.465 --> 00:20:58.271
Were that initial support system that I was lacking.
00:20:58.368 --> 00:21:09.808
I was able to go into group every day and talk about, the root of some of these issues and figure out that, drugs and alcohol were just a symptom of a disease, of alcoholism that I had.
00:21:09.858 --> 00:21:11.838
it helped me become really self-aware.
00:21:11.979 --> 00:21:14.739
definitely gave me the tools to work on myself every day.
00:21:14.864 --> 00:21:21.039
and the support that, that was the biggest thing for me was with not being from here and all my family in California.
00:21:21.180 --> 00:21:25.534
I didn't know where to turn and tomorrow's hope was that initial support system for me.
00:21:25.636 --> 00:21:27.317
It kind of guided me in the steps.
00:21:27.646 --> 00:21:33.763
How to work on my life and, and how to, how to get connected, how to stay connected with like-minded people.
00:21:33.882 --> 00:21:34.902
sponsorship.
00:21:34.993 --> 00:21:37.304
tomorrow's hope introduced me to a whole new way of life.
00:21:37.394 --> 00:21:45.480
So during your time with tomorrow's hope, were there times when you came close to dropping out again and running away again?
00:21:45.750 --> 00:21:47.084
And if so, what?
00:21:47.189 --> 00:21:48.118
Kept you there.
00:21:48.148 --> 00:21:53.317
what was it that helped you to not take those, temptations to fall back?
00:21:53.421 --> 00:21:53.691
Hmm.
00:21:53.787 --> 00:21:57.237
I could speak on the first time that I actually did leave.
00:21:57.386 --> 00:22:01.106
you know, once I came back that, that second time I was ready.
00:22:01.376 --> 00:22:03.176
I was sick and tired of being sick and tired.
00:22:03.226 --> 00:22:07.996
I knew that the way that I was doing things was not getting me anywhere in life.
00:22:08.086 --> 00:22:09.675
It was only worse and worse.
00:22:09.766 --> 00:22:13.215
the biggest thing that I had to learn was to take suggestions.
00:22:13.365 --> 00:22:15.435
You know, I had to move my pride out of the way.
00:22:15.441 --> 00:22:16.851
My ego, I had to.
00:22:16.961 --> 00:22:22.672
I had to realize and wake up every morning, look in the mirror and Jamie Lee, you don't know anything about living clean.
00:22:22.778 --> 00:22:28.624
So, let's get up and let's humble myself and, and take some suggestions from the program.
00:22:28.748 --> 00:22:30.268
take some suggestions from a sponsor.
00:22:30.842 --> 00:22:33.662
one thing that helped me was realizing that I wasn't by myself.
00:22:33.710 --> 00:22:34.549
I wasn't alone.
00:22:34.636 --> 00:22:39.837
the counselors in tomorrow's hope, a lot of'em have been through it, and, and are addicts and alcoholics themselves.
00:22:39.961 --> 00:22:44.411
just have to be open-minded and willing, and the program will show you the way to go.
00:22:44.718 --> 00:22:45.077
Wow.
00:22:45.167 --> 00:22:47.644
So you mentioned the word surrender.
00:22:47.673 --> 00:22:47.763
Mm-hmm.
00:22:48.003 --> 00:22:53.428
And I hear you talking about letting go of pride and embracing humility and just.
00:22:53.499 --> 00:22:54.128
Receiving.
00:22:54.278 --> 00:22:57.199
Receiving words of suggestion, receiving.
00:22:57.256 --> 00:23:03.226
Receiving the things that people said that you needed to do to make those positive changes.
00:23:03.327 --> 00:23:08.698
Someone else mentioned in a previous podcast that he felt like it was like sandpaper.
00:23:08.698 --> 00:23:15.028
It was just a painful process of, of shaving away all the things that needed, he needed to get rid of.
00:23:15.028 --> 00:23:20.261
And would you feel like that's maybe an accurate description or it it definitely can be.
00:23:20.530 --> 00:23:25.496
working with my sponsor even now to this day, life is always gonna show up.
00:23:25.540 --> 00:23:28.090
it, it's how we deal with it that matters.
00:23:28.126 --> 00:23:30.946
I don't run from my feelings or my emotions.
00:23:30.984 --> 00:23:34.134
today, I take an honest look at them.
00:23:34.231 --> 00:23:36.632
I take an honest look at my character defects.
00:23:37.021 --> 00:23:43.865
and just the same, I take an honest look at my assets, I have self-worth today, and that's, that's a big deal for me.
00:23:43.973 --> 00:23:53.607
people in the program of tomorrow's hope and people in AA and na in the rooms loved me until I loved, until I could love myself.
00:23:53.738 --> 00:23:55.028
That, that's amazing.
00:23:55.178 --> 00:24:06.540
Jimmy Lee, thank you for sharing your story, your testimony, sharing what God has done in your life, sharing your journey in Safe House Ministries and tomorrow's hope and.
00:24:06.604 --> 00:24:18.134
What an amazing, place you are in now where the Lord has just given you the opportunity to be a help to so many other people, to give hope, to give those second chances.
00:24:18.193 --> 00:24:18.374
Yeah.
00:24:18.763 --> 00:24:19.784
that is incredible.
00:24:19.874 --> 00:24:20.775
So thank you for being here.
00:24:20.784 --> 00:24:23.351
Thank you for sharing and God bless you.
00:24:23.351 --> 00:24:24.191
Thank you for having me.
00:24:24.401 --> 00:24:25.480
And your path ahead.
00:24:25.570 --> 00:24:26.050
Yeah.
00:24:26.144 --> 00:24:28.124
So, Jamie Lee, one last question.
00:24:28.194 --> 00:24:37.878
What parting words of advice would you like to give to others maybe who are struggling and, who need some changes in their lives?
00:24:38.011 --> 00:24:38.311
Hmm.
00:24:38.457 --> 00:24:40.797
I would definitely say you are not alone.
00:24:40.906 --> 00:24:42.186
You are not alone.
00:24:42.606 --> 00:24:44.106
find the rooms of na.
00:24:44.227 --> 00:24:45.426
Find the rooms of aa.
00:24:45.625 --> 00:24:46.796
find a church home.
00:24:46.913 --> 00:24:47.843
Reach out for help.
00:24:47.952 --> 00:24:48.192
There.
00:24:48.192 --> 00:24:48.913
There is hope.
00:24:49.019 --> 00:24:49.378
Awesome.
00:24:49.828 --> 00:24:50.398
There is.
00:24:50.638 --> 00:24:50.878
Thank you.
00:24:51.009 --> 00:24:51.659
You're welcome.
00:24:52.208 --> 00:24:53.528
you mind if we close that in prayer.
00:24:53.722 --> 00:24:54.472
Absolutely.
00:24:54.618 --> 00:24:55.909
Father, thank you for Jamie Lee.
00:24:55.939 --> 00:24:58.405
Thank you for what you've done in her life.
00:24:58.465 --> 00:24:59.846
Thank you for leading her.
00:24:59.923 --> 00:25:02.054
To Neil when she was in jail.
00:25:02.137 --> 00:25:14.520
Thank you for leading her to go from a place of knowing about you, to actually knowing you personally, to being able to receive Jesus as her savior, and to build that personal relationship with you.
00:25:14.770 --> 00:25:15.601
Bless her path.
00:25:15.770 --> 00:25:17.340
Guide her path, Lord.
00:25:17.915 --> 00:25:29.885
If it be your will, then I pray you might open the door for her to be able to have a relationship with her children and just to invest in them and love them, and to serve them and, and be a mother that she wants to be.
00:25:30.756 --> 00:25:36.355
Lord, thank you that you are using her to help so many people's lives.
00:25:37.685 --> 00:25:46.746
Father, she's able to help others who are mothers, others who are fathers, others who, who need help.
00:25:47.385 --> 00:25:48.496
Bless her in that path.
00:25:49.096 --> 00:25:54.016
Just continue to grow her as a person and her influence and her leadership.
00:25:54.346 --> 00:26:02.205
Protect her from any traps that life may bring her way and just bless the future for her life.
00:26:02.205 --> 00:26:03.256
I pray in Jesus' name.
00:26:03.645 --> 00:26:03.976
Amen.
00:26:04.246 --> 00:26:04.786
