ABOUT THIS EPISODE
“Now I want you two to kiss. Come on, now, never let the sun go down on an argument.”
This week, we dive into the twisted, scandalous, and endlessly unpredictable world of Wild Things (1998) — John McNaughton’s provocative neo-noir thriller that blends mystery, crime, dark comedy, erotic intrigue, and one of the most infamous plot twists of the 1990s. With its tangled web of deception, double-crosses, hidden motives, and shifting alliances, Wild Things remains one of those movies where absolutely nothing is what it seems.
Directed by John McNaughton, the filmmaker behind Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, Wild Things follows wealthy high school student Kelly Van Ryan (Denise Richards), who accuses her guidance counselor Sam Lombardo (Matt Dillon) of sexual assault. When fellow student Suzie Toller (Neve Campbell) makes a similar accusation, the scandal quickly explodes into a complicated criminal investigation involving money, power, sex, and manipulation. Detective Ray Duquette (Kevin Bacon) begins digging into the case, but as more secrets come to light, the truth becomes increasingly difficult to separate from an elaborate con.
Featuring memorable performances from Matt Dillon, Neve Campbell, Denise Richards, Kevin Bacon, Theresa Russell, Robert Downey Sr., and Bill Murray, Wild Things is packed with characters who are constantly manipulating one another — and the audience. The film's Florida setting, provocative atmosphere, sharp dialogue, unexpected humor, and famously complicated plot helped make it a defining example of late-1990s erotic thrillers and neo-noir cinema.
In this episode, we break down Wild Things from beginning to end, including its infamous twists, elaborate schemes, unreliable characters, and constantly shifting power dynamics. We discuss John McNaughton’s direction, the chemistry between the cast, the movie’s unusual balance of erotic thriller, crime mystery, and dark comedy, and the way the screenplay repeatedly challenges the audience to reconsider what they think they know.
We also explore the film’s themes of greed, manipulation, class, sexuality, revenge, deception, corruption, and the lengths people will go to get what they want. How does Wild Things manage to keep its audience guessing? Which characters are actually in control? How many layers of deception can one movie possibly contain? And why does the film’s reputation continue to endure more than two decades after its release?
Whether you're a fan of Wild Things, 1990s movies, erotic thrillers, neo-noir films, crime mysteries, twist endings, John McNaughton movies, Kevin Bacon films, Matt Dillon movies, Neve Campbell, Denise Richards, dark comedies, mystery movies, cult classics, or detailed movie analysis — this episode is for you.
