00:00:36.079 --> 00:00:36.799
Is that a good description?
00:00:37.119 --> 00:00:37.520
I guess so.
00:00:37.679 --> 00:00:38.079
Hey, Mr.
00:00:38.159 --> 00:00:40.560
Stran Smith, thanks for joining us today.
00:00:40.880 --> 00:00:44.000
Or really letting me join you and uh here in Childress.
00:00:44.399 --> 00:00:46.960
Well, you made it you made it pretty hassle-free for me.
00:00:47.039 --> 00:00:48.320
So yeah, well, it worked.
00:00:48.479 --> 00:00:49.600
Got to deliver some bulls today.
00:00:49.840 --> 00:00:50.159
Absolutely.
00:00:50.320 --> 00:00:51.520
You bet right on the way through.
00:00:51.759 --> 00:00:52.399
Yeah, it was.
00:00:52.479 --> 00:00:57.520
And uh Riley traveling with us today as well, and we got uh we got to deliver bulls.
00:00:57.759 --> 00:01:02.960
Um well we actually haven't had a podcast in a minute since we were right there at the bull sale.
00:01:03.039 --> 00:01:03.520
Uh yeah.
00:01:03.759 --> 00:01:07.439
Been been a little tough, but uh had a great bull sale.
00:01:07.519 --> 00:01:09.120
Thanks for everyone who came out to that.
00:01:09.200 --> 00:01:15.840
And uh I made my day whenever uh listeners would say, like, hey, uh listen to the podcast.
00:01:16.000 --> 00:01:16.319
Thanks.
00:01:16.400 --> 00:01:17.680
That was that was really fun.
00:01:17.760 --> 00:01:19.840
Um but thanks to all those that came out to the sale.
00:01:19.920 --> 00:01:20.319
It was great.
00:01:20.480 --> 00:01:34.159
Next sale is gonna be March, that's the second Wednesday of March, and we're gonna have a really cool event that we're calling the Iron Horse, and it is gonna be a combination of some really cool events going down the fence, heading, healing, calf roping.
00:01:34.480 --> 00:01:35.280
It's gonna be cool.
00:01:35.519 --> 00:01:36.719
Sweet, it's gonna be cool.
00:01:36.879 --> 00:01:41.120
25 contestants, and just something we really want to make special.
00:01:41.519 --> 00:01:44.239
But uh poor sale along with that and a bull sale.
00:01:44.480 --> 00:01:46.159
Anyway, now to the important stuff.
00:01:46.319 --> 00:01:49.920
Um Strand, thanks for letting us come in here to your store.
00:01:50.079 --> 00:01:51.359
1930 Remnant.
00:01:51.439 --> 00:01:51.680
Yes.
00:01:51.840 --> 00:01:57.439
Uh you said, and and we'll talk about the the name of that too in STS and what you're doing, what you're doing now.
00:01:57.599 --> 00:01:59.680
But um where where did you grow up at?
00:01:59.840 --> 00:02:00.560
I grew up right here.
00:02:00.799 --> 00:02:01.040
Did you?
00:02:01.120 --> 00:02:02.959
Yeah, I was born and raised right here in Childress.
00:02:03.200 --> 00:02:04.319
So you got to come back home.
00:02:04.560 --> 00:02:05.519
Got to come back home.
00:02:05.599 --> 00:02:10.240
You know, when I was a kid, I couldn't wait to get out of this place.
00:02:10.479 --> 00:02:16.639
You know, I'd be I'd be out there at that ranch and I'm like, oh my gosh, I can't wait till I get to town.
00:02:16.719 --> 00:02:20.080
And I got to town, and I was like, I want to can't wait to get out of this town.
00:02:20.960 --> 00:02:27.759
And uh it seemed like the longer I rodeoed, the more the more I was gone, the more I wanted to come home.
00:02:28.080 --> 00:02:37.439
You know, and so it was uh it's crazy when when I was finally was over with for me after about 20 years, I was uh I was ready to come back home.
00:02:37.759 --> 00:02:46.960
But you didn't uh from what I understand, maybe rodeo wasn't your first choice as a junior high kid.
00:02:47.360 --> 00:02:49.439
I didn't really start roping until I was 16.
00:02:49.599 --> 00:02:54.800
I was I uh I was gonna play basketball and then I was maybe gonna play football.
00:02:54.960 --> 00:02:57.199
I didn't really care, I just wanted to compete at something.
00:02:57.280 --> 00:02:58.319
I wanted to keep score.
00:02:58.400 --> 00:03:22.639
Always, I didn't care if it was shooting marbles, playing dodgeball, let's keep score, you know, and and uh so whenever I I I I went to a uh a roping when I was about 15 and I'd always just like ranch kids, I mean I I was I was riding a horse, you know, two days when I was two days old, my granddad put me on a horse and rode in the parade with me.
00:03:22.800 --> 00:03:23.120
Nice.
00:03:23.280 --> 00:03:34.080
And so I've been on a horse my whole life and you know knew how to rope, knew how to rope the dummy, and you know, just didn't do it, you know, just didn't do it much.
00:03:34.159 --> 00:03:36.000
And you know, sure didn't rodeo at all.
00:03:36.080 --> 00:03:36.240
Yeah.
00:03:36.319 --> 00:03:38.719
We went to one rodeo a year, and that's in Roaring Springs.
00:03:38.800 --> 00:03:47.360
That's the big rodeo, and they had a breakaway when I was a kid and and had a uh little uh 19 and under tie down, and that was my one rodeo.
00:03:47.520 --> 00:03:52.639
So uh, but 16, I was like, you know what, I I might can do this.
00:03:52.800 --> 00:04:12.960
And so I still played football and basketball here when I was going to school, and but I'd get up at about 4:30 or 5, my junior and senior year practice, you know, till 7:30 or so, and and uh then I'd go to go to school and then practice after school for whatever sport we were playing.
00:04:13.039 --> 00:04:16.560
Yep, and then I'd go to the rodeos on the weekend, high school rodeos.
00:04:16.720 --> 00:04:19.839
So that that was kind of that that's kind of how I got started.
00:04:20.399 --> 00:04:21.199
Oh, dang.
00:04:21.360 --> 00:04:23.519
So uh I mean your dad was calf open too.
00:04:23.680 --> 00:04:27.439
Yeah, you know, dad was dad, dad, I was the last of five.
00:04:27.759 --> 00:04:31.920
And so, uh and I'm uh I'm nine years between me and my closest sibling.
00:04:32.000 --> 00:04:34.959
So I was I really had like six parents, really.
00:04:35.439 --> 00:04:41.279
And uh so for for me, dad had his career was already come to an end.
00:04:41.360 --> 00:04:45.519
And but he was he didn't he made the finals in '60 and I think '62.
00:04:45.600 --> 00:04:49.519
He's the first guy to make the finals in the national finals and get off the ride.
00:04:49.680 --> 00:04:51.600
So that was I did not know that.
00:04:51.839 --> 00:04:52.480
Yeah, yeah.
00:04:52.639 --> 00:04:54.560
And so I always had heard that story.
00:04:54.879 --> 00:04:59.759
So here's what you you can appreciate this because you've you've probably done some stuff like this.
00:04:59.920 --> 00:05:02.879
I never met anybody that's actually done this yet.
00:05:03.120 --> 00:05:08.959
So, but I had a big horse, good ranch horse that they used to let me ride when I was little.
00:05:09.439 --> 00:05:17.279
And if I got off away from everybody, you know, I'd kick him into a lope and I'd just get off of him off the right as he's loping.
00:05:17.360 --> 00:05:17.439
Yeah.
00:05:17.600 --> 00:05:21.439
Well, that wouldn't got to be where that wasn't quite wild enough for me after a little bit.
00:05:21.600 --> 00:05:24.000
And so then I he wouldn't run off, he'd just stand there.
00:05:24.079 --> 00:05:29.759
So I'd he got to I got to where I can almost seven eighths cocked and be able to step off.
00:05:29.920 --> 00:05:33.759
Well, that got to be where I didn't, you know, I got where I didn't take dirt.
00:05:34.000 --> 00:05:36.000
And so then that wasn't fun enough.
00:05:36.160 --> 00:05:42.000
So I'd get him to where he would jump a mesquite, and in the middle of jumping the mesquite, then I would get off the right.
00:05:42.319 --> 00:05:49.920
And so that kind of came back to haunt me because I could actually really get off before I threw my rope.
00:05:50.000 --> 00:05:50.399
Why?
00:05:50.560 --> 00:05:51.920
It was it was so crazy.
00:05:52.079 --> 00:05:56.079
I got, you know, and so uh we took the getting off the right deal.
00:05:56.160 --> 00:05:58.000
I guess I probably took it a little bit too far.
00:05:58.079 --> 00:06:02.240
I got off a little too fast sometimes back then back when I first started.
00:06:02.399 --> 00:06:03.759
So holy cow.
00:06:04.000 --> 00:06:06.079
I didn't realize he was the first one to get off on the right.
00:06:06.240 --> 00:06:08.639
I mean, what a game-changing deal.
00:06:09.199 --> 00:06:28.480
It was he we talk about it in the book, you know, and being humble and laughing at yourself, and you know, and he they were interviewing him at the national finals one year, and they're this they the big deal about the getting off the right, changing him, you know, that he changed the way roping was done and all this kind of stuff.
00:06:28.639 --> 00:06:33.439
And he said, they said, well, Clifton said, you know, why did you get off the right?
00:06:33.680 --> 00:06:41.759
And he said, Well, it was it was faster, you know, and he said, they said, well, why did why did no one get off the right before that?
00:06:41.920 --> 00:06:48.160
And he's he said, well, they said it would ruin your horse when you if you got off the right, because make them duck, you know.
00:06:48.480 --> 00:06:50.800
And he said, they said, well, well then why did you do it?
00:06:50.959 --> 00:06:53.680
He said, Oh, my horse wasn't much count anyhow.
00:06:54.000 --> 00:06:55.279
So I was like, there you go.
00:06:55.360 --> 00:06:56.720
That's as my dad.
00:06:56.800 --> 00:06:58.720
Instead of him going, yeah, I changed everything.
00:06:58.800 --> 00:07:02.720
He's like, Nah, I just doing it because I didn't have much to lose anyway.
00:07:03.199 --> 00:07:12.000
So uh, but it was uh it was a it was a it was a neat deal, but you know, through the years to be able to, you know, kind of try to live up to that.
00:07:12.240 --> 00:07:12.959
Yeah, yeah.
00:07:13.199 --> 00:07:26.319
Well that I I think it's cool that um because there's there's a lot of guys that uh their parents were successful and they and they want their kids to be successful too and maybe push that dream on them a little bit, but it doesn't sound like your dad did that to you.
00:07:26.639 --> 00:07:27.519
Absolutely not.
00:07:27.600 --> 00:07:33.199
He he I I we had I had access to to good good ranch horses.
00:07:33.360 --> 00:07:37.199
They weren't they I mean you could go you could go do anything you wanted to do on them.
00:07:37.279 --> 00:07:40.079
You could actually, that's what I rodeoed on was just a ranch horse.
00:07:40.160 --> 00:07:48.000
I didn't I didn't know what a skid boot was or an over-each boot or nothing until I got to college and see all these, you know, these these big time horses and everything.
00:07:48.079 --> 00:07:57.360
I'm just riding an old ranch horse, you know, that uh, you know, we didn't we didn't boot up and didn't have the fancy stuff, didn't have fancy trailers, you know, or stuff like that.
00:07:57.600 --> 00:08:19.839
But uh so it for me it was it was uh he I had access to that stuff, but he never once told me that I needed to practice or if I want you know no, if I wanted to do it, go pin the calves, go saddle the horses, and then get a buddy to come turn calves out for me, and that was kind of the AI roped.
00:08:19.920 --> 00:08:20.319
Yeah.
00:08:20.480 --> 00:08:24.079
My mom would get up with me in the morning before school and turn calves out for me.
00:08:24.160 --> 00:08:31.680
So that was, you know, that we they was always there to support me, just like they would, but never, never did they ever push me to do it.
00:08:31.920 --> 00:08:32.879
Never forced it on you.
00:08:33.200 --> 00:08:34.000
No, you know.
00:08:34.399 --> 00:08:35.600
So what was that?
00:08:36.399 --> 00:08:46.000
Do you remember a time where it was like um was it the Roaring Springs Rodeo that you won and felt I don't know, felt the wind that you were like, oh, maybe I do want to do this.
00:08:46.240 --> 00:08:58.000
Yeah, I you know, I I I guess probably whenever I I realized whenever I was I wasn't gonna probably be a real successful basketball player.
00:08:58.159 --> 00:09:02.080
You know, I really didn't have a future like I wasn't gonna get a play in the NBA.
00:09:02.159 --> 00:09:16.559
Yeah, you know, I I I'm or football, I wasn't quite big enough, you know, and and so and it and it just seemed like I had some success early, you know early, and and I I kind of fell in love with it.
00:09:16.639 --> 00:09:32.080
Yeah, you know, and and and I'm like, you know, I might could get where I could do this, you know, and so that's that's it, I it just kind of it seems like I just kind of that that that that road just kind of opened up for me.
00:09:32.399 --> 00:09:44.960
And that was kind of the way, you know, and I started getting some college offers to come college rodeo, and it it just those doors were opening, and I was trying to keep my eyes open and had a lot of prayer about that.
00:09:45.039 --> 00:09:49.759
You know, it was I I wasn't I was trying to be intentional of what is it?
00:09:49.840 --> 00:09:51.200
What are you saying to me in this?
00:09:51.360 --> 00:10:02.080
You know, even as at a 16, 17, 18-year-old punk kid, I was still trying to seek the face of the father and really know what he was wanting me and what he had for me.
00:10:02.159 --> 00:10:08.960
And I man, I I I cried out to him on that stuff right there because I was like, you know, I I I want to get this right.
00:10:09.360 --> 00:10:13.840
And and and it seemed like that, it just it just everything went that way.
00:10:14.000 --> 00:10:14.399
Yeah.
00:10:14.639 --> 00:10:17.200
Did you ever have anything that gave you doubt on that?
00:10:17.440 --> 00:10:18.799
Oh, every day.
00:10:19.440 --> 00:10:22.960
You know, it it was uh it was uh, you know, it's one of those things.
00:10:23.200 --> 00:10:26.320
Rodeo is a hard, hard way to make an easy living, you know.
00:10:27.039 --> 00:10:34.799
It's like uh it's I I really I I fell in love with roping is what I did.
00:10:34.960 --> 00:10:42.639
That I feel like that that was probably the I I loved, I actually love the the grind, yeah, and I love to practice.
00:10:42.799 --> 00:10:43.759
I love to tie.
00:10:44.000 --> 00:10:45.279
I love to flank and tie.
00:10:45.360 --> 00:10:47.120
I loved I loved every part about that.
00:10:47.279 --> 00:10:55.759
I love the part that that you want when you when you really want, you know, the part that kind of sucked, that's the part that I really liked.
00:10:56.159 --> 00:11:03.840
And so I'm like, I didn't know if there was something wrong with me or if this was really something that was gonna maybe have some success at.
00:11:04.159 --> 00:11:11.360
And I remember it was probably I'd made the finals two or three times.
00:11:12.879 --> 00:11:19.759
And my dad finally kind of was like, you know, this deal might work for you.
00:11:19.919 --> 00:11:28.480
You know, it is at my mom, I I'd call home and I remember and I was amateur and I was going to college, amateur, and trying to, you know, and I I didn't just kill them.
00:11:28.559 --> 00:11:35.600
I wasn't just kicking the lung out of everybody whenever I went to college, you know, and uh I didn't make the finals till 95.
00:11:35.759 --> 00:11:38.000
I but I I wanted to finish school first.
00:11:38.159 --> 00:11:41.360
I want to graduate from college before I got my card.
00:11:41.679 --> 00:11:47.679
But I was I I had some success, but I didn't just, I wasn't winning everywhere I went.
00:11:47.759 --> 00:11:52.000
And everybody's just like, oh, this is gonna be the next greatest thing that's ever happened here.
00:11:52.879 --> 00:11:55.360
I didn't feel like I was, I felt like I was behind.
00:11:55.840 --> 00:11:57.120
I didn't start till I was 16.
00:11:57.200 --> 00:11:58.559
I'm like, you're behind, man.
00:11:58.879 --> 00:12:01.279
You better, you better double up to catch up here.
00:12:01.519 --> 00:12:07.279
And I would call home and my mom would say, now honey, you just keep your eyes open.
00:12:07.519 --> 00:12:09.519
God might have something else for you.
00:12:10.159 --> 00:12:22.799
And I never never said this out loud to her, but in every time in my mind, I I I know exactly because I can still hear her saying it, and I'd be, I'll be dang.
00:12:23.360 --> 00:12:25.440
I I'm this is gonna work for me.
00:12:25.759 --> 00:12:27.200
Because I got no plan B.
00:12:27.440 --> 00:12:30.240
I I didn't have a I didn't have another.
00:12:30.399 --> 00:12:35.919
I had when I decided that's what I was gonna do, I absolutely had no plan B.
00:12:36.159 --> 00:12:36.639
All then.
00:12:36.799 --> 00:12:37.200
Yep.
00:12:37.440 --> 00:12:37.840
All then.
00:12:38.320 --> 00:12:42.559
Uh but you still played football, basketball while you're while you were roping.
00:12:42.879 --> 00:12:43.600
Oh yeah, oh yeah.
00:12:43.679 --> 00:12:52.000
When I wasn't here here in Childress, man, they would have, you know, they would have hung me from the small towns kind of feathered me here if I didn't play football, you know.
00:12:52.879 --> 00:12:57.919
That's like you and you're like uh they kick you out of town if you don't play football here.
00:12:58.240 --> 00:13:01.120
I always like to to heckle Wesley Thorpe.
00:13:01.200 --> 00:13:07.759
He I remember going into high school and um he had already won his first truck that he couldn't drive yet.
00:13:08.080 --> 00:13:14.080
Oh then he uh he quit sports, he quit football, quit basketball, went full-time roping.
00:13:14.159 --> 00:13:16.799
And I remember being telling him, being like, why would you do that?
00:13:16.879 --> 00:13:18.559
Like, what's rodeo gonna do for you?
00:13:18.799 --> 00:13:21.919
And here he is with three gold buckles or whatever.
00:13:22.080 --> 00:13:24.240
So I after he won his third one, I remember seeing him.
00:13:24.320 --> 00:13:27.759
I'm like, dude, I need to apologize for what I said when I was 14 to you.
00:13:28.960 --> 00:13:29.360
Yeah.
00:13:29.600 --> 00:13:32.320
But I think that's that's that's neat that you still did.
00:13:32.399 --> 00:13:35.919
Oh, I mean, the small towns always need everybody to do everything.
00:13:36.159 --> 00:13:36.559
That's right.
00:13:36.639 --> 00:13:37.200
That's right.
00:13:37.360 --> 00:13:37.840
Yeah.
00:13:38.080 --> 00:13:39.840
But it it I I find that neat.
00:13:39.919 --> 00:13:41.120
Where did you end up going to college?
00:13:41.360 --> 00:13:44.480
I went to Vernon for a couple of years and then I graduated from WT.
00:13:44.720 --> 00:13:44.960
Okay.
00:13:45.120 --> 00:13:45.360
Yeah.
00:13:45.600 --> 00:13:46.159
Pretty close to home.
00:13:46.320 --> 00:13:47.600
Yeah, stayed pretty close to home.
00:13:47.679 --> 00:13:53.279
I practiced I made it where I could, you know, dad always, that was one thing he always kept for me.
00:13:53.440 --> 00:13:54.879
He always kept practice kids.
00:13:55.279 --> 00:13:58.480
So in and if I needed 30, we had 30.
00:13:58.559 --> 00:13:58.799
Yeah.
00:13:58.960 --> 00:14:02.960
So I would practice at the college, I'd come home and practice.
00:14:03.120 --> 00:14:10.159
I'd practice at at Rick Kyle's house, I'd practice at Sid Meyer's house, I I practice at Randall Graf's house.
00:14:10.240 --> 00:14:23.440
I had I had paid people in places everywhere that I went and roped uh that that would would let me rope and and uh you know so I would rope as much as I possibly could.
00:14:25.519 --> 00:14:27.279
The repetition is incredible.
00:14:27.600 --> 00:14:35.120
And I feel like especially in calf roping, that it is in in roping in general, that so much of it is the the muscle memory.
00:14:35.440 --> 00:14:36.799
You can say that in any sport, right?
00:14:36.879 --> 00:14:39.600
But I don't know the the tying of calf roping.
00:14:39.679 --> 00:14:43.039
I mean I'm scared to ask how many you think you've tied down.
00:14:43.919 --> 00:14:44.399
I don't know.
00:14:44.480 --> 00:14:52.000
I used to I used to for me a successful day in the practice pen was if I if I burned a brand new string up.
00:14:52.240 --> 00:15:04.159
So if I started off with a brand new string that day, and if I if I wore it out, if had it fuzzed up so bad that I really didn't want to use it the next day, then that was kind of that was a successful day.
00:15:04.320 --> 00:15:16.240
Now I'm not gonna say I I roped and tied this many calves down, but somewhere around 250 runs with a pig and string, it kind of got to the spot where it was fuzzy that I didn't really like it.
00:15:16.399 --> 00:15:20.399
So my was my goal every day was to burn a string up.
00:15:20.639 --> 00:15:21.279
That's wild.
00:15:21.440 --> 00:15:24.480
So I'd I would tie, you know, and I tied a lot.
00:15:24.720 --> 00:15:31.679
I was that was when I started roping, I could not tie a calf without making a mistake.
00:15:31.919 --> 00:15:36.559
And I I because I was trying to go fast, and everybody used to say, slow down, slow down, slow down.
00:15:36.639 --> 00:15:37.840
I'm like, I'll be dang.
00:15:38.080 --> 00:15:42.720
I'm not I'm gonna get, I'm gonna keep tying fast and I'm gonna get where I don't make a mistake.
00:15:42.960 --> 00:15:45.519
And if I do, then I won't never have to speed up.
00:15:45.840 --> 00:15:48.240
So it was kind of I was hard-headed.
00:15:48.320 --> 00:15:53.360
I was a punk kid that was I'm not gonna say I was the most coachable kid in the world, you know.
00:15:53.440 --> 00:15:56.639
I was it and I think there's a certain amount of that that you need.
00:15:56.799 --> 00:16:07.200
You need to be hard-headed, you need to be pretty you know, strong-willed and and uh pretty thick skinned and or or or you'll get ate alive out there trying to rodeo.
00:16:07.840 --> 00:16:10.080
Especially if you're a young guy, you know.
00:16:10.320 --> 00:16:20.080
And anyway, that's and it used to be because there was some old there was some old lines in our bunch, and there was some young ones too that were way, way, way ahead of me.
00:16:20.240 --> 00:16:27.200
I were so much out of my league, you know, but I had something, I had I had a mark to be able to see that I needed to get to.
00:16:27.440 --> 00:16:28.080
Yeah.
00:16:28.879 --> 00:16:36.960
Has anything I mean your dad being the first one to step off the right, I feel like that changed the changed the game quite a bit at the NFR.
00:16:37.120 --> 00:16:44.399
And was there has there chang been anything changed since you were going to the NFR those years?
00:16:44.559 --> 00:16:46.399
Has anything changed since then to now?
00:16:46.720 --> 00:16:57.200
Yeah, I think that they've you know they've tried you know, everything in my era, it it kind of turned from from roping bigger calves.
00:16:57.440 --> 00:17:06.240
Uh when I first made the finals in '95, we were we still roped not b as big as that as big as they were in the 70s and or sixties for sure.
00:17:06.319 --> 00:17:06.480
Yeah.
00:17:06.720 --> 00:17:10.559
You know, but uh but we still roped larger calves.
00:17:10.640 --> 00:17:13.119
You know, they were they were bigger framed calves.
00:17:13.680 --> 00:17:17.359
They might not have weighed a whole lot more, but they were a lot older.
00:17:17.599 --> 00:17:22.319
And so uh but but they started wanting to tie calves faster.
00:17:22.559 --> 00:17:34.319
They wanted the the shorter scores, quicker setups, top-loaded rodeos, you know, you had your Houston for 50,000, your Calgary, you know, and it was top-loaded.
00:17:34.400 --> 00:17:37.519
So it's it was really kind of setting you up to go to for first.
00:17:37.680 --> 00:17:45.119
They started the tour finales, and it was, you know, they bring the top four guys back, and first would win double what second one.
00:17:45.440 --> 00:17:56.160
And it was, it was really, they were trying to set it up more of a spectator sport to where you could really get in behind it and say, you know, they go for first, go for broke.
00:17:56.240 --> 00:17:56.559
Yeah.
00:17:56.960 --> 00:18:16.240
And uh so I think that that that helped evolve calf roping into, you know, calves started getting a little bit, hopefully they were getting better because we were preparing them better, they was tying them, trying to get them to where they would would take the tie, where it wasn't wasn't as much of a drawing contest.
00:18:16.400 --> 00:18:20.960
And then it wasn't a wrestling match where you could really show your skill set off.
00:18:21.279 --> 00:18:35.279
And then it's since then, it's since I've kind of quit, what it it looks like to me is is calves have got smaller and smaller, younger and younger, you know, and not younger necessarily, just smaller framed, you know, just for the faster times.
00:18:35.359 --> 00:18:41.759
You can't, it's hard to tie a 240 pounder in six, you know, and that's what they're wanting now.
00:18:41.839 --> 00:18:43.839
They want to see these six-second runs.
00:18:44.000 --> 00:18:48.960
And that doesn't happen on you know bigger, stouter calves very often.
00:18:49.599 --> 00:18:55.519
And uh, I think that that's one one thing that these these younger guys have done is been able to do.
00:18:55.839 --> 00:19:00.400
You know, the guys have kind of got more tried to get more athletic.
00:19:00.640 --> 00:19:04.000
You know, it's it's not just you know, they're trying to get in the gym.
00:19:04.319 --> 00:19:14.480
You know, I I I kind of in in the middle of my career on because of injuries, I had to I had to learn how to quit practicing and go to the gym.
00:19:14.559 --> 00:19:17.039
I built a gym in my house, at my house.
00:19:17.359 --> 00:19:21.839
And it wasn't a gym where you go in there and do the curls for the girls.
00:19:21.920 --> 00:19:45.680
Everything was quick twitch, it was uh high rep, low weight, uh core, core strength, uh lots of uh ligament tendon strengthening, uh just a lot of things that were kind of outside the box, more flexibility uh and and really making athletic moves instead of building a big muscle.
00:19:46.160 --> 00:19:48.079
We were trying to make an athletic muscle.
00:19:48.720 --> 00:20:02.559
And so and it it came back to where for me I went from whenever I had one surger one one injury, I went from weighing 210 to down to 170.
00:20:02.799 --> 00:20:05.119
When I won the world, I weighed 173.
00:20:05.680 --> 00:20:06.000
Wow.
00:20:06.160 --> 00:20:16.799
I was about five per six bive, maybe six percent body fat and just it it was I was almost too lean, but I was stronger than I'd ever been.
00:20:16.960 --> 00:20:20.079
I was stronger than I am now, you know, and I weighed 170 pounds.
00:20:20.480 --> 00:20:27.920
But I I think we calculated kind of and it was we we say it and and it might not be but it was pretty close to it.
00:20:28.319 --> 00:20:34.799
I think in the in that whole year, I think I had ate less than a hundred grams of sugar that entire year.
00:20:35.599 --> 00:20:37.359
I was gonna ask if diet was a big part of that.
00:20:37.599 --> 00:20:38.079
Sounds like it.
00:20:38.400 --> 00:20:43.680
It's it was it was I ate like a horse as far as I ate the same thing.
00:20:44.000 --> 00:20:55.759
I ate I either ate a steak, grilled chicken, or grilled fish, I ate a sweet potato, uh boiled eggs without the yolk, uh refried beans.
00:20:56.160 --> 00:20:59.119
Um that's kind of it.
00:21:00.960 --> 00:21:04.079
I didn't really it my you know I we did box meals.
00:21:04.160 --> 00:21:11.599
Jennifer, we had a we had a bus, and of course Jennifer was doing the rodeo uh sideline reporting.
00:21:11.759 --> 00:21:16.160
So for me it was great because we had the boys and we had a bus.
00:21:16.400 --> 00:21:17.839
We had a full kitchen right there.
00:21:18.000 --> 00:21:19.519
She did we had meal prep.
00:21:20.559 --> 00:21:34.319
You know, I ate egg whites and and uh re-fried beans for breakfast, onions, and uh for lunch it was a box meal, supper is a box meal, for midnight snack was a box meal.
00:21:34.480 --> 00:21:40.880
We just I eat pro I drink protein shakes like they were like they were like they were coffee.
00:21:41.039 --> 00:21:42.720
You know, it was it was crazy.
00:21:42.880 --> 00:21:48.559
So but we've tried to sk we we tried to implement that into a a lifestyle change for us.
00:21:48.720 --> 00:21:52.799
We still Jennifer still cooks extremely healthy, clean.
00:21:53.599 --> 00:21:59.519
And we've tried to I'm not near as strict now as I used to be, but but uh uh for sure.
00:22:00.160 --> 00:22:02.480
back then that was a that was a huge part of it for me.
00:22:03.039 --> 00:22:05.039
And you're see you think there's more of that now?
00:22:05.279 --> 00:22:05.519
Yeah.
00:22:05.680 --> 00:22:08.799
I think I think that that's you know guys are taking it more serious.
00:22:09.039 --> 00:22:10.640
You know, they're trying to get in the gym.
00:22:10.720 --> 00:22:26.400
They're trying to hire trainers to help them to be able to to to to uh you know not just practice in the arena but practice in the gym too and and really become more flexible uh and and and be more athletic.
00:22:27.839 --> 00:22:37.920
Here's one thing that I think is a huge deal in our industry that I see really in the last 10 years, really five for sure the horses.
00:22:38.240 --> 00:23:05.680
The horses at this point we always when I started to get a really really good bred horse he had to be a reject from another discipline now they're actually breeding horses to rope on that never that that really wasn't a the case back then you you found a horse that was you know kind of a freak he was just one of those that was a really good horse.
00:23:07.119 --> 00:24:06.480
Really genetics might have played into it probably didn't play that big of a role now they're breeding these horses not just to be great horses or cow horses cutting horses they're breeding the reiners they're breeding this horses now to where they're great where they're bred for roping roping horses and that's that's the thing I see now more than ever more than it's ever been you know now that being said there's not a whole lot of them that are unloading them out of a half top trailer when they're three and long trotting around you know 20 miles that day they go straight to the arena and they don't have to they're they're good their mind is good enough but really to have a horse that's really broke for me I want him to be able to take him out there the roughs and be able to sure go use him.
00:24:06.640 --> 00:24:20.480
I I there was only two horses I had the bay mare she was older when I got her and then Topper of course was 20 when I got him 21 actually those are the only two horses that I didn't take to the ranch and use on the ranch.
00:24:20.640 --> 00:24:32.319
Wow just because they had already Topper was with his age he already started to have some issues and the bay mare she was she was same thing she I didn't I didn't feel like she needed the miles.
00:24:33.039 --> 00:24:42.559
And you we you've kind of mentioned it a little bit already but there's been a lot of adversity through your through your career and horses being one of them lost a good horse.
00:24:42.799 --> 00:24:59.759
Yeah I lost Topper whenever he was uh when he was twenty five and then well he's 25 well I had just I had just one second at Austin and I couldn't even get my rope up above my arm my head to swing it and I had just one second at Austin three days prior to that.
00:24:59.839 --> 00:25:02.000
Yeah coming back from a shoulder injury.
00:25:02.319 --> 00:25:09.119
That was that was after surgery yeah right after surgery and that I finally got cleared the rope and I took him to Austin.
00:25:09.200 --> 00:25:29.519
I I knew he was my my uh he was my Michael Jordan I mean he was the Michael Jordan of of of calf rope and horses uh not because I owned him he just he did he was just that good you know and you got him when he was 21 I bought him when he was 21 yeah paid more money for him than I paid for any horse and I did it when he was 21 years old.
00:25:29.680 --> 00:26:30.400
I had just had a stroke so and they didn't even know if I was going to be cleared to rope rodeo anymore rope and I was I had had experimental heart surgery and and the only person that didn't think I was crazy was my wife and and I'm pretty sure she thought I she knew I was crazy so she she whenever she'd I had passed up on buying him when he was eight years old I passed up on buying him when he was 19 and then she said you know you've always wanted Topper you've always won good on him uh you've always wanted him buy him buy him I'm like all right so I did I bought him and I had him for f four years and and uh he uh he was he was pretty special he did something for me that you know he he probably brought me back if I wouldn't have if I don't think if I'd have I'd have I couldn't have I wouldn't have had him I don't know if I'd have came back from the whole you know from the whole stroke deal.
00:26:30.640 --> 00:26:32.480
Yeah because you were 32.
00:26:32.720 --> 00:26:50.160
Yeah 32 32 and and it was it it was i I mean uh you know it's one of those things that we're with lots of unknowns you know experimental heart surgery doesn't sound like it's that big a deal unless it's your heart that they're experimenting on.
00:26:50.240 --> 00:27:29.440
Oh yeah you know and so um uh we whenever I did whenever I did have the surgery and basically got my career back that's when I decided to buy him and let's you you know let's see see if we can you know make an you know I'd been rodeoing at that time for eight years professionally you know and so uh I bought him and and that he kind of he spurred me on to really kind of come back and how long were you out from that and there was a ho you had a hole in your heart or something.
00:27:29.680 --> 00:27:45.599
Yeah it it's it's called a PFO Peyton for Remino Valley is what it's called and it's basically the two chambers of your heart are are not separated and uh and a blood clot slipped through that spot and went to my brain and caused a stroke.
00:27:45.920 --> 00:28:04.160
So uh they went in and kind of put like a cowboy I always say it's kind of like patching a tire they put a patch in there and closed the two chambers up and and uh once it once my heart accepted it and flap closed back over everything was good and no no problem since then.
00:28:04.319 --> 00:30:01.359
Wow so but it was a at the time it was still not FDA approved we had to get special approval and and it was you know it's at at that time in my life Jennifer we had been married a couple of years but Jennifer was pregnant with our first son oh my and so I'm just like man it was uh you know through that little that little stretch of time right there it was uh lots of unknowns and lots of prayers lots of and roping had has uh had always been my outlet you know I'd go practice I'd go rope I'd go rope the dummy no no roping and during that time you know I was on blood thinners and and uh really if without the surgery my career was over doctors sat across the table from me and said son your your career's over and uh he said the good news is we can put you on medication and you can live the rest of your life he said but you're gonna have to get a different occupation different job and change the way you live you know and I'm like uh no more riding horses no more ranching no more you know you you need to sit behind a desk and and really not mow the grass kind of a deal and that's when we really Jennifer main one went to work on trying to figure out what's the other options so we find this place in Boston that was doing this experimental surgery and and uh that's what we elected to do not just for a cur my career but more for my health than anything because I'm pretty reckless you know I would say I could probably you know with on blood thinners I could probably I might could you know bleed to death going to Walmart and pushing a a grocery basket around you know because anyway that's that then so it it everything worked out you know to to be able to come back and and and get to have some I've had I've had been fortunate to have some really good horses and and uh had a got to have a long career after that even.
00:30:01.599 --> 00:30:06.559
Yeah yeah and it was uh how many years did you wrote professionally?
00:30:06.880 --> 00:30:15.279
I started in in uh 94 went back to school and graduated in 95 and made the finals in 95.
00:30:15.519 --> 00:30:21.599
So 94 to really the last time I went to Houston was in 2018.
00:30:22.240 --> 00:30:47.839
So uh that was that was kind of the that was that was really whenever I I had I had quit we we did the ERA I think in I think it was in 15 2015 when we had the ERA and I had I had had during a during the wreck they think I had broke my neck back in nine in the 90s and it had got to this point to where I couldn't function anymore.
00:30:48.079 --> 00:31:08.960
So Trevor wanted me to go with him to to to Tijuana to the Mexico clinic and do uh stem cell uh injections he had been down there once and he said you gotta go he said you got to try it and so I did I went down there and we we we actually went I think I think I ended up going six or seven times.
00:31:09.039 --> 00:31:26.079
So that got me through the the ERA year right there and and uh I rodeoed just to bigger events 17 and 18 and but 18 was the last year so yeah so 24 years.
00:31:26.720 --> 00:34:36.000
Yeah that's a lot of roping yeah a lot of roping lot lots of runs lots of runs but uh you you talked about the wreck that was your second year pro rodeoing yeah and uh got in a bad wreck yeah it Sean McMullen and I were uh it was you know it's my second year I'd made the finals in 95 and shoot we were both in a top ten in 96 and this is in August and we was going from one rodeo to the next we were at uh Canby Oregon headed to Hepner Oregon and uh I got in the trailer because we was gonna not get in there until three or four o'clock in the morning and Sean got in the front seat with a with a we had a young man driving for us from Australia and uh anyway we we got hit by a drunk driver uh about three o'clock in the morning and uh it was you know it killed Sean instantly and it you know for for me it was probably the hardest thing I've ever been through you know I w I came home we went to to his funeral I left his funeral I left the graveside service drove to my house we got back to the house at we got back to the house at uh I think about 5 30 or 6 o'clock the sun was starting to come up I loaded my truck and trailer and my horse and took off and drove to uh to Bremerton Washington straight by myself I hadn't been asleep since we had the wreck came home they had the funeral a day later day and a half later I go home load up and take off and drive to Bremerton Bremerton Washington it's five days four days five days I hadn't been asleep just drove straight up there I was numb um just in shock and everybody you know everybody said you know you got a rodeo for Sean you got to do it for his family for your family you got to do for the rodeo community and and I was actually just a mobile therapist everybody that saw me came and told me their Sean story they literally would cry on my shoulder and I never shed a tear I would just it's good it's good he's you know and I I was I had all the I said all the right things and I think I went to 30 rodeos after that I didn't win a dime I went from the top 10 dropped out of the top 15 I ended up at San Francisco didn't make the finals that year and I was I was dying on the inside man I was in the deepest darkest black hole of a depression I I had never even imagined that you could be there.
00:34:36.320 --> 00:35:20.239
And uh I went to a Christian retreat uh called the walk to emails and I finally I I was laid down everything literally laid it down at the foot of the cross and said you know what God you said you'll take this and you'll take you you I'm not I can't handle this anymore you know four or five months later after the wreck six months later nearly and uh it wasn't I d I didn't instantly just hop up and everything was fine but it started the healing process for me.
00:35:20.400 --> 00:35:27.199
You know of ironically that night that I did that was the night of the first go round at the national finals.
00:35:27.760 --> 00:36:28.800
It's you know is I had a uh an older gentleman that had been trying to get me to go on this walk to a Mayus it's a Christian retreat what it is and he'd been trying to get me to go and had signed me up on every walk that he that I you know every one of these retreats he'd sign me up and and I something would come up I'd be up at a rodeo or I'd you know I couldn't make it and he's like when it's time you'll go when it's time he did uh I told his son the other day in the store here I told him that story and he's like I did not know and he was just so persistent and it was that walk that actually when I went to that retreat and I was able to lay that down and to really it started the healing process for me to where I can remember I can talk about Sean now and I remember the good times and I I know how proud he would have been and how how much of he he literally was one of those guys that would literally give this shirt off your back.
00:36:28.880 --> 00:39:32.400
He's and he here's the deal we didn't start glorifying Sean after he died he was we knew everybody was he was that close of a friend to s lots of guys lots of guys it was were very close to him and uh he's because he was just he just had that much fun and so anyway wait you 97 really was critical for me you know that they they they did the Trent did the uh the 6'8 documentary well that was in 97 that was the next year well that next year was a big year in my career because I had been 95 first year I rodeo full time I go to the finals I place in seven out of the 10 rounds of the finals my first year 96 back in the top 10 I'm rolling again right then the wreck happens I don't make the finals I go through this dark depression I'm lost my best friend and my life you know I I'm thinking my career's kind of over with because the last thing I want to do is get back in that truck and take off driving it's it's the I it it's a and I had done it when I didn't want to do it and and now I'm like you know what I'm done I'm done and I thought no I'm I'm I'm I'm not done 97 starts a rolls around I win the first day money at Fort Worth set the arena record I first won a tie one and seven in Fort Worth I come back and I win San Antonio I tied I won the first round I won second in the second round I win the short round I win the average I back in the box at Lake Charles Louisiana I think is a two header I've been just and I've run I think I won the first round there back in there and I'm fixing to run my second calf and I'm just sitting there in the box and I start laughing and I like my pig I had to ride up and put the string back in my mouth because it dropped down I'm laughing Marty Becker's rodeoing with me he's like after so I run the calf out there rope him by figure eight a front leg turn him around time and eight win the rodeo he's he comes over there and he says what were you laughing about I said this is so easy this is so easy I said it's funny I'm just laughing because this is so easy you know and it was I was rolling so much and that was the year me and Cody went to the finals he went and he I think he is about$500 in front of me but we were like we were 30 or 4000 I think we and at that time 30 or 4000 ahead was like three go rounds you know so I didn't have a very good finals that year but that's the year they tied them all so fast you know but uh I figured out at that year at the finals I'm like okay I got to go home and I got to learn how to rope at the finals.
00:39:32.880 --> 00:39:44.000
I was old school you know we ran them out there and I I could tie Kevs in eight I could tie Kevs in seven too but but but really I didn't tie very many because I didn't try to get it on them real fast.
00:39:44.159 --> 00:40:09.440
I'd run them another swing maybe two and depend on I would I would rely on me being on the ground my speed on the ground I'm like Cody's getting it on them three seconds two seconds before me I better be really fast if I think I'm ever going to beat these guys you know they're getting it on them real fast so I come home and started trying to evolve my way of roping where I could get it on one fast.
00:40:09.519 --> 00:40:34.239
So wow that was that was that was kind of that's kind of you know I've kind of gone back and forth on on my career but that was you know it was uh it was it was good it was good I enjoyed it did uh did that year did that wreck change any perspective of how you rodeoed or any any other perspective that you had?
00:40:34.559 --> 00:41:12.400
Yeah you know it just made me appreciate the the life that I got to live and uh really it brought back a it made it into me where I I didn't take things for granted as much you know and and and it seems like with every one of the injuries and setbacks that I had through the years you know whether it be a shoulder whether it was my pelvis whether it's the stroke whether it's what all those things the setbacks it they always made me appreciate what I was getting to do.
00:41:12.559 --> 00:41:30.559
You know a a bad day rodeoing is better than a great day in an office someplace you know and and so I always I I just was so appreciative and I loved I I never I never quit loving to rope I still love to rope right now.
00:41:30.800 --> 00:41:36.559
In fact I every time we're when we tag calves I tag out in a two section pasture.
00:41:36.800 --> 00:41:56.159
So I there might be they might get to be a couple of days old before I get to them and it's rough and it's the canyons and the roughs and the br I don't bring them up I get when you can't you can't get to them on a four-wheeler you can't get to them in a pickup you got to ride a horse and I stick it around every one of them's neck and I tie them down.
00:41:56.239 --> 00:42:01.519
And so get off on the right side well I don't get off the right anymore.
00:42:02.559 --> 00:42:17.679
Yeah that's uh I can still they said somebody asked me they said you still rope I said well I hadn't forgot how to cuss if I miss so there you go oh that's funny that um but you did you went to the NFR 11 times?
00:42:17.920 --> 00:42:31.679
11 times yeah did it ever because you made it to the finals first year 95 went eleven times but it wasn't until oh eight yeah that you won.
00:42:31.840 --> 00:42:39.519
Did it did uh I feel like I the last this makes me remember um Rory McElroy the golfer and how he just couldn't win the Masters.
00:42:39.599 --> 00:42:42.400
Yeah just couldn't win the Masters and that's all anybody ever talked about.
00:42:42.480 --> 00:42:42.639
Yeah.
00:42:42.880 --> 00:43:36.800
Was that ever did did that event ever happen to you of like oh yeah you know I'd be I'd be lying if I said that you know that uh if that didn't uh I'm not gonna say it haunted me and it was it it wasn't it was I was I never got into the into the big deal of the hype deal of it was me against somebody else I we well we're not boxing you know we we we're not wrestling we're not arm wrestling here it's not it's me roping my calf on my horse so I it was never against people I appreciated still to this day I still do I I can watch guys rope and I I I'm a fan of roping I know what it takes to have done and do what they they they do and what it took to get there.
00:43:36.960 --> 00:43:38.239
So I'm a fan of it.
00:43:38.400 --> 00:43:50.239
I watched the roping and appreciated the roping now I'm not gonna say I was if I was sitting over there winning the go round that I was rooting for the next 14 guys to beat me but I still could appreciate it.
00:43:50.480 --> 00:44:02.239
And so you know I I don't know the deal that happened in for me and in in happening in So late in my career in 08.
00:44:03.599 --> 00:44:03.920
Ah.
00:44:06.000 --> 00:44:13.599
Yeah, I don't, I don't I I I I think that it was I I I I had come to the spot to where I was good.
00:44:13.840 --> 00:44:16.320
It wasn't gonna determine who I was.
00:44:16.559 --> 00:44:16.719
Sure.
00:44:16.960 --> 00:44:18.239
It wasn't gonna be it.
00:44:18.400 --> 00:44:21.039
That's that's what I did, not who I was.
00:44:21.119 --> 00:44:21.280
Yeah.
00:44:21.440 --> 00:44:28.079
And so it wasn't my identity, the the best guy that ever wrote to to not win a gold buckle.
00:44:28.400 --> 00:44:29.840
I was like, I that so what?
00:44:29.920 --> 00:44:30.960
I I don't care about that.
00:44:31.039 --> 00:44:44.159
Yeah, that's not that wasn't what it is about, you know, and so um I I I was I had come to the the to the determin I I I had kind of come to conclusion is I'm good.
00:44:44.320 --> 00:44:48.159
I'm good right who I am and what I'm what I am.
00:44:48.400 --> 00:44:53.280
I don't need something to validate me as a roper.
00:44:54.079 --> 00:44:56.079
Now did I want it?
00:44:56.480 --> 00:44:57.599
Oh what?
00:44:57.840 --> 00:45:04.719
I've I I've I've yeah, these guys talk about practicing and all that.
00:45:04.880 --> 00:45:10.079
Yes, I'm I'm I've I was I lived it, you know?
00:45:10.400 --> 00:45:11.440
I lived it.
00:45:11.679 --> 00:45:17.360
And but it wasn't gonna one way or the other.
00:45:17.840 --> 00:45:28.239
And and then the way it happened, you know, I I missed a go buckle there in 04 just by just uh one place in a go-round.
00:45:28.559 --> 00:45:36.880
If one monkey could have tied a calf faster than 8.8 in the 10th go round, I have another go buckle in 04.
00:45:37.679 --> 00:45:39.519
But here's the deal.
00:45:39.840 --> 00:45:48.159
I I don't know that if I'd have won it in 04, would the 08 have deal have happened?
00:45:48.719 --> 00:45:49.119
I don't know.
00:45:49.280 --> 00:45:50.800
Maybe I'm done after that.
00:45:50.880 --> 00:46:04.079
After I have a shoulder injury and I fight back and and all of the hundred less than 100 grams of sugar, and because here's the thing that didn't just affect me, it affected my whole family.
00:46:04.159 --> 00:46:06.400
Yeah, and not just my immediate family.
00:46:06.639 --> 00:46:10.639
It went through my whole family, my entire tribe.
00:46:10.880 --> 00:46:16.719
And so I'm so glad it happened the way it happened.
00:46:16.800 --> 00:46:24.320
Yeah, but or I wouldn't have done those extreme things, maybe to have got that first one in 08.
00:46:24.639 --> 00:46:25.199
Yeah, you know.
00:46:25.599 --> 00:46:26.559
No, great point.
00:46:26.719 --> 00:46:29.440
And uh this is it made me think of this.
00:46:29.519 --> 00:46:38.480
Um, in in today's rodeo world, Rocke Steiner went a few years with it almost getting one, finally gets one.
00:46:38.880 --> 00:46:42.079
Do you think it changes anything that he does?
00:46:42.639 --> 00:46:47.440
I don't know Rocker, but I I I can speak for me.
00:46:48.480 --> 00:46:56.079
When when I won it in 08, I had never went past oh I never went past the go buckle.
00:46:56.719 --> 00:46:58.880
My goal was not to win two.
00:46:59.519 --> 00:47:01.199
My goal was to win one.
00:47:01.679 --> 00:47:06.719
And so in 09, I didn't make the finals.
00:47:07.119 --> 00:47:11.599
I got hurt, I pulled a hamstring, and and and didn't get to go till the very end.
00:47:11.679 --> 00:47:19.280
And and and no excuse though, I had a lot of things that come up in 09, but I didn't make the finals.
00:47:20.719 --> 00:47:23.360
Now I came back in 10 and made them one more time.
00:47:24.079 --> 00:47:36.400
But for really for me, I I I think that it I I I had trouble with really refocusing.
00:47:36.559 --> 00:47:40.880
It's kind of like that deal as in at uh at Lake Charles laughing in the box.
00:47:41.039 --> 00:47:47.599
I I got to for the first time in my career in 09, I back in the box, talking to we're talking about Bob Dahlman.
00:47:47.760 --> 00:47:50.639
I back in the box and I used to not hear the announcer.
00:47:51.519 --> 00:47:54.159
I got to where I started listening to the announcer.
00:47:54.320 --> 00:48:01.039
They're talking about, and this young guy, this is the world champion, and and I'd be and I'm like, who are they talking about?
00:48:01.280 --> 00:48:02.800
And I'm like, that's me.
00:48:02.960 --> 00:48:04.159
That's me, I'm the world.
00:48:04.639 --> 00:48:07.760
I'm like, I am I'm the and I couldn't believe it.
00:48:07.840 --> 00:48:11.519
Like for like three days I didn't sleep after the finals.
00:48:11.679 --> 00:48:16.000
And I would just be laying in bed, and I'd just start laughing out loud.
00:48:16.079 --> 00:48:20.400
And Jennifer's like, go to sleep, please.
00:48:20.559 --> 00:48:21.440
And I couldn't.
00:48:21.599 --> 00:48:34.880
It was, I was so I it was it it it brought me so much joy, just the fact of I'm like, because I had been so good with not.
00:48:35.440 --> 00:48:38.880
I was so good without having to have validation.
00:48:39.039 --> 00:48:47.280
And it was to me, it was like the opportunity was presented to me, and God said, you know what?
00:48:47.679 --> 00:48:48.480
Here you go.
00:48:48.639 --> 00:48:51.199
I'm gonna, I'm gonna give you this opportunity.
00:48:51.519 --> 00:49:02.000
Now, I'd like to say that he tied that calf for me in the 10th go-round or in the ninth go-round or whatever you no, he gives he gave me, he gives us the opportunity.
00:49:03.199 --> 00:49:13.280
He he it was there, I was able to get out of the way and go do what I had prepared myself for years and years to do.
00:49:13.519 --> 00:49:22.159
And then the cards fell in my pla in my in my favor, yeah, and I got to I got to get a go buckle.
00:49:22.639 --> 00:49:23.280
That's funny.
00:49:23.360 --> 00:49:27.519
You were he had never heard them until afterwards.
00:49:27.760 --> 00:49:28.639
That cracks me up.
00:49:30.239 --> 00:49:30.880
Yeah.
00:49:31.280 --> 00:49:32.000
Hush Bob.
00:49:32.800 --> 00:49:33.679
Yeah, yeah, really.
00:49:35.199 --> 00:49:36.079
Oh, that's funny.
00:49:36.159 --> 00:49:42.320
What was uh during that time, and it may be different depending on the year, but what was your favorite rodeo to go to?
00:49:42.960 --> 00:49:46.559
For me, Calgary was my my most favorite rodeo.
00:49:46.719 --> 00:50:02.719
The only rodeo I ever got a where I would almost say that I almost got nervous was Fort Worth because I think it was such a big rodeo back in the day, you know, for my dad, my granddad, and and and uh so Fort Worth was a tough rodeo for me.
00:50:02.880 --> 00:50:04.239
I I love the buildings.
00:50:04.320 --> 00:50:18.400
I'm but just because they're in Texas and that and you know, each one of them have their own, you know, Fort Worth has hit it has that that that old, I have that connection for that's you know, with my grandparents, grant granddad and my dad.
00:50:18.559 --> 00:50:25.280
And then my dad was the first person to ever, he won a he was the first person that I think to tie calf under 11.
00:50:25.760 --> 00:50:28.239
And then I was the first person to tie one in seven.
00:50:28.400 --> 00:50:28.719
Wow.
00:50:28.960 --> 00:50:32.880
So um uh Fort Worth was big.
00:50:33.039 --> 00:50:34.960
San Antone, I love San Anton.
00:50:35.199 --> 00:50:37.679
It was it was at a special place in my heart also.
00:50:38.079 --> 00:50:44.159
That was actually the buckle that I when I won it in '97, that was year after Sean and had passed away.
00:50:44.320 --> 00:50:50.000
Uh and I won San Antone that year, and that was the buckle that Sean wore was his San Antone buckle.
00:50:50.079 --> 00:50:50.239
Wow.
00:50:50.400 --> 00:50:57.440
So I I I I didn't take the San Antone buckle off until I won, until I replaced it with a gold buckle, just for that one fact.
00:50:57.760 --> 00:50:59.119
About 10 years later.
00:50:59.360 --> 00:50:59.760
Yeah, yeah.
00:50:59.920 --> 00:51:00.079
Wow.
00:51:00.320 --> 00:51:00.800
Exactly.
00:51:01.039 --> 00:51:05.440
And then and then Houston, of course, Houston is more like my kind of rodeo.
00:51:05.599 --> 00:51:07.679
It's I always felt like it's a cowboy rodeo.
00:51:07.760 --> 00:51:10.400
You know, you gotta score them out there and you gotta go chase them down.
00:51:10.559 --> 00:51:10.880
Yeah.
00:51:11.199 --> 00:51:19.519
And I always used to joke with Cody and say, you know, they're gonna move the finals to Houston one of these days, and you're gonna be in trouble because you can't beat me on the ground.
00:51:21.360 --> 00:51:25.119
So uh, but Calgary was my favorite rodeo.
00:51:25.199 --> 00:51:25.440
Yeah.
00:51:25.679 --> 00:51:37.440
Just because of the atmosphere, or was it because it was we could go up there as a family and stay there and not have to go anyplace for five or six, maybe ten days.
00:51:37.760 --> 00:51:40.079
So a lot of times I'd stay there for both sets.
00:51:40.320 --> 00:51:44.000
I would go there, stay there, just hang out right at the bus.
00:51:44.320 --> 00:51:45.920
Kids would play right there.
00:51:46.079 --> 00:51:56.639
We had our bikes, we could go on bike rides right there, or on the around the, they have great trails, and you you rope right there in the afternoon, right back over the stalls.
00:51:56.800 --> 00:52:05.679
It was just so uh, it was the it was the what I felt like professional sport, professional rodeo should be.
00:52:06.000 --> 00:52:14.559
Go someplace and you stay there for a week and you rope for a lot of money, and you have your, you know, you're able to actually do appearances.
00:52:14.719 --> 00:52:22.079
Didn't I didn't mind going doing doing appearances and autographs, whatever they wanted to do, go around different businesses and whatnot.
00:52:22.320 --> 00:52:25.840
But it was that that was the reason I loved it so much.
00:52:26.079 --> 00:52:31.760
Doesn't uh is it Pendleton or is it uh doesn't Pendleton have a long run too?
00:52:32.000 --> 00:52:34.719
Yeah, Pendleton, Pendleton, you come down the alley, you know.
00:52:34.960 --> 00:52:37.840
The crazy thing about Pendleton though, you're on grass.
00:52:37.920 --> 00:52:41.679
Yeah, you know, and if anybody should love the rope on grass, it'd be me, right?
00:52:41.760 --> 00:52:46.480
Because we're out there in the in the roughs, you know, you're you're you've been out there your whole life.
00:52:47.119 --> 00:52:54.000
I was never a big fan of Pendleton because I I like I played football on grass, your rope on dirt, you know.
00:52:54.079 --> 00:53:06.639
I got I got I got all every dime I can beg, borrow, and steal, invested in horses, and I won't ride one of them at Pendleton, you know, and so it was for me, they say it's a cowboy rodeo.
00:53:06.719 --> 00:53:09.119
I'm like, no, you come with me, I'll show you what cowboys do.
00:53:09.199 --> 00:53:26.000
You know, that's and this ain't you know anyway, that that was just kind of uh I loved I love Cheyenne, I love Salinas, Reno, those that all those rodeos, outdoor rodeos was big for me just because you had to run them out there, but Calgary's still my favorite.
00:53:26.159 --> 00:53:26.320
Yeah.
00:53:26.400 --> 00:53:28.239
I mean it's Cheyenne for the first time this year.
00:53:28.400 --> 00:53:28.559
Really?
00:53:28.800 --> 00:53:29.679
I got to go with my dad.
00:53:29.760 --> 00:53:30.000
Yeah.
00:53:30.159 --> 00:53:31.440
And that was that was really cool.
00:53:31.599 --> 00:53:32.320
Yeah, it's cool.
00:53:32.400 --> 00:53:33.920
It's a cool they do a good job.
00:53:34.079 --> 00:53:34.480
They do.
00:53:34.639 --> 00:53:38.880
And it was like 83 degrees, and they had the misters going.
00:53:39.039 --> 00:53:39.360
Yeah.
00:53:40.400 --> 00:53:42.239
Yeah, everybody's just dying up there.
00:53:42.480 --> 00:53:44.320
And uh I come home, you know.
00:53:44.400 --> 00:53:46.639
It this summer was obviously brutal.
00:53:46.800 --> 00:53:50.400
Yeah, and so we go up there and it's 83, and I was like, oh my goodness is amazing.
00:53:50.880 --> 00:53:54.880
We got a windbreaker on just about, just about.
00:53:55.519 --> 00:54:09.840
Did uh when you were traveling to all these rodeos, going with your family, did it I uh that seems like such a unique experience that maybe not everybody gets to do it that way.
00:54:10.000 --> 00:54:13.280
I mean, like with your wife working at the rodeos too, I bet that had to be interesting.
00:54:13.519 --> 00:54:16.639
It was I I f I really felt like I got to cheat the system.
00:54:17.039 --> 00:54:21.760
But for us, I'm we didn't get married until I was 30.
00:54:22.239 --> 00:54:24.400
Jennifer was 28, I was 30.
00:54:24.559 --> 00:54:27.840
So we were already pretty set and on our career path.
00:54:28.079 --> 00:54:39.119
She was already doing, she had already been working for the PRCA and for the uh uh ESPN and and different different uh stations.
00:54:39.280 --> 00:54:41.519
She had a she is she was a news anchor.
00:54:41.760 --> 00:54:44.960
So she was already on her career path.
00:54:45.360 --> 00:54:51.760
I'd already been that made the finals four times, five times by the time, four times, the time we got married.
00:54:52.320 --> 00:55:01.280
So I'm I kind of had a couple of uh non-negotiables that I made.
00:55:02.400 --> 00:55:04.559
Not necessarily like we wrote them down.
00:55:05.199 --> 00:55:08.559
The number one thing was we said we would never use the D word.
00:55:08.880 --> 00:55:11.360
That was never that was never gonna be an option.
00:55:12.480 --> 00:55:15.519
And the other thing, we were gonna do everything together.
00:55:16.320 --> 00:55:17.599
We still do everything together.
00:55:17.760 --> 00:55:23.760
We're we in this business, STS, she's she's the our our handbag designer.
00:55:24.079 --> 00:55:31.760
She she we we we when we uh go meet with factories, we we meet together with them.
00:55:32.159 --> 00:55:36.800
Uh whenever we travel, whenever I go speak someplace, she goes with me.
00:55:37.039 --> 00:55:42.079
We whenever we if I can talk her into it, and she's so busy nowadays it's hard for me to do it.
00:55:42.239 --> 00:55:45.440
I I saddle my best horse and she goes in tags with me.
00:55:45.599 --> 00:55:56.320
So it's air and we we've we've always I've I've felt like that for us, for me, my priority was uh us to be together.
00:55:57.440 --> 00:56:30.079
And uh that's been that has been uh probably the greatest joy, you know, because we we have been able to you know, both of our boys have gone on and played college sports, uh and we travel to games and Sayla's now a sophomore and we we're chasing her around too and with her cross country and singing career and and so but but we are 90% of the things we do, we do together.
00:56:30.400 --> 00:56:30.960
That's cool.
00:56:31.119 --> 00:56:33.119
Yeah got to cheat the system.
00:56:33.440 --> 00:56:38.320
Cheat the system because we had a bus and and the boys she homeschooled the boys.
00:56:38.559 --> 00:56:43.599
And we we we we went to we'd get to a rodeo, we pop the pop-outs out, man.
00:56:43.679 --> 00:57:01.280
We were playing football in there, wrestling WWF, and I had I took a horse for them usually, maybe sometimes two, and they we, you know, we were just every day was an adventure, you know, on the road, and and uh I could look over my shoulder and see them back there, you know, traveling, traveling to rodeo.
00:57:01.360 --> 00:57:15.280
The thing that's the hardest thing that there was about rodeo and sport, I was I was at home in that bus, you know, and I had my family right there, and I'm like, how you, you know, this is easy.
00:57:15.440 --> 00:57:17.119
This is this is easy, exactly.
00:57:17.199 --> 00:57:21.679
Um like and I'd I'd say that I I'd kind of I would run that through my head, you know.
00:57:21.760 --> 00:57:24.320
I'm like, how these guys gonna beat me?
00:57:27.360 --> 00:57:30.480
But it was uh it was it was so much fun, you know.
00:57:30.719 --> 00:57:35.599
Did you ever have a moment or what was your I've made it moment?
00:57:37.760 --> 00:57:42.239
So 2009, I mean Jackson, Mississippi.
00:57:42.400 --> 00:57:44.320
Jackson is in February.
00:57:45.760 --> 00:57:47.920
So I've just won the world.
00:57:48.159 --> 00:57:53.199
I've kind of got past listening to the announcer on the in right.
00:57:53.280 --> 00:57:54.880
I've already been to Fort Worth.
00:57:55.039 --> 00:57:58.239
And I'd placed, I'd been winning a little bit already.
00:57:59.199 --> 00:58:01.360
I look up in the stands and I had the middle.
00:58:01.760 --> 00:58:06.239
And in the in in the rodeo world, if you get the middle, that means you get to run both of them in the slack.
00:58:06.480 --> 00:58:06.719
Okay.
00:58:07.039 --> 00:58:15.039
Jackson was one of those rodeos, if you didn't get the middle, you either turned out or you had to make two trips, and you didn't want to have to make two trips to Jackson, Mississippi in the winter.
00:58:15.519 --> 00:58:19.920
So I had the middle, one of only about eight or nine guys that got both of them that morning.
00:58:20.079 --> 00:58:21.280
I got to run both of them.
00:58:21.920 --> 00:58:30.800
I'm I'm sitting there, and I I at that time I was, you know, you you had you had bad days and you had good days.
00:58:30.960 --> 00:58:32.639
I had a I was having a good day.
00:58:32.719 --> 00:58:36.000
I wasn't no, I didn't have to have any pain medicine that morning.
00:58:36.159 --> 00:58:37.599
My body felt pretty good.
00:58:37.760 --> 00:58:39.199
It was warm inside.
00:58:39.599 --> 00:58:49.119
I look up in the stands, and there's Jennifer up there, her normal bubbly self, visiting, talking to the boys are over there, they're playing, not fighting.
00:58:50.239 --> 00:58:53.760
I look down, I'm sitting on this Bay Mare that I've just won the world on it.
00:58:53.920 --> 00:58:55.360
There's not a hair out of place on her.
00:58:55.440 --> 00:58:59.920
I'm telling you, if I could have got her in my house after we got home from the final, she would have lived in the house.
00:59:00.159 --> 00:59:01.920
But the barn was probably pretty good.
00:59:02.000 --> 00:59:03.920
I had two or three blankets, hoods.
00:59:04.079 --> 00:59:08.400
You she had the there was I'm telling you, she didn't have a hair out of place.
00:59:09.840 --> 00:59:11.840
I got a really good calf drawn.
00:59:12.239 --> 00:59:19.599
I crack the top of my can, I get the top rope out, I swing it one time, I'm like, oh, I'm not even gonna feel my second rope.
00:59:19.920 --> 00:59:21.119
This one feels so good.
00:59:21.280 --> 00:59:23.920
So I tie it on, I'm put my jerk line in.
00:59:24.000 --> 00:59:28.239
I'm about three away from riding in the box, and I see all of this.
00:59:28.400 --> 00:59:29.679
All that I take it all in.
00:59:30.320 --> 00:59:31.360
I'm taking it all in.
00:59:31.519 --> 00:59:34.000
I look down, I got this gold buckle on, right?
00:59:34.880 --> 00:59:37.760
And I said it under my breath.
00:59:38.079 --> 00:59:39.199
You've made it.
00:59:39.599 --> 00:59:40.960
You've made it.
00:59:42.960 --> 00:59:46.400
Less than five minutes, I'm backing in the box.
00:59:46.639 --> 00:59:59.440
I nod, I blast the barrier one, two, and I throw, I throw some kind of chaloopa and I hit this calf on the side of the head and put a wasp nest on this calf, figurates all around and got a tail and a leg and everything else.
00:59:59.519 --> 01:00:03.519
And I thought there's some chance it might come out around his neck, so I jump off.
01:00:03.760 --> 01:00:09.679
When I jump off, it snaps my rope, breaks my rope because it's figurated all at me.
01:00:09.920 --> 01:00:12.480
It wasn't because she I had him roped clean.
01:00:12.559 --> 01:00:15.039
It's it's it broke because I had it figurated.
01:00:15.440 --> 01:00:15.920
Broke.
01:00:16.079 --> 01:00:18.800
Whenever it breaks, it pops and comes back.
01:00:18.960 --> 01:00:23.920
And destiny scared the wajibis out of her, so she's running backwards.
01:00:24.000 --> 01:00:26.719
She pulls about a third of her tail out, stepping on it.
01:00:28.079 --> 01:00:32.719
I get back and she runs, she backs all the way back into the box, right?
01:00:33.119 --> 01:00:40.000
I ride and I walk in there and I get on her, pull my rope up or what's left of my rope, and get my jerk line.
01:00:40.079 --> 01:00:47.920
I'm right over there and I'm sitting on the side of the side of the chute right there, you know, next guy's roping, and I just start laughing.
01:00:48.079 --> 01:00:50.960
And I said, Yeah, you've made it.
01:00:52.239 --> 01:00:53.440
I said, There you go.
01:00:54.400 --> 01:00:58.960
I was with less than five minutes of me making it, and I realized real quick, no.
01:00:59.360 --> 01:01:04.000
Little bit of humble come on, monkey, you you still gotta throw this rope the right way.
01:01:04.239 --> 01:01:09.760
So I I that that that being said, I realized at that point I will never make it.
01:01:09.920 --> 01:01:13.679
Yeah, you know, so that's pretty funny.
01:01:13.920 --> 01:01:18.719
Did you ever get did you get to rope with some guys that you grew up looking up to?
01:01:18.960 --> 01:01:27.199
Yeah, you know, those guys that he, you know, uh, you know, in my era, uh, you know, Roy was still rodeoing.
01:01:27.519 --> 01:01:31.440
Roy was, he was, he was still he had topper, man.
01:01:31.519 --> 01:01:37.920
When he had topper, he I'm not saying Roy was as good as he ever was, but he was still had a lot of life left.
01:01:38.719 --> 01:01:43.840
In the 90s, you know, he he won the average at the finals in the 90s, you know.
01:01:44.000 --> 01:01:46.880
And uh then there was Joe.
01:01:47.039 --> 01:01:49.519
He was still, he was still right in the mix of it.
01:01:49.920 --> 01:01:54.800
Winning, you know, had I I don't know when the last world championship Joe won.
01:01:54.960 --> 01:02:04.800
And then that my herb just happened to be the where the I think probably the two greatest guys that there ever have been that rope calves came along, Cody and Fred.
01:02:05.440 --> 01:02:11.280
And uh, shoot, I'm right there in the mix of it with them, you know.
01:02:11.679 --> 01:02:30.000
So uh yeah, it was uh getting to get to rope with in the middle of all that and and to know that uh, you know, and then and then Trevor comes along and he's you know he's he's right just right behind me.
01:02:30.719 --> 01:02:34.960
And so I got to I got the you know and and then rodeo with my whole family, you know.
01:02:35.119 --> 01:02:47.840
I think the year that I made the finals, uh one year we had there was five of us there, you know, it was Trevor, was Cliff, was Tuff, and myself.
01:02:48.719 --> 01:02:58.159
And then Stetson went on to make the finals, and then Shadow made the finals, but we I didn't make it when Stetson and and Shadow made it, but I think they they were all there at the same time.
01:02:58.239 --> 01:02:59.280
So it was pretty cool.
01:02:59.440 --> 01:03:01.039
I got to rodeo with my whole family.
01:03:01.119 --> 01:03:10.159
You know, we might pull up to a rodeo and and there might be you know four of us in the calf rope and five of us that are all you know my nephews.
01:03:10.239 --> 01:03:10.559
Yeah.
01:03:10.719 --> 01:03:12.639
So it was pretty cool to get to do that.
01:03:12.800 --> 01:03:23.840
Yeah, that's that was probably the coolest part of my rodeo career was and I was the you know the elder of the bunch and kind of the uh I don't know what whatever that might mean.
01:03:23.920 --> 01:03:31.199
They kind of came to me for like I had some answers every once in a while, but you know, I I usually just like I don't know, you know.
01:03:31.760 --> 01:03:36.960
But uh it was pretty cool to be able to have them and and have that out on the road.
01:03:37.119 --> 01:03:46.239
Yeah, and get that and and and even them for my boys to be able to have them to look up to out there on the road also, you know.
01:03:46.480 --> 01:03:47.039
The whole year.
01:03:47.199 --> 01:03:48.559
Yeah, the whole year, yeah.
01:03:48.800 --> 01:03:49.599
Yeah, that's neat.
01:03:49.760 --> 01:04:00.719
I've always wondered as how the the mental game of capro of calf ropers after missing, you're on the ground if you if you jumped off.
01:04:01.119 --> 01:04:07.599
I I feel like that I don't know, quote unquote walk of shame has to be mentally tough.
01:04:07.920 --> 01:04:17.039
Yeah, yeah, it's uh it's uh it's uh you know, you usually the thing about it is you better have known.
01:04:17.119 --> 01:04:25.840
You surely you did they these guys do know because I usually whenever about the time it leaves my hand, I know whether I've caught or not.
01:04:26.159 --> 01:04:40.480
And if you're throwing that loop that you're throwing it out there and you're thinking there's a chance that it might go on even after it leaves your hand, you're a little bit luckier than what I ever was because I usually once it left my hand, I knew if I missed or not, you know.
01:04:40.800 --> 01:04:46.480
But uh when I'll tell you a quick little story about that.
01:04:46.639 --> 01:04:54.880
One year I came back at Salinas, and Salinas is 20-foot ball, a 20-foot score, and you come out of the header's box.
01:04:55.039 --> 01:04:59.119
I come back to Salinas and I'm winning Salinas by three seconds.
01:04:59.599 --> 01:05:03.440
I had I was just placed in both go rounds.
01:05:03.599 --> 01:05:06.320
I had a little horse that was just bad to the bone.
01:05:06.400 --> 01:05:12.719
His name was Piggy Bane, and uh back in there, I've I've got forever.
01:05:12.800 --> 01:05:15.840
I've got 13 or so to win Salinas.
01:05:16.719 --> 01:05:21.280
Back in there, pigs just standing there, just looking right through the bridle reins, right?
01:05:21.440 --> 01:05:24.000
I nod, calf starts.
01:05:24.159 --> 01:05:28.800
I'm I'm gonna sit, I'm gonna give him a little extra because I've got all day, just in case, you know?
01:05:29.760 --> 01:05:37.679
And when the calf gets nearly to where I want him to be, Piggy Bank just takes off.
01:05:37.920 --> 01:05:48.239
And I'm like, I reach down with both hands, and he's coming through that, and we're we're it's a long box, and I grab with both hands, and I'm like, no, I'm pulling back with both hands, and I'm like, no.
01:05:48.480 --> 01:05:52.960
I watch the barrier break as I go through it because it's across you.
01:05:53.519 --> 01:05:58.400
I'm like, oh my god, I I really the thought went through my head.
01:05:59.119 --> 01:06:06.880
I'm I I I could, he's not running so fast that I couldn't just step off the left and just let him, you want to get chased the calf?
01:06:07.039 --> 01:06:08.480
Just go chase him by yourself.
01:06:08.719 --> 01:06:11.519
That thought went through my mind as I went through the barrier.
01:06:11.679 --> 01:06:15.280
I'm like, you freaking idiot, you just cost me winning Salinas.
01:06:15.440 --> 01:06:16.719
I'd won Salinas before.
01:06:16.800 --> 01:06:19.840
I'm like, I'm I'm gonna win Salinas again, no problem, right?
01:06:20.000 --> 01:06:22.800
I think I've won Salinas twice, actually, at that time.
01:06:23.840 --> 01:06:30.960
And then it kind of hit me, I can tie this calf at eight and still win fourth, being 18.
01:06:32.239 --> 01:06:38.960
And so I just pick my rope up and I take one big swing and I'm I'm coming with it on the next swing.
01:06:39.039 --> 01:06:41.199
I'm gonna I'm gonna fix and send it out there.
01:06:41.280 --> 01:06:43.440
And and Piggy Bank is running away.
01:06:43.519 --> 01:06:53.599
He is just, and about the time I'm about right here fixing to let it go, just as he took the bits and ran through them, he stopped.
01:06:53.840 --> 01:06:55.119
Just dropped and stopped.
01:06:55.280 --> 01:06:57.039
I ain't even close to letting it go.
01:06:57.679 --> 01:07:00.559
I go over the top of his head.
01:07:03.360 --> 01:07:05.519
I hit there on my back.
01:07:05.840 --> 01:07:08.079
And he stopped, of course, and I'm on the rope.
01:07:08.239 --> 01:07:13.519
The rope went out in front of me, and I hit on the rope and I just grabbed the rope as he's running backwards.
01:07:13.599 --> 01:07:15.679
And I just grab the rope and he pulls me up.
01:07:15.760 --> 01:07:19.519
I pull so the walk of shame.
01:07:19.679 --> 01:07:25.360
I just walk back to, I just walk back to him, and I mean I'm winning the world at the time.
01:07:25.760 --> 01:07:29.440
They've done that, it's a TV rodeo, they've been doing interviews, you know.
01:07:29.519 --> 01:07:31.360
How are you, you know, what what are you gonna do?
01:07:31.440 --> 01:07:33.679
They've all but said, What are you gonna do with this buckle?
01:07:33.760 --> 01:07:35.920
You know, you won it two times, it's gonna be three.
01:07:36.000 --> 01:07:48.000
And so I just wad my rope up, I get on him, and it's it's Sunday afternoon, and the short round is just standing room only, and they've got this side gate over there.
01:07:48.239 --> 01:07:51.679
There's people 50 to 100 deep right there.
01:07:52.320 --> 01:07:55.840
Just all you where you've got to ride through everybody.
01:07:56.079 --> 01:08:02.719
The young man that's driving for me, he's standing at the gate right there, and he's holding stone.
01:08:02.880 --> 01:08:04.480
Stone's a little boy.
01:08:05.280 --> 01:08:10.960
And as I ride through, and you can imagine this horse knows he is in so much trouble.
01:08:11.440 --> 01:08:13.440
And I hadn't even pulled my rope up.
01:08:13.519 --> 01:08:16.239
I just got it wadded up, my jerk line all wadded up.
01:08:16.319 --> 01:08:19.920
And as I ride through that gate, I do just step off of him this time.
01:08:20.000 --> 01:08:35.600
I just step off of him and he's just prancing all over, and just and he's just going through these people and just hitting them and just knocking them down, knocking them out of the way, you know, and here he's going, you know, and he but he can't run off because there's 50 more people deep.
01:08:35.680 --> 01:08:38.319
Yeah, and I just step off of him, and there he goes.
01:08:38.399 --> 01:08:40.800
He's walking off, ropes dragging everything.
01:08:40.960 --> 01:08:41.760
I don't even nothing.
01:08:42.079 --> 01:08:49.199
And Kyle's standing right there, and I just reach and grab a stone from him and just turn and just walk off.
01:08:49.279 --> 01:08:52.720
And go and I go through the the crowd the other way.
01:08:52.960 --> 01:08:53.760
There goes the horse.
01:08:53.840 --> 01:08:57.279
Kyle, I'm like, he he don't say a word to me.
01:08:57.520 --> 01:09:03.840
He goes, obviously goes and gets the horse, but I just go straight to the trailer or truck, whatever we were.
01:09:04.079 --> 01:09:08.000
I think we was in the trailer of that because we wouldn't, we wouldn't, we didn't have the bus yet.
01:09:08.079 --> 01:09:10.079
I cranked the generator and turned the TV on.
01:09:10.159 --> 01:09:14.000
It's so we've got to wait till the end of the rodeo because Jennifer's work in the short round.
01:09:14.079 --> 01:09:17.760
Uh so we just lay in there, watch TV.
01:09:18.239 --> 01:09:21.439
She came in after and she's like, oh my gosh, are you okay?
01:09:21.520 --> 01:09:22.399
And I'm like, what?
01:09:25.279 --> 01:09:26.479
Uh you okay?
01:09:26.560 --> 01:09:30.720
I'm like, yeah, I just went over the top of my horse's horse's head on national TV.
01:09:30.800 --> 01:09:31.920
I'm I'm good.
01:09:32.000 --> 01:09:38.720
I'm but it's but that's the thing.
01:09:38.800 --> 01:09:40.319
I it didn't bother.
01:09:40.720 --> 01:09:44.239
Really, I'm like, you know, it it's uh it's gonna happen.
01:09:44.319 --> 01:09:49.359
You know, you're you're you better be able to laugh at yourself, you know, in those situations.
01:09:49.600 --> 01:10:02.079
But it I don't I think I went on that that m month of July, probably the best month I ever had after that, you know, just because okay, he won't do that with it.
01:10:02.239 --> 01:10:03.600
It's a bad day for him, you know.
01:10:03.760 --> 01:10:04.319
Yeah.
01:10:04.720 --> 01:10:05.600
Dang, that's good.
01:10:05.760 --> 01:10:09.199
Well the after were you ranching while you were rodeo?
01:10:09.920 --> 01:10:12.880
No, I I I I didn't.
01:10:13.039 --> 01:10:26.880
Uh I was starting to have more opportunities to, you know, sponsorships was seemed like was, you know, I I I signed with Wrangler in in uh 97.
01:10:27.199 --> 01:10:30.560
Uh I signed with Ariott in 96.
01:10:30.960 --> 01:10:37.039
Uh I was with Resist All for I've been with Resist All for nearly that long.
01:10:39.520 --> 01:10:43.760
So the sponsorship deals were really, really good for me.
01:10:44.239 --> 01:10:58.000
And and so it got me always, and they they all kind of always included me, especially Wrangler, in the in the backside business part of it, you know, the grassroots and the in the of the business.
01:10:58.159 --> 01:11:06.560
And so I I've always been uh you know I knew that sponsorships were important because that's where the real money was.
01:11:08.319 --> 01:11:32.640
So for me, I uh you know, whenever I whenever all that happened, uh I really uh tried to learn more about that, you know, and and really what I was what I was gonna do and what I was gonna do after after rodeo was over.
01:11:33.279 --> 01:12:03.279
So when the opportunity came to maybe start stepping into ranching, I came home and uh for a whole day, and I just rode around the ranch with my dad and I talked to him about you know, starting by some cows, and maybe starting and my dad talked all day long, and I I can sum up what he told me in one in one sentence because I've never forgot it.
01:12:03.680 --> 01:12:15.119
This was probably I don't know, it's probably in in the early 2000s, and this is what he said over the course of the whole day do what you do.
01:12:16.960 --> 01:12:18.560
I thought, that's right.
01:12:18.880 --> 01:12:26.880
Um I got the rest of my life to ranch, I got the less rest of my life to train horses, I got the rest of my life to whatever that might be.
01:12:27.520 --> 01:12:28.880
I'm a calf robber.
01:12:29.760 --> 01:12:35.119
And if you want to be great at something, do one thing.
01:12:35.680 --> 01:12:38.239
If you want to be good, you can do two.
01:12:38.640 --> 01:12:41.680
If you want to be average, go for three.
01:12:42.399 --> 01:12:45.680
If you want to be half-assed, do more than three.
01:12:46.159 --> 01:13:12.960
And that's where I that I that was revealed to me as plain as and and that that redirected me and my focus came back around and and instead of starting to think about all these other things out there, opportunities, I redirected and went back to the back and refocused.
01:13:13.439 --> 01:13:17.359
And really, that was probably halfway through the middle of my career.
01:13:17.439 --> 01:13:29.920
And it had how all these adversities and and all these different things that had happened to me through those things, and it it had kind of I felt like it had kind of weakened me a little bit.
01:13:30.479 --> 01:13:36.239
I was being more business minded, you know, was I?
01:13:36.399 --> 01:13:41.279
Or was I just giving myself an out and I thought, nah, go back.
01:13:41.520 --> 01:13:43.199
You know what to you know what to do.
01:13:43.520 --> 01:13:56.720
And I redirected and and through all of that and more kind of redo, you know, got redetermined, you know, to really I'm I'm gonna I'm I'm gonna be the best I can be.
01:13:56.960 --> 01:13:59.600
Is that gonna be the best there the the best?
01:14:00.319 --> 01:14:00.880
I don't know.
01:14:00.960 --> 01:14:02.399
I'm gonna be the best I can be.
01:14:02.560 --> 01:14:04.720
That's what that's the only thing I can control.
01:14:05.039 --> 01:14:18.079
And so uh I felt like that that was probably the a big turnaround, you know, because through the adversities, it was easy for me to stay, uh, you know, I got this.
01:14:18.319 --> 01:14:23.039
But it really wasn't in those adversities that I really weakened.
01:14:23.279 --> 01:14:27.680
It was through the through the business side of it.
01:14:29.039 --> 01:14:35.680
I kind of I I kind of started slipping away, refocusing on other things.
01:14:36.319 --> 01:14:39.920
That brought me back back to center and like I do one thing.
01:14:40.479 --> 01:14:42.880
You do one thing, and that's roadcast.
01:14:43.119 --> 01:14:43.279
Yeah.
01:14:44.319 --> 01:14:45.600
And then you've gotten to ranch.
01:14:46.319 --> 01:14:46.720
After that.
01:14:47.039 --> 01:14:53.840
Then after that, it's it's it was, you know, I started there towards the end, I started putting a few cows together, you know.
01:14:54.000 --> 01:14:56.720
Uh I had a great conversation with your daddy.
01:14:56.880 --> 01:14:58.720
You know, he came up and spent the day with me.
01:14:58.960 --> 01:14:59.199
Wow.
01:14:59.359 --> 01:15:04.000
And we we went around, we drove around the ranch, and he gave me a a lot of advice.
01:15:04.159 --> 01:15:27.920
Him, him and Mark probably uh that were probably my two m phona friend, biggest phona friend, kind of come tell me how stupid I am for trying to do this out here at this in the roughs, you know, and and uh they both did tell me I was stupid for the trying that, you know, and I'm like, that's just exactly what I needed to hear, you know, you can't do it.
01:15:28.000 --> 01:16:18.319
So nah, it was but they they were, they were so supportive and in helping me, you know, every time I've ever had a question, that those two guys are my two guys that I call, you know, Mark Gardner and your daddy, Donald Brown, just so you know, but I have and I've used them and it to and they've been so gracious and generous with me and patient, you know, for a just a uh you know, monkey throwing a rope and help me to be able to put a business deal together that's really it's been uh uh I'm very passionate now about about the the seed stock business of you know we talked earlier about the parallels rodeo to ranching.
01:16:18.960 --> 01:16:24.800
Well for me I didn't want to just be a commercial cow calf guy.
01:16:25.199 --> 01:16:26.640
We're in cow calf country here.
01:16:26.800 --> 01:16:28.880
We can't make it in the yearlands, it's too rough here.
01:16:29.039 --> 01:16:33.279
We're in it's it's the you can never it's this is not the right place.
01:16:34.000 --> 01:16:36.560
Uh we don't have enough wheat, we don't have all the things.
01:16:36.640 --> 01:16:39.439
This is cow calf country and it's good cow calf country.
01:16:40.560 --> 01:16:44.319
Is is it great cow calf country for registered business?
01:16:44.960 --> 01:16:45.680
I don't know.
01:16:45.840 --> 01:16:51.439
For me it is because I do the commercial side and I do the purebred side.
01:16:51.600 --> 01:16:58.239
And for me, I'm trying to raise a bull that I will turn out on my commercial cows.
01:16:58.880 --> 01:17:04.560
I don't want something that's I I can't I can't take care of a 1,500-pound cow.
01:17:04.960 --> 01:17:25.520
I gotta have a cow that's that's user-friendly, that can travel, got good good structure, good confirmation, that can that can raise me a good calf, that will do well, and when you when you sit down at the table to dine on a Hirsteer, he's the best thing you've ever put in your mouth.
01:17:25.840 --> 01:17:26.319
You know?
01:17:26.560 --> 01:17:32.960
And that's what the so the parallel of it is rodeo is a year-long process.
01:17:33.199 --> 01:17:46.159
Most of the, you know, we've we I you know a lot of guys rodeoing, they had a they started off in the winter and they're like, okay, I'm gonna try the winter deal and I'm gonna see where I'm at, and I'm gonna go through Reno.
01:17:46.319 --> 01:17:47.039
I'll get to Reno.
01:17:47.119 --> 01:17:49.920
Reno's in the first middle of June, you know.
01:17:50.079 --> 01:17:51.840
I'll get to Reno and then I'll read.
01:17:52.319 --> 01:17:53.760
No, that's wasn't the way.
01:17:53.920 --> 01:17:54.720
Never for me.
01:17:54.880 --> 01:17:56.319
There was no plan B.
01:17:56.479 --> 01:17:57.680
I'm going to the finals.
01:17:57.760 --> 01:17:59.920
I don't care if I gotta rob a bank to get there.
01:18:00.000 --> 01:18:01.359
I'm going to the finals.
01:18:01.600 --> 01:18:05.439
Unless I've got a limb that's tore off, I will be at the finals.
01:18:05.600 --> 01:18:10.239
And that was, I didn't rodeo hoping to make the finals.
01:18:10.399 --> 01:18:11.760
I'm gonna make the finals.
01:18:12.000 --> 01:18:30.079
And I I my prayer every year was in the ninth go round, because they call it the what ifs, you know, they do the what if deal and the after the ninth round, if it's over, I wanted to be mentioned and the night after the ninth round, before the tenth round, with my name was in the mix for a go buckle.
01:18:30.239 --> 01:18:31.359
That's what I prayed for.
01:18:31.520 --> 01:18:39.840
Give me that opportunity that I'm in the mix, and I was fortunate enough to be in the mix most years.
01:18:40.800 --> 01:18:47.039
So uh only won one, but but I was in the mix, and that was what I that was the opportunity I want.
01:18:47.760 --> 01:18:50.479
Ranching is a year-long process.
01:18:51.279 --> 01:18:53.840
Really, it's actually a five-year process.
01:18:54.079 --> 01:18:55.119
That's true, you know.
01:18:55.439 --> 01:19:02.880
If you really want to build what you really building, and then and then after five years, you're like, how stupid could I be that I think this was five years?
01:19:03.039 --> 01:19:05.439
This is a 15-year process, you know?
01:19:06.319 --> 01:19:10.720
So, but uh that's it, you're playing the long game.
01:19:10.800 --> 01:19:30.640
Yeah, and to be able to look out there, I've done this, I've actually told them your dad and Mark taking a picture of a cow that weighs 1150, and she's got a bull calf standing on her side that weighs 700, and I hadn't weaned him yet.
01:19:31.600 --> 01:19:43.920
And he looks like a picture of just a picture of a bull that you would love to clone, take a picture of that pair, send it to them and go, you know, this stuff really does work.
01:19:46.159 --> 01:19:51.840
You know, and you're like, yeah, these these genetics, these EPDs really do work.
01:19:52.720 --> 01:20:19.920
And if all associations or breeds were anywhere close to what the Angus Association has done, therefore if any animal, horse, cow, llama, whatever you want, a dog, if any breed did what the Angus Association had done, I I think they're the best.
01:20:20.159 --> 01:20:29.439
Not just because I'm in it, but that's the reason I'm in it, because once you started looking at everything that they trace and all of the data.
01:20:29.840 --> 01:20:30.479
That's impressive.
01:20:30.800 --> 01:20:34.880
It is so impressive and it really does work.
01:20:35.439 --> 01:20:43.119
So for me, that's that's the thing that gets me where I wake up at 4 30 in the morning and I'm like frothing at the mouth.
01:20:43.199 --> 01:20:43.840
Let's go after it.
01:20:44.079 --> 01:20:45.760
Let's go, let's get after it, you know?
01:20:46.159 --> 01:20:48.399
And and and it's the long game.
01:20:48.479 --> 01:20:54.479
Yeah, man, it's you know, it's the not the really the year, it's the five-year, 15-year plan.
01:20:54.720 --> 01:21:00.800
And to be able to build this animal that is superior.
01:21:01.119 --> 01:21:07.039
Briley and I talk about the long game quite a bit, long game and short game, and yeah, looking at decisions, and we're like, where does that fit in?
01:21:07.119 --> 01:21:07.920
Does that fit in the long game?
01:21:08.079 --> 01:21:08.880
Does that fit in the short game?
01:21:08.960 --> 01:21:17.359
Yeah, but this is a good spot, and uh, you may have said some of it, but uh this is a good spot for the unstoppable Can Am Defender side-by-side comparison.
01:21:17.439 --> 01:21:17.600
Okay.
01:21:17.760 --> 01:21:20.399
Of uh Can Am is what we use, obviously.
01:21:20.560 --> 01:21:23.119
Just like you love and the Yangus, they're the best.
01:21:23.199 --> 01:21:24.720
We love Can Ams because they're the best.
01:21:25.039 --> 01:21:27.439
Okay, because we we just want the superior product.
01:21:27.600 --> 01:21:28.000
That's right.
01:21:28.159 --> 01:21:28.479
Gosh.
01:21:28.720 --> 01:21:30.239
Yeah, we love we love the Can Ams.
01:21:30.319 --> 01:21:34.239
We just went on I went on a uh pheasant hunt with them not too long ago.
01:21:34.399 --> 01:21:38.079
My first pheasant hunt, had a cast on my arm and everything, pheasant hunting.
01:21:38.239 --> 01:21:39.600
It was uh it was really fun.
01:21:39.760 --> 01:21:47.039
Yeah, but um, yeah, how would you how would you compare the the cultures of those two of rodeo and ranching?
01:21:47.199 --> 01:21:50.640
Working with ranching cowboys, competing against rodeo cowboys.
01:21:50.800 --> 01:21:51.680
How would you compare that?
01:21:51.840 --> 01:21:56.720
I think this is the Western industry as a whole, I think is the best people in the world.
01:21:57.359 --> 01:22:04.079
I've met a lot of people in this world and from different cultures and from different backgrounds.
01:22:04.800 --> 01:22:10.159
There's nobody better than the people in the Western industry.
01:22:10.319 --> 01:22:12.960
The rodeo people, they're some of the best people in the world.
01:22:13.039 --> 01:22:15.119
They'll do anything in the world for you.
01:22:15.359 --> 01:22:20.880
We'll will you can call them and say, I'm broke down and now where I'm on my way.
01:22:21.039 --> 01:22:23.119
And then, oh by the way, where are you at?
01:22:23.439 --> 01:22:25.359
You know, kind of that kind of deal.
01:22:25.840 --> 01:22:29.279
Not just not just your buddies, but sponsors.
01:22:29.760 --> 01:22:40.239
People that are that will that will go out of their way to uh to help you in any way that they can, support you.
01:22:40.640 --> 01:22:52.079
Uh then you and then you look at it in the ranching world, man, that's the that's what the foundation of this United States was built on.
01:22:52.399 --> 01:22:54.239
You know, I I I say this all the time.
01:22:54.399 --> 01:23:01.600
Is it this hat to me, when I put this hat on, it means something to me, man.
01:23:01.840 --> 01:23:05.520
It ain't I I don't wear this thing because to keep a son off.
01:23:06.319 --> 01:23:18.880
Uh it's it's something that I I want to I want this to be here for my sons, for my grandsons, for my granddaughters, for my daughter.
01:23:19.039 --> 01:23:23.039
I want this for the generations that are coming to be able to know.
01:23:23.279 --> 01:23:41.039
I watched too many deals go down and around that ranch out there that was a handshake deal that was more money than than most people see, and not because we was making that much money, it's just because it was that was gonna be that much money trading hands.
01:23:41.600 --> 01:23:53.039
And they shook hands on it and looked at each other in the eye with respect and said, I'll be here and I'll do this, and that's my word, and that and he was like, Whoa, really?
01:23:53.600 --> 01:24:02.880
I watched my dad weigh the calves every year when he when he sent he an order buyer bought the calves from my dad.
01:24:03.680 --> 01:24:08.319
And when they sent the truck, my dad weighed the calves at our scales.
01:24:08.560 --> 01:24:10.960
We didn't have a stamp, he weighed them.
01:24:12.079 --> 01:24:14.239
Did you know the order buyer didn't even show up?
01:24:14.479 --> 01:24:15.680
He would never come.
01:24:16.560 --> 01:24:18.239
And my dad didn't know this.
01:24:20.159 --> 01:24:29.359
But he would write down we I think we could weigh about 17, 18, maybe 20 head at a time, depending on how big they were.
01:24:31.520 --> 01:24:33.039
And he'd write that down.
01:24:33.199 --> 01:24:34.479
He'd write the number down.
01:24:35.119 --> 01:24:37.840
We had a window in the scale house that I could see.
01:24:37.920 --> 01:24:41.359
I was always the monkey running the gate and run pushing them up, right?
01:24:41.520 --> 01:24:44.800
And I could see the big old scale head, right?
01:24:45.920 --> 01:24:47.680
My dad would write the number down.
01:24:48.960 --> 01:24:52.239
I would come in behind him, I could see the number.
01:24:52.479 --> 01:24:55.359
I could see the and then finally quit.
01:24:55.600 --> 01:24:59.439
You know, and it always kind of, it was in the digital, it's the old school one.
01:24:59.840 --> 01:25:03.279
It kind of bounced just a little bit, but it didn't kind of settle in.
01:25:04.560 --> 01:25:10.399
My dad, every time, was either 10 to 20 pounds light.
01:25:10.720 --> 01:25:11.600
Every time.
01:25:13.279 --> 01:25:13.920
Every time.
01:25:14.000 --> 01:25:22.159
I'd lunch that needle, and if it it he was always 20 pounds light on his end, you know?
01:25:22.479 --> 01:25:26.000
And I thought, it just burned something in my brain.
01:25:27.359 --> 01:25:28.960
That's integrity.
01:25:29.279 --> 01:25:30.159
That's integrity.
01:25:30.319 --> 01:25:31.199
That's what I want.
01:25:31.359 --> 01:25:39.119
That's what I want my kids to know that about that about me, that I would do something like that.
01:25:39.279 --> 01:25:41.199
And that's what this hat means.
01:25:41.680 --> 01:25:49.039
That's what this industry the so you ask me the people, yeah, they're the best people in the world.
01:25:49.119 --> 01:25:53.680
And I'll I'll I'll go to bat for them and for that any day of the week.
01:25:54.079 --> 01:25:54.880
That's cool.
01:25:55.600 --> 01:25:57.920
Yeah, I could tell that uh you meant that too.
01:25:58.159 --> 01:25:58.800
Yeah.
01:25:59.760 --> 01:26:00.560
You meant that.
01:26:00.960 --> 01:26:05.199
Did uh so is there anything in the industry?
01:26:05.439 --> 01:26:08.319
It's a good spot for the uh finolio boot.
01:26:08.479 --> 01:26:10.079
Finolio boots is what I like to wear.
01:26:10.159 --> 01:26:15.920
You can get a discount on their website or in their Fort Worth store using discount code Tucker Brown.
01:26:16.000 --> 01:26:16.960
I love the finolio boots.
01:26:17.039 --> 01:26:23.199
They just made me some uh elephant hide with uh white with the blue or a red RAB on it with the brand on it.
01:26:23.279 --> 01:26:23.680
I love it.
01:26:23.920 --> 01:26:26.720
Is there anything in the culture that we love?
01:26:26.880 --> 01:26:32.479
Is there anything in the culture that you'd give the boot that you might challenge to to that we could be better at?
01:26:32.720 --> 01:26:35.920
Ooh, yeah, what could we be better at?
01:26:36.319 --> 01:26:39.279
Uh that's a good question.
01:26:39.520 --> 01:26:40.880
What could we be better at?
01:26:41.039 --> 01:26:49.119
You know, speaking of the boots, I I had a sponsorship for years in a boot company, but I don't have it anymore.
01:26:49.359 --> 01:26:58.479
And so the other day I'm down in San Saba at Harry's, uh, Ken Jordan's store down there selling some bulls at the uh Jordan's.
01:26:58.720 --> 01:26:59.039
There you go.
01:26:59.199 --> 01:26:59.359
Right?
01:26:59.520 --> 01:26:59.760
Yep.
01:26:59.920 --> 01:27:03.760
And I'm like, I'm gonna go in here and look at some boots.
01:27:04.000 --> 01:27:05.760
I buy me a bear a pair of those.
01:27:06.000 --> 01:27:07.039
You did of some paleos?
01:27:07.520 --> 01:27:07.920
I did.
01:27:08.079 --> 01:27:11.600
And let me tell you something, mister, those babies are comfortable.
01:27:12.079 --> 01:27:12.319
Come on.
01:27:12.399 --> 01:27:12.720
Come on.
01:27:12.880 --> 01:27:13.039
Yeah.
01:27:13.199 --> 01:27:15.840
Um so I might be looking up that discount myself.
01:27:16.000 --> 01:27:16.640
There you go.
01:27:16.800 --> 01:27:21.119
So what would I give as a what would be something I would give the boot?
01:27:21.600 --> 01:27:33.680
You know, really what um now this is gonna this is kind of gonna could probably come back to bite me in the butt here.
01:27:33.840 --> 01:27:34.319
Uh oh.
01:27:37.840 --> 01:27:40.720
You can just say it and we'll mute it and we'll everybody will just read it.
01:27:41.119 --> 01:27:42.560
There you go, get ready, ready, ready.
01:27:45.840 --> 01:27:49.199
I really, it's a necessary evil for me.
01:27:49.840 --> 01:27:53.359
I really, and I get in trouble whenever I do this.
01:27:54.000 --> 01:27:58.720
Really, social media for me is a is really like a thorn in my side.
01:27:58.960 --> 01:27:59.680
I have fun with.
01:28:00.159 --> 01:28:01.600
It because it's a necessity.
01:28:01.760 --> 01:28:02.399
Yeah.
01:28:02.720 --> 01:28:09.439
But I really wished I didn't have to do social media for this one reason.
01:28:10.640 --> 01:28:16.319
The negativity that it how people will stir that up.
01:28:16.479 --> 01:28:28.720
And people that will get on and be the toughest suckers in the world on social media or a platform, yeah, that that's that's what I would give the boot.
01:28:28.800 --> 01:28:28.960
Yeah.
01:28:30.319 --> 01:28:30.880
Negativity on it.
01:28:31.039 --> 01:28:35.600
Yeah, that nearly not the if you could take the negativity out of it, I'm all for it.
01:28:36.079 --> 01:28:44.800
You know, you can use everything for uh if you if you if it if you just did away with that, then yes, I'm for it.
01:28:44.960 --> 01:28:54.159
But the negativity on there and the people that want to hide behind the screen and say things that that's the part I would give to Bootin.
01:28:54.399 --> 01:28:57.119
Kind of it'll uh test your tough skin, won't it?
01:28:57.439 --> 01:28:59.600
You know, I I really don't read very many comments.
01:29:00.399 --> 01:29:01.119
It's probably smart, isn't it?
01:29:01.279 --> 01:29:10.640
You know, I I really it's it it but it is and you know, and and and if even if I don't read them, uh I've got buddies that call me and say, Hey, did you see that?
01:29:10.880 --> 01:29:11.359
Oh yeah.
01:29:11.760 --> 01:29:12.479
Yeah, exactly.
01:29:12.880 --> 01:29:13.439
Oh my gosh.
01:29:14.399 --> 01:29:20.000
We were working on maybe doing a video of like reading the mean me reading the mean comments about myself.
01:29:20.159 --> 01:29:23.199
I love like I think if people learn to laugh about themselves, it makes everything.
01:29:23.600 --> 01:29:24.399
Absolutely everything.
01:29:24.720 --> 01:29:25.760
Absolutely, absolutely.
01:29:26.000 --> 01:29:37.119
And uh like when I I love it when there I remember one time uh like President Trump made fun of his own hair or something, and he's like, not having a green hair then.
01:29:38.399 --> 01:29:39.840
And I thought it was hilarious.
01:29:39.920 --> 01:29:42.479
Yeah and uh like it I was like, why did I like that so much?
01:29:42.640 --> 01:29:45.039
But whenever we make fun of ourselves, it's better.
01:29:45.119 --> 01:29:52.880
And we were we were looking through some comments and um like laughing at them, and I I think we need to work on that.
01:29:53.199 --> 01:29:54.800
Yeah, that's a good that's a good one.
01:29:54.880 --> 01:29:55.359
That's good.
01:29:55.520 --> 01:30:15.520
I I really actually don't it doesn't bother me that bad if you you know what would what bothers me is whenever it's somebody that's close to me, yeah, that you know their heart in something, and then they and somebody says something bad about them, yeah, you know, and you're like, you idiot, you don't even have a clue who this human is.
01:30:16.000 --> 01:30:23.359
You know, and uh the the golden heart that they have, that's the part that say something bad about me, please.
01:30:23.680 --> 01:30:24.079
You know?
01:30:24.239 --> 01:30:24.720
Yeah.
01:30:25.439 --> 01:30:26.239
Yeah, no no doubt.
01:30:26.880 --> 01:30:27.279
No doubt.
01:30:27.439 --> 01:30:28.000
Well that was good.
01:30:28.079 --> 01:30:30.159
Those two brought to you by Can Am and Fenelio.
01:30:30.399 --> 01:30:31.039
Those are great.
01:30:31.199 --> 01:30:54.640
Um well I've gotten to uh join in a few times on a Wednesday morning Bible study that uh and I don't know how long you've been doing it, um new to me, but a a group of men that you're in that gathers every Wednesday morning and somebody gives a word and you pray and uh that has been really cool to to be a part of.
01:30:54.800 --> 01:31:07.279
And and it seems, I mean, just as we walk up into this room, you have some notes of a Bible verse over there or uh um on on that over there as you walk in, you have the I saw the prayer tap uh what was it?
01:31:07.359 --> 01:31:08.880
Like the prayer reading the tap to pray, yeah.
01:31:08.960 --> 01:31:12.720
The tap to pray deal like it an important part of your life.
01:31:12.960 --> 01:31:19.119
Yes, yeah, uh it's you know, it's really for me, it's it's everything.
01:31:19.279 --> 01:31:21.279
It it's really everything.
01:31:21.439 --> 01:31:27.279
And then if if God is anything and we know he's everything, he's relational.
01:31:28.239 --> 01:31:29.920
And not just relational.
01:31:36.880 --> 01:31:37.840
He's all those.
01:31:38.079 --> 01:31:41.439
But more than anything, I think he wants to be relational.
01:31:41.680 --> 01:31:48.720
If he wasn't, if he didn't want us to be a family, he would have called himself something other than father, Abba.
01:31:49.279 --> 01:31:53.680
And my kids don't call me father, they call me daddy.
01:31:54.079 --> 01:31:58.000
And that's a more intimate, and that's really that's what Abba is.
01:31:58.159 --> 01:31:58.960
It's daddy.
01:31:59.119 --> 01:32:08.479
And so my faith, yes, it's it, it's it's it's it's it's actually I it's the core of who I am.
01:32:08.800 --> 01:32:10.000
It's it's everything.
01:32:10.159 --> 01:32:11.840
Without my faith, I'm nothing.
01:32:12.079 --> 01:32:16.079
And I so I I I don't want to put God number one.
01:32:16.239 --> 01:32:18.960
I want him the in the center of everything I do.
01:32:19.119 --> 01:32:28.319
And I want him in the center of my business, I want him in the center of my of my marriage, I want him in the center of my relationships, I want him in the center of roping, I want him in the center of the cattle business.
01:32:28.479 --> 01:32:32.479
All everything that I do, every every breath I take, I want him in the center of it.
01:32:32.560 --> 01:32:38.319
And I want to constantly be looking to him to what what are you saying to me in this?
01:32:38.800 --> 01:32:45.520
Because we know he works in all things for those who love him, who've been called according to his purpose.
01:32:45.760 --> 01:32:47.600
So it's like you've read that somewhere.
01:32:47.760 --> 01:32:48.159
Yeah.
01:32:49.279 --> 01:32:51.600
You know, and so what really what's what's our purpose?
01:32:51.760 --> 01:32:53.119
What is our purpose?
01:32:53.359 --> 01:33:03.039
And I'm like, well, according to Matthew, him quoting Jesus, when the Pharisees asked him, he said, you know, what's the most important commandment?
01:33:03.199 --> 01:33:10.079
And he said, Well, love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind.
01:33:10.239 --> 01:33:14.640
And he said, and then there's a close number two, and love your neighbor as you love yourself.
01:33:14.800 --> 01:33:19.439
So in cowboy terms, it's love God and love people.
01:33:20.159 --> 01:33:21.760
That's our purpose.
01:33:22.079 --> 01:33:41.520
So if we know that God's working in everything that goes on in our life for us, for his purpose, and his purpose is for us to love him and love people, then that I really can't lose as long as I am got that right.
01:33:41.600 --> 01:33:53.920
And if I get that right, and if we get that right here at the store, here in the business at STS, in the cattle business, roping, or taking the trash out, if we get that right, we're gonna be alright.
01:33:54.159 --> 01:33:58.720
And that's really what for me, that's what it's all about.
01:33:58.880 --> 01:34:03.439
It's a it's about a real relationship with the Father.
01:34:03.840 --> 01:34:13.600
Uh being kingdom-minded of where I am, when every room I walk into, I want to be the kingdom man in the room.
01:34:13.760 --> 01:34:18.079
That's got God's plan, God's purpose on my heart.
01:34:18.239 --> 01:34:39.279
And if here's the this is the thing that I've come to later on in my life is the greatest privilege of my life is that God, the creator of everything, would allow me to represent him as a son.
01:34:40.399 --> 01:34:48.960
That to me, I'm I I I've what and what do I have to brag about other than that?
01:34:49.279 --> 01:34:50.079
Nothing.
01:34:50.479 --> 01:34:52.399
So that's what it's all about for me.
01:34:52.560 --> 01:35:01.439
And for for us as a family, as a as a company, whatever that is, and that was even the strategic part of the STS.
01:35:01.600 --> 01:35:02.479
We call it STS.
01:35:02.560 --> 01:35:03.920
It's really not STS.
01:35:04.079 --> 01:35:05.840
It's S cross S.
01:35:06.319 --> 01:35:07.920
The cross is in the center.
01:35:08.159 --> 01:35:11.439
And I'm a S strand and I'm a Smith.
01:35:11.600 --> 01:35:11.920
Okay?
01:35:12.159 --> 01:35:13.520
S and on either side.
01:35:13.680 --> 01:35:19.119
And I I can relate to the two thieves on the cross.
01:35:19.279 --> 01:35:21.680
I see those two S's, and that's me.
01:35:21.920 --> 01:35:22.239
Wow.
01:35:22.399 --> 01:35:28.239
That's I'm the good thief, but I'm still a thief, and I'm still rotten at very best.
01:35:28.479 --> 01:35:32.000
And I have been and I am the bad thief.
01:35:32.720 --> 01:35:43.920
But the cross in the center, as long as I can keep looking to him, no matter which one of them I am, if I keep looking to him, everything's gonna be alright.
01:35:44.560 --> 01:35:48.319
So that was kind of the whole deal behind our logo.
01:35:48.880 --> 01:35:59.279
And then when we opened the store, we we've had we've we've had this, the STS, we've been in business since the 2011 is when we started that.
01:36:00.079 --> 01:36:11.039
And it it was uh it it when we started that business, we started off just with a few leather jackets, and then Jennifer started designing some handbags.
01:36:11.600 --> 01:36:15.039
And it's a lifestyle brand, basically, is what it was.
01:36:15.439 --> 01:36:55.439
And we when when we went and we were directing, I mean a wholesale company that we sold at different uh retailers, and it grew and grew and grew, and as years went on, we had this thought that you know we need to open a retail space kind of as a flagship store to let other retailers be able to see how Jennifer, the designer of all this stuff, she hand draws all these bags and and and everything's she's so meticulous about each design and each the placement of every zipper and every piece of fringe and and that she hand draws all even to the down to the detail of the stirape.
01:36:55.920 --> 01:37:11.680
So to be able to really represent that the way the way we feel like it needs to be, we opened a flagship store, 80% STS and 20% of different brands that we feel like complement our brand, right?
01:37:12.000 --> 01:37:16.319
And so as we're doing that, we're like, okay, so what are we gonna name it?
01:37:16.479 --> 01:37:18.079
What are we gonna name this store?
01:37:18.319 --> 01:37:30.880
Well, we we don't really want to name it STS because we're kind of that flagship store, but we really won't don't want to take away from the retailers that are in that are carrying our product, also.
01:37:31.359 --> 01:37:32.800
So let's name it something.
01:37:32.880 --> 01:37:36.319
Well, remnant has always been Jennifer's name.
01:37:36.720 --> 01:37:44.560
She's she's remnants, we're because we're all just remnants, pieces that God puts together in this beautiful tapestry of life.
01:37:44.960 --> 01:37:48.000
Well, I knew that that remnant was her name.
01:37:48.159 --> 01:37:52.960
Um that that was her her her kind of go-to name, remnant ranch.
01:37:53.199 --> 01:37:58.000
So I'm reading in 2 Kings 1930.
01:37:58.880 --> 01:38:02.720
My granddad started the ranch in 1930.
01:38:03.760 --> 01:38:14.560
In 2 Kings 1930, it says, a remnant will return home, put down roots, and rise up and flourish once again.
01:38:16.399 --> 01:38:17.680
I started crying.
01:38:17.760 --> 01:38:19.520
I'm like, are you kidding me?
01:38:19.680 --> 01:38:20.479
Are you kidding me?
01:38:20.960 --> 01:38:23.359
I come in and she's like, What's going on?
01:38:23.520 --> 01:38:26.640
I'm like, the store's name's 1930 remnant.
01:38:26.720 --> 01:38:29.039
She's like, okay, I like it.
01:38:29.199 --> 01:38:30.560
What's where'd you what?
01:38:30.720 --> 01:38:37.680
And I read her 2 Kings 1930, and she's like, Oh my goodness, are you kidding me?
01:38:37.840 --> 01:38:44.319
So if you look at the 1930, the nine and the three, in the middle, there's an S.
01:38:44.560 --> 01:38:45.199
Yeah.
01:38:45.680 --> 01:38:49.760
The ranch, when my granddad started it, was lazy S Ranch.
01:38:50.079 --> 01:38:50.800
I'll be dang.
01:38:51.279 --> 01:38:52.239
I didn't know it was an S.
01:38:52.319 --> 01:38:53.680
I knew there was something there.
01:38:53.840 --> 01:38:54.800
Yeah, it's an S.
01:38:54.880 --> 01:38:59.119
It's a lazy S connecting the top of the nine and the bottom of the three.
01:38:59.520 --> 01:39:03.439
So anyway, with all of that, that's kind of how everything ties together.
01:39:03.760 --> 01:39:06.720
1930 remnant and uh STS.
01:39:07.039 --> 01:39:07.520
Wow.
01:39:08.159 --> 01:39:09.600
That is that is neat.
01:39:09.760 --> 01:39:10.000
Yeah.
01:39:10.159 --> 01:39:15.600
And uh as I as I open it up here on the on the faith part, I was like, oh no, I forgot to talk about STS.
01:39:15.840 --> 01:39:16.479
I gotta go back to it.
01:39:16.800 --> 01:39:18.960
You just brought it right back home, baby.
01:39:19.279 --> 01:39:20.880
You just brought it right back home.
01:39:21.119 --> 01:39:22.880
That is that is that's cool.
01:39:22.960 --> 01:39:29.840
And you started um um I'm gonna forget what it's called, the the church gathering at the NFR.
01:39:30.000 --> 01:39:31.439
Oh yeah, yes, yeah.
01:39:31.680 --> 01:39:33.199
Uh Elevation Sunday.
01:39:33.279 --> 01:39:35.920
We started that back at when I was still rodeo on.
01:39:36.399 --> 01:39:55.279
And myself and Jennifer and and Charlie Kingsbury, Charlie, it was actually Charlie's Charlie's brainchild, you know, and Charlie's like, let's let's have a let's have a uh a church service because when you're out there, you're getting pulled from 20 different directions every day.
01:39:55.600 --> 01:40:29.520
And we he Charlie saw that from being right there with me in the trenches, and he's like, why don't we bring you guys in here and just in a real relaxed atmosphere, and let's have a a big time speaker come in and just really pour into you, you the guy, the contestants, and the and their families, and let them just be able to kick their feet back and relax and have Sunday as a day they can kind of just kind of be be them be fed.
01:40:29.840 --> 01:40:31.520
I'm like, hey, I love it.
01:40:31.680 --> 01:40:39.920
Well, then he he and he and Larissa and they and then they get Jennifer involved, and then it's like and then Jennifer gets Stacy Gilbert involved.
01:40:40.000 --> 01:40:40.399
Yeah, yeah.
01:40:40.640 --> 01:40:43.760
And you know what happens when you get Jennifer and Stacy involved.
01:40:43.840 --> 01:40:49.039
It's like, hey, we're going to do this to the degree of excellence that's never been done.
01:40:49.199 --> 01:41:03.520
And so uh uh we we we videoed all the testimonies way out in advance where we could use NFR guys, but they didn't have to get up there and try to prepare and be nervous to speak.
01:41:03.680 --> 01:41:16.960
We videoed them and we edited it and and everything was done with we had, you know, one few years we had Michael Irvin, we had uh uh we had Huckabee come speak one time, we had Dr.
01:41:17.039 --> 01:41:18.479
James Dobson spoke one time.
01:41:18.640 --> 01:41:19.039
Nice.
01:41:19.199 --> 01:41:34.960
Uh it was we've we've had uh just so many big name people that that really did just a killer job, you know, and did and knocked it out for that are you know so spirit-filled.
01:41:35.119 --> 01:41:37.760
And anyway, it was it was a great deal.
01:41:37.920 --> 01:41:48.159
And so then we that was one of the main reasons we bought this building, because we're gonna move elevation from Vegas to home.
01:41:48.399 --> 01:41:51.680
Well, we're here, we're putting down roots, rise up, flourish once again.
01:41:51.840 --> 01:41:57.520
What we want to do is for our community is be able to do the same type thing here.
01:41:57.680 --> 01:42:13.359
So we had for the new year this last year, we had a big event and we we kind of had our uh bringing in the new year right here as our uh as our first as our first uh event that we had here in the in the warehouse.
01:42:13.520 --> 01:42:13.840
Wow.
01:42:14.000 --> 01:42:17.680
And that's kind of the plan, the long-term plan is we're gonna have events here.
01:42:17.760 --> 01:42:43.600
We're having a it's a Holy Ghost uh uh harvest is what they the for Halloween right here in the and we're gonna have Jennifer, of course, like always, she's got a petting zoo coming, she's got pony rides, she's got bouncy houses, we've got a full band that they're gonna have, praise and worship band, uh, of course, all food trucks and all kinds of stuff.
01:42:43.760 --> 01:42:58.239
Wow, on on that Saturday for for we're gonna block the streets off and and we have uh you know during earlier in the day they they they trick or treat down Main Street, and so then that everybody will end up down here.
01:42:58.560 --> 01:42:59.119
That's cool.
01:42:59.520 --> 01:43:00.720
Big event uh for that.
01:43:01.039 --> 01:43:01.359
That's cool.
01:43:01.520 --> 01:43:03.920
Then you just come to Throckmorton on Sunday, do the same thing.
01:43:05.520 --> 01:43:05.920
That'd be great.
01:43:06.079 --> 01:43:06.479
There you go.
01:43:06.560 --> 01:43:07.119
Yes, sir.
01:43:07.359 --> 01:43:23.760
Well, do you um for any for any guys or gals who may be listening who are who are wanting to know to have a faith similar to yours, to to have a a want to have that relationship, what what advice would you give them?
01:43:24.000 --> 01:43:45.119
I I just think that you know really get alone with the father, get get get get learn to fall in love with the father and to have a relationship with God as as because he does.
01:43:45.279 --> 01:44:01.279
He he the prodigal son, the story of the prodigal son is I think portrays the the the father the best in the Bible, probably one of my favorite stories in the Bible.
01:44:01.520 --> 01:44:20.880
You know, the the the kid runs off, you know, he wants his inheritance, he runs off, he spends it all, and he decides to come back home, and as he's coming back home, the my favorite part of the story is as he's coming back home, and he says when he's a long ways away, the father sees him and he runs to meet him.
01:44:21.840 --> 01:44:44.560
And that that's the that's the the love of the father, you know, of he he's looking for us, and all he's wanting is just us to take the first step, the first move, to seek him, to to to really come to him and say, I I need you, Lord.
01:44:44.720 --> 01:44:48.239
I need you, I need, I I ask this question every day.
01:44:49.199 --> 01:44:51.039
God, what are you saying to me today?
01:44:51.920 --> 01:44:53.680
W where where do you want me?
01:44:54.159 --> 01:44:56.479
What what do you have for me today?
01:44:57.520 --> 01:45:04.720
Help me to see where you're moving and help me to be man enough to go link up and step into whatever that is that you're calling me.
01:45:04.880 --> 01:45:08.640
Help me to step into my destiny that you're calling me to today.
01:45:09.760 --> 01:45:19.439
Show me what I'm missing, and I give you authority to, I give the Holy Spirit authority to teach me and move in my life.
01:45:19.600 --> 01:45:22.000
And whatever that is, it's gonna be a good day.
01:45:22.159 --> 01:45:29.920
You know, and it and we we go through, we we go through it, it it doesn't all of a sudden you just, you know, everything's sunshine and roses.
01:45:30.319 --> 01:45:37.520
No, you have tough days, but those are the those are really the days that you're real, I'm really glad that I've done that because that's the way I make it through.
01:45:37.840 --> 01:45:40.319
Because I know I've already quoted it.
01:45:40.560 --> 01:45:44.640
God's working in all things, He's moving and working in our life.
01:45:44.800 --> 01:45:58.319
And sometimes there's valleys, like David talks about in the 23rd Psalm, there's valleys that you have to walk through because there's those those goodness and mercy is follow, will follow.
01:45:58.560 --> 01:46:00.640
And we're gonna live in the house of the Lord forever.
01:46:00.880 --> 01:46:10.239
So if if if if those days, the bad days, the days that you go, man, I really wouldn't have picked this.
01:46:10.640 --> 01:46:18.479
I look back on them and I go, man, those are the days I really that really were well, I was lifted up.
01:46:18.960 --> 01:46:24.000
I was really walking by faith, and you really were there with me, Lord.
01:46:24.319 --> 01:46:46.000
So to do that, I I think that that's just getting God's word, get on, get before, get in, get in uh, I I we try to, I try to, I try to get myself involved with as many I I see where God's moving and I want to go join, link up, whether it's men's group on Wednesday morning, whether it's Wednesday night, I lead a small group of high school boys.
01:46:46.239 --> 01:46:54.640
Uh Sunday morning is we teach a young uh a young couple's uh Sunday school class.
01:46:54.880 --> 01:47:05.840
Wherever that is, I just came from a men's conference that a group of men that are just spirit-filled men that are the kingdom men in the room when you walk in the room and they're they're seeking the face of God.
01:47:05.920 --> 01:47:10.079
And and I think just get find find there's people around.
01:47:10.159 --> 01:47:14.399
There's there's there's organizations, there's there's groups.
01:47:15.119 --> 01:47:21.520
There's nowadays we can be mentored by people that you will never meet.
01:47:21.920 --> 01:47:24.960
You all these great podcasts, yeah.
01:47:25.680 --> 01:47:41.279
You can you can you can get the word and you can get the the spirit-filled ministers that are are really are really seeking the face of God and and be hungry for him, for his presence, for his word.
01:47:41.760 --> 01:47:52.399
And uh I I think that that's nowadays with all of this technology that we've got, man, you everybody wants to be entertained all the time.
01:47:52.640 --> 01:47:54.479
Okay, if you're gonna be entertained, guess what?
01:47:55.039 --> 01:47:59.520
I'm gonna plug in a podcast that's somebody that's teaching me something about the father.
01:48:00.319 --> 01:48:03.680
And let and and that's that's that's a way.
01:48:03.840 --> 01:48:15.920
Instead of scrolling on on TikTok or whatever, if it's not got something that's of the father, I don't I don't really have much time for it.
01:48:16.000 --> 01:48:16.560
You know.
01:48:16.960 --> 01:48:30.079
So I think that's a that's a there's there's no excuse nowadays for us to not be able to to uh really have people that are mentoring us and people that you are mentoring.
01:48:30.319 --> 01:48:33.439
You really want to learn something, start teaching it.
01:48:33.760 --> 01:48:35.199
That's the best way.
01:48:35.359 --> 01:48:36.000
You know what?
01:48:36.079 --> 01:48:44.159
You this just this little experience that you've with this podcast, how did how did you did you were you a professional when you started?
01:48:44.399 --> 01:48:46.640
I'd like to say so, but no, no.
01:48:46.880 --> 01:48:49.119
And how much have you learned since you started doing it?
01:48:49.279 --> 01:48:50.479
Oh my goodness.
01:48:51.359 --> 01:48:57.119
So the rest here if you're waiting for your until you're ready to do something, you'll never do it.
01:48:57.359 --> 01:48:57.760
So true.
01:48:58.000 --> 01:48:59.840
Jump in there and get after it, man.
01:48:59.920 --> 01:49:02.720
Get it get you a Bible and start marking that baby up.
01:49:02.880 --> 01:49:04.640
Use it, write in it, you know.
01:49:04.800 --> 01:49:14.239
Learn God's word, learn God's promises, hook up with Christian men and women, get yourself involved in in a ch local church.
01:49:14.560 --> 01:49:22.079
And uh, and and man, go at it like if you want to like you're trying to be a world champion, you know?
01:49:22.640 --> 01:49:25.039
And and and that's time spent.
01:49:25.199 --> 01:49:27.680
There's no there's no substitute for time spent.
01:49:27.920 --> 01:49:40.239
That's my I mean that's quite a bit of quite a few pieces, but I think it's if it's if you're really serious about it, then you'll do whatever it whatever possible to be able to to uh meet the father.
01:49:40.560 --> 01:49:50.159
Do you what would be some of those podcasts that you or maybe m other men or women that you enjoy just listening to, being mentored by over entertainment?
01:49:50.479 --> 01:49:56.800
I've got I've got people that I've I've really, you know, uh Josh uh Josh Howarton.
01:49:56.960 --> 01:49:57.520
Josh Howerton.
01:49:57.680 --> 01:50:01.279
I was gonna we were Brian and Now we're talking about him on the way up here.
01:50:01.520 --> 01:50:02.239
Is it Joby?
01:50:02.399 --> 01:50:07.119
Joby uh is my another one of the guys that got the has the big beard.
01:50:07.359 --> 01:50:11.920
Uh and then my two guys that I'm like I can't get enough of is Matthew Hagee.
01:50:12.000 --> 01:50:14.159
I I'm I listen to Matthew all the time.
01:50:14.720 --> 01:50:16.720
You didn't go, did you go to the same conference he did?
01:50:16.880 --> 01:50:17.119
Yes.
01:50:17.279 --> 01:50:19.039
Well, I well, not not this week.
01:50:19.279 --> 01:50:19.760
Okay, okay.
01:50:20.079 --> 01:50:22.000
But he's he's like one of my go-to guys.
01:50:22.079 --> 01:50:23.520
I I'm he's a rancher.
01:50:23.600 --> 01:50:23.840
Yes.
01:50:24.319 --> 01:50:24.640
Absolutely.
01:50:24.720 --> 01:50:26.079
Yeah, he's got some STS bulls.
01:50:26.640 --> 01:50:26.960
Does he?
01:50:27.119 --> 01:50:27.520
That's awesome.
01:50:27.840 --> 01:50:28.000
Yeah.
01:50:28.640 --> 01:50:33.760
He called me or he messaged me on Instagram and he was like, hey, we need to I want to talk to you about bulls.
01:50:33.840 --> 01:50:35.119
And I was like, great, yeah, let's talk.
01:50:35.199 --> 01:50:45.279
And yeah I I was being very I I just judging by the book on the cover by Instagram, I was like, okay, this preacher has I I follow him, but okay, he has cows.
01:50:45.359 --> 01:50:46.479
I'm gonna speak very basically.
01:50:46.560 --> 01:50:46.720
Yeah.
01:50:47.039 --> 01:50:56.800
And I think he realized that I was speaking, and then he just flexed on me, talking about yearlins and hedging and all these things he bought, and I was like, oh, hey, let me tell you something.
01:50:56.960 --> 01:51:07.359
I've never you you if you want to test him, if you ever get a chance to talk to him, just bring up, I don't care what horse, bring up a horse.
01:51:07.520 --> 01:51:08.000
Really?
01:51:08.560 --> 01:51:14.720
He will tell you somewhere in the lineage something about that horse.
01:51:14.960 --> 01:51:15.279
Wow.
01:51:15.439 --> 01:51:17.359
That you're like I had no idea about that's how.
01:51:17.600 --> 01:51:19.279
Oh, he's a he's he's ridiculous.
01:51:19.439 --> 01:51:20.079
He's ridiculous.
01:51:20.239 --> 01:51:21.119
I'm like, you're smart.
01:51:21.840 --> 01:51:26.000
I mean, you you were gonna start trying to teach me how to short rap everybody before too long, you know what I mean?
01:51:26.239 --> 01:51:29.920
But but he's he's one of my main guys that I listen to.
01:51:30.079 --> 01:51:35.439
And then Ed Young out at Fellowship at Ed Young at Grapevine.
01:51:35.600 --> 01:51:35.840
Okay.
01:51:36.000 --> 01:51:38.239
Yeah, he's he's wonderful.
01:51:38.399 --> 01:51:48.640
Uh I just, you know, I'm I'm a you know, I I'm I'm constantly, I'll tell you what I've turned into is Philip Anthony Mitchell is like, oh my goodness.
01:51:48.720 --> 01:51:57.279
I went and sp listened to his at C three and it's like, man, he's got he's just got such a passion for the lost.
01:51:57.600 --> 01:52:08.239
You know, just he is really, really doubling down on and then my my one of my spiritual fathers is Andy Taylor up in in Sayre, Oklahoma.
01:52:08.399 --> 01:52:15.920
So anytime I ever get a chance to to all all of those, I'm kind I'm trying to consume that as much of that as I can, you know.
01:52:16.159 --> 01:52:36.800
And then if you get a guy that's really kind of trying to be business minded and with the spiritual side, uh John Maxwell and and Craig Rochelle, you know, and and Andy Stanley, and so any of those guys like that, you know, Jeff Henderson, I'm I'm always in on those guys too.
01:52:36.960 --> 01:52:41.600
You know, have you listened to the podcast with uh Josh Howarton and Philip Anthony Mitchell together?
01:52:42.000 --> 01:52:42.560
Isn't it good?
01:52:42.720 --> 01:52:43.359
Oh my goodness.
01:52:43.520 --> 01:52:44.000
Isn't it good?
01:52:44.159 --> 01:52:44.640
I'm telling you.
01:52:44.880 --> 01:52:46.000
You gotta finish it, Briley.
01:52:46.560 --> 01:52:47.119
You gotta finish it.
01:52:47.520 --> 01:52:48.720
She's halfway through halfway through.
01:52:49.279 --> 01:52:50.239
Yeah, it's it's good.
01:52:50.319 --> 01:53:00.640
You know, I I I listened to him speak at C3 at a conference in Dallas, and then Cliff, my nephew, went to see him at ATT Stadium the other day.
01:53:00.720 --> 01:53:03.119
And he said Oh, the at the big prayer gathering.
01:53:03.520 --> 01:53:05.439
He I told him when he was going.
01:53:05.760 --> 01:53:10.159
When we were going to listen to him, me and Jennifer, I said, I can't tell you how this is gonna go.
01:53:10.319 --> 01:53:14.720
I said, but when we leave here, you're gonna say, Oh, I've never experienced anything quite like that.
01:53:14.880 --> 01:53:17.199
And when we left, that's exactly what we had said.
01:53:17.359 --> 01:53:19.119
And I told Cliff the same thing when he went.
01:53:19.199 --> 01:53:20.479
I said, I don't know what's gonna happen.
01:53:20.560 --> 01:53:23.199
I said, but you're gonna leave there and you're gonna go.
01:53:23.600 --> 01:53:27.760
That was something I've never experienced quite like that before.
01:53:27.920 --> 01:53:29.199
And sure enough, that's what he said.
01:53:29.279 --> 01:53:31.920
He said it was the most amazing thing he's ever been to.
01:53:32.079 --> 01:53:33.119
I bet it was incredible.
01:53:33.199 --> 01:53:33.840
Yeah, incredible.
01:53:34.159 --> 01:53:36.800
I got to see him speak just a little bit, went to a Forrest Frank concert.
01:53:37.199 --> 01:53:37.840
Okay, yeah, yeah.
01:53:38.159 --> 01:53:39.279
And at the very end he came out.
01:53:40.239 --> 01:53:45.600
You've been kind of worshiping and having fun and singing Forr Frank song, and he comes out and hits you right in the heart.
01:53:45.760 --> 01:53:48.399
You're like, how do I feel so powerful?
01:53:48.479 --> 01:53:51.199
Yeah, yet so humbled at the exact same time.
01:53:51.439 --> 01:53:52.000
Yeah, yeah.
01:53:52.319 --> 01:53:53.439
It was it was neat.
01:53:53.600 --> 01:53:54.720
Yeah, it was neat.
01:53:54.880 --> 01:53:55.840
Well, thanks, dude.
01:53:55.920 --> 01:53:57.039
Thanks for absolutely.
01:53:57.199 --> 01:53:57.840
There you bet.
01:53:58.000 --> 01:54:00.239
Thanks for coming in and sharing all that.
01:54:00.319 --> 01:54:00.800
That's special.
01:54:00.880 --> 01:54:01.680
Thanks for sharing all that.
01:54:01.920 --> 01:54:02.319
Yes, sir.
01:54:02.399 --> 01:54:02.720
Well, thank you.
01:54:02.960 --> 01:54:04.720
Anything else we need to know about Stran Smith?
01:54:04.880 --> 01:54:05.039
Oh.
01:54:05.279 --> 01:54:06.159
S cross S.
01:54:06.479 --> 01:54:07.840
I feel like I'm just gonna say that to everyone.
01:54:08.239 --> 01:54:08.720
You're wrong.
01:54:08.880 --> 01:54:09.520
That's right.
01:54:09.680 --> 01:54:10.800
Well, here's the deal.
01:54:10.880 --> 01:54:13.439
This is this is my title at this place.
01:54:13.600 --> 01:54:15.279
I'm just the crash test dummy.
01:54:15.439 --> 01:54:16.399
That's a pretty much it.
01:54:16.720 --> 01:54:20.479
If it makes it, if anything makes it through me, then we can put it in the line.
01:54:20.560 --> 01:54:25.199
But that's pretty much I'm the I'm pretty much the I'm the floor sweeper and the crash test dummy.
01:54:25.359 --> 01:54:30.000
That's kind of my, that's kind of my my about as high as it gets for me around here.
01:54:30.159 --> 01:54:30.800
Yeah, yeah.
01:54:30.960 --> 01:54:34.000
Well, if anybody wants to come to the store or see it online, where do they need to go?
01:54:34.239 --> 01:54:34.479
Absolutely.
01:54:34.560 --> 01:54:39.039
It's 1930remnant.com and then stsranchware.com.
01:54:39.199 --> 01:54:43.199
So it's uh both those two, and then we're right here on Main Street and Childress.
01:54:43.520 --> 01:54:45.520
You know, we would love to have you stop in.
01:54:45.600 --> 01:54:49.520
We're out here on the on 287 Main Street, right here at the Remnant.
01:54:49.680 --> 01:54:52.159
You mean you can't miss it like I did when I drove?
01:54:53.359 --> 01:54:54.000
Yeah.
01:54:55.920 --> 01:54:57.039
Drove right by.
01:54:57.520 --> 01:54:58.159
That's right.
01:54:58.399 --> 01:54:58.880
Oh man.
01:54:59.119 --> 01:55:00.720
Stran Smith, thank you so much.
01:55:01.439 --> 01:55:02.640
Man, it's been a pleasure having you.
01:55:03.039 --> 01:55:04.640
Pleasure getting to know you and the stories.
01:55:04.720 --> 01:55:05.119
That's great.
01:55:05.199 --> 01:55:05.520
Yes, sir.
01:55:05.680 --> 01:55:05.920
That's great.
01:55:06.079 --> 01:55:08.640
