Daniel Defoe was an English writer and journalist who is best known for his novel, Robinson Crusoe. Defoe was born in London in 1660 and began his career as a merchant, but later turned to writing. He produced over 500 works, including political pamphlets, travelogues, and novels. Defoe's writing often focused on social and economic issues of his time, and he was a pioneer of the novel as a genre. His works continue to be studied and celebrated for their insightful commentary on society, as well as their enduring literary value. Defoe died in 1731.
