Speaker 1: Obviously unbelievable college game. Texas was fantastic. I thought both teams deserve to win. Trey mount Mark was big time shot clock.
00:00:09
Speaker 2: Down the five.
00:00:10
Speaker 3: Mart's gonna pull it the LEXTI kiss in. He's a big shot taker, not a big shot maker.
00:00:16
Speaker 4: Swain made a hell of a play at the end of the game.
00:00:19
Speaker 5: Sway turns a corner, swayed on.
00:00:23
Speaker 3: One May Texas he's a chis tied with.
00:00:27
Speaker 2: A free throw.
00:00:28
Speaker 1: I thought our three seniors here really hung in there, and I thought we got good effort off our bench.
00:00:32
Speaker 4: Our guys kept their composure. We got a good shot there at the end.
00:00:35
Speaker 6: Eleven seconds to go, clock ticking. Here comes Braden Smith over the timeline left or right, bakes the screen from paupland or in coming downhill. Braden Smith shooting at Banker.
00:00:44
Speaker 7: No good tip here, takeoffing, then he tipped it into the basket with point seven to play, point seven to play free quarter court shot for Texas is no good and the Blue Boy the Makers hard headed to the lea eight thanks to the tipp in from Tay Paffinren with seven.
00:01:06
Speaker 5: Tenths of a second, remating and honestly left the hand.
00:01:10
Speaker 8: I thought it was in, so I was kind of like hopping, like kind of like excitedly just I was like, yeah, that's it. And then it took a weird balance and it was off, and then I was standing under the ram and Trey tipped it perfectly, and I was just like thank God, like thank god.
00:01:22
Speaker 9: That one coach always says that, you know, it's not the sometimes a lot of times it's not the first shot that goes. It's those tip ins at the end of games. Like he said that, you know, my four years here, so it's kind of cool to, you know, actually experience that.
00:01:33
Speaker 10: It's how it sounded last night, Matt Paynter. You heard from Rob Blackman, the voice of the boiler Makers. You heard from and then Braden Smith talking about that final shot and the hero of the game, amongst many Trey Kaufman Wren as the Purdue boiler Makers, in a typical Sweet sixteen slugfest, advanced their way now to within forty minutes away.
00:02:00
Speaker 5: The final four.
00:02:00
Speaker 10: Here in Indianapolis, Indiana, gonna aftern into you on a Friday. My name is Jake Quarry Eddie Garrison back in the saddle after yesterday's adventures in Cincinnati, which we'll get to later. But there is a lot to today celebrate about Purdue, but also look forward. And that's the thing about this NCAA Tournament, not just this year's NCAA Tournament, but the tournament in general. In order to win a national championship in college basketball, I don't care who you are, I don't care how dominant you are. Sometimes you need a little bit of luck. Sometimes you just need to think, you need things to bounce your way. And that's not.
00:02:48
Speaker 5: To say.
00:02:50
Speaker 10: That luck is what got Purdue there last night. But sometimes when a team wins it all, what do I always say? A lot of times that teams up on the podium, the confetti's falling, and you look back at a moment in the season, a moment in the postseason, and you think about how closely it could have been denied, how close they were to losing a key game. No matter what team you're talking about, was that last night's for Purdue.
00:03:26
Speaker 5: We'll see.
00:03:29
Speaker 10: But as I watched that game, and I watched that and I don't know about anybody else, but the television angle on the tip back by Trey Kaufman Renn I couldn't tell that it went through. I was only able to determine. I can't be the only one with this. I was only able to determine that the putback went in because of the reaction of the rest of the team. The reaction was still one, even Trey Kaufman Wren's reaction not unlike what I had mentioned when Iowa knocked out Florida. You can tell a team that is mature and well coached by their immediate and initial reaction in key moments. And last night, when that ball went through the basket, Fletcher Lawyer put both arms up, but he was three quarters the way back, right at the top of the key and retreating because of defense. And everyone immediately turned to get into defensive position before the timeout with point seven left, or I guess it wasn't even a timeout. Really, they got the ball in, that's what it was in the point seven, but everybody was immediately getting into the defensive position.
00:04:52
Speaker 5: But I thought what was key was this.
00:04:56
Speaker 10: There are two ways, really in twenty twenty six to build a championship team, to put together a roster that can win you a national championship, probably three ways. Actually, one of them is to go with the Fab five kind of thing of we're going to go out like Kentucky did with the platoon system that year. We're going to go and just get five to eight, you know, five star recruits, put them all together and just overpower you. That team didn't win at all, I realize, but you get what I'm saying. Another way, of course, is to mix together a roster that has elite level freshman talent that you know, we saw it last night with Arkansas, even though Arkansas season came to an end, but we know how good a Cup is, for example, and certainly if you look at Arizona produced next opponent, you get a team that has absolutely ice water in their veins, shooting the ball to sixty five percent clip in the tournament freshmen with talented freshman players, and then intermix that with veteran players and size and athleticism across the board. And then there's the way that Purdue has done it. And I thought last night that play at the end of the game perfectly summarized everything that we talked about yesterday on why if you appreciate the game of basketball, if you appreciate the NCAA tournament, if you appreciate and life in general, the concept of working together, understanding people, meshing personalities, and finding people around you that offset your weaknesses while you also see that they can take advantage of and bring out your greatest strengths. And sometimes that takes time. I was at dinner last night before as the game was starting, we went out to watch the game. Two guys sitting next to me Purdue fans. One of them asks me this trivia question, and I'm assuming I didn't fact check it, but I'm assuming that this is correct. As a matter of fact, they may have mentioned it on the broadcast that Fletcher Lawyer and Braden Smith are the only two teammates in NCAA history to start every game of their four year career together on the floor. That I may that may be wrong. There might have been a game or two where they didn't or one of them missed it. I don't know, but it's believable enough. I'll say that because of the fact that they have been great players since the time they arrived at Purdue and stepped on the floor as freshmen. But the way that Purdue has built their program is through getting guys to come in that buy in, that as Elliott Bloom told us on Wednesday, guys that understand that they can be part of something that's bigger than themselves, and guys that understand that you have teammates that are there to lift you when you don't have a great game or to offset what it is that is a weakness of yours. Braydon Smith has not Let's be real here, He's not had a great tournament. He's played well, but he's not played necessarily at the high level of well that he has played over the totality of his career. But when it mattered most, he made some plays last night. Don't get me wrong there, but think about the final play. That final play last night, That final play last night, and what lifted Purdue into the Elite eight represents and encapsulates in symbolizes right there within a snow globe, everything about Matt Painter's program and what Purdue is. You have three guys on the floor right there, all of which were involved in from the time that they got the ball and moved down on that final play. Everyone in the building knows that it's going to go into Braden Smith's hands, and then it's a matter of whether he decides to take it to the basket, paull it, you know, whatever it might be. And he had previously scored by getting to the basket, and so he opts to do that again.
00:09:39
Speaker 5: Now this is where.
00:09:43
Speaker 10: Method number three of how you build Championships comes into play. Dennis Robman is arguably the greatest rebounder in the history of the NBA, at least in the modern era. And Dennis Robin once was sitting at a bulls practice. Jordan was baiting Ron Harper and Tony Koo coach and Scottie Pittman in the games of Horse and etc. And Robbin's sitting on the bench staring and eventually Somebody's like, oh, Robin's shot is so broke, He's not even gonna get out there and play Horse or twenty one or whatever they were playing with the other guys. And Robin's like, No, what I'm actually doing here is I'm studying. What do you mean you're studying. I'm studying where the ball comes off the rim with each player's shot, depending on where they shoot it, so that I best can position myself to rebound in game situations and anticipate where the ball is going to be now that's not exactly what happened with Trey Kaufman Wren. Trey Kaufman Wren simply understood where to be in case that ball went off the very front of the rim. But two guys in Trey Kaufman Wren and Braiden Smith. Braiden Smith who has more assists than anybody in the history of college basketball, and his first and his record breaker both were to Trey Kaufman Whn. These are two guys that totally understand, without even thinking about it, where the other's best area that they need to get things done is, and how to clear out of that area and set themselves up to help out or save the moment should it go awry. Didn't go awry per se by Braden Smith missing that shot, but Trey Kaufman Wren knew and anticipated exactly not only what Braiden Smith was going to go, but also theoretically where the basketball was going to go, and he was able to get that tip in. And these are two players that now are part of the winningest group of seniors in the history of prtdue basketball. So it is only fitting that at the end of that game it would be on display for everyone that teamwork and understanding in symbiotic working alongside one one another and a trust that comes on the floor would be what won that game for Purdue, and Texas played outstanding. Give Texas credit. That Texas game last night looked a little bit like the Ryan Klin Purdue game against Tennessee and the fact that it was just a back and forth slugfest. Now, you didn't have anybody like Purdue that caught that lightning at a bottle per se. Tennessee continued to make shots each and every time they needed to make shots and answer and keep Purdue on their heels a little bit.
00:12:44
Speaker 11: Tramont Mark last night, Jake, I mean that dude was so locked into the zone, Like on all those makes, they weren't even touching the rim. It felt like it was just all net every single time.
00:12:53
Speaker 10: Yeah, And like, and who was the guy for Tennessee. I can't believe I forgot his name? Admiral what was his last Mertal Scofield? Admiral Scofield. Yeah, you know he was kind of the same way in that game, right, But you Purdue had to find they had to dig deep to find ways to make little runs. And another thing that happened last night late in the game. You know, Meyer misses what four free throws?
00:13:25
Speaker 5: Is that right?
00:13:25
Speaker 11: I can't remember for it was four or not. I know he missed too late.
00:13:28
Speaker 10: And after the game. And you could critique this if you'd like. There are always guys in basketball. You will hear people talk about it and they'll say, you know, that's a guy that if we lost but he scored twenty five, he was happy on the bus. But if we won and he had seven and went three to ten, he's sulkin. You never want guys like that on your bus. Now, you could critique this if you'd like. I take it the other way, and that is the fact that after the game he missed four free throws and was clearly down on himself and was clearly almost despondent over the fact that when his team needed at most, he missed those free throws, and you could tell how bad that hurt him. But one of the things he said was the biggest takeaway in totality of what I'm saying, and he said, I need to deliver there, and I'm paraphrasing, I need to be able to make those shots. But that's why it is so beneficial that we have such a great team that all were able to come together and lift up where I wasn't able to deliver. And that's exactly why Purdue is now in the Elite eight. Not because they went out and bought themselves some dynamic score, not because they went out and used nil money to just accumulate three players out the top twenty five, and now they're starting to band together. What you saw last night is the representation of what many people have always loved about college basketball teams. That when a guy's a sophomore, he said, man, I can't wait to see how good he's going to be as a senior. Players that have been through thick and thin, and Elliott Bloom talked about the fact that this Purdue team, when they went out west and lost, came back lost a tight one at home and a total disappointment to Illinois, realized that perhaps the Big Ten championship in the regular season had gotten away from them, so they had to regroup themselves. They had to regroup themselves in order to say, let's just go into the Big Ten tournament and play well to improve our seeding in the NCAA tournament. And it bands together and they win the Big Ten tournament, they get that two seed, and now here they are forty minutes from coming back. Now they've got a monumental task now in Arizona. Arizona is big, Arizona is physical, and some of Arizona's strengths are the same of those of Purdue. They have size inside, they have muscle inside, and don't sleep on the muscle inside of Purdue. I thought, personally, and I thought more should have been made of it. And I'm sure that Bobaraski or someone else, you know, and I've mentioned before, I narrate. I do the voiceover work for many of the instructional videos of NCAA officials for the website that they have to use to log in at request and find out their next game assignment and airs of officiating from the week before. So I occasionally do the voiceover work for that, and they send me the script. I don't see the plays. I only read, and I don't know the teams, but I just read these scripts. Eddie, You've been you know, victim to sitting there when I'm doing this before. Oh yes, And it is so detailed that my days of saying like that guy, that's a terrible call. The rules of college basketball and everything that goes into knowing plays are so intricate that my days of emphatically saying that something was wrong are over with. But there are some plays where I'm like, I'm surprised that more people didn't question that, and it probably was the right call, but I'd like to know why it was, And usually then you read the rules and you go, okay, it was I thought the foul on Cluff that fouled him out of the game. I didn't see the contact. It looked to me like he was moving alongside and kept straight up and did not impede direction, and there was no contact there. That to me felt like a whistle that was blown because normally you anticipate a foul there.
00:17:50
Speaker 5: And I may be wrong, but.
00:17:54
Speaker 10: What was not a foul at the end of the game that several people I have seen point this out or or talk about, was Trey Kaufman Wrehn getting himself in position for that putback. He was not pushing someone. He didn't use two hands and push him out of the way. He used his lower body to basically box out and screen in position for a rebound. It doesn't it seemed odd because usually when a guy is boxing out, he's boxing out, not boxing in. But Kaufman Wrehn was basically he was boxing in. In other words, he's pushing him down lower towards the basket because he knows the ball is going to carr him off the front of it. Dennis Rodman anticipating and understanding where teammates and where the ball is going to be based on where they're shooting it and their tendencies as a player. Because you've been on the floor with this guy for four years, because you were the first person to catch an assist from him, and you were the one that caught an assist from him four years later when he became the most prolific distributor in the history of college basketball. That is symbiotic teamwork, relationship, understanding, that's completing each other's sentences on a basketball floor. That's exactly what that is. And so Kaufman Rhan and that situation at the end of the game, what you saw right there was a five second snippet of everything about Purdue basketball. It was fundamental, it was clean, It was doing it the way that you're supposed to do it, and understanding and reacting to the way your teammate is playing because you know exactly where he's going to be. And Braden Smith knows as he's driving the lane there as everybody in that building does that if he's not able to convert on that play, that everybody else is going to have his back. And so now Purdue is in the Elite eight, and now we look forward to Arizona and what they're going to see against Arizona and what they need to do. The NCA Tournament is the greatest tournament in sport, partially because of its random nature. And it looks to me like Arizona is playing as well as anybody in the country and anybody in this tournament. But then again, so too did we think that of Houston. I thought Houston. What did we say with Brandon Gotton last week? Houston was unbelievable their defense, But Brandon said up mac Ingles said it yesterday. I worry about their tendency to go dry offensively, and you can't do that against Illinois, who was I mean their ability to space and hit shots. And we've seen that over the course of the year from Illinois. If Illinois is able to do that for three more games and shoot like they did last night. Then you've got to really look hard at Illinois. But what if their shots for one game go away. That's the magic of this tournament is now you just don't know from one game to the next with some teams, just how it's going to go. Eddie, you sent me a video yesterday of a dub truck honk and a horn, and then another of what I think was our coworker Joe Copple, who had he was wearing tube socks to his knees.
00:21:09
Speaker 5: Joe Coppa, right, is that right?
00:21:11
Speaker 11: I don't know if they were tubesocks to his knees, but yeah.
00:21:15
Speaker 5: Was he wearing loafers of socks.
00:21:17
Speaker 10: Joe Coppa was at Red's opening day and actually he looked like actually he looked like one of the auxiliary characters in European Vacation. But that's the beauty of opening day. Rights, go be a kid again. How was it, Eddie? Your first picture to Red's opening day with.
00:21:35
Speaker 11: So many people It was almost comparable to win like the super Bowl party was going on downtown Andy, Like there's that many people there. It was. It was insane. That was a blast. Learned a couple lessons along the way in terms of arrival, how to navigate through the entire day, so that whenever we go next time, I am now better prepared. I knew it was big, but I until you get there, You're like, oh my goodness.
00:22:06
Speaker 5: Would you do it again?
00:22:07
Speaker 12: Oh?
00:22:07
Speaker 11: Yeah, absolutely, I would do it again, except I actually go to the game this time.
00:22:12
Speaker 5: You didn't go to the game. No, I thought you went to the game.
00:22:15
Speaker 12: No.
00:22:15
Speaker 5: We thought about.
00:22:16
Speaker 11: Getting in, and then I'm I don't know if we're supposed to share this, but we were illegally parked at somewhere that was only for monthly, monthly patrons, and we're like, They're like, hey, we'll make an exception for you guys, and so they did.
00:22:33
Speaker 10: Okay, now speaking to that, and we got a ton to get to today. By the way, Rob Blackman going to join the show today. I think Derek Schultz might join us. I know he did yesterday with John, but he's in San Jose. And you know, Derek a scept me seven messages already asking if he can come on the program today. So I figured I can. I mean, I write them off on the taxes, so I might as well.
00:22:55
Speaker 11: I thought we had a height requirement.
00:23:00
Speaker 10: Okay, Eddie, do you happen to have the do you happen to have the uh the sound effect? There you go, thank you. You could do that for yourself on that one, Rob Blackman. Who else is on the program today?
00:23:13
Speaker 5: Eddie?
00:23:13
Speaker 11: I'll have Ronald Nored the new coach for the Butler Bulldogs at two ten and uh, that's about it.
00:23:20
Speaker 10: You me.
00:23:21
Speaker 11: Good for the Heart Friday. We got a story to share at two thirty.
00:23:23
Speaker 10: By the way, speaking of parking, some final four fan fest tickets to give away Franciscan Health Good for the Heart Friday, by the way, coming up at two thirty.
00:23:31
Speaker 5: Parking situation. I have a question on this real quick, you're ready.
00:23:34
Speaker 10: You mentioned that you part and you so you parked illegally, but they were okay with it, right, yes, okay, Saturday night, I'm in downtown Indy park on Delaware.
00:23:44
Speaker 5: I try to use the app.
00:23:46
Speaker 10: It for some reason, the app is convinced that I'm in in a parking lot, not on the street, so it will not recognize So as I'm trying to put in the number of the parking spot, it's saying, no, you owe fifty dollars for this parking lot, which is right like adjacent to it. I'm not in the parking lot, I'm in the spot. So I go to the pay box. The pay box connectivity was down. As I was putting in the credit card nine times over, it just kept saying waiting to connect, waiting to connect.
00:24:15
Speaker 5: I filmed it.
00:24:15
Speaker 10: I have a one minute and thirty four second video of it just saying waiting to connect, waiting to connect. I eventually put a note in my dashboard that says the connect that the box is not connecting. I cannot pay and the mobile app is not recognizing this parking spot.
00:24:30
Speaker 5: I come back to my car.
00:24:31
Speaker 10: The guy is at the box has given me a ticket and he says, you're not wrong though the whatever it's satellite or Wi Fi, whatever the connection is for the connectivity of the box, He's like, it's not connecting to the server, so you cannot make payment here. So I've already given you a ticket, but you need to go on this website and dispute the ticket. And I will actually have already put in that this box was not working, so it should they should have the information.
00:25:00
Speaker 5: And here's the box number.
00:25:01
Speaker 10: I actually last night and I know, listen, the ticket is twenty dollars.
00:25:04
Speaker 5: I get it. I love the city of Indianapolis, especially if it's going to pay for the potholes. I'm cool with it.
00:25:08
Speaker 10: But at the same time, I'm like, but I tried to pay at the time, and now you're giving me a twenty dollars ticket. So I went online and filed an official dispute, if you will, at the advice of the clok I mean, he told me. He's like, yeah, I totally get it. You just need to go on here to And I also submitted video as part of my evidence upon their request. Now, but then when you do that, it says fore warning, if you're filing this claim and it turns out to be fraudulent or you don't show up in court, you're going to be fined twenty five thousand dollars. Now that seems extreme. It seems a bit accessible, it does, does it not?
00:25:44
Speaker 5: What do you think? Did I just buy myself a twenty five thousand dollars.
00:25:49
Speaker 11: I don't know.
00:25:49
Speaker 5: I was like, wait a minute, do I just And then I'm like, do I just pay the twenty dollars? I'm like no. But based on the principle here.
00:25:54
Speaker 2: He told me.
00:25:55
Speaker 5: He told me, Look, it's going to be in the notes here when they get to it. So I'd like if anybody knows the answer to that, let me know, because if I'm gonna pay, I need to start saving up. If the fine is going to be twenty five grand.
00:26:07
Speaker 11: You mean all these IndyCar races, they don't pay them. They know one race? Yeah, I know. Darrek makes a joke all the time that he's seen your W two from IndyCar.
00:26:16
Speaker 10: So that's all from my retirement buddy, Okay. I mean that that house in Wyoming ain't gonna pay for.
00:26:21
Speaker 11: Itself, that's true, And neither are all the dog food and supplies you'll need for our seven rescue dogs.
00:26:27
Speaker 5: That's exactly right.
00:26:28
Speaker 10: When we come back, what is it about the next step for Purdue that might actually, as is always the case, it gets tougher each way. But could this actually be the toughest step for the Boilers. I'll explain what I'm talking about when we come back here on this Friday edition Elite eight. All the way around here A Quarrying Company ninety three five one seventy five.
00:26:49
Speaker 11: The fan.
00:26:51
Speaker 10: You know I was driving in I was thinking about songs back years ago, I was thinking out, okay, what music is though, that would to eight produce in the Elite eight. Right by the time we talk to you again, there's the chance they're in the final four and that they're coming back. They're coming back to Indiana quote to Jackson five. But before then, I thought what about songs with eight? And I thought, okay, Sti's had an album called Pieces of Eight. And then of course you know Eminem I'm sure has a ton of eight mile references, which is cool. And I thought about my favorite of every television theme song, aside from instrumentals like the Monday Night Football theme or the This Week in Baseball theme of actual lyric television theme songs of yesteryear, my all time favorite is the song for eight is Enough, Love It and eight is Enough. Fictionally took place in Sacramento, California, which is just about two and a half hours from San Jose, where last night Purdue put themselves into.
00:28:07
Speaker 5: The Elite eight.
00:28:08
Speaker 10: But then I thought maybe that was inappropriate, Eddie, because eight is not enough if you're Purdue, eight is not enough. This isn't enough this program and it's fabulous what they've done, and it's a tremendous accomplishment. Anytime you make the Elite eight, it's a great accomplishment, but the reality is you always want a little more. This is a team that has been in the National Championship Game, and it's a team that has been to this point in the tournament obviously as a program before. But because this group who have now played more games than or one, I should say, more games than anybody in Purdue basketball history, the seniors have the winningest group in Purdue history. Eight is not enough. If they do not beat Arizona, then yes, we will say that was a heck of a year. They won the Big Ten Tournament, they spent the better part of their upper classmen years ranked number one or ranked within the top five.
00:29:14
Speaker 5: They got to the Elite eight.
00:29:15
Speaker 10: Tremendous accomplishments, but at the beginning of the year, the benchmark expectation was Final four in Indianapolis, and so that pressure to an extent or that expectation is a hurdle other than the fact that I think that they're just really mature players and I'm going to get to that maturity as it was exhibited by Trey Kaufman Renn in just a second. But Arizona and what they represent and what they do. Arizona if you watched against Arkansas, and Arkansas is super talented, especially in their backcourt, But what I saw with arazon Zona was their ability not just to utilize their size and their physicality inside. Is physicality a word or is that a made up sports word? It's a word like in radio we have efforting. Is efforting a word we say, like, you know, we're efforting that?
00:30:17
Speaker 11: I believe. I believe efforting is a word.
00:30:19
Speaker 10: Yes, Sometimes I think it just feels like a made up word. And physicality as well, I guess that's better than physicalness.
00:30:27
Speaker 11: Efforting is a non standard word.
00:30:30
Speaker 5: Non standard.
00:30:31
Speaker 10: Okay, that means that it's standard only within our niche What about physicality?
00:30:36
Speaker 5: Is that non standard or standard?
00:30:38
Speaker 11: That is a standard?
00:30:39
Speaker 5: Okay?
00:30:40
Speaker 10: Good, Okay, Well I'm glad I'm using standard words. But the physicality of Arizona is something that Purdue is going to have to try to match. And Purdue can be physical, don't get me wrong, But I.
00:30:51
Speaker 11: Think something that Arizona does really well, Jake, that's been a problem for Purdue this season.
00:30:55
Speaker 5: Then go, I know exactly where you're going is.
00:30:57
Speaker 11: That they do such a terrific but getting into the paint and getting into the middle of the floor, that's when the issues were Purdue defensively have come about this year. And you heard Matt Painter, I think it was in one of the first time out interviews he did last night with Lauren Shahati, was that we have to stop letting them get into the middle of the lane, in the middle of the court. That was one of the keys last night for due against Texas. That's been one of the keys for them and their losses at home this year. And Arizona does a terrific job at getting to the basket and getting in the middle of the floor.
00:31:31
Speaker 5: They also Eddie. Here's the other thing about Arizona.
00:31:35
Speaker 10: When they get to the middle of the floor, if for some way, shape or form, the lane collapses, that they're not able to get what they want, their ability to then distribute quickly back to the outside they've got. You know, they've got a freshman shooting sixty five percent from three in the tournament here.
00:31:49
Speaker 11: I think it's remarkable and how consistent they have been all season long, and they're starting three freshmen.
00:31:55
Speaker 10: Right, I know, no question, and you wonder if eventual that the moment doesn't rise up for that, But I think we're past that now at this point in the game itself, just because these especially this time of year, nobody's a freshman, right. They played thirty games by now, they played in tournaments, they played all that stuff. But Arizona's ability to also get and move around for open looks on the perimeter is a real challenge for Perdue because that's been a Purdue weakness for certain and it's one area that until last night, Perdue has done a nice job here in the last two or three weeks of shoring that up, and defensively they have checked more boxes. But they did show some vulnerability last night.
00:32:41
Speaker 5: Now, the other thing last.
00:32:44
Speaker 10: Night that came into play, so to speak, I thought, and I mentioned it off the top, what we saw last night from Purdue at the way that that game ended perfectly encapsulated who Purdue is and why Purdue is what they are. And there was something that happened after the game. You know, I'm a big believer in precedent. There was something that happened after that game that immediately took me back to something that happened on this show. Something that happened in our conversation with Elliot Bloom, and I said to myself, that's it right there, right there is exactly why Purdue is now forty minutes from the Final Four.
00:33:38
Speaker 5: And what Elliott.
00:33:38
Speaker 10: Bloom mentioned just absolutely, in my opinion, it rang back into my mind because I thought to myself, everything that Elliott Bloom, the director of basketball operations for Purdue told us about this particular player on Wednesday, showed itself in its strongest hand on Thursday night at the most important moment. And we'll let you hear what I'm talking about, and I'll explain further that on the other side. And then Rob Blackman joining us. What time did you say for Blackman again, Eddie, I probably the top of the hour for the Voice of the Boilers, Rob Blackman, Friday edition here Corying Company and the Fan.
00:34:19
Speaker 5: Purdue in the Elite eight.
00:34:21
Speaker 10: Plenty of coverage of that today, Rob Blackman, Voice of the Boilers coming up just over fifteen minutes from now. The game's coming down to the wire last night, and boy, there were a lot of EBB and flows in that game, and there were a lot of times where it certainly felt like Perdue was chasing a tiger by the tail, and you wondered if they were going to be able to close it. Each time that they felt it felt like they got a little breathing room. Texas would come back and hit a three or a couple of threes, go on a run. Now produced down five, and then they got to come back. Now they're up one. Back and forth, back and forth. And as I'm watching the game, and I thought, a really, I just think a silent key to Purdue, And silent is kind of a ridiculous way of saying it because the guy is a mainline player. But if you were to ask people around the country when it comes to Purdue, you know, Brayden Smith is the guy they know about and they probably are aware of, you know, Fletcher Lawyer when he hits threes.
00:35:30
Speaker 5: What that does for Bruden.
00:35:31
Speaker 10: You got to give credit to Fletcher Lawyer as well, because for a guy that had struggled and people started to wonder, you know, boy, in big time moments, big time games, should he be you know, should be on the floor. He's the defensive liability, et cetera, et cetera. But with all of that said, he has really, you know he has found his rhythm again. Fletcher lawyer. But Trey Koffman Rehn is such and underappreciated from a national standpoint aspect of Purduees success because Braden Smith is tremendous and lawyer that I just talked about, and Oscar Cluff last night, certainly, on a number of occasions Cluff I thought to myself, that's exactly why they went out and got that guy, because of his ability to keep the ball alive, keep possessions alive, or deny Texas a second look because of his rebounding last night. And there were yes, I know he fouled out the fifth foul I still had question about, but nonetheless there were moments where you saw why he's there.
00:36:31
Speaker 5: But the.
00:36:33
Speaker 10: Quiet consistency is that of Trey Kaufman Wren and his ability to be effective in different ways depending on where and how Purdue needs him to be. And I think with any great team there is such an importance in having a player that just quietly and calmly does his job and doesn't theoretically or seemingly really worry about what all goes into it. And as that game was coming down to the wire and I thought to myself, Purdue's going to need some big plays down the stretch. And Braden Smith has kind of that it factor about him, and he hit a pull up at one point that he thought, Okay, you know, he's still got a little bit of swag in him. Even though he is his last couple of weeks, he has had some rough outings. He's not been typical Braden Smith. But Kaufman Wrenn. I was thinking to myself, and I wasn't thinking this is going to come down to Trey corpn Reren's gonna tip the ball up with point seven seconds off. I'm not saying that, but I knew that he was going to be an important factor in all of it. And I was just watching his body language on the floor. And as Purdue's getting ready to play an Arizona team that gets key contribution from freshmen, and like I said, nobody's really a freshman at this point in the year. But you want guys that are not afraid of the moment, not because they're overwhelmingly arrogant or cocky about it, but just because they have a different psychological, intellectual approach to the game. And as the game was coming down, to the wire. I kept hearing Elliott Bloom, the director of basketball operations from Purdue, in my head, telling us on Wednesday about what as a person makes Trey Kaufman w Rehn than most college basketball players. What makes him different than most college basketball players.
00:38:26
Speaker 13: You know, he's probably I've said this before to others, he's probably as unique of a young man we've ever had in our program. I mean, he's a philosophy major. In the summer, sometimes our guys get a week here or there where they can, you know, go home and see family and kind of charge.
00:38:42
Speaker 14: Their batteries up.
00:38:42
Speaker 13: We always give the guys like a week around the fourth of July, and then they get some time in August before we get back to school. And I remember asking him, I said, TK, you know, what are you doing this weekend? He goes, oh, just going camping with the grandparents. And I'm like, okay, I go there's an answer I've never heard before from.
00:38:58
Speaker 5: Totally normal for a twenty one year old, right, yeah, yeah, And I.
00:39:01
Speaker 13: Think he went, you know, in one of those state parks, and so then Indianda, they just kind of went and hung out and he did some camping, did some fishing, and that's him. He's just a very He's super complex and how he looks at things, but yet he's just a simple.
00:39:15
Speaker 10: Guy, simple guy, complex at how he looks at things, but finds the simple, relaxing solution camping with his grandparents. Now, I don't know about you, guys, gals. I was a totally different person at twenty one years old in the presence of my grandparents versus the presence of Mike Byron, Mike Hillary, Matt Jacqueline, Scott McConnell, and Dewey Williams. Totally different dude around those guys than when I was with my grandparents.
00:39:46
Speaker 5: Right, and yet last night is the game comes down to it, And I've watched a ton.
00:39:55
Speaker 10: I have interviewed a ton of players in game winning moments, with minutes of them winning a huge game on a huge play. I can still recite for you verbatim. In nineteen eighty seven the Indiana National Championship, the postgame interviews. You know, Ricky Callaway, I just wasn't moving on offense.
00:40:21
Speaker 5: Coach wanted to go to a three guard offense, decided to take me out, and I was just cheering on the bench while we saw guys like Keith Smart. That's right, that's right, That's that's part of when it when you know, being a championship ball game, I'm getting ready to go find Keith and give them the biggest kiss that I ever had. Hey, Mom, Dad, Jamie, back home, Trent. Yeah, you name it.
00:40:38
Speaker 10: Exhilaration, excitement, energy, And that's a national championship versus the Sweet sixteen game.
00:40:43
Speaker 5: I get it.
00:40:44
Speaker 10: But nonetheless, Trey Kaufman Wrenn tips in the ball with point seven seconds left, sens Purdue to within forty minutes of a Final four in Indianapolis, Indiana. The team that started out the year rate number one, had their EBB and flows Big Ten Tournament champions now knocks out yet. So it was an eleven seed, but a team out of the SEC that was shooting lights out, that was playing well, that had already had upsets in the tournament, and now here they are on the doorstep of back to college basketball's biggest stage and all of that excitement, and I'm thinking to myself, Trey Kaufman ran in this moment, is going to be me when I'm around all my buddies at the age of twenty one, I want to see the energy. I want to see the raucousness. I'm assuming this guy is going to be off the charts, and yet when he's asked about it, literally it's Grandma, Grandpa a tent and like Turkey run State Park, here we go.
00:41:36
Speaker 15: It was Smith's one on one layup to put the team up three earlier.
00:41:40
Speaker 5: When did you know, especially.
00:41:41
Speaker 15: As your team was talking about those final seconds, that Smith would go in for the layup again? And how did you get yourself in position for the tiffin.
00:41:47
Speaker 5: No, that's what we drew up.
00:41:49
Speaker 16: And we have so much experience with these guys, and that's what Sasha said. It's winning time, it's winning tom and so you know it's our job to make big lays a big moments.
00:41:58
Speaker 15: Speaking of experience, this is one of the most experienced teams in the NC Oflake tournament. How did that experience calm you guys in the biggest moments.
00:42:06
Speaker 16: Yeah, just I don't feel like we had any nerves. You know, we kept, you know, being levelheaded. It's a really good team. We just played stuck to our game plan. Gon'll pull it out.
00:42:14
Speaker 15: Well, Listen, every single game matters, and every single game is bigger than the one before. Why can this team be different and go all the way.
00:42:22
Speaker 11: Because we deserve it. We deserve it.
00:42:24
Speaker 16: Our our team is putting so much work. You know, these guys love each other, and you know, like I said, we've put.
00:42:30
Speaker 5: In a lot of work.
00:42:31
Speaker 15: You certainly have all the confidence you need. Congratulations and we'll see you on Saturday.
00:42:35
Speaker 5: Yeah, thank you.
00:42:36
Speaker 10: Ali the Forest interviewing Trey Kaufman ren right there, that right there, Everything about that was composure, maturity, and the complexity of reading that and seeing it from a different aspect than probably most players.
00:42:51
Speaker 5: He was so calm right there.
00:42:53
Speaker 10: I said the thing afterwards, that said, this guy just sent his team to the Elite eight and he sounds like he's sitting there having dine with his grandparents. Just I'm not saying he wasn't happy, but I loved and I'm not crushing him for it by saying, like where is the excitement? I'm saying I love the maturity, I love the composure, I love the confidence, but I also.
00:43:22
Speaker 5: Love the fact that there is some love in what he was saying.
00:43:28
Speaker 10: Basically, what he was saying in that interview was well, I mean we all we all love each other, we all look out for each other, we all we deserve this because we've been together. We've never complained, we've had disappointment, we've bounced back from it. And here we are and they may well be at Lucas Oil Stadium, but a big one to overcome between now and then with Arizona, and the guy that will be on the microphone for all of it will let you again hear his fantastic from last night. Rob Blackman, the voice of the Boilers, joins us.
00:44:03
Speaker 5: Next.
00:44:05
Speaker 1: Obviously unbelievable college game Texas was fantastic. I thought both teams deserve to win. Trey Mount Mark was big time shot.
00:44:14
Speaker 2: Clock down to five.
00:44:15
Speaker 3: Mark's gonna pull it the lefty kiss In. He's a big shot taker, that a big shot maker.
00:44:22
Speaker 4: Swain made a hell of a play at the end of the game.
00:44:24
Speaker 5: Sway turns a corner.
00:44:26
Speaker 12: Sway on the Cluffee one Texas.
00:44:30
Speaker 2: He's a chips time with.
00:44:32
Speaker 17: A free throw.
00:44:33
Speaker 1: I thought our three seniors here really hung in there, and I thought we got good effort off our bench.
00:44:37
Speaker 4: Our guys kept their composure. We got a good shot there at the end.
00:44:40
Speaker 6: Eleven seconds to go, clock ticking. Here comes Bradon Smith over the timeline left or right, bakes the screen from Gaufman Rin coming downhill, Bradon Smith shooting at Banker, who good tip here take coffin.
00:44:52
Speaker 7: Then they tipped it into the basket. What point seven to play? Point seven to play?
00:44:58
Speaker 2: Free?
00:44:58
Speaker 5: Corner court shot for Texas is no.
00:45:01
Speaker 7: Good and the PRU point of thinkers hard headed to the Elite eight thanks to the tip in from Tay Puffman Rin with seven tenths of.
00:45:12
Speaker 5: A second, promating honestly left the hand.
00:45:15
Speaker 8: I thought it was in, so I was kind of like hopping like kind of like excitedly just I was like, yeah, that's it. And then it took a weird balance and it was off. And then I was standing on the ram and Tray tipped it perfectly, and I was just like thank God, like thank God.
00:45:27
Speaker 9: That one coach always says that, you know, it's not the sometimes a lot of times it's not the first shot that goes, it's those tip ends at the end of games. He said that, you know, my four years here, so it's kind of cool to you know, actually experience that.
00:45:39
Speaker 10: Only fitting that Trey Kaufman read would see that last play as being something that for four years he had been told was a possibility, and then when it was there, he was Johnny on the spot because that is so symbolic of everything about this Purdue team, a four year effort now that has them two halves away, one went away from the Final four in Indianapolis. Matt Painter you heard from, as well as Braden Smith and Traycoff and Ran and of course the game winning call last night in the Purdue Radio Network from Rob Blackman, who joins us on the Java House col Brew Coffee guest line from San Jose, Rob, before we get into the game, and also where it goes from here, I will first ask this from a television standpoint, it was almost impossible to see that that tip went through, So I give you massive kudos. I don't know what your angle and perspective was, but like from where we're watching on television, I'm like, where did the ball go? And you were able to tell, but I would imagine it was total mayhem. What a moment last night?
00:46:44
Speaker 18: Yeah, it Wasn't it crazy? Because the ball was tipped so perfectly at such a perfect angle. The net did not move right as you saw on television, the ball came perfectly down to the middle of the net and didn't move the net. Yess, I could tell from my angle was Courts sided right across from the Purdue bench, that it had gone in the bucket. But my other visual clue was the entire Purdue team jumping up off of the bench. I could tell by their celebration that that thing had obviously gone in the basket. But to your point, I've watched the television replay a handful of times myself, and you're right, it was hard watched on television to see whether or not that bowl went in or not.
00:47:21
Speaker 10: Rob you touched on something there that I want to elaborate on, and that is that there's a great photo of Fletcher Lawyer, who of course is in the back because he was at the top of the key and was retreating, and he's got his arms out when he sees that ball go through, and Trey Kaufman Wren was already turning, heading towards the other end of the floor and kind of gave.
00:47:42
Speaker 5: It just a little bit of a fist bump.
00:47:45
Speaker 10: But I thought it spoke volumes of the fact that Purdue's instant and immediate reaction was to get into defensive positioning. Not the players on the bench, but the players on the floor. Is that coaching or is that simply the maturity or is it actually both?
00:47:59
Speaker 14: Yeah? Of both.
00:48:01
Speaker 18: And look when you have a team led by mostly seniors, not all. But let's face if the leaders on the team are the seniors and there's nothing they haven't seen.
00:48:11
Speaker 14: I know we've talked about this, Jake before.
00:48:12
Speaker 18: This is a team that has not only played for national championship I'm talking about the seniors here, but it is also lost in a one sixteen game, So they literally have been both ends of the gamut in the NCAAA tournament. The other thing I think that gets lost in this and give credit again to having a group, even on the bench, that has a pretty good understanding in the game of basketball. No one on that perdue team came out onto the floor as far as the bench players. That's been kind of a big deal in this NCAA tournament. Teams rushing the floor after last second bucket. If you watch closely, the whole team has their arms out holding one another back as if to say, okay, let's not screw this up by getting a technical foul here with less than the second remaining. But to answer your KEP question directly, while it is a combination of both, I think the fact that you have some real veteran leadership and those seniors on the floor at that particular juncture in the game speaks volumes of what that type of experience can do for you, especially in this type of situation.
00:49:11
Speaker 10: Rob, you and I, and I'm going to do a really bad analogy here, but you know you and I both work together on the broadcast of the Indianapolis five hundred mile race.
00:49:19
Speaker 5: Okay, and there have been times, thank you, Eddie, there have been times. Is that the bad analogy sound?
00:49:28
Speaker 12: L Eddie?
00:49:28
Speaker 5: Is that what you're going with? I haven't even used it yet.
00:49:30
Speaker 11: You know, I just had well, you said you had a bad one, so I went to playing Rob.
00:49:34
Speaker 10: There are times at the end of the race where you will interview, say a race winner or somebody had a great race, and they will say, look, we were able to get our car in position in the end despite the fact that our second or third stop, the car was not handling well, it was not running well. We just had to fight through that aspect of the race to then put ourselves back in position. Right what player for Purdue right now do you feel like as they go into the Elite eight is coming off of a couple of stints that have not been their best and now the hope is that they've gotten all of that worked out and can make the proper adjustments and get themselves back into the form that they were through qualifying in the beginning of the race.
00:50:17
Speaker 18: As crazy as it sounds, the guy that was just named All American last week first team All American in Braiden Smith. The beauty of Braiden is even when he has a bad game, statistically, it doesn't look like a bad game. But you think about the game against Miami in the round of thirty two. He had a career high eight turnovers in that game. Now he still had eight assists and still scored the ball well, I didn't shoot it well, but scored it well. So when it's all Sid and Denny, I think he ended up with twelve points in that game. When it's all said and then you're like, ah, forretty good game for Braiden Smith. Well, as far as his standards, No, not a great game for Braiden Smith.
00:50:53
Speaker 14: Last night.
00:50:53
Speaker 18: He's six of sixteen shooting oh three from three, missed a couple of free throws, yet has sixteen points, five assists, two steals. Right, yeah, and I like I'm speaking from Brayden, but I feel very comfortable in saying that he would tell you the same thing. He has not had a great NCAA tournament, but he has still been a major difference maker for this team. If he would take himself back to that magical level, which we've seen him do numerous times in his career, that would be the guy that could be the big difference maker for Purdue tomorrow again. He'd be the first to tay it. He hasn't been great, now he's been good again. The beauty of an All American Even when you're not good, you're still bordering on great because that's what they do. But he Yeah, he's the one guy that if he if he gets back up to his magical level, Prdue will have a chance to knock off Arizona tomorrow.
00:51:45
Speaker 10: When you look back at Arizona, I want to get into that because Arizona I think is outstanding rob but the tournament. The thing, it's weird, you know. I thought Houston was playing as well as anybody in the country. And then they get a couple of days off and they went out and they left their offense you know. I mean I shouldn't say in Houston because they were playing in Houston, but you know what.
00:52:00
Speaker 11: I'm saying, they left it in Oklahoma City.
00:52:03
Speaker 5: They did. They left in Oklahoma City, Okay? For Purdue?
00:52:08
Speaker 10: Is it possible, Rob, that the best thing to happen for this Purdue basketball team was between January twentieth and January twenty seventh, when they lost three games in a week?
00:52:18
Speaker 5: Did that force them? Did that?
00:52:20
Speaker 10: You know, this is a team that there was so much praise, so much expectation, and we wondered at that point where there are chemistry problems? Were guys not getting along? Are they just tired of one another? Did they need to just kind of sit back and be reset?
00:52:36
Speaker 14: Uh.
00:52:37
Speaker 18: You not the first to ask me this question, so you'll be one of the many to get a bad answer here from me.
00:52:43
Speaker 14: But I don't know, I really don't know.
00:52:47
Speaker 5: Or for that matter, of late February, I mean they lost three or four, right?
00:52:50
Speaker 18: Yeah, Well, look for was two of two of their last six going into the Big Ten Tournament. For it was two and four limping into the Big Ten Tournament and now is off seven wins in a row. I think at the end of the day, Jake, I don't think. I know winning losing regardless, Perdue just wasn't good enough defensively. Matt Painter and the staff just kept harving that to the team even when they were winning games, that you're just not good enough defensively right now if you want to do something special in the month of March. Now, how they were able to get that point across right before the start of the Big Ten Tournament, I'm not certain, but obviously they found some type of magical elixir that allowed the guys to buy into being better on the defensive end, because that's where it's all started.
00:53:36
Speaker 14: So while it's probably.
00:53:39
Speaker 18: Easy to say, well, the losing streaks really got the attention to the team, I can promise you even when Perdue was winning, the emphasis from a coaching standpoint was guys were just not good enough defensively.
00:53:51
Speaker 14: We can't keep doing this.
00:53:53
Speaker 18: And it did eventually catch up the Purdue obviously, So I would say it's really more about getting better on the defensive end, especially communication and concentration, which are the two words that coaches have been using at nauseum, really more about that than even just the losing, because, as I said, even in winning, it was pretty apparent to everyone involved, at least from a coaching standpoint, Purdue just wasn't good enough on defense.
00:54:15
Speaker 5: Rob what is their schedule today?
00:54:17
Speaker 10: You know, I think when you look at you got to quickly turn around right and Arizona and we're going to get into that. But in terms of just the NCAA tournament and how teams handle it, you get a big win like that and you got to kind of regroup.
00:54:32
Speaker 5: But what does Purdue? What is the schedule today for Purdue basketball?
00:54:36
Speaker 18: Sure, and again the beauty of having done this a bunch with a veteran coaching staff, this is not their first rodeo. They have a pretty good feel for how they like to handle things with an itinerary standpoint, so very similar to what Purdue has done in the past in these situations, breakfast is at nine o'clock local if you wanted it. If you didn't want to have breakfast, I'm talking players here. Obviously, fat guys like me breakfast all the time. But if the players wanted to wanted to sleep in, they could because their first mandatory thing will be lunch at noon, and then right after lunch is an hour film session from twelve thirty to one thirty on Arizona, and then off the arena for a two hour practice there. So, which is pretty standard. That's what Purdue has done as they you know these especially the last three four years where they've made deep runs in the tournament. That's typically been the format. Some guys like to get up and eat a breakfast. Some guys like that, we'll sleep literally until eleven forty five and then show up at noon for lunch. So but yes, that's how produce handled, at least in the last handful of years.
00:55:38
Speaker 10: And then in terms of the film on Arizona, you know, is there is there advantage to the fact that and I guess Arizona to the same point could sit there and watch that game last night before they go out and play. But although they got you know, they got to worry about Arkansas at that point, Uh, Purdue can kick back and say, look, we know for a fact we're going to be playing in the game and watch it. Does the team like did they together watch Arkansas and Arizona? And in addition to that, what do you think jumped out at them about Arizona.
00:56:09
Speaker 18: Well, they don't really get that opportunity simply and you've covered enough of these things. When the game is over, there's that thirty minute open locker room period, and so they're all doing the media stuff. So by the time all of that is done, the game after you was already at halftime. So now you're on the bus, you're back to the hotel, you have a postgame meal. You maybe you're able to catch the flight last five minutes of the game. Maybe by the time you settle in and get a television turned on. So I don't know that any of our guys had a chance really to watch Arizona. Now, the coaches have obviously been up all night watching film after film on Arizona. And then the coaches also, you know, again for your listeners at a little bit savvy about college hoops. Everybody knows everybody. So all the coaches are on the phone with other coaches who have played Arizona and said, you know, hey, what did you think, what worked well?
00:56:59
Speaker 14: What did not work well?
00:57:00
Speaker 18: So you know, everyone's sharing information here, which will the Arizona coaches.
00:57:04
Speaker 14: By the way, are doing the same thing. This is no great secret here. But really, the first time.
00:57:09
Speaker 18: The team will get a chance to look at Arizona from a breakdown standpoint will be at twelve thirty this afternoon.
00:57:17
Speaker 10: What is an area that from what you can tell, Robin, maybe it's early because they haven't had a chance to get into that yet. Right, But what jumps out at you about Arizona or strength of the Wildcats that could exploit weakness for Purdue.
00:57:31
Speaker 18: Well, two things, better keep them out of transition, or actually three things. Better keep them off the foul line, and you better not let them crush you in the paint, because that's really what Arizona is all about. They average eighty six points a game, they are second in the country and made free throw attempts because they get to a ligne all the time, twenty points a game from the free throw line. Literally a quarter of their points come from the foul line per game.
00:57:56
Speaker 14: And then in the paint. They are not Hopefully this doesn't come back to bite me. They are not a prolific three point shooting team. It's just not what they do.
00:58:04
Speaker 5: They have one really good red hot shooter though right now, right.
00:58:08
Speaker 18: Yes, one, and uh, you know who was it? Excuse me necessarily needed. Last night, they only attempted eight threes against Arkansas. They lived in the paint against Arkansas and made it look easy. So again, it's a lot easier for me to sit here and talk about it than for people to execute it on the floor.
00:58:26
Speaker 14: Much more difficult task.
00:58:27
Speaker 18: But you're gonna if Arizona just lives in the paint tomorrow night, it'll be the end of the season for Purdue. And look, by the way you look at an Arizona roster, McDonald's all American, McDonald's all American, McDonald's all American.
00:58:42
Speaker 14: They are not fullyed of talent.
00:58:43
Speaker 18: Uh Sodue's going to have to find a way to again try to try to find some deficiencies in that Arizona offense. Hopefully it's the fact that they're not a good three point shooting team, at least percentage wise, and maybe Purdue can make a few threes. They only made four threes last night. Think about that, you win the lead, pardon of me, a Sweet sixteen game and you only make four or threes often the same guy and produced one of the best three point shooting teams in the country. So hopefully flu has some makes coming their way tomorrow night, and hopefully, fingers crossed, Arizona might not find their way into three point shooting efficiency.
00:59:15
Speaker 5: Is it possible in twenty twenty six?
00:59:17
Speaker 10: Rob Blackman, my guest the voice of the boiler Makers for Purdue Radio the Purdue Radio Network. Is it possible, Rob? For a freshman in twenty twenty six? In an era where guys are playing thirty games and they've played two hundred AAU tournaments and championships and camps at all of that, is it possible for freshmen at this point in the year to get rattled by the stage?
00:59:43
Speaker 18: Well, considering all the freshmen on Arizona's roster that play major minutes, I sure hope so fair.
00:59:52
Speaker 14: But man, there, gosh, darn there's well.
00:59:56
Speaker 18: I suppose I want to say yes, But then I watched Darius Acuff last night. He was really the only good player Arkansas put on the floor last night, and he was a freshman.
01:00:04
Speaker 14: He made it look easy.
01:00:05
Speaker 18: So I suppose it has more to do with the actual player himself and than just the fact that they're a freshman. But Dad gone that Braydon Burry's the freshman for Arizona. Man, and see he is spectacular and he's only missed. I think they said four threes this entire NCAA tournament.
01:00:21
Speaker 12: He's sixty.
01:00:23
Speaker 18: Yeah, they got it hugely well from three to one guy. But CoA Pete. I mean, he doesn't look like a freshman. He getting me six eight, two thirty five. Freshman aren't supposed.
01:00:32
Speaker 17: To look like that.
01:00:33
Speaker 18: So at Kartchakov there's the other freshman from Germany.
01:00:37
Speaker 14: Doesn't play like a freshman. So I don't know, Jake.
01:00:40
Speaker 18: I maybe twenty years ago freshmen were intimidated by the big stage. These guys don't see to be intimidated at all anymore playing at this level.
01:00:48
Speaker 10: I was two thirty five freshman year of college. But I was six' four AND i entered at two oh.
01:00:52
Speaker 5: Five that's the, problem, Right so he Did you didn't put on Good you didn't put on good. Weight, NOW i didn't put on the freshman.
01:01:00
Speaker 10: FIFTEEN i put on the pressure the freshman like a pizza shuttle, thirty, right you.
01:01:05
Speaker 12: Know WHAT i?
01:01:05
Speaker 14: Mean it's okay, though yeah, Understood Lawrence.
01:01:10
Speaker 10: KANSAS i mean it was In chicago's pizza you, know don't get me, wrong but it was good and it was.
01:01:15
Speaker 5: Inexpensive.
01:01:16
Speaker 10: Rob, lastly you're Around Rob, blackman my, guest AND i always find these answers to be, Interesting so no pressure here on coming up with an interesting. Answer but you're around this basketball team in a different way than really any other media. Member you're on the bus with, them you see them on the, airplane you see them in the lobby of the. Hotel you see them after, wins you see him after, losses and you see them when they're building to this, point you, know the two days or whatever it might be in the middle Of september And october when the weather's starting to turn dreary and you're getting. Homesick in all of those, things when you look, Back i'll ask you this. QUESTION i asked somebody. Yesterday you ever See rob one of those like now they have. Them you, know a digital frame that people have on their desk that just scrolls through a different snapshot every fifteen to ten twenty.
01:02:10
Speaker 5: Seconds you Know i'm talking. About, yeah if you.
01:02:13
Speaker 10: Had one of, those of your memories and recollection of This purdue, group do you have a particular moment in that digital frame that very few people saw but you, Did and you, said that's what makes this group different.
01:02:31
Speaker 14: Who put me on the spot here off the top of my.
01:02:38
Speaker 18: Head if if we're going with the digital frame reference here AND i needed something that would forever be in my memory banks, FOREVER i would have two. Frames the first would be the look of dejection in the handshake line after that loss To Fairley dickinson when this group was was were, freshmen because that was a that was a depressing day as someone associated would produe.
01:03:12
Speaker 14: BASKETBALL i would.
01:03:14
Speaker 18: Then follow it up with last night's last night's picture that you were speaking of A fletcher lawyer standing in the background with his arms raced after the tip went.
01:03:24
Speaker 14: In those with the, two with the the TWO i would put side by. Side they would probably perfectly sum up this group of.
01:03:31
Speaker 18: Seniors AS i said earlier in the, conversation they have literally been at both ends of this thing from nca tournament standpoint and ah by the way along the, way they've continued to win at a high. Level and then, LOOK i Understand Zach edy really helped when they were, sophomores make no mistake about. That but this group of, Seniors jake and we're talking about the three that obviously had been here the whole, Time they've won twenty nine games a year on the average in their four. YEARS i think fans maybe don't understand how hard that is to do in major college. Basketball even If purdue loses, tomorrow this senior group will have averaged twenty nine wins a seasoned.
01:04:13
Speaker 14: In their. Careers all four are a part of.
01:04:15
Speaker 18: Me all three of them are in their top twenty history all time scoring In purdue. Basketball Braden smith obviously the all time leader in the history of THE ncaa and career, Assists Fletcher lawyer all time leader in the history of three point baskets made Of. Purdue all the individual accolades, aside and by the, Way Trikoff marin has etched himself in perdue memory forever with his chip In Last, night all the individual things put, aside twenty nine wins a, year Two Big ten regular season, championships Two Big Ten tournament, championships and you've been to The final four at least, once at least, once hopefully. Twice but, anyway to get back to the, answer those would be the two PICTURES i would have side by side summing up how low it was for them at one point in their careers and now how they have really flipped at one hundred and eighty degrees before they.
01:05:04
Speaker 10: Graduated we will see what happens next With arizona coming up for The. Boilers Rob blackman will be on the, call AND i will make this. Prediction Rob, okay no pressure, here But i'm going to guess that Should purdue Beat arizona and punch their ticket back To, indianapolis that there will probably be A Rob blackman call to start off the show coming up On.
01:05:29
Speaker 5: Monday but no pressure on, that.
01:05:30
Speaker 18: Right oh, Man see Now i'm all. NERVOUS i wasn't, nervous and NOW i.
01:05:36
Speaker 5: Am that's.
01:05:38
Speaker 10: Right, well, hey ALL i got to say is just make sure you get plenty of sleep because breakfast is at nine should you choose to have.
01:05:44
Speaker 14: IT i never ever missed.
01:05:47
Speaker 5: Breakfast rob appreciate the time as.
01:05:49
Speaker 14: Always all, Right, jake thank.
01:05:51
Speaker 10: You That's Rob blackman joining us on the. Program good, stuff especially when you think, about you, know think about the THE fdu. Game is it Fairly dickinson or it's Fairly, dickinson, Right not Fairley, dickinson it's Fairly, dickinson, right, yes fairly like that game was fairly messed up when they lost that, game, right, sure, yeah but you think about the there to. Now AND i know THAT i have stated this several, times but there is an element of poetry about it That Braden smith's first ever assists in his record breaking assist were to the same, guy because it just goes to show that you can always kind of get back to the genesis of things by just staying your way through it and plugging your way through it and doing all of the things that are expected of you to do in preparation and everything, else and you can find yourself back to the point where now you have have that second lease on, it so to, speak you know WHAT i, Mean like, you you kind of end up right back where you started from to an, extent but in this, way in a good. Way and the fact that you're back to a point with the same, familiarity with the same, teammates with the same instinct all the way. Through its gonna be a big task Against arizona. Though and he's, right and you made the point as, Well eddie that that area in the, PAINT i mean avoiding Foul jacobson's probably gonna be really, big to be honest with, you because he has not given him quality minutes really so far in the. Postseason but you're gonna need. That you're gonna need him to jump in there and give you that because you've got to spell some minutes one would assume From kluff And, kaufman W rehn and in clogging that paint and sealing that. Off and so you want those you Want, jacobson for, example to be able to so that they don't get in foul trouble and end up out of the game late because they're going to have to try to close off that area as, well Where arizona wants to be able to get the basketball where they're most. Effective and then the perimeter Defensive purdue has been at times so vulnerable.
01:08:25
Speaker 5: And Yet arizona has a guy that could take advantage of.
01:08:27
Speaker 11: That it'll be interesting to see the matchup Of crevas the center For arizona and whether two, yeah whether they put him On trey Coffmre, in or if they put him On Oscar fluff just because of his ability to alter. Shots he's got nine blocks in three games during the tournament so. Far he had a double double in their second round match up Against you.
01:08:50
Speaker 5: Intentionally say tournament that way.
01:08:52
Speaker 11: Tournament, YEAH i think at.
01:08:54
Speaker 10: This point you're intentionally doing the THE i went To syracuse broadcast school.
01:08:58
Speaker 5: Pronunciation, no, okay.
01:09:01
Speaker 11: No but who he matches up WITH i think is going to be the real detrimining factor in how the game could play, out BECAUSE i think if you if they Put crevass on tray Cooff, marien it will be some issues For arizona because he's not very mobile when you get him outside the lane or outside the painting away from the. Basket so if you get him in those dribble handoffs with those high picking rolls and you kind of exploit, it Then Braden smith can get up an underground like you did With Adan Marra. Michigan it'll be fascinating to watch when we come.
01:09:30
Speaker 10: BACK a little recap Of eddie's big day, yesterday which somehow involved taking the day off but not going to a, game which is kind of. Impressive BUT i thought he was going to the game but apparently. NOT i don't know if his day off would have been cleared if we knew the deed na have.
01:09:42
Speaker 5: Tickets but that's, Okay and.
01:09:45
Speaker 10: He's back the walking sound, bite the guy who they make t shirts when he says, something and yet it pays. Off he's at it again and everybody's talking about what he, said and we'll let you hear it. Next love me some minute, work love. IT a lot of talk About purdue today in the. Tournament haven't talked much about the rest of the. Games last, night, Obviously arizona we got into. THAT i Thought illinois was, outstanding AND i really did believe That houston was just kind of laying in the, weeds And i'm, like, man the way they defend and the way they can score the ball from the. Outside now they do go through scoring, loles and that's been something that Hurt houston in the past and that came to bite them last.
01:10:34
Speaker 5: Night But.
01:10:34
Speaker 10: Illinois, Man illinois's ability to have the marksmen on the floor and to move the ball around with anybody that can, hit they can. Score And illinois's offense reminds me a little bit of like The pacers in The garden last year When Nie smith got, hot and it's just like you never know where it's coming. From and three point nine point twelve point lead To Holy, cow and once they got a double digit lead On, Houston you're, like this is over Because, houston you, know being up on That houston, team being up, seven it's Like Tony Bennet's virginia teams back in the. Day a seven point leads a fifteen point.
01:11:11
Speaker 11: LEAD i thought one of the more eye opening things during that game last, Night jay is we talked About illinois and their, offense and we're wondering going into the tournament will they be able to figure it out? Defensively and the size that they have is not talked about. Enough they've got a lot of length they, do and they can disrupt you correct defensively and they're just figured it.
01:11:32
Speaker 10: Out illinois also just feels, like AND i know this isn't the, case but it feels like every player on that floor is like twenty five years. Old they just are very mature and poised in the way that they. OPERATE i think they were. Impressive, Now, iowa. HUH i don't know what to make Of nebraska only having four players on the floor on one of those, plays And Fred hoiberg sounded very confused and even trying to explain.
01:11:58
Speaker 14: It but.
01:12:01
Speaker 10: The Way iowa AND i know this is a team that had lost like seven of nine going into the, Tournament.
01:12:08
Speaker 5: But if you look at the career resume Of ben, McCollum and he was a guy THAT i had.
01:12:19
Speaker 10: MENTIONED i, know he might have been the first guy THAT i mentioned For, indiana AND i realized that he's An iowa city, guy and it probably was a faya complete that he was going To iowa. Regardless And i'm not saying That indiana made a bad, higher But ben McCollum i look at AND i think it's interesting With Scott dolson that the accomplishments in the feats Of Kurt signetti ben McCollum is very. Similar eighty one percent of his wins all, told multiple national championships at a lower. Level AND i thought it was interesting after the game When Charles barkley was, saying, look basketball even more than, football it automatically. Trains it's because you have fewer players and there are fewer ways and more to win. Games it just comes down to the fundamentals of. It And barkley was, saying and for that, reason if you are a if you're winning at The division two, level you're probably gonna win A DIVISION ie level because it's just and he's done a very similar thing to what we saw From Kurt signetti At indiana football, wise he's like Basketball's Kurt signetti without the sound bites and those sorts of, things but the confidence of it and bringing guys over that kind of know his system and then having his, system and maybe it took this long for them to just kind of figure everything, out but the adjustments. Made he played a faster pace than he did At, drake but then At drake he slowed things. Down and now you, know it's a lot of it's based on the personnel that he, has But iowa just looks so well, coached and.
01:13:50
Speaker 5: Then you look at his.
01:13:51
Speaker 10: Resume he's won eighty one percent of his. Games, clearly this guy has an understanding of the game. Itself Kurt signetti when he arrived In bloomington brought with them players FROM. Jmu I've i've talked about how IMPORTANT i thought that was because you're bringing you, know eighteen guys with you that can then say to your locker room like, no, no, No, lizzen just follow the.
01:14:15
Speaker 5: Blueprint here ride the. Madness it.
01:14:18
Speaker 10: Works and of course his just you, know google, ME i, win and the different soundbites that he's had have Made Kurt, signetti you know a national, name and it kind of happened again. YESTERDAY a spring practice gets underway For indiana And Nick marsh is the big transfer portal get for The, hoosiers the wide receiver out Of Michigan. State coming off a year where he had six hundred and sixty two yards, receiving he had six. Touchdowns he's the big get and he showed up yesterday for.
01:14:51
Speaker 5: Practice In.
01:14:52
Speaker 10: Bloomington And Kurt, signetti in ways that seemingly Only Kurt signetti can, do was asked About nick and gave an answer that delivered message not just To marsh but to other groups as.
01:15:05
Speaker 19: Well here you go two years of production At Michigan. STATE i remember we Played maryland early in the year and they did too and saw that tape and he made some big plays in that, game AND i love his gold. Shooes he came out in. Today he learned what getting your ass ripped us all. ABOUT i don't know if that happened to very off In Michigan. State that was before practice. Started that was a wake up, call but, no he's really worked, hard done a great job for.
01:15:30
Speaker 10: Us hold, ON i want to play this one more time and listen closely to when he says the part about, like you, know getting his ass, ripped and Then Michigan.
01:15:41
Speaker 5: State you can you can hear.
01:15:46
Speaker 10: The Curt signette like stepped back and kind of the the weird, grin the grit like look to the side, grin and the socially awkward like what's this guy talking?
01:15:58
Speaker 5: About it's like AN.
01:15:59
Speaker 10: SNL i, mean, honestly it's like a skit From Saturday Night live Of AND i don't know what character or what actor it would have been that would Portray Kurt, signetti but it literally is like he knows right then that he's being tongue in cheek but being, serious and there's a level of cockiness. Here this is the kind of stuff that if you were a fan of a different team that would drive you. Nuts but listen to the verbal body language of, yeah and the step back and the hand out to the side and running it back and just literally the body at a forty five hundred angle of like that's, right we're, bad we know.
01:16:37
Speaker 19: It here we go two years of production At Michigan. STATE i remember we played Maryl in early in the year and they did too and saw that tape and he made some big plays in that, game AND i love those gold. Shoes he came out in. Today he learned what getting your ass ripped us all. ABOUT i don't know if that happened in very Often Michigan. State that was before practice. Started that was a wake up. Calls he's really worked.
01:17:00
Speaker 5: Hard it's.
01:17:01
Speaker 10: There he's saying it like from the back of his you, know like he's not outwardly saying.
01:17:07
Speaker 8: It.
01:17:07
Speaker 11: Right it's like a proud parent, moment, like, yeah my, kid did that?
01:17:12
Speaker 5: CORRECT i was up in.
01:17:14
Speaker 11: There, yeah, huh that's.
01:17:15
Speaker 10: Right, YEAH i mean it is like such A but that's a message to three. Groups it's a message To nick Marsh you're in a new place. Now you're productive At Michigan.
01:17:29
Speaker 5: State but this Is.
01:17:30
Speaker 10: Indiana we do it a little differently around, here which is so weird to say About. Indiana it's also a message to his football. Team you show up wearing gold. Cleats, no it's not how we do it around. Here that's and the thing about what DID i say About indiana when they won the national. Championship The Indiana Alma mater. SONG i don't think it's fight, song But alma mater Song Indiana, Indiana, Indiana we're all for. You we're all for you For.
01:18:06
Speaker 5: Indiana we're not For Nick, Marsh we're not For Josh. Suver we are For.
01:18:13
Speaker 10: Indiana AND i Think Kurt signetty was saying there To Nick marsh and to the rest of his, team the way we do it around here is it's all About indiana gold cleats. Nah but it also was a fun message To Michigan.
01:18:27
Speaker 11: State you can also kind of see that and whenever they score like Touchdown, state they don't do the flashy touchdown, team they do THE, iu they do THE. Iu they look in the fans, that, yeah they don't do anything extravagant or. Coordinated BUT i like the.
01:18:43
Speaker 5: Kind of the shot At Michigan state there produce.
01:18:45
Speaker 10: Sucks so To Ohio state And michigan that's what he, said remember and he and at that time he's, LIKE i KNEW i had to say that BECAUSE i had to get my fans to buy. In right, there he says that To Michigan state because he's, SAYING i need to get my players to buy to know that we're different around. Here, Hey, jake That illinois team is all twenty. Five Jalen rose made a comment about.
01:19:10
Speaker 5: That yeah they.
01:19:11
Speaker 10: ARE i, mean SO i should have said. Thirty my point being like they just seem what you can, tell they're way.
01:19:16
Speaker 5: Older. Eddie you went TO i want to get this straight before we get out back out To. California, yeah you left your house at what? TIME a? Thirty so you went down to The reds game For Opening? Day, well.
01:19:33
Speaker 10: Because they have it's a, parade, Right, OH i mean it's an all day. Thing, well but is there a? Parade, yeah there's a huge. Parade, yeah there's a. Parade there's all, others but other. Stuff, okay but let's go back to so you drive down there at eight thirty, yep and then so AND i don't, Know i've not been, there, SO i mean enlightened. Me so With Red's Opening day, parade does it literally mean, like, okay the parade begins at ten am and it's literally a parade with kids and bands and whatever. Else or is it more, like, no that's just the caravan of dignitaries going in and you're lined up to cheer them.
01:20:06
Speaker 5: ALONG i, mean what exactly do you mean by?
01:20:07
Speaker 11: Parade it's very similar to like The indie five hundred, parade except it's, bigger it's like two hours, long.
01:20:14
Speaker 5: Okay and then does it have former?
01:20:16
Speaker 11: Players, yes, yeah there are former players That Johnny bench was in it, Yesterday Marty brineman was, There Jeff, brantley there are a couple, others the The Ohio olympian and this is all heading towards the. Stadium NOW i don't think it, no not. Really, no it's just kind of Downtown cincinnati.
01:20:34
Speaker 14: Though.
01:20:34
Speaker 10: Okay so then the parade takes, place and then obviously everybody either goes to the game itself or they're going to the, bank bars and restaurants and whatever else to go soak in the fact that it's Opening.
01:20:47
Speaker 2: Day.
01:20:47
Speaker 11: Yes, yes we actually met some people From boston while we were.
01:20:52
Speaker 10: There, Well boston does it as well as anybody as, well because That's Patriots, day, right, yeah and the coincided with The Boston marathon and The Red sox opener and all of.
01:21:01
Speaker 11: That The Red sox fans that were that we were chatting, with they were, like, YEAH i mean we went To Opening day last year for The Red sox and it was cool and, everything but we wanted to check this out because we've heard nothing but great things About cincinnati's Opening day and so far he said it was better than what The Red sox were. Doing and that was prior to the parade and. Everything so and then where did you go for the game? Itself, now now it's, Funny, jake we ran into these people and inadvertently they didn't know we were From. Indianapolis and then they tell us, like, yeah we're we're in. Town we're going to The reds game. Today then On, Tomorrow, friday we're making the drive over To. Indy we're going to watch The clippers and The, lakers or not The clippers And, lakers The clippers and The pacers. Play then they are going back To cincinnati to watch The reds And Red sox On. Sunday and they were, like, hey do you guys Know? Indianapolis and now we're, like, oh, well, yeah we're from. There, yes what would you like to? Know they're, like, well we're gonna drive over there during the day and just kind of need something to. Do i'm meeting a friend from lunch over. There and, after you, know after you where did you send? THEM i sent them to The Indianapolis Motor. Speedway there you, Go, eddy there you. GO i was, like you need to go check out the new. Museum it's. FANTASTIC i personally have not, been But i've heard nothing but great. Things and plus you get to hear the voice of a GUY i get to work with every single. DAY i minded Through friday giving you a. Tour that's right of the.
01:22:30
Speaker 5: Track.
01:22:30
Speaker 10: Now you also could have told him for lunch they could have gotten some patties Of, jamaica WHICH i brought in For. Nathaniel don't call Me Atticus finch. Yesterday he'd never had of it changed his. Life you've never had them, either, RIGHT i have. Not and turns out they were actually big race. Fans they say they watch Every indy car. Race, really, yes, okay fair?
01:22:46
Speaker 18: Enough?
01:22:47
Speaker 5: Yeah are they listening to the show? TODAY i have no.
01:22:49
Speaker 10: IDEA i told him. TO i, said if you listen to the show THAT i, do you need to get us some business. Cards i'll trade. You i'll get you some business cards and some. Patties your life will change. Forever by the, way this is the most stunning news of. All, Well Derek schultz is going to join us in just a. Second he is In San jose With. Purdue and yet there might be complication in connecting with him because he screwed something.
01:23:07
Speaker 5: Up, SHOCKING i, know will let you know what it is.
01:23:10
Speaker 10: Next Large pacer representation at the press conference right now to Introduce Ronald norid as the new head basketball coach At. Butler Ronald norid going to join us here on the show coming up just about twenty minutes from. Now elite eight is set at least in one half of the way With purdue and as Well arizona advancing last, Night iowa advancing as. Well, AGAIN I i, mean you hate saying, it but Like, nebraska how in the world do you have a key play down the stretch With nebraska and only have four guys on the floor and Then illinois handling business Against houston and looking pretty darn good in doing.
01:23:56
Speaker 5: It and you know they have a key player.
01:24:01
Speaker 10: That might be a, freshman but the rest of that team is pretty. Experienced speaking of, Experienced Derek, schultze you here on this program from time to, time you here on this radio station with a lot of, frequency and of COURSE i have worked with for quite some. Time has no experience in traveling in big. Cities yes he grew up In, Connecticut yes he spent time In New. York now he's stuck on A San francisco train because he got.
01:24:22
Speaker 2: On the wrong.
01:24:22
Speaker 5: Line is that, Right? Derek DID i get that? Correct?
01:24:25
Speaker 12: No i'm on the right.
01:24:26
Speaker 17: Line BUT i am very self conscious about taking phone clothes when there are lots of people. Around and that's what's happening.
01:24:33
Speaker 12: Right now on the cow.
01:24:34
Speaker 17: Train we're heading Into San francisco to go to The Giants yankees, game which would be a lot of. Fun i've always looked forward to going to that. PARK i remember what it was, Called Packard Bell. PARK i don't even know what it's called, now but we're in over there.
01:24:45
Speaker 10: Now have, you by the, way are you wearing a jacket or a? SWEATSHIRT i am wearing A t shirt with.
01:24:52
Speaker 17: Jeans it's mid sixties here in The Bay.
01:24:55
Speaker 5: Area you haven't been at that ballpark, before have?
01:24:58
Speaker 17: YOU i have never been known if that problem is that what you're, saying.
01:25:04
Speaker 5: It'll be forty five at the.
01:25:05
Speaker 10: Park enjoy the sweatshirt that you're gonna buy for seventy five bucks once you get, there because they pray on people like you and me in the. PAST i HAVE i have nine different non marked black fleece sweatshirts THAT i bought BECAUSE i was in that area Of San, francisco right on the bay with the wind whipping off of, it and didn't realize the temperature.
01:25:22
Speaker 5: Change but that's.
01:25:22
Speaker 10: Okay what you sent me, Was i'm still on the cowtrain In san FRAN i think we accidentally got on the local instead of The.
01:25:30
Speaker 5: Express is that? Right, yeah we did get.
01:25:33
Speaker 17: Accidentally so it's literally twenty seven stops from here.
01:25:37
Speaker 10: To, Okay all, right let's get into. This you know you were there last night and you saw. This what was your reaction to The purdue? Reaction if you Would in other, WORDS i just thought they seemed so mature and composed at the way they won that.
01:25:51
Speaker 5: Game but you were boots on the. Ground what did you?
01:25:54
Speaker 17: Observe, YEAH i think there was a lot of release, because let's, say Said, jake there were a lot of things that happen and in that game that were abnormal For, purdue one of those being the fact that players not Named plush And warriner went oh of twelve and. Three another one being the fact that you make your first two threes and then you miss eighteen of your next. Twenty texas a guy with a broken foot makes four. Threes you, Know, cody their backup big who had made up three the entire, year he shot seven percent from, three he makes. One it just felt like it was one of those like shooting variant, games like you throw your hands up in there and, say, man you, know what do you have to do to see one of them? Fall and they still found a way to kind of gut it out at the. End you, know it was a really physical, game was a.
01:26:37
Speaker 12: Looked up game to.
01:26:37
Speaker 17: Reviews officiating was it was a really frustrating, GAME i think for both, sides and it was a frustrating game to watch as. Well but sometimes you, know it's cliche to say survive in. ADVANCE i just felt like that was a game Where purdue had to survive a lot of bad luck in order to come out.
01:26:54
Speaker 5: Victorious The.
01:26:57
Speaker 10: Derek arizona presents different challenges than Does, texas, right AND i Thought.
01:27:01
Speaker 5: Texas look give credit To.
01:27:03
Speaker 10: Texas you can look at it and, say eleven, seed you, know it shouldn't it shouldn't have been that. Challenging that's a different team than probably what we saw in the middle of the, year and things all kind of came together for. Them But arizona's. Physicality do you Think purdue can match.
01:27:15
Speaker 17: THAT i, mean they're going to have, to right because if if they're, not they're going to get. Avalanched you, know you saw it happen with With, arkansas Where arkansas has got a bunch of athletes and they're they're you, know uh long and all of, that all all those traits that some of these teams that produ play just to a much higher level Than miami Or, texas and they just got. Bullier there was nothing that they could do about. It you, Know arizona's not particularly a three point shooting, team but they don't have to, be Because, jake they had one hundred points at what the five minute mark last. NIGHT i, mean you know that's what you're dealing with if you're. Predud, now, Look fordue on the offensive end is one of the nation's most efficient. OFFENSES i think they're confident that they can they can score and and dictate with with just about. Anybody but you, look it's the way That arizona played last night against a really Gifted arkansas, team AND i think it's got to give you some.
01:28:05
Speaker 10: Flowers by the way the game, today you're going To giants And yankees, correct get their, okay and this game is a five h five first Pitch pacific, time, right so you're going to go and spend the day In San.
01:28:17
Speaker 5: FRANCISCO i think.
01:28:19
Speaker 17: It's a it's a thirty. Times, yeah it's a one thirty Five San francisco four to thirty Five eastern.
01:28:25
Speaker 10: Time, okay that's not bad, then Because i'm looking right here and it says thirty one mile an hour wins are expected and wind chills will be in the mid forties to low. Fifties but that's at FIVE, pm so you might avoid, that so you might be in good.
01:28:38
Speaker 5: Shape.
01:28:39
Speaker 17: Yeah, see like you always root for my, downfall So i'm it's not hard to. Do you would be you would be rooting for wind chills to be in the forties or. Whatever and for, me, physal you just. Can't you can't allow me to be. Happy you, KNOW i will say, this here's where we're on the same. Wave and, LOOK i Love. Indianapolis we're raising my son In. Indianapolis every Time i'm In, CALIFORNIA i think my, Self, MAN i can, understand why would you ever? Leave you, Know it's JUST i don't, know LIKE i just love the vibe out, here the fact that the time change is obviously, different and that would take some getting used. To but the palm, trees and you, KNOW i think there's this this narrative that people like aren't. Family people have been great out. Here we've loved Downtown San. Jose everybody's awesome and, talkative And i'm really looking forward to spending the day at the ball park.
01:29:24
Speaker 5: Today, no that's.
01:29:24
Speaker 10: Great and, actually you know, what here's the revised, forecast mid fifties by end of.
01:29:30
Speaker 5: Game SO i think you'll be all.
01:29:31
Speaker 10: Right you might you might want to buy a sweatshirt when you're, there but the wind does get a little bit, much but it's. Now San francisco's, great and you know the.
01:29:39
Speaker 17: All of.
01:29:39
Speaker 10: It have you been To San francisco? MUCH i know you've been to The Bay, AREA i would, assume but have you been much To San.
01:29:44
Speaker 5: Francisco.
01:29:45
Speaker 17: Yeah so my uncle used to live In, tracy which Is Matt overton's, hometown not not too, far and so we used to come out to see him in the. Nineties BUT i have not been out To San francisco since GOT i WAS i WAS i think seventeen years. Old it was a minute.
01:29:59
Speaker 5: Ago who are you going to The are you going to the game With Mitch. Daniels i'm not going With.
01:30:04
Speaker 17: Mitch i'm going with Trumpor, peters the colleague of. Mine, Sorry President, Emeritis Governor. Daniels, yes, SORRY i should bitch an official.
01:30:14

01:30:19
Speaker 5: D it's, cool you know.
01:30:20
Speaker 17: What funny thing and this is not me trying to Be. Eddie why name dropping or anything like. That but every TIME i See President, daniels the only thing he wants to talk to me about his sports and he in the last TIME i saw, HIM i just saw him On, tuesday and he wanted to tell me these are the type of sports radio SHOWS i like to listen. To these are the type THAT i don't like to listen.
01:30:38
Speaker 12: To and that's that was our.
01:30:39
Speaker 5: Conversation how about this? Program did he mention this? PROGRAM i know you're going to.
01:30:44
Speaker 17: End up, mentioning uh that he mentioned how much he missed me being with, you but didn't mention.
01:30:51
Speaker 11: That somebody DID i get a backhand? Here what DID i, do thank.
01:30:56
Speaker 10: You that's, right somebody somebody Of mitch daniel intellectual. Capability, derek it's not surprising that sports would be the only thing that he feels comfortable talking with you, about for what it's. Worth but all, right we're gonna get To Ronald. Nored no, Offense. Derek but you, know what'd you think of The Norrid hire by the, way, yay, nay, yeah you, KNOW.
01:31:14
Speaker 17: I understand WHAT i wanted to keep it in the SAME i really like ron, norit BUT i Think butler would have been maybe better served to get some fresh eyes and perspective on the. Program but we'll see how it.
01:31:24
Speaker 10: Goes all, Right Ronald nora going to join, us coming up in just about fifteen. Minutes Derek schultz on his Way Giants yankees. Tonight it is Purdueing arizona tomorrow from The Bay. Area safe travels on the train there and by trust me by a zip, up thanks for having me on. Man see, Right Derek schultz joining us on The Java House Colebrew coffee guest. Line we come back about ten after we will catch up With Ronald, nored find out what he thought About Rick carlisle being. There Other pacers being, there but more importantly taking over The purdue. Program that conversation't.
01:31:55
Speaker 1: Obviously an unbelievable college. Game texas was. FANTASTIC i thought both teams deserved. Win trey Mount mark was big time shot.
01:32:04
Speaker 3: Clock down the, Fire mark's gonna pull. It the lefty Kiss, In he's a big, Shot taker had a big.
01:32:11
Speaker 2: Shot.
01:32:11
Speaker 4: Maker swain made a hell of a play at the end of the.
01:32:13
Speaker 5: Game sway turns a, Corner sway a clock.
01:32:18
Speaker 3: One, texas how's the tips and tied with a free.
01:32:22
Speaker 1: THROW i thought our three seniors here really hung in, there AND i thought we got good effort off our.
01:32:27
Speaker 4: Bench our guys kept their. Composure we got a good shot there at the, end.
01:32:30
Speaker 6: Eleven seconds to, go clock. Ticking here Comes Bradon smith over the timeline left.
01:32:34
Speaker 5: Or, right bakes the screen from Pauflin rin coming.
01:32:37
Speaker 6: Downhill Braden smith shooting At, banker no, good Tip Tay.
01:32:41
Speaker 7: Coffin then they tipped it into the basket with point seven to, play point seven to play free corner court shot For texas is no good and The Blue point Of makers hard headed to The elite eight thanks to the tipping From Tay pauffman around with seven tenths of a seconding.
01:33:04
Speaker 12: And honestly left the.
01:33:04
Speaker 8: HAND i thought it was, in SO i was kind of like, hopping like kind of like excitedly JUST i was, like, yeah that's. It and then it took a weird balance and it was, off and THEN i was standing on the ram And trey tipped it, perfectly AND i was just like Thank, god like Thank.
01:33:17
Speaker 9: God that one coach always says, that you, know it's not the sometimes a lot of times it's not the first shot that. Goes it's those tip ends at the end of, games like he said, that you, know my four years. Here so it's kind of cool, to you, know actually experience.
01:33:28
Speaker 5: That Matt, paynter you heard from, There Brian anderson on The Turner.
01:33:35
Speaker 10: NETWORKS i guess technically it WAS cbs last, night, right WAS cbs OR tbs BECAUSE i was going back and forth all the.
01:33:40
Speaker 5: Time that was A cbs.
01:33:41
Speaker 10: Game that was cbses, Obviously Brayden, Smith Trey, Kaufman rahn you heard from as. Well Matt painter last. Night The boilers Over Texas. Longhorns they hooked them and now they are on their way to take On. Arizona arizona does present a lot of. Challenge we talked To Rob blackman earlier in the, program you, know just the transition, play their ability to score the paint.
01:34:06
Speaker 5: And they get to the free throw. Line what Did Rob blackman point out last? Night near?
01:34:12
Speaker 10: Points, again nearly a quarter of their points last night were scored from the free throw. Line so you, know this is a team that can beat you in a multitude of, ways The Arizona. Wildcats but that's what stands now Between purdue and.
01:34:31
Speaker 5: The final.
01:34:31
Speaker 1: Four and.
01:34:33
Speaker 10: You, know when you look at this season in totality For, purdue it's it's very easy to look back at the cynicism that we all, had probably myself included when they lost three straight at one point and then three of.
01:34:49
Speaker 12: Four AND.
01:34:53
Speaker 5: I keep going back to what it was That Elliott bloom had told us On, wednesday the factor of you, know.
01:35:04
Speaker 10: They knew going into it what the game plan, was right win The Big ten compete in the, league and you drop a couple of, games and so you find, out you know, what, gosh maybe The Big ten in the regular season here has gotten away from. Us so let's just work on some. Things get them short, up and notably their defense and their perimeter. Defense AND i think the you have to look at the veteran play Of purdue and tribute and it tributes the wrong word and pin it on that veteran leadership and maturity to bounce back from that and, say you know, what one goal got away from. Us one goal away from. Us but now let's use The Big Ten tournament to not go out and say we're going to win The big ten, tournament but use The Big Ten tournament to, simply let's now see what sort of seed line we can play ourselves back into and that, goal then reassessing that goal allows you to you win The Big Ten tournament and then, boom now you're a two seed and that momentum is now carrying. You and the way they're playing and their defensive in particular their perimeter defensive pressure has picked up to the point where it's put them in this. Position but it's really going to be tested Against arizona Because arizona is, fast, Physical they know exactly where they want to get the, ball they know exactly what to do once you know, offensively whether they've got to slow down into getting in the pain where they got to. Run they can hit you in a lot of different. Ways But arizona is Unlike. Purdue arizona has some mainline players within, experience and by this point in the, year is anybody Inexperienced by this point of the, year you, know you've probably played thirty games at this, point you've played in conference, Tournaments you've played most guys that are especially if you're at An arizona that means that you are an elite level recruit that's played IN aau tournaments and you probably played in one hundred games a summer and turned right around and had you, know you win two games in the morning in AN au, tournament and you turn right, around you're playing two games that. Night so all of the factors and all of the challenges that come in with all of this seemingly are.
01:37:53
Speaker 5: Offset a bit By.
01:37:55
Speaker 10: It's not the my era college basketball, player per, Say but at the end of that, GAME i just thought it was perfectly fitting AND i thought it was perfectly symbolic and poetic that with an elite eight berth on the line and a tie, game and it comes down to it and you have three players on the floor that are about to become the winningest senior class in the history Of perdue. Basketball and you have three players on the floor that were there as freshmen When perdue was a one seed and was bounced for only the second time for a one seed in tournament history to a, sixteen and the game is on the, line and you have three players on the floor that have Won big ten, tournaments that have been to a championship, game that have had disappointment and question about, them and then have had tests and trials this. Season and two of those players have been together so, often As i've said ten thousand times, now that one of them is the most prolific assist distributor in the history of college, basketball the history of the. Game and the guy that broke the record for him is the same one that started it for him with his very first. Assist because they're still playing together and with, that even if you have moments where you're tired of somebody or you don't get, along AND i don't know that that's the, case But Elliott bloom talked about. It you, know, yeah there are some times where you, know guys do kind of get tired of being around each other all the.
01:39:35
Speaker 5: Time but in this locker. Room we all keep each other pretty, grounded pretty. Fast and.
01:39:45
Speaker 2: With all of, that.
01:39:47
Speaker 10: When it came down to, It Braden, smith with the game on the, line an elite eight berth right there and a high, game he goes and he has a lane that is, open not only because he had taken it earlier in the, game but also because he has teammates like A Trey kaufman wren that know exactly where to clear things out to make things possible because he knows exactly where that guy's going to. Go and not only does he know exactly where that guy is going to, go he has been around it enough and he has studied the game. Enough and a guy that's a philosophy major At, purdue and As Elliott bloom talked, about a guy that just sees perspectives from different. Angles he's sitting there waiting and watching and anticipating a different angle potentially in the way That Braden smith's ball is going to come off that. Rim but when it comes off the, Rim Trey Kaufman wrenn was in perfect, position and then all Of purdue gets in perfect position to get back on, defense And texas misses that shot And purdue is now forty minutes from The final, four and when it comes to playing in The final four At Lucas Oil, stadium and it comes to being in the right, position our next guest on The Java House Colbrew coffee Guest line is hoping to put His Butler bulldogs back in position to do exactly, that but playing at a final four In Lucas Oil. Stadium he knows a little about that as, well and effective a couple of hours. Ago now officially he is the head basketball coach of The Butler, bulldogs And Ronald.
01:41:19
Speaker 5: Nora joins us on the. Show. Coach first, off welcome back To Central. Indiana thank, You.
01:41:26
Speaker 12: Phil phil's great to be.
01:41:27
Speaker 20: Back great to be back At butler and be back in this great.
01:41:30
Speaker 12: State you know.
01:41:31
Speaker 10: YOU i want to get to a couple of things, here, Okay but first, off you just have AND i can see it right, there and we talked To Matt howard about. This you have a positive energy that comes through the telephone and comes through the.
01:41:46
Speaker 5: Radio where does that come?
01:41:48
Speaker 12: FROM i believe it's a gift From.
01:41:51
Speaker 20: God i've been given, this But i've had a lot of people in my life that have fostered, it starting with my, dad who passed away in two thousand and, three was just an exceptional, leader a, pastor the one that taught me about speaking, well holding my chin, up my high school, Coaches. Brad there's been so many people in my life who have poured into me and made me WHO i am.
01:42:14
Speaker 10: Today this particular Opportunity Ron and, look you have obviously coached here In, indiana and it is, Interesting you've got to. Be there can't be a lot of coaches that would be able to say that they have coached in the state Of indiana at the high school, level the college, level and the professional.
01:42:30
Speaker 5: Level, right that's.
01:42:32
Speaker 10: Right but you Know, brownsburg The, celtics, Obviously Northern kentucky THE G, league and then back with The, pacers The Atlanta hawks most, Recently how did this all come? Together can you take me through the timeline and the conversations of when it first was broached about you becoming the coach At.
01:42:47
Speaker 12: Butler, yeah it, was it was quite the.
01:42:50
Speaker 20: Process obviously bad, retiring you know, what an absolute legend of a, coach a great ambassador for college basketball.
01:43:00
Speaker 12: And For butler in.
01:43:01
Speaker 20: General and him retiring and, uh a little bit after he, Retired butler reached out with interest in me becoming the, coach and it was a it was a, long grueling process of multiple, interviews multiple conversations to share my, vision WHAT i believe about, coaching HOW i Believe butler.
01:43:22
Speaker 12: CAN uh go to new heights AND uh concluded a couple.
01:43:27
Speaker 20: Of days, ago and it's just been a great whirlwind since being back. HERE uh seen so many familiar faces and getting to meet a lot of new faces as.
01:43:36
Speaker 5: Well did you have conversation with That mada throughout the? Process?
01:43:41
Speaker 20: UH i did not speak with that throughout the, process but have been able to speak to that, since And i'm so happy that he is sticking. Around, obviously me making this transition from THE nba to college is a, transition and to have someone of coach coach modest caliber and acumen to be here and to be able to connect with and learn from is really really vital for me and making this.
01:44:05
Speaker 5: Transition what do you think are the biggest challenges of this.
01:44:09
Speaker 12: Job that's a great.
01:44:12
Speaker 20: QUESTION i think just making sure that we are really clear about the kind of people that fit at this university and at this. Program we've got to be super clear about. That we have to be unwavering about, that so that our, fans our, supporters our, students our school knows that we're bringing in people here that are going to Fit, butler fit the values Of, butler and be able to compete at the highest.
01:44:37
Speaker 10: Level and what about you Know Danny Hurley And i'm sure you know, This Ronald Ronald nord's my, guest the new head basketball coach At, Butler Danny hurley After connecticut And butler played this year At hankole kind of went to bat For Tha mada and basically, saying, Look butler's got to up the ante here in the.
01:44:52
Speaker 5: Resources it's the wild Wild. West it's a.
01:44:54
Speaker 10: Different butler than even the One Ronald nora had played. For were you aware Of danny hurley comments when he made? Them and is their truth to the fact that A butler is going to compete in that sort of. League, yes you got to get great, players but unfortunately in today's world that means a difference in resources than just simply like the tradition and the value of.
01:45:16
Speaker 20: It, YEAH i was aware of the, comments but, AGAIN i think number, one the REASON i came here is because of our, President President danko and our.
01:45:27
Speaker 12: Ad Grant Line. Decker Grant Line.
01:45:29
Speaker 20: Decker is a worker and what he's doing for this athletic department in general and this program, SPECIFICALLY i really believe.
01:45:38
Speaker 12: IN i see the.
01:45:39
Speaker 20: VISION i believe in the. Vision butler is not anywhere. Else butler is. Different and there is no question that you have to have the resources to be able to compete at the highest. Level BUT i think when you really peel back the layers of successful teams in college, basketball, yes but in sport in, general you have to have a group that is, connected that knows who they, are and that are moving in the same. Direction so everything that we do will be geared towards, that and we're going to bust our butts and make sure that that's really.
01:46:11
Speaker 10: Clear i've always wondered, this And i've asked a lot of coaches this. Question, okay when you are a player and you WERE i, mean the thing about your group and you know this between you and you Know Shelvin mack And Matt howard and you Know gordon. Everybody the thing that made you GUYS i thought so unique was you always anticipated where the ball was going to.
01:46:34
Speaker 5: Be you were always a step.
01:46:35
Speaker 10: AHEAD a lot of that maybe Is Brad stevens and a lot of that was the chemistry amongst you. Guys but basketball was very, instinctive seemingly to you as a. Player is it then difficult from a coaching standpoint because of the fact that you automatically assume that players have the same instinct that you, Did and yet that's a hard thing to teach if a guy doesn't have.
01:46:59
Speaker 5: It is that a challenge in? Coaching it can be a.
01:47:03
Speaker 20: CHALLENGE i think one thing is to not make, assumptions AND i think you, know in addition to, that really get to know your. Guys and one thing that intrigues me about coaching in college is that we get the opportunity to recruit guys and recruit guys that fit who we want to be and how we want to play those teams that we played. On that coaching staff is such a great job of being clear about identifying that that those things were in. Lockstep, now it takes, training it takes, work it takes, practice it takes, Preparation it takes all.
01:47:33
Speaker 12: Those things for that to be able to mold.
01:47:36
Speaker 20: Together but you have to start at that, point and then we have to teach our guys what that looks like to be on the same. Page we got to be very clear about that and what that looks, like and we have to just train that.
01:47:46
Speaker 12: At a high.
01:47:46
Speaker 10: Level coaching in high, school coaching in THE G, league coaching in, college coaching at THE. Nba which one do you think most authentically represents teaching the game of.
01:47:56
Speaker 5: BASKETBALL i love.
01:48:00
Speaker 12: Coach in high.
01:48:00
Speaker 20: School it was a great, experience especially in this state with the level of, COACHES i mean every. Night it was difficult THE nba because of the level of player and how much you have to be invest in that player and how important it is for them to understand that you were making them. Better the level of teaching that takes place, THERE i think is is that's probably THE.
01:48:27
Speaker 12: Nba you have to teach.
01:48:29
Speaker 17: Well you have to know you're doing because it's a.
01:48:33
Speaker 20: Players, league and if you can't have the players by into what you're, teaching it's, very very difficult to be successful in that.
01:48:40
Speaker 5: League what was your favorite thing about coaching in THE.
01:48:43
Speaker 12: Nba oh, man the.
01:48:47
Speaker 20: COMPETITION i, mean every single night you're playing against the best players in the. World AND i used to have a phrase WHEN nba players did things that ONLY nba players.
01:49:00
Speaker 12: DO i used to, say, like let's not normalize.
01:49:03
Speaker 20: That what these guys do on a day to day basis in The National Basketball association is not, normal and so to be around, that to watch guys work at that, level it's pretty.
01:49:15
Speaker 12: Special what did it mean for?
01:49:16
Speaker 5: You Ronald norad is my.
01:49:17
Speaker 10: Guest he's the new head basketball coach At, butler, where of course he was a fabulous player from eight to twenty twelve for The bulldogs and then a securitis coaching route which has led him back home To. Butler even THOUGH i realize you're native to the state That i'm going to tonight For indycarr In. Alabama but what did it mean for you to sit there at your press conference and look out amongst the crowd and see those spaces from The pacers organization that came out to support.
01:49:44
Speaker 12: You that means.
01:49:45
Speaker 20: EVERYTHING i, mean that just shows you the kind of people that are in that organization that's led By Rick Lloyd pierce being, here there were some other people in the organization that just couldn't make it today that would have been here if they could. Have and then going down to the, PLAYERS i mean to Have Tyrees haliburt and sitting here to HAVE. Tj, McConnell Isaac jacob who's on the. Staff that's what this is. About at the end of the, day we all want to. Win we want to win, championships but not everybody gets to win a. Championship so if that's the, case what is happening in the, meantime and it's the forming and forcing of great relationships that hopefully last a lifetime that really makes what we do as coaches.
01:50:26
Speaker 11: Special, ronald you went from The Indiana pacers to The Atlanta hawks in twenty twenty. Three also joining that staff with The hawks that same year Was Mike bray doing the process of talking With butler about the know your. Vision how much did you communicate With Mike brain just about how different the college landscape is to compare to THE nba with his experience At Notre.
01:50:49
Speaker 20: Dame, Yeah first of, all to be on a staff With Mike bray an absolute, legend another absolute legend of coaching was an amazing thing for a young. Coach bray AND i talked, frequently often just about coaching to college, basketball what that looks, like what it. Takes And bray has an exceptional ability to connect with, people and that was one of the things that through talking with him THAT i learned is absolutely necessary to be able to attract the kind of people that you, want attract the kind.
01:51:23
Speaker 12: Of players you. Want and we talked all the. Time we talked to the process And bray was, very very helpful in that.
01:51:29
Speaker 5: Process do you Think Quinn snyder's the most fashionable coach in THE? NBA i think he JUST i.
01:51:35
Speaker 10: WAS i Covered quinn when he was At missouri and he was a younger, guy but now that he's in THE, Nba, like he's got a little bit of style about, him doesn't He he's.
01:51:42
Speaker 12: Got a lot of style about. Him but you know, what with the style comes a lot of substance.
01:51:48
Speaker 20: Too AND i owe him so much for the opportunity to work with, him work for, him learned from.
01:51:54
Speaker 12: Him he is an absolute special.
01:51:57
Speaker 10: Coach what sort of things did you, Learn let's say a little nugget maybe from each coach that you can take, away and we'll start most recently With Quinn, Snyder, like what was there something maybe offensively that he comes up with or approach anything that you take with.
01:52:13
Speaker 12: You quinn is, very very very detail.
01:52:17
Speaker 20: Oriented every little detail matters what we're doing, offensively how we're running to, play how you should stand in a certain spot to execute the play.
01:52:27
Speaker 12: Exactly that's Something i'll.
01:52:29
Speaker 20: Take away from Him rick before, Him rick only focuses on the things that are, important AND i think that's so important in that leadership. Position And rick does a great job of empowering his staff to do great work and bring him fresh. Ideas that, way he's always staying current with what's happening and is always able to connect deeply with everybody, involved.
01:52:53
Speaker 10: The coaches that will learn from. You Ron in terms of a, staff do you have ideas yet as to who your staff will?
01:53:01
Speaker 2: BE i have.
01:53:03
Speaker 20: Ideas that's definitely something in the worst right, now and it's a really really important aspect to my transition, here and it's something THAT i got to get exactly. Right we got to have the exact right people that know this, place that understand what it takes to win at this, place and that can do a great job of building a great team as.
01:53:23
Speaker 5: Well have you seen AND i, HAVE i don't know how.
01:53:28
Speaker 10: Much here's what's funny to, Me Ronald, norrid every Coach i've ever met and every Player i've ever, interviewed all says that they're not on social, media, right which we know is not. True, Coaches i'll say it, RIGHT i don't read that, stuff and then they go on to tell you fifteen things that they're unhappy about that they just.
01:53:43
Speaker 5: Read.
01:53:44
Speaker 10: Right but there are people that AND i don't want to SAY i didn't see anybody that came out flat out and SAID i don't agree with this hire At, butler BUT i did see a lot of people that, said when Is butler going to just expand it and cast full net to see who out? There you know now that they're in the Big east, end et. Cetera were you aware of some of the i'll say cynicism in regards to your.
01:54:08
Speaker 5: HIRE i was.
01:54:11
Speaker 12: Aware of absolute.
01:54:12
Speaker 20: ZERO i actually do not have not gone on social media for, years SO i was not. Aware AND i think what's important during the process is being focused on the task at. Hand that's going to be the case. Here you, know people are going to say what they want and it's on us to block out the.
01:54:32
Speaker 12: Noise.
01:54:32
Speaker 20: Somewhere WHEN i said To rick and About, rick and focus.
01:54:35
Speaker 10: On only the things that, matter what would you say to somebody that's, like oh, MAN i wish they'd gotten somebody that, was you, know a longer tenured college head head.
01:54:42
Speaker 20: COACH i completely understand where that may come. From AND i think THAT i think that to understand, that, uh this was this was quite the process for. Me this this was Not this was not an easy process for. Me And i've had the opportunity to coach at a lot of different, levels coach a lot of different. People ALTHOUGH i haven't been a head coach in, College i've had the opportunity to be a head.
01:55:12
Speaker 12: Coach and grow as a leader and understand what my teams should look like and need to look like to be.
01:55:20
Speaker 20: Successful and SO i went through the, process AND i Appreciate President danko and our Ad Grantline decker giving me this.
01:55:28
Speaker 10: Opportunity what about roster, itself BECAUSE i, mean the reality IS i hate to say, This, ronald but you know. IT i, mean college basketball anymore part of recruiting is first to recruit your own, roster and then you recruit you know what else is out? There Right do you have an idea as to how much retention you'll have of?
01:55:45
Speaker 12: Roster, yeah we're working through that right.
01:55:47
Speaker 20: Now, obviously all the guys here came to play for Coach, mada and so this is a transition for them. Too So i've had the chance to talk to the. Team i've had a chance.
01:55:59
Speaker 12: To meet with every single. Player those meetings have been.
01:56:01
Speaker 20: Fantastic this staff did a great job of recruiting great, people and those conversations will, continue and we're Gonna we're gonna hit the ground Runn we're already hitting the ground, running And i'm looking forward to being able to build something that's, uh that's sustainable here at this.
01:56:18
Speaker 10: University do you feel that there is more pressure now just with the wins of change in college basketball in? General The Big east is a good, league obviously we know. That is there more pressure with this right now On butler basketball as a?
01:56:32
Speaker 5: Whole Or Ronald? NORRID i think the.
01:56:37
Speaker 20: Only thing THAT i can focus on is the task at, hand and you know now that's you, know building the, staff building building a, team and being very clear as the leader of this program on.
01:56:49
Speaker 12: Who we need to.
01:56:50
Speaker 20: Be all the other Stuff i'm just not quite sure of Because I'm i'm focused on the task at.
01:56:57
Speaker 10: Hand, LASTLY i want to get back into real quick If i'm not, mistaken AND i could be wrong in this run because you, Know i'm an older, guy SO i forget stuff right If i'm not. Mistaken you grew up In, alabama BUT i believe you had a family connection that kind of cemented for you to come To butler aside from the great coaching and players that were. Here didn't you have family or grandparents that lived in the area when you decided to come?
01:57:20
Speaker 5: Here or DID i make that?
01:57:21
Speaker 12: Up you're exactly.
01:57:23
Speaker 20: Right so my mom is a graduate of Short Ridge High school right, There I'm. Ridian her, mom her three, sisters her brother all live.
01:57:32
Speaker 12: Here In, Indy.
01:57:33
Speaker 20: Okay so it was A i grew up coming To indy and seeing them and coming Around, butler so to come here as a student athlete was quite an easy.
01:57:42
Speaker 10: Transition it was great to have family around, well and so with, THAT i wanted to just give you the opportunity of. THIS i think all of, us and including you, know young people that are going to play basketball At butler are young people that you're going to try to get to come To. Butler you, know all of us sometimes have to look back at our seventeen year old self and remind ourselves of what our goals were in order to reinvigorate from time to time or to just capture where it is that we. Are And i'm curious just how often you allow yourself to reflect while you have goals ahead of you on what it. Means shortridge is a proud. School people that went to Short ridge are very proud of the fact that they went to Short. Ridge and for your mom to see your, accomplishment for your father to look down from above after losing you, know or is life cutting SHORT i should, say, dude to pancreatic cancer you, know some twenty three years, ago and your, grandparents all of. It what does it mean for you now to be able to represent all of that in what is one of the highest jobs within athletics in this.
01:58:46
Speaker 12: City that means. EVERYTHING i, mean it means.
01:58:51
Speaker 20: Everything WHO i am today is not possible without all those people that you, name experiences that all those PEOPLE i brought to my, life you, know with my, grandparents my grandmother, here my dad passing away WHEN i was just thirteen years, old watching my mom go through, that having to go through that, myself having great high school coaches that poured into. Me this is not a day of celebration for. Me this is really a celebration of everyone who's pourn into, me including all the people that are here at This Butler university that made me WHO i, am and SO i am grateful for. That and now that includes my, Wife, danielle that includes my four, Kids, Avery, Kai, jude And. Campbell i'm really really grateful for all those people in my.
01:59:44
Speaker 5: Life, COACH i appreciate.
01:59:47
Speaker 10: It we Had Matt howard on as soon as you were, hired and one of the things we were talking about and just reliving the glory, days if you, will and you, KNOW i told him still he laid the greatest screen in the history of, basketball and he, said you the thing about that screen that was laid For Gordon hayward to get that shot, Off he said it was robotic because we had gone through that so many times and we had practiced even that to the point WHERE i knew exactly instinctively what to. Do AND i do think for a lot of, people one of the instincts of what to do for basketball was to bring you back. Home AND i know a lot of people are excited about. IT i certainly wish you the best of, luck and we look forward to continuing to have you on here on the.
02:00:25
Speaker 12: Program thanks so, MUCH i appreciate.
02:00:28
Speaker 2: It Go.
02:00:29
Speaker 10: Dogs Ronald nora joining us the new head basketball coach for The Butler, bulldogs and of course comes by way of The Atlanta, hawks The, pacers The hornets as, well The Long Island, Nets Northern, kentucky The Boston celtics Under Brad, stevens the main red clause In Brownsburg High. School so a long journey here in terms of. Coaching it's A friday bottom of the.
02:00:50
Speaker 5: Hour you know what that.
02:00:51
Speaker 10: Means it is time for A Franciscan health feel, good good for the Hard, friday and just pointing out sometimes those that don't get necessarily all the headline in basketball and a couple of them to talk about of what's upcoming this weekend That i'll get to next bottom of the two o'clock hour on A. Friday you know what that, Means time for A Franciscan, health feel, good good for the Heart. Friday brought to you by the great folks At Franciscan health and The Franciscan Health. FOUNDATION i continue to have people say to me that they got a heart, scan and you, know oftentimes it's just a peace of mind they got of knowing that the calcium build up within the heart was that they had a good score and a good. Result others, saying, listen you KNOW i went in and found out THAT i got to make some, changes OR i got to go into, medication or in one person's, case you, KNOW i got to go in and get a stint and be. Proactive that's the important thing about heart. Health you know you've heard the ads on this radio. Station think about. It you, Know i'm getting ready to drive. Tonight we're driving down To, Birmingham Michael young AND.
02:02:00
Speaker 12: I and.
02:02:03
Speaker 10: You wouldn't get on the road for that sort of a drive if you thought maybe the engine of the car wasn't running. Great and you, know your heart's your engine and you want to make sure that it's running. Well the forty nine dollars affordable heart scan From Franciscan, health number one heart program In indiana for cardiology by health, grades number one In indiana for interventional coronary care is of Course Franciscan health and their commitment forty nine dollars is obviously that's something that you can self, prefer you can pay out of. Pocket it's a non invasive heart, Scan so you go in and you know they're not putting you out or anything like. That you're talking ten or fifteen minutes and you get then a, score a readout of your, heart the calcium build up within, it and a heart health risk assessment with. It we tell a lot of stories AND i share along and pass, along AND i appreciate those that tip me off to different things that are stories of kind of off the beaten path in the world of. Sport with our feel, good good for The Heart, friday and that is in fact the case of a story that caught my eye this week THAT i thought was really well done by our Friend Kyle neednripp from The Indianapolis.
02:03:11
Speaker 5: Star but.
02:03:13
Speaker 10: It's about the behind the scenes sometimes and in sport and in school in, particular it's. Tough you, know high school sports can be tough because you have a wide separation sometimes between the best and the worst, players and you have a number of kids that go into, it say out of the eighth, grade when you get into high. School and those of you with kids know What i'm talking. About your child may be dominant through middle school and maybe they you, know physically, matured they went through, puberty at a younger, age and then everybody catches up to, them and you're kind of caught behind, that and it's difficult to make up that. Gap or it may be that you simply as a, student as a, players as an, athlete have a love of, sport you love being around teammates and all of those, things but you just don't have the, speed the, skill the, size quite, frankly especially in today's world of. Sport AND i go back to a story That i'll never, forget AND i thought it was a really and this is what high school athletics is all. About and THE ihsaa talks about you learn lessons beyond just.
02:04:25
Speaker 3: The.
02:04:26
Speaker 10: Scoreboard AND i recall WHEN i was a sophomore in high school and we had a player in my high school.
02:04:33
Speaker 5: Two years ahead of me that was a Legit DIVISION i.
02:04:36
Speaker 10: Prospect now we didn't have rivals rankings back, then but probably legitimately a top fifty to seventy five recruit nationally who went on to become part Of John caliperry's first ever recruiting class At.
02:04:49
Speaker 5: UMAs Tony barbie was his.
02:04:51
Speaker 10: Name and when you are an elite level basketball player like, that, everybody especially the younger players really look up to that. PLAYER i kind of set the tone in the trend of practices and workouts and things like. That AND i remember we in the off season used to have to run outside around the north side Of indianapolis a part of the conditioning getting ready for basketball before the weather.
02:05:14
Speaker 5: Turned And Tony.
02:05:15
Speaker 10: Barbie one time showed up in a pair of this is really normal, now it was not. Then he had a pair of basically under, leggings like under armour type leggings underneath his basketball shorts to run. In and no one else had, them no. One and so we showed up on the second, day and now there were two people wearing those. Leggings one Was Tony barbie and the other was a guy WHO i always had a tremendous amount of respect for Named Bob. Warner And Bob warner was the manager for the basketball. Program but he saw That Tony barbie was wearing those, leggings so he did the same. Thing AND i think there were a lot of guys that probably kind of snickered about, it, like, yeah the manager guys like doing what the elite level five star guys doing, Right and Yet Tony barbie actually kind of set the tone to everybody of, no, man Like, bob that's, cool you, know like where'd you get? Those and kind of brought him. In and when you're a senior and a, sophomore there's not a lot of dialogue, between, Right but he kind of Brought bob in in a way of sending the message to the rest of us that were within the program as. Players, look, Man bob's in here doing the things you guys are, doing And bob's in here doing, it maybe even with a better dedication or replicating from the top what he is seeing to become better at what he's doing and to be a part of what we're doing and buy in and trying to also set the tone even though he was the manager and not the, Player and it sent literally this message amongst the rest of us of, like you know, what.
02:06:53
Speaker 5: That's our.
02:06:54
Speaker 10: Guy he might not be on the, floor But bob's our. Guy and THEN i think it also set the tone and the message to all of us at a young age that just Because Bob warner was in the box score and wasn't getting in the game didn't mean that he and his actions and his commitment didn't have the same ability to set tone and trend as Did. Tony and that's one of the little things in life that you learned through high school sports that MAYBE i wouldn't have grasped. Otherwise and maybe even WHEN i was an immature and arrogant knucklehead at, sixteen it took longer for that to truly sink in for, me but it. Did And i've always had a great deal of respect for not only the commitment That Bob warner, did but the commitment that all student managers do in, sport because when you think about the early morning drive to practice in the winter time when it doesn't the sun doesn't even come up till seven point, thirty and yet the coach schedules shoot around at six am on A. Saturday there's a reason for that, oftentimes and the guys that are able to then go out and hear their name called On friday night and get people to cheer for him during the, games they get payoff for being there at that. Time they get payoff on AND i assume kids still do this The friday of game, day when you get dressed up and you wear a tie to school that, day or your uniform or your sweatsuit and kids within the hallways know you're on the basketball. Team the managers don't always get that, Payoff they don't get that pat on the, back except for At Mount. Vernon this, Weekend Mount vernon Of, fortville right here on the northeast side Of, indianapolis is going to be playing for the four to aight state championship Against Crown. Point and when they do, so it Is Luke earle who's going to produce in his teammates that will get their name on television and will get their name in the box, score But Gabe rose will get his name and his likeness on A t shirt because that's what they've done At Mount vernon to pay tribute to the guy that is the one that is always making sure that when players come out of the, game there's a fresh bottle of water there for, them when a guy there's a towel there for. Them, immediately when those guys get to practice at seven twenty in the morning and need somebody to make sure they're getting, taped there's that guy that's there to do that for, them and his name Is. Gaybros And mount And vernon recognizes, that not just recognizes it to the point of making him feel like part of the team by putting him on A t, shirt but also the fact that he's going to be doing the same For Luke erdle At, purdue and As Luke erdle goes To purdue and it's probably going to be Mister basketball and people see what he's able to, Do and As Elliott bloom had, said maybe we'll be talking About Luke erle doing things At purdue in three or four years Like trey Kaupman ren Or Braden smith Or Fletcher lawyer are doing for The boilers. Now but with that comes that familiarity of having the guy that is the one that's right there off to the side to do whatever needs to be done to. Win and that, person that, player that role is just as important as anybody that shows up at the box. Score And Mount vernon has it In Gay. Bros And Crown point has it in their student, managers And, Cathedral New Haven, Park, Heritage, Westview, triton Bar, reeve all of them that are playing this weekend for a state title have that person waiting in the. Wings AND i remember Seeing waldron when they won With Jason delaney as their head, coach at the, time and they had a guy on the sidelines Named Ralph lux who had long been a staple At Waldron High. School and Because Ralph lux was a special education student at the time that he became a student manager when his time as a student was. Complete he puts so much of his heart and soul Into waldron basketball that they allowed him to be a student manager well into his. Adulthood and Even Ralph lux got to cut down part of the nets well past his days as a. Student because that's what the behind the scenes people are all. About and it's not even about there helping out the young people in terms of giving him a tower of, water but it's about the fact that even when they're fifty three years, old they will see the little lessons That Bob warner taught. Me and so when you go to the game and you watch At Gambridge Field house this weekend and you See gabe or the other student managers that are out there doing their, part just remember you might think that they're out there for just a fleeting moment on the, court but they're providing a lesson that young people will carry with them for a very long time and making it possible for for of those schools to win a title and another four to still get a.
02:11:25

02:14:22
Speaker 2: It, yeah he was.
02:14:24
Speaker 21: GREAT i know things have changed a great deal with that in, mind but what hasn't would be the taste and the understanding of what people want And he was always a guy that, would you, know go to the corporate entities or the bosses and, say, hey this is what, works and actually get them to turn things and make sure that it. Worked i've always had a great deal of admiration for what he accomplished over at that other building because it was it was truly remarkable when that Building jake was.
02:14:51
Speaker 2: Humming you know that to be true before really you AND i both that building was.
