ABOUT THIS EPISODE
In this deeply moving, raw, and politically charged episode of Provocateurs, we sit down with veteran content creator, activist, and former politician John. Navigating the digital space for over 15 years, John has transitioned from the early days of YouTube to becoming a leading voice for the UK's LGBTQ+ community. In this conversation, John pulls back the curtain on the alarming cultural regression facing queer people today and shares the terrifying personal toll of visibility.
John details his historic run as the first openly gay councilor elected in Ballymena, Northern Ireland—and how that milestone devolved into a psychological nightmare when a malicious, targeted internet smear campaign falsely linked him to horrific local crimes. He opens up about the devastating impact it had on his mental health, ultimately forcing him to resign and flee back to his home network in Liverpool. John also shares an intimate, heartbreaking look at his grief following the sudden death of his close friend, the iconic Liverpool drag legend James ("The Vivian"). He details how he channeled that loss into organizing a massive city-wide vigil and advocating for addiction awareness regarding the rising crisis of ketamine complications.
