ABOUT THIS EPISODE
What exactly is a transitional champion?
It’s one of pro wrestling’s most commonly used terms—and one of its most commonly misused.
This week on Pro Wrestling Forever, Professor Degree and Blade Daily dig into the history of transitional champions: wrestlers who won a championship because their real job was to get that belt from one person to another.
And no, “he had a short title reign” doesn’t automatically count.
From Stan Stasiak and Ivan Koloff to Sgt. Slaughter, Raven and plenty more, the fellas examine some of wrestling history’s most famous temporary kings. Why were they chosen? Who were they replacing? Who was waiting on the other side? And which supposed transitional champions don’t actually fit the definition at all?
Along the way, we travel through WWE/WWF, WCW, ECW and decades of wrestling history to figure out how promoters have used transitional champions—and why some seemingly forgettable title reigns were actually crucial pieces of much bigger stories.
🏆 What really defines a transitional champion?
📼 Who are the best examples in wrestling history?
⏳ Does the length of a title reign even matter?
🤔 And have wrestling fans used the term so loosely that it’s starting to lose all meaning?
Professor Degree and Blade Daily have the championship lineage, historical context, strong opinions, and an entirely reasonable amount of concern about Stan Stasiak’s nine-day WWWF Championship reign.
It’s Pro Wrestling Forever: celebrating wrestling history, one wonderfully weird detour at a time.
