ABOUT THIS EPISODE
In this episode of Primarily Scripture, Cindy Young explores how to find practical applications when studying scripture – moving beyond doctrines and principles to real, personal action in daily life. Using Elder Bednar’s Venn diagram and insights from For the Strength of Youth, this episode helps you understand that applying gospel truths is deeply personal and always your own responsibility.

Don't forget the parable of the snowball: listening to someone else talk about the gospel is like having snowballs thrown at you. Reading the scriptures is like making your own snowball. Taking the time to search, ponder, and pray about what you've read is like rolling the snowball around and around so that it grows and grows. So don't just listen to me - please go read for yourself so your knowledge and testimony can grow and grow!!

TRANSCRIPT 🔗
00:00:00.108 --> 00:00:03.399
We don't read our scriptures just for the sake of reading.
00:00:03.700 --> 00:00:07.064
There are three main things to learn about when you read scriptures.
00:00:07.326 --> 00:00:10.763
They are Jesus Christ, doctrine, and principles.
00:00:11.099 --> 00:00:21.672
Now, we dedicated several episodes a few months back to finding Jesus, and two weeks ago, we discussed doctrine- which for our purposes we define as eternal, unchanging truth.
00:00:21.763 --> 00:00:27.672
And then just last week, we discussed principles, which are the guidelines we use for making choices- what we do.
00:00:27.972 --> 00:00:33.935
That includes things like faith, hope, charity, love, tithing, ministering, fasting… It goes on and on.
00:00:34.354 --> 00:00:37.682
These are the concepts for how we try to live.
00:00:38.136 --> 00:00:46.363
Today, however, we are talking about something that takes these important concepts and makes them relevant to you right now today.
00:00:46.808 --> 00:01:02.753
I'm Cindy Young, and this is Primarily Scripture Today's tip, like nearly every tip I share, can be used for any kind of gospel study, not just scripture study.
00:01:03.107 --> 00:01:08.808
And I'll get into it in just a minute, but first, a quick recap of what we talked about the last few weeks.
00:01:08.899 --> 00:01:15.225
Do you remember that we talked about the Venn diagram that Elder Bednar shared in his book called "Increase in Learning"?
00:01:15.653 --> 00:01:18.617
It's kind of a grid of overlapping circles.
00:01:18.698 --> 00:01:28.599
The basic doctrines are in the overlapping circles in the top row, and then the middle row has principles that come from and are supported by those doctrines.
00:01:28.989 --> 00:01:33.036
And then finally, there's the bottom row, and this is applications.
00:01:33.216 --> 00:01:45.608
You'll remember that the doctrines explain the why behind what we do, principles are what we are striving for, and applications are the breakdown of how we put them into action.
00:01:46.308 --> 00:01:53.917
If you diligently seek, you absolutely will find doctrine and principles through the teachings and stories in the scriptures.
00:01:54.362 --> 00:01:57.545
And of course, all of it points us to Jesus Christ.
00:01:58.007 --> 00:02:05.844
So if you want to review the specifics of how to find doctrine and principles and Jesus, you can go back and re-listen to those prior episodes.
00:02:06.362 --> 00:02:09.944
But how do you find the applications?
00:02:10.245 --> 00:02:12.271
That is what we are talking about today.
00:02:13.878 --> 00:02:18.296
It used to be that the church gave us very clear expectations about certain things.
00:02:18.625 --> 00:02:24.479
Things like drinking caffeinated sodas, clothing guidelines, ministering expectations.
00:02:24.915 --> 00:02:42.406
And this meant that members of the church got pretty good at making a mental checklist of things they had to do in order to be a, quote,"good member of the church." We have been seeing a shift in how these topics are approached, both by members individually and the official publications from the church.
00:02:42.724 --> 00:02:50.933
For example, the For Strength of Youth guidebook used to list many dos and don'ts, which remember, those are applications.
00:02:51.425 --> 00:02:57.969
And then several years ago, that book was revamped, and it focused more on doctrine and principles.
00:02:58.288 --> 00:03:06.860
Now, it has been reformatted again, and it also doubles as a curriculum for the youth program, and it includes invitations and promised blessings.
00:03:07.925 --> 00:03:10.834
Let's look at this book real quick because I really, really love it.
00:03:11.360 --> 00:03:25.296
Right before chapter one, there's a section titled Make Inspired Choices, and the first paragraph in that section says this: " In For the Strength of Youth, you will find the teachings of Jesus Christ and His prophets.
00:03:25.742 --> 00:03:37.909
With these truths as your guide, you can make inspired choices that will bless you now and throughout eternity." Do you see how Elder Bednar's Venn diagram lines up with these sentences?
00:03:38.373 --> 00:03:41.927
There are teachings, those are the truths, right?
00:03:42.127 --> 00:03:46.145
That's our top circle, and they will guide you as you make choices.
00:03:46.200 --> 00:03:47.383
Isn't that what our principles are?
00:03:47.736 --> 00:03:49.728
They're the guidelines helping us as we choose.
00:03:50.419 --> 00:03:54.674
And then the choices themselves are left up to you.
00:03:54.710 --> 00:03:59.491
How you apply these teachings, or not, is completely up to you.
00:04:00.228 --> 00:04:01.764
Let's read a little more from this book.
00:04:02.019 --> 00:04:13.019
If we go down a few paragraphs, it says,"The purpose of For the Strength of Youth is not to give you a yes or no about every possible choice you might face.
00:04:13.465 --> 00:04:23.291
Instead, the Lord is inviting you to live in a higher and holier way- a life focused on eternal truths and the Lord's promised blessings.
00:04:23.682 --> 00:04:25.255
This is His way.
00:04:25.701 --> 00:04:27.745
This guide will teach you about His way.
00:04:28.100 --> 00:04:30.646
It explains truths He has revealed.
00:04:31.137 --> 00:04:42.619
Make these truths your guide for making choices- big choices like making covenants in the temple and serving a mission, as well as daily choices like how to treat people or how to spend your time.
00:04:43.100 --> 00:04:46.446
While others can help you, your spiritual growth is personal.
00:04:46.682 --> 00:04:50.182
It is your responsibility." Don't you love that?
00:04:51.055 --> 00:04:52.283
What stood out to you there?
00:04:52.574 --> 00:04:56.536
Did you catch that it said this isn't about a list of yes and no answers?
00:04:57.036 --> 00:05:03.709
Did you notice the phrase, "Live in a higher and holier way, focused on eternal truths and the Lord's blessings"?
00:05:04.464 --> 00:05:10.918
What about this phrase, and this is super important for what we're talking about today, "Your spiritual growth is personal.
00:05:11.165 --> 00:05:23.564
It is your responsibility." So now that we've reviewed those, what do you think the answer is if we were to talk about how can you find applications when you study the scriptures?
00:05:24.500 --> 00:05:29.391
What is the best way to apply the doctrines and principles of the gospel in your own life?
00:05:30.545 --> 00:05:39.949
Especially after we reviewed those paragraphs, it seems pretty clear that we probably won't find a cut-and-dry list of dos and don'ts in the scriptures.
00:05:40.125 --> 00:05:41.206
They're just not there.
00:05:41.387 --> 00:05:42.468
Why do you think that is?
00:05:42.822 --> 00:05:44.860
And why do you think that's relevant?
00:05:45.569 --> 00:05:47.596
Because we still need these applications.
00:05:47.596 --> 00:05:53.778
We need to be thinking about what to do, how we're going to actually put these principles into action.
00:05:55.286 --> 00:05:59.004
But if nobody is telling you what to do, then how are you going to figure it out?
00:05:59.704 --> 00:06:01.860
Let's look at this week's reading for a minute.
00:06:02.141 --> 00:06:04.769
Turn with me to 2 Chronicles chapter 15.
00:06:05.668 --> 00:06:14.387
In verse two, the prophet tells King Asa that if he and the people of Judah will seek the Lord and try to follow him, that they will be blessed.
00:06:14.668 --> 00:06:17.060
So what do they decide to do?
00:06:17.233 --> 00:06:19.233
How do they apply that promise?
00:06:19.605 --> 00:06:24.451
Let's read verse 12, and this is on my free worksheet this week, or you could just open up your Bible.
00:06:24.987 --> 00:06:37.105
Verse 12 says this, "And they entered into a covenant to seek the Lord God of their fathers with all their heart and with all their soul." Did the prophet tell them to make a covenant?
00:06:37.670 --> 00:06:43.187
No, he told them to seek the Lord, meaning try to follow His commandments and do things His way.
00:06:43.887 --> 00:06:53.379
In some of the other verses that didn't fit on the worksheet, it talks about how the king and the people got rid of the idols, and they renewed the altar and made sacrifices.
00:06:53.896 --> 00:06:59.216
And they decided, all on their own it appears, that they wanted to make a covenant.
00:06:59.605 --> 00:07:01.043
And what was that covenant?
00:07:01.733 --> 00:07:07.797
They covenanted to seek Him with all their heart and all their soul.
00:07:08.142 --> 00:07:09.415
Don't you just love that?
00:07:10.478 --> 00:07:18.105
They took the truth that blessings are tied to obedience, and they decided that those blessings seemed worth it to them.
00:07:18.516 --> 00:07:24.706
They exercised their faith, and they made a plan for how they would follow through, and then they did it.
00:07:25.059 --> 00:07:33.019
If the to-do list was the only important thing, then the church probably wouldn't have taken away the specific guidelines that we had 20, 30, 50, 100 years ago.
00:07:33.663 --> 00:07:46.125
And this is because, how I live the gospel in my own life today is different from how I lived it in the past, and it's different from how you and every other person may choose to live it.
00:07:46.752 --> 00:07:55.370
For example, for some people, applying the principle of prayer this week might look like saying a prayer before they eat their breakfast as they drive to work.
00:07:55.879 --> 00:08:01.887
For other people, it might mean saying a prayer in their head a few times a day as they face their challenges.
00:08:02.406 --> 00:08:06.043
For someone else, it might mean praying before bed instead of going straight to sleep.
00:08:06.651 --> 00:08:14.338
And none of these specific ways that you might pray or add prayer to your day are, better or worse or more important than others.
00:08:14.783 --> 00:08:19.538
It's just that different people are going to apply this principle… in different ways.
00:08:20.055 --> 00:08:29.310
So if you are waiting for me to tell you what to do this week- or any other week really- you are going to be very disappointed by what I say next.
00:08:29.964 --> 00:08:34.865
I can never, ever tell you how to apply the gospel in your own life.
00:08:35.437 --> 00:08:46.937
Your job is to learn the doctrines, learn the principles, learn about Jesus Christ as much as you can, and then pray about how you can apply those principles and doctrines.
00:08:47.620 --> 00:08:55.655
Ponder it and listen to your heart and the whisperings of the Spirit, and make your own choices and make your own plan and follow through.
00:08:56.198 --> 00:08:58.871
Do you remember what it said in For the Strength of Youth book?
00:08:59.363 --> 00:09:04.235
Your spiritual growth is personal, and it is your responsibility.
00:09:04.761 --> 00:09:17.344
In April, 2024, Elder Dale G. Renlund gave a talk in general conference titled "The Powerful Virtuous Cycle of the Doctrine of Christ." And he talked about how living the doctrine, which isn't that what we're talking about?
00:09:17.352 --> 00:09:20.552
How we are applying the truths and principles of the gospel?
00:09:21.235 --> 00:09:24.688
That living the doctrine needs to be done in three ways.
00:09:25.144 --> 00:09:28.761
Number one, repeatedly, which means doing it over and over again.
00:09:29.417 --> 00:09:35.052
Number two, iteratively, which means keep getting a tiny bit better every time you try again.
00:09:35.534 --> 00:09:43.716
And number three, intentionally, meaning we don't just do things because they're a habit, but that we are actively choosing how we will live.
00:09:44.081 --> 00:09:54.527
President Nelson and other general authorities have repeatedly asked us to, quote, "Do the spiritual work" that is necessary to learn how the Holy Ghost speaks to us.
00:09:54.798 --> 00:09:56.544
Do the work to build your testimony.
00:09:56.544 --> 00:10:01.772
Do the spiritual work to build a firm foundation, to receive revelation, to see miracles.
00:10:02.081 --> 00:10:06.962
Do the spiritual work to change your hearts and to become more like Jesus.
00:10:07.289 --> 00:10:09.053
It is work.
00:10:09.445 --> 00:10:17.226
You have to put the effort in, or you will not see and feel the blessings and the promptings that the Lord really, really wants to give you.
00:10:18.226 --> 00:10:22.727
Now, even though it is work, it doesn't take a lot to start the process.
00:10:23.037 --> 00:10:24.846
Here are the steps that you need to take.
00:10:25.427 --> 00:10:30.519
Be sincere as you ponder, and ask for guidance on what you should strive to do next.
00:10:31.191 --> 00:10:34.119
Then act on the ideas that come to you.
00:10:35.128 --> 00:10:36.054
It's that simple.
00:10:36.500 --> 00:10:36.946
Did you hear it?
00:10:37.110 --> 00:10:37.809
Let me repeat it.
00:10:38.037 --> 00:10:43.900
First of all, ponder what you're going to do, and be sincere as you ponder.
00:10:44.437 --> 00:10:50.091
Ask for guidance on what you should strive for next, and act on the ideas that come.
00:10:50.827 --> 00:11:03.946
You might be unsure if it's your own idea or the Spirit telling you what to do, but as long as it is in line with the doctrine and principles of the gospel, then it actually doesn't matter if it's your own idea, or if it came directly from the Spirit.
00:11:04.563 --> 00:11:15.773
In fact, the Spirit will often say to me,"You already know what you need to do." And then I say, "I know, I know." And then I move forward and act on what I already know needs to be done.
00:11:16.072 --> 00:11:26.091
And that's one of the ways that the Spirit works, by saying, "Don't you know this already?" The Lord wants us to put forth the effort, and sometimes he wants us to move forward with our own good ideas.
00:11:26.254 --> 00:11:39.653
As you discover truths and principles in the scriptures, I hope you will be very, very intentional about looking for ways that you can get better, even if it's just a teeny tiny bit better as you strive to live them.
00:11:40.163 --> 00:11:42.100
Heavenly Father wants to help you.
00:11:42.472 --> 00:11:54.518
And remember that he doesn't command us to do anything that he won't help us to accomplish, and this absolutely includes applying gospel doctrine and principles in our lives every single day.
00:11:55.018 --> 00:12:00.118
So pray for his help, think about it, be sincere, and and move forward.
00:12:00.591 --> 00:12:04.700
He has said, "Ask and you shall receive.
00:12:00.591 --> 00:12:15.945
Seek and you shall find. Knock and it will be opened unto you." I don't know how or when the Lord will answer your prayers, I don't know what He might ask you to work on this week, but I know that He keeps His promises.
00:12:16.318 --> 00:12:24.100
I also know that the point of scripture study is not just to increase our knowledge, but it is to become.
00:12:24.490 --> 00:12:33.318
Heavenly Father wants us to become the very best version of ourselves that we can, and Jesus Christ has invited us to become like him.
00:12:33.716 --> 00:12:45.508
Having a to-do list will be less effective at helping you become your best self, unless it is rooted in the doctrines and principles of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
00:12:45.943 --> 00:12:47.926
So learn everything you can about Jesus.
00:12:48.235 --> 00:12:50.298
Learn the doctrines as much as you can.
00:12:50.662 --> 00:12:55.097
Find those principles, and then decide how you will put them in action.
00:12:55.389 --> 00:12:59.153
Because without the action, it's just knowledge floating around in your brain.
00:12:59.366 --> 00:13:15.812
When you put it to work, then you can become, and being able to return to live with Heavenly Father someday is the point of the whole plan, not just of scripture study, but it's the point of everything! Come back next week and we'll do more tips and tricks to improve your scripture study.
