00:00:00
Speaker 1: Mini camp's done. Now, just how much progress do you feel like the team made this week?
00:00:04
Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that over the course of the offseason we've improved, for sure, especially in the areas in which that you can improve in this time, I think we've taken steps in the right direction in terms of the past game specifically, I think offensively past pro is always challenging during this time, but I think the amount of reps that we accumulated throwing the football this spring was pretty cool. To see guys making plays in one on one situations, the timing and spacing.
00:00:38
Speaker 3: I think our defensive.
00:00:39
Speaker 2: Coverage has improved, guys getting a little bit more confident to come up and challenge people. And then again, the rush is very difficult to examine during this time, but I think Trayvon Walker showed up in a big way, especially when we got into some competitive situations doing what I challenged them with, which was to dominate, and through the first two days of mini camp he didn't lose many reps, so I think we got better.
00:01:07
Speaker 4: I would important have rep's been this time here for guys like Caleb and Jalen McLeod who maybe didn'tet last year.
00:01:12
Speaker 5: Yeah.
00:01:12
Speaker 6: Huge.
00:01:12
Speaker 2: I mean, those guys haven't been on the grass for so long, so it's valuable time. It's it's gonna be a huge jump I think for those guys to come from this time to training camp. I think we'll hopefully see another step from those guys. If they're gonna be people that are gonna help us play this season, I would imagine we'll see another jump because so much at this was just about getting them back out into colin uh, making checks, calls, adjustments, and then just lining up and playing football. So hope hopeful that those guys take another step this this summer.
00:01:53
Speaker 4: And you've talked about some guys practical confidences. Buster won those guys that just since you've been here kind of seen that confidence take over.
00:01:58
Speaker 2: Yeah, he's always kind of played and practiced with confidence. There's areas in which he can continue to improve, but I think you know, look, we signed him to a deal and he comes out and just is him. He's practiced the same way. He's approached the meetings, in practice and games the same, you know, the same way since I've been here the whole time. So he's consistent, he's a pro. I think we'll see another step from Buster this year in terms of confidence, especially in the red zone.
00:02:32
Speaker 7: I know you're usually like.
00:02:34
Speaker 3: What you see from Trevor, let anything stand out about I think that.
00:02:38
Speaker 2: I mean, I don't know how many picks he actually threw, but I gotta believe it was under five throughout all the OTAs in mini camp. So I think while trying to challenge himself and our receivers more with down the field passing, challenging him to try new things of concepts and fit some place, you know, fit some throws into maybe windows you would otherwise take a check down in. While balancing that, I thought he did a really nice job taking care of the football, running the whole operation, managing the protections and some of the concepts on the field. Yeah, I'm pleased with with Trevor Spring absolutely having.
00:03:23
Speaker 5: John Hussey and an officiating crew out here. How does that help? What else are they doing off the field here.
00:03:27
Speaker 2: Yeah, they've done. I mean, I don't know how many better there are than him. You know, I've been fortunate to be around John for the last three days, and you talk about a pros pro and not just the experience that he has, but helping me out with some communication to the players They did multiple presentations to our players, our rookies, our staff, and they sat in on all the position meetings so they're able to answer questions live for the coaches and players. And then for me, it was like talking to about all right, the controllable penalties versus the non controllables. What can we control? And it comes down to either, you know, coaching it to happen or allowing it to happen. And so some of that stuff we can control, some of it we can't. So it's been great to have those guys. He's got a great crew and I think he's one of the best out there. It's easy today, boy oh wow.
00:04:22
Speaker 3: Yeah.
00:04:22
Speaker 7: First, when I asked about the unsung heroes of this lineup from this past year, one of the first names that came to mind for Trevor was yourself. Considering what you were able to accomplish on such short notice, what are your expectations for one another coming into this season?
00:04:37
Speaker 6: Just to learn as much as I can, honestly, so they don't have to sit there and babysit me and hold my hand throughout Dolphins. So I just want to learn as much as I can, and honestly, how the other guys played great, so I can just support them for that's really all my expectations.
00:04:49
Speaker 8: Are you been around.
00:04:51
Speaker 7: Different teams this time of year.
00:04:53
Speaker 1: What stands out of what you guys were able to get done the last chapter.
00:04:56
Speaker 8: Or four leaks?
00:04:59
Speaker 6: I mean, I would say the quality of players. I would say, I mean, cause they all we all know they had talents. It's a matter of working hard when you get to the league. And I feel like all our quality players really put that work in this off season and they showed when we hit the grass. So it was fun to be out there competing every day.
00:05:14
Speaker 4: We was saying, he thinks the secondary you know, has played well for all there. So what have you kind of seen from them? He said, he thinks they didn stick you here. Have you kind of seen that competitive goodness? Yeah, I would say so. I mean I felt the honestly day they be around. I'm trying to get open, but it's pushed us to be better in our room. So hopefully we just keep having that iron and sharper iron, you know what I mean.
00:05:30
Speaker 5: So seeing the confidence of number seven continue to grow and it's showing up here on the practice field, did you see that at.
00:05:37
Speaker 3: The end of last season continued to grow for him.
00:05:39
Speaker 5: And how has he been different if it all this offseason.
00:05:42
Speaker 3: I mean he's been locked in. I think I don't like he he a smart dude.
00:05:45
Speaker 6: I don't think he's getting uugh credit for how smart he is, but he is smart individual. So I just think the longer he's around the game, the more he's in his offense, the older he gets as a man, you know, like he he's gonnantinue to get better and better. And I think when they're really all the way click for him, I really don't see how you stop him. But good luck to ever trying for what he's going.
00:06:05
Speaker 5: What does that do for the rest of you guys on offense?
00:06:07
Speaker 6: Oh, we make it. Man. We were talking about yesterday, whenever beat have a good day, the whole team have a good day, you know what I mean, like the whole team. So we all just want to keep putting that belief into him, so he know how great we think he is. And if you just half of that, we'll be Okay.
00:06:22
Speaker 4: Couple rookies in the room, what are you kind of seeing about them? And just how they've kind of gone about the business?
00:06:26
Speaker 6: Epar consistently made plays, and I think even before we hit the field, like they showed how smart they were, Like they were answering questions faster than us, So we weren't surprised when they came out here and made plays. Everybody, honestly, even down to the undrafted guys, like everybody kind of been consistent on how they catch the ball, They learn quick, they ask questions. It's been great to have him around.
00:06:45
Speaker 5: Trevor earlier in the offseason talked about, hey, he's not learning any new offense because it's already end, but they're refining at you might still be learning new offense, are you, And what is refining in the offense look like out here for you?
00:06:58
Speaker 6: Yeah, just I feel like I've been in so many different systems now, it's just understanding the verbage. I always say, like pretty much teams run the same stuff, it's just what you call it. So if I can get all the names glued down, I think that would be a big help for me. But I wouldn't say I'm learning too much. It's the same as him. I'm trying to refine it. The things I am learning that really need to hold onto those, but refining for sure.
00:07:21
Speaker 5: Like the timing routes and stuff. You haven't had an off.
00:07:24
Speaker 6: Season, so I remember that's football though, So I would say that part, the on the field part is maybe a little easier for me just just being in the classroom making sure, like I said, I get the words down so when they do call it, I don't have to stop think what's just in this offense and then go line up?
00:07:38
Speaker 3: You know, so kind of on.
00:07:40
Speaker 1: The how's your chemistry grown now with Trevor just being able to have an off season with him, to be able to go out maybe practice on your own, just.
00:07:47
Speaker 3: Things like that.
00:07:48
Speaker 6: I mean, he's more so just paying attention to him, So I would say it's moving in the right direction, Like we still finding a way to make plays.
00:07:54
Speaker 3: But the more I could.
00:07:55
Speaker 6: Pay attention to him, how he moved, how he think, what he's looking for when we run our routes, I think the better we'll be. So he's just got to keep doing this thing and I'll catch up to wherever he is.
00:08:03
Speaker 7: What ought about Trumper this.
00:08:05
Speaker 3: This offseason so far?
00:08:06
Speaker 1: You know, Williams talked about how he's he's needed to sort of know the more advanced concepts rather than just the baseline so how is he sort of going in your opinions?
00:08:14
Speaker 6: I mean, for me personally, a guy who knows the offense as well as he does, like he's from me. When I have a mistake, he could just tell me right away and I can go line up and it don't take too long. I can still kind of understand my job. So I mean that's been great for me. The way he throw the ball, like he he could tell you exactly where he's thinking, and we could tell him exactly what we's thinking. So the communication to help the leadership. He's been doing a good job this year.
00:08:38
Speaker 1: I don't know how much you've seen it, but just park how much you've thought about it, but Brian Thomas, just seeing what he's been able to do on the field, or the last few days or the last few weeks, how impress Have you been super impressed?
00:08:49
Speaker 6: But I mean I was already I was impressed with BT from a distance, So just getting here is kind of what the expectation was to him. But he just I mean it's fun watching him play, honestly, So it's just great to have him. I'm happy on our team and he helping us out.
00:09:03
Speaker 1: So dangerous is a guy like that, when he has the confidence when he's making the plays, when he's doing things consistently.
00:09:10
Speaker 6: As dangerous as he wanted to be. Honestly, I think he that type of player, Like if he decided he wanted to be great that day and he commits to it, I mean he will be great that day for sure.
00:09:19
Speaker 3: Thanks than jobs, Yes, Heath.
00:09:25
Speaker 1: Obviously, you have a bunch of new rookies this year, just in terms of what you've seen from them on special teams. You know, Liams talked about how much you guys emphasize that whenever you draft anybody, but just how you've seen the rookie class progress, It's been great.
00:09:38
Speaker 3: It's been a good offseason. Uh, they really bought in right when they got here. I think it's a you know, it's a work in progress as far as where they're at, but they're putting in the time, they're learning the drills, and that's what this offseason is about, is getting in prepped to to compete in training camp. So they've been They've done a really really good job of eying in and kind of seeing it and a lot of these guys haven't played a ton of special teams since early in their college careers, So a lot of the stuff's new. Uh, but they're getting better every day. And and to see this last you know a few you know, two weeks. Uh, they've really taken a big step, uh, you know, in their in their production.
00:10:18
Speaker 8: And it's only that he practicing.
00:10:19
Speaker 3: And pull this week.
00:10:20
Speaker 8: But in terms of where you guys envisioned him punt returner, kenny return kicks, in terms of where.
00:10:26
Speaker 3: He fits in on that side, I mean, I think he's gonna be a really really good kick returner. He can putt return as well. Uh, you know, fortunately obviously we have Parker, we have guys to putt return.
00:10:37
Speaker 2: Uh.
00:10:37
Speaker 3: But yeah, Josh has been really really good. I think in all phases. Probably the best way I said, he's Gould, I plan on playing four phases. Uh, He's gonna be a good player for us. I was excited to get to to be able to draft him. He was one of my favorites watching him. Uh so uh and and and he's showcasing what he can do, uh, not only as a receiver, but you know for me as well, how would you evaluate.
00:10:56
Speaker 8: Them, knowing Parker potentially having a little bit more of an elevated role, on offense. You don't want to lose him at that pump return or spot. But how would you evaluate that competition?
00:11:04
Speaker 3: I mean, I think, like you said, I love Parker back there. I think we'll just kind of have to see how that plays out with you know, with the roster and how that looks come week one and it maybe you know, it may be changing throughout the season. There may be games when you know we need a big play and and and he's back there, and there's other times when we'll provide a big play from somebody else. So I think Parker's back there as the part return off we can, but we're gonna make great decisions as a team, as an organization if he is the you know, he is the top target for us as he as i'd imagine he will be. You know, what does that look like for special teams. We'll figure it out. But we have plenty of guys that can return. We have a good group, So I'm confident and comfortable where we're at if it's not Parker.
00:11:45
Speaker 9: Take note the UFL sixty yard field goals four points and what do you think about that?
00:11:50
Speaker 3: I love it? Can we get that in the NFL? I would love that as our guy can do him is very very good at that stuff. You know, that'd be a cool, uh cool little bonus if you could get an extra you know, an extra point out of that. So yeah, I think it would be a be a good little interesting thing for the kickers that can do it. And you know, maybe with our guy, maybe make it a a five pointer. We can get a seventy. Let's get a seventy five pointer. I mean, it wouldn't surprise me, you know, I mean, our guy can do him. There's several kickers across the league I believe that can do him. Uh yeah, I think it could happen very easily. The guys are getting stronger and and and and and more talented as the as a year goes on. Uh And so yeah, it wouldn't surprise me, would surprise you if we did it. I mean there's a you know, any time we you know, we get to about midfield, we feel like we're in range and that and then that's the confidence we have in him. But that's the confidence he has in himself.
00:12:51
Speaker 7: At the end of the kick that everyone run it down.
00:12:54
Speaker 3: I mean, he he he had he had some long ones and warm up you know, he actually he had a seventy two yarder and warm up, so he has the leg to hit kit those long kicks. And and that's the cool part about it is, uh, we're always in range. Wait, everything changing in the NFL sucks now.
00:13:13
Speaker 9: Do you expect the league to maybe start making changes to the field goal stuff to a crossbar high? I mean that the long distance success has just kind of risen over the last couple of decades significantly.
00:13:24
Speaker 3: Do you think maybe at some point the league's.
00:13:25
Speaker 9: Gonna go higher crossbar and narrow you know something?
00:13:28
Speaker 3: Anything I don't, I don't believe. So, I mean, I think that's down the road. I think it's really cool to see these long kicks. Uh, you know, it's uh, you know, it's cool thing to see when you're seeing uh you're in field goal range, but you're on the other side of the fifty you know, like it's uh, you know, jokingly, other teams have said, is we get one first down your potential in range and so uh they see it from across the field, you know, other game management guys, they're aware of cam. Uh. And that's a that's a weapon. That's a cool thing that we can potentially be in range and and and and send them out there, you know, even on the on the other side of the fifty. Sorry, with everything again down the road and how this game changes, do you see a situation where it goes back to your eighth or ninth offensive lineman being your snapper instead of a speculist. I don't believe.
00:14:17
Speaker 5: So.
00:14:17
Speaker 3: Those guys are so talented. We're really fortunate. Ross is the best in the game. You know, obviously he's gotten to a few Pro Bowls to showcase that. But they're so talented, and it's such a precise operation. Just the one hundredth of a second makes the difference between a good kick and a block kick. So no, I don't think it's so specific. I don't believe you could ever go back to that. They're really talented and they're really good at what they do.
00:14:45
Speaker 7: I briefly highlighted it. But your specialists have started receiving the national recognition that they deserve. Seeing the flowers that Cam and Logan and Ross have received, tyb rewarding is it for you? Knowing the skill set that they possessed.
00:14:58
Speaker 3: I mean, I'm proud of those guys. You know, we were fortunate. Obviously, we came here and we had Logan and Ross uh, and then of course we add you know, we ad Cam uh and so I feel like I'm part of I feel like I'm part of the family. They're They've been great to me. But they the way you see them work every day, there's a reason why they're so talented and why they're so good. They're typically the first guys out here on the field, warming up, getting ready, prepping.
00:15:21
Speaker 2: Uh.
00:15:21
Speaker 3: They care so much about it. It's important to be great. They help each other, their brothers, they're you know, they hold each other accountable.
00:15:29
Speaker 1: Uh.
00:15:29
Speaker 3: Again, they're just there together, the three of them. They bond and it's uh, it's special to watch and or hope we keep them here a long time. Sorry.
00:15:37
Speaker 8: What are you seen from Jabbar Muhammad in terms of special teams capacity?
00:15:41
Speaker 3: You know, you see what he's done defensively, We've seen the same improvements he's uh, he's been improving just since we got him, you know, last off season, so throughout you know, last training camp slash season on practice squad, he got better and he got better and he got better and you're seeing you're seeing it right now. Is his gunner releases and and some of the stuff we're asking to do. So he's improving. I'm excited to see training camp. You know, that's the real test for all these guys, is what does training camp look like when you get real compete reps and then those those training camp practices against other teams and then preseason games. That's gonna be a He's one of the guys. I'm excited to see what he can do and showcase what he can do.
00:16:22
Speaker 1: You talked about being impressed with Josh Cameron in college, but just in terms of Wesley Williams, his you know, blocking hunts kicks. How impressed were you with him? And sort of how does he eat? How did he have so much success last year?
00:16:34
Speaker 6: Do you think?
00:16:35
Speaker 3: I think he cares a lot about it. That's one thing about it. He's he comes to the office all the time. It means a lot to him. He's big, strong, and fast. So that's a good quality for special teams. You see how it translates. But he's willing and wants to learn more. Uh, and so I love the kid. I think is the mindset he has the buy into the team. That's the perfect mindset and perfect for what we look for on specially as.
00:17:00
Speaker 8: Someone who started last year on the practice squad obviously gets elevated in part because of a special team's rolling. Now we obviously see him getting a lot of snaps on defense. For you, what has it been like seeing that evolution and where does he kind of play into as of right now the occasion.
00:17:13
Speaker 3: You know, that's one thing I tell the guys from day one. Uh, you know, special teams are important. It's a big part of this team. But my whole goal is I want them to start on defense or offense. So I'm rooting for him, I'm rooting for Ventral. I know we've got a good battle with a couple of those guys. Uh, they're all great. They've been great to me. And the best part about it, whoever doesn't maybe play as many reps on defense, I'm fired up to get to to utilize. So you know, Branson's it was a good special teamer for us last year. And even if he's playing a lot of defense, I'm gonna I'm gonna ask him to stay on some special teams for me. But yeah, they're they're him and Ventrail are both been fantastic for me. Uh, they'll be great. They'll be four phases, both of them.
00:17:53
Speaker 8: Is he a selling point to undraft a free agents for you?
00:17:56
Speaker 3: I think it is. I think we have a bunch of those guys. You know, we had a bunch of rookies.
00:18:00
Speaker 5: Uh.
00:18:00
Speaker 3: You know, the three undrafted guys that make our team on special teams, they end up being, you know, three of our better special teamers. The two you know, the two rookie running backs. Last year there were two returners. So that's what it is. We had seven seven rookies that contributed. Uh. And I think it's a good challenge for this class, you know. And I told him from day one there is opportunities. But guess what those guys have done it They've proven you have to beat those guys out. So we have a really good competition come training camp with a with a loaded roster that's coming back with a bunch of good players that that that we loved in the draft. And uh, you know, it's like I said, I'm looking forward to training camp to see those battles and.
00:18:39
Speaker 1: They're a delivent where you like, they're talking about the rookies, but that's a guy on the other end of very experienced.
00:18:45
Speaker 3: Uh hous he Don Meir has been a guy that I've watched across the league for a bunch of years. Uh you know, I've always admired the way he plays. He's a fantastic kick returner, ken punt return as well, but he can play all phases, you know. You know, it's a it's a battle that running back room. That's so talented. I would love him to be here because he's a very very good special teamer as well as as a running back. So I was excited to get him here and then see him in person. You see why he's so you know, he's so talented. But the way he works, you know, is his ability on kick return, hitting it downhill, has a great stem and a good feel. I see why he was so good across watching him on film and of course facing him all these years. Thanks, no problem,
Speaker 1: Mini camp's done.
