00:00:00
Speaker 1: All right, postgame wrap time here on this Friday night where the Giants ran into a Dodger team that's pretty good, but then they ran into a pitcher that's pretty good. I can see now why Robbie Ray called this guy and said, how do you hold that thing, right? And I don't think he used that pitch that much tonight.
00:00:20
Speaker 2: It was pretty impressive. It was 21 swing and misses.
00:00:24
Speaker 3: Pretty impressive stuff. 21 swing and misses. out of the 75 pitches that he threw. And it was with the fastball changeup. I mean, it was, that was a master class of pitching.
00:00:36
Speaker 2: That was awesome to watch.
00:00:38
Speaker 4: Now, and Dave Fleming, always on the case last year, he found Tarek Skubal in Detroit when the Giants were there and got his side of that story, Robbie Ray learning that changeup from him.
00:00:53
Speaker 5: And he said, well, it wasn't just that.
00:00:56
Speaker 4: It was a little bit of a trade because I've always admired his slider, and I picked his brain and got him to show me his slider grip.
00:01:04
Speaker 5: And he said that it helped him, and.
00:01:08
Speaker 4: Of course he went on to win his second straight Cy Young. So part of, and I don't know how many, I don't think he threw too many sliders today, but whatever he was throwing, nobody was hitting it.
00:01:19
Speaker 5: It was just all great stuff from him.
00:01:22
Speaker 6: Yeah, after tonight's ballgame, I think he's going to get a lot of phone calls wanting to know, how do you hold that fastball? I mean, that was a buzzsaw tonight. You don't normally see a pitcher that dominant with the fastball the way that Scuba was tonight. Strike one was almost automatic all night long. I think he maybe missed once, maybe twice. I mean, he was on them hard. And a guy like that, what's the first thing that a pitching coach would tell you? Beat them early. Don't get in a two-strike count. Stay away from that count at all costs. And they couldn't. I mean, he was just coming at them. I mean, they wanted him to go five innings, and he hadn't thrown enough pitches. No, you need to go to the seventh. Well, no, no, you need to go to the seventh. He could have cruised. I mean, he was throwing rockets the whole night. And, you know, he wasn't getting a mediocre effort from the Giants lineup. You've got a lot of young players trying to make their reputation And that's the guy you want to hit. A two-time Cy Young Award winner. So they were tuned up. It was a playoff game for the Giants young hitters. And they got educated.
00:02:31
Speaker 7: That was dominant.
00:02:35
Speaker 1: He's going to get the headlines. But if you talk about the Giants starter, he didn't throw the ball too bad either.
00:02:41
Speaker 5: Well, he did.
00:02:42
Speaker 6: And, I mean, for Junior Marte, two long balls in the second inning made it a 2-0 ball game.
00:02:47
Speaker 5: Dodgers get four hits.
00:02:48
Speaker 6: I mean, he pitched well enough to win.
00:02:50
Speaker 7: Certainly.
00:02:52
Speaker 6: But, you know, that's what the big leagues is all about. Any given night, somebody could have a night like school. Well, maybe not quite like that. But let's just say a very good night. That could shut your team down. So for Marte, that's all you do. Keep your team in the game.
00:03:06
Speaker 5: Eat innings. That's your job.
00:03:08
Speaker 7: And he did it.
00:03:11
Speaker 4: Is it because he was out there setting the tone? Because the Giants, especially in the bullpen, they've had a hard time throwing strikes at times, usually a lot of walks out of that. That was just the one walk the whole night for the whole Giants pitching staff. The bullpen was never better than they were tonight.
00:03:30
Speaker 3: I really felt like the crowd kind of dictated a lot of the energy for the players. They gave it 40,000 strong here, sellout. It had a nice atmosphere for these guys. They got hyped up, and you could see the bats are swinging first pitch. They know they're going to get a strike. They just unfortunately, we talked about it when we started the whole broadcast, was two guys that can actually go rent a car that are over 25 years old, this whole roster. I mean, it's just unbelievable. To Kruk's point, it's a lesson up here.
00:04:04
Speaker 2: You're not facing this in AA and AAA. All right.
00:04:08
Speaker 7: Good stuff. We'll pick our players when we come back.
00:04:16
Speaker 1: All right, back here at Oracle Park is, as Javi mentioned, really, really super nice crowd tonight.
00:04:21
Speaker 7: But anyway, Javi, you go first. Pick a player.
00:04:24
Speaker 5: Okay.
00:04:24
Speaker 3: Well, I will take– I'm going to save the obvious ones for somebody else. I'm going to take Tristan Beck. The game was getting pretty squirrely there in the ninth inning. That error, middle part of the order, make an error on Freeman. Give up Will Smith, gets his third hit. Seeing the ball well, so you have first and second, nobody out. And he's able to get Kyle Tucker to roll over one there. Finally gave him a fastball. He's lulling him to sleep, going breaking ball, changeup, anything to get him off the fastball. And his fastball's been hotter than I've seen in a while. 97, last outing, this outing, got a big double play to get out of that.
00:05:01
Speaker 2: So that's my pick.
00:05:01
Speaker 7: Good pick.
00:05:03
Speaker 6: Yeah, I'm impressed with the 97. I mean, we didn't see that at all during the year. Since he's come back up and pulled that out, it's like, okay, that's a whole different ballgame now. Look, he's 30 years old. He's as strong as he's ever going to be right now. And he's throwing the ball well. I thought that double play was outstanding.
00:05:19
Speaker 5: Good pick.
00:05:20
Speaker 7: Got it, babe.
00:05:21
Speaker 5: Good.
00:05:23
Speaker 4: So since I get to go next, I'm going for it right now. Scott Bandura had a two-strike count in the third inning and then got a base hit against a left-hander, maybe the best left-hander in the game. But he also, before that base hit, he had thrown out two Dodgers trying to stretch hits into doubles at second base. The first one, he kind of had a hard time picking up along the sidewall in left field and threw the guy out anyway. So I thought that was pretty impressive. So Bandura is my guy. I think that's an excellent pick. I mean, he won't forget this night.
00:06:02
Speaker 7: Good pick, John.
00:06:02
Speaker 6: And neither will we.
00:06:03
Speaker 7: Good pick, John.
00:06:05
Speaker 5: Okay, well, then I'm going to go with Barracuda.
00:06:08
Speaker 6: I mean, he's got magic on Scooble, and there are not a whole lot of guys that can say that. And on a night when Scooble cannot be any better than he was, he had a two-out rocket that he hit to right center field and got out. He got thrown out trying to go to second, but the at-bat at two-strike count with how Scooble was thrown, I mean, that was an incredible at-bat. So I'm taking Victor Bericotto.
00:06:31
Speaker 7: Yeah, Ken, why don't you see him hit in the ninth?
00:06:33
Speaker 5: Yeah.
00:06:35
Speaker 1: All right, I'm going to take Logan Webb for the Willie Mack Award winner.
00:06:38
Speaker 7: We had him on the TV side. He was great.
00:06:41
Speaker 1: And Logan Webb is really, let's face it, he is the face of this franchise.
00:06:46
Speaker 7: And he's a good dude.
00:06:49
Speaker 5: Cool. Nice ceremony.
00:06:52
Speaker 7: It was.
00:06:52
Speaker 3: It was a fantastic thing. And it's kind of surprising that he hadn't won it yet, to be honest with you.
00:06:56
Speaker 5: I know.
00:06:56
Speaker 1: I gave him an extra one in there. I said, well, two-time winner. And he goes, no, no, no, no.
00:07:01
Speaker 7: It was like offended that I actually said that. Mike said next year.
00:07:07
Speaker 4: It's the first time I think maybe ever the Willie Mack ceremony was longer than the game.
00:07:14
Speaker 7: I know.
00:07:15
Speaker 6: What was it, an hour and 57 minutes?
00:07:17
Speaker 4: 53.
00:07:18
Speaker 5: Hour and 53.
00:07:18
Speaker 7: You better.
00:07:20
Speaker 1: Or maybe, you know, one of those on-field ceremonies where this was faster than when Larry speaks.
00:07:28
Speaker 5: All right.
00:07:30
Speaker 7: On that note.
00:07:31
Speaker 1: Time now for What's on Deck, sponsored by your California Ford dealers. Well, there's two more games left in the series, so it'd be nice to see the Giants at least get one of those, and why not do it tomorrow?
00:07:42
Speaker 7: Who we got tomorrow?
00:07:43
Speaker 2: Snell and Tugboat.
00:07:46
Speaker 7: Okay. Tugboat's fun to watch.
00:07:48
Speaker 2: I got to guarantee that Snell's not going to be as good as that.
00:07:53
Speaker 6: No, you might not see another performance like that for a few years. That's how good it was. But they'll have their hands full. I mean, Snell's a different guy. I mean, he's a higher release, and we know how good he can be. But they don't know the tugboat.
00:08:08
Speaker 5: Actually, they do.
00:08:09
Speaker 6: They just got shut out with five innings of shutout ball, tugboat's last start. So it'll be interesting to see how the Dodgers adjust to him because they've seen him now.
00:08:20
Speaker 5: So that's the story tomorrow.
00:08:22
Speaker 1: And it appears that Doc Roberts is going to send out a lineup probably once again.
00:08:28
Speaker 2: They're going to have a week off, so the big boys are going to get a lot of run here.
00:08:32
