Welcome to Pick This Show with Scott, Mike and Ryan
0:14
Welcome to pick this show. We are back to talk about the show. We actually drafted in our first episode physical. So let's get to our impressions and then we will vote at the end of this episode to see if we're going to actually continue with this show or not. But I'd like to start off the discussion here. We all watched the first episode of physical. What was everyone's first impressions? I'm gonna go with you, Ryan. I would say it was definitely different than what I expected when we picked the show and I ran it, you did more homework on it than me. And I thought this was going to be a fun sort of eighties comedy about a wife who's trying to start up an aerobic studio maybe accidentally. Essentially, in the first episode, it seems like we're meeting this woman who is somewhat depressed. As an eating disorder is in a marriage. She's not very happy with. And so it was pretty depressing, honestly, there wasn't a lot to laugh at. I can see where maybe it would get more humorous over time, but for me, it was just very different than what I expected. Yeah, I agree with you Ryan. My impression on this show initially was From all the descriptions I've read, it was a dark comedy, or more of a comedy based show, and this first episode was way darker than I expected especially with the eating disorder and the severity of the eating disorder that Sheila has and really getting into the, to the insights of what she's going through. While it was interesting, it definitely surprised me. What about you, Mike? Yeah I'm curious as to where the show is going. They did paint a fairly bleak picture of this main character of Rosa Burns character, and, she's got this eating disorder. She's got this kind of unhappy marriage. They're she's feeling old. I'm sure she's got some type of trauma that she needs to unpack. And I'm guessing it's this character arc of, that's gonna go to a success, like how she either gets out of this crappy existence and how she rises to the top with aerobics or some type of, fall from grace again where she hits a peak and then falls back off. We don't know exactly where this is going yet. I don't think this is a true story, correct me if I'm wrong here. But I was intrigued, actually, this it, I like Roseburn a lot. The character, while not in a super relatable for me provided enough depth, to, to keep me going. I'm not going to lie. I was on the fence until the last scene in the episode, but once that Flock of Seagulls song dropped and really brought us back to the eighties, I was in, I think. I'm gonna give it another shot because the soundtrack alone can take me to a place. That's really funny you said that. Cause I was in the same mindset once that Flock of Seagulls song went and they were doing the aerobics. I was like, man, like hit my my eighties jam here. Yeah. That's on bags. Yeah, I think it brings up a good point. So it takes place in the eighties, early eighties. There's some references to later in the eighties, which I think. The show probably purposely does to give you some idea that there's a longer story arc that's being developed here to make it maybe more interesting. But it does feel like a show that if you were not born in the eighties or maybe even born, in the two thousands, you might miss a lot of the references. It might be not as appealing in terms of nostalgia. Yeah. And I make the shows for yet, yeah. That's a good point. Off of one episode. It definitely feels it's more sweet spot for us than as older Millennials than anyone born in the 90s, 2000s, et cetera. I remember aerobics. I remember the Jane Fondo workout tapes and I remember that era. Richard Simmons. Home exercise. Yeah. And it was a big deal. It was like very innovative and new. Obviously the VHS. And then Betamax were important to that level of success. It is hard to imagine that today. I guess we have Peloton and other home video training. That people are familiar with. but it just seems so dated that I got to imagine if you were born in the two thousands, this feels ancient just because of all of the references. But I will say there are classes, there are still all of those hit classes and cut seven and all of those type of classes for sure. But this is, as the show starts, it is a class, and we haven't seen the video progression yet that we've seen in the trailers. I'm assuming this is going to a Jazzercise video production level, where the money and the empire of these exercise videos that's the storyline not her teaching classes but maybe I'm wrong. No, I think that was my impression of the show based on the trailer and like the research is that I think you're right. I think they, I think it ends up becoming an aerobics empire slash Jane Fonda type, way. But you are bringing a good point. I would say in this episode, if I think about it more, there were like three different aspects, which we can either like or dislike. So there's the main storyline of Sheila, all of them. Where is that going to go? Has she, how is she getting the aerobics? what is her life about with this eating disorder? Then there's this other storyline with her husband and his pursuit of being fired from the his professorship and then going into politics. And then to your point, Mike, there's this whole third thing where this is the eighties nostalgia and gripping us to remember all of that. Greatness of that era. Let's put it that way. Yeah, that's an interesting way to think about it. There's definitely two sub stories, right? There's, and they both involve characters in, I don't want to say a midlife crisis, but some type of inflection point in their lives, where they need to almost reboot who they are. And you have Sheila, who's, stuck in this rut as a mom, a stay at home mom, trying to find purpose in life. You have her husband who is waiting a career change because again, he's a loser, but is maybe given a second life in politics. And then, If you're not interested horribly in either one of those stories, hopefully you have this whole 80s aura that is sucking you back in and taking you to this world of nostalgia. And I think if none of those work for you, then this is a total vote no. If one or two of those, could pull you in one direction, then I think you vote yes to continue the show. Yeah, I think that's well summarized. At the end of the day, I think for me, it comes down to, do I really like the characters enough to want to continue, or do I find them interesting enough to continue? And I know that he's made to be this way, but the husband is just abhorrent to me. He's just. Such a loser and so self centered. And I really don't care what happens to him. And I assume that's the tilt of the show is that you have much more empathy for Sheila and Rose Byrne's character. So for me, that storyline was I don't really care that much about that her part. I just hope that it gets a little bit more hopeful that, and that, that would be the reason I would continue because it just seems very dire in episode one for her. You weren't deeply rooted in the fact that Danny was trying to pursue a threesome with a college student. Yeah, that did not make me like him more. Also what if he was successful? I don't know. No, I don't know. He just, he seems so desperate in every way, shape or form desperate for approval or relevancy. Yeah. He's clearly a pathetic character. I think that's the point is that he is a loser, but he still maintains the power in this relationship. And is he keep, is he keeping Rose burned down? I dunno, I could see this being a show where. It's not hopeful, necessarily, but like more what Rose Byrne is willing to do to find her place in the world. Whether that's, not supporting her husband as much or not being just a caregiver and stay at home mom and being the breadwinner of the family, how that affects their relationship. I don't know how much I care about this political career. Although, if he does Become a politician. What does that mean for, Rose Byrne streams? So I could see that happening where they both find this new lease on life. And then there's a push pull about who gets to do what I don't necessarily care about the kid, but I guess that's part of it. makes for interesting family dynamic. I don't know. for me, it's interesting enough, to at least see where it's going. And it's such a low time commitment that I could see myself sticking around for a little bit just based on the music alone. Cause you're getting 30 minutes, like a great, an 80s mixtape. Yeah. As long as I get one or two songs, I don't know. We'll see how that goes. I don't know what the budget of the show is, but I can't imagine. I'm using like super hits for that long, because again, unless they have a big music budget, all that flock of seagulls hit like song at the end, while it was well known, it wasn't, I wouldn't say no, they're not paying for space age love song. Yeah. But if I get a bunch of deep cuts like that, that keep me invested and I get more I think we all like business shows or business movies or business entertainment, right? And like origin stories of businesses and entrepreneurs. So if it focuses more on that track and we see how she becomes this aerobics queen pin, and we get fun aerobic shoots and fun music, it could be interesting. If it's more based on her mental demons or trauma and her family relationship. I can see us dropping off sooner than later. I think that's a perfect assessment. That's the gamble. Yeah, I think that's a perfect assessment because I think going in there, I was hoping there would be more of the business empire building. Just even a spark of it. And it was way more into the, I guess you have to root the motivations of Rose Byrne's character. But yeah, totally. You have to set that backstory and it was only 30 minutes. So, yeah, I'm not trying to talk anyone into continuing with this. Based on the reviews. It's maybe it gets better in like season two or three. But it ultimately only lasts three seasons. So it's not like it was getting busters. I don't know where any other arguments to be made for or against things you didn't like Ryan's. I thought the, I thought another interesting, and this is coming to mind, an interesting take on this was the transformation, what you were describing of both characters, they obviously came from they went to Berkeley or a politically rooted grassroots kind of hippie. It seems. Those type of kind of motivations and characters and it seems like at this point in time, especially in the eighties, they're just at a, that a standstill of I've been fighting this battle. We haven't been winning it. I'm going to go maybe try something new. And to your point, I think maybe Rose's Rose Burns character, maybe she was never really into that. And maybe she was just trying to fit in with her husband and realizing that this guy is not meeting her needs anymore. But maybe that's keeping me somewhat intrigued into this show, just like seeing them transform into who they're going to maybe become. I also think, I'm trying to think back on all these TV shows, Why there was a lot of people transforming from political protesters into in the 80s, into, money making, all they cared about was money. Maybe that was the era, but it just seems like we've seen this, we've seen that storyline too a lot. Yeah, decade of excess yeah, I'm on the fence, I can go either way on this. Ryan, what do you think? For me, I think that all the things you brought up are fine points. This could turn into a compelling show. It could have a good payoff. I understand they need to build up the story. But, I just was hoping to be a little bit more hooked and also to laugh a little bit. And it just seems like I might not be laughing at the show very much in the near future. Maybe it changes over time, but it feels to me a lot like a book that I was really excited about reading. And then I start reading, I'm like, Oh, this takes too long to get to the good parts. So I'm either going to quit or I'm just going to skip ahead. And I'm probably, in the camp of quitting right now. You want the cliff notes version. You want to be like, all right, we get this. Let's move on. We want to know that what we're getting we want to know that we're going to get to a certain point And it's not clear right now if we're actually going to ever get right I mean because yeah three seasons like it's not a lot right in 30 minutes an episode But if you do the math, it's five hours of season one, right? That's still a pretty big time commitment And if by the end of season one, we're eh, I hope it's better in season two. And I just, I don't think I have the, there's just too many other options out there. I agree with you, but there are so many shows that you had to watch. It did took so long to get into. For me, I'll give an example, like The Wire, it took me almost like full two seasons to really be like, holy shit, this is I'm in it. This is a good show. And that's a long time commitment. I agree with you. So it took you two seasons. It took me two seasons to get into the and the second seasons. Arguably, I would say maybe bottom two. I know. Oh yeah. Season two was great. I'm, let's jump into season two, but the wire was also critically acclaimed. Everybody agreed. That was one of the best shows of the era, right? You knew that was gonna be you almost had to watch it. It was like an obligation. This is not that. Guess also hear that it's got. 30 episodes. And so if it takes 10 for us to be like, yes, that's too long relative to the length of the season. I'm going to bring this back up to the third. I know you bear 40 percent to get through the wire. But are you wait? Are you bringing the bear up? I think we all agreed season one was like, what the fuck is this show? I didn't like season one and then I love season two season one though. I know. And it was the same thing as well. I was like I guess I got to watch it. You would have probably, if you could have voted though, you would have skipped all of season one and gone right to maybe halfway through season two on that show, right? On there? Yes. Yeah. So if that was an option here, then I'd be more like, Oh yeah, sure. Why not? Let's skip ahead to the middle of season two or start a season two and give that a shot. But if my choice is purely, okay, you got to slog this out. You got to keep watching, maybe it picks up in season one. I don't know, but I'm not optimistic. Oh, I agree with you on that. I just think it takes, there's certain shows that it takes a while to go to. That's my argument. Okay. I'm gonna propose we vote here. Ryan, you first? Yeah, I'm a, no, I'm, I don't want to continue. Scott I will continue to the next episode just to see what happens. It got me enough at the end to say I'm intrigued a little bit. I'm gonna vote. I'm going to vote no, but I might come back to this and power through on some rainy weekend where nothing else. So no official might watch it. Here's the thing. It's September 19th and on September 24th, we have Dr. Odyssey and I'd much rather move on to that and watch that in real time with you than trudge through three seasons of physical that already aired. So my. BATNA on This is no Oh, love how you use the term back I don't know if I use it but no, I, you listening will probably be looking up what the hell BATNA is. We're not epi, but we're not voting to watch the full three seasons, it was voting, voting, just to continue to see it like. One more. One more. Yeah, but he's basically saying hey next week starts this show that I'm more excited about I'd rather Stop and watch that. Valid point. Valid point. It's not to say that I'm not gonna watch this on my own time It's that in the time that I have to talk about this stuff with you What would you rather do? Talk about the very first Very exciting premiere of Joshua Jackson on the cruise boat, saving the day. With Don Johnson. With Don Johnson. I'm actually getting excited about watching this show too, if we're, so it sounds like we're at a two to one stop the show. Is that right? Is that official? Yeah. That's an official. Unofficially, Scott and I are going to run through this. Sure. If it gets really good, let me know. I'll watch it on the side. All right. We'll maybe revisit, but we're stopping the count two to one. On next one we're going to Odyssey. That's, that was the we were, we tied on that one. O we tied, that's why we're moving to Odys. That's where we're, that's why we're moving on. It was the assume next pick and I don't know unless anyone has a challenge to this gonna be, anyone else has any other. contender they want to bring to the table. Then I think we just have to move forward. No, I saw the trailer the other day for Dr. Odyssey and John Stamos was a guest star. I was like I'm in a hundred percent. Uncle Jesse on board. Uncle Jesse. Yep. Beach boy. The thing that I'm looking forward to Dr. Odyssey is less because I think it's actually going to be good and more because I feel like it'll give us a lot of things to make fun of. As much as. I didn't want to keep watching physical. I can't really make fun of it. It wasn't like a badly done show, with lots of plot holes in my mind. So Dr. Odyssey hopefully fulfills that. Yes. Physical is going to be much more potentially serious conversation about things we might not want to talk about or at least not be entertaining about. Yeah. Yeah. It's sounding like Ryan, you want to show that isn't as. Obviously, it's not as serious, but you just want a lighthearted lighthearted show. To some degree. I'm not 100 percent against, something really serious and incredibly well done. But I just think it's more fun to talk to you guys about something that we can all poke a little fun at and not take too seriously. And Dr. Odyssey I'm making assumptions, but I'm assuming it's more akin to that. It is going to be hard to talk about eating disorders from week to week. That's not exactly a fun topic that you can, or no one should be listening to us talk about that. Yeah. We are not the right source to, to talk about that. That is a hundred percent true. But I'll be the right source to talk about, getting drunk on a cruise ship and falling off. Yes. That is more in line with our life experiences. I assume from the Dr. RFC preview, and maybe I'm not sure. There's gonna be, I can't wait for these medical mysteries. Do you think it's going to be like house? Do you think it's going to be like a house show or the medical mystery is going to be Oh, someone shot someone. No, it's not going to be like that at all. I think it's going to be somebody choked on a shrimp. Give him the Heimlich, and I don't know. He's got a serious like doctor's room and it's what's his name? Ryan I think there's gonna be some stuff we've never heard of and you're gonna be like, is that a real disease? And they're gonna open it up. It'll be fun. It'll be wild. It's gonna be like Grey's Anatomy. Alright, it's on next week. We'll be back to talk about the first one. Kyle Chandler might have to disarm a bomb and explode. Is Kyle Chandler in the show? No, but you remember that Grey's Anatomy Super Bowl episode? Yes, that was a, that was probably one of their better episodes. Yeah, 100%. When it was, when Grey's Anatomy was somewhat still good. That show's still on, right? It's just it's like season 24. That's wild. They've made so much, what's her name, Ellen Pompeo has made so much money from that show. Yeah, she literally does nothing else. All right. On that note, we will be back next week to talk about Dr. Odyssey and our impressions. Thanks Amazing. Can't wait. I'm oddly excited about it all right, I'll make the t shirts. See you next week. See you guys.
