00:00:00.839 --> 00:00:07.559
Welcome to perspectives with Willoughby-Eastlake City School superintendent Doctor Patrick Ward.
00:00:07.559 --> 00:00:26.280
From the football field to the adults work every day to help Officer Buck and coach McCue distinct roles in safety, illustrating how adults support of the classroom.
00:00:27.320 --> 00:00:37.840
Welcome to the Perspectives We believe here in Willoughby Eastlake, that perspective is gained by engaging in conversation and building relationships.
00:00:37.840 --> 00:00:43.880
And so today we have some distinguished guests to join us on the podcast, coach McCue and officer Buck.
00:00:43.880 --> 00:00:51.640
And they're here to talk a school and the impact they have these particular positions.
00:00:51.640 --> 00:00:57.359
And so we'll start to unpack that, but we'll start in the easiest place for the conversation.
00:00:57.359 --> 00:00:59.929
Tell us a little bit about Uh, coach.
00:00:59.929 --> 00:01:01.890
Uh, so, uh, Matt McHugh.
00:01:01.890 --> 00:01:06.890
Um, I've had, uh, two of my uh, the district.
00:01:06.890 --> 00:01:21.890
I have one that's going to be a Um, we've been in the district And, um, you know, I'm a My day job is, uh, I'm the deputy director with the Geauga Park District.
00:01:21.890 --> 00:01:29.530
So, uh, um, coaching's been kind of a nice way to get involved in the community and kind of, um, one of my other passions is sports.
00:01:29.530 --> 00:01:34.049
So it's great to get involved with coaching and, and competition at the high school level.
00:01:34.049 --> 00:01:34.489
Well, welcome.
00:01:34.489 --> 00:01:38.170
Thanks for coming out today to with us today.
00:01:38.170 --> 00:01:45.849
Uh, we're really appreciative of Officer Buck, tell us a little Uh, officer Buck, I'm the Willoughby Middle School resource officer.
00:01:45.849 --> 00:01:48.530
Uh, I've been with the City of Willoughby for about six years now.
00:01:48.530 --> 00:01:52.290
I've been at the school about Uh, absolutely love it there.
00:01:52.290 --> 00:02:04.230
Um, got great administration, Um, and I'm just happy to be Officer Buck, you're coming in Let me just go ahead and throw Okay.
00:02:04.230 --> 00:02:08.870
If you've ever visited Willoughby Middle School, officer Buck knows every student's name.
00:02:08.870 --> 00:02:14.150
He greets every kid every single And there's not one day where we you're not smiling.
00:02:14.150 --> 00:02:19.110
So we appreciate everything you do for our kids here and keeping them safe and building those relationships.
00:02:19.110 --> 00:02:26.628
And that's kind of what we're We're talking about the school outside of the classroom members of our community.
00:02:26.628 --> 00:02:43.870
Uh, and, you know, whether you interact with a school resource interactions are really And so let's, let's just start How did you stumble into flag football and how did that journey begin?
00:02:43.870 --> 00:02:55.949
Yeah, really kind of stumbled So my, uh, my daughter, um, athletics at South, um, her this flag football thing.
00:02:55.949 --> 00:03:00.878
It was kind of just sort of in its infancy about five years ago, and she wanted to start a team.
00:03:00.878 --> 00:03:07.479
So I told her, hey, you know, She took the initiative, reached out to the Browns, got with Mr.
00:03:07.479 --> 00:03:11.360
Patrick, kind of went through all getting a club recognized in that.
00:03:11.360 --> 00:03:26.080
And then she's like, well, you So I said, okay, yeah, I can I, I coach some youth travel I'm very much into, into Hey, flag football, you know, So new.
00:03:26.080 --> 00:03:30.038
Most of the girls that first season, they had all played soccer and basketball with my daughter.
00:03:30.038 --> 00:03:33.120
So it's kind of a good experience to end of their senior year.
00:03:33.120 --> 00:03:47.038
Um, we kind of went into it not I hadn't played flag football intramurals, so I kind of And then, uh, we had a good group of girls that had some unique talents, that speed and quickness that worked really well.
00:03:47.038 --> 00:03:55.378
And we had a really great first Then the next year really kind So it's, it's been a fun, uh, We just finished up.
00:03:55.378 --> 00:04:03.860
So. So when you wind it back This really was a small movement that began with a small group of girls that were interested in starting something new and different.
00:04:03.860 --> 00:04:04.740
Yeah, really.
00:04:04.740 --> 00:04:14.060
I think the year we got involved previous year, I think there The year we involved, I think there was close to twenty six schools.
00:04:14.060 --> 00:04:21.699
Our first season we had twelve Um, this past season, right were at around thirty.
00:04:21.699 --> 00:04:25.620
I think we ended with about team between JV and varsity.
00:04:25.620 --> 00:04:30.220
So yeah, it's really, really grown over the last couple of years as far as just interest and participation.
00:04:30.220 --> 00:04:36.620
And I think Northeast Ohio down to Columbus, there's one hundred and sixty two teams and then there's some teams down in Cincinnati.
00:04:36.620 --> 00:04:49.220
So we're probably pushing close teams already in the state in So it's really grown So is this conversations unfold, We'll unpack a little bit about kind of what some of the highlights of this journey has been.
00:04:49.220 --> 00:04:57.110
Um, because I know it's been Some of the places that, again, this small, simple idea four years ago kind of, you know, has reached.
00:04:57.110 --> 00:04:58.949
So stay tuned.
00:04:58.949 --> 00:05:04.230
Officer Buck, how did you get How did you end up to be in the officer in a middle school?
00:05:04.230 --> 00:05:10.350
Nonetheless, because I'm sure know, be at this level.
00:05:10.350 --> 00:05:15.028
Um, it was actually during the pandemic, I think it was around twenty twenty one or twenty twenty two.
00:05:15.028 --> 00:05:19.910
They were looking for another um, they offered it out there.
00:05:19.910 --> 00:05:30.750
So I kind of just started And then they were looking for And, uh, I, I don't know if it was just the luck or I was the only one that applied for it, but I got the job and, uh, it's been great.
00:05:30.750 --> 00:05:37.189
I think it's just been, it's, expected or planned on being It just kind of just happened.
00:05:37.189 --> 00:05:46.028
But I think like everything I, I've really enjoyed my time I've really got to learn more the kids, to be honest with you.
00:05:46.028 --> 00:05:50.910
And so you're rounding out, No, it's going to be my fifth So fifth year.
00:05:50.910 --> 00:05:51.149
Yeah.
00:05:51.149 --> 00:05:54.720
So like twenty twenty, I think that I started.
00:05:54.720 --> 00:05:56.199
So yeah.
00:05:56.199 --> 00:06:01.920
So you've been there a couple of Yeah, I actually just had my first full class just graduated this year.
00:06:01.920 --> 00:06:10.278
So it was kind of, it was kind them and remembering them when So, so like you just touched on like the universal experience of school, right?
00:06:10.278 --> 00:06:23.199
We see these kids when they're and then we send them out and Um, since we all attend school, like we have these memories of our own schooling experience, is there a teacher that comes to mind?
00:06:23.199 --> 00:06:31.639
Um, top of mind when we say like the impact, uh, in your life, shout out to today.
00:06:31.639 --> 00:06:35.759
I would, uh, I know I didn't go hold that against me.
00:06:35.759 --> 00:06:36.439
We would never.
00:06:36.439 --> 00:06:37.160
Okay.
00:06:37.160 --> 00:06:40.759
Um, I actually graduated from teacher there that we had.
00:06:40.759 --> 00:06:41.759
It was a shop teacher.
00:06:41.759 --> 00:06:44.040
His name was, uh, Mr. Troha.
00:06:44.040 --> 00:06:48.560
He actually played on the Ohio eight championship team.
00:06:48.560 --> 00:06:48.879
Oh, wow.
00:06:48.879 --> 00:06:51.379
Didn't see a lot of playing time, but he didn't let everybody know.
00:06:51.379 --> 00:06:56.180
You know what the big nugget he Uh, but he was really great.
00:06:56.180 --> 00:07:28.939
I remember I don't remember a remember him because of the fact with him, the classes were about So roughly, he would spend class, which, you know, complain, but he, he would He would sit there, he would would just kind of like talk to on, current events, what's going kept the like, man to man and You didn't feel like you're You felt like you were talking level as you.
00:07:28.939 --> 00:07:40.500
And this guy's been teaching for So I kind of like, it's kind of of took from that when I was know, you're, you're around them I kind of want to like talk to somebody as an authority figure.
00:07:40.500 --> 00:07:43.899
And I think that kind of, um, you know, speaks for itself, hopefully.
00:07:43.899 --> 00:07:51.709
Well, I'll have to say you do an exceptional job at that, honoring not only Mr. Troja, but I get to see it firsthand every single day.
00:07:51.709 --> 00:07:57.189
And so like, just being able to connect with kids and connect with any, you know, person that's in front of you is important.
00:07:57.189 --> 00:07:59.310
So what about you, coach?
00:07:59.310 --> 00:08:04.230
I would say probably, um, Mr.
00:08:04.230 --> 00:08:09.709
macroeconomics teacher back at what officer Buck was saying.
00:08:09.709 --> 00:08:12.990
Probably one of the first teachers really stands out in my mind.
00:08:12.990 --> 00:08:19.709
Um, really, I mean, made with the students.
00:08:19.709 --> 00:08:26.790
Um, probably one of the teachers I remember actually pushed me a little bit more, um, you know, pushed me to take macroeconomics.
00:08:26.790 --> 00:08:39.350
Um, you know, at a time, probably school wise, I wasn't really pushing myself in some areas and then also pushed me to do an experience called lab at the time, which is like a mini kind of business school camp at Lake Erie College over the summer.
00:08:39.350 --> 00:08:41.149
Um, and really great experience.
00:08:41.149 --> 00:08:47.000
So kind of just stands out as somebody who kind of gave me a little bit of nudge maybe when I needed it, which, which helped out.
00:08:47.000 --> 00:09:13.720
So it was kind of neat about Is flash forward to this talking about the impact that roles on the lives of the kids And so when you think about athletics and you think about being involved, and you think about the connection and opportunities that our students have access to here, like what in your perspective are some of the the largest benefits to an athlete when, when we talk about participating outside of the academic day?
00:09:13.720 --> 00:09:24.320
Yeah, I think, I mean, really to especially team sports, you know, again, it's I, I grew up, outside doing stuff.
00:09:24.320 --> 00:09:31.360
So I think it's great kind of get involved in something where you can get out, participate in something with your classmates in that.
00:09:31.360 --> 00:09:44.120
And again, really with team love about flag football is it You know, it's it's different than maybe some of the individual sports like golf and that where you're kind of out there with tennis doing your thing.
00:09:44.120 --> 00:09:48.340
This is where everyone's going together and do their part.
00:09:48.340 --> 00:10:05.460
Um, and really from just a it's a relatively new sport, I We're getting girls who, you different backgrounds in the played a lot of competitive they're all kind of starting at It's new to all of them.
00:10:05.460 --> 00:10:09.740
So like the last couple of years, it's been great to see kind of how everyone's progressing.
00:10:09.740 --> 00:10:12.899
Just like fundamentally, even the end of the season.
00:10:12.899 --> 00:10:26.899
So I think it's a great opportunity for confidence to be built, just trying something new and, you know, developing those relationships as part of a team I think is really, really, um, great for the athletes and, and kind of again, helps build confidence.
00:10:26.899 --> 00:10:37.298
And I think going forward in of team sports help you deal and how you overcome things and you know, as you grow up.
00:10:37.298 --> 00:10:41.259
And so would you, would it be fair to say that you're surprised?
00:10:41.259 --> 00:10:49.269
You'd be surprised by how evolved, and how quickly you of this mountain.
00:10:49.269 --> 00:10:53.590
You know, talk to that journey a pretty, pretty remarkable.
00:10:53.590 --> 00:10:53.990
Yeah.
00:10:53.990 --> 00:10:55.950
I mean, really, we always laugh.
00:10:55.950 --> 00:11:02.548
I mean, our first practice, we team just talking, you know, we win a game.
00:11:02.548 --> 00:11:09.590
And really the first I think we actually were two and two before we kind of went on a on a run after that.
00:11:09.590 --> 00:11:15.389
Um, but really, um, you know, like it just happened fast.
00:11:15.389 --> 00:11:20.668
And then we came back the next freshmen that were on the team.
00:11:20.668 --> 00:11:27.269
And that's the group that's now that are juniors, and to work with.
00:11:27.269 --> 00:11:35.629
Um, just being around the the girls is really kind of, um, just been great for me to kind of see like how they approach things.
00:11:35.629 --> 00:11:39.750
Um, they're really into it game and that.
00:11:39.750 --> 00:11:45.730
So, um, yeah, fundamentally, um, it's been fun kind of teaching fundamentals, but seeing how far we've progressed.
00:11:45.730 --> 00:11:50.250
You know, last year was a really kind of memorable season this season.
00:11:50.250 --> 00:11:57.490
Um, we didn't quite end the way really remarkable season, our of the four years.
00:11:57.490 --> 00:12:17.970
So, so a lot of positive things But you know, last year kind of expectations to kind of be one So, so flipping now down to the middle school where some of these kids are beginning to explore the things that they're interested in, like, what's it like outside the classroom, uh, to have it be able to build those connections and to get to know kids.
00:12:17.970 --> 00:12:23.330
And where are the places during the day that you find that happen most organically in your role.
00:12:23.330 --> 00:12:23.730
Ooh.
00:12:23.730 --> 00:12:24.570
Good question.
00:12:24.570 --> 00:12:37.528
Um, I think it's just really, changes, you know, because then I mean, we have four minutes So seeing them kind of in their you can't have phones anymore.
00:12:37.528 --> 00:12:40.610
So they're always like trying to catch up on what's going on in between classes.
00:12:40.610 --> 00:12:49.538
So just seeing them like in the, with their friends kind of, you really just being kids.
00:12:49.538 --> 00:12:55.298
I think I, I feel like, um, that I'm seeing.
00:12:55.298 --> 00:12:57.500
I'm not seeing them in class because you're having supervision.
00:12:57.500 --> 00:13:08.500
They're learning, they're trying to have a structured, uh, you know, model there, but just kind of walking through classes, you know, walking during class changes, going through the commons, going to the cafeteria for lunches.
00:13:08.500 --> 00:13:14.220
Um, I, I actually see them being being the most real for me.
00:13:14.220 --> 00:13:15.139
Yeah.
00:13:15.139 --> 00:13:22.340
So one of the unique things get a whole new group coming in group kind of move up to South Correct.
00:13:22.340 --> 00:13:30.500
So for those incoming sixth graders, is there any words of wisdom, advice, uh, any, uh, you know, nuggets that you can share with them?
00:13:30.500 --> 00:13:35.019
Um, because we're going to be at this in before you know it, right?
00:13:35.019 --> 00:14:32.548
Uh, make smart decisions, I interesting because there's one only been there about like going really interesting to see how it You know, um, this sixth grade I will say, uh, but it always flows just like anything in an adult or a kid with different different people you work with, But, um, I would tell them to, stepping stone, just as it is a grade, you know, the promotion I just told this eighth grade promotion ceremony, uh, week and um, you know, right now your big but next year you're going to be So I kind of tell them like just kind of remember, because it is a bit of a difference, just like these sixth graders will be coming from Grant or Edison, and they're not going to know what to expect.
00:14:32.548 --> 00:14:39.370
But this is where you get a little bit older, you get a little bit more responsibility, but also with that, you do get a little bit more freedom, a freedom, a little bit more independence.
00:14:39.370 --> 00:15:02.129
And like anything, it comes in And I think that I would tell them just to not have any expectations because again, you do have some students there that have older brothers and sisters that tell them like, okay, you want to do this or you want to avoid this or try to do this and kind of give them some insight, kind of give them some tips before they get there, but just kind of just kind of go in there with an open mind and kind of like, let it, let it flow naturally.
00:15:02.129 --> 00:15:08.528
And then, you know, within a few you'll get your, you'll get how things work.
00:15:08.528 --> 00:15:11.528
And, you know, you just kind of try to mold them the best way you can.
00:15:11.528 --> 00:15:30.690
And they kind of just fall into It's one of the best things You know, twenty six years is kids come to school and, you come in sometimes hot, but they They learn, you know, the new And then hopefully they get involved in, you know, something that, you know, lights them on fire, right?
00:15:30.690 --> 00:15:38.580
Um, coach, when you think about, this team And how did you help?
00:15:38.580 --> 00:15:46.820
Um, again, this group of, uh, adversity that comes with to the big, uh, the game.
00:15:46.820 --> 00:15:47.778
Because I'm not mistaken.
00:15:47.778 --> 00:15:49.740
You got to the big game one Yeah.
00:15:49.740 --> 00:15:57.418
Like, tell us about how that can become universal for, for, Yeah.
00:15:57.418 --> 00:16:04.620
And that's really, I mean, with, with sports in general, I think a lot of the, um, things happen very quickly.
00:16:04.620 --> 00:16:13.700
So like dealing with adversity coaches, we try to kind of it's okay to fail.
00:16:13.700 --> 00:16:30.058
Failing, learning, you know, Um, you know, so we try to have outlook that, you know, we'd trying and, you know, in, in any down on a play.
00:16:30.058 --> 00:16:31.500
Somebody runs the wrong route.
00:16:31.500 --> 00:16:34.019
You know, there's always something that's going to happen.
00:16:34.019 --> 00:16:42.190
So how you deal with that and going to say a lot more about wise and core value wise.
00:16:42.190 --> 00:17:03.788
Um, a lot of things and we standpoint, try to keep things So, um, like last year, our big just worry about the play right practice, worry about what we're ahead of yourself, not worrying You can't really, really do anything about that or control that.
00:17:03.788 --> 00:17:11.588
So our philosophy is always just keep focusing on the now and positive outlook on things.
00:17:11.588 --> 00:17:15.788
We tell the players three things your teammates you care.
00:17:15.788 --> 00:17:32.710
And I think when you break that you meet people, whether it's in environment, those are the kind away, you know, is this somebody Do they care about me and are we So that's kind of what we focus on when we've run into those situations where we've had adversity.
00:17:32.710 --> 00:17:37.730
I think the girls have handled it really well because we try to keep things very kind of even keel.
00:17:37.730 --> 00:17:41.690
Um, again, if somebody makes a great play, it's like, it's great to go celebrate with your teammates.
00:17:41.690 --> 00:17:44.650
But again, you know, we're just kind of getting ready for the next play.
00:17:44.650 --> 00:17:48.568
So we always try to keep it very focused on right now and what we're doing.
00:17:48.568 --> 00:17:52.890
And you know again, even even talk about the end goal.
00:17:52.890 --> 00:17:54.288
It was just game by game.
00:17:54.288 --> 00:17:55.568
Let's focus on that.
00:17:55.568 --> 00:18:00.088
So that's sort of what we kind of instill and try to keep working on.
00:18:00.088 --> 00:18:10.048
Well, wonderful lessons when you mantra, you know, because you South playing athletics and that That translates to career.
00:18:10.048 --> 00:18:16.170
That translates to just life in general, you know, do, do, do the people that you interact with, you know, do they care about you?
00:18:16.170 --> 00:18:24.568
Um, and then are they genuine and investment and get through Um, you know, I think about think about our parents.
00:18:24.568 --> 00:18:30.690
We've got, you know, um, parents resource, their children.
00:18:30.690 --> 00:18:50.618
Um, and if we think about the sometimes joining athletics at coming to middle school, like parents and that can make So we like to always, you know, ask from perspective of coach and parent perspective of school resource officer and member of the community.
00:18:50.618 --> 00:19:04.500
Like what advice if you could you give parents as they're kind think about athletics or middle school, um, to help kind Uh, we'll start with you, Like.
00:19:04.500 --> 00:19:04.778
Like what?
00:19:04.778 --> 00:19:06.338
Advice directly to parents.
00:19:06.338 --> 00:19:12.740
Oh, um, two things I think I can think of off the top of my head would probably one would be patience.
00:19:12.740 --> 00:19:27.220
I mean, I realized when I first those things where, um, I had, I adjust my thinking in regards to their childhood through my way things were.
00:19:27.220 --> 00:19:28.538
But everybody's different.
00:19:28.538 --> 00:19:40.358
So I think for me, it taught me, uh, you know, as an officer to be a little bit more patient, which I think I think, uh, adults should kind of take to heart because they are transitioning, they're still being developed.
00:19:40.358 --> 00:19:47.960
They're so physically, they're mentally, emotionally, there's a the same time.
00:19:47.960 --> 00:19:51.318
Uh, besides patience I'd probably say, you know, be invested.
00:19:51.318 --> 00:19:55.278
I think you need to invest in what's going on?
00:19:55.278 --> 00:19:55.960
How was your day?
00:19:55.960 --> 00:19:59.000
I mean, it's easy to kind of We're all busy.
00:19:59.000 --> 00:20:08.318
We all have things going on and you kind of just forget about, you know, you have work, you have life, you have to go grocery shopping, you have to come home, get dinner or extracurricular activities like sports.
00:20:08.318 --> 00:20:11.759
But, you know, ask about, ask what's going on.
00:20:11.759 --> 00:20:29.048
I think if you really kind of surprised at what they tell you clam up a little bit, especially But I think they do eventually And I think it's I think it's your job as a parent to kind of be patient, but also try to pry just enough to get something out of them.
00:20:29.048 --> 00:20:31.490
So what you're saying is, when I go home today, I should be patient.
00:20:31.490 --> 00:20:34.328
And I should ask a lot of Tell Anthony and I got it.
00:20:34.328 --> 00:20:35.808
I'm going to get after it today.
00:20:35.808 --> 00:20:38.890
That was my it was my absolutely officer buck says I got to be patient.
00:20:38.890 --> 00:20:52.730
But what great advice for the middle level, transitioning we're going to take care of We've got good adults who care home, be patient and invest in their day, right?
00:20:52.730 --> 00:20:57.730
Um, I mean, definitely sage No patience.
00:20:57.730 --> 00:20:58.288
Definitely.
00:20:58.288 --> 00:20:59.088
Definitely agree.
00:20:59.088 --> 00:21:09.690
Patience and communication is You know, from that standpoint with parents, I'd also say, you know, let them advocate for themselves.
00:21:09.690 --> 00:21:36.700
Um, you know, when they get to further on in their high school let them fail, especially like of times today, everyone gets and that, but, you know, really things not going your way and And I think that's going to help times, you know, just parents can do something to help.
00:21:36.700 --> 00:21:40.259
And I think really, it's good through that process.
00:21:40.259 --> 00:21:44.259
That's, that's part of the learning process and, and letting them work through some adversity.
00:21:44.259 --> 00:22:04.578
So I would say, don't be afraid Um, you know, also don't feel um, take control of situations, things aren't going their way or again, kind of let them work it'll hopefully pay off as they, I love that you said that because I didn't even think about that.
00:22:04.578 --> 00:22:11.460
It's about the fact that something that we can all you I mean, it's part of life.
00:22:11.460 --> 00:22:12.538
It's not just about learning.
00:22:12.538 --> 00:22:18.259
It's about it's about growing And you only succeed when you from your mistakes.
00:22:18.259 --> 00:22:20.180
So that was that was good.
00:22:20.180 --> 00:22:21.098
I should have come up with that.
00:22:21.098 --> 00:22:24.500
Well, this is good because this is a theme we heard in a previous podcast.
00:22:24.500 --> 00:22:51.278
We heard a lot about the learning through the things that And what's really interesting is that no matter whether you're on, you know, an athletic field or you're, you know, in passing time at the middle school, it's going to be those moments where you're going to probably, uh, gain the greatest life, uh, tools and strategies because you leave a controlled classroom and you get into these environments that are more real and more authentic.
00:22:51.278 --> 00:23:14.118
Like this is where you pick up So thinking about those big the perspectives and roles that what, what is the advice would give if, if you had, you and they're like, I want to know I'm getting started on this Like, what's the big two pointers that you would give to kids?
00:23:14.118 --> 00:23:29.650
Um. I think one of them is kind parents and children is would be Kids at that age are still learning more about themselves.
00:23:29.650 --> 00:23:51.088
But I think it's also with technology and, and the creature always news at your fingertips They're expecting things to They're expecting things And it's like, you kind of kind out of sixth, put it in a little bit, you know, get back gears a little bit.
00:23:51.088 --> 00:23:55.930
But I think it's telling them that it's okay to learn about yourself.
00:23:55.930 --> 00:23:59.368
It's not going to be the all, built in a day.
00:23:59.368 --> 00:24:19.328
It's not going to be fixed in It's just you have to let things And I think when you have that a you'll, um, I think you'll do, But the other one I would say is little bit of grace because it said in regards to failing.
00:24:19.328 --> 00:24:22.650
You know, it's they're so hard They really want to do well.
00:24:22.650 --> 00:24:30.700
And there's a lot of pressure social media and where they want they want to go.
00:24:30.700 --> 00:24:33.660
And it's like, you know, you got okay to fail.
00:24:33.660 --> 00:24:36.380
Give yourself a little bit of But it's a process.
00:24:36.380 --> 00:24:36.980
It's a journey.
00:24:36.980 --> 00:24:46.578
You know, it's not about finally It's the journey of getting You know, it's not the So I would tell them a little bit of patience, a little bit of grace.
00:24:46.578 --> 00:24:55.019
And I think you're going to be I love that idea of giving our themselves some grace.
00:24:55.019 --> 00:24:55.460
Right?
00:24:55.460 --> 00:25:01.900
With technology and the standards that kids hold themselves to and the access they have, it's a really great reminder.
00:25:01.900 --> 00:25:14.338
Um, as you're entering, whether it's the middle school years, the high school years, or whether you're going to choose to go compete, you know, in a sport that's brand new and hasn't been around for a long time, but certainly has made a big splash.
00:25:14.338 --> 00:25:21.160
So, so what's the advice I would say kind of going off of that theme there is try something new.
00:25:21.160 --> 00:25:26.838
Um, you know, if you would have I'd be coaching high school flag football, I would have been shocked.
00:25:26.838 --> 00:25:28.440
Um, try something new.
00:25:28.440 --> 00:25:42.200
I, I think especially, you know, are so many clubs, so many sure at north too that um, get If you're not familiar with try something new.
00:25:42.200 --> 00:25:47.519
And um, you might find that it's realize that that you were into.
00:25:47.519 --> 00:26:00.640
And also I would say, you know, don't be afraid to, uh, you know, again, in the world we live in with, with, uh, phones and technology and everything, um, don't be afraid just to kind of meet some new people too, and, and have those conversations.
00:26:00.640 --> 00:26:09.720
And if it's somebody, you know, as a freshman, you know, you may different, different school, to make that contact.
00:26:09.720 --> 00:26:19.400
And again, I think those are all that those high school years are kind of, um, learn a little bit Yeah.
00:26:19.400 --> 00:26:28.690
To our listeners and viewers, like we really don't let our guests talk to each other from podcast to podcast, but the themes that keep coming up over and over again, it's pretty, pretty remarkable.
00:26:28.690 --> 00:26:32.608
This idea of connection, this of getting involved.
00:26:32.608 --> 00:26:48.368
We've heard that theme come up a good reminder to parents, to involved, um, right now in the And what coach said is especially about talking to people, I think that's critical right now with those social skills that we're kind of losing focus on.
00:26:48.368 --> 00:26:58.650
I mean, there's a lot of messaging, but there's nobody's Nobody's really doing any kind of putting themselves out there and being uncomfortable, you know?
00:26:58.650 --> 00:27:03.568
And sometimes you have to be uncomfortable to be successful or to find things out about yourself.
00:27:03.568 --> 00:27:10.009
So I think those social skills at that age are critical to remind your kids like, hey, not everything's going to be through a screen.
00:27:10.009 --> 00:27:12.808
We like to say it's get comfortable with being uncomfortable.
00:27:12.808 --> 00:27:13.288
Exactly.
00:27:13.288 --> 00:27:14.769
That's exactly.
00:27:14.769 --> 00:27:20.868
You have to, you have to get out eventually be successful because think you just become stagnant.
00:27:20.868 --> 00:27:21.348
Yeah.
00:27:21.348 --> 00:27:24.910
So like athletics naturally puts students in that environment, right?
00:27:24.910 --> 00:27:27.710
Where you force them to be do something new.
00:27:27.710 --> 00:27:31.150
You put them into the game.
00:27:31.150 --> 00:27:35.950
I think the same is true about and the adults they meet that Right.
00:27:35.950 --> 00:27:36.390
Right.
00:27:36.390 --> 00:27:45.509
It's those opportunities where just the broader community, how type of interactions.
00:27:45.509 --> 00:27:56.470
So I'm going to kind of ask Like when you think about girls like football in particular, like it's kind of really exploded at the state level and it's exploding at the national level.
00:27:56.470 --> 00:28:08.108
So what accounts for that so I think there's a couple I think, you know, in the US, football has has always been very popular.
00:28:08.108 --> 00:28:10.190
I think Northeast Ohio.
00:28:10.190 --> 00:28:13.588
You know, when you think of football comes to mind.
00:28:13.588 --> 00:28:20.720
Um, so I think just from a popularity standpoint, the opportunity for girls to participate in that I think is huge.
00:28:20.720 --> 00:28:28.720
I also think to the NFL is really behind it, and they've invested a lot in it to help promote it, to get ready for the Olympics.
00:28:28.720 --> 00:28:41.440
So I think those two things have But I think specifically in Northeast Ohio, I think it's just when when I think of, you know, Northeast Ohio, it's it's definitely football's kind of like the number one sport that that people seem to gravitate towards.
00:28:41.440 --> 00:29:00.358
So I think realistically, just the girls to compete in that for again, that kind of ties into You know, all of us growing up, whether it was Lake Catholic or mentor, you know, a lot of those those cities and areas identified with, you know, their their high school football teams and that.
00:29:00.358 --> 00:29:06.680
So I think girls having that opportunity, I think there's that connection to the larger community, some of the success we've had.
00:29:06.680 --> 00:29:15.000
I said, it's really interesting you know, when you're out and And and it's people I didn't girls flag football.
00:29:15.000 --> 00:29:18.930
So I mean, that's where I think, um, that's kind of part of the growth.
00:29:18.930 --> 00:29:27.288
And I think nationally too, it's just, you know, if you take that across the country, that's where you're seeing that kind of growth just at that sort of grassroots level.
00:29:27.288 --> 00:29:40.808
And, you know, now it seems to So it's been a source of pride district, kind of a team start was and the opportunities that, for our students.
00:29:40.808 --> 00:29:46.769
Uh, you know, when you pair that with the lessons we talked about today, like it was pretty remarkable opportunity.
00:29:46.769 --> 00:29:54.410
And, you know, Willoughby, Ohio, uh, you know, you guys took an scale it out.
00:29:54.410 --> 00:30:04.568
And that's, that's what it's all And we've heard that theme over Um, and throughout various, uh, and, and lake and mentor are Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:30:04.568 --> 00:30:04.970
Yes.
00:30:04.970 --> 00:30:05.608
There you go.
00:30:05.608 --> 00:30:07.730
Well, well, I guess, I guess Right.
00:30:07.730 --> 00:30:09.328
We'll, we'll roll with that.
00:30:09.328 --> 00:30:17.588
Um, and we're all in this know um North, I think they're year of flag football.
00:30:17.588 --> 00:30:21.430
And, you know, we do a joint them every season.
00:30:21.430 --> 00:30:24.950
Um last year their coach reached we're starting on new.
00:30:24.950 --> 00:30:33.230
And I said, it's been really think from a district memorable as far as fun We'll work out together.
00:30:33.230 --> 00:30:40.990
We'll do a lot of, um, skill that, and then we'll scrimmage south, they have that rivalry.
00:30:40.990 --> 00:30:47.548
But I said it's been a good we're practicing together, um, girls seem to enjoy it.
00:30:47.548 --> 00:30:50.548
So again, it's like a lot of these kids were playing youth sports together.
00:30:50.548 --> 00:30:54.470
And it's kind of neat to see them kind of back together, you know, practicing and working out together.
00:30:54.470 --> 00:30:58.710
So it's been really neat to see Awesome.
00:30:58.710 --> 00:31:02.348
So as we start to wind this conversation down, there's two questions we always ask toward the end.
00:31:02.348 --> 00:31:10.509
One is what leaves you most So generally speaking, when you think about the state of everything you're encounter with kids.
00:31:10.509 --> 00:31:15.000
Um, how does the, the role you bit of hope.
00:31:15.000 --> 00:31:29.558
Um, and so, um, when you think coaching, uh, flag football, uh, girls, uh, from, uh, South high North high School.
00:31:29.558 --> 00:31:33.880
Like, how does that help you as a citizen and a member of a community?
00:31:33.880 --> 00:31:36.480
Um, have a little bit of hope.
00:31:36.480 --> 00:32:06.038
Well, I think generally I'm, I'm um, I think really coaching has think, um, getting involved with community has been really doing, I would encourage people outside your comfort zone, maybe Um, but from a hope standpoint, just dealing with this age for the future.
00:32:06.038 --> 00:32:11.848
Um, they, we, we had some talks earlier in the year and they were talking about something about, um.
00:32:11.848 --> 00:32:16.048
They're like, oh, the early two before technology and all that.
00:32:16.048 --> 00:32:19.690
And like, I'm thinking back to, phones and all that.
00:32:19.690 --> 00:32:25.650
And, um, I said they're really, um, again, they're a good group of kids.
00:32:25.650 --> 00:32:34.450
It's like any generation, I think they're young and I'm interested to see what they achieve because just from working with them, they are all very accomplished.
00:32:34.450 --> 00:32:40.048
I'm amazed at how much stuff our they're involved in at that age.
00:32:40.048 --> 00:32:53.650
When I think back to when I was in high school, so it gives me a lot of hope for the future of like, whatever the issues are going to be, they're going to, they're going to find a way to figure it out because they seem to be a very, uh, you know, good, strong group of, of young, young people.
00:32:53.650 --> 00:33:08.170
That's the, the best part of that year after year and knowing But also I, I often reflect on technology to be a Yeah, I just, I can't fathom it.
00:33:08.170 --> 00:33:18.710
So I'm right there with you on It's good because they kind of bring me back to like, I'm like, oh yeah, they don't really remember before cell phones and that I'm like, yeah, we used to, you know, we'd go out and you didn't have a phone with you the whole time.
00:33:18.710 --> 00:33:21.269
So I fondly reflect on it.
00:33:21.269 --> 00:33:22.150
I find it funny.
00:33:22.150 --> 00:33:26.509
They were kind of reminiscing I'm like, well, just leave your There you go.
00:33:26.509 --> 00:33:28.470
So I might take that advice too.
00:33:28.470 --> 00:33:29.028
I'll be patient.
00:33:29.028 --> 00:33:31.868
I'm gonna leave my phone at Um, talk to me about what?
00:33:31.868 --> 00:33:32.828
Leave you hopeful?
00:33:33.828 --> 00:33:35.230
What leaves me hopeful?
00:33:35.230 --> 00:33:58.269
Um, I think it's like trying to You know, I, I, I think back on ago, I had this one student and moved out to Willoughby and she to me, you know, in between And she goes, she looks up at me She goes, I just want to let you It's like I didn't really like you changed that.
00:33:58.269 --> 00:34:01.269
And I was just I didn't know I was like, flabbergasted.
00:34:01.269 --> 00:34:13.518
I was shocked because I just, you're not thinking that you're You're not doing anything But really everything that the teachers, you know, all the way from the main office to the faculty to the staff to the janitors that clean the building.
00:34:13.518 --> 00:34:15.480
I mean, all the way up to you.
00:34:15.480 --> 00:34:32.280
It is a really a team effort, because of the fact that we were And I always hear about those, about the next generation, oh, I mean, they said that about our They said about my parents But somehow we're still here.
00:34:32.280 --> 00:34:33.639
And somehow it always works out.
00:34:33.639 --> 00:34:38.719
And to me, that's kind of like one of those things that reminds me like it everybody's different.
00:34:38.719 --> 00:34:41.800
Like every generation is the same way.
00:34:41.800 --> 00:34:42.840
They're all going to be okay.
00:34:42.840 --> 00:34:47.840
I mean, we made it out okay before technology, uh, our parents did and so on and so forth.
00:34:47.840 --> 00:34:53.679
So I think it's just kind of like one of those is like, don't take yourself too seriously, you know, enjoy the ride while you're here.
00:34:53.679 --> 00:35:09.219
And just remember that at the I mean, we're all in it It's part of the human And it somehow life always has a And so one of the things that I've learned and the perspective I've gained through multiple conversations now is that school and community.
00:35:09.219 --> 00:35:12.300
You can't separate it like school is a reflection of the community.
00:35:12.300 --> 00:35:31.219
And the community then is And so knowing that we've got behalf of our kids every day And it makes the conversations that I'm having, uh, you know, even more, uh, you know, heavy because in the end, kids are counting on us and knowing that we've got great adults in their corner.
00:35:31.219 --> 00:35:37.739
Being a champion makes this, uh, So thank you so much for coming We appreciate your time.
00:35:37.739 --> 00:35:51.780
Appreciate what you do on behalf Um, for those that have listened and continue to view the perspective podcast, we're grateful for your continued contribution, uh, and being part of this ongoing conversation and story.
00:35:51.780 --> 00:35:52.980
Stay tuned for more.
00:00:00.839 --> 00:00:07.559
Welcome to perspectives with Willoughby-Eastlake City School superintendent Doctor Patrick Ward.
00:00:07.559 --> 00:00:26.280
From the football field to the adults work every day to help Officer Buck and coach McCue distinct roles in safety, illustrating how adults support of the classroom.
00:00:27.320 --> 00:00:37.840
Welcome to the Perspectives We believe here in Willoughby Eastlake, that perspective is gained by engaging in conversation and building relationships.
00:00:37.840 --> 00:00:43.880
And so today we have some distinguished guests to join us on the podcast, coach McCue and officer Buck.
00:00:43.880 --> 00:00:51.640
And they're here to talk a school and the impact they have these particular positions.
00:00:51.640 --> 00:00:57.359
And so we'll start to unpack that, but we'll start in the easiest place for the conversation.
00:00:57.359 --> 00:00:59.929
Tell us a little bit about Uh, coach.
00:00:59.929 --> 00:01:01.890
Uh, so, uh, Matt McHugh.
00:01:01.890 --> 00:01:06.890
Um, I've had, uh, two of my uh, the district.
00:01:06.890 --> 00:01:21.890
I have one that's going to be a Um, we've been in the district And, um, you know, I'm a My day job is, uh, I'm the deputy director with the Geauga Park District.
00:01:21.890 --> 00:01:29.530
So, uh, um, coaching's been kind of a nice way to get involved in the community and kind of, um, one of my other passions is sports.
00:01:29.530 --> 00:01:34.049
So it's great to get involved with coaching and, and competition at the high school level.
00:01:34.049 --> 00:01:34.489
Well, welcome.
00:01:34.489 --> 00:01:38.170
Thanks for coming out today to with us today.
00:01:38.170 --> 00:01:45.849
Uh, we're really appreciative of Officer Buck, tell us a little Uh, officer Buck, I'm the Willoughby Middle School resource officer.
00:01:45.849 --> 00:01:48.530
Uh, I've been with the City of Willoughby for about six years now.
00:01:48.530 --> 00:01:52.290
I've been at the school about Uh, absolutely love it there.
00:01:52.290 --> 00:02:04.230
Um, got great administration, Um, and I'm just happy to be Officer Buck, you're coming in Let me just go ahead and throw Okay.
00:02:04.230 --> 00:02:08.870
If you've ever visited Willoughby Middle School, officer Buck knows every student's name.
00:02:08.870 --> 00:02:14.150
He greets every kid every single And there's not one day where we you're not smiling.
00:02:14.150 --> 00:02:19.110
So we appreciate everything you do for our kids here and keeping them safe and building those relationships.
00:02:19.110 --> 00:02:26.628
And that's kind of what we're We're talking about the school outside of the classroom members of our community.
00:02:26.628 --> 00:02:43.870
Uh, and, you know, whether you interact with a school resource interactions are really And so let's, let's just start How did you stumble into flag football and how did that journey begin?
00:02:43.870 --> 00:02:55.949
Yeah, really kind of stumbled So my, uh, my daughter, um, athletics at South, um, her this flag football thing.
00:02:55.949 --> 00:03:00.878
It was kind of just sort of in its infancy about five years ago, and she wanted to start a team.
00:03:00.878 --> 00:03:07.479
So I told her, hey, you know, She took the initiative, reached out to the Browns, got with Mr.
00:03:07.479 --> 00:03:11.360
Patrick, kind of went through all getting a club recognized in that.
00:03:11.360 --> 00:03:26.080
And then she's like, well, you So I said, okay, yeah, I can I, I coach some youth travel I'm very much into, into Hey, flag football, you know, So new.
00:03:26.080 --> 00:03:30.038
Most of the girls that first season, they had all played soccer and basketball with my daughter.
00:03:30.038 --> 00:03:33.120
So it's kind of a good experience to end of their senior year.
00:03:33.120 --> 00:03:47.038
Um, we kind of went into it not I hadn't played flag football intramurals, so I kind of And then, uh, we had a good group of girls that had some unique talents, that speed and quickness that worked really well.
00:03:47.038 --> 00:03:55.378
And we had a really great first Then the next year really kind So it's, it's been a fun, uh, We just finished up.
00:03:55.378 --> 00:04:03.860
So. So when you wind it back This really was a small movement that began with a small group of girls that were interested in starting something new and different.
00:04:03.860 --> 00:04:04.740
Yeah, really.
00:04:04.740 --> 00:04:14.060
I think the year we got involved previous year, I think there The year we involved, I think there was close to twenty six schools.
00:04:14.060 --> 00:04:21.699
Our first season we had twelve Um, this past season, right were at around thirty.
00:04:21.699 --> 00:04:25.620
I think we ended with about team between JV and varsity.
00:04:25.620 --> 00:04:30.220
So yeah, it's really, really grown over the last couple of years as far as just interest and participation.
00:04:30.220 --> 00:04:36.620
And I think Northeast Ohio down to Columbus, there's one hundred and sixty two teams and then there's some teams down in Cincinnati.
00:04:36.620 --> 00:04:49.220
So we're probably pushing close teams already in the state in So it's really grown So is this conversations unfold, We'll unpack a little bit about kind of what some of the highlights of this journey has been.
00:04:49.220 --> 00:04:57.110
Um, because I know it's been Some of the places that, again, this small, simple idea four years ago kind of, you know, has reached.
00:04:57.110 --> 00:04:58.949
So stay tuned.
00:04:58.949 --> 00:05:04.230
Officer Buck, how did you get How did you end up to be in the officer in a middle school?
00:05:04.230 --> 00:05:10.350
Nonetheless, because I'm sure know, be at this level.
00:05:10.350 --> 00:05:15.028
Um, it was actually during the pandemic, I think it was around twenty twenty one or twenty twenty two.
00:05:15.028 --> 00:05:19.910
They were looking for another um, they offered it out there.
00:05:19.910 --> 00:05:30.750
So I kind of just started And then they were looking for And, uh, I, I don't know if it was just the luck or I was the only one that applied for it, but I got the job and, uh, it's been great.
00:05:30.750 --> 00:05:37.189
I think it's just been, it's, expected or planned on being It just kind of just happened.
00:05:37.189 --> 00:05:46.028
But I think like everything I, I've really enjoyed my time I've really got to learn more the kids, to be honest with you.
00:05:46.028 --> 00:05:50.910
And so you're rounding out, No, it's going to be my fifth So fifth year.
00:05:50.910 --> 00:05:51.149
Yeah.
00:05:51.149 --> 00:05:54.720
So like twenty twenty, I think that I started.
00:05:54.720 --> 00:05:56.199
So yeah.
00:05:56.199 --> 00:06:01.920
So you've been there a couple of Yeah, I actually just had my first full class just graduated this year.
00:06:01.920 --> 00:06:10.278
So it was kind of, it was kind them and remembering them when So, so like you just touched on like the universal experience of school, right?
00:06:10.278 --> 00:06:23.199
We see these kids when they're and then we send them out and Um, since we all attend school, like we have these memories of our own schooling experience, is there a teacher that comes to mind?
00:06:23.199 --> 00:06:31.639
Um, top of mind when we say like the impact, uh, in your life, shout out to today.
00:06:31.639 --> 00:06:35.759
I would, uh, I know I didn't go hold that against me.
00:06:35.759 --> 00:06:36.439
We would never.
00:06:36.439 --> 00:06:37.160
Okay.
00:06:37.160 --> 00:06:40.759
Um, I actually graduated from teacher there that we had.
00:06:40.759 --> 00:06:41.759
It was a shop teacher.
00:06:41.759 --> 00:06:44.040
His name was, uh, Mr. Troha.
00:06:44.040 --> 00:06:48.560
He actually played on the Ohio eight championship team.
00:06:48.560 --> 00:06:48.879
Oh, wow.
00:06:48.879 --> 00:06:51.379
Didn't see a lot of playing time, but he didn't let everybody know.
00:06:51.379 --> 00:06:56.180
You know what the big nugget he Uh, but he was really great.
00:06:56.180 --> 00:07:28.939
00:07:28.939 --> 00:07:40.500
And this guy's been teaching for So I kind of like, it's kind of of took from that when I was know, you're, you're around them I kind of want to like talk to somebody as an authority figure.
00:07:40.500 --> 00:07:43.899
And I think that kind of, um, you know, speaks for itself, hopefully.
00:07:43.899 --> 00:07:51.709
Well, I'll have to say you do an exceptional job at that, honoring not only Mr. Troja, but I get to see it firsthand every single day.
00:07:51.709 --> 00:07:57.189
And so like, just being able to connect with kids and connect with any, you know, person that's in front of you is important.
00:07:57.189 --> 00:07:59.310
So what about you, coach?
00:07:59.310 --> 00:08:04.230
I would say probably, um, Mr.
00:08:04.230 --> 00:08:09.709
macroeconomics teacher back at what officer Buck was saying.
00:08:09.709 --> 00:08:12.990
Probably one of the first teachers really stands out in my mind.
00:08:12.990 --> 00:08:19.709
Um, really, I mean, made with the students.
00:08:19.709 --> 00:08:26.790
Um, probably one of the teachers I remember actually pushed me a little bit more, um, you know, pushed me to take macroeconomics.
00:08:26.790 --> 00:08:39.350
Um, you know, at a time, probably school wise, I wasn't really pushing myself in some areas and then also pushed me to do an experience called lab at the time, which is like a mini kind of business school camp at Lake Erie College over the summer.
00:08:39.350 --> 00:08:41.149
Um, and really great experience.
00:08:41.149 --> 00:08:47.000
So kind of just stands out as somebody who kind of gave me a little bit of nudge maybe when I needed it, which, which helped out.
00:08:47.000 --> 00:09:13.720
00:09:13.720 --> 00:09:24.320
Yeah, I think, I mean, really to especially team sports, you know, again, it's I, I grew up, outside doing stuff.
00:09:24.320 --> 00:09:31.360
So I think it's great kind of get involved in something where you can get out, participate in something with your classmates in that.
00:09:31.360 --> 00:09:44.120
And again, really with team love about flag football is it You know, it's it's different than maybe some of the individual sports like golf and that where you're kind of out there with tennis doing your thing.
00:09:44.120 --> 00:09:48.340
This is where everyone's going together and do their part.
00:09:48.340 --> 00:10:05.460
Um, and really from just a it's a relatively new sport, I We're getting girls who, you different backgrounds in the played a lot of competitive they're all kind of starting at It's new to all of them.
00:10:05.460 --> 00:10:09.740
So like the last couple of years, it's been great to see kind of how everyone's progressing.
00:10:09.740 --> 00:10:12.899
Just like fundamentally, even the end of the season.
00:10:12.899 --> 00:10:26.899
So I think it's a great opportunity for confidence to be built, just trying something new and, you know, developing those relationships as part of a team I think is really, really, um, great for the athletes and, and kind of again, helps build confidence.
00:10:26.899 --> 00:10:37.298
And I think going forward in of team sports help you deal and how you overcome things and you know, as you grow up.
00:10:37.298 --> 00:10:41.259
And so would you, would it be fair to say that you're surprised?
00:10:41.259 --> 00:10:49.269
You'd be surprised by how evolved, and how quickly you of this mountain.
00:10:49.269 --> 00:10:53.590
You know, talk to that journey a pretty, pretty remarkable.
00:10:53.590 --> 00:10:53.990
Yeah.
00:10:53.990 --> 00:10:55.950
I mean, really, we always laugh.
00:10:55.950 --> 00:11:02.548
I mean, our first practice, we team just talking, you know, we win a game.
00:11:02.548 --> 00:11:09.590
And really the first I think we actually were two and two before we kind of went on a on a run after that.
00:11:09.590 --> 00:11:15.389
Um, but really, um, you know, like it just happened fast.
00:11:15.389 --> 00:11:20.668
And then we came back the next freshmen that were on the team.
00:11:20.668 --> 00:11:27.269
And that's the group that's now that are juniors, and to work with.
00:11:27.269 --> 00:11:35.629
Um, just being around the the girls is really kind of, um, just been great for me to kind of see like how they approach things.
00:11:35.629 --> 00:11:39.750
Um, they're really into it game and that.
00:11:39.750 --> 00:11:45.730
So, um, yeah, fundamentally, um, it's been fun kind of teaching fundamentals, but seeing how far we've progressed.
00:11:45.730 --> 00:11:50.250
You know, last year was a really kind of memorable season this season.
00:11:50.250 --> 00:11:57.490
Um, we didn't quite end the way really remarkable season, our of the four years.
00:11:57.490 --> 00:12:17.970
So, so a lot of positive things But you know, last year kind of expectations to kind of be one So, so flipping now down to the middle school where some of these kids are beginning to explore the things that they're interested in, like, what's it like outside the classroom, uh, to have it be able to build those connections and to get to know kids.
00:12:17.970 --> 00:12:23.330
And where are the places during the day that you find that happen most organically in your role.
00:12:23.330 --> 00:12:23.730
Ooh.
00:12:23.730 --> 00:12:24.570
Good question.
00:12:24.570 --> 00:12:37.528
Um, I think it's just really, changes, you know, because then I mean, we have four minutes So seeing them kind of in their you can't have phones anymore.
00:12:37.528 --> 00:12:40.610
So they're always like trying to catch up on what's going on in between classes.
00:12:40.610 --> 00:12:49.538
So just seeing them like in the, with their friends kind of, you really just being kids.
00:12:49.538 --> 00:12:55.298
I think I, I feel like, um, that I'm seeing.
00:12:55.298 --> 00:12:57.500
I'm not seeing them in class because you're having supervision.
00:12:57.500 --> 00:13:08.500
They're learning, they're trying to have a structured, uh, you know, model there, but just kind of walking through classes, you know, walking during class changes, going through the commons, going to the cafeteria for lunches.
00:13:08.500 --> 00:13:14.220
Um, I, I actually see them being being the most real for me.
00:13:14.220 --> 00:13:15.139
Yeah.
00:13:15.139 --> 00:13:22.340
So one of the unique things get a whole new group coming in group kind of move up to South Correct.
00:13:22.340 --> 00:13:30.500
So for those incoming sixth graders, is there any words of wisdom, advice, uh, any, uh, you know, nuggets that you can share with them?
00:13:30.500 --> 00:13:35.019
Um, because we're going to be at this in before you know it, right?
00:13:35.019 --> 00:14:32.548
00:14:32.548 --> 00:14:39.370
But this is where you get a little bit older, you get a little bit more responsibility, but also with that, you do get a little bit more freedom, a freedom, a little bit more independence.
00:14:39.370 --> 00:15:02.129
00:15:02.129 --> 00:15:08.528
And then, you know, within a few you'll get your, you'll get how things work.
00:15:08.528 --> 00:15:11.528
And, you know, you just kind of try to mold them the best way you can.
00:15:11.528 --> 00:15:30.690
And they kind of just fall into It's one of the best things You know, twenty six years is kids come to school and, you come in sometimes hot, but they They learn, you know, the new And then hopefully they get involved in, you know, something that, you know, lights them on fire, right?
00:15:30.690 --> 00:15:38.580
Um, coach, when you think about, this team And how did you help?
00:15:38.580 --> 00:15:46.820
Um, again, this group of, uh, adversity that comes with to the big, uh, the game.
00:15:46.820 --> 00:15:47.778
Because I'm not mistaken.
00:15:47.778 --> 00:15:49.740
You got to the big game one Yeah.
00:15:49.740 --> 00:15:57.418
Like, tell us about how that can become universal for, for, Yeah.
00:15:57.418 --> 00:16:04.620
And that's really, I mean, with, with sports in general, I think a lot of the, um, things happen very quickly.
00:16:04.620 --> 00:16:13.700
So like dealing with adversity coaches, we try to kind of it's okay to fail.
00:16:13.700 --> 00:16:30.058
Failing, learning, you know, Um, you know, so we try to have outlook that, you know, we'd trying and, you know, in, in any down on a play.
00:16:30.058 --> 00:16:31.500
Somebody runs the wrong route.
00:16:31.500 --> 00:16:34.019
You know, there's always something that's going to happen.
00:16:34.019 --> 00:16:42.190
So how you deal with that and going to say a lot more about wise and core value wise.
00:16:42.190 --> 00:17:03.788
Um, a lot of things and we standpoint, try to keep things So, um, like last year, our big just worry about the play right practice, worry about what we're ahead of yourself, not worrying You can't really, really do anything about that or control that.
00:17:03.788 --> 00:17:11.588
So our philosophy is always just keep focusing on the now and positive outlook on things.
00:17:11.588 --> 00:17:15.788
We tell the players three things your teammates you care.
00:17:15.788 --> 00:17:32.710
And I think when you break that you meet people, whether it's in environment, those are the kind away, you know, is this somebody Do they care about me and are we So that's kind of what we focus on when we've run into those situations where we've had adversity.
00:17:32.710 --> 00:17:37.730
I think the girls have handled it really well because we try to keep things very kind of even keel.
00:17:37.730 --> 00:17:41.690
Um, again, if somebody makes a great play, it's like, it's great to go celebrate with your teammates.
00:17:41.690 --> 00:17:44.650
But again, you know, we're just kind of getting ready for the next play.
00:17:44.650 --> 00:17:48.568
So we always try to keep it very focused on right now and what we're doing.
00:17:48.568 --> 00:17:52.890
And you know again, even even talk about the end goal.
00:17:52.890 --> 00:17:54.288
It was just game by game.
00:17:54.288 --> 00:17:55.568
Let's focus on that.
00:17:55.568 --> 00:18:00.088
So that's sort of what we kind of instill and try to keep working on.
00:18:00.088 --> 00:18:10.048
Well, wonderful lessons when you mantra, you know, because you South playing athletics and that That translates to career.
00:18:10.048 --> 00:18:16.170
That translates to just life in general, you know, do, do, do the people that you interact with, you know, do they care about you?
00:18:16.170 --> 00:18:24.568
Um, and then are they genuine and investment and get through Um, you know, I think about think about our parents.
00:18:24.568 --> 00:18:30.690
We've got, you know, um, parents resource, their children.
00:18:30.690 --> 00:18:50.618
Um, and if we think about the sometimes joining athletics at coming to middle school, like parents and that can make So we like to always, you know, ask from perspective of coach and parent perspective of school resource officer and member of the community.
00:18:50.618 --> 00:19:04.500
Like what advice if you could you give parents as they're kind think about athletics or middle school, um, to help kind Uh, we'll start with you, Like.
00:19:04.500 --> 00:19:04.778
Like what?
00:19:04.778 --> 00:19:06.338
Advice directly to parents.
00:19:06.338 --> 00:19:12.740
Oh, um, two things I think I can think of off the top of my head would probably one would be patience.
00:19:12.740 --> 00:19:27.220
I mean, I realized when I first those things where, um, I had, I adjust my thinking in regards to their childhood through my way things were.
00:19:27.220 --> 00:19:28.538
But everybody's different.
00:19:28.538 --> 00:19:40.358
So I think for me, it taught me, uh, you know, as an officer to be a little bit more patient, which I think I think, uh, adults should kind of take to heart because they are transitioning, they're still being developed.
00:19:40.358 --> 00:19:47.960
They're so physically, they're mentally, emotionally, there's a the same time.
00:19:47.960 --> 00:19:51.318
Uh, besides patience I'd probably say, you know, be invested.
00:19:51.318 --> 00:19:55.278
I think you need to invest in what's going on?
00:19:55.278 --> 00:19:55.960
How was your day?
00:19:55.960 --> 00:19:59.000
I mean, it's easy to kind of We're all busy.
00:19:59.000 --> 00:20:08.318
We all have things going on and you kind of just forget about, you know, you have work, you have life, you have to go grocery shopping, you have to come home, get dinner or extracurricular activities like sports.
00:20:08.318 --> 00:20:11.759
But, you know, ask about, ask what's going on.
00:20:11.759 --> 00:20:29.048
I think if you really kind of surprised at what they tell you clam up a little bit, especially But I think they do eventually And I think it's I think it's your job as a parent to kind of be patient, but also try to pry just enough to get something out of them.
00:20:29.048 --> 00:20:31.490
So what you're saying is, when I go home today, I should be patient.
00:20:31.490 --> 00:20:34.328
And I should ask a lot of Tell Anthony and I got it.
00:20:34.328 --> 00:20:35.808
I'm going to get after it today.
00:20:35.808 --> 00:20:38.890
That was my it was my absolutely officer buck says I got to be patient.
00:20:38.890 --> 00:20:52.730
But what great advice for the middle level, transitioning we're going to take care of We've got good adults who care home, be patient and invest in their day, right?
00:20:52.730 --> 00:20:57.730
Um, I mean, definitely sage No patience.
00:20:57.730 --> 00:20:58.288
Definitely.
00:20:58.288 --> 00:20:59.088
Definitely agree.
00:20:59.088 --> 00:21:09.690
Patience and communication is You know, from that standpoint with parents, I'd also say, you know, let them advocate for themselves.
00:21:09.690 --> 00:21:36.700
Um, you know, when they get to further on in their high school let them fail, especially like of times today, everyone gets and that, but, you know, really things not going your way and And I think that's going to help times, you know, just parents can do something to help.
00:21:36.700 --> 00:21:40.259
And I think really, it's good through that process.
00:21:40.259 --> 00:21:44.259
That's, that's part of the learning process and, and letting them work through some adversity.
00:21:44.259 --> 00:22:04.578
So I would say, don't be afraid Um, you know, also don't feel um, take control of situations, things aren't going their way or again, kind of let them work it'll hopefully pay off as they, I love that you said that because I didn't even think about that.
00:22:04.578 --> 00:22:11.460
It's about the fact that something that we can all you I mean, it's part of life.
00:22:11.460 --> 00:22:12.538
It's not just about learning.
00:22:12.538 --> 00:22:18.259
It's about it's about growing And you only succeed when you from your mistakes.
00:22:18.259 --> 00:22:20.180
So that was that was good.
00:22:20.180 --> 00:22:21.098
I should have come up with that.
00:22:21.098 --> 00:22:24.500
Well, this is good because this is a theme we heard in a previous podcast.
00:22:24.500 --> 00:22:51.278
00:22:51.278 --> 00:23:14.118
Like this is where you pick up So thinking about those big the perspectives and roles that what, what is the advice would give if, if you had, you and they're like, I want to know I'm getting started on this Like, what's the big two pointers that you would give to kids?
00:23:14.118 --> 00:23:29.650
Um. I think one of them is kind parents and children is would be Kids at that age are still learning more about themselves.
00:23:29.650 --> 00:23:51.088
But I think it's also with technology and, and the creature always news at your fingertips They're expecting things to They're expecting things And it's like, you kind of kind out of sixth, put it in a little bit, you know, get back gears a little bit.
00:23:51.088 --> 00:23:55.930
But I think it's telling them that it's okay to learn about yourself.
00:23:55.930 --> 00:23:59.368
It's not going to be the all, built in a day.
00:23:59.368 --> 00:24:19.328
It's not going to be fixed in It's just you have to let things And I think when you have that a you'll, um, I think you'll do, But the other one I would say is little bit of grace because it said in regards to failing.
00:24:19.328 --> 00:24:22.650
You know, it's they're so hard They really want to do well.
00:24:22.650 --> 00:24:30.700
And there's a lot of pressure social media and where they want they want to go.
00:24:30.700 --> 00:24:33.660
And it's like, you know, you got okay to fail.
00:24:33.660 --> 00:24:36.380
Give yourself a little bit of But it's a process.
00:24:36.380 --> 00:24:36.980
It's a journey.
00:24:36.980 --> 00:24:46.578
You know, it's not about finally It's the journey of getting You know, it's not the So I would tell them a little bit of patience, a little bit of grace.
00:24:46.578 --> 00:24:55.019
And I think you're going to be I love that idea of giving our themselves some grace.
00:24:55.019 --> 00:24:55.460
Right?
00:24:55.460 --> 00:25:01.900
With technology and the standards that kids hold themselves to and the access they have, it's a really great reminder.
00:25:01.900 --> 00:25:14.338
Um, as you're entering, whether it's the middle school years, the high school years, or whether you're going to choose to go compete, you know, in a sport that's brand new and hasn't been around for a long time, but certainly has made a big splash.
00:25:14.338 --> 00:25:21.160
So, so what's the advice I would say kind of going off of that theme there is try something new.
00:25:21.160 --> 00:25:26.838
Um, you know, if you would have I'd be coaching high school flag football, I would have been shocked.
00:25:26.838 --> 00:25:28.440
Um, try something new.
00:25:28.440 --> 00:25:42.200
I, I think especially, you know, are so many clubs, so many sure at north too that um, get If you're not familiar with try something new.
00:25:42.200 --> 00:25:47.519
And um, you might find that it's realize that that you were into.
00:25:47.519 --> 00:26:00.640
And also I would say, you know, don't be afraid to, uh, you know, again, in the world we live in with, with, uh, phones and technology and everything, um, don't be afraid just to kind of meet some new people too, and, and have those conversations.
00:26:00.640 --> 00:26:09.720
And if it's somebody, you know, as a freshman, you know, you may different, different school, to make that contact.
00:26:09.720 --> 00:26:19.400
And again, I think those are all that those high school years are kind of, um, learn a little bit Yeah.
00:26:19.400 --> 00:26:28.690
To our listeners and viewers, like we really don't let our guests talk to each other from podcast to podcast, but the themes that keep coming up over and over again, it's pretty, pretty remarkable.
00:26:28.690 --> 00:26:32.608
This idea of connection, this of getting involved.
00:26:32.608 --> 00:26:48.368
We've heard that theme come up a good reminder to parents, to involved, um, right now in the And what coach said is especially about talking to people, I think that's critical right now with those social skills that we're kind of losing focus on.
00:26:48.368 --> 00:26:58.650
I mean, there's a lot of messaging, but there's nobody's Nobody's really doing any kind of putting themselves out there and being uncomfortable, you know?
00:26:58.650 --> 00:27:03.568
And sometimes you have to be uncomfortable to be successful or to find things out about yourself.
00:27:03.568 --> 00:27:10.009
So I think those social skills at that age are critical to remind your kids like, hey, not everything's going to be through a screen.
00:27:10.009 --> 00:27:12.808
We like to say it's get comfortable with being uncomfortable.
00:27:12.808 --> 00:27:13.288
Exactly.
00:27:13.288 --> 00:27:14.769
That's exactly.
00:27:14.769 --> 00:27:20.868
You have to, you have to get out eventually be successful because think you just become stagnant.
00:27:20.868 --> 00:27:21.348
Yeah.
00:27:21.348 --> 00:27:24.910
So like athletics naturally puts students in that environment, right?
00:27:24.910 --> 00:27:27.710
Where you force them to be do something new.
00:27:27.710 --> 00:27:31.150
You put them into the game.
00:27:31.150 --> 00:27:35.950
I think the same is true about and the adults they meet that Right.
00:27:35.950 --> 00:27:36.390
Right.
00:27:36.390 --> 00:27:45.509
It's those opportunities where just the broader community, how type of interactions.
00:27:45.509 --> 00:27:56.470
So I'm going to kind of ask Like when you think about girls like football in particular, like it's kind of really exploded at the state level and it's exploding at the national level.
00:27:56.470 --> 00:28:08.108
So what accounts for that so I think there's a couple I think, you know, in the US, football has has always been very popular.
00:28:08.108 --> 00:28:10.190
I think Northeast Ohio.
00:28:10.190 --> 00:28:13.588
You know, when you think of football comes to mind.
00:28:13.588 --> 00:28:20.720
Um, so I think just from a popularity standpoint, the opportunity for girls to participate in that I think is huge.
00:28:20.720 --> 00:28:28.720
I also think to the NFL is really behind it, and they've invested a lot in it to help promote it, to get ready for the Olympics.
00:28:28.720 --> 00:28:41.440
So I think those two things have But I think specifically in Northeast Ohio, I think it's just when when I think of, you know, Northeast Ohio, it's it's definitely football's kind of like the number one sport that that people seem to gravitate towards.
00:28:41.440 --> 00:29:00.358
So I think realistically, just the girls to compete in that for again, that kind of ties into You know, all of us growing up, whether it was Lake Catholic or mentor, you know, a lot of those those cities and areas identified with, you know, their their high school football teams and that.
00:29:00.358 --> 00:29:06.680
So I think girls having that opportunity, I think there's that connection to the larger community, some of the success we've had.
00:29:06.680 --> 00:29:15.000
I said, it's really interesting you know, when you're out and And and it's people I didn't girls flag football.
00:29:15.000 --> 00:29:18.930
So I mean, that's where I think, um, that's kind of part of the growth.
00:29:18.930 --> 00:29:27.288
And I think nationally too, it's just, you know, if you take that across the country, that's where you're seeing that kind of growth just at that sort of grassroots level.
00:29:27.288 --> 00:29:40.808
And, you know, now it seems to So it's been a source of pride district, kind of a team start was and the opportunities that, for our students.
00:29:40.808 --> 00:29:46.769
Uh, you know, when you pair that with the lessons we talked about today, like it was pretty remarkable opportunity.
00:29:46.769 --> 00:29:54.410
And, you know, Willoughby, Ohio, uh, you know, you guys took an scale it out.
00:29:54.410 --> 00:30:04.568
And that's, that's what it's all And we've heard that theme over Um, and throughout various, uh, and, and lake and mentor are Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:30:04.568 --> 00:30:04.970
Yes.
00:30:04.970 --> 00:30:05.608
There you go.
00:30:05.608 --> 00:30:07.730
Well, well, I guess, I guess Right.
00:30:07.730 --> 00:30:09.328
We'll, we'll roll with that.
00:30:09.328 --> 00:30:17.588
Um, and we're all in this know um North, I think they're year of flag football.
00:30:17.588 --> 00:30:21.430
And, you know, we do a joint them every season.
00:30:21.430 --> 00:30:24.950
Um last year their coach reached we're starting on new.
00:30:24.950 --> 00:30:33.230
And I said, it's been really think from a district memorable as far as fun We'll work out together.
00:30:33.230 --> 00:30:40.990
We'll do a lot of, um, skill that, and then we'll scrimmage south, they have that rivalry.
00:30:40.990 --> 00:30:47.548
But I said it's been a good we're practicing together, um, girls seem to enjoy it.
00:30:47.548 --> 00:30:50.548
So again, it's like a lot of these kids were playing youth sports together.
00:30:50.548 --> 00:30:54.470
And it's kind of neat to see them kind of back together, you know, practicing and working out together.
00:30:54.470 --> 00:30:58.710
So it's been really neat to see Awesome.
00:30:58.710 --> 00:31:02.348
So as we start to wind this conversation down, there's two questions we always ask toward the end.
00:31:02.348 --> 00:31:10.509
One is what leaves you most So generally speaking, when you think about the state of everything you're encounter with kids.
00:31:10.509 --> 00:31:15.000
Um, how does the, the role you bit of hope.
00:31:15.000 --> 00:31:29.558
Um, and so, um, when you think coaching, uh, flag football, uh, girls, uh, from, uh, South high North high School.
00:31:29.558 --> 00:31:33.880
Like, how does that help you as a citizen and a member of a community?
00:31:33.880 --> 00:31:36.480
Um, have a little bit of hope.
00:31:36.480 --> 00:32:06.038
Well, I think generally I'm, I'm um, I think really coaching has think, um, getting involved with community has been really doing, I would encourage people outside your comfort zone, maybe Um, but from a hope standpoint, just dealing with this age for the future.
00:32:06.038 --> 00:32:11.848
Um, they, we, we had some talks earlier in the year and they were talking about something about, um.
00:32:11.848 --> 00:32:16.048
They're like, oh, the early two before technology and all that.
00:32:16.048 --> 00:32:19.690
And like, I'm thinking back to, phones and all that.
00:32:19.690 --> 00:32:25.650
And, um, I said they're really, um, again, they're a good group of kids.
00:32:25.650 --> 00:32:34.450
It's like any generation, I think they're young and I'm interested to see what they achieve because just from working with them, they are all very accomplished.
00:32:34.450 --> 00:32:40.048
I'm amazed at how much stuff our they're involved in at that age.
00:32:40.048 --> 00:32:53.650
When I think back to when I was in high school, so it gives me a lot of hope for the future of like, whatever the issues are going to be, they're going to, they're going to find a way to figure it out because they seem to be a very, uh, you know, good, strong group of, of young, young people.
00:32:53.650 --> 00:33:08.170
That's the, the best part of that year after year and knowing But also I, I often reflect on technology to be a Yeah, I just, I can't fathom it.
00:33:08.170 --> 00:33:18.710
So I'm right there with you on It's good because they kind of bring me back to like, I'm like, oh yeah, they don't really remember before cell phones and that I'm like, yeah, we used to, you know, we'd go out and you didn't have a phone with you the whole time.
00:33:18.710 --> 00:33:21.269
So I fondly reflect on it.
00:33:21.269 --> 00:33:22.150
I find it funny.
00:33:22.150 --> 00:33:26.509
They were kind of reminiscing I'm like, well, just leave your There you go.
00:33:26.509 --> 00:33:28.470
So I might take that advice too.
00:33:28.470 --> 00:33:29.028
I'll be patient.
00:33:29.028 --> 00:33:31.868
I'm gonna leave my phone at Um, talk to me about what?
00:33:31.868 --> 00:33:32.828
Leave you hopeful?
00:33:33.828 --> 00:33:35.230
What leaves me hopeful?
00:33:35.230 --> 00:33:58.269
Um, I think it's like trying to You know, I, I, I think back on ago, I had this one student and moved out to Willoughby and she to me, you know, in between And she goes, she looks up at me She goes, I just want to let you It's like I didn't really like you changed that.
00:33:58.269 --> 00:34:01.269
And I was just I didn't know I was like, flabbergasted.
00:34:01.269 --> 00:34:13.518
I was shocked because I just, you're not thinking that you're You're not doing anything But really everything that the teachers, you know, all the way from the main office to the faculty to the staff to the janitors that clean the building.
00:34:13.518 --> 00:34:15.480
I mean, all the way up to you.
00:34:15.480 --> 00:34:32.280
It is a really a team effort, because of the fact that we were And I always hear about those, about the next generation, oh, I mean, they said that about our They said about my parents But somehow we're still here.
00:34:32.280 --> 00:34:33.639
And somehow it always works out.
00:34:33.639 --> 00:34:38.719
And to me, that's kind of like one of those things that reminds me like it everybody's different.
00:34:38.719 --> 00:34:41.800
Like every generation is the same way.
00:34:41.800 --> 00:34:42.840
They're all going to be okay.
00:34:42.840 --> 00:34:47.840
I mean, we made it out okay before technology, uh, our parents did and so on and so forth.
00:34:47.840 --> 00:34:53.679
So I think it's just kind of like one of those is like, don't take yourself too seriously, you know, enjoy the ride while you're here.
00:34:53.679 --> 00:35:09.219
And just remember that at the I mean, we're all in it It's part of the human And it somehow life always has a And so one of the things that I've learned and the perspective I've gained through multiple conversations now is that school and community.
00:35:09.219 --> 00:35:12.300
You can't separate it like school is a reflection of the community.
00:35:12.300 --> 00:35:31.219
And the community then is And so knowing that we've got behalf of our kids every day And it makes the conversations that I'm having, uh, you know, even more, uh, you know, heavy because in the end, kids are counting on us and knowing that we've got great adults in their corner.
00:35:31.219 --> 00:35:37.739
Being a champion makes this, uh, So thank you so much for coming We appreciate your time.
