00:00:00.080 --> 00:00:05.919
Then the next year I started having anxiety and panic attacks, and I was like always a very laid-back person.
00:00:06.080 --> 00:00:07.440
I was like, where did that come from?
00:00:07.919 --> 00:00:17.359
Chondriac until you actually figure out what's wrong with you, what's been going on, and then you make some changes, and then you feel amazing again.
00:00:17.600 --> 00:00:27.199
Today we're exploring a health journey that so many women quietly experience, feeling anxious, exhausted, or genuinely unwell while being told that their labs are normal.
00:00:27.359 --> 00:00:37.439
We're going to discuss Hashimoto's, IBS, anxiety, nutrient deficiencies, thyroid antibodies, ANA testing, and how to determine which tests are actually worth pursuing.
00:00:37.600 --> 00:00:41.679
Most importantly, we're going to answer the question many women are left asking.
00:00:41.840 --> 00:00:44.640
I have all these results, but where do I begin?
00:00:44.960 --> 00:00:52.079
Just a disclaimer, this conversation is intended for education and is not a substitute a substitute for individualized medical care.
00:00:52.320 --> 00:00:58.479
Please consult a qualified healthcare professional before changing your medication supplement, diet, or treatment plan.
00:00:58.719 --> 00:01:00.079
Today's guest is Dr.
00:01:00.240 --> 00:01:01.280
Bell Dr.
00:01:01.439 --> 00:01:01.759
Bell.
00:01:02.000 --> 00:01:02.320
Dr.
00:01:02.479 --> 00:01:10.959
Isabella Wentz, a clinical pharmacist, internationally recognized Hashimoto's expert and New York Times bestseller author.
00:01:11.120 --> 00:01:15.680
After receiving her Doctor of Pharmacy degree at just 23, Dr.
00:01:15.840 --> 00:01:22.319
Wentz built a career in clinical pharmacology, medication safety, and complex case investigation.
00:01:22.719 --> 00:01:29.200
But when she was diagnosed with Hashimoto's thyroiditis in 2009, her work became deeply personal.
00:01:29.439 --> 00:01:40.159
Frustrated by the limited information available about lifestyle interventions, she made it her mission to investigate the underlying factors that may contribute to thyroid symptoms and autoimmunity.
00:01:40.319 --> 00:01:52.000
Today, she combines her expertise in pharmacology with training in functional medicine to help people understand the connections among thyroid health, digestive health, nutrition, stress, and lifestyle.
00:01:52.239 --> 00:01:57.120
She is the author of several best-selling books, which I love, and we will discuss the core five.
00:01:57.280 --> 00:01:57.599
Dr.
00:01:57.680 --> 00:02:00.640
Isabella Wentz, welcome to Peaceover Panic.
00:02:01.120 --> 00:02:02.879
Taylor, thank you so much for having me.
00:02:03.359 --> 00:02:05.760
What a joy and an honor to be here with you.
00:02:06.319 --> 00:02:09.759
Yeah, so I first kind of want to st like stumble upon how I found you.
00:02:09.919 --> 00:02:13.919
I was telling her before we started recording that um she is my celebrity.
00:02:14.080 --> 00:02:17.199
A lot of people see like, oh, Justin Bieber or Hailey Bieber, right?
00:02:17.280 --> 00:02:17.919
Like they love that.
00:02:18.000 --> 00:02:18.879
Like, no, it's her.
00:02:18.960 --> 00:02:22.639
Like I was, my heart was like kind of racing before this because I've just loved your work.
00:02:22.800 --> 00:02:28.000
In 2020, basically, my primary care doctor tested my ANA and TPO antibodies.
00:02:28.080 --> 00:02:31.840
And at the time, I'd never even heard of these things and both came back positive.
00:02:32.080 --> 00:02:38.560
So she did what they do and she referred referred me to an endocrinologist, and that appointment lasted probably about five minutes.
00:02:38.800 --> 00:02:47.439
I was told that because my thyroid hormone levels were normal, my thyroid was fine and that I shouldn't worry about the positive ANA or thyroid antibodies.
00:02:47.599 --> 00:02:52.159
I left feeling incredibly confused and frustrated because I didn't feel well.
00:02:52.319 --> 00:03:06.319
And I kind of always had this thing like, yes, I have anxiety, and yeah, I kept being told anxiety, but I couldn't understand why evidence of thyroid autoimmunity seemingly didn't matter as long as my thyroid was still producing uh hormones that were within normal range.
00:03:06.479 --> 00:03:12.400
And so it felt like I was being told, hey, you're just gonna have to wait until there's a problem significant enough to treat.
00:03:12.560 --> 00:03:16.240
And I was so young and didn't know how to advocate for myself the way I do now.
00:03:16.400 --> 00:03:23.360
And so a few years later, I found this wonderfully compassionate rheumatologist who ordered an advice panel and some additional testing.
00:03:23.439 --> 00:03:31.520
And my ANA was still positive and the TPOs actually got higher and the TGAB, and then my HSCRP was like a two.
00:03:31.759 --> 00:03:42.240
And so that question actually all eventually led me to your work because a rheumatologist, she can only like tell me, like, hey, you're dealing with this, but she can't really treat the thyroid, like it's not her thing.
00:03:42.319 --> 00:03:43.520
So I was like, where do I go?
00:03:43.680 --> 00:03:46.960
Because like that endocrinologist was like, hey, I can't help you.
00:03:47.199 --> 00:03:55.120
So I feel like since then I've been making all these changes and like trying to look into things and kind of going one by one, but that's mainly how I found you.
00:03:55.199 --> 00:04:18.959
And so I think my first question, and I think this is a lot of people's question who are sitting in my place as someone who isn't an expert in this, is if I were if I were sitting across from you as someone who doesn't feel well and has it like they know in their soul that they do not feel well, they have gut issues, they have thyroid antibodies, they have a positive ANA, nutrient uh deficiencies unexplained, but their thyroid is in range, maybe.
00:04:19.199 --> 00:04:21.120
And where do they go?
00:04:21.279 --> 00:04:22.480
Where are they told to go?
00:04:22.639 --> 00:04:27.199
Like, I don't, I think there's such a disconnect in like being given all these lab results.
00:04:27.279 --> 00:04:29.040
And then it's like, what do we do?
00:04:30.160 --> 00:04:31.519
It's such a challenge.
00:04:31.600 --> 00:04:48.720
And so many young women, myself included, have gone through similar journeys where they're told that their symptoms are all in their head and they're just getting older, or this is what stress looks like, and we can't really do anything for you until your thyroid burns itself out, right?
00:04:48.959 --> 00:04:58.879
And I feel like conventional medicine doesn't necessarily appreciate the role that thyroid antibodies have on our well-being, right?
00:04:59.199 --> 00:05:12.879
The research shows that thyroid antibodies, even in the absence of any changes in thyroid function, are going to be associated with higher levels of anxiety, mood disorders, multiple miscarriages.
00:05:13.040 --> 00:05:20.800
I mean, the list goes on and on and on of the many symptoms we can experience just from having those elevated thyroid antibodies.
00:05:21.120 --> 00:05:31.600
And conventional medicine just says, well, come back next year, we'll check your thyroid function again, and we'll put you on some thyroid meds once your thyroid burns itself out.
00:05:31.680 --> 00:05:39.600
And so my my professional journey and personal journey was, hey, I've got thyroid antibodies in the 2000 range.
00:05:39.759 --> 00:05:41.120
I feel terrible.
00:05:41.439 --> 00:05:44.800
What can I do to make myself feel human again?
00:05:44.959 --> 00:05:47.600
Is there anything I can do to reduce those thyroid antibodies?
00:05:47.920 --> 00:05:51.920
Can I do anything to stop the progression of the condition, right?
00:05:52.240 --> 00:06:04.959
And so I would say if you're a woman and you have these elevated thyroid antibodies and a lot of symptoms, I first want to validate you and tell you that the symptoms are not all in your head.
00:06:05.120 --> 00:06:09.439
The thyroid antibodies do play a role in how you're gonna feel.
00:06:09.680 --> 00:06:17.040
So thyroid antibodies, when they're elevated, they're gonna cause a breakdown of your thyroid gland tissue.
00:06:17.199 --> 00:06:24.319
This can cause a transient hyperthyroidism when you have too much thyroid hormone in your system.
00:06:24.399 --> 00:06:29.120
And so you can become anxious, you can have panic attacks, you can have palpitations.
00:06:29.279 --> 00:06:32.079
Um, hair loss is also a common symptom.
00:06:32.319 --> 00:06:44.480
And then as that gets cleared out of your system, you might have a transient hypothyroidism where you feel sluggish and maybe depressed, maybe you're gaining weight, maybe you're tired, maybe you're constipated.
00:06:44.639 --> 00:06:54.399
And then the cycle kind of comes back as your thyroid gland tries to compensate and make more thyroid hormone, and then your immune system starts destroying the thyroid gland again.
00:06:54.480 --> 00:06:56.480
So it's a bit of a vicious cycle.
00:06:56.720 --> 00:07:06.399
Luckily, there are a lot of things we can do by ourselves, working with nutritionists, reading books, maybe working with some more integrative healthcare professionals.
00:07:06.560 --> 00:07:16.319
There are plenty of practitioners these days that have studied functional medicine, and they'll ask the question, not like, what condition do you have?
00:07:16.480 --> 00:07:22.160
What lab is out of balance, but what can you do to make yourself feel better and how do you get yourself back in balance?
00:07:22.480 --> 00:07:35.759
So my primary focus initially is to focus on nutrient deficiencies and nutrition, because there are recognized nutrient deficiencies that can help a woman feel less anxious when she has a thyroid condition.
00:07:35.920 --> 00:07:43.279
And they work to reduce anxiety, reduce thyroid antibodies, reduce hair loss, reduce the progression of the autoimmune condition.
00:07:43.360 --> 00:07:45.120
And I'm like, okay, why not?
00:07:45.279 --> 00:07:47.600
Why doesn't everybody have access to this information?
00:07:47.759 --> 00:07:53.600
So we can get into some of the key nutritional recommendations that I would make if that's helpful.
00:07:54.160 --> 00:07:54.560
Yeah.
00:07:54.800 --> 00:07:57.519
So I actually, okay, I'm trying to think.
00:07:57.600 --> 00:08:02.399
There's so many pieces I want to like talk about with you because it's like what the chicken before the egg, right?
00:08:02.480 --> 00:08:04.720
It's because you talk about IBS, right?
00:08:04.800 --> 00:08:09.360
So is IBS the beginning or like the gut issues the beginning of why?
00:08:09.439 --> 00:08:18.000
Like I feel like you're on TikTok and you see so many people with low ferritin, low vitamin D, like all these women, like why is that happening?
00:08:18.079 --> 00:08:25.199
And you even see it's people who are not having heavy menstrual cycles and they eat a balanced diet.
00:08:25.360 --> 00:08:28.160
And like, why are we not absorbing things?
00:08:28.319 --> 00:08:31.680
Is that the beginning of why the autoimmunity happens?
00:08:31.759 --> 00:08:34.559
Or like, what is the track you see?
00:08:36.480 --> 00:08:43.759
So interestingly, when I used to work as a pharmacy technician, I would see women coming in for birth control pills.
00:08:44.000 --> 00:08:50.879
Then later they'd start having digestive issues, they'd get on proton pump inhibitors, and eventually thyroid hormones.
00:08:51.200 --> 00:08:55.519
And I would be like, huh, I wonder what's what's the pathway there, right?
00:08:55.759 --> 00:09:14.639
And so we do know from research that three things need to be present in order for an autoimmune condition like Hashimoto's, the most common cause of an underactive thyroid to occur, genetic predisposition, some kind of a trigger, as well as intestinal permeability.
00:09:14.799 --> 00:09:17.919
So intestinal permeability, also known as leaky gut.
00:09:18.080 --> 00:09:25.440
This basically means your gut is out of balance and it is not going to properly manage your immune system.
00:09:25.600 --> 00:09:30.559
Many of our immune cells actually are very much deeply intertwined with the function of our gut.
00:09:30.720 --> 00:09:38.559
And so when our gut's out of balance, our immune system is not going to be working properly, and then we're going to be at greater risk for autoimmune conditions.
00:09:38.799 --> 00:09:51.600
The other contributing factors that I mentioned, birth control, certain birth control pills can lead to intestinal permeability, as can infections, as can the widespread use of NSAIDs, as can stress.
00:09:52.240 --> 00:10:02.960
Looking further, um, I would see women, whenever they're under a lot of stress and they have these gut issues, they're going to end up with nutrient deficiencies.
00:10:03.200 --> 00:10:15.120
So they might be deficient in B12, they might be deficient in ferritin, they might become deficient in thiamine, which is another really important nutrient for thyroid function.
00:10:15.360 --> 00:10:16.960
You mentioned vitamin D.
00:10:17.279 --> 00:10:29.519
This is an incredibly important vitamin for gut health, for for mood, for autoimmunity, for immune health, and widespread, we are deficient in vitamin D.
00:10:29.679 --> 00:10:50.399
So I will say, in my experience, it's the nutrient deficiencies, the exposure to toxins that we don't clear out properly, our chronic stress response, as well as potentially infections that we're exposed to that create low-grade inflammation in our bodies, and of course, our modern diet.
00:10:50.639 --> 00:11:02.320
These are going to be the contributing factors to why so many women are walking around with nutrient deficiencies, gut issues, as well as autoimmune thyroid issues.
00:11:02.559 --> 00:11:03.679
And anxiety, of course.
00:11:04.399 --> 00:11:16.240
Yeah, no, that I mean that makes the most sense because when I think about it now, you almost think, okay, around your 20s or so, you see people get on birth control, maybe like upper teens.
00:11:16.639 --> 00:11:19.519
And then suddenly people are like out of nowhere.
00:11:19.679 --> 00:11:22.960
They struggle with anxiety or they have gut issues.
00:11:23.039 --> 00:11:25.120
And I've actually never thought about that.
00:11:25.279 --> 00:11:32.159
But it was funny enough, it was when I was on birth control that I did suddenly get all these symptoms.
00:11:32.240 --> 00:11:34.559
And they were like, Oh, you're having anxiety.
00:11:34.639 --> 00:11:42.960
And like, yeah, you might be also having anxiety, but I don't believe people just suddenly feel for all these physical symptoms and it's nothing.
00:11:43.039 --> 00:11:46.240
Like, I just I've had I've always had a hard time accepting that.
00:11:46.320 --> 00:11:50.000
And I love that we're in this generation of really advocating for ourselves.
00:11:50.080 --> 00:11:54.000
And I love what you do because you weren't willing to accept what they were telling you.
00:11:54.159 --> 00:11:57.519
Like you weren't willing to be like, oh yeah, I just have gut issues.
00:11:57.600 --> 00:12:00.960
You just take a PPI, or you know, like what are we doing?
00:12:01.039 --> 00:12:05.840
Because I've been through the same thing where you go to the doctor, you have a symptom, they go, here's a PPI for that.
00:12:06.000 --> 00:12:08.960
You go to another doctor, you have a symptom, here's a medication for that.
00:12:09.039 --> 00:12:13.600
And you're like, at this point, I'm gonna be on 15 medications, but what is going on?
00:12:13.759 --> 00:12:16.080
Like, why is this happening?
00:12:16.240 --> 00:12:22.320
And so that is actually what brought me to the first book you wrote, which was the root cause, Hashimoto's root cause.
00:12:22.399 --> 00:12:26.399
And so for anybody who hasn't checked out, that's like the her core five.
00:12:26.480 --> 00:12:28.000
I feel like that's the first one.
00:12:28.320 --> 00:12:33.200
And uh you kind of aren't willing to just accept that like Hashimoto's happens.
00:12:33.440 --> 00:12:35.360
You really wanted to look into root causes.
00:12:35.440 --> 00:12:42.480
So if without someone who hasn't re read the book, what would you say like the top root causes you see, like maybe like top three?
00:12:44.960 --> 00:12:47.200
Nutrient deficiencies are gonna be big.
00:12:47.360 --> 00:12:58.559
So selenium, vitamin D, thiamine, B12, magnesium are some of the big ones that I focus on, as well as, of course, ferritin levels.
00:12:58.720 --> 00:13:15.600
My theory is I haven't seen a lot of research to back this up, but sometimes low ferritin can actually trigger thyroid disease because iron is weird for shunting and for for us to be able to use our thyroid hormones in the cells better, right?
00:13:16.000 --> 00:13:20.000
The other things that I typically see are gonna be food sensitivities.
00:13:20.159 --> 00:13:31.759
Gluten, dairy, and soy are the top three in my experience, where women will be like, okay, I am gonna get off of these, and all of a sudden, I feel tremendously better.
00:13:32.000 --> 00:13:42.480
Sometimes they might see an improvement in their food sensitivities, or sometimes they might see an improvement in their thyroid antibodies, sometimes they just might feel human again, right?
00:13:42.559 --> 00:13:45.360
Just getting off of these foods that are gonna be triggering.
00:13:45.600 --> 00:13:52.720
And then I think I'll give you one that's not super appreciated, and that's going to be chronic low-grade infections.
00:13:52.960 --> 00:14:00.960
So we talked about women with low ferritin levels, maybe they don't have heavy menses, but what they could have could be H.
00:14:01.200 --> 00:14:06.159
pylori infection that's gonna make you iron deficient and ferritin deficient.
00:14:06.480 --> 00:14:21.600
And this has been found to be cross-reactive to thyroid antibodies, which means when you have this infection, your immune system is gonna attack the infection and anything that looks like the infection, hence thyroid tissue.
00:14:21.840 --> 00:14:25.279
And SIBO is another type of overgrowth.
00:14:25.440 --> 00:14:30.559
I wouldn't call it an infection per se, but about 50% of women with hypothyroidism tend to have that.
00:14:30.799 --> 00:14:36.639
And then last but not least is blastocystis huminus, and this is a protozoal infection.
00:14:36.799 --> 00:14:41.840
I found that in about um anywhere upwards to 30% of people with Hashimoto's.
00:14:41.919 --> 00:14:46.080
It's also very common in IBS and also chronic hives.
00:14:46.320 --> 00:14:54.480
And the cool thing is when you eradicate this protozoa, you'll see IBS going away, chronic hives going away.
00:14:54.559 --> 00:14:57.279
Oftentimes thyroid antibodies greatly reduce.
00:14:57.519 --> 00:14:59.600
Um, sometimes TSH normalizes.
00:14:59.759 --> 00:15:01.600
Definitely symptoms improve.
00:15:02.480 --> 00:15:03.120
Wow.
00:15:03.360 --> 00:15:05.679
Um that's amazing.
00:15:05.840 --> 00:15:08.799
First of all, that we have all those things that we can look into.
00:15:08.960 --> 00:15:12.639
I think a lot of people, they're like, okay, that sounds cool, but like where do I begin?
00:15:12.799 --> 00:15:14.720
Where would you recommend somebody?
00:15:14.879 --> 00:15:16.960
Because you don't see clients anymore, do you?
00:15:17.519 --> 00:15:21.440
I have people that can join my um coaching programs.
00:15:21.519 --> 00:15:27.279
So those happen, there's one coming up pretty soon, and then I'll start signing clients in January.
00:15:27.440 --> 00:15:29.440
I just had a beautiful baby girl.
00:15:30.080 --> 00:15:31.039
Oh, congrats.
00:15:31.200 --> 00:15:33.840
I know I've I've I I follow you on so many podcasts.
00:15:33.919 --> 00:15:35.200
I've I've seen all of that.
00:15:35.360 --> 00:15:37.919
I actually, you were just talking about the Blasto, whatever.
00:15:38.000 --> 00:15:43.440
I think I just saw you talk about that one on uh Kayla Barnes podcast, and I was like, oh, that's a new one.
00:15:43.519 --> 00:15:44.240
I haven't heard that.
00:15:44.399 --> 00:15:45.759
So I was really listening to that.
00:15:45.840 --> 00:15:47.600
But okay, your your coaching thing.
00:15:47.679 --> 00:15:52.799
So if somebody goes to that, do you do the gut testing that sees these infections in that?
00:15:53.600 --> 00:15:54.879
One of the programs we do.
00:15:55.039 --> 00:15:57.039
So we had the gut recovery program.
00:15:57.360 --> 00:16:08.879
Um, but of course, I always want to empower people to take charge of their own health because there are things people can do on their own to feel better or work with within their communities too.
00:16:09.200 --> 00:16:18.399
So part of my programs, I a lot of it is teaching people how to take charge of their own health, where we would start with blood sugar balance.
00:16:18.960 --> 00:16:29.120
Generally speaking, we're gonna want to eat um more protein, less carbs, potentially more fat than the standard American diet.
00:16:29.200 --> 00:16:34.000
I know protein is having her moment these days, and I'm very, very pleased to see that.
00:16:34.240 --> 00:16:47.039
Um looking at rigoring out your reactive foods, gluten and dairy being the most common ones, soy as well, getting off of these foods for a time period to see if your symptoms, potentially antibodies improve.
00:16:47.279 --> 00:16:50.559
I usually give it about three months to make sure that you retest.
00:16:50.879 --> 00:16:53.440
These are things, again, you can do on your own.
00:16:53.679 --> 00:17:02.159
Looking at nutrient deficiencies, I like to test for B12, vitamin D and ferritin to see if those might be optimized.
00:17:02.320 --> 00:17:05.519
Again, you can do this with your primary care doctor, right?
00:17:05.680 --> 00:17:09.839
And then you would get on the supplements to address those levels.
00:17:10.079 --> 00:17:14.880
I tend to like them higher than most people would think about.
00:17:15.039 --> 00:17:23.119
For example, if you go and get your vitamin D levels tested at your primary care doctor, your levels might be 31 and they'll say, you're fine, right?
00:17:23.200 --> 00:17:35.279
But when I like to see vitamin D between 60 and 80 for optimal immune system and thyroid function, with ferritin, I like to see that number between 90 and 110 for optimal thyroid function as well.
00:17:35.599 --> 00:17:44.319
And it's interesting because women will say, Oh, my ferritin was 11 or 15, and my doctor said that was normal.
00:17:44.559 --> 00:17:54.720
For me, when my ferritin level got that low, it was during one of my pregnancies, I became anxious and I had insomnia and I had like restless leg syndrome.
00:17:54.960 --> 00:18:02.559
And you hear so many more innovative psychiatrists are talking about is the depression anxiety or is it low ferritin, right?
00:18:02.799 --> 00:18:10.000
So a lot of us are walking through life with all of these symptoms, not knowing that it could be sometimes just one nutrient, right?
00:18:10.480 --> 00:18:15.039
With um B12, I like to see the levels above 700.
00:18:15.839 --> 00:18:24.720
So B12 is an interesting one because when you get it tested, sometimes it can be actually really high, which is actually a deficiency, right?
00:18:25.759 --> 00:18:40.000
It's kind of a tricky test because in some cases you can essentially have um, if you're taking like a methylfolate supplement, for example, that can hide your B12 deficiency.
00:18:40.160 --> 00:18:42.000
Sometimes it might be elevated.
00:18:42.240 --> 00:18:50.160
What I also like to do is test for um parietal cell antibodies because that means you might not be absorbing oral B12.
00:18:50.400 --> 00:18:53.599
Um, Brian Johnson, I believe, has this condition.
00:18:53.759 --> 00:18:57.440
And the interesting thing is in many cases, the cause is H.
00:18:57.519 --> 00:18:59.839
pylori, and the solution is to treat H.
00:18:59.920 --> 00:19:07.599
pylori, and then your B12 levels will normalize, and oftentimes your autoimmune markers will start um gradually improving.
00:19:07.680 --> 00:19:16.000
It might take two to three years before you see a normalization of that, but your ferritin B12 might actually be impacted in autoimmunity by an H.
00:19:16.079 --> 00:19:17.599
pylori infection.
00:19:18.240 --> 00:19:21.039
It it is actually really sad, kind of what you said.
00:19:21.359 --> 00:19:24.480
I had to look at my old blood work.
00:19:24.640 --> 00:19:36.319
So when I first started developing really bad, just anxiety out of nowhere, literally out of nowhere, was such a normal, like not nor I hate the word normal, but like just didn't have what I was experiencing.
00:19:36.559 --> 00:19:39.519
Looking back at my blood work, my ferritin was an 11.
00:19:39.599 --> 00:19:41.119
They said it was in range.
00:19:41.279 --> 00:19:48.000
Uh, my vitamin B12 was low, my vitamin D was, I think, 29, but I think it was still in range.
00:19:48.160 --> 00:19:51.519
And I was just like, nobody said anything to me back then.
00:19:51.599 --> 00:20:02.480
And so I just feel kind of like how you feel, kind of what you do, just all these people out there who have these same results, and they're just told, oh, yeah, we we didn't, I mean, there's nothing wrong.
00:20:02.640 --> 00:20:03.680
Nothing, everything's fine.
00:20:03.839 --> 00:20:05.839
And it's just like, no, everything's not fine.
00:20:05.920 --> 00:20:09.359
And if you have thyroid antibodies, everything's not fine.
00:20:09.440 --> 00:20:13.599
So I'm sick of us being told, like, it's just in your brain, just go home.
00:20:13.680 --> 00:20:15.039
Like, there's nothing we can do for you.
00:20:15.200 --> 00:20:18.400
And so what the work you do is just so important.
00:20:18.720 --> 00:20:22.160
And I got off track because I was gonna ask you, B12.
00:20:22.319 --> 00:20:25.519
Um, how do you feel about MMA versus B12?
00:20:26.799 --> 00:20:28.160
I do like doing that test.
00:20:28.240 --> 00:20:34.559
And I sometimes will also do an organic acid test to figure out um what's going on with all the other B vitamins.
00:20:34.799 --> 00:20:50.880
Um again, I'm I'm kind of of the of the um, I guess, persuasion where I like to utilize sublingual B12 and I would like to use adeno and hydroxicobalamin for people.
00:20:51.039 --> 00:20:57.680
If there's any kind of suspicion or symptom like neurological symptoms that people have or tingling, you might as well try it.
00:20:58.000 --> 00:21:00.720
And um utilizing a little bit of B12.
00:21:00.799 --> 00:21:10.000
Because sometimes, again, like you said, the elevations might not be accurate if you just get your B12 levels tested on a standard blood panel.
00:21:10.319 --> 00:21:13.279
You you might actually be deficient.
00:21:13.839 --> 00:21:14.400
Yeah.
00:21:14.720 --> 00:21:20.559
Um I also feel like this is kind of I I'm I'm curious your opinion on it.
00:21:20.640 --> 00:21:26.799
If if it's uh, you know, with like function health and these more comprehensive blood tests that you can get done on your own.
00:21:27.039 --> 00:21:31.200
I'm seeing loads and loads of people being like, I have a positive A.
00:21:31.680 --> 00:21:36.559
I have the and and so I think that there's this rush right now of people being like, what do I do?
00:21:36.720 --> 00:21:39.119
And so that's why I think this conversation is so important.
00:21:39.519 --> 00:21:43.119
And I'm kind of a little more curious actually on this program you're releasing.
00:21:43.279 --> 00:21:49.279
Is it like, are you accepting a lot of people or is it like a small group, like anybody who's interested?
00:21:49.519 --> 00:21:51.119
Like, say they got function health done.
00:21:51.200 --> 00:21:55.440
They got told like they all it is the issue with function health is you're not talking to a doctor.
00:21:55.599 --> 00:22:08.480
And so I think that that is good and bad because function health is r Running a lot of tests that you don't normally get at the doctor's, but having all that information, it's that standpoint of kind of like what I said, where do you go?
00:22:08.640 --> 00:22:09.839
Like, what's the next step?
00:22:10.000 --> 00:22:11.279
I think that's the hardest part.
00:22:11.359 --> 00:22:14.000
And so I'm curious about this program you have.
00:22:14.559 --> 00:22:23.200
So I really appreciate what function health is doing because I feel like our health data should be at our disposal and our hands.
00:22:23.279 --> 00:22:25.599
I don't think it should be behind lockdown.
00:22:25.920 --> 00:22:33.519
Um, there are clients I've had where doctors would not let them, would not order labs on their behalf.
00:22:33.599 --> 00:22:37.839
And that's devastating because sometimes these labs can really, really help us out.
00:22:38.000 --> 00:22:46.000
Now, this is where it gets kind of tricky because we might get these lab results, and unless we're trained in them, then it's like, what do we do about it?
00:22:46.079 --> 00:22:47.359
We can use chat GPT, of course.
00:22:47.599 --> 00:22:48.640
We go on TikTok.
00:22:48.880 --> 00:22:55.119
Yeah, yeah, we could use TikTok, Chat GPT, and I mean, uh what it what do they say?
00:22:55.279 --> 00:22:58.799
A uh a broken clock is right correct twice a day.
00:22:58.960 --> 00:23:03.119
Like there, you might get great information from TikTok and Chat GPT, or you might not, right?
00:23:03.279 --> 00:23:07.839
You might be told that the mushroom is is not poisonous, then go ahead and eat it.
00:23:08.000 --> 00:23:12.079
And then and then ChatGPT might say, wait a minute, this was poisonous.
00:23:12.160 --> 00:23:12.799
You were right.
00:23:12.960 --> 00:23:17.200
So I really am an advocate for one, educating yourself.
00:23:17.440 --> 00:23:23.519
So going to get books and resources that talk about how to read your own labs.
00:23:23.680 --> 00:23:26.079
This is going to be very, very helpful for anybody.
00:23:26.240 --> 00:23:29.440
If you have Hashimoto's, read a book about Hashimoto's.
00:23:29.599 --> 00:23:30.559
It doesn't have to be my book.
00:23:30.640 --> 00:23:32.160
It could be somebody else's book, right?
00:23:32.480 --> 00:23:34.160
Read a book about IBS if you have that.
00:23:34.319 --> 00:23:41.440
If you have anxiety, read a book about anxiety, uh functional medicine approach to that, for example, to see where you stand.
00:23:41.599 --> 00:23:48.240
And also work with a healthcare professional that might be more functionally minded.
00:23:48.400 --> 00:23:52.160
So not somebody that's just looks at what's out of range.
00:23:52.240 --> 00:23:54.640
And do you have cancer or do you not have cancer?
00:23:54.880 --> 00:23:58.319
Do you have um kidney failure or do you not have kidney failure?
00:23:58.480 --> 00:24:03.920
Look at somebody that looks at your labs on how to make you feel optimized and optimal.
00:24:04.160 --> 00:24:08.880
So yes, maybe ferritin about like out of 10.
00:24:09.119 --> 00:24:12.559
Is that like life-threatening?
00:24:12.799 --> 00:24:14.960
Maybe not, but are you gonna feel like crap?
00:24:15.119 --> 00:24:15.599
Probably.
00:24:15.839 --> 00:24:20.000
But in getting your levels up, that can really resolve a lot of your health-related symptoms.
00:24:20.160 --> 00:24:22.640
So I would encourage people to do both.
00:24:22.880 --> 00:24:31.759
I don't encourage people to rely blindly on any practitioner, even the best practitioner, because people can make mistakes and they can overlook things.
00:24:31.839 --> 00:24:34.319
They might have a bad day and they might miss a lab.
00:24:34.480 --> 00:24:39.519
So really being an empowered patient is how you're gonna get the best results.
00:24:39.839 --> 00:24:54.480
I have um programs, I have my Hashimoto self-management program where people can um have access to getting their own lab tests, and then they have part of the program teaches them how to interpret their own lab tests.
00:24:54.720 --> 00:25:02.240
And once a year I release it where we where people can ask me questions or they can get a consultation with me as well.
00:25:02.480 --> 00:25:04.559
So that's one of the programs that I have.
00:25:04.720 --> 00:25:18.079
And then I have the gut recovery program, which is more focused on gut health, and then cause reset and the adrenal program where we really focus on how do we solve very specific symptoms in a short amount of time.
00:25:18.319 --> 00:25:34.480
I will say, doing this for over 13 years now, there are patterns that when I see somebody with a symptom, I'm there's gonna be like top five things that I'll recommend that 80% of people will benefit from.
00:25:34.720 --> 00:25:39.839
When I was first starting off in functional medicine, I was like, everybody should get 500 lab tests done.
00:25:40.079 --> 00:25:43.359
That way we can piece it all together and figure it out.
00:25:43.519 --> 00:25:46.400
But that got to be very time-consuming and expensive.
00:25:46.720 --> 00:25:53.440
Whereas at this point, I'm like, okay, well, if you have Hashimoto's, there's a good chance you're not detoxing properly.
00:25:53.599 --> 00:25:58.799
There's a good chance you have an impaired stress response, and there's probably something that's off about your gut.
00:25:58.960 --> 00:26:04.319
So we're gonna focus on those three places to get you feeling better, right?
00:26:04.480 --> 00:26:09.279
With and then we can do more fun, exciting, nerdy labs too.
00:26:10.079 --> 00:26:10.640
Yeah.
00:26:11.039 --> 00:26:12.640
Oh my gosh, I love all that.
00:26:12.720 --> 00:26:16.240
I was just sitting here thinking about um a couple months ago.
00:26:16.480 --> 00:26:17.920
You're gonna die laughing.
00:26:18.160 --> 00:26:21.119
Your videos, you did like the Thyroid documentary.
00:26:21.359 --> 00:26:22.799
How long ago was that?
00:26:23.279 --> 00:26:25.680
It was, I want to say 2017.
00:26:25.839 --> 00:26:26.079
Yeah.
00:26:26.240 --> 00:26:26.480
Yeah.
00:26:26.640 --> 00:26:29.440
I'm like watching, I'm like, this is before 4K.
00:26:29.519 --> 00:26:31.599
This is like this is this is older.
00:26:31.680 --> 00:26:33.920
But I I learned so much from that.
00:26:34.000 --> 00:26:41.920
And just your website is such a wealth of knowledge that I'm sitting here like, I need to get into these programs because I think this is another thing.
00:26:42.160 --> 00:26:49.519
I think you specialize in something that I think is growing in people wanting to gain more knowledge about it, but it's not fully there yet.
00:26:49.599 --> 00:26:52.640
It's kind of like because it to me, it's because it's women's health, right?
00:26:52.880 --> 00:26:58.880
Like we're in this limbo of like we we need to do something about it, but it's just such a slow process and the funding to it.
00:26:59.039 --> 00:27:06.880
So even I live in Dallas, Texas, and finding somebody here who is just an expert in the thyroid, it's really hard.
00:27:07.279 --> 00:27:09.279
And and I'm a registered dietitian.
00:27:09.359 --> 00:27:14.000
I know a lot more than like the average person on just all of this, and I still find it hard.
00:27:14.079 --> 00:27:18.799
And so I think it's just it can be so incredibly frustrating.
00:27:19.039 --> 00:27:22.400
And that's why this once again is so important.
00:27:22.640 --> 00:27:26.559
But back to your books, we started with the Hashimoto's thyroiditis.
00:27:26.640 --> 00:27:28.400
So that's the finding the root cause.
00:27:28.640 --> 00:27:32.960
And then I think I got your nutri, I got the recipe book, which I love that one.
00:27:33.039 --> 00:27:34.880
I I cook things from that all the time.
00:27:35.039 --> 00:27:37.039
And there and nutrition protocols are in that.
00:27:37.119 --> 00:27:40.559
But before that, I haven't gotten the there's the 90-day plan.
00:27:40.640 --> 00:27:43.039
Is that a good one for somebody to start with?
00:27:43.200 --> 00:27:49.440
Like, say they did the function lab test, they got these test results, doctors tell them, hey, you're fine, just go home.
00:27:50.079 --> 00:27:55.039
I would say Hashimoto's protocol is probably the best place to start for most people.
00:27:55.200 --> 00:27:58.960
It was my most popular book that I've ever written.
00:27:59.200 --> 00:28:09.359
After I wrote the root cause book, some of my clients and readers were like, Can you just give us a protocol that tells us what to do, like a step-by-step approach?
00:28:09.680 --> 00:28:12.000
So I was like, okay, I'll do it.
00:28:12.240 --> 00:28:24.400
And the 90-day plan is essentially we focus on your liver health for two weeks, we focus on the health of your stress response adrenals for four weeks, and then we focus on your gut health for six weeks.
00:28:24.640 --> 00:28:29.119
And it's very much you don't take 800 supplements at once.
00:28:29.200 --> 00:28:32.720
You're not eliminating 800 different foods, you're not running 800 different tests.
00:28:32.799 --> 00:28:43.359
It's very simple and formulaic so that you just do a handful of habits for those time periods, and then you kind of can drop off.
00:28:43.440 --> 00:28:46.559
So you don't have to keep taking all the supplements throughout the process.
00:28:46.720 --> 00:28:48.880
You don't have to keep doing those same habits.
00:28:49.039 --> 00:29:05.359
For example, in the uh liver protocol, we have you go makeup free for two weeks because we're constantly bombarded with personal care toxins from our personal care, from our water that we're drinking, from candles in our homes.
00:29:05.519 --> 00:29:09.279
So we're really focusing on lowering our toxic burden.
00:29:09.519 --> 00:29:11.920
One way is less input.
00:29:12.079 --> 00:29:17.039
And we're also focusing on getting you to sweat four times a week at least, right?
00:29:17.200 --> 00:29:28.160
So whether that's hot yoga, my favorite is infrared sauna, or um if you're in Dallas and or Austin, you could sit in a hot car outside for two minutes or just walk to your mailbox, right?
00:29:28.559 --> 00:29:28.880
Yep.
00:29:29.359 --> 00:29:34.640
The goal is to get you sweating because sweat helps us eliminate a lot of our toxins.
00:29:34.799 --> 00:29:40.240
And then you take targeted supplements that support your liver's detox capabilities.
00:29:40.400 --> 00:29:45.599
N-acetylcysteine is probably one of the best ones.
00:29:45.759 --> 00:29:52.319
Whenever I studied functional medicine, it was like, here's 800 different toxins that you can be exposed to.
00:29:52.559 --> 00:29:58.079
And 98% of them was like sauna and N-acetylcysteine will get them out of your system.
00:29:58.319 --> 00:30:02.000
So really focusing on those things that move the needle.
00:30:03.200 --> 00:30:04.079
Yeah, yeah.
00:30:04.480 --> 00:30:10.319
I I need this heat wave to pass, but it definitely is getting the sweat going and out of the body.
00:30:10.480 --> 00:30:22.000
So, okay, your last two books I want to talk on because I think like your plan, it's funny how you, when you look at your five books, your five books, it's it literally hits everything that I feel like somebody goes through when they're struggling with autoimmune.
00:30:22.160 --> 00:30:24.960
So adrenal transformation protocol.
00:30:25.680 --> 00:30:30.559
We're a stress society, and my community definitely understands that.
00:30:30.799 --> 00:30:35.039
So uh take us into like what made you write this book.
00:30:35.759 --> 00:30:36.079
Okay.
00:30:36.880 --> 00:30:42.400
So my previous books focused on the adrenals and the stress response.
00:30:42.720 --> 00:30:45.200
I also did not have children at that time.
00:30:45.359 --> 00:30:51.680
So I was like, you can meditate for six hours a day and make sure you sleep for 14 hours a day.
00:30:51.920 --> 00:31:02.319
If somebody bothers you, cut the, you know, like say goodbye and decommit from your whole life and go on a fancy vacation and do yoga and take hormones.
00:31:02.480 --> 00:31:10.319
So my plan was very much, it worked, don't get me wrong, but some of my, and I would be like, quick coffee, right?
00:31:10.480 --> 00:31:12.000
Just stop drinking caffeine.
00:31:12.160 --> 00:31:17.279
And some of my clients would be like, okay, yeah, like over my dead body.
00:31:17.359 --> 00:31:18.480
And I didn't really get it.
00:31:18.720 --> 00:31:23.920
I was like, well, if you have children and you can't meal prep in the morning, why don't you just meal prep at night?
00:31:24.000 --> 00:31:26.319
And they were like, well, they're here at night too, right?
00:31:26.559 --> 00:31:38.880
So um I then had my beautiful son, and I found myself in, I tested my adrenals with a Dutch test, and my adrenals, my cortisol was like flatlined.
00:31:39.119 --> 00:31:56.559
High cortisol is trending as an issue, but let me tell you, ladies, with autoimmune anxiety, thyroid issues, chronic fatigue syndrome, if low cortisol is probably your problem because we need just the right amount of cortisol to get us moving and to low manage our inflammation.
00:31:56.799 --> 00:32:02.559
So I was feeling pretty badly postpartum, and I was waking up every few hours with my son.
00:32:02.880 --> 00:32:09.920
I was drinking coffee for the first time in my life, and I'm like, wow, I can't really do any of the things that I used to tell people to do.
00:32:10.000 --> 00:32:13.519
Like, I, you know, kind of fell off of my high and mighty horse at that point.
00:32:13.680 --> 00:32:22.240
And I had to come up with a new plan that really focused on lifestyle interventions for supporting the body's stress response.
00:32:22.480 --> 00:32:34.640
And a lot of it was were strategies that I had to use personally as like a new breastfeeding mom that was waking up all night and could not let go of my commitments.
00:32:35.039 --> 00:32:38.319
But they worked beautifully for a lot of the women in my community.
00:32:38.559 --> 00:32:46.240
And after some time, I decided to write the adrenal transformation protocol book based on my adrenal transformation program.
00:32:46.559 --> 00:32:55.599
One of the the secrets, not so big secrets, is we focus on the right light input so you get bright light input.
00:32:57.440 --> 00:32:58.960
Lo and behold, that wakes you up.
00:32:59.119 --> 00:33:00.640
Holy cow, who would have thought, right?
00:33:00.720 --> 00:33:03.119
That the sun helps us manage our energy.
00:33:03.599 --> 00:33:08.640
You focus on being mostly in the dark at nighttime so that you sleep better.
00:33:08.880 --> 00:33:17.680
We focus on blood sugar balance, and we focus on the health of your mitochondria, in addition to some of the traditional adrenal adaptogens.
00:33:18.160 --> 00:33:34.240
And that has restored people's energy levels and their I mean, brain fog, fatigue, anxiety levels faster than I can get lab results from a Dutch test or from an adrenal saliva test.
00:33:34.640 --> 00:33:43.599
So I was like, okay, I'm I had been running all these labs for people, and sometimes people would just have the labs sitting at their homes.
00:33:43.839 --> 00:33:48.880
I know one client, I think it was like nine years later, they were like, Oh yeah, I finally did my lab, right?
00:33:49.359 --> 00:33:54.559
Um, because it's a pain to get these labs done, and then you have to wait three weeks to get the results.
00:33:54.799 --> 00:33:58.480
But this method is very straightforward.
00:33:58.640 --> 00:34:03.519
It's a handful of different supplements like adaptogens, B vitamins, vitamin C.
00:34:03.759 --> 00:34:08.880
I also like to use carnitine, electrolytes, and deribose to support the mitochondria.
00:34:09.360 --> 00:34:15.360
Um, and it just really helps people feel so much better within a really short amount of time.
00:34:15.599 --> 00:34:24.079
Um, my favorite strategy that I think everybody could incorporate in their lives is doing more things that you enjoy and pleasurable activities.
00:34:24.239 --> 00:34:29.280
Holy cow, that actually moves the needle for fatigue, motivation, and brain fog.
00:34:30.239 --> 00:34:32.880
Yeah, because we we get stuck in this hamster wheel.
00:34:33.119 --> 00:34:43.119
And I think also when you are dealing with autoimmunity or gut issues, it's hard to not like it's so easy for someone to say, just calm down, just don't stress about it.
00:34:43.199 --> 00:34:48.719
It's it's dang near impossible when you feel so crappy each day.
00:34:48.880 --> 00:34:54.639
When you wake up and you, it's all you can think about because it's all you feel to not stress about it.
00:34:54.719 --> 00:35:09.840
And so I think that that blend of we gotta remember the foundations, which is the adrenals and the stress, because if all that's messed up, it's still gonna keep no matter what diet we follow and no matter what we do, if we don't have that intact, it's like these layers, right?
00:35:09.920 --> 00:35:17.519
Like if our gut's not intact, our adrenals aren't intact, our thyroid's never gonna function no matter what medication we take, no matter what diet we're on.
00:35:17.760 --> 00:35:20.159
So the final layer is the gut.
00:35:20.239 --> 00:35:21.440
So the IBS book.
00:35:21.599 --> 00:35:23.760
What made you finally write a book on IBS?
00:35:23.840 --> 00:35:28.079
Because you actually had IBS before you knew about your thyroid issue, right?
00:35:28.719 --> 00:35:29.199
I did.
00:35:29.280 --> 00:35:44.639
When I was in pharmacy school, I was lucky enough to be diagnosed with IBS after some um unglamorous situations where I had to run into the bathroom with um explosive diarrhea.
00:35:44.800 --> 00:35:48.400
I know so, so gr glamorous, love talking about this.
00:35:48.639 --> 00:35:55.679
Um, and I ended up having to miss an exam because I had been up all night with explosive diarrhea.
00:35:55.840 --> 00:36:01.199
And my professors were like, yeah, you so you had diarrhea, like, prove it.
00:36:01.280 --> 00:36:03.280
And so I had to get a doctor's note.
00:36:03.679 --> 00:36:06.559
Um, and the doctor said, Well, you're just stressed.
00:36:06.800 --> 00:36:13.920
If you went to go live on a beach somewhere and quit grad school, I'm sure this would go away, but you're probably not gonna do that, are you?
00:36:14.159 --> 00:36:18.000
And I was like, Yeah, probably not, but it sounds like a great idea, right?
00:36:18.159 --> 00:36:24.800
Um, I got a prescription medication which gave me blurry vision and kind of made me a little slower.
00:36:24.880 --> 00:36:26.719
So I was like, this is not gonna work.
00:36:26.880 --> 00:36:29.840
I have to take exams like every twice a week.
00:36:29.920 --> 00:36:37.440
I have to take these exams and pharmacology and all kinds of complicated things that I'm, you know, like really having to study for.
00:36:37.679 --> 00:36:39.920
So I just kind of learned to live with it.
00:36:40.159 --> 00:36:47.440
What I didn't know at the time is that this annoying thing that I had could one day turn into autoimmune disease, right?
00:36:47.599 --> 00:36:49.119
And so it started with IBS.
00:36:49.199 --> 00:36:55.280
And then the next year I started having anxiety and panic attacks, and I was like always a very laid-back person.
00:36:55.440 --> 00:36:56.880
I was like, where did that come from?
00:36:57.039 --> 00:36:57.760
Why am I having pen?
00:36:58.320 --> 00:37:04.000
And didn't it didn't it start with IBS and then you suddenly started having like the heartburn and the indigestion?
00:37:04.239 --> 00:37:04.559
Yeah.
00:37:04.639 --> 00:37:17.280
So it was IBS, then panic attacks, then it was acid reflux, then it was like carpal tunnel, and um hair loss, I think being a Leo finally like got me to be like, no, what is happening here?
00:37:17.440 --> 00:37:20.800
This this hair, this hair of mine, I can't be losing it, right?
00:37:20.960 --> 00:37:27.920
Because I had been living with fatigue and all these symptoms, allergies, and I kept going to different doctors, and they said, You're just getting older.
00:37:28.079 --> 00:37:36.320
And I was like 25, of course, and you're stressed, and you know, everybody's gaining weight, and uh, I was just like the hair loss.
00:37:36.400 --> 00:37:38.480
Like, why am I in my 20s losing my hair?
00:37:38.559 --> 00:37:39.519
That's that just can't be right.
00:37:39.840 --> 00:37:46.639
Like, oh, it's just stress, it's your anxiety, you're a woman, you gotta calm down, and you're just like, I know how I feel.
00:37:46.800 --> 00:37:48.880
I know the before me and the after me.
00:37:48.960 --> 00:37:54.639
And I've always kind of been somebody who has like stress or perfectionism, and I get that.
00:37:54.719 --> 00:37:58.159
Like, you're able to see what you know with stress.
00:37:58.320 --> 00:37:59.840
Like, you know when you feel stressed.
00:38:00.000 --> 00:38:14.480
So when you're experiencing these things and there is no correlation, even when you like take time off of things, I think that is where people get so frustrated by a doctor just continually saying stress, and you're like, I know the difference between stress and this, and I want an answer.
00:38:14.800 --> 00:38:18.239
It's like I went to grad school, I've gone through so many breakups.
00:38:18.400 --> 00:38:19.679
This is not a stressful time.
00:38:23.119 --> 00:38:24.960
I've had finals in college.
00:38:25.039 --> 00:38:27.360
Like I've done, I've experienced stress.
00:38:27.519 --> 00:38:29.519
This this isn't even a stressful period of my life.
00:38:29.599 --> 00:38:32.000
Like some people will say that too when it all happens.
00:38:32.079 --> 00:38:35.760
It's like nothing's even going on that is quote unquote so stressful.
00:38:35.840 --> 00:38:36.880
So, like, why?
00:38:37.039 --> 00:38:52.320
And yeah, so the interesting thing that happens, and like I said, I didn't know this at the time, but IBS or a gut barrier disruption, which may be diagnosed as IBS, or it might be completely asymptomatic, or you might have the symptoms and you might not get the diagnosis.
00:38:52.480 --> 00:38:57.920
This precedes autoimmunity by five to 10 years, sometimes 15 years, according to functional medicine.
00:38:58.079 --> 00:39:03.280
And so when I studied functional medicine, I was like, my word, this is totally what happened to me.
00:39:03.360 --> 00:39:05.760
Like I could just see this clear trajectory.
00:39:06.079 --> 00:39:10.320
And with my clients, I would be going through their intakes.
00:39:10.559 --> 00:39:16.559
And sometimes 50, 60 year old men and women, my health was wonderful.
00:39:16.800 --> 00:39:20.079
And then I was going through a period of intense stress.
00:39:20.400 --> 00:39:23.440
And then I had food poisoning.
00:39:24.000 --> 00:39:32.880
And after that, you know, they'd be doing their health timelines, and then things kind of calmed down, and that's when my issues started happening, right?
00:39:33.039 --> 00:39:40.320
And so what's happening is essentially when you're under a lot of stress, you've got cortisol, keeping your inflammation like in check.
00:39:40.480 --> 00:39:55.599
Yes, you feel like uh, you know, like you're gonna rage and like you've had too many cups of coffee, but this is kind of fueling you, but it also breaks down your body's ability to defend itself, including and build itself up, including your gut barrier.
00:39:55.760 --> 00:40:00.079
So when that's happening, you're gonna be at risk for catching these gut infections like H.
00:40:00.239 --> 00:40:07.199
pylori or blastocystis hominus, giardia, there's hundreds of different things that can impact your gut barrier, right?
00:40:07.440 --> 00:40:12.079
And they're gonna kind of be there and your high cortisol is gonna be managing the inflammation.
00:40:12.239 --> 00:40:22.800
Now, when your cortisol kind of gets into that normalized state or even into that low state, that inflammation from your gut is gonna go unmanaged.
00:40:22.880 --> 00:40:32.880
And that's where the full breakdown is going to happen, and you're gonna have progressively more and more symptoms, potentially have autoimmunity, like I did, right?
00:40:33.280 --> 00:40:38.960
So the thing is, I guess it all starts with the gut, right?
00:40:39.039 --> 00:40:40.239
Or it all starts with stress.
00:40:40.320 --> 00:40:40.719
I don't know.
00:40:40.800 --> 00:40:43.440
Both both both kind of happen chicken or the egg.
00:40:43.599 --> 00:40:49.599
So I wrote a book about the adrenals or the stress response, how to get that dialed in, like really detailed going into it.
00:40:49.760 --> 00:41:14.079
And also, I really wanted people with IBS to get more than just like lip service of eliminate more foods or go on a low FODMAP diet, or it's just SIBO from even the functional medicine, well-meaning approach to the standard medical, conventional medical approaches, like here's a med, here's a prescription, or stress less, go to yoga, right?
00:41:14.239 --> 00:41:18.239
So I wanted to peep to show people what were some of the underlying causes.
00:41:18.320 --> 00:41:21.920
And I've identified over 30 of them that can cause IBS.
00:41:22.639 --> 00:41:31.920
And it sometimes is very straightforward where you just figure out you have an enzyme deficiency and you take this enzyme and holy cow, things just work better.
00:41:32.239 --> 00:41:35.360
And sometimes it's like one food that you're reacting to.
00:41:35.519 --> 00:41:38.159
Sometimes it's one infection that you might have.
00:41:38.320 --> 00:41:50.639
Sometimes it's a combination of the things, but it's a it's important to, I guess, to get to the root cause versus being like, oh yeah, young women just tend to have IBS, or we that's just a thing that women have.
00:41:50.800 --> 00:41:52.159
It's just so common.
00:41:52.480 --> 00:42:11.199
Because I know when I was um a young woman, it was just kind of brushed off as something that was yeah, you're in grad school, you're in college, like that's just how many times do you get on like TikTok or Instagram and it just seems like we have completely normalized stomach pain and we have normalized bloating.
00:42:11.280 --> 00:42:20.719
It's like every single girl you see is like, oh, my stomach hurts, and like we just it's just so nor it's become normal that it's just like we don't have to feel this way.
00:42:20.800 --> 00:42:22.719
We don't have to eat food and react this way.
00:42:22.880 --> 00:42:28.239
So this book is kind of like your Hashimoto's breakdown, I'm assuming with IBS.
00:42:28.320 --> 00:42:30.320
It's like they're finding the root cause.
00:42:30.880 --> 00:42:31.599
Absolutely.
00:42:31.840 --> 00:42:33.840
So it's a lot like finding the root cause.
00:42:33.920 --> 00:42:35.920
It's the root cause of IBS.
00:42:36.400 --> 00:42:48.639
So it is not necessarily like a light read, but it will help, I hope, 98% of the time figure out what's driving your IBS so you can be done with it once and for all.
00:42:48.800 --> 00:42:57.840
Not have to take medications, not to have to be on a unnecessarily restrictive diet and not look like you had a burrito baby every day of your life at 8 p.m.
00:42:58.639 --> 00:42:59.519
Literally.
00:42:59.840 --> 00:43:02.079
So, okay, so that's kind of a book.
00:43:02.320 --> 00:43:09.679
If anybody's struggling with these gut issues, don't really have an answer, maybe have had testing done and they go, uh I feel like that's another thing.
00:43:09.760 --> 00:43:18.480
You get testing done and they just go, IBS, because there's no like really exact testing for it, that they just kind of give you that and say, go along your way.
00:43:18.639 --> 00:43:22.320
Here's uh diarrhea medicine if you need it, and here's constipation.
00:43:22.480 --> 00:43:27.039
Like, I know one girl, and I couldn't believe this when she told me this, is one of my friends.
00:43:27.199 --> 00:43:33.840
And she clearly does not have anxiety because I can't believe she does this when she has she clearly has some sort of IBS.
00:43:34.079 --> 00:43:36.480
When she has diarrhea, she takes a diarrhea medication.
00:43:36.639 --> 00:43:40.000
When she has constipation, she takes laxatives, and it's every other day.
00:43:40.159 --> 00:43:44.559
So she is taking some type of stool medication.
00:43:45.039 --> 00:43:48.159
I'm I'm just like what and normalized it.
00:43:48.239 --> 00:43:49.599
Like she's like, it's no big deal.
00:43:49.679 --> 00:43:50.800
I'm like, it is a big deal.
00:43:50.880 --> 00:43:52.320
Like you shouldn't have to do that.
00:43:52.480 --> 00:43:54.480
And and it also can't be good for you.
00:43:54.719 --> 00:43:56.960
So you need to figure out why that's happening.
00:43:57.039 --> 00:44:00.960
I'm just such a I'm such a why my mom said I've Was always like this too.
00:44:01.039 --> 00:44:02.159
I just need to know why.
00:44:02.400 --> 00:44:05.280
I don't, I have to know deeper.
00:44:05.440 --> 00:44:15.760
And I feel like that often gets labeled as hypochondriac and all those things, but it's like, no, it's it, I don't want to feel this way, and I don't have to feel this way, and I know I don't have to feel this way.
00:44:16.000 --> 00:44:19.280
So I think that what you do is amazing.
00:44:19.360 --> 00:44:26.719
And I'm going to be buying, I've already been looking into it, the IBS book, um, because I've got all my gut issues too.
00:44:26.880 --> 00:44:30.639
And so keep doing what you're doing because it's really helpful.
00:44:30.719 --> 00:44:36.239
And you're you're the you're the turning point in a lot of things for people.
00:44:36.320 --> 00:44:45.280
And I don't know if you I hope you give yourself that credit because I have I think I've watched you on like 40 different podcasts, and I'm not even exaggerating.
00:44:45.360 --> 00:44:51.599
Like when I go to put a podcast in, you're just so helpful and you're willing to go against the grain.
00:44:51.679 --> 00:44:52.639
And I love that.
00:44:52.880 --> 00:44:54.800
So keep doing it.
00:44:55.280 --> 00:44:56.159
Thank you so much.
00:44:56.239 --> 00:44:58.559
That really means so much to me.
00:44:58.639 --> 00:45:00.480
I so, so appreciate that.
00:45:00.559 --> 00:45:03.039
It was Your Your next one needs to be cholesterol.
00:45:03.280 --> 00:45:06.400
Like why we have high cholesterol and what to do about it.
00:45:06.559 --> 00:45:09.039
Like why so many people have high cholesterol.
00:45:09.599 --> 00:45:10.239
Interesting.
00:45:10.559 --> 00:45:11.599
That's your next one.
00:45:11.920 --> 00:45:13.920
I was gonna write a dive for us.
00:45:14.239 --> 00:45:14.880
Yeah.
00:45:15.119 --> 00:45:18.639
I I'll I will add that to my list of future things to write.
00:45:18.880 --> 00:45:30.000
But it's when you're a hypochondriac until you actually figure out what's wrong with you, what's been going on, and then you make some changes and then you feel amazing again.
00:45:30.159 --> 00:45:40.239
Then you're no longer a hypochondriac, then you're a person who I guess had your intuition or knew your body best and figured out a way out.
00:45:40.480 --> 00:45:50.320
So I think that label has been very much used against women for many, many years, much to a disservice where women we tend to be more intuitive.
00:45:50.800 --> 00:45:58.559
And we are very smart, especially when we're smart, we tend to be, I guess, wanting to ask the right questions, right?
00:45:58.639 --> 00:46:06.400
And sometimes when conventional medicine doesn't have the answers to our questions, that's when they might label somebody a hypochondriac, right?
00:46:06.639 --> 00:46:08.400
Yeah, they don't like the pushback.
00:46:08.719 --> 00:46:09.039
Yeah.
00:46:09.199 --> 00:46:13.840
It it it's like you can't do anything about your thyroid antibodies, is what I heard.
00:46:14.079 --> 00:46:16.960
And then I figured out that you so don't worry about them.
00:46:17.039 --> 00:46:19.840
You're a hypochondriac if you worry about your thyroid antibodies.
00:46:20.000 --> 00:46:24.800
And I'm like, wow, I was able to get them into remission and get rid of all my how weird is that?
00:46:25.199 --> 00:46:25.440
Yeah.
00:46:25.679 --> 00:46:27.440
Crazy, crazy how that worked out, huh?
00:46:27.679 --> 00:46:28.079
Crazy.
00:46:28.239 --> 00:46:37.440
And also it's hard when you're around people who they see you having all these physical symptoms and dealing with these, all these things, and they are like, oh, she always has something.
00:46:37.599 --> 00:46:38.960
I think that's such a hard thing.
00:46:39.119 --> 00:46:48.400
So you you're the light in that community for people because one, you're honest about your story, but two, you're showing you don't have to accept those answers for the doctor from the doctor.
00:46:48.559 --> 00:46:51.119
You can get better, and here's how to do it.
00:46:51.280 --> 00:46:52.880
And so that is so important.
00:46:52.960 --> 00:47:00.880
And I hope somebody listening to this, and I know people listening to this because I get messages all the time of I have low ferritin, I have this, I what do I do?
00:47:01.039 --> 00:47:04.800
And I'm like, I wish I could help people, but I'm not an expert in this either.
00:47:05.039 --> 00:47:07.920
So keep having the conversations.
00:47:08.079 --> 00:47:11.519
And if anybody is listening to this, you can find Dr.
00:47:11.679 --> 00:47:13.679
Wentz literally all over the internet.
00:47:14.000 --> 00:47:18.239
I will go on YouTube a lot and just type in her name and watch all of her videos.
00:47:18.480 --> 00:47:21.199
Uh, but her Instagram is also amazing.
00:47:21.519 --> 00:47:23.840
And I'm excited about your new program.
00:47:23.920 --> 00:47:25.599
I'm actually gonna look into that myself.
00:47:25.760 --> 00:47:28.079
So hopefully there's a spot.
00:47:28.480 --> 00:47:30.320
Yeah, we'll save you a spot, Taylor.
00:47:30.480 --> 00:47:30.800
Of course.
00:47:31.119 --> 00:47:31.440
Okay.
00:47:31.840 --> 00:47:33.280
Well, thank you for coming on.
00:47:33.440 --> 00:47:39.199
It was I gained so much knowledge and I'm excited to read all the new books and the protocols.
00:47:39.519 --> 00:47:41.360
Taylor, thank you so much for having me.
00:47:41.440 --> 00:47:43.519
What a what what a pleasure to be here with you.
00:47:43.679 --> 00:47:46.800
Thank you for the work that you do to empower so many women.
00:47:46.960 --> 00:47:55.599
I know it can feel like you're alone when you're dealing with thyroid issues or anxiety or gut issues, but a lot of us have been there, done that, gone through it.
00:47:55.760 --> 00:47:57.440
You know, some of us have written books.
00:47:57.599 --> 00:48:02.880
So hopefully people listening today will feel less alone and we'll find some solutions.
00:48:03.199 --> 00:48:03.599
Yeah.
00:48:03.760 --> 00:48:04.559
Well, thank you.
00:48:04.639 --> 00:48:06.559
And I hope you guys have a great week.
00:48:06.800 --> 00:48:07.440
Bye.
