ABOUT THIS EPISODE
Send Help: What Happens When Your Boss Crashes on an Island With You
A plane goes down. Two people wash ashore. One of them has actually trained for this. The other spent the flight mocking her survivor audition tape.
Send Help is a genre-blending thriller that starts as a survival story and becomes something far more complicated. Rachel McAdams plays Linda, the overqualified assistant whose corporate worth is measured by her shoes, her lunch drawer, and whether she fits the mold. Dylan O'Brien is Bradley Preston, the nepo baby boss who can't recognize competence even when it's keeping him alive.
The movie asks a question that cuts deeper than the island premise: What is a person's actual worth? Linda carries the company on her back, writes the presentations, does the work, but gets none of the credit or the promotion. On the island, the power dynamic inverts. Suddenly her skills matter. Suddenly she has authority. And suddenly the question becomes: how far will she go to keep it?
It's a sharp commentary on patriarchal systems versus community-based survival. It's also darkly funny, viscerally tense, and doesn't waste a single frame. Sam Raimi's direction keeps the genre from tipping too far in any direction. The result punches above its weight.
If you've been sleeping on this one, tonight's the night.

TRANSCRIPT 🔗
00:00:00.520 --> 00:00:07.360
What would you do if you were overworked and your arrogant boss and you had a plane crash on an island?
00:00:08.120 --> 00:00:11.260
Would you be able to survive or what would the power dynamic look like?
00:00:12.180 --> 00:00:19.500
Send Help is our movie today for movie Monday. It is Parallel Frequencies. I am just playing she is Coco. You are the Freqs
00:00:20.520 --> 00:00:22.880
Coco, what's up? What's going on over there?
00:00:23.300 --> 00:00:28.420
Um, I dare say if you and I were in a plane crash on a desert island, we gonna die
00:00:30.060 --> 00:00:33.640
Probably but I'm not a nepo baby boss and
00:00:34.580 --> 00:00:37.400
Yeah, you might have like you know, yeah
00:00:37.400 --> 00:00:40.600
And I got a couple skills and I don't act like
00:00:41.340 --> 00:00:44.060
Bradley did in in this so
00:00:44.060 --> 00:00:45.780
You know
00:00:45.780 --> 00:00:46.540
Yeah
00:00:48.080 --> 00:00:52.220
We might survive we'll leave that up to the Freqs. Well, we'll ask them Freqs
00:00:52.220 --> 00:00:56.100
Do you think if me and Coco crashed on an island when we survive?
00:00:56.100 --> 00:00:59.400
Put it out there how long over under how long?
00:01:00.860 --> 00:01:03.820
We're gonna make it I got like three days
00:01:04.620 --> 00:01:06.940
Exactly, right? I don't know though cuz
00:01:07.640 --> 00:01:13.320
I've been surviving pretty hard here lately. I I just had a kindergarten graduation. That's why
00:01:13.320 --> 00:01:16.120
we're surviving may
00:01:17.060 --> 00:01:17.740
and
00:01:18.460 --> 00:01:25.460
Any Freqs out there who are parents wrapping up the school year? Like tell us how you're surviving may
00:01:25.460 --> 00:01:27.120
How was the graduation?
00:01:28.140 --> 00:01:32.580
It was it was great. It was it was cute. I guess that's what you say
00:01:32.580 --> 00:01:38.640
You know what it was I got a text from my own dad and he said congratulations only 12 more to go
00:01:38.640 --> 00:01:40.880
I was like, oh my god. Yeah
00:01:41.700 --> 00:01:43.700
That many graduations
00:01:44.300 --> 00:01:51.520
Cuz typically they don't do like first grade graduation and second exactly and all that right but I used to be kindergarten teacher
00:01:51.520 --> 00:01:57.280
So I used to prep my kindergartners for their kindergarten graduation. We did the caps and gowns
00:01:57.280 --> 00:02:05.400
Oh, yeah, you rent a stage and an auditorium for it at my school. They went all out and I can tell you
00:02:05.400 --> 00:02:10.480
kindergarten teachers we work really hard at getting those kids ready and
00:02:11.380 --> 00:02:18.560
You know, I was really good at like I would have programs where the kids were singing in around
00:02:18.560 --> 00:02:21.640
There was like parts they had props
00:02:21.640 --> 00:02:27.120
I mean I really got went all in on it like really worked hard on it and then I realized after a couple years
00:02:27.900 --> 00:02:31.880
Parents don't really care if they did a great job in their program or not
00:02:31.880 --> 00:02:35.400
They're just gonna be so thrilled and taking pictures. That was it
00:02:36.320 --> 00:02:41.020
Yeah, bunch of bunch of that was happening. We didn't care. We were in there smiling clicking
00:02:41.020 --> 00:02:46.460
You know, it was that's how it was all the kids could fall down and it was still be a great program
00:02:46.980 --> 00:02:49.760
I think some of them did. Oh, I think I saw Amanda's kid in there
00:02:49.760 --> 00:02:54.440
I think he was over there falling over and mine was too and their little buddy kids crying
00:02:54.440 --> 00:02:58.240
Sometimes they just bust up crying in the middle of it and you're like, yeah, it is what I know
00:02:58.240 --> 00:03:02.760
You never know but as well what if you've been watching you watch anything lately over the weekend? Maybe? Yeah
00:03:02.760 --> 00:03:10.280
Our family just finished on uh, netflix. Um, the second season of secret millionaire. We loved the first season
00:03:10.280 --> 00:03:13.080
So we had to watch this. It's one of those reality shows
00:03:13.080 --> 00:03:14.520
Where they're competing
00:03:15.300 --> 00:03:21.040
And I love it because there's a lot of intrigue and they make it harder and harder and harder for the contestants
00:03:21.040 --> 00:03:23.480
So they have all these people move into a mansion together
00:03:24.540 --> 00:03:25.020
and
00:03:26.400 --> 00:03:31.660
In their rooms, there's going to be a box and only one of them when they open the box
00:03:31.660 --> 00:03:34.340
It will have a million dollars in it. Oh
00:03:34.340 --> 00:03:35.200
Is a millionaire
00:03:36.360 --> 00:03:43.840
But everybody else in the house is slowly trying to figure out who the millionaire is and they get to vote off somebody
00:03:44.520 --> 00:03:50.940
At the end of every episode. So if they vote the person off a new millionaire is chosen the next day
00:03:51.580 --> 00:03:57.960
but if they don't catch that millionaire and the millionaire is going to have all these like secret, um
00:03:59.020 --> 00:04:03.720
Agendas that they give them so they have to like do their agenda so that they can
00:04:03.720 --> 00:04:07.920
Get a special thing like they get to vote an extra person off or they get
00:04:07.920 --> 00:04:09.820
You know, they get these little perks
00:04:09.820 --> 00:04:15.840
But if they don't do their agenda then they get three votes counted against them in the
00:04:15.840 --> 00:04:16.100
voting
00:04:16.740 --> 00:04:22.220
So they have to do their agenda like they have to but the agenda is also going to kind of expose them
00:04:23.040 --> 00:04:25.380
to everybody now this
00:04:25.900 --> 00:04:29.660
This is eerily similar to a show called the mole
00:04:29.660 --> 00:04:36.080
From way back and then they brought it back on netflix. It's on netflix. There's a newer season from a couple years back
00:04:36.080 --> 00:04:38.920
But I've always loved this premise
00:04:39.480 --> 00:04:44.480
And the mole is the same type of thing except for it's just one person's the mole. They got to sabotage the game
00:04:44.480 --> 00:04:46.180
They're trying to win money
00:04:46.940 --> 00:04:51.780
If the mole does his job they get certain. Yeah, it's the same kind of concept, but I love
00:04:51.780 --> 00:04:54.040
these shows that do this where it's
00:04:54.840 --> 00:04:57.900
Making people come out of their comfort zones to play because
00:04:57.900 --> 00:05:02.480
I love how some of them are like they start off. They're like, oh I'm not gonna lie cheat and steal
00:05:02.480 --> 00:05:05.800
And that's what they do the entire game exactly what they need to do
00:05:05.800 --> 00:05:07.300
You can't blame them
00:05:07.300 --> 00:05:11.420
They're they're in it for the long haul but then you have these ones
00:05:11.420 --> 00:05:16.900
I love in a secret millionaire. You have these one contestants once in a while that will say something like
00:05:17.660 --> 00:05:22.580
I think I'm getting away with it. I don't think it's up to me and then you hear all these other
00:05:23.180 --> 00:05:26.880
Um, you know confessionals and they're like, I totally think it's her
00:05:26.880 --> 00:05:32.960
Yeah, they're like she's so obvious and we are getting her, you know, and it's just hilarious to me
00:05:32.960 --> 00:05:38.900
Let me tell you what I've been watching I caught one and it's not it's not a surprise it might be right now
00:05:38.900 --> 00:05:41.240
Because it's top of mind for lots
00:05:41.960 --> 00:05:45.360
Widows bay on Apple TV+. Holy shit
00:05:46.240 --> 00:05:51.720
That's all I can say matthew reese. I love matthew reese. He was on the americans. I love that tv show
00:05:51.720 --> 00:05:53.820
He did a great job on that and I thought
00:05:53.820 --> 00:05:56.320
You know, I was like here's the the
00:05:57.020 --> 00:06:02.700
Come out party for matthew reese. Here he is. Welcome. Welcome to the to the world of acting, you know, and
00:06:02.960 --> 00:06:04.880
this show
00:06:04.880 --> 00:06:10.240
It's you gotta you gotta check it out. They're four episodes deep in episode four. I did one of those
00:06:10.240 --> 00:06:13.640
Like right off the couch like oh my god, what what?
00:06:14.720 --> 00:06:19.920
I love that. It's up there. I love it. We got we'll talk. I think we gotta put that on our docket
00:06:20.760 --> 00:06:24.940
Soon and it's it's a weekly every wednesday. I think they got a couple more episodes
00:06:25.560 --> 00:06:26.980
You could catch up
00:06:26.980 --> 00:06:28.820
They're only 40 minutes long
00:06:28.820 --> 00:06:30.840
But you gotta go check out that one
00:06:30.840 --> 00:06:37.300
I get to start recording myself watching something for the first time because I got super into watching this girl on
00:06:37.300 --> 00:06:44.420
She's you know, probably like tick tock instagram. She's probably really popular, but she watches star wars for the first time and so
00:06:44.420 --> 00:06:50.900
Flip is just her watching star war like she's like you guys I've never seen star wars before I'm gonna watch it
00:06:51.440 --> 00:06:55.040
And there is something about watching someone watch something like that
00:06:55.040 --> 00:07:01.280
For the first time that I was hooked I wanted to see a reaction when you know it comes to
00:07:02.100 --> 00:07:05.300
Finding out darth vader is luke's father. She's like
00:07:05.300 --> 00:07:07.000
What I'm like
00:07:07.520 --> 00:07:09.000
This is so satisfying
00:07:09.760 --> 00:07:11.640
It's such a weird way
00:07:11.640 --> 00:07:19.000
Yeah, I love I love it, but let's get to movie monday and Send Help a movie that was quietly
00:07:19.780 --> 00:07:22.560
Added to hulu kind of dropped out of nowhere
00:07:23.360 --> 00:07:27.940
Started making a name put it on the banner up there and that's when I finally said you know what I better click on this
00:07:27.940 --> 00:07:29.200
and watch it
00:07:29.200 --> 00:07:29.880
and
00:07:30.560 --> 00:07:34.140
I was I was shocked at what I saw. It's not your typical
00:07:34.720 --> 00:07:39.520
you know, there's a lot of twists and turns in this in this Send Help flip with
00:07:39.520 --> 00:07:42.180
with a star cast sam raimi
00:07:43.000 --> 00:07:43.880
Directing and
00:07:44.400 --> 00:07:50.740
I love sam raimi from way back, but you got rachel mcadams crushing it by the way and dylan o'brien
00:07:51.760 --> 00:07:54.360
Crushing it in his own way. We we hate him
00:07:55.040 --> 00:07:58.840
Right. We hate this guy bradley preston in the movie and
00:08:00.480 --> 00:08:06.980
He comes across and you think he's got some redeeming qualities and he just doubles down and it makes it even worse so
00:08:06.980 --> 00:08:13.020
He gets what's coming to him. But what you think about this you've been this has been on your radar for a while, too
00:08:13.020 --> 00:08:13.700
I think
00:08:13.700 --> 00:08:19.140
Yeah, I remember when I first came out and seeing the trailer and sometimes I said this is going to be great and I think
00:08:19.700 --> 00:08:23.620
Like I you know, like a lot of other things you just kind of forget about it or
00:08:24.340 --> 00:08:28.680
You know move on with life. So when it did drop on who I was so excited. I was like, oh my gosh
00:08:28.680 --> 00:08:30.040
We're finally going to see it
00:08:30.040 --> 00:08:32.120
so so
00:08:32.120 --> 00:08:38.540
Such a good premise of that blend of horror and comedy. I mean, I think they did a fantastic job, you know
00:08:38.540 --> 00:08:45.400
There was once a time when horror was horror and comedy was comedy and now we live in this beautiful age
00:08:46.040 --> 00:08:51.580
Where you get to watch a horror movie and laugh through it too, and I love that I'm here boy genre
00:08:51.580 --> 00:08:53.780
Blending is my favorite
00:08:54.360 --> 00:08:56.820
Types of movies like blend them all together
00:08:56.820 --> 00:09:03.460
Everything is a horror movie. I want to have some moments where I'm like hilarious. I'm having the best time
00:09:03.460 --> 00:09:07.640
Yeah, yeah, and this is one this definitely is one and
00:09:08.400 --> 00:09:11.480
simple premise really if you look at it because this is
00:09:12.040 --> 00:09:13.860
the typical classic
00:09:13.860 --> 00:09:15.980
Who are you when the lights go out?
00:09:16.460 --> 00:09:22.900
You know, who are you when you don't have a linkedin profile to look at and they they joke about they make fun of
00:09:23.860 --> 00:09:29.040
Her on the airplane remember that and they're like they find her survivor audition tape and they're making fun of her
00:09:29.920 --> 00:09:33.620
I wish let me tell you I got a survivor audition tape out there somewhere
00:09:34.520 --> 00:09:38.360
Do you really? I do I applied I went down and this is way back
00:09:38.360 --> 00:09:43.300
I faked. Oh my god. I can't believe I'm gonna tell you this this video is out there. I hope
00:09:43.300 --> 00:09:49.740
It becomes this up and show this video that would be great. I took a stuffed animal
00:09:49.740 --> 00:09:51.460
And I think of ketchup
00:09:52.240 --> 00:09:54.860
And I took my shirt off and I was out there was like in the snow
00:09:54.860 --> 00:10:02.860
This was like this was in mephis. It was cold snow and my shirt off. I had I had some of the the the uh,
00:10:02.860 --> 00:10:04.900
Ketchup on me like blood and I was over there eating
00:10:05.900 --> 00:10:10.900
Like I was eating raw meat out of just living off the land, you know, and I told him I'll say I know I'm
00:10:10.960 --> 00:10:14.920
I'm ready to whatever it's out there. I did it
00:10:14.920 --> 00:10:18.400
They could they could have easily made fun of me, but they did it to her
00:10:18.980 --> 00:10:21.680
And then you find out you're like, oh no
00:10:22.720 --> 00:10:25.400
They shouldn't have done that because uh, they're gonna need her
00:10:25.920 --> 00:10:26.560
you know
00:10:27.120 --> 00:10:32.920
Let's talk about that moment and every moment leading up to that in the movie first because I would like to know
00:10:32.920 --> 00:10:35.400
especially for the Freqs who
00:10:35.400 --> 00:10:39.780
Have watched this movie. Was there any part of you that related to?
00:10:39.780 --> 00:10:46.020
Her um, like were you more related to her or were more more feeling like the bro?
00:10:46.920 --> 00:10:52.340
The bro energy was what you related to or resonated with because I was definitely
00:10:52.980 --> 00:10:55.100
more like her I was
00:10:55.880 --> 00:11:00.340
Probably, you know growing up in elementary school middle school like a little bit nerdy
00:11:01.000 --> 00:11:04.180
Wore those oversized t-shirts because I did not address yet
00:11:04.940 --> 00:11:08.080
Didn't know how to do anything. I you know
00:11:08.080 --> 00:11:11.620
It was just kind of like how come nobody likes me
00:11:12.580 --> 00:11:18.920
And that kind of desperation for like wanting to be a part of the team wanting to be like, oh you guys are going to karaoke
00:11:19.440 --> 00:11:24.080
Yeah, I could totally kill it on this song you guys. What time are we meeting and they're just like
00:11:25.200 --> 00:11:29.220
No, we can't have this all join us. We don't uh
00:11:29.220 --> 00:11:30.940
But this made me think
00:11:31.600 --> 00:11:37.800
Of that phrase and once I heard this phrase it changed my life was you don't owe the world pretty
00:11:38.300 --> 00:11:42.960
Mmm, and that is so important because look at Rachel McAdams in this role
00:11:44.700 --> 00:11:46.640
Not attractive in the first
00:11:47.260 --> 00:11:52.880
Which is wild. Yeah, and she's gorgeous. We all know Rachel McAdams is gorgeous. We know that
00:11:53.540 --> 00:11:56.480
But what if we are all that we are all
00:11:57.600 --> 00:12:02.720
The unattractive and the attractive what if we can all be either or both or anything, right?
00:12:03.080 --> 00:12:07.580
Like the episode side field where the girl was one way in the light and another way in the
00:12:07.580 --> 00:12:13.020
Remember that one? That's great. Yeah. Yeah, but no, you're right. And I think I related more to
00:12:14.220 --> 00:12:19.580
Her as well. I don't I you've known me for a while. I don't really have that bro energy where I'm going to make you fun of
00:12:20.260 --> 00:12:25.080
Somebody I'm definitely not making fun of somebody's damn survivor tape when I've got my own out there floating around
00:12:25.660 --> 00:12:26.740
You know, so
00:12:26.740 --> 00:12:33.420
Yeah, I don't I don't I don't do that. So I see myself more like where she was as well and I think it's funny
00:12:34.040 --> 00:12:36.280
You you point out that she's
00:12:36.280 --> 00:12:40.560
Not attractive in the beginning, but she's highly attractive once she gets on that island
00:12:40.560 --> 00:12:42.900
I love that part
00:12:42.900 --> 00:12:43.940
Yeah
00:12:44.600 --> 00:12:51.020
I love that because who else who how many people are going to be attractive when they've been stranded on a desert island?
00:12:51.560 --> 00:12:54.680
They're soaking wet. They're starving. They don't got
00:12:54.680 --> 00:13:05.360
Moisturizer they don't got their makeup. They don't got like all the things that make us, you know
00:13:05.360 --> 00:13:12.940
Out there she's like in her natural raw element and she actually finds her beauty there in that
00:13:12.940 --> 00:13:19.720
I mean you could be real if the sail towers go down for more than six hours half people out there trading their prized possessions
00:13:19.720 --> 00:13:20.940
for a single bar
00:13:21.600 --> 00:13:22.540
of service
00:13:23.300 --> 00:13:23.900
so
00:13:23.900 --> 00:13:26.720
Yes, I think rachel
00:13:27.380 --> 00:13:30.160
mcadams and her character I keep calling rachel mcadams because
00:13:30.860 --> 00:13:33.040
That's that's it. But linda linda little
00:13:33.040 --> 00:13:40.360
And we find that out too and that plays in her her shoes. I love that that thing too that that whole
00:13:40.360 --> 00:13:42.100
part of it too, but
00:13:42.100 --> 00:13:45.080
Yeah, this is uh, I was made fun of for my shoes
00:13:45.680 --> 00:13:46.600
Oh, yeah
00:13:47.280 --> 00:13:54.080
Yeah, I have been there. I've been this whole movie is a mirror for how deeply alienated
00:13:54.900 --> 00:13:58.680
We've all become from basic survival instincts and from each other
00:13:58.680 --> 00:14:04.400
And you do that by making fun of the shoes and making fun of a survivor audition tape
00:14:04.400 --> 00:14:06.000
How else do you want to alienate somebody?
00:14:07.080 --> 00:14:09.100
They should have been in there saying all this is awesome
00:14:09.100 --> 00:14:10.540
That they should have said
00:14:11.220 --> 00:14:15.480
Yeah, they should have said oh this survivor thing is awesome. Did they call you?
00:14:16.320 --> 00:14:18.060
That's it's that easy. It's that easy
00:14:18.800 --> 00:14:19.760
Yeah, okay
00:14:19.760 --> 00:14:21.600
So if it's that easy
00:14:21.600 --> 00:14:24.780
What is that bro energy? What is it?
00:14:25.500 --> 00:14:30.020
And it's also mean girl energy, I mean, oh, yeah, let me be fair. It's
00:14:30.020 --> 00:14:32.440
Across the board. They're just types, right?
00:14:32.940 --> 00:14:36.540
But in this movie particularly we see it as kind of this bro
00:14:37.780 --> 00:14:41.560
Energy, I don't know how else to say it. These are um
00:14:41.560 --> 00:14:44.380
Yeah, the summers eve type guys like they're just like
00:14:45.840 --> 00:14:46.400
uh
00:14:46.400 --> 00:14:47.200
we
00:14:48.020 --> 00:14:51.980
We get each other. We're totally gonna promote each other
00:14:51.980 --> 00:14:58.580
We are totally going to you know have this bro thing going on and this girl has to use dry shampoo
00:14:58.580 --> 00:15:03.760
You know, she's not one of us. She's not getting the promotion. She's not
00:15:03.760 --> 00:15:06.220
But she's willing to do the work for us
00:15:06.220 --> 00:15:09.900
And that's another point that I that I think that is really important
00:15:09.900 --> 00:15:15.100
If you're too good at your job, you won't get a promotion is never the you that we're seeing here, right?
00:15:16.220 --> 00:15:20.020
never and that goes for anybody that's male or female in that spot because
00:15:20.600 --> 00:15:23.300
There's a lot of people I know have been there myself included
00:15:23.300 --> 00:15:26.960
To where you get too valuable in that role and they can't replace you
00:15:26.960 --> 00:15:32.300
It's going to cost them more to replace you in that role than promote you and bring somebody else into that that can fill that spot
00:15:32.300 --> 00:15:33.080
And that's crazy
00:15:33.740 --> 00:15:36.660
The bro energy a lot of that is a hive mind, too
00:15:36.660 --> 00:15:43.700
It is but in this movie preston still cares that bro energy even when he crashes on that island and he's got nobody else
00:15:43.700 --> 00:15:45.340
Yeah, except for
00:15:45.340 --> 00:15:49.440
survivor audition tape who was a real survival she'd been practiced she'd been
00:15:49.440 --> 00:15:52.700
She had educated herself for this
00:15:52.700 --> 00:15:55.820
She wants to stay that tells you something
00:15:56.480 --> 00:15:59.160
Yeah, and she goes through some crazy extremes
00:15:59.760 --> 00:16:01.340
To make that happen
00:16:01.340 --> 00:16:07.160
Yes, and then you kind of get into a debate as we go along of like who's the villain here?
00:16:07.480 --> 00:16:09.680
Exactly because at first
00:16:09.680 --> 00:16:15.360
No question bradley preston is a villain. He's horrible to her. He's so condescending. He's so
00:16:15.660 --> 00:16:21.880
Awful even as he depends on her for his survival and she's being very generous from the very beginning
00:16:21.880 --> 00:16:27.060
She could be awful to him and she's like I need to keep you hydrated. I need to keep you fed. I'm gonna
00:16:27.060 --> 00:16:31.100
I'm gonna take care of you. It's gonna be okay. We're gonna get through this and
00:16:32.000 --> 00:16:33.880
Um, and as she's taking care of him
00:16:33.880 --> 00:16:38.120
He's still acting like I'm your boss. I'm above you
00:16:38.120 --> 00:16:41.520
So it takes a couple of rounds
00:16:42.320 --> 00:16:48.520
Putting him in his place which none of us I don't think the audience isn't unhappy to see at all or no
00:16:49.280 --> 00:16:51.280
at all, we love seeing his
00:16:52.100 --> 00:16:54.180
moment of
00:16:54.180 --> 00:16:56.280
How low can you go?
00:16:56.880 --> 00:16:57.460
Yeah
00:16:57.460 --> 00:16:58.800
Eating the bread
00:16:59.520 --> 00:17:04.080
And there's some crazy see I love that scene where she's got him. She strips him naked
00:17:04.620 --> 00:17:06.960
Waist down got him up said she's gonna
00:17:08.160 --> 00:17:09.440
castrate him
00:17:09.440 --> 00:17:09.900
that
00:17:10.420 --> 00:17:17.580
I don't know why that didn't scare him enough right there. I mean you crash on an island you look across and at some point
00:17:18.080 --> 00:17:20.140
you gotta think like
00:17:20.140 --> 00:17:21.860
Okay, she's better at this than me
00:17:21.860 --> 00:17:26.580
But there you go that he was a nepo baby and probably didn't have any skills to be in that position to begin with
00:17:26.580 --> 00:17:28.700
He didn't know what real leadership was
00:17:29.300 --> 00:17:32.800
And didn't know how to recognize it and that's a problem when you crash
00:17:32.800 --> 00:17:34.140
on an island
00:17:35.340 --> 00:17:38.620
and you don't know what to do, right like because
00:17:39.260 --> 00:17:40.760
I just think that
00:17:40.760 --> 00:17:43.960
That you know that the script was brilliant
00:17:44.700 --> 00:17:47.580
At making this this character dynamic where it played on
00:17:48.240 --> 00:17:52.200
the the our hyper individualistic culture
00:17:52.860 --> 00:17:55.120
Everybody wants to save themselves
00:17:55.120 --> 00:17:59.420
But the the irony the the cosmic joke if you want to call it that
00:18:00.640 --> 00:18:04.940
Isolation is its own death sentence. You need a tribe
00:18:05.920 --> 00:18:09.260
You know, even if you can't stand them you still got to have them
00:18:09.260 --> 00:18:13.900
You still gotta have them people you see that on shows like survivor
00:18:14.860 --> 00:18:15.380
Alone
00:18:15.380 --> 00:18:21.740
Naked and afraid. Yes when their survival skills are put to the test. They're almost often
00:18:21.740 --> 00:18:27.540
More valuable together as a couple even when one is pulling more of the weight than the other
00:18:27.540 --> 00:18:32.780
I think even on naked and afraid I've seen enough episodes to see that they make it better
00:18:32.780 --> 00:18:34.920
They're more likely to make it together
00:18:34.920 --> 00:18:41.780
Than when one leaves or taps out early than the other one. It's a real struggle to get to the
00:18:41.780 --> 00:18:43.880
21 days or 40 days or whatever the
00:18:44.680 --> 00:18:46.920
Time is that they have to stay there but
00:18:46.920 --> 00:18:48.000
alone
00:18:48.580 --> 00:18:51.080
Uh when you watch the show alone you see
00:18:52.080 --> 00:18:56.440
The top survivalist people in the world are doing this show
00:18:57.260 --> 00:19:03.900
And even they struggle. I mean you watch them struggle to make a fire you they struggle to find food
00:19:04.500 --> 00:19:08.040
Um, so even if she's been training to be on survivor
00:19:08.920 --> 00:19:09.820
linda little
00:19:10.560 --> 00:19:17.340
The the fact that she is able to go to this island and actually like use those skills and thrive and then think to herself
00:19:17.340 --> 00:19:19.340
I might stay here forever
00:19:20.640 --> 00:19:24.400
To the point where she murders people to make it happen
00:19:24.400 --> 00:19:30.380
Yeah, which is I mean then you start to come into an argument of like well, she took it a little farther
00:19:30.380 --> 00:19:33.760
I think maybe yeah. Yeah, then it goes from uh,
00:19:33.900 --> 00:19:34.980
Then it's not
00:19:34.980 --> 00:19:39.960
Then once again, we've got a genre blender. It's not the uh
00:19:39.960 --> 00:19:41.400
female revenge movie
00:19:41.980 --> 00:19:45.360
Now we've got a criminal as well. You know, she's a kidnapper
00:19:46.920 --> 00:19:47.420
murderers
00:19:47.420 --> 00:19:53.620
Yeah, right. Yeah, we've got a problem here for sure, but I do want to talk about like you talk about community or doing it together
00:19:54.300 --> 00:19:57.760
the question that I have when I watch this movie is
00:19:57.760 --> 00:20:01.300
a question of worth a person's worth
00:20:01.300 --> 00:20:05.400
Because if you go to the beginning of the movie linda is treated
00:20:06.440 --> 00:20:07.000
like
00:20:07.000 --> 00:20:09.720
She's worthless. She's
00:20:09.720 --> 00:20:14.220
Disposable she's dispensable. It's it's like oh we were gonna give you a promotion
00:20:14.220 --> 00:20:21.380
But we decided not to because I mean they don't say it out right, but basically you don't meet our expectations
00:20:21.380 --> 00:20:24.340
Yeah, what a person should look like and smell like and
00:20:25.720 --> 00:20:28.660
What they have for lunch in their drawer or whatever, yeah
00:20:29.500 --> 00:20:34.840
But yeah, where is linda's worth where is her worth because she is obviously
00:20:35.780 --> 00:20:43.240
Capable smart a hard worker. She's carrying the company on her back as far as like what she's able to do
00:20:43.780 --> 00:20:46.400
So much so that they'll allow her
00:20:46.400 --> 00:20:49.640
To make the presentations and the reports
00:20:50.280 --> 00:20:53.860
But they won't let her present it. Yeah, you can come along
00:20:53.860 --> 00:20:56.120
She can do all the work on her laptop
00:20:56.640 --> 00:21:03.740
But they're not gonna be gonna actually thank her promoter pay her more like any of the things that count as worth, right?
00:21:04.260 --> 00:21:08.040
And then what is her worth on this island when it's just the two of them?
00:21:08.300 --> 00:21:11.760
Then where does her worth become and where is his worth?
00:21:12.240 --> 00:21:17.460
And when does it become like a patriarchal kind of like there's a hierarchy. I'm above you
00:21:18.420 --> 00:21:24.860
And what would it look like if it was more of a matriarchal community we all find our worth and our
00:21:24.860 --> 00:21:29.500
Contributions as a community together. No one is above or below anyone else
00:21:30.040 --> 00:21:34.060
Yeah, like right if me and you crash on an island
00:21:34.060 --> 00:21:37.500
What are we doing? What's gonna happen? We're gonna talk first. We're gonna
00:21:38.060 --> 00:21:40.360
This this is what I could see happening
00:21:40.940 --> 00:21:42.860
Okay, is we is is
00:21:43.440 --> 00:21:44.600
Me and you
00:21:44.600 --> 00:21:48.960
Discussing hey, what kind of survival skills do you have? Hey, what do you have?
00:21:49.500 --> 00:21:54.260
Hey, what should we do first? Let's talk about what would we do first? Coco?
00:21:54.380 --> 00:22:00.180
We would make a good team because although I don't have the skills of actually being able to do a whole lot. I'm
00:22:00.180 --> 00:22:03.340
very capable of following directions
00:22:03.340 --> 00:22:09.440
You are you are a person so I can be like here's what I think we should do
00:22:09.440 --> 00:22:12.940
Now you tell me how we get those things done and I will
00:22:13.500 --> 00:22:19.540
Do what I'm told and I've always seen it in you it is you do follow directs right to the tee
00:22:20.140 --> 00:22:21.520
but what what
00:22:21.520 --> 00:22:24.980
So so you would want me to come up with our first idea and then
00:22:24.980 --> 00:22:30.000
Because I know the first thing we should do like I think we should get fire. What do you think?
00:22:30.340 --> 00:22:31.900
I I'll be like people do
00:22:32.580 --> 00:22:33.880
I'd be like fire
00:22:34.420 --> 00:22:39.180
And I would I would look at you and say do you think fire will help us live?
00:22:39.460 --> 00:22:42.600
Because I think we should go find fresh water first
00:22:43.080 --> 00:22:50.600
Right. Yeah, we go go find our water source and then we'd probably be build a shelter and then get our fire and fire going
00:22:51.280 --> 00:22:57.740
Yeah, but it would that's this is it. It wouldn't be oh I'm I'm above you go go get the wood go get the
00:22:58.480 --> 00:23:03.260
You know, no, no, no, no, that's not how you do it. We would definitely be equals out there
00:23:03.900 --> 00:23:07.200
Even if you were following my direction and instruction
00:23:07.200 --> 00:23:12.160
I would still see you as an equal because we ain't getting out of there if I don't look at it like that
00:23:12.160 --> 00:23:13.760
Yeah better
00:23:14.440 --> 00:23:21.860
Yeah, and one thing to understand about like the difference between a matriarchal system and a patriarchal system is that there's the hierarchy
00:23:22.400 --> 00:23:27.060
In a patriarchal system of like I have authority over you you do what I say. No questions
00:23:27.760 --> 00:23:31.560
I'm not saying that's bad. I think there's a lot of situations where that's needed
00:23:31.560 --> 00:23:37.560
I understand like that's the way hospitals run like there has to be a hierarchy of like I have tenure here
00:23:37.560 --> 00:23:43.940
I have more, you know time and skills I put in and we don't have time for you to question me as an authority figure
00:23:43.940 --> 00:23:46.500
Right. So it saves lives
00:23:46.500 --> 00:23:52.440
I get there's a place for that but a matriarchal system is a little bit more like what you just described where like
00:23:52.440 --> 00:23:59.240
It's about everybody puts the community as a priority first rather than who's in charge of that
00:24:00.140 --> 00:24:04.040
community so it's just interesting that while linda
00:24:04.040 --> 00:24:09.560
Was in a system that was very patriarchal in her corporate job, she has like no
00:24:10.280 --> 00:24:13.720
Say and what happens to her? She's completely at the mercy of this
00:24:14.400 --> 00:24:16.040
nepo baby boss that she's got
00:24:16.040 --> 00:24:21.440
And then she switches those roles and then she's like you will do what I say
00:24:22.120 --> 00:24:25.080
Unquestioningly on this island because I have the authority
00:24:26.420 --> 00:24:32.200
What's your final thoughts on Send Help? Oh man, I just I always dreamed as a kid
00:24:32.840 --> 00:24:37.620
When I was really treated badly or made fun of
00:24:38.160 --> 00:24:43.420
Usually by boys. I'm just gonna say yeah, I want to get it. I also mean too, but
00:24:43.420 --> 00:24:50.580
But the way that you see it in this movie, that's I I recognize that more having having had that happen with boys
00:24:50.580 --> 00:24:52.200
when I was in elementary school than girls
00:24:52.840 --> 00:24:57.320
and I would have loved an opportunity to get back at them or to
00:24:58.620 --> 00:24:59.140
show
00:24:59.140 --> 00:25:01.200
Show them up somehow
00:25:01.760 --> 00:25:07.680
A dream come true. So that was really satisfying to watch in this movie is to see that moment where she stabs the rat
00:25:08.620 --> 00:25:10.480
Yeah, and wrote a feral
00:25:12.400 --> 00:25:12.920
Primal
00:25:14.080 --> 00:25:18.000
like um almost like a tiger, I don't know how else to describe it. She's just like
00:25:19.200 --> 00:25:24.080
Don't question me again or this will be your testicles. Yeah
00:25:24.080 --> 00:25:29.080
It's satisfying I'm not gonna lie. I don't agree with the murdering but that was fun to watch
00:25:29.080 --> 00:25:33.380
It was and then that was a nice twist I think that's a sam raimi
00:25:34.000 --> 00:25:35.780
you know type of
00:25:35.780 --> 00:25:40.740
Thing to throw in there to do and it kept they could have kept the movie straight and just done it
00:25:40.740 --> 00:25:42.940
without the murder and
00:25:42.940 --> 00:25:46.940
It would have still been great. It was still been great because we got that character dynamic
00:25:46.940 --> 00:25:49.280
We get to see we get to sit here and break down to talk about
00:25:49.820 --> 00:25:52.100
I've been in that corporate world. I've seen
00:25:52.100 --> 00:25:54.140
That type of stuff go on
00:25:54.140 --> 00:25:56.460
And maybe not recognized it
00:25:56.460 --> 00:25:59.600
At the moment but thought about it later and realized oh
00:25:59.600 --> 00:26:03.840
That's why all the girls were piled up in my tiny ass little studio
00:26:04.460 --> 00:26:09.500
They felt better in there. They felt good around me. I didn't I wasn't doing that stuff
00:26:10.060 --> 00:26:12.100
my heart wouldn't use
00:26:12.100 --> 00:26:19.400
Make them feel uh seen and safe and you know at least that their contributions are recognized and appreciated
00:26:19.400 --> 00:26:23.640
I hope if you if I ever worked with you and I made you feel that way hit me up
00:26:24.140 --> 00:26:30.140
I want to hear that I want to know I don't ask for much. I'd like to know I got a couple names in mind that I
00:26:30.700 --> 00:26:34.680
Yeah, I could probably I won't say it. It shouldn't be that rare
00:26:35.240 --> 00:26:37.900
And yet it is and that's sad
00:26:38.460 --> 00:26:42.700
Yeah, let's do better humans. Yeah, do better. Do better. I love this movie
00:26:42.700 --> 00:26:49.500
I think this movie was a no-nonsense thriller that really punched above its weight class. Like I'm serious. I don't know
00:26:50.120 --> 00:26:52.240
Why this one didn't get more?
00:26:52.240 --> 00:26:56.080
Love from maybe it did I just did maybe I missed it. Maybe I'm
00:26:57.120 --> 00:26:59.540
On the wrong frequency and I didn't see it come out
00:26:59.540 --> 00:27:04.820
But I mean, I think I found it and then had to tell you right and you didn't even know it was off
00:27:04.820 --> 00:27:08.780
Yeah, I didn't realize it was out streaming, but I had remembered watching the trailer
00:27:08.780 --> 00:27:14.560
Yeah, and you you'd been waiting on it, right? Like they didn't something else must have come out on disney and hulu
00:27:15.500 --> 00:27:22.060
Right at the same time because no we can't be all the time. We're we're just two people
00:27:22.060 --> 00:27:24.820
We're just human beings. Yeah
00:27:24.820 --> 00:27:26.800
I gotta say
00:27:26.800 --> 00:27:28.260
final thought that
00:27:28.260 --> 00:27:30.620
in a landscape out there of
00:27:31.720 --> 00:27:34.700
bloated three-hour corporate products
00:27:35.420 --> 00:27:40.880
A movie that knows exactly what it wants to do and executes it with sharp wit and tension is rare
00:27:41.580 --> 00:27:44.860
And that one is right here in front of you as Send Help. I give it
00:27:45.580 --> 00:27:47.920
A must watch you got to watch this go watch it tonight
00:27:47.920 --> 00:27:51.140
It's long but it won't feel long it won't feel long at all
00:27:51.140 --> 00:27:56.500
I watched it in one sitting and I think it is over two hours long and that's rare for me. So
00:27:56.960 --> 00:27:58.960
Yeah, go check this movie out
00:27:59.520 --> 00:28:05.140
