Packers Total Access: BREAKING: Micah Parsons FULLY CLEARED? Packers Just Got Their Best Weapon Back! Here’s When He Plays
It happened. Micah Parsons practiced Wednesday for the first time in almost 11 months, since tearing his ACL and meniscus on Dec. 14 against the Broncos. LaFleur confirmed it, saying “It’s been a long time coming, and he’s put a lot of effort and work into this. To get him back out there will be a big boost to our team.” The Packers also opened his 21-day practice window, which means he has to be activated to the 53-man roster by Nov. 25 or his season is over. On the “fully cleared” question, LaFleur said “I think he’s been cleared to go full-go in regards to what he’s doing out there,” which means he’s cleared for the individual drills he’s doing now, not for games. We break down what it means and when he’s likely to play.
In this complete breakdown, we dive into:
- What “Cleared” Actually Means: Parsons is participating in individual drills to start, and there are conflicting descriptions of whether he’s limited or not limited within them. LaFleur said “we’ll just take it one day at a time, and hopefully he’ll be ready to go sooner rather than later.” Practicing is the first step, and game action is a separate decision the team and medical staff make.
- When He Plays: The most likely scenario is Week 12 at the Rams on Wednesday, Nov. 25, which NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport has reported as the target and which falls at the end of the 21-day window. ESPN’s Rob Demovsky said playing Sunday at New England would be “highly unlikely.” The Packers could activate him earlier if he progresses fast, but the schedule (Patriots on Nov. 8, Vikings on Nov. 15, bye in Week 11, then the Rams) gives them time to ramp him up without rushing.
- The Ramp-Up Plan: He is expected to move from individual drills to team drills as soon as next week if there are no setbacks. Earlier in the season he said he wanted to fix “all the small things” first so that he wouldn’t overcompensate and hurt the other knee, and that same caution is why the process has been slow.
- What He Adds: Parsons had 12.5 sacks in 14 games last year, and the Packers’ sack rate last year was 7.3 percent with him and 3.7 percent without him. This year’s defense leads the league in takeaways and has 15 sacks and eight interceptions in its last five games without him. Adding a four-time All-Pro to that group is the reason this return matters so much.
- The Bottom Line: The Packers got their best defensive player back on the practice field, which is real news. The timeline is still the Rams game on Nov. 25, and as with any player coming back from a dual ACL-and-meniscus tear, the next few weeks of practice will tell us how ready he is.
