00:00:00.160 --> 00:00:07.519
When you listen today, you'll learn five scripts for silencing your inner critic before it kills your confidence and productivity.
00:00:07.519 --> 00:00:19.280
You're listening to Overwhelmed Working Woman, the podcast that helps you be more calm and more productive by doing less.
00:00:19.280 --> 00:00:24.320
I'm your host, Michelle Gauthier, a former Overwhelmed Working Woman and current life coach.
00:00:24.320 --> 00:00:29.359
On this show, we unpack the stress and pressure that today's Working Woman experiences.
00:00:29.359 --> 00:00:36.479
And in each episode, you'll get a strategy to bring more calm, ease, and relaxation to your life.
00:00:36.479 --> 00:00:39.679
Hi, friend.
00:00:39.679 --> 00:00:40.719
Thanks for joining today.
00:00:40.719 --> 00:00:46.240
If you've been listening for a while, you may have heard my advice to give that negative voice in your head a name.
00:00:46.240 --> 00:00:51.759
For some reason, calling it Dolores or Wanda just seems to reiterate that the voice is not you.
00:00:51.759 --> 00:00:56.000
Like, oh, Dolores is telling me that I really should have gotten more done this week.
00:00:56.000 --> 00:00:59.280
And this week I saw a hilarious and brilliant Instagram post.
00:00:59.280 --> 00:01:07.359
I wish I could remember who, so I could give her credit, but the person who posted it had named her mean inner critic voice a man's name.
00:01:07.359 --> 00:01:08.799
Specifically Chad.
00:01:08.799 --> 00:01:12.400
Suck it, Chad, is what she would say back to her inner critic voice.
00:01:12.400 --> 00:01:13.200
I love this.
00:01:13.200 --> 00:01:14.959
It absolutely cracked me up.
00:01:14.959 --> 00:01:21.359
And we all know if you have an inner Chad or whatever you want to name your inner critic that Chad's loud, Chad's rude.
00:01:21.359 --> 00:01:24.799
Chad has been running the show for way longer than you realized.
00:01:24.799 --> 00:01:27.200
So today we're gonna take away Chad's microphone.
00:01:27.200 --> 00:01:28.480
We're not gonna argue with him.
00:01:28.480 --> 00:01:29.680
We're not gonna prove him wrong.
00:01:29.680 --> 00:01:34.239
We're just gonna give him a name and a shrug and open the door to let him out.
00:01:34.239 --> 00:01:43.200
And by the end of this episode, you'll have five actual scripts that you can use the next time Chad or whatever your inner critic's name is decides to chime in.
00:01:43.200 --> 00:01:48.079
When you listen today, you'll learn why arguing back with your inner critic actually keeps you stuck.
00:01:48.079 --> 00:01:58.159
A naming trick that creates instant distance from a thought that used to flatten you, and five scripts that you can start using today in order to or silence that inner critic.
00:01:58.159 --> 00:02:07.280
I think it's human nature if you're going to talk back to your inner critic to argue with a thought or prove it wrong or build a whole case for the defense.
00:02:07.280 --> 00:02:12.319
And here's why I don't love that, because arguing with a thought means you're still having a conversation with it.
00:02:12.319 --> 00:02:15.759
You're giving it a seat at the table and letting it have a chance to speak.
00:02:15.759 --> 00:02:17.360
Here's what I think works better.
00:02:17.360 --> 00:02:23.120
Give the voice a name, whether it's Dolores or Wanda or my new favorite Chad, the name doesn't matter.
00:02:23.120 --> 00:02:25.120
Whatever name really speaks to you.
00:02:25.120 --> 00:02:28.879
And the next time that voice pipes up, you don't argue or defend yourself.
00:02:28.879 --> 00:02:31.039
You just go, thanks for your input, Chad.
00:02:31.039 --> 00:02:33.759
Not up for your advice today, and you move on.
00:02:33.759 --> 00:02:41.280
Envision someone in your actual life, maybe someone who you work with or someone you have known over the years, whose advice you just simply wouldn't listen to.
00:02:41.280 --> 00:02:44.080
Someone whose advice you don't want or need.
00:02:44.080 --> 00:02:46.879
Just imagine if they came up to you and told you to do something.
00:02:46.879 --> 00:02:49.039
You'd just be like, nah, I'm not doing that.
00:02:49.039 --> 00:02:51.680
You don't have to give it any energy or any debate.
00:02:51.680 --> 00:02:56.000
I had a client whose self-talk was so loud that it was almost debilitating.
00:02:56.000 --> 00:03:01.039
First of all, every client I work with has some form of negative self-talk or self-criticism.
00:03:01.039 --> 00:03:02.000
This is human nature.
00:03:02.000 --> 00:03:04.719
If you feel like you're alone in this, you absolutely are not.
00:03:04.719 --> 00:03:11.439
Hers was so loud it was almost debilitating because she would have a thought like, You suck at this, why are you such a loser?
00:03:11.439 --> 00:03:13.120
Why can't you do what other people do?
00:03:13.120 --> 00:03:16.479
Terrible things that she would never say to anyone else.
00:03:16.479 --> 00:03:23.840
And when that happened, her shoulders would actually slump and she felt like she was just defeated before her day even started sometimes.
00:03:23.840 --> 00:03:32.800
And the shift happened during her coaching when she learned to notice that shoulder slump and notice the thought without judging it and then switching it quickly.
00:03:32.800 --> 00:03:38.719
So no arguing, no spiraling about why she thinks it's that way, just notice, name it, and switch it out.
00:03:38.719 --> 00:03:40.719
And now it's quick and it's no big deal.
00:03:40.719 --> 00:03:47.520
And hers is not named Chad, but she can even laugh at the Chad comments that her brain offers her at this point.
00:03:47.520 --> 00:03:54.080
Same brain, same thoughts showing up, but they're just not a problem anymore because she can completely let them go.
00:03:54.080 --> 00:03:58.159
So if you are struggling with this, number one, give your inner critic a name.
00:03:58.159 --> 00:04:03.680
I think personally that it's very useful to come up with a name that kind of makes you chuckle because then it takes you out of the moment.
00:04:03.680 --> 00:04:08.159
Here are five sentences that you can steal starting today.
00:04:08.159 --> 00:04:09.840
I want you to listen to these five.
00:04:09.840 --> 00:04:18.639
I'm just gonna say the name of the inner critic within the thoughts, see which one sticks with you the most that really sticks out to you, and seriously write it down.
00:04:18.639 --> 00:04:22.639
Put it in your notes, in your notes app, email it to yourself, write it on a post-it.
00:04:22.639 --> 00:04:28.959
And next time you notice that shoulder slumping feeling when your inner critic has gotten loud, just try one of these thoughts.
00:04:28.959 --> 00:04:31.680
Number one, oh Chad, I think you forgot.
00:04:31.680 --> 00:04:33.360
Your opinion means nothing to me.
00:04:33.360 --> 00:04:35.120
Oh look, Gladys is back.
00:04:35.120 --> 00:04:35.839
That's so cute.
00:04:35.839 --> 00:04:36.800
Moving on.
00:04:36.800 --> 00:04:41.759
Steve, I'm really busy thinking about how I can solve this, so I'm gonna go ahead and mute you now.
00:04:41.759 --> 00:04:43.120
Not now, Brenda.
00:04:43.120 --> 00:04:45.920
I'm busy solving this, not spiraling about it.
00:04:45.920 --> 00:04:49.279
Reginald, you're loud, but you're not the boss of me.
00:04:49.279 --> 00:04:51.040
You don't even need to use all five.
00:04:51.040 --> 00:04:52.959
Just pick the one that feels most like you.
00:04:52.959 --> 00:04:59.279
Start using it with whatever name you give your inner critic, and next time you catch that voice showing up, give it a try.
00:04:59.279 --> 00:05:07.519
I promise you, if it can make you laugh and remind you that you don't care about that person's opinion, you will be able to much more quickly move on.
00:05:07.519 --> 00:05:10.639
In summary, you don't really have to win an argument with your own brain.
00:05:10.639 --> 00:05:15.040
Just notice the thought, don't give it any air, swap it out, and keep moving.
00:05:15.040 --> 00:05:16.160
That is the skill.
00:05:16.160 --> 00:05:23.839
If this is something that you find yourself suffering from a lot, this negative self-talk inner critic situation, reach out to me.
00:05:23.839 --> 00:05:26.240

This is something that I help all of my clients with.
00:05:29.120 --> 00:05:36.399
And when you can get rid of this negative self-talk, you can save so much time, have such better productivity, and better confidence too.
00:05:36.399 --> 00:05:39.519
There's a link in the show notes to book a free discovery session.
