WEBVTT
00:00:00.210 --> 00:00:02.529
Alright Mr. DeMille, I'm ready for my close -up.
00:00:02.549 --> 00:00:05.650
You are too, didn't you? Outside the frame. 94
00:00:05.650 --> 00:00:11.480
.9 Radio Western. Outside the frame. It's my
00:00:12.560 --> 00:00:42.689
turn! 94 .9 Radio Western, you are tuned into
00:00:42.689 --> 00:00:45.109
Outside the Frame, London's only movie talk show.
00:00:45.149 --> 00:00:47.429
My name's Elijah. I'm Maddie. I'm Mike. I'm Dalton.
00:00:47.570 --> 00:00:49.390
And we are here to talk to you about film and
00:00:49.390 --> 00:00:51.390
the culture that surrounds it. If you'd like
00:00:51.390 --> 00:00:52.990
to take part in the conversation, feel free.
00:00:53.210 --> 00:01:01.250
519 -661 -3600. That is 519 -661 -3600. Guys,
00:01:01.710 --> 00:01:05.609
we have a topic to get to today. But I know that
00:01:05.609 --> 00:01:08.469
there's been some news. that has happened in
00:01:08.469 --> 00:01:11.549
the past week or so. So I wanted to, at the very
00:01:11.549 --> 00:01:13.590
least, kind of get through that a little bit,
00:01:13.590 --> 00:01:15.890
maybe quickly first, because we also have something
00:01:15.890 --> 00:01:19.049
to get into at the end. Looking at you, Dalton.
00:01:19.189 --> 00:01:21.049
You're looking at me. I'm looking at you. So
00:01:21.049 --> 00:01:23.450
the first thing that I wanted to talk about news
00:01:23.450 --> 00:01:25.090
-wise, and probably the only thing, unless anybody
00:01:25.090 --> 00:01:27.689
else has something to chime in, is the new Star
00:01:27.689 --> 00:01:31.670
Wars update. So it was reported that they are
00:01:31.670 --> 00:01:35.069
starting, or I guess restarting. Continuing.
00:01:35.450 --> 00:01:39.049
Yeah. They're continuing the Skywalker saga with
00:01:39.049 --> 00:01:43.269
episode 10. With no Skywalkers. Exactly. Actually.
00:01:43.849 --> 00:01:46.209
I have heard that Daisy Ridley might be in this.
00:01:46.390 --> 00:01:47.650
Yeah, but she's not a Skywalker. Oh, that's right.
00:01:47.730 --> 00:01:49.810
She's not a Skywalker. God, this ninth movie
00:01:49.810 --> 00:01:52.409
is killing me, man. So the tenth one will be...
00:01:52.409 --> 00:01:57.310
Ha, don't care. Holy crap, I don't care. Maddie?
00:01:57.709 --> 00:01:59.989
I'm just like, oh, did Star Wars news come out
00:01:59.989 --> 00:02:01.810
this week? More Star Wars. You know what they
00:02:01.810 --> 00:02:04.489
could do? Don't make any more. Well, that's exactly
00:02:04.489 --> 00:02:07.030
what our point is, I think. I will say, if you
00:02:07.030 --> 00:02:09.050
are to make another Star Wars, I would rather
00:02:09.050 --> 00:02:11.330
it not be Skywalker related. Yeah, correct. Exactly.
00:02:11.389 --> 00:02:13.349
I think they tend to do better when they... try
00:02:13.349 --> 00:02:17.110
new things as of late. I absolutely agree and
00:02:17.110 --> 00:02:20.789
also don't do it. And don't hire John Watts and
00:02:20.789 --> 00:02:23.030
Simon Kinberg to do it. Yeah, and that's kind
00:02:23.030 --> 00:02:25.009
of like the big thing. Don't do any of these
00:02:25.009 --> 00:02:27.490
things. About a year removed from when the news
00:02:27.490 --> 00:02:30.409
dropped that the Soderbergh Adam Driver Star
00:02:30.409 --> 00:02:35.099
Wars movie was shot down. It's just insane. Yeah,
00:02:35.159 --> 00:02:38.240
let's do Sean Levy and John Watts movies. It's
00:02:38.240 --> 00:02:40.560
almost disrespectful. I would rather go spend
00:02:40.560 --> 00:02:44.020
two hours at Guelph's Homecoming than go see
00:02:44.020 --> 00:02:45.719
this movie. Getting pepper sprayed? Yeah, than
00:02:45.719 --> 00:02:49.139
going to see another Star Wars movie. It's getting
00:02:49.139 --> 00:02:51.199
pretty bad. That's the thing. I feel everyone
00:02:51.199 --> 00:02:53.580
feels that way, and they're panicking. Well,
00:02:53.620 --> 00:02:56.479
I mean, look how Mandalorian did. Literally,
00:02:57.319 --> 00:03:00.639
who cared? Literally on planet Earth, name one.
00:03:00.969 --> 00:03:03.569
one real person who cared. But that's what I'm
00:03:03.569 --> 00:03:06.889
saying. It's like we can't shout. Yeah, you saw
00:03:06.889 --> 00:03:09.949
it. Are you the only one here who saw it? I saw
00:03:09.949 --> 00:03:13.490
it and it's reprehensible. It's not a movie.
00:03:13.710 --> 00:03:16.909
We can shout as many times as we want about like,
00:03:16.949 --> 00:03:19.169
hey, give interesting directors the opportunity
00:03:19.169 --> 00:03:21.930
to do this. Put interesting stories into this.
00:03:22.030 --> 00:03:23.909
And every single time, without fault, they'll
00:03:23.909 --> 00:03:25.860
be like... How about the guy who did Free Guy?
00:03:26.120 --> 00:03:28.400
Yeah, exactly. People liked that, right? Yeah,
00:03:28.439 --> 00:03:31.000
that seems like an easy one. I didn't mind Free
00:03:31.000 --> 00:03:36.240
Guy. But also, don't give that guy Star Wars.
00:03:36.400 --> 00:03:38.300
If you're a director with interesting stories,
00:03:38.400 --> 00:03:39.780
I want you to tell the stories you want to tell,
00:03:39.819 --> 00:03:42.259
not shoehorn it backwards into a Star Wars feature.
00:03:42.500 --> 00:03:45.039
But Soderbergh wrote it specifically for... You
00:03:45.039 --> 00:03:47.240
know what I mean? The second one, if you're doing
00:03:47.240 --> 00:03:50.780
Empire Strikes Back... Sure, sure, yeah. But
00:03:50.780 --> 00:03:53.080
we don't know. Maybe a new one could be... Also...
00:03:53.240 --> 00:03:55.979
Nothing will be that, but it's not going to be.
00:03:56.319 --> 00:04:00.240
If you absolutely have to, in a world of like,
00:04:00.319 --> 00:04:04.740
this must happen, just wait, too. Let it breathe.
00:04:04.960 --> 00:04:07.939
Let it calm down. Get someone who can make a
00:04:07.939 --> 00:04:10.340
movie. Look what happened when they waited. Between
00:04:10.340 --> 00:04:16.939
Jedi and Phantom Menace was 16 years. Phantom
00:04:16.939 --> 00:04:21.819
Menace was pretty like, yeah, it made a butt
00:04:21.819 --> 00:04:24.100
-ton of money, but People pretty much hated it
00:04:24.100 --> 00:04:26.879
until, like, five years ago. Yeah, but then retrospectively,
00:04:26.920 --> 00:04:27.740
you know, the longer you wait. And, I mean, it's
00:04:27.740 --> 00:04:29.699
still bad. Like, it's still not good. But you'll
00:04:29.699 --> 00:04:32.060
get the next generation if you wait another generation.
00:04:32.199 --> 00:04:33.839
Yeah, but that's my point. Yeah, they waited
00:04:33.839 --> 00:04:36.399
10 years. They waited a whole six. So, like,
00:04:36.480 --> 00:04:40.370
for me, like, I was the... age for that movie
00:04:40.370 --> 00:04:43.790
I mean I was 13 14 years old so it was like my
00:04:43.790 --> 00:04:46.889
favorite movie yeah because like I mean I didn't
00:04:46.889 --> 00:04:50.230
know about like the stupid Jar Jar Binks stuff
00:04:50.230 --> 00:04:53.850
or like looked at like all the political stuff
00:04:53.850 --> 00:04:56.129
inside the movie that was boring it's like Darth
00:04:56.129 --> 00:04:58.470
Maul's in it I was like Darth Maul is cool and
00:04:58.470 --> 00:05:01.569
that pod racing was really sick that's all I
00:05:01.569 --> 00:05:03.980
remembered from that movie yeah Right? And then,
00:05:04.060 --> 00:05:06.540
but anyways, yeah, you have to wait. Just give
00:05:06.540 --> 00:05:08.120
it a hot minute. Yeah, I think they've been going,
00:05:08.160 --> 00:05:10.899
they put the cast battle down since they like
00:05:10.899 --> 00:05:13.279
acquired it essentially through Disney and they've
00:05:13.279 --> 00:05:16.079
just been floundering since like the past four
00:05:16.079 --> 00:05:18.240
years, five years, it's been. You know, it's
00:05:18.240 --> 00:05:20.620
a great idea. Why don't we do a Star Wars story
00:05:20.620 --> 00:05:23.040
but put Ryan Gosling in it? How about, let's
00:05:23.040 --> 00:05:25.500
do that. I was so hyped for that. And then Sean
00:05:25.500 --> 00:05:28.259
Levy would do it. That's what I'm saying. Probably
00:05:28.259 --> 00:05:33.019
like one of the most evil. filmmakers out there
00:05:33.019 --> 00:05:35.980
Sean Levy yeah like like what would you like
00:05:35.980 --> 00:05:39.620
like he's if Amazon was a person you know I'm
00:05:39.620 --> 00:05:42.500
gonna put you on the spot give me top three like
00:05:42.500 --> 00:05:45.939
evil filmmakers evil filmmakers cause like I
00:05:45.939 --> 00:05:48.379
know I know at least one of them that you will
00:05:48.379 --> 00:05:51.720
that you'll Sean Levy well aside from Sean Levy
00:05:52.860 --> 00:05:56.500
Evil filmmakers. That's a great question. It's
00:05:56.500 --> 00:05:59.360
got to be to their core. Didn't Orson Welles
00:05:59.360 --> 00:06:01.620
call this person out? Wouldn't that be... Oh,
00:06:01.620 --> 00:06:04.699
like Elia Kazan? Yeah, Elia Kazan's evil. Right?
00:06:07.980 --> 00:06:09.920
Who else is like that, though? Because I'm saying,
00:06:09.959 --> 00:06:12.480
like, are we talking about, like, evil? No, no,
00:06:12.480 --> 00:06:17.220
no, just whatever Dalton dictates is evil. I
00:06:17.220 --> 00:06:19.720
would say Christopher Nolan's evil. So you got
00:06:19.720 --> 00:06:26.009
Nolan, Kazan, and Sean Levy. Traders, all of
00:06:26.009 --> 00:06:27.709
them. I'd just like to point out that he did
00:06:27.709 --> 00:06:31.430
not say Polanski or Allen or any of these. Brett
00:06:31.430 --> 00:06:38.230
Ratner. They're evil people, not evil filmmakers.
00:06:38.750 --> 00:06:42.370
Interesting. They don't make evil movies. Yeah,
00:06:42.410 --> 00:06:45.970
I guess some of them do. The sigh of relief that
00:06:45.970 --> 00:06:48.410
Osgood Perkins just... Oh, yeah, he dodged a
00:06:48.410 --> 00:06:51.750
bullet. He's not fully there yet. Or who is...
00:06:51.750 --> 00:06:54.370
Cain Parsons? Cain Parsons. He's not there yet.
00:06:54.490 --> 00:06:55.850
He's so new. Yeah, he's only made one. He's,
00:06:55.910 --> 00:06:57.750
like, controlled by a demon, but he's not, like,
00:06:57.750 --> 00:07:00.389
evil, you know? That's right. Because he goes
00:07:00.389 --> 00:07:04.449
directed, right? Yeah, by Osgood Perkins. You
00:07:04.449 --> 00:07:07.910
know, you could even say, like, it's what I say
00:07:07.910 --> 00:07:10.769
about backrooms. Like, don't even, like... Osgood
00:07:10.769 --> 00:07:12.430
Perkins wouldn't make that list because he's
00:07:12.430 --> 00:07:14.490
not even considered. He's not relevant enough.
00:07:14.689 --> 00:07:16.689
Well, he's not even a director. Yeah, exactly.
00:07:16.949 --> 00:07:17.970
Do you know what I mean? That's what I mean.
00:07:17.990 --> 00:07:22.110
You just dismiss him. It's not even part of the
00:07:22.110 --> 00:07:24.110
conversation. He's not evil, but he's bad, you
00:07:24.110 --> 00:07:26.889
know? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Like, Back Rooms isn't
00:07:26.889 --> 00:07:28.569
a movie. People can say it's good or bad, but
00:07:28.569 --> 00:07:30.310
I don't even consider it a movie. That's how
00:07:30.310 --> 00:07:33.110
low on the total, like, it's not even a movie.
00:07:33.290 --> 00:07:35.430
That's why you don't get upset about it. That's
00:07:35.430 --> 00:07:36.529
right. I don't get upset about it. Yeah, you
00:07:36.529 --> 00:07:39.129
guys got heated. So, Dolphin over here. So, it's
00:07:39.129 --> 00:07:42.490
probably time to get Mike upset. Yeah. We'll
00:07:42.490 --> 00:07:44.490
get there in a second. Oh, yeah, not yet. We're
00:07:44.490 --> 00:07:46.829
going to start. We'll get to my next evil director.
00:07:46.870 --> 00:07:49.839
I'm just kidding. I'm kidding. Yes. See, you
00:07:49.839 --> 00:07:52.040
ought to be doing the transitions. I'm just surprised
00:07:52.040 --> 00:07:54.079
there wasn't a woman on that list, dude. Yeah,
00:07:54.079 --> 00:07:58.899
I know. Women make movies? So do we want to move
00:07:58.899 --> 00:08:03.779
on? Yeah. I was waiting for you to... The next
00:08:03.779 --> 00:08:06.399
evil director. Yes. The director of Resident
00:08:06.399 --> 00:08:08.740
Evil, Zack Kreger. The Resident Evil director.
00:08:09.120 --> 00:08:11.759
That's right. So we saw Resident Evil all together.
00:08:12.060 --> 00:08:17.149
We did a little... It's a good one. It's a good
00:08:17.149 --> 00:08:19.850
one. We did an impromptu field trip. We did.
00:08:19.970 --> 00:08:22.689
We did. Yeah. Yeah. And it wasn't, it wasn't
00:08:22.689 --> 00:08:25.769
like planned for this, the show. Like, like sometimes
00:08:25.769 --> 00:08:28.189
it just, you know, I was going, I was in Highland
00:08:28.189 --> 00:08:31.110
Cinema. I was watching the movie Hope. Check
00:08:31.110 --> 00:08:35.850
it out. It rips. And afterwards, Dalton came
00:08:35.850 --> 00:08:37.570
up to me and said, hey, you want to go see Resident
00:08:37.570 --> 00:08:38.769
Evil? I was like, yeah, sure. He's like, cool.
00:08:38.990 --> 00:08:40.470
Let's go see it. Let's all go see it. Put it
00:08:40.470 --> 00:08:42.289
in a group chat. Let's go see it. And then we
00:08:42.289 --> 00:08:45.730
just went and saw it. Yeah. So we all met up
00:08:45.730 --> 00:08:48.830
at the Silver City and went and saw the new Zack
00:08:48.830 --> 00:08:52.570
Craig film. It was good. It was fine. It was
00:08:52.570 --> 00:08:56.870
fine. So it doesn't even get a fine. It's a motion
00:08:56.870 --> 00:09:00.090
picture. I don't know what it is about his movies.
00:09:00.129 --> 00:09:03.450
I personally do not gel with his humor. So for
00:09:03.450 --> 00:09:04.850
everyone who's like, this movie's hilarious,
00:09:05.070 --> 00:09:07.210
I'm like, I do not find it funny. So I think
00:09:07.210 --> 00:09:09.690
I'm already losing half the battle there. See,
00:09:09.690 --> 00:09:13.330
I didn't find it funny in the... what was clearly
00:09:13.330 --> 00:09:16.610
supposed to be funny. The things that I enjoyed
00:09:16.610 --> 00:09:20.610
or found funny about it was just the gross. Yeah,
00:09:20.669 --> 00:09:23.269
the dark stuff was funny. Just the grossness
00:09:23.269 --> 00:09:27.090
of the creatures and stuff. That makes me happy
00:09:27.090 --> 00:09:30.129
and makes me giggle. So that's what I found.
00:09:30.289 --> 00:09:32.899
But that's not intent. I know what you're saying
00:09:32.899 --> 00:09:36.100
because I'm in the same boat. The ongoing commentary.
00:09:36.100 --> 00:09:39.440
It got a little annoying. If that guy just didn't
00:09:39.440 --> 00:09:41.419
say it, if the lead just didn't say it, it would
00:09:41.419 --> 00:09:42.879
have been better. Or punctuated because there
00:09:42.879 --> 00:09:45.019
was a couple lines where I'm like, those lines
00:09:45.019 --> 00:09:47.159
were okay, but it's when you're talking the entire
00:09:47.159 --> 00:09:49.600
movie when I want it to be tense. I laughed once,
00:09:49.740 --> 00:09:53.259
but I thought it was a pretty good bit when he's
00:09:53.259 --> 00:09:57.759
just like, oh, interesting. Such an odd line
00:09:57.759 --> 00:09:59.299
read that it was funny. Yeah, that it was funny.
00:09:59.340 --> 00:10:02.320
Yeah. That and the bracelet. Yeah, that also
00:10:02.320 --> 00:10:05.299
got me. I like the key bit, too, where he keeps,
00:10:05.419 --> 00:10:07.480
like, trying to shoot. There's so many, like,
00:10:08.200 --> 00:10:10.200
keys and he can't get the right. I thought that
00:10:10.200 --> 00:10:13.620
was a funny bit. Yeah. The padlocks that he always
00:10:13.620 --> 00:10:15.000
comes across. I thought that was interesting,
00:10:15.240 --> 00:10:18.720
too. Yeah. Yeah, it's, if you are in the mood
00:10:18.720 --> 00:10:21.480
for a, I mean, it's 90 minutes flat. It's nice
00:10:21.480 --> 00:10:24.120
and quick. Yeah. There's some gross stuff in
00:10:24.120 --> 00:10:27.490
it, which is awesome. It's not going to change
00:10:27.490 --> 00:10:30.549
your life. No. And I will say I really appreciated
00:10:30.549 --> 00:10:32.669
the lighting in this movie. For a horror movie,
00:10:32.830 --> 00:10:36.210
at least it looked like a movie. It was interesting
00:10:36.210 --> 00:10:39.590
in that sense. And I just think it's just fine.
00:10:39.870 --> 00:10:42.389
And I think a lot of people are really over -hyping
00:10:42.389 --> 00:10:44.820
it. So I'm like, if you enjoyed it, I'm so happy
00:10:44.820 --> 00:10:47.980
for you. I just can't get there with his movies.
00:10:48.000 --> 00:10:50.820
That's exactly how I felt about Weapons. Yeah,
00:10:50.820 --> 00:10:55.019
exactly. It's 100 % fine. But the fact that it
00:10:55.019 --> 00:10:58.480
was in the Oscar conversation, I was like, hey,
00:10:58.519 --> 00:11:01.580
man, maybe we need to slow that roll a little
00:11:01.580 --> 00:11:03.759
bit. The character of Gladys is like an Oscar
00:11:03.759 --> 00:11:06.220
-nominated performance. An Oscar -winning performance.
00:11:06.279 --> 00:11:08.460
Sorry, I meant to say winning. But it's like...
00:11:08.690 --> 00:11:11.470
It's really not interesting at all. It's ridiculous.
00:11:11.850 --> 00:11:14.070
It's not that good of a performance. It's not
00:11:14.070 --> 00:11:16.549
that good of a movie. Which is so... Because
00:11:16.549 --> 00:11:20.320
I'm... I don't know about you guys. I actually
00:11:20.320 --> 00:11:24.279
enjoyed Barbarian, his feature. I like it the
00:11:24.279 --> 00:11:26.019
best. It is still my favorite. It's his best
00:11:26.019 --> 00:11:28.779
movie. I think it is the funniest of his movies,
00:11:28.820 --> 00:11:30.940
and it clearly showcased. I mean, he comes from
00:11:30.940 --> 00:11:32.919
a sketch comedy background, white as kids, you
00:11:32.919 --> 00:11:35.340
know. And I think that one did the best at displaying
00:11:35.340 --> 00:11:39.600
that while also still being quite creepy. I think
00:11:39.600 --> 00:11:43.269
that one had the best blend. Yeah. Whereas, which
00:11:43.269 --> 00:11:46.190
is why I was so disappointed by Weapons and I
00:11:46.190 --> 00:11:49.210
guess to an extent this movie because I was hoping
00:11:49.210 --> 00:11:52.649
he would build on that. And I guess his movie,
00:11:52.710 --> 00:11:55.850
at least Weapons, went a little bit further.
00:11:55.990 --> 00:11:57.830
Like it tried to be a little bit more ambitious.
00:11:57.830 --> 00:11:59.429
Yeah, he took some more risks. But yeah, they
00:11:59.429 --> 00:12:01.850
just didn't really pay off in my personal opinion.
00:12:02.830 --> 00:12:06.070
So I'm just left personally at this place with
00:12:06.070 --> 00:12:09.230
Zack Kreger where it's like. The needle has not
00:12:09.230 --> 00:12:12.129
moved. I will still go to see his next movie,
00:12:12.250 --> 00:12:14.909
but I'm still on the spot where I don't hate
00:12:14.909 --> 00:12:17.190
him, or I don't hate his work any less. I don't
00:12:17.190 --> 00:12:19.629
love his work anymore. He's a great cheap night
00:12:19.629 --> 00:12:23.269
director. You just go, you spend whatever cheap
00:12:23.269 --> 00:12:26.529
night is now, seven bucks or something. Seven
00:12:26.529 --> 00:12:28.889
bucks? I don't know how much it is. To go to
00:12:28.889 --> 00:12:30.590
a movie? I don't know how much cheap night is.
00:12:30.590 --> 00:12:33.309
More like 70 bucks. 8 .50? Maybe you bump it
00:12:33.309 --> 00:12:35.570
up a little. I don't know, but that's not like...
00:12:35.820 --> 00:12:38.919
Sure, I'll give you that for whatever, hour and
00:12:38.919 --> 00:12:43.000
a half. But his issue, and I think Barbarian
00:12:43.000 --> 00:12:45.899
has a really strong opening. Yes. And weapons
00:12:45.899 --> 00:12:47.679
has an interesting concept that he starts with.
00:12:47.799 --> 00:12:50.879
But for me, it's like he doesn't, and he's admitted
00:12:50.879 --> 00:12:52.980
it, that he writes movies without knowing where
00:12:52.980 --> 00:12:54.820
they're going. And you can really feel it in
00:12:54.820 --> 00:12:58.799
his movies. So I think Barbarian has the strongest
00:12:58.799 --> 00:13:02.559
first 30 minutes of any of his movies. And I
00:13:02.559 --> 00:13:06.269
think that makes it. his best movie yeah he also
00:13:06.269 --> 00:13:09.429
has like i think he didn't it wasn't as relying
00:13:09.429 --> 00:13:13.330
it didn't rely sorry on as heavily on uh at least
00:13:13.330 --> 00:13:15.169
according to weapon or compared to weapons like
00:13:15.169 --> 00:13:17.830
star power um and getting them to carry it because
00:13:17.830 --> 00:13:21.470
you have you have some big people uh in or big
00:13:21.470 --> 00:13:24.350
two two relatively big actors and uh bill skarsgard
00:13:24.350 --> 00:13:27.610
and justin long yeah so it's really just getting
00:13:27.610 --> 00:13:30.370
people who are really solid and who can work
00:13:30.370 --> 00:13:32.549
within that material the scarier material and
00:13:32.549 --> 00:13:34.950
justin long's very good at playing in horror
00:13:34.950 --> 00:13:36.769
movies as he has been in the past, and comedy
00:13:36.769 --> 00:13:41.330
movies. And his character in Barbarian is just
00:13:41.330 --> 00:13:44.389
the worst, right? So when you see these things
00:13:44.389 --> 00:13:48.090
happening to him, it's quite justified. So all
00:13:48.090 --> 00:13:51.049
that to say, decent time at the movies. Yeah,
00:13:51.070 --> 00:13:53.190
we had fun. Yeah, and I think it's interesting
00:13:53.190 --> 00:13:55.710
too, now more film directors grew up playing
00:13:55.710 --> 00:13:57.529
video games, and now they're the ones adapting
00:13:57.529 --> 00:13:59.889
video games. So this is not a direct adaptation
00:13:59.889 --> 00:14:02.340
of any Resident Evil, but it... has the feel
00:14:02.340 --> 00:14:04.379
of it for a lot of people. Yes. So I do find
00:14:04.379 --> 00:14:05.720
that interesting. At least we're moving in a
00:14:05.720 --> 00:14:07.919
direction where like video game movies might
00:14:07.919 --> 00:14:10.600
actually just like have a good premise to start
00:14:10.600 --> 00:14:12.159
with and there might be better ones down the
00:14:12.159 --> 00:14:14.720
road. So I'm like, I'm okay with this being like
00:14:14.720 --> 00:14:16.539
the next step forward in where that's going.
00:14:16.700 --> 00:14:19.480
And it did, it was like a, it did have a video
00:14:19.480 --> 00:14:22.980
game feel to it. And I, and some. Anybody might
00:14:22.980 --> 00:14:24.960
hear that phrase and say, well, yeah, it's a
00:14:24.960 --> 00:14:27.879
video game movie. What do you expect? No, a lot
00:14:27.879 --> 00:14:30.340
of video game adaptations, they feel like movies.
00:14:30.419 --> 00:14:32.179
They don't feel like video games. So this one
00:14:32.179 --> 00:14:34.059
kind of felt like that. You get the same sensations.
00:14:34.440 --> 00:14:36.139
You get the same jump scares. You feel like you're
00:14:36.139 --> 00:14:39.019
out of ammo. You have to go from this point to
00:14:39.019 --> 00:14:42.299
that point. You have the wrong lock or the wrong
00:14:42.299 --> 00:14:45.679
key lock. The first person stuff. First person
00:14:45.679 --> 00:14:48.100
stuff. Yeah, so there are really interesting
00:14:48.100 --> 00:14:51.100
things that happen in this movie. It's just...
00:14:51.529 --> 00:14:53.370
I just wanted a little bit more. That's all.
00:14:53.470 --> 00:14:55.110
And maybe that's on me for asking for a little
00:14:55.110 --> 00:14:57.370
bit more from a quick 90 -minute Resident Evil
00:14:57.370 --> 00:15:00.210
film. Yeah. I mean, also, apparently, he cut
00:15:00.210 --> 00:15:02.230
out a ton of the jokes. Like, there was another
00:15:02.230 --> 00:15:04.389
cut. That's insane. That everyone was like, it's
00:15:04.389 --> 00:15:06.909
too comedic. And they cut it back. So I'm just
00:15:06.909 --> 00:15:08.809
like, where were we going originally? The amount
00:15:08.809 --> 00:15:11.509
of times the main character mutters something
00:15:11.509 --> 00:15:14.409
to himself. That was the whole time. If you did
00:15:14.409 --> 00:15:16.889
a quick cut of all of those, it might be a third
00:15:16.889 --> 00:15:20.549
of the movie. It's hefty. He's always talking.
00:15:20.669 --> 00:15:23.190
Yeah. The whole movie. And I like Austin Abrams.
00:15:23.190 --> 00:15:26.149
So do I. I'm very excited for Whale Fall later.
00:15:26.529 --> 00:15:29.909
Yeah, come on. That movie's going to be... Might
00:15:29.909 --> 00:15:32.669
have to be another impromptu field trip. Oh,
00:15:32.690 --> 00:15:36.110
sign me up. Sign me up. You in, Maddie? Whale
00:15:36.110 --> 00:15:38.169
fall? I did Resident Evil. I may as well do whale
00:15:38.169 --> 00:15:40.509
fall. There you go. Come on. You'll enjoy it.
00:15:40.629 --> 00:15:42.490
Someone just getting eaten by a whale? What's
00:15:42.490 --> 00:15:43.870
not to like? Is he going to fight his way out?
00:15:43.970 --> 00:15:46.429
Is it a cool 90 minutes? Probably. Probably.
00:15:46.929 --> 00:15:49.610
Also based on a book, which I'm like, what? Which
00:15:49.610 --> 00:15:52.070
is awesome. What is this movie? Is the book Moby
00:15:52.070 --> 00:15:55.049
Dick? It's called Whale Fall. Let's guess. What's
00:15:55.049 --> 00:15:59.590
the run time? 84 minutes. 84. I'm going to go
00:15:59.590 --> 00:16:05.429
100 minutes. So you're going hour 40? Yeah. I'm
00:16:05.429 --> 00:16:09.870
going to go 96 minutes. It's funny. That was
00:16:09.870 --> 00:16:13.250
my first gut instinct, and I was like, I just
00:16:13.250 --> 00:16:14.529
feel like it's one of those ones that I just
00:16:14.529 --> 00:16:17.590
push it a little too. According to IMDb, it is
00:16:17.590 --> 00:16:23.289
one hour and 46 minutes. Ooh. It's a little long.
00:16:23.549 --> 00:16:25.470
That's a little long. That's a little long. That's
00:16:25.470 --> 00:16:27.370
10 minutes too long. I like my runtime better.
00:16:27.529 --> 00:16:30.730
Yeah. Yeah, I think a cool somewhere around 90.
00:16:30.990 --> 00:16:33.889
95? 96 is the perfect runtime for that movie.
00:16:34.710 --> 00:16:38.970
With credits. It's actually 90. Six minutes to
00:16:38.970 --> 00:16:42.169
set up him getting into the whale, and then 90
00:16:42.169 --> 00:16:43.809
minutes in the whale, and then we're done. Then
00:16:43.809 --> 00:16:47.610
we're out. I agree. Why aren't we in Hollywood
00:16:47.610 --> 00:16:49.789
right now? We should run a studio. We already
00:16:49.789 --> 00:16:52.210
pitched Poor Souls. We got the ball rolling.
00:16:53.830 --> 00:16:55.549
Coming to cinemas in 2027. And that was just
00:16:55.549 --> 00:16:57.850
out of prompts that were pulled out of a hat.
00:16:58.049 --> 00:16:59.789
Imagine what we could do if we just had full
00:16:59.789 --> 00:17:01.190
creative freedom. If we tried it for a long period
00:17:01.190 --> 00:17:02.990
of time. We wouldn't hire any evil directors.
00:17:03.309 --> 00:17:06.569
No, no. What would our production company be
00:17:06.569 --> 00:17:09.490
called? OTF. Yeah, I guess so. I guess it would
00:17:09.490 --> 00:17:12.109
have to be. OTF Pictures? OTF Pictures, yeah.
00:17:12.250 --> 00:17:14.470
Maybe do a pictures? A little pictures? A little
00:17:14.470 --> 00:17:16.809
something? A little classy? Not entertainment.
00:17:17.170 --> 00:17:20.569
No, no, no. Pictures. Pictures. Moving pictures?
00:17:21.180 --> 00:17:23.440
No, just pictures. Just pictures. OTF Pictures?
00:17:23.779 --> 00:17:26.500
Yeah, I like it. Presents? Presents. Yeah, I'm
00:17:26.500 --> 00:17:31.539
okay with that. Poor souls. Poor souls. Starring...
00:17:31.539 --> 00:17:35.660
We never figured that out. Check out Mike's birthday
00:17:35.660 --> 00:17:37.079
episode if you don't know what we're talking
00:17:37.079 --> 00:17:41.220
about. Yeah, yeah. So we saw that movie all together.
00:17:41.319 --> 00:17:42.680
We did not see this next movie that we're going
00:17:42.680 --> 00:17:45.819
to talk about all together. But we saw it individually,
00:17:45.980 --> 00:17:48.599
but we all have seen it. You and I were at the
00:17:48.599 --> 00:17:50.460
same screening. Elijah and I were at the same
00:17:50.460 --> 00:17:53.779
screening. So we had right out the gate reactions
00:17:53.779 --> 00:17:57.059
to it. Yes. I saw it before anybody. Yes, you
00:17:57.059 --> 00:18:01.740
did. And you kept it close to the chest. The
00:18:01.740 --> 00:18:04.740
only thing I did was right before Elijah went
00:18:04.740 --> 00:18:07.000
in, I gave him two thumbs up. Yeah. That's the
00:18:07.000 --> 00:18:08.920
only thing. Not only were they two thumbs up,
00:18:08.980 --> 00:18:11.759
but you were like shaking. You were like shaking
00:18:11.759 --> 00:18:14.819
with them. Trembling. Which is quite funny because
00:18:14.819 --> 00:18:18.299
as you were leaving the theater, Maddie, you
00:18:18.299 --> 00:18:22.299
were also like shaking as well. Yes. Which is
00:18:22.299 --> 00:18:24.660
quite interesting. So, I mean, the next movie
00:18:24.660 --> 00:18:27.440
that I haven't said yet, but the next movie just
00:18:27.440 --> 00:18:29.440
premiered this past Friday or was just released
00:18:29.440 --> 00:18:31.819
this past Friday. Sorry. And it goes by the name
00:18:31.819 --> 00:18:35.039
of Primetime. Now, this movie was directed by
00:18:35.039 --> 00:18:40.170
Lance Oppenheim. who usually dabbles in the documentary
00:18:40.170 --> 00:18:42.390
world. I believe this is his first narrative
00:18:42.390 --> 00:18:45.349
film. It is, yeah. And it stars Robert Pattinson,
00:18:45.529 --> 00:18:49.690
Skylar Gazzando, Merritt Weaver. The kid from
00:18:49.690 --> 00:18:53.470
Jerry McFlyer. Jonathan Lipnicki in quite the
00:18:53.470 --> 00:18:56.450
role. Creed from The Office. That's right. Alex
00:18:56.450 --> 00:18:59.369
Winter. Alex Winter. Yeah, this has quite the
00:18:59.369 --> 00:19:03.119
cast in it. Fergie. Not in the cast, but in the
00:19:03.119 --> 00:19:05.559
soundtrack. Yeah, yeah. Needle drop. An amazing
00:19:05.559 --> 00:19:08.839
needle drop. Great needle drop. And it uses its
00:19:08.839 --> 00:19:11.859
cast very, very effectively in a very clever
00:19:11.859 --> 00:19:16.099
way, I found. But this movie is about, it's about,
00:19:16.380 --> 00:19:20.289
kind of, it's about Chris Hansen and the To Catch
00:19:20.289 --> 00:19:23.369
a Predator show. Primetime Wars. Yep, the Primetime
00:19:23.369 --> 00:19:28.250
Wars that it had in 06. And what led to its eventual
00:19:28.250 --> 00:19:33.210
cancellation. Were you guys aware? I mean, I'm
00:19:33.210 --> 00:19:36.950
sure you were aware, but, like, where was lost
00:19:36.950 --> 00:19:42.390
in your... The show. Where was Lost in your world
00:19:42.390 --> 00:19:45.069
at that particular time? So you guys were, what,
00:19:45.150 --> 00:19:48.230
10 to 12 years old -ish? I was 12, yeah. Yeah.
00:19:48.230 --> 00:19:51.150
Was that part of your world, not part of your
00:19:51.150 --> 00:19:52.450
world? I wasn't watching, but I heard about it
00:19:52.450 --> 00:19:54.549
a lot. It was advertised everywhere. It's definitely
00:19:54.549 --> 00:19:57.109
something that you hear about through TV history,
00:19:57.210 --> 00:19:59.730
in a sense. I watched Lost for the first time,
00:19:59.730 --> 00:20:02.559
like... 10 years ago now a little bit but like
00:20:02.559 --> 00:20:05.220
I do love Lost so like watching this movie I
00:20:05.220 --> 00:20:06.980
was like I understand what is going on here but
00:20:06.980 --> 00:20:09.279
like while it was happening that was not on the
00:20:09.279 --> 00:20:14.579
radar for me yeah it was it was I was in wasn't
00:20:14.579 --> 00:20:17.519
quite in film school I was in first year at Sheridan
00:20:17.519 --> 00:20:22.480
at a certificate program to hopefully get into
00:20:22.480 --> 00:20:27.039
film school and that the Lost hype was like it
00:20:27.039 --> 00:20:30.710
reminded me of like a few years later Maybe not
00:20:30.710 --> 00:20:33.990
to the same degree, but very similarly was the
00:20:33.990 --> 00:20:37.890
Breaking Bad situation. Because Breaking Bad
00:20:37.890 --> 00:20:40.650
wasn't... It was a sleeper hit. It was a sleeper.
00:20:40.650 --> 00:20:43.369
It took a little while. Game of Thrones. Game
00:20:43.369 --> 00:20:46.210
of Thrones, yeah. Game of Thrones was probably
00:20:46.210 --> 00:20:51.549
another one. But it was just... It felt... Like
00:20:51.549 --> 00:20:54.029
the last, even those, because Game of Thrones
00:20:54.029 --> 00:20:57.910
was an HBO show, right? And Breaking Bad was
00:20:57.910 --> 00:21:04.750
AMC, right? But Lost was like ABC. ABC. And it's
00:21:04.750 --> 00:21:06.630
kind of, it's interesting because looking back,
00:21:06.670 --> 00:21:08.829
it's kind of like, I would say one of the last
00:21:08.829 --> 00:21:14.000
like big shows. in the zeitgeist that was like
00:21:14.000 --> 00:21:16.640
network a network show concurrently it was also
00:21:16.640 --> 00:21:18.359
when a bunch of internet forums were popping
00:21:18.359 --> 00:21:20.619
up so people were talking about the show in a
00:21:20.619 --> 00:21:22.640
way that was never done before and it was like
00:21:22.640 --> 00:21:24.920
you go to work the next day everyone watched
00:21:24.920 --> 00:21:29.220
Lost everyone's talking about it and I just remember
00:21:29.220 --> 00:21:35.809
myself and my ex we were like it was just I didn't
00:21:35.809 --> 00:21:39.190
really do much for me personally, but I watched
00:21:39.190 --> 00:21:43.289
it, especially the first couple of seasons. And
00:21:43.289 --> 00:21:45.670
yeah, it was just, it was a really big deal.
00:21:45.730 --> 00:21:48.190
Like it was a really, really, really big deal.
00:21:48.869 --> 00:21:52.150
Yeah. That I, I, one of the things and why I
00:21:52.150 --> 00:21:55.470
guess why I asked that is like that. I love,
00:21:55.490 --> 00:21:58.710
I love, and it's becoming a little bit more prevalent
00:21:58.710 --> 00:22:01.089
now and, and because of the kind of filmmakers
00:22:01.089 --> 00:22:04.359
that are making movies, but. Those early 2000s,
00:22:04.359 --> 00:22:07.460
they are kind of creeping into movies now because
00:22:07.460 --> 00:22:10.940
now it's 20 years ago. Yeah, nostalgia. And it's
00:22:10.940 --> 00:22:13.559
like, which is interesting, it's nostalgia. And
00:22:13.559 --> 00:22:16.880
it's kind of, for me, like, because it is my
00:22:16.880 --> 00:22:19.680
generation that is, and slightly younger, I guess
00:22:19.680 --> 00:22:22.339
Oppenheim, I think is 30 -something or 30. Yeah.
00:22:23.220 --> 00:22:26.900
That sort of 10 -year span is like, I can, that
00:22:26.900 --> 00:22:30.069
nostalgia is like, I was a person. The 90s, I
00:22:30.069 --> 00:22:32.329
mean, yeah, of course I remember the 90s. But
00:22:32.329 --> 00:22:35.470
I wasn't, like, that's, like, I wasn't a person.
00:22:35.789 --> 00:22:37.769
Like, I was, like, fucking, you know what I mean?
00:22:37.910 --> 00:22:42.069
Like, I just, I don't know. So this is a really
00:22:42.069 --> 00:22:45.490
interesting period of time, I think, because
00:22:45.490 --> 00:22:47.589
there's a bunch of movies that are coming out
00:22:47.589 --> 00:22:49.789
that are, like, post, basically, essentially
00:22:49.789 --> 00:22:53.130
post -high school. Sure. For me, anyway. So,
00:22:53.230 --> 00:22:55.869
like, 06, I was. Post high school. And then,
00:22:55.910 --> 00:22:59.069
so your nostalgia, the things that you remember
00:22:59.069 --> 00:23:01.970
are almost like those things like the Fergie
00:23:01.970 --> 00:23:04.650
drop. Yeah. They're like, that just takes you
00:23:04.650 --> 00:23:09.289
back to a very specific time and place where
00:23:09.289 --> 00:23:13.069
you're like, oh, I remember exactly what. I was
00:23:13.069 --> 00:23:15.930
doing, what was happening. Well, the filmmakers
00:23:15.930 --> 00:23:18.990
now are of the age where they're trying to make
00:23:18.990 --> 00:23:22.970
movies about what they were subjected to, good
00:23:22.970 --> 00:23:26.349
or bad, back in the Y2K, just getting out of
00:23:26.349 --> 00:23:28.750
the Y2K era, right? Can we piggyback off this
00:23:28.750 --> 00:23:30.990
a little bit then? Sure. What were people, did
00:23:30.990 --> 00:23:33.670
you watch To Catch a Predator? Was that something
00:23:33.670 --> 00:23:36.390
that people went into the movie knowing a lot
00:23:36.390 --> 00:23:39.349
about? Well, from my memory, and I could be wrong,
00:23:39.410 --> 00:23:42.380
and maybe you can look this up. Sure. When did
00:23:42.380 --> 00:23:45.220
To Catch a Predator start? It was like 05, I
00:23:45.220 --> 00:23:48.759
think. I think it was 05. Or 06. 06, I think.
00:23:48.839 --> 00:23:51.079
It was around like 2005, 2007. Well, 06 is when
00:23:51.079 --> 00:23:53.720
this takes place. Yeah. So they weren't fighting
00:23:53.720 --> 00:23:55.619
for primetime right away. It started in November
00:23:55.619 --> 00:24:00.130
of 2004. Right. And ended in December of 2007.
00:24:00.650 --> 00:24:05.630
2007, yeah. Because where this is, and you kind
00:24:05.630 --> 00:24:08.589
of get that from the movie, that the setup has
00:24:08.589 --> 00:24:12.390
existed, but they're riding this wave. Because
00:24:12.390 --> 00:24:15.549
people like it. That's right. So to answer your
00:24:15.549 --> 00:24:17.589
question for me personally, absolutely, yeah.
00:24:17.690 --> 00:24:23.250
The amount of ads that you saw on syndicated
00:24:23.250 --> 00:24:27.089
television of the next episode and how they would...
00:24:27.440 --> 00:24:30.180
like try to rope you in to watch the next episode.
00:24:30.640 --> 00:24:35.859
The tease is, it was very similar. So there was
00:24:35.859 --> 00:24:38.640
another show, and this is a weird comparison,
00:24:38.799 --> 00:24:41.559
and I just thought of it right now, but it 100
00:24:41.559 --> 00:24:45.019
% is because of the teasers, the way that To
00:24:45.019 --> 00:24:47.700
Catch a Predator would tease you. And the reason
00:24:47.700 --> 00:24:50.400
really why you were watching the show, and they
00:24:50.400 --> 00:24:54.019
get to it in the movie, was what guys were showing
00:24:54.019 --> 00:24:57.109
up and how crazy it was. There was a show that
00:24:57.109 --> 00:25:01.170
came out just before To Catch a Predator that
00:25:01.329 --> 00:25:04.509
is not To Catch a Predator, but was one of the,
00:25:04.549 --> 00:25:06.430
if not the biggest show on television called
00:25:06.430 --> 00:25:10.549
American Idol. And the first couple seasons of
00:25:10.549 --> 00:25:13.049
American Idol, you watched it the same way. You
00:25:13.049 --> 00:25:15.940
weren't watching it. to see who won necessarily.
00:25:16.079 --> 00:25:18.559
That happened way down the line. Those first
00:25:18.559 --> 00:25:21.759
episodes? Oh, yeah. The auditions? It was all
00:25:21.759 --> 00:25:24.660
about the auditions, especially in those early...
00:25:24.660 --> 00:25:28.140
Because essentially, they definitely... It was
00:25:28.140 --> 00:25:32.700
around season, I want to say, five or six that
00:25:32.700 --> 00:25:37.759
the show started to pivot. But because you essentially
00:25:37.759 --> 00:25:42.420
couldn't just openly mock... They were mean in
00:25:42.420 --> 00:25:44.880
the first couple seasons. We'll say mentally
00:25:44.880 --> 00:25:50.279
impaired people. They would choose people that
00:25:50.279 --> 00:25:53.519
were obviously... Just exploit them. Just exploit
00:25:53.519 --> 00:25:57.720
them and openly mock and make fun of them. And
00:25:57.720 --> 00:26:00.099
knowing that the audience was doing the same
00:26:00.099 --> 00:26:02.039
thing. It was funny. I was thinking about She
00:26:02.039 --> 00:26:04.039
Bangs the other day. I was just thinking about
00:26:04.039 --> 00:26:07.559
that the other day. William. Yeah, of course.
00:26:08.059 --> 00:26:12.380
Anyways. But this was part of, to catch a predator
00:26:12.380 --> 00:26:14.880
is exactly, this is the same era. I believe the
00:26:14.880 --> 00:26:17.619
first American Idol was, I want to say, 01 or
00:26:17.619 --> 00:26:20.319
02. Sure, yeah. So it's right around the same
00:26:20.319 --> 00:26:23.279
era. But the interesting point to build onto
00:26:23.279 --> 00:26:24.460
what you were saying. That's why you were watching
00:26:24.460 --> 00:26:26.380
them. Yeah, and to build onto what you were saying,
00:26:26.519 --> 00:26:30.140
people eventually, American Idol got to the point
00:26:30.140 --> 00:26:31.500
where they were like, well, we can't just openly
00:26:31.500 --> 00:26:33.660
mock these people. But then a show came along.
00:26:34.170 --> 00:26:36.670
where he was almost encouraged to openly mock
00:26:36.670 --> 00:26:38.630
the people that they were bringing in, which
00:26:38.630 --> 00:26:40.650
was to catch a predator. Yes. To feel superior
00:26:40.650 --> 00:26:42.809
to the people you see on TV. To feel superior,
00:26:42.849 --> 00:26:45.569
but also you're like, well, this person's here
00:26:45.569 --> 00:26:49.509
for nefarious reasons. Therefore, it's okay to
00:26:49.509 --> 00:26:52.470
essentially do whatever you want. Shame them,
00:26:52.509 --> 00:26:54.849
probably. Shame them, whatever. Which, nuts.
00:26:55.380 --> 00:26:57.980
I would not say it was good or bad. Just saying
00:26:57.980 --> 00:27:01.019
that that was why the show succeeded. And those
00:27:01.019 --> 00:27:04.700
were part of those teasers. So for me, definitely,
00:27:05.019 --> 00:27:08.079
I don't remember necessarily watching a full
00:27:08.079 --> 00:27:12.220
episode probably until... maybe around 05 or
00:27:12.220 --> 00:27:14.940
06 when it started to get bigger. But I remember
00:27:14.940 --> 00:27:18.019
distinctly seeing those ads and seeing those
00:27:18.019 --> 00:27:22.339
stingers on television that would be like, hey,
00:27:22.460 --> 00:27:25.940
check out this crazy guy. I used to go to my
00:27:25.940 --> 00:27:28.059
friend's house and his dad would never miss an
00:27:28.059 --> 00:27:31.019
episode. And it was like, we would sit down and
00:27:31.019 --> 00:27:34.839
we would watch it. And the things I remember
00:27:34.839 --> 00:27:37.259
most distinctly was at the end of the episode.
00:27:37.700 --> 00:27:40.259
is when he was like, next week, this is who we
00:27:40.259 --> 00:27:42.480
have. And then you're like, well, I gotta watch
00:27:42.480 --> 00:27:44.900
next week. Yeah. Did he sit you down to watch
00:27:44.900 --> 00:27:48.920
it? Like, it was like, wake you up out of bed.
00:27:49.079 --> 00:27:51.359
It was usually on. Like if I was at my friends,
00:27:51.380 --> 00:27:52.880
we had dinner or whatever. Sure. It's usually
00:27:52.880 --> 00:27:55.500
on after dinner. We would go, or it's like once
00:27:55.500 --> 00:27:57.799
it got dark, kind of. Yeah. So we'd come back
00:27:57.799 --> 00:27:59.880
in and we just like hang out in the living room
00:27:59.880 --> 00:28:02.779
and his dad would be watching to catch a predator.
00:28:02.839 --> 00:28:06.099
That's interesting. Yeah. I, I kind of I was
00:28:06.099 --> 00:28:09.259
aware of it. I was aware of it around the time
00:28:09.259 --> 00:28:12.799
and I'd watch like the occasional one. And I
00:28:12.799 --> 00:28:16.660
always I it was always in like in the zeitgeist.
00:28:16.660 --> 00:28:18.519
So I kind of knew of it, but I never really paid
00:28:18.519 --> 00:28:21.000
attention to it too much. It wasn't until COVID
00:28:21.000 --> 00:28:23.660
hit that I just ran through everything I could
00:28:23.660 --> 00:28:26.079
find on YouTube about the show and just kept
00:28:26.079 --> 00:28:28.599
going and just watched all of them for that very
00:28:28.599 --> 00:28:31.470
reason. You're just like who like. That's crazy
00:28:31.470 --> 00:28:34.109
that they find all these people and these characters
00:28:34.109 --> 00:28:36.130
that they essentially, these caricatures, really,
00:28:36.269 --> 00:28:40.289
of these people, right? So we do have to cut
00:28:40.289 --> 00:28:42.450
to a commercial break quickly. So we're going
00:28:42.450 --> 00:28:44.569
to jump into this movie after we come back from
00:28:44.569 --> 00:28:49.519
the break. But one word, one word. Did you like
00:28:49.519 --> 00:28:53.640
Primetime? Maddie? Yes. Best movie of the year
00:28:53.640 --> 00:28:54.880
so far. Not one word. It's not one word, but
00:28:54.880 --> 00:29:01.829
that's okay. I said it quick. Okay. Okay. Mine
00:29:01.829 --> 00:29:04.829
is a resounding yes, but we will get into our
00:29:04.829 --> 00:29:06.809
thoughts after the commercial break. Don't go
00:29:06.809 --> 00:29:08.269
anywhere. You're still listening to Outside the
00:29:08.269 --> 00:29:18.579
Frame, London's only movie talk show. 94 .9 Radio
00:29:18.579 --> 00:29:20.960
Western. You are still tuned in to Outside the
00:29:20.960 --> 00:29:23.440
Frame, London's only movie talk show. We are
00:29:23.440 --> 00:29:25.740
in the midst of talking about our thoughts and
00:29:25.740 --> 00:29:29.839
our feelings on the motion picture Primetime
00:29:29.839 --> 00:29:33.059
that just came out, directed by Lance Oppenheim,
00:29:33.099 --> 00:29:36.319
starring Robert Pattinson as Chris Hansen during
00:29:36.319 --> 00:29:40.289
the... height and the prime of To Catch Predator,
00:29:40.410 --> 00:29:44.450
the television show from the mid to late 2000s.
00:29:45.210 --> 00:29:50.240
Before we jump in, just a programming note. Two
00:29:50.240 --> 00:29:53.259
programming notes. Number one, because we didn't
00:29:53.259 --> 00:29:55.500
say it off the top, there is trivia in October.
00:29:55.839 --> 00:29:58.579
There is, yes. It's October 20th, and it's at
00:29:58.579 --> 00:30:01.240
Holy Diver, 8 p .m. to 10 p .m. Secret film the
00:30:01.240 --> 00:30:03.480
week before. Secret film the week before. Yep.
00:30:04.099 --> 00:30:07.650
Also, just as a note, If you're listening to
00:30:07.650 --> 00:30:10.950
this. The last two Trivias, it's been standing
00:30:10.950 --> 00:30:13.009
room only. That's right. So if you show up at
00:30:13.009 --> 00:30:18.130
5 to 8, okay? I'm just going by the last two
00:30:18.130 --> 00:30:20.809
months. Yep. There's a good chance you're not
00:30:20.809 --> 00:30:23.730
sitting down. That's right. So maybe just think
00:30:23.730 --> 00:30:25.349
of it. If you want to come out, we're going to
00:30:25.349 --> 00:30:27.369
have great prizes, all that stuff. It's going
00:30:27.369 --> 00:30:29.289
to be a lot of fun. But anyways, October 20th.
00:30:30.069 --> 00:30:33.069
Also. I'm just doing this on air, but are we
00:30:33.069 --> 00:30:34.710
doing... Yeah, why don't you talk to them? Okay,
00:30:34.809 --> 00:30:36.329
we talked about... So we're going to spend, just
00:30:36.329 --> 00:30:38.049
for the listener, we're going to spend the last
00:30:38.049 --> 00:30:40.869
sort of five -ish minutes talking about the following
00:30:40.869 --> 00:30:44.049
week's episode, which is Dalton's birthday episode.
00:30:44.150 --> 00:30:46.950
So we're going to set that up, which is going
00:30:46.950 --> 00:30:49.349
to be a lot of fun, and I can't wait to figure
00:30:49.349 --> 00:30:53.269
all that out. So that being said, we have about...
00:30:54.369 --> 00:30:57.809
22 -ish minutes to cook on this movie. Yes, which
00:30:57.809 --> 00:30:59.829
I know is going to be very difficult for you,
00:30:59.910 --> 00:31:01.269
Mike, because I know you've got a lot of thoughts
00:31:01.269 --> 00:31:03.769
and feelings about this. I think we all do, though.
00:31:03.769 --> 00:31:06.349
I think we all do. We do. Seeing Maddie coming
00:31:06.349 --> 00:31:08.650
out of the screening at the Highland, I was like,
00:31:08.730 --> 00:31:12.549
oh, man. Maddie was vibing. I was. Buzzing coming
00:31:12.549 --> 00:31:14.910
out of there. I have another Maddie title for
00:31:14.910 --> 00:31:24.950
this one. It was Primo Timo. I want to follow
00:31:24.950 --> 00:31:28.150
up. I didn't quite say before. I had never seen
00:31:28.150 --> 00:31:30.349
an episode of to catch a predator. I know who
00:31:30.349 --> 00:31:32.190
Chris Hansen is through the zeitgeist. Kind of
00:31:32.190 --> 00:31:34.130
like what Elijah was saying before I went into
00:31:34.130 --> 00:31:38.190
this knowing one trailer. I was just like, I
00:31:38.190 --> 00:31:41.390
was saying vibrating for this movie. Like let's
00:31:41.390 --> 00:31:43.809
put aside the story just for a second. The filmmaking
00:31:43.809 --> 00:31:48.609
alone. I was so enthralled by. Agreed. It's so
00:31:48.609 --> 00:31:51.789
well done, but it's also interesting and trying
00:31:51.789 --> 00:31:54.529
new things and utilizing different forms of filmmaking.
00:31:54.750 --> 00:31:56.569
There's a lot of documentary flourishes that
00:31:56.569 --> 00:31:58.170
he's doing. There's a lot of interesting lighting
00:31:58.170 --> 00:32:00.289
choices he's making, like experimental things.
00:32:00.430 --> 00:32:03.990
Shot choices, too. Really, really enjoyed that
00:32:03.990 --> 00:32:08.490
it wasn't shot in your standard. I just love
00:32:08.490 --> 00:32:11.509
the first... five, ten minutes of the movie.
00:32:11.589 --> 00:32:14.829
It's like these great cinematic close -ups and
00:32:14.829 --> 00:32:19.069
you see Creed, you know, and like that whole
00:32:19.069 --> 00:32:21.829
scene in the airplane is just shot so perfectly
00:32:21.829 --> 00:32:26.329
and I love, it's like someone, and it's one of
00:32:26.329 --> 00:32:29.349
the reasons why I love this movie too. It's like
00:32:29.349 --> 00:32:32.369
someone cared. Yeah, it's not your basic set
00:32:32.369 --> 00:32:34.210
down camera on a tripod. Like there's intention
00:32:34.210 --> 00:32:36.869
behind everything that's shot, but it's also
00:32:36.869 --> 00:32:39.150
just in a way that's exciting, but also in a
00:32:39.150 --> 00:32:41.519
way that's like, This movie made me feel a whole
00:32:41.519 --> 00:32:44.259
range of emotions. I was uncomfortable. I was
00:32:44.259 --> 00:32:47.119
laughing. And I kept like I kept like grabbing
00:32:47.119 --> 00:32:49.960
my face while it was happening because I just
00:32:49.960 --> 00:32:52.819
like was in awe of what I was seeing. Yeah, because
00:32:52.819 --> 00:32:55.559
people don't take swings and sometimes it lands
00:32:55.559 --> 00:32:57.819
and sometimes it doesn't. But I appreciate that
00:32:57.819 --> 00:33:00.279
this one landed for me. Yeah, sure. The opening,
00:33:00.380 --> 00:33:05.130
the introduction to. At least the Chris Hansen
00:33:05.130 --> 00:33:07.269
that we see on To Catch a Predator is just...
00:33:07.269 --> 00:33:11.410
It starts from this shot that is shot so below
00:33:11.410 --> 00:33:14.130
him as he appears at the top of the stairs. And
00:33:14.130 --> 00:33:16.549
quite literally almost puts him on this pedestal.
00:33:16.650 --> 00:33:20.529
Or a hero shot. Yes. As one might say. And moves
00:33:20.529 --> 00:33:22.829
slowly down as it follows him. That leads into
00:33:22.829 --> 00:33:26.769
the very, like you said, the cinematic close
00:33:26.769 --> 00:33:29.150
-up of him as he announces his name to the camera.
00:33:29.329 --> 00:33:33.079
Yeah. Just... Unbelievable stuff. From the first
00:33:33.079 --> 00:33:36.640
five to ten minutes, we know that we're off to
00:33:36.640 --> 00:33:39.339
a great start. There was two indicators to me
00:33:39.339 --> 00:33:44.119
that I was like, okay, I'm on board. Let's see
00:33:44.119 --> 00:33:48.039
where this train's going. Number one was I love
00:33:48.039 --> 00:33:50.500
the fact that a good portion of the trailer was
00:33:50.500 --> 00:33:53.460
in the first five minutes of the movie. I'm like,
00:33:53.500 --> 00:33:55.960
that means there was a lot of meat on the bones
00:33:55.960 --> 00:33:58.420
and they weren't going to show you everything.
00:33:59.319 --> 00:34:02.819
So they had enough. to show you, hey, this is
00:34:02.819 --> 00:34:04.440
what the movie is and we're going to hook you
00:34:04.440 --> 00:34:08.760
in. But there's so much more to the film than,
00:34:08.820 --> 00:34:10.960
like, they didn't show you the entire movie.
00:34:10.980 --> 00:34:15.219
Yeah, yeah. And the Fergie drop. Yes. Now, I'm
00:34:15.219 --> 00:34:18.820
not saying that I'm a Fergie fan, but what that
00:34:18.820 --> 00:34:23.500
indicates to me is that someone that's involved,
00:34:24.110 --> 00:34:28.590
Lance in this particular case, has his finger
00:34:28.590 --> 00:34:32.909
on something. Yeah. And that's what that indicated
00:34:32.909 --> 00:34:36.289
to me. It's like, okay, this is what we're doing.
00:34:36.469 --> 00:34:38.710
He's got his finger on the pulse. Yeah, it's
00:34:38.710 --> 00:34:40.309
a sick song. It just keeps its finger on the
00:34:40.309 --> 00:34:41.510
pulse of that time and era. It's one of the most
00:34:41.510 --> 00:34:44.429
annoying things. It's like a mosquito. However,
00:34:44.670 --> 00:34:49.389
that mosquito brings, like you say, I know exactly,
00:34:49.650 --> 00:34:52.329
I know the clothes that were being worn. I know
00:34:52.329 --> 00:34:55.590
where I was. And like I said, to me, it indicates
00:34:55.590 --> 00:34:58.530
a filmmaker that is putting the audience in a
00:34:58.530 --> 00:35:01.090
very particular... That's right. Like he could
00:35:01.090 --> 00:35:03.809
have chosen a lot of different songs, but that
00:35:03.809 --> 00:35:08.090
one really indicates something to me. And so
00:35:08.090 --> 00:35:11.230
those are the two early indicators for me that
00:35:11.230 --> 00:35:14.150
I was like, okay. Yeah. And I like, obviously
00:35:14.150 --> 00:35:15.929
we'll talk about the acting, but I just want
00:35:15.929 --> 00:35:17.949
to say like, I do not know Chris Hansen, the
00:35:17.949 --> 00:35:21.369
person, but I understood Chris Hansen, the character.
00:35:21.369 --> 00:35:23.489
I don't know him either. That Rob Patterson was
00:35:23.489 --> 00:35:25.889
playing though. I understood the character he
00:35:25.889 --> 00:35:28.030
was playing in the movie. Yes. And it worked
00:35:28.030 --> 00:35:30.369
for me. Because I have heard there are people
00:35:30.369 --> 00:35:33.130
that are having different perspectives on how
00:35:33.130 --> 00:35:35.269
the movie is or how they treat certain story
00:35:35.269 --> 00:35:37.130
beats in it. So I think me having a bit of an
00:35:37.130 --> 00:35:39.769
outsider perspective on it made me just see the
00:35:39.769 --> 00:35:42.170
movie as the movie and not bring in some other
00:35:42.170 --> 00:35:45.590
things into it. I do want to open the table because
00:35:45.590 --> 00:35:48.909
somebody does have some opinions as well. which
00:35:48.909 --> 00:35:51.250
you were very much allowed to discuss. Oh, is
00:35:51.250 --> 00:35:54.869
he? I'm not worried about it. Dalton, if you
00:35:54.869 --> 00:35:57.389
wanted to say some stuff. The floor is yours.
00:35:57.869 --> 00:36:03.449
If you want to say some stuff. I had a much different
00:36:03.449 --> 00:36:08.710
reaction than the three of you. This movie didn't
00:36:08.710 --> 00:36:12.510
really do much for me. When it ended, I just
00:36:12.510 --> 00:36:15.929
kind of sat there. I was sitting there thinking
00:36:15.929 --> 00:36:23.679
about it. And then my coworker at the Highland,
00:36:23.719 --> 00:36:25.960
Ronan, came up to me. He goes, so how was it?
00:36:25.980 --> 00:36:29.559
And I just went, I don't know. I don't know.
00:36:29.679 --> 00:36:32.880
And I've had this. It's not like I outwardly
00:36:32.880 --> 00:36:39.119
detested this movie. I had a good time. Pattinson's
00:36:39.119 --> 00:36:44.610
doing weird stuff. I love it. The filmmaking
00:36:44.610 --> 00:36:48.250
is absolutely like. technical incredible right
00:36:48.250 --> 00:36:54.889
um but i am first and foremost most times a story
00:36:54.889 --> 00:37:00.510
person and for this one i felt it was there was
00:37:00.510 --> 00:37:06.070
a lot of flaws for me that made me feel conflicted
00:37:06.070 --> 00:37:07.710
about a lot of things in the movie where i can
00:37:07.710 --> 00:37:11.929
and i've i've talked to mike and maddie and a
00:37:11.929 --> 00:37:13.849
bunch of people on the internet who who are not
00:37:13.849 --> 00:37:16.909
not happy with my my opinions on this movie but
00:37:16.909 --> 00:37:19.539
i I was happy with your opinions because I think
00:37:19.539 --> 00:37:21.519
they're, I think they're a hundred percent valid
00:37:21.519 --> 00:37:24.769
in the sense of like, in the sense that your
00:37:24.769 --> 00:37:27.289
critiques, I don't think are incorrect. Like
00:37:27.289 --> 00:37:29.289
they're, they're not, they're not coming from
00:37:29.289 --> 00:37:32.849
like left field or like some other, other like
00:37:32.849 --> 00:37:35.070
weird place or whatever. I keep finding myself,
00:37:35.150 --> 00:37:40.139
I do this because when I left the movie, I felt
00:37:40.139 --> 00:37:43.719
unsatisfied was the word I use. And I said, I
00:37:43.719 --> 00:37:48.300
don't know why. And I started to, like peel it
00:37:48.300 --> 00:37:50.820
apart and look for what was it that didn't grab
00:37:50.820 --> 00:37:53.539
me or what was it that I felt like I didn't get
00:37:53.539 --> 00:37:56.800
out of that movie which has made me start to
00:37:56.800 --> 00:38:00.059
do a form of film criticism that I hate so I'm
00:38:00.059 --> 00:38:03.679
like I'm contradicting my normal self which is
00:38:03.679 --> 00:38:06.360
I started judging the movie for what it isn't
00:38:06.360 --> 00:38:11.300
rather than what it is right and I but I keep
00:38:11.300 --> 00:38:13.199
catching myself doing that and I'm saying it's
00:38:13.199 --> 00:38:16.460
because I think I'm going what wasn't there that
00:38:16.460 --> 00:38:20.659
I feel like I didn't get, you know? So I'm trying
00:38:20.659 --> 00:38:22.659
to, like, avoid doing that, where I go, like,
00:38:22.739 --> 00:38:24.760
well, I wished it did this. I wished it did this.
00:38:24.880 --> 00:38:27.239
Well, one of the things that, I mean, we spoke
00:38:27.239 --> 00:38:29.119
briefly about it when we were talking about it,
00:38:29.139 --> 00:38:35.309
but, like, I guess for me, what my reading on
00:38:35.309 --> 00:38:38.309
the film, and I guess why I didn't feel that,
00:38:38.369 --> 00:38:42.900
I felt actually... So I love like this movie
00:38:42.900 --> 00:38:46.559
is perfectly bookended and I love the way that
00:38:46.559 --> 00:38:50.739
that the story plays out because I didn't really
00:38:50.739 --> 00:38:53.960
look at and maybe it was just me or just my mindset
00:38:53.960 --> 00:38:57.440
or whatever. But I think what. the movie was
00:38:57.440 --> 00:38:59.840
informing me is that this movie is not really
00:38:59.840 --> 00:39:03.460
about Chris Hansen. And the, the character that
00:39:03.460 --> 00:39:06.460
I followed or that I identified with was actually,
00:39:06.519 --> 00:39:12.360
um, the decoy Dan. And, and because that's the
00:39:12.360 --> 00:39:16.099
character that has the, the, the ups and the
00:39:16.099 --> 00:39:18.400
downs and, and, and a journey that you can follow.
00:39:18.539 --> 00:39:22.449
Not to say that. that Chris doesn't, Chris Hansen's
00:39:22.449 --> 00:39:24.769
character doesn't, but it's, it's, they're working
00:39:24.769 --> 00:39:28.110
in tandem. And if you look at the, again, the
00:39:28.110 --> 00:39:32.469
way, if, if you just focused on, on, on Pattinson's
00:39:32.469 --> 00:39:36.090
care, like on the characters, like his, his arc,
00:39:36.269 --> 00:39:40.599
I could, I can absolutely like agree with you
00:39:40.599 --> 00:39:44.639
in, in some respects. But to me, like the, the
00:39:44.639 --> 00:39:47.699
movie essentially kicks off. I mean, aside from
00:39:47.699 --> 00:39:51.449
like literally the, I mean, you can call it a,
00:39:51.469 --> 00:39:53.469
I don't know what you want to call the opening
00:39:53.469 --> 00:39:56.570
of that movie, but the setup or whatever. But
00:39:56.570 --> 00:39:59.550
really, it's the audition that really is where
00:39:59.550 --> 00:40:02.349
the movie starts. Where the movie ends before
00:40:02.349 --> 00:40:06.230
the denouement is, again, Decoy Dan's story,
00:40:06.389 --> 00:40:10.369
right? And those two moments are perfect. Well,
00:40:10.369 --> 00:40:14.349
even the denouement is. Is his, yes. But those
00:40:14.349 --> 00:40:18.570
two moments are perfectly bookended with the
00:40:18.570 --> 00:40:23.530
use of the red song. And so to me, I guess that's
00:40:23.530 --> 00:40:25.329
the way that I looked at it. That's all I'm saying
00:40:25.329 --> 00:40:27.750
is that for me, I looked at it that way. I viewed
00:40:27.750 --> 00:40:30.329
a lot of the same things you did. To me, that
00:40:30.329 --> 00:40:33.190
was, I mean, he's the best part of that movie
00:40:33.190 --> 00:40:36.329
in my opinion. He's fantastic. He's really good.
00:40:36.449 --> 00:40:39.829
Everyone is strong in this movie. There's not
00:40:39.829 --> 00:40:41.530
a single weak performance in this movie. They're
00:40:41.530 --> 00:40:44.829
making big choices. And it could have like, I'll
00:40:44.829 --> 00:40:47.469
say this. It could have went really wrong. Yeah.
00:40:47.510 --> 00:40:50.590
Like really wrong. And if it wasn't Pattinson,
00:40:50.730 --> 00:40:53.590
if it was like, it could have been just an hour,
00:40:53.630 --> 00:40:57.590
48 minute, like SNL caricature. Yeah. Yeah. Right.
00:40:57.769 --> 00:41:00.849
Instead of this really, even if like, I know
00:41:00.849 --> 00:41:04.369
mileage may vary as they say, but like, I think
00:41:04.369 --> 00:41:07.750
you'd agree that this movie is at least worth
00:41:07.750 --> 00:41:11.900
thinking about. It's a conversation starter,
00:41:11.900 --> 00:41:13.960
that's for sure. And it's a conversation piece
00:41:13.960 --> 00:41:16.179
in the sense of, like, there's a lot of interesting
00:41:16.179 --> 00:41:19.679
things in this movie to talk about, and he hits
00:41:19.679 --> 00:41:22.000
on a lot of really interesting themes, right?
00:41:22.179 --> 00:41:25.920
So, like, even mileage, like, you still, like,
00:41:25.960 --> 00:41:28.510
it's not a one -star movie for you. No. I gave
00:41:28.510 --> 00:41:31.030
it three. So why I wanted to say this is just
00:41:31.030 --> 00:41:32.889
for the audience. It's not like Dalton's sitting
00:41:32.889 --> 00:41:35.070
here being like, this is the worst movie of the
00:41:35.070 --> 00:41:37.550
year. Maddie has seen this from me many times.
00:41:37.550 --> 00:41:40.090
Yeah, we were talking about this. Which is, when
00:41:40.440 --> 00:41:44.559
I can't fully crack what's eating at me in a
00:41:44.559 --> 00:41:48.199
movie, I get weirdly somber about it. I know,
00:41:48.260 --> 00:41:50.260
and I kind of have to be like, it's okay, bud.
00:41:50.760 --> 00:41:54.179
But I have to keep going until I have formed
00:41:54.469 --> 00:41:59.789
a full opinion. I just get angry, dude. I know.
00:42:00.670 --> 00:42:06.929
Different, different. A lot of my qualms were
00:42:06.929 --> 00:42:09.969
I found, and this goes back again to the way
00:42:09.969 --> 00:42:13.010
I keep saying, I keep judging the movie for what
00:42:13.010 --> 00:42:16.010
it isn't instead of what it is. I found there's
00:42:16.010 --> 00:42:18.050
a lot of threads in this movie that he introduces
00:42:18.050 --> 00:42:20.710
and doesn't follow through on that I thought
00:42:20.710 --> 00:42:22.650
could have been much more interesting than the
00:42:22.650 --> 00:42:25.730
things that were in the movie. Which, again.
00:42:26.199 --> 00:42:29.800
That's not really a fair criticism. I think it's
00:42:29.800 --> 00:42:32.559
partly fair because it's because those elements
00:42:32.559 --> 00:42:35.719
are introduced in the film. Right. But he, as
00:42:35.719 --> 00:42:38.400
the filmmaker, has chosen to go a different direction.
00:42:38.739 --> 00:42:41.699
And it's me watching it. I just like, well, I
00:42:41.699 --> 00:42:44.159
don't feel this is the right direction. I kind
00:42:44.159 --> 00:42:46.980
of think you're right. Yeah. Like, do you know
00:42:46.980 --> 00:42:49.079
what I mean? But I can't I don't know what that
00:42:49.079 --> 00:42:51.480
movie looks like. Do you know what I mean? Yeah,
00:42:51.480 --> 00:42:54.519
exactly. And it's. Like because the things I
00:42:54.519 --> 00:42:56.420
mean, maybe you can point out maybe one or two
00:42:56.420 --> 00:42:58.719
examples, because the couple of things that you
00:42:58.719 --> 00:43:00.980
were saying to me, I actually I was like, well,
00:43:01.039 --> 00:43:02.579
yeah, I'd like to see that. Yeah, I can probably.
00:43:02.639 --> 00:43:07.179
I mean, like the two the two biggest like instead
00:43:07.179 --> 00:43:10.400
of just listing off a bunch. Right. The two that
00:43:10.400 --> 00:43:13.219
stood out to me was, I mean, as much as I think,
00:43:13.219 --> 00:43:16.599
like you said, Skylar Gisondo storyline was the
00:43:16.599 --> 00:43:20.070
strongest part of that film. They introduced
00:43:20.070 --> 00:43:22.110
a few concepts at the beginning with him and
00:43:22.110 --> 00:43:25.409
his friend slash acting coach, whatever their
00:43:25.409 --> 00:43:28.469
relationship is, where they touch on an almost
00:43:28.469 --> 00:43:32.210
predatory aspect of it. I don't want to give
00:43:32.210 --> 00:43:34.690
away too many details in the movie, but there's
00:43:34.690 --> 00:43:38.369
a phone call where maybe he says a few unwarranted
00:43:38.369 --> 00:43:41.289
sexual things that are kind of played off like,
00:43:41.369 --> 00:43:44.110
oh, I'm joking. But he introduces that notion
00:43:44.110 --> 00:43:49.239
and then we don't really... expand on that any
00:43:49.239 --> 00:43:50.940
further which is okay because he's touched on
00:43:50.940 --> 00:43:54.559
the notion but I'm like this is a very interesting
00:43:54.559 --> 00:43:57.199
thing that you've just introduced that you have
00:43:57.199 --> 00:44:00.019
not followed through and the other one which
00:44:00.019 --> 00:44:03.179
is a recurring theme that isn't explored very
00:44:03.179 --> 00:44:09.559
deeply is the the war on terror is going on during
00:44:09.559 --> 00:44:13.239
this era and they keep showing you see pictures
00:44:13.239 --> 00:44:16.710
of Saddam Hussein several times you see them
00:44:16.710 --> 00:44:19.210
watching the news and coverage of Afghanistan.
00:44:19.750 --> 00:44:23.230
Stone Phillips. Stone Phillips, exactly. And
00:44:23.260 --> 00:44:29.139
it's... Mike talked about this off -air, about
00:44:29.139 --> 00:44:33.869
in the film, Hansen's desire to be Stone Phillips
00:44:33.869 --> 00:44:38.070
in this movie, right? And I agree that that's
00:44:38.070 --> 00:44:40.630
absolutely something that Hansen wants for himself.
00:44:41.130 --> 00:44:44.809
But in the film, this idea of comparing the...
00:44:45.420 --> 00:44:49.340
fascination of seeing war on TV and this, the
00:44:49.340 --> 00:44:54.099
post nine 11 mass media consumption and the morbid
00:44:54.099 --> 00:44:57.360
side of that is a major element that I think
00:44:57.360 --> 00:45:00.639
this film could do a lot with. Right. And it
00:45:00.639 --> 00:45:05.320
briefly touches on it. It almost feels like not
00:45:05.320 --> 00:45:08.079
confident enough to go all the way with that
00:45:08.079 --> 00:45:10.760
idea. And that's what I felt. Some of these ideas
00:45:10.760 --> 00:45:15.710
felt like he, he didn't want to go like, I don't
00:45:15.710 --> 00:45:17.889
know if it was a hesitation to go there or not.
00:45:18.030 --> 00:45:20.429
And I was thinking about it earlier today, and
00:45:20.429 --> 00:45:23.210
I think he comes from a documentary background.
00:45:23.530 --> 00:45:27.469
Right. And a lot of times in documentary, it's
00:45:27.469 --> 00:45:36.489
not about sort of, I mean, sometimes it is, but
00:45:36.489 --> 00:45:39.630
about guiding an audience to a point. It's more
00:45:39.630 --> 00:45:43.050
like. where you have to act as a fly -on -the
00:45:43.050 --> 00:45:45.070
-wall observer. It depends on capturing that
00:45:45.070 --> 00:45:47.929
moment. Exactly. And then you figure that out
00:45:47.929 --> 00:45:53.019
later. And to me, it felt more like the film
00:45:53.019 --> 00:45:57.179
was dramatizations of events. I mean, extreme
00:45:57.179 --> 00:46:00.500
dramatizations a lot of times, but rather than
00:46:00.500 --> 00:46:06.619
a story, like a genuine, like the way narrative
00:46:06.619 --> 00:46:10.070
films breathe. So I don't know if it's just...
00:46:10.309 --> 00:46:14.070
It's not what I'm used to and it's not what I
00:46:14.070 --> 00:46:18.510
expect out of a story that kept me that kept
00:46:18.510 --> 00:46:21.610
me at a distance. Those are my main things. But
00:46:21.610 --> 00:46:23.869
I said I do have a lot of positives on the movie,
00:46:23.909 --> 00:46:25.730
too. And it's a lot of things you already mentioned.
00:46:25.829 --> 00:46:30.289
The movie looks incredible. It's edited in an
00:46:30.289 --> 00:46:33.070
incredible way. Yeah. Everybody in it's great.
00:46:33.190 --> 00:46:37.269
I just think my problems come from more conceptual
00:46:37.269 --> 00:46:42.050
ideas of the movie. I think for me and listeners
00:46:42.050 --> 00:46:44.150
of the show slash the people around this table
00:46:44.150 --> 00:46:48.130
will know, if there's like, especially with pop
00:46:48.130 --> 00:46:52.869
culture or filmmaking, acting, when a film touches
00:46:52.869 --> 00:46:56.409
on that and the darker side of that with pop
00:46:56.409 --> 00:47:00.570
culture, basically what it comes down to is like,
00:47:00.630 --> 00:47:03.289
what are you willing to sacrifice for art and
00:47:03.289 --> 00:47:07.710
for... That is a really big hook for me. So...
00:47:08.150 --> 00:47:10.530
That's why things like The Substance really works
00:47:10.530 --> 00:47:14.710
for me. Something like Tatane really works on
00:47:14.710 --> 00:47:18.610
me in a lot of ways. This idea of obsession and
00:47:18.610 --> 00:47:24.409
figuring, all of that stuff. Specifically, obviously,
00:47:24.550 --> 00:47:28.510
most recently, The Substance is a very similar,
00:47:28.650 --> 00:47:35.150
we'll say, journey as Decoy Dan. He gets what
00:47:35.150 --> 00:47:37.860
he wants at the end. Same with Demi Moore in
00:47:37.860 --> 00:47:39.780
The Substance. But at what cost. But at what
00:47:39.780 --> 00:47:44.320
cost. And that premise is just always something
00:47:44.320 --> 00:47:47.800
that I'm going to be interested in. And I do
00:47:47.800 --> 00:47:50.500
love, you know, I'm conflicted on this because
00:47:50.500 --> 00:47:53.800
on one hand, I really wish this movie would play
00:47:53.800 --> 00:47:58.780
in a wider demographic for capitalistic reasons
00:47:58.780 --> 00:48:01.639
because of where I work and the amount of sacrifices
00:48:01.639 --> 00:48:05.280
I had to make and we had to make to get the movie
00:48:05.280 --> 00:48:08.250
to the Highland. However, the movie definitely
00:48:08.250 --> 00:48:14.030
is not as wide in terms of the demographic because
00:48:14.030 --> 00:48:17.409
of the darkness of the movie. Yeah. And because
00:48:17.409 --> 00:48:20.929
it's not your typical, it's not a biopic. I wouldn't
00:48:20.929 --> 00:48:23.210
really call this movie. No, I wouldn't either.
00:48:23.960 --> 00:48:25.320
It's like a movie that has... It's like a fever
00:48:25.320 --> 00:48:28.519
dream. Yeah. It's a very sensationalized version
00:48:28.519 --> 00:48:31.840
of... It might as well be a fictional, like a
00:48:31.840 --> 00:48:33.880
fiction, non -fiction retelling, you know? One
00:48:33.880 --> 00:48:36.599
note, just to piggyback off that, was one of
00:48:36.599 --> 00:48:39.820
my biggest things about this movie was I found
00:48:39.820 --> 00:48:42.739
the real life Hansen more interesting than the
00:48:42.739 --> 00:48:45.019
version they presented in the movie, which again...
00:48:45.360 --> 00:48:47.599
is not a fair criticism because that's not the
00:48:47.599 --> 00:48:49.940
version we're getting. But it's hard to ignore
00:48:49.940 --> 00:48:52.139
for me. I actually really enjoyed the aspect
00:48:52.139 --> 00:48:55.179
and the way they approached him in this one because
00:48:55.179 --> 00:48:58.800
I feel it was... perfectly fitting for a show
00:48:58.800 --> 00:49:01.980
like to catch a predator as sensationalist as
00:49:01.980 --> 00:49:05.699
it was and as um hyperbolic as that show was
00:49:05.699 --> 00:49:08.639
i felt it was fitting to match the man who is
00:49:08.639 --> 00:49:10.699
the face of that show and ran that show to be
00:49:10.699 --> 00:49:13.420
as sensationalist and as hyperbolic as possible
00:49:13.420 --> 00:49:15.320
i thought that was actually a good touch rather
00:49:15.320 --> 00:49:17.420
than it being like a straight down the line uh
00:49:17.420 --> 00:49:21.039
performance and and depiction of who he really
00:49:21.039 --> 00:49:22.960
was as a person and see where i i always found
00:49:22.960 --> 00:49:25.920
it more interesting that the show was like that,
00:49:26.000 --> 00:49:28.860
but he wasn't. And he was like a stone cold psychopath
00:49:28.860 --> 00:49:31.059
with like completely indifferent to the things
00:49:31.059 --> 00:49:33.139
around him. Well, this touches on another thing
00:49:33.139 --> 00:49:38.099
that I always, I love in film, in all art really,
00:49:38.219 --> 00:49:41.280
but specifically in film because I think it does
00:49:41.280 --> 00:49:45.679
the best, you get the most out of it in my opinion,
00:49:45.780 --> 00:49:50.920
but where there's not really, the whole movie
00:49:50.920 --> 00:49:54.510
is morally gray at best. The characters are all
00:49:54.510 --> 00:49:59.170
morally gray at best. And the idea of like, what
00:49:59.170 --> 00:50:03.670
is a hero and what is a villain? A lot of the
00:50:03.670 --> 00:50:08.090
lines are blurred. And to do that successfully
00:50:08.090 --> 00:50:13.530
in a movie where the line should be so clear
00:50:13.530 --> 00:50:20.230
is so interesting to me. And I think, and again,
00:50:20.289 --> 00:50:24.519
that's just a theme. For me, that is I'm always
00:50:24.519 --> 00:50:27.559
going to be interested in is morally gray people
00:50:27.559 --> 00:50:31.199
and morally gray characters, morally gray artists.
00:50:31.860 --> 00:50:34.800
That's just that's that's what that's always
00:50:34.800 --> 00:50:37.519
going to pique my interest. So to have a whole
00:50:37.519 --> 00:50:40.639
movie that is, again, probably another reason
00:50:40.639 --> 00:50:44.099
why this movie isn't touching on more demographics
00:50:44.099 --> 00:50:48.360
is because of its it because if it was a straight
00:50:48.360 --> 00:50:51.079
up. And I'm not going to use this lightly, but
00:50:51.079 --> 00:50:53.719
straight up Angel Studios, Sound of Freedom.
00:50:53.880 --> 00:50:58.139
Chris Hansen is the hero of the movie. This movie
00:50:58.139 --> 00:51:01.059
would be much more widely accepted and probably
00:51:01.059 --> 00:51:04.179
would do better at the box office. But the movie
00:51:04.179 --> 00:51:06.539
is not interested in that. And the filmmaker
00:51:06.539 --> 00:51:08.579
is not interested in that. That's what makes
00:51:08.579 --> 00:51:11.800
me interested in the movie and why so far it's
00:51:11.800 --> 00:51:14.320
my favorite movie of the year, because it does
00:51:14.320 --> 00:51:19.369
have the juice to attack those kind of. themes
00:51:19.369 --> 00:51:21.969
that are really difficult to attack and you need
00:51:21.969 --> 00:51:25.250
an art form like filmmaking to do all that because
00:51:25.250 --> 00:51:28.889
you need all the tools at your hands to to bring
00:51:28.889 --> 00:51:30.969
it all together bring it all together he did
00:51:30.969 --> 00:51:32.510
it in a way that you could only tell the story
00:51:32.510 --> 00:51:34.610
through a movie and that's one of my favorite
00:51:34.610 --> 00:51:37.289
parts of filmmaking absolutely why this wasn't
00:51:37.289 --> 00:51:39.230
a book why this wasn't you know it's Because
00:51:39.230 --> 00:51:41.510
of the visual medium, it really heightens the
00:51:41.510 --> 00:51:44.150
experience for me. This is not a movie for everybody.
00:51:44.429 --> 00:51:45.849
I think a lot of people are going to struggle
00:51:45.849 --> 00:51:47.050
with it. I think a lot of people are going to
00:51:47.050 --> 00:51:49.530
be very uncomfortable watching it. So know what
00:51:49.530 --> 00:51:51.550
you're getting into if you do choose to watch
00:51:51.550 --> 00:51:54.110
it. But I do think it is worth watching. It's
00:51:54.110 --> 00:51:56.630
a strong recommend from my side of the table
00:51:56.630 --> 00:51:58.929
over here. Or at least from three of us. Would
00:51:58.929 --> 00:52:03.619
you recommend people watch it? You can. You can.
00:52:03.780 --> 00:52:06.219
I don't say you have to rush out and see it.
00:52:06.239 --> 00:52:08.760
Fair enough. I don't recommend you should see
00:52:08.760 --> 00:52:12.039
anything. I would say go and watch what you want
00:52:12.039 --> 00:52:13.460
to watch. If it sounds interesting, go see it.
00:52:13.460 --> 00:52:16.059
And if it sounds interesting, go and see it.
00:52:16.559 --> 00:52:19.219
Yeah. Nah, I'm going to say go see it. But with
00:52:19.219 --> 00:52:21.519
that being said, we have a few minutes left in
00:52:21.519 --> 00:52:26.750
our day, in our time here. Squeaky ass chair.
00:52:27.070 --> 00:52:31.829
For you to take the reins for your episode, for
00:52:31.829 --> 00:52:33.630
your birthday episode next week. Pike's Picks.
00:52:33.750 --> 00:52:40.909
Pike's Picks. Exactly. So, next week, the plan
00:52:40.909 --> 00:52:45.369
is, actually, right now, what the plan is, is
00:52:45.369 --> 00:52:48.349
I am going to... You're going to give us some
00:52:48.349 --> 00:52:50.110
assignments? I'm going to give each of you a
00:52:50.110 --> 00:52:54.530
film from my personal collection. It's my favorite
00:52:54.530 --> 00:52:59.039
kind of homework. That I think it's tailored
00:52:59.039 --> 00:53:00.840
to all of you specifically. It's a movie that
00:53:00.840 --> 00:53:05.300
I think you will enjoy. And then the plan next
00:53:05.300 --> 00:53:08.019
week is almost like a little director's chair
00:53:08.019 --> 00:53:10.420
style thing, which is. I've seen all Russ Meyer's
00:53:10.420 --> 00:53:13.940
movies. Okay. And that was the other thing. I
00:53:13.940 --> 00:53:16.699
tried to pick movies that I thought you hadn't
00:53:16.699 --> 00:53:18.099
seen. That's why we're going to do this now.
00:53:18.119 --> 00:53:21.639
So what I'm doing is, Maddie, I know you haven't
00:53:21.639 --> 00:53:23.820
seen this one. Because I use a watch list. She
00:53:23.820 --> 00:53:27.119
uses a watch list. And then I have. One for each
00:53:27.119 --> 00:53:29.019
of you and a backup in case you have seen it.
00:53:29.039 --> 00:53:32.239
Okay. But next week we'll do a discussion where
00:53:32.239 --> 00:53:35.039
we'll take about 15 minutes each and we'll talk
00:53:35.039 --> 00:53:36.599
about it and we'll kind of talk about it for
00:53:36.599 --> 00:53:38.960
the other people who maybe haven't seen it. And
00:53:38.960 --> 00:53:41.659
I think it'll be a fun discussion. So we'll start
00:53:41.659 --> 00:53:43.139
with Maddie because she's got one option. Yeah,
00:53:43.139 --> 00:53:48.010
I'm the easy one. That would be... David Lean's...
00:53:48.010 --> 00:53:51.369
Whoa, whoa, whoa. What? Dalton's bringing out
00:53:51.369 --> 00:53:54.010
physical media. Physical media, yes. On the show.
00:53:54.090 --> 00:53:55.769
I should have, yes. Criterion. Well, as I said,
00:53:55.869 --> 00:53:57.829
I brought them from my personal collection. Okay.
00:53:57.829 --> 00:53:59.389
Well, you said there's movies from your personal
00:53:59.389 --> 00:54:01.809
collection. Yeah, I brought them. So we have
00:54:01.809 --> 00:54:04.349
to watch them. And then you're entrusting us
00:54:04.349 --> 00:54:07.070
with this. So this is David Lean's Summertime.
00:54:07.170 --> 00:54:09.429
I almost watched this in the past, like, six
00:54:09.429 --> 00:54:13.059
months. I'm glad you didn't. How much time do
00:54:13.059 --> 00:54:14.320
we have? Do you want to read what it says on
00:54:14.320 --> 00:54:15.239
the back? We've got four minutes. Yes, just read
00:54:15.239 --> 00:54:17.159
what's on the back. With the sublime, bittersweet
00:54:17.159 --> 00:54:19.320
tale of romantic longing, director David Lean
00:54:19.320 --> 00:54:21.119
left behind the British soundstage to capture
00:54:21.119 --> 00:54:24.539
in Radiant Technicolor the sun -splashed glory
00:54:24.539 --> 00:54:26.699
of Venice at the height of summer. It's a tour
00:54:26.699 --> 00:54:29.099
de force of fearless vulnerability. I don't know.
00:54:29.099 --> 00:54:33.260
This is long, but it's a Catherine Hepburn. and
00:54:33.260 --> 00:54:37.260
she is a lonely middle -aged tourist from America,
00:54:37.340 --> 00:54:39.940
and she meets up with an Italian shopkeeper.
00:54:40.159 --> 00:54:43.199
Yes. And directed by the man who brought you
00:54:43.199 --> 00:54:47.219
Lawrence of Arabia, Dr. Zhivago. Check the runtime
00:54:47.219 --> 00:54:50.039
on that, would you? It's not bad. It's not bad.
00:54:50.119 --> 00:54:54.840
340. It's 100 minutes. Oh, perfect. Not at all.
00:54:54.840 --> 00:54:58.019
Four hours, 39 minutes. Don brought me War and
00:54:58.019 --> 00:55:05.750
Peace. I did that before. Michael. Yes. For your
00:55:05.750 --> 00:55:08.730
viewing pleasure. For your homework. Now, do
00:55:08.730 --> 00:55:11.369
we feel like I should just hand you my first
00:55:11.369 --> 00:55:13.590
pick and then you say, or should I hand you two
00:55:13.590 --> 00:55:15.610
of them? No, no, no. Do one at a time. Yeah,
00:55:15.630 --> 00:55:18.449
I gotta do the first one. I'll be honest with
00:55:18.449 --> 00:55:21.889
you if I've seen it. Okay. 100%. This is a movie
00:55:21.889 --> 00:55:25.269
that I think you will quite enjoy. And this one
00:55:25.269 --> 00:55:27.250
I was uncertain if you had seen, but I didn't
00:55:27.250 --> 00:55:29.309
think you had. I brought Money Train to you,
00:55:29.309 --> 00:55:32.190
dude. You did. This is a movie I know Maddie
00:55:32.190 --> 00:55:35.869
likes quite a bit. That would be Peter Bogdanovich's
00:55:35.869 --> 00:55:40.250
Targets. I have not seen this movie. Okay. So
00:55:40.250 --> 00:55:42.789
this, maybe rather than having people read them,
00:55:42.829 --> 00:55:44.150
I should kind of give you a little bit about
00:55:44.150 --> 00:55:49.150
what it is. This is sort of the response to horror
00:55:49.150 --> 00:55:54.090
movies, and it features Boris Karloff. Yes. Features
00:55:54.090 --> 00:56:00.630
Peter Bogdanovich and a young fella who has an
00:56:00.630 --> 00:56:03.869
obsession with his rifle and takes it to the
00:56:03.869 --> 00:56:06.980
streets. You spoke about this movie in the previous
00:56:06.980 --> 00:56:09.380
episode, the You and Maddie episode. I think
00:56:09.380 --> 00:56:10.519
I spoke about this movie. I think Maddie spoke
00:56:10.519 --> 00:56:12.599
about it, yes. Because Dalton told me to watch
00:56:12.599 --> 00:56:15.900
it. A clean 90 minutes. Yes, it is. It's a clean
00:56:15.900 --> 00:56:18.500
90. That's why I knew Mike would like it. But
00:56:18.500 --> 00:56:21.420
yeah, this has a lot of, I mean, again, we just
00:56:21.420 --> 00:56:25.260
pointed out, it's about, it takes place in new
00:56:25.260 --> 00:56:28.579
Hollywood horror, real life horror, has some
00:56:28.579 --> 00:56:30.739
really dark ideas in it. I'm not going to spoil
00:56:30.739 --> 00:56:35.929
it. And yeah. This looks fantastic. It's new
00:56:35.929 --> 00:56:37.570
Hollywood meets old Hollywood. First one he directed.
00:56:37.570 --> 00:56:39.650
First movie he ever made. Wow. Which is insane.
00:56:39.849 --> 00:56:43.550
And it's crazy. Elijah, we're going out there
00:56:43.550 --> 00:56:46.309
for you. That's my favorite thing to hear. Because...
00:56:46.309 --> 00:56:51.570
I love going out there. You and I, we saw a film
00:56:51.789 --> 00:56:53.309
together earlier this year, and I know that you
00:56:53.309 --> 00:56:56.650
like Asian films. I sure do. And I know that
00:56:56.650 --> 00:57:01.309
you're not as experienced with some older movies.
00:57:01.550 --> 00:57:04.269
That's right. Now... This one, I don't know if
00:57:04.269 --> 00:57:07.690
anyone here besides myself has seen this, but
00:57:07.690 --> 00:57:10.030
I felt it was a movie that you would like because
00:57:10.030 --> 00:57:14.349
it's a Japanese movie. It's super cool. It's
00:57:14.349 --> 00:57:17.550
artistic, and it's out there. And that would
00:57:17.550 --> 00:57:21.510
be Seijin Suzuki's Branded to Kill. That's such
00:57:21.510 --> 00:57:27.829
a sick name. This is like pop art, sort of black
00:57:27.829 --> 00:57:31.730
and white, endlessly cool, endlessly badass.
00:57:34.320 --> 00:57:37.400
If this would be your first Seijin Suzuki movie,
00:57:37.599 --> 00:57:40.619
I don't want to say too much, but I think you
00:57:40.619 --> 00:57:42.219
are going to like it. Do you mind if I just read
00:57:42.219 --> 00:57:44.059
the first sentence for everybody? Absolutely.
00:57:44.340 --> 00:57:46.739
How do you pronounce his name? Seijin Suzuki.
00:57:47.139 --> 00:57:49.960
Seijin Suzuki. Okay. When Japanese new wave bad
00:57:49.960 --> 00:57:53.239
boy, Seijin Suzuki, delivered this brutal, hilarious,
00:57:53.320 --> 00:57:55.960
and visually inspired masterpiece to the executives
00:57:55.960 --> 00:57:59.190
at his studio. He was promptly fired. Let's go.
00:57:59.750 --> 00:58:02.929
No better hook. Yeah. I am sold. He handed that
00:58:02.929 --> 00:58:05.769
movie in and they fired him immediately. I love
00:58:05.769 --> 00:58:08.429
it. I'm so hyped. Yeah. So those are the movies
00:58:08.429 --> 00:58:11.269
for your homework. Okay. I want to watch all
00:58:11.269 --> 00:58:13.710
these. And that's the thing. I also figured I
00:58:13.710 --> 00:58:15.309
could do this. You have a week. If you wanted
00:58:15.309 --> 00:58:18.469
to see the other movies here, then you had time
00:58:18.469 --> 00:58:20.829
to do that. It's fantastic. I'm really looking
00:58:20.829 --> 00:58:22.829
forward to this. Thank you so much. Yes. Great
00:58:22.829 --> 00:58:25.570
homework. Yeah. And thank you to everybody listening
00:58:25.570 --> 00:58:28.849
for listening. to another episode of Outside
00:58:28.849 --> 00:58:30.989
the Frame, London's only movie talk show. My
00:58:30.989 --> 00:58:33.050
name's Elijah. I'm Maddie. I'm Mike. I'm Dalton.
00:58:33.090 --> 00:58:34.989
And we will see you all next week. Take care
00:58:34.989 --> 00:58:36.210
of yourselves. Until then.
00:00:00.210 --> 00:00:02.529
Alright Mr. DeMille, I'm ready for my close -up.
00:00:02.549 --> 00:00:05.650
You are too, didn't you? Outside the frame. 94
00:00:05.650 --> 00:00:11.480
.9 Radio Western. Outside the frame. It's my
00:00:12.560 --> 00:00:42.689
turn! 94 .9 Radio Western, you are tuned into
00:00:42.689 --> 00:00:45.109
Outside the Frame, London's only movie talk show.
00:00:45.149 --> 00:00:47.429
My name's Elijah. I'm Maddie. I'm Mike. I'm Dalton.
00:00:47.570 --> 00:00:49.390
And we are here to talk to you about film and
00:00:49.390 --> 00:00:51.390
the culture that surrounds it. If you'd like
00:00:51.390 --> 00:00:52.990
to take part in the conversation, feel free.
00:00:53.210 --> 00:01:01.250
519 -661 -3600. That is 519 -661 -3600. Guys,
00:01:01.710 --> 00:01:05.609
we have a topic to get to today. But I know that
00:01:05.609 --> 00:01:08.469
there's been some news. that has happened in
00:01:08.469 --> 00:01:11.549
the past week or so. So I wanted to, at the very
00:01:11.549 --> 00:01:13.590
least, kind of get through that a little bit,
00:01:13.590 --> 00:01:15.890
maybe quickly first, because we also have something
00:01:15.890 --> 00:01:19.049
to get into at the end. Looking at you, Dalton.
00:01:19.189 --> 00:01:21.049
You're looking at me. I'm looking at you. So
00:01:21.049 --> 00:01:23.450
the first thing that I wanted to talk about news
00:01:23.450 --> 00:01:25.090
-wise, and probably the only thing, unless anybody
00:01:25.090 --> 00:01:27.689
else has something to chime in, is the new Star
00:01:27.689 --> 00:01:31.670
Wars update. So it was reported that they are
00:01:31.670 --> 00:01:35.069
starting, or I guess restarting. Continuing.
00:01:35.450 --> 00:01:39.049
Yeah. They're continuing the Skywalker saga with
00:01:39.049 --> 00:01:43.269
episode 10. With no Skywalkers. Exactly. Actually.
00:01:43.849 --> 00:01:46.209
I have heard that Daisy Ridley might be in this.
00:01:46.390 --> 00:01:47.650
Yeah, but she's not a Skywalker. Oh, that's right.
00:01:47.730 --> 00:01:49.810
She's not a Skywalker. God, this ninth movie
00:01:49.810 --> 00:01:52.409
is killing me, man. So the tenth one will be...
00:01:52.409 --> 00:01:57.310
Ha, don't care. Holy crap, I don't care. Maddie?
00:01:57.709 --> 00:01:59.989
I'm just like, oh, did Star Wars news come out
00:01:59.989 --> 00:02:01.810
this week? More Star Wars. You know what they
00:02:01.810 --> 00:02:04.489
could do? Don't make any more. Well, that's exactly
00:02:04.489 --> 00:02:07.030
what our point is, I think. I will say, if you
00:02:07.030 --> 00:02:09.050
are to make another Star Wars, I would rather
00:02:09.050 --> 00:02:11.330
it not be Skywalker related. Yeah, correct. Exactly.
00:02:11.389 --> 00:02:13.349
I think they tend to do better when they... try
00:02:13.349 --> 00:02:17.110
new things as of late. I absolutely agree and
00:02:17.110 --> 00:02:20.789
also don't do it. And don't hire John Watts and
00:02:20.789 --> 00:02:23.030
Simon Kinberg to do it. Yeah, and that's kind
00:02:23.030 --> 00:02:25.009
of like the big thing. Don't do any of these
00:02:25.009 --> 00:02:27.490
things. About a year removed from when the news
00:02:27.490 --> 00:02:30.409
dropped that the Soderbergh Adam Driver Star
00:02:30.409 --> 00:02:35.099
Wars movie was shot down. It's just insane. Yeah,
00:02:35.159 --> 00:02:38.240
let's do Sean Levy and John Watts movies. It's
00:02:38.240 --> 00:02:40.560
almost disrespectful. I would rather go spend
00:02:40.560 --> 00:02:44.020
two hours at Guelph's Homecoming than go see
00:02:44.020 --> 00:02:45.719
this movie. Getting pepper sprayed? Yeah, than
00:02:45.719 --> 00:02:49.139
going to see another Star Wars movie. It's getting
00:02:49.139 --> 00:02:51.199
pretty bad. That's the thing. I feel everyone
00:02:51.199 --> 00:02:53.580
feels that way, and they're panicking. Well,
00:02:53.620 --> 00:02:56.479
I mean, look how Mandalorian did. Literally,
00:02:57.319 --> 00:03:00.639
who cared? Literally on planet Earth, name one.
00:03:00.969 --> 00:03:03.569
one real person who cared. But that's what I'm
00:03:03.569 --> 00:03:06.889
saying. It's like we can't shout. Yeah, you saw
00:03:06.889 --> 00:03:09.949
it. Are you the only one here who saw it? I saw
00:03:09.949 --> 00:03:13.490
it and it's reprehensible. It's not a movie.
00:03:13.710 --> 00:03:16.909
We can shout as many times as we want about like,
00:03:16.949 --> 00:03:19.169
hey, give interesting directors the opportunity
00:03:19.169 --> 00:03:21.930
to do this. Put interesting stories into this.
00:03:22.030 --> 00:03:23.909
And every single time, without fault, they'll
00:03:23.909 --> 00:03:25.860
be like... How about the guy who did Free Guy?
00:03:26.120 --> 00:03:28.400
Yeah, exactly. People liked that, right? Yeah,
00:03:28.439 --> 00:03:31.000
that seems like an easy one. I didn't mind Free
00:03:31.000 --> 00:03:36.240
Guy. But also, don't give that guy Star Wars.
00:03:36.400 --> 00:03:38.300
If you're a director with interesting stories,
00:03:38.400 --> 00:03:39.780
I want you to tell the stories you want to tell,
00:03:39.819 --> 00:03:42.259
not shoehorn it backwards into a Star Wars feature.
00:03:42.500 --> 00:03:45.039
But Soderbergh wrote it specifically for... You
00:03:45.039 --> 00:03:47.240
know what I mean? The second one, if you're doing
00:03:47.240 --> 00:03:50.780
Empire Strikes Back... Sure, sure, yeah. But
00:03:50.780 --> 00:03:53.080
we don't know. Maybe a new one could be... Also...
00:03:53.240 --> 00:03:55.979
Nothing will be that, but it's not going to be.
00:03:56.319 --> 00:04:00.240
If you absolutely have to, in a world of like,
00:04:00.319 --> 00:04:04.740
this must happen, just wait, too. Let it breathe.
00:04:04.960 --> 00:04:07.939
Let it calm down. Get someone who can make a
00:04:07.939 --> 00:04:10.340
movie. Look what happened when they waited. Between
00:04:10.340 --> 00:04:16.939
Jedi and Phantom Menace was 16 years. Phantom
00:04:16.939 --> 00:04:21.819
Menace was pretty like, yeah, it made a butt
00:04:21.819 --> 00:04:24.100
-ton of money, but People pretty much hated it
00:04:24.100 --> 00:04:26.879
until, like, five years ago. Yeah, but then retrospectively,
00:04:26.920 --> 00:04:27.740
you know, the longer you wait. And, I mean, it's
00:04:27.740 --> 00:04:29.699
still bad. Like, it's still not good. But you'll
00:04:29.699 --> 00:04:32.060
get the next generation if you wait another generation.
00:04:32.199 --> 00:04:33.839
Yeah, but that's my point. Yeah, they waited
00:04:33.839 --> 00:04:36.399
10 years. They waited a whole six. So, like,
00:04:36.480 --> 00:04:40.370
for me, like, I was the... age for that movie
00:04:40.370 --> 00:04:43.790
I mean I was 13 14 years old so it was like my
00:04:43.790 --> 00:04:46.889
favorite movie yeah because like I mean I didn't
00:04:46.889 --> 00:04:50.230
know about like the stupid Jar Jar Binks stuff
00:04:50.230 --> 00:04:53.850
or like looked at like all the political stuff
00:04:53.850 --> 00:04:56.129
inside the movie that was boring it's like Darth
00:04:56.129 --> 00:04:58.470
Maul's in it I was like Darth Maul is cool and
00:04:58.470 --> 00:05:01.569
that pod racing was really sick that's all I
00:05:01.569 --> 00:05:03.980
remembered from that movie yeah Right? And then,
00:05:04.060 --> 00:05:06.540
but anyways, yeah, you have to wait. Just give
00:05:06.540 --> 00:05:08.120
it a hot minute. Yeah, I think they've been going,
00:05:08.160 --> 00:05:10.899
they put the cast battle down since they like
00:05:10.899 --> 00:05:13.279
acquired it essentially through Disney and they've
00:05:13.279 --> 00:05:16.079
just been floundering since like the past four
00:05:16.079 --> 00:05:18.240
years, five years, it's been. You know, it's
00:05:18.240 --> 00:05:20.620
a great idea. Why don't we do a Star Wars story
00:05:20.620 --> 00:05:23.040
but put Ryan Gosling in it? How about, let's
00:05:23.040 --> 00:05:25.500
do that. I was so hyped for that. And then Sean
00:05:25.500 --> 00:05:28.259
Levy would do it. That's what I'm saying. Probably
00:05:28.259 --> 00:05:33.019
like one of the most evil. filmmakers out there
00:05:33.019 --> 00:05:35.980
Sean Levy yeah like like what would you like
00:05:35.980 --> 00:05:39.620
like he's if Amazon was a person you know I'm
00:05:39.620 --> 00:05:42.500
gonna put you on the spot give me top three like
00:05:42.500 --> 00:05:45.939
evil filmmakers evil filmmakers cause like I
00:05:45.939 --> 00:05:48.379
know I know at least one of them that you will
00:05:48.379 --> 00:05:51.720
that you'll Sean Levy well aside from Sean Levy
00:05:52.860 --> 00:05:56.500
Evil filmmakers. That's a great question. It's
00:05:56.500 --> 00:05:59.360
got to be to their core. Didn't Orson Welles
00:05:59.360 --> 00:06:01.620
call this person out? Wouldn't that be... Oh,
00:06:01.620 --> 00:06:04.699
like Elia Kazan? Yeah, Elia Kazan's evil. Right?
00:06:07.980 --> 00:06:09.920
Who else is like that, though? Because I'm saying,
00:06:09.959 --> 00:06:12.480
like, are we talking about, like, evil? No, no,
00:06:12.480 --> 00:06:17.220
no, just whatever Dalton dictates is evil. I
00:06:17.220 --> 00:06:19.720
would say Christopher Nolan's evil. So you got
00:06:19.720 --> 00:06:26.009
Nolan, Kazan, and Sean Levy. Traders, all of
00:06:26.009 --> 00:06:27.709
them. I'd just like to point out that he did
00:06:27.709 --> 00:06:31.430
not say Polanski or Allen or any of these. Brett
00:06:31.430 --> 00:06:38.230
Ratner. They're evil people, not evil filmmakers.
00:06:38.750 --> 00:06:42.370
Interesting. They don't make evil movies. Yeah,
00:06:42.410 --> 00:06:45.970
I guess some of them do. The sigh of relief that
00:06:45.970 --> 00:06:48.410
Osgood Perkins just... Oh, yeah, he dodged a
00:06:48.410 --> 00:06:51.750
bullet. He's not fully there yet. Or who is...
00:06:51.750 --> 00:06:54.370
Cain Parsons? Cain Parsons. He's not there yet.
00:06:54.490 --> 00:06:55.850
He's so new. Yeah, he's only made one. He's,
00:06:55.910 --> 00:06:57.750
like, controlled by a demon, but he's not, like,
00:06:57.750 --> 00:07:00.389
evil, you know? That's right. Because he goes
00:07:00.389 --> 00:07:04.449
directed, right? Yeah, by Osgood Perkins. You
00:07:04.449 --> 00:07:07.910
know, you could even say, like, it's what I say
00:07:07.910 --> 00:07:10.769
about backrooms. Like, don't even, like... Osgood
00:07:10.769 --> 00:07:12.430
Perkins wouldn't make that list because he's
00:07:12.430 --> 00:07:14.490
not even considered. He's not relevant enough.
00:07:14.689 --> 00:07:16.689
Well, he's not even a director. Yeah, exactly.
00:07:16.949 --> 00:07:17.970
Do you know what I mean? That's what I mean.
00:07:17.990 --> 00:07:22.110
You just dismiss him. It's not even part of the
00:07:22.110 --> 00:07:24.110
conversation. He's not evil, but he's bad, you
00:07:24.110 --> 00:07:26.889
know? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Like, Back Rooms isn't
00:07:26.889 --> 00:07:28.569
a movie. People can say it's good or bad, but
00:07:28.569 --> 00:07:30.310
I don't even consider it a movie. That's how
00:07:30.310 --> 00:07:33.110
low on the total, like, it's not even a movie.
00:07:33.290 --> 00:07:35.430
That's why you don't get upset about it. That's
00:07:35.430 --> 00:07:36.529
right. I don't get upset about it. Yeah, you
00:07:36.529 --> 00:07:39.129
guys got heated. So, Dolphin over here. So, it's
00:07:39.129 --> 00:07:42.490
probably time to get Mike upset. Yeah. We'll
00:07:42.490 --> 00:07:44.490
get there in a second. Oh, yeah, not yet. We're
00:07:44.490 --> 00:07:46.829
going to start. We'll get to my next evil director.
00:07:46.870 --> 00:07:49.839
I'm just kidding. I'm kidding. Yes. See, you
00:07:49.839 --> 00:07:52.040
ought to be doing the transitions. I'm just surprised
00:07:52.040 --> 00:07:54.079
there wasn't a woman on that list, dude. Yeah,
00:07:54.079 --> 00:07:58.899
I know. Women make movies? So do we want to move
00:07:58.899 --> 00:08:03.779
on? Yeah. I was waiting for you to... The next
00:08:03.779 --> 00:08:06.399
evil director. Yes. The director of Resident
00:08:06.399 --> 00:08:08.740
Evil, Zack Kreger. The Resident Evil director.
00:08:09.120 --> 00:08:11.759
That's right. So we saw Resident Evil all together.
00:08:12.060 --> 00:08:17.149
We did a little... It's a good one. It's a good
00:08:17.149 --> 00:08:19.850
one. We did an impromptu field trip. We did.
00:08:19.970 --> 00:08:22.689
We did. Yeah. Yeah. And it wasn't, it wasn't
00:08:22.689 --> 00:08:25.769
like planned for this, the show. Like, like sometimes
00:08:25.769 --> 00:08:28.189
it just, you know, I was going, I was in Highland
00:08:28.189 --> 00:08:31.110
Cinema. I was watching the movie Hope. Check
00:08:31.110 --> 00:08:35.850
it out. It rips. And afterwards, Dalton came
00:08:35.850 --> 00:08:37.570
up to me and said, hey, you want to go see Resident
00:08:37.570 --> 00:08:38.769
Evil? I was like, yeah, sure. He's like, cool.
00:08:38.990 --> 00:08:40.470
Let's go see it. Let's all go see it. Put it
00:08:40.470 --> 00:08:42.289
in a group chat. Let's go see it. And then we
00:08:42.289 --> 00:08:45.730
just went and saw it. Yeah. So we all met up
00:08:45.730 --> 00:08:48.830
at the Silver City and went and saw the new Zack
00:08:48.830 --> 00:08:52.570
Craig film. It was good. It was fine. It was
00:08:52.570 --> 00:08:56.870
fine. So it doesn't even get a fine. It's a motion
00:08:56.870 --> 00:09:00.090
picture. I don't know what it is about his movies.
00:09:00.129 --> 00:09:03.450
I personally do not gel with his humor. So for
00:09:03.450 --> 00:09:04.850
everyone who's like, this movie's hilarious,
00:09:05.070 --> 00:09:07.210
I'm like, I do not find it funny. So I think
00:09:07.210 --> 00:09:09.690
I'm already losing half the battle there. See,
00:09:09.690 --> 00:09:13.330
I didn't find it funny in the... what was clearly
00:09:13.330 --> 00:09:16.610
supposed to be funny. The things that I enjoyed
00:09:16.610 --> 00:09:20.610
or found funny about it was just the gross. Yeah,
00:09:20.669 --> 00:09:23.269
the dark stuff was funny. Just the grossness
00:09:23.269 --> 00:09:27.090
of the creatures and stuff. That makes me happy
00:09:27.090 --> 00:09:30.129
and makes me giggle. So that's what I found.
00:09:30.289 --> 00:09:32.899
But that's not intent. I know what you're saying
00:09:32.899 --> 00:09:36.100
because I'm in the same boat. The ongoing commentary.
00:09:36.100 --> 00:09:39.440
It got a little annoying. If that guy just didn't
00:09:39.440 --> 00:09:41.419
say it, if the lead just didn't say it, it would
00:09:41.419 --> 00:09:42.879
have been better. Or punctuated because there
00:09:42.879 --> 00:09:45.019
was a couple lines where I'm like, those lines
00:09:45.019 --> 00:09:47.159
were okay, but it's when you're talking the entire
00:09:47.159 --> 00:09:49.600
movie when I want it to be tense. I laughed once,
00:09:49.740 --> 00:09:53.259
but I thought it was a pretty good bit when he's
00:09:53.259 --> 00:09:57.759
just like, oh, interesting. Such an odd line
00:09:57.759 --> 00:09:59.299
read that it was funny. Yeah, that it was funny.
00:09:59.340 --> 00:10:02.320
Yeah. That and the bracelet. Yeah, that also
00:10:02.320 --> 00:10:05.299
got me. I like the key bit, too, where he keeps,
00:10:05.419 --> 00:10:07.480
like, trying to shoot. There's so many, like,
00:10:08.200 --> 00:10:10.200
keys and he can't get the right. I thought that
00:10:10.200 --> 00:10:13.620
was a funny bit. Yeah. The padlocks that he always
00:10:13.620 --> 00:10:15.000
comes across. I thought that was interesting,
00:10:15.240 --> 00:10:18.720
too. Yeah. Yeah, it's, if you are in the mood
00:10:18.720 --> 00:10:21.480
for a, I mean, it's 90 minutes flat. It's nice
00:10:21.480 --> 00:10:24.120
and quick. Yeah. There's some gross stuff in
00:10:24.120 --> 00:10:27.490
it, which is awesome. It's not going to change
00:10:27.490 --> 00:10:30.549
your life. No. And I will say I really appreciated
00:10:30.549 --> 00:10:32.669
the lighting in this movie. For a horror movie,
00:10:32.830 --> 00:10:36.210
at least it looked like a movie. It was interesting
00:10:36.210 --> 00:10:39.590
in that sense. And I just think it's just fine.
00:10:39.870 --> 00:10:42.389
And I think a lot of people are really over -hyping
00:10:42.389 --> 00:10:44.820
it. So I'm like, if you enjoyed it, I'm so happy
00:10:44.820 --> 00:10:47.980
for you. I just can't get there with his movies.
00:10:48.000 --> 00:10:50.820
That's exactly how I felt about Weapons. Yeah,
00:10:50.820 --> 00:10:55.019
exactly. It's 100 % fine. But the fact that it
00:10:55.019 --> 00:10:58.480
was in the Oscar conversation, I was like, hey,
00:10:58.519 --> 00:11:01.580
man, maybe we need to slow that roll a little
00:11:01.580 --> 00:11:03.759
bit. The character of Gladys is like an Oscar
00:11:03.759 --> 00:11:06.220
-nominated performance. An Oscar -winning performance.
00:11:06.279 --> 00:11:08.460
Sorry, I meant to say winning. But it's like...
00:11:08.690 --> 00:11:11.470
It's really not interesting at all. It's ridiculous.
00:11:11.850 --> 00:11:14.070
It's not that good of a performance. It's not
00:11:14.070 --> 00:11:16.549
that good of a movie. Which is so... Because
00:11:16.549 --> 00:11:20.320
I'm... I don't know about you guys. I actually
00:11:20.320 --> 00:11:24.279
enjoyed Barbarian, his feature. I like it the
00:11:24.279 --> 00:11:26.019
best. It is still my favorite. It's his best
00:11:26.019 --> 00:11:28.779
movie. I think it is the funniest of his movies,
00:11:28.820 --> 00:11:30.940
and it clearly showcased. I mean, he comes from
00:11:30.940 --> 00:11:32.919
a sketch comedy background, white as kids, you
00:11:32.919 --> 00:11:35.340
know. And I think that one did the best at displaying
00:11:35.340 --> 00:11:39.600
that while also still being quite creepy. I think
00:11:39.600 --> 00:11:43.269
that one had the best blend. Yeah. Whereas, which
00:11:43.269 --> 00:11:46.190
is why I was so disappointed by Weapons and I
00:11:46.190 --> 00:11:49.210
guess to an extent this movie because I was hoping
00:11:49.210 --> 00:11:52.649
he would build on that. And I guess his movie,
00:11:52.710 --> 00:11:55.850
at least Weapons, went a little bit further.
00:11:55.990 --> 00:11:57.830
Like it tried to be a little bit more ambitious.
00:11:57.830 --> 00:11:59.429
Yeah, he took some more risks. But yeah, they
00:11:59.429 --> 00:12:01.850
just didn't really pay off in my personal opinion.
00:12:02.830 --> 00:12:06.070
So I'm just left personally at this place with
00:12:06.070 --> 00:12:09.230
Zack Kreger where it's like. The needle has not
00:12:09.230 --> 00:12:12.129
moved. I will still go to see his next movie,
00:12:12.250 --> 00:12:14.909
but I'm still on the spot where I don't hate
00:12:14.909 --> 00:12:17.190
him, or I don't hate his work any less. I don't
00:12:17.190 --> 00:12:19.629
love his work anymore. He's a great cheap night
00:12:19.629 --> 00:12:23.269
director. You just go, you spend whatever cheap
00:12:23.269 --> 00:12:26.529
night is now, seven bucks or something. Seven
00:12:26.529 --> 00:12:28.889
bucks? I don't know how much it is. To go to
00:12:28.889 --> 00:12:30.590
a movie? I don't know how much cheap night is.
00:12:30.590 --> 00:12:33.309
More like 70 bucks. 8 .50? Maybe you bump it
00:12:33.309 --> 00:12:35.570
up a little. I don't know, but that's not like...
00:12:35.820 --> 00:12:38.919
Sure, I'll give you that for whatever, hour and
00:12:38.919 --> 00:12:43.000
a half. But his issue, and I think Barbarian
00:12:43.000 --> 00:12:45.899
has a really strong opening. Yes. And weapons
00:12:45.899 --> 00:12:47.679
has an interesting concept that he starts with.
00:12:47.799 --> 00:12:50.879
But for me, it's like he doesn't, and he's admitted
00:12:50.879 --> 00:12:52.980
it, that he writes movies without knowing where
00:12:52.980 --> 00:12:54.820
they're going. And you can really feel it in
00:12:54.820 --> 00:12:58.799
his movies. So I think Barbarian has the strongest
00:12:58.799 --> 00:13:02.559
first 30 minutes of any of his movies. And I
00:13:02.559 --> 00:13:06.269
think that makes it. his best movie yeah he also
00:13:06.269 --> 00:13:09.429
has like i think he didn't it wasn't as relying
00:13:09.429 --> 00:13:13.330
it didn't rely sorry on as heavily on uh at least
00:13:13.330 --> 00:13:15.169
according to weapon or compared to weapons like
00:13:15.169 --> 00:13:17.830
star power um and getting them to carry it because
00:13:17.830 --> 00:13:21.470
you have you have some big people uh in or big
00:13:21.470 --> 00:13:24.350
two two relatively big actors and uh bill skarsgard
00:13:24.350 --> 00:13:27.610
and justin long yeah so it's really just getting
00:13:27.610 --> 00:13:30.370
people who are really solid and who can work
00:13:30.370 --> 00:13:32.549
within that material the scarier material and
00:13:32.549 --> 00:13:34.950
justin long's very good at playing in horror
00:13:34.950 --> 00:13:36.769
movies as he has been in the past, and comedy
00:13:36.769 --> 00:13:41.330
movies. And his character in Barbarian is just
00:13:41.330 --> 00:13:44.389
the worst, right? So when you see these things
00:13:44.389 --> 00:13:48.090
happening to him, it's quite justified. So all
00:13:48.090 --> 00:13:51.049
that to say, decent time at the movies. Yeah,
00:13:51.070 --> 00:13:53.190
we had fun. Yeah, and I think it's interesting
00:13:53.190 --> 00:13:55.710
too, now more film directors grew up playing
00:13:55.710 --> 00:13:57.529
video games, and now they're the ones adapting
00:13:57.529 --> 00:13:59.889
video games. So this is not a direct adaptation
00:13:59.889 --> 00:14:02.340
of any Resident Evil, but it... has the feel
00:14:02.340 --> 00:14:04.379
of it for a lot of people. Yes. So I do find
00:14:04.379 --> 00:14:05.720
that interesting. At least we're moving in a
00:14:05.720 --> 00:14:07.919
direction where like video game movies might
00:14:07.919 --> 00:14:10.600
actually just like have a good premise to start
00:14:10.600 --> 00:14:12.159
with and there might be better ones down the
00:14:12.159 --> 00:14:14.720
road. So I'm like, I'm okay with this being like
00:14:14.720 --> 00:14:16.539
the next step forward in where that's going.
00:14:16.700 --> 00:14:19.480
And it did, it was like a, it did have a video
00:14:19.480 --> 00:14:22.980
game feel to it. And I, and some. Anybody might
00:14:22.980 --> 00:14:24.960
hear that phrase and say, well, yeah, it's a
00:14:24.960 --> 00:14:27.879
video game movie. What do you expect? No, a lot
00:14:27.879 --> 00:14:30.340
of video game adaptations, they feel like movies.
00:14:30.419 --> 00:14:32.179
They don't feel like video games. So this one
00:14:32.179 --> 00:14:34.059
kind of felt like that. You get the same sensations.
00:14:34.440 --> 00:14:36.139
You get the same jump scares. You feel like you're
00:14:36.139 --> 00:14:39.019
out of ammo. You have to go from this point to
00:14:39.019 --> 00:14:42.299
that point. You have the wrong lock or the wrong
00:14:42.299 --> 00:14:45.679
key lock. The first person stuff. First person
00:14:45.679 --> 00:14:48.100
stuff. Yeah, so there are really interesting
00:14:48.100 --> 00:14:51.100
things that happen in this movie. It's just...
00:14:51.529 --> 00:14:53.370
I just wanted a little bit more. That's all.
00:14:53.470 --> 00:14:55.110
And maybe that's on me for asking for a little
00:14:55.110 --> 00:14:57.370
bit more from a quick 90 -minute Resident Evil
00:14:57.370 --> 00:15:00.210
film. Yeah. I mean, also, apparently, he cut
00:15:00.210 --> 00:15:02.230
out a ton of the jokes. Like, there was another
00:15:02.230 --> 00:15:04.389
cut. That's insane. That everyone was like, it's
00:15:04.389 --> 00:15:06.909
too comedic. And they cut it back. So I'm just
00:15:06.909 --> 00:15:08.809
like, where were we going originally? The amount
00:15:08.809 --> 00:15:11.509
of times the main character mutters something
00:15:11.509 --> 00:15:14.409
to himself. That was the whole time. If you did
00:15:14.409 --> 00:15:16.889
a quick cut of all of those, it might be a third
00:15:16.889 --> 00:15:20.549
of the movie. It's hefty. He's always talking.
00:15:20.669 --> 00:15:23.190
Yeah. The whole movie. And I like Austin Abrams.
00:15:23.190 --> 00:15:26.149
So do I. I'm very excited for Whale Fall later.
00:15:26.529 --> 00:15:29.909
Yeah, come on. That movie's going to be... Might
00:15:29.909 --> 00:15:32.669
have to be another impromptu field trip. Oh,
00:15:32.690 --> 00:15:36.110
sign me up. Sign me up. You in, Maddie? Whale
00:15:36.110 --> 00:15:38.169
fall? I did Resident Evil. I may as well do whale
00:15:38.169 --> 00:15:40.509
fall. There you go. Come on. You'll enjoy it.
00:15:40.629 --> 00:15:42.490
Someone just getting eaten by a whale? What's
00:15:42.490 --> 00:15:43.870
not to like? Is he going to fight his way out?
00:15:43.970 --> 00:15:46.429
Is it a cool 90 minutes? Probably. Probably.
00:15:46.929 --> 00:15:49.610
Also based on a book, which I'm like, what? Which
00:15:49.610 --> 00:15:52.070
is awesome. What is this movie? Is the book Moby
00:15:52.070 --> 00:15:55.049
Dick? It's called Whale Fall. Let's guess. What's
00:15:55.049 --> 00:15:59.590
the run time? 84 minutes. 84. I'm going to go
00:15:59.590 --> 00:16:05.429
100 minutes. So you're going hour 40? Yeah. I'm
00:16:05.429 --> 00:16:09.870
going to go 96 minutes. It's funny. That was
00:16:09.870 --> 00:16:13.250
my first gut instinct, and I was like, I just
00:16:13.250 --> 00:16:14.529
feel like it's one of those ones that I just
00:16:14.529 --> 00:16:17.590
push it a little too. According to IMDb, it is
00:16:17.590 --> 00:16:23.289
one hour and 46 minutes. Ooh. It's a little long.
00:16:23.549 --> 00:16:25.470
That's a little long. That's a little long. That's
00:16:25.470 --> 00:16:27.370
10 minutes too long. I like my runtime better.
00:16:27.529 --> 00:16:30.730
Yeah. Yeah, I think a cool somewhere around 90.
00:16:30.990 --> 00:16:33.889
95? 96 is the perfect runtime for that movie.
00:16:34.710 --> 00:16:38.970
With credits. It's actually 90. Six minutes to
00:16:38.970 --> 00:16:42.169
set up him getting into the whale, and then 90
00:16:42.169 --> 00:16:43.809
minutes in the whale, and then we're done. Then
00:16:43.809 --> 00:16:47.610
we're out. I agree. Why aren't we in Hollywood
00:16:47.610 --> 00:16:49.789
right now? We should run a studio. We already
00:16:49.789 --> 00:16:52.210
pitched Poor Souls. We got the ball rolling.
00:16:53.830 --> 00:16:55.549
Coming to cinemas in 2027. And that was just
00:16:55.549 --> 00:16:57.850
out of prompts that were pulled out of a hat.
00:16:58.049 --> 00:16:59.789
Imagine what we could do if we just had full
00:16:59.789 --> 00:17:01.190
creative freedom. If we tried it for a long period
00:17:01.190 --> 00:17:02.990
of time. We wouldn't hire any evil directors.
00:17:03.309 --> 00:17:06.569
No, no. What would our production company be
00:17:06.569 --> 00:17:09.490
called? OTF. Yeah, I guess so. I guess it would
00:17:09.490 --> 00:17:12.109
have to be. OTF Pictures? OTF Pictures, yeah.
00:17:12.250 --> 00:17:14.470
Maybe do a pictures? A little pictures? A little
00:17:14.470 --> 00:17:16.809
something? A little classy? Not entertainment.
00:17:17.170 --> 00:17:20.569
No, no, no. Pictures. Pictures. Moving pictures?
00:17:21.180 --> 00:17:23.440
No, just pictures. Just pictures. OTF Pictures?
00:17:23.779 --> 00:17:26.500
Yeah, I like it. Presents? Presents. Yeah, I'm
00:17:26.500 --> 00:17:31.539
okay with that. Poor souls. Poor souls. Starring...
00:17:31.539 --> 00:17:35.660
We never figured that out. Check out Mike's birthday
00:17:35.660 --> 00:17:37.079
episode if you don't know what we're talking
00:17:37.079 --> 00:17:41.220
about. Yeah, yeah. So we saw that movie all together.
00:17:41.319 --> 00:17:42.680
We did not see this next movie that we're going
00:17:42.680 --> 00:17:45.819
to talk about all together. But we saw it individually,
00:17:45.980 --> 00:17:48.599
but we all have seen it. You and I were at the
00:17:48.599 --> 00:17:50.460
same screening. Elijah and I were at the same
00:17:50.460 --> 00:17:53.779
screening. So we had right out the gate reactions
00:17:53.779 --> 00:17:57.059
to it. Yes. I saw it before anybody. Yes, you
00:17:57.059 --> 00:18:01.740
did. And you kept it close to the chest. The
00:18:01.740 --> 00:18:04.740
only thing I did was right before Elijah went
00:18:04.740 --> 00:18:07.000
in, I gave him two thumbs up. Yeah. That's the
00:18:07.000 --> 00:18:08.920
only thing. Not only were they two thumbs up,
00:18:08.980 --> 00:18:11.759
but you were like shaking. You were like shaking
00:18:11.759 --> 00:18:14.819
with them. Trembling. Which is quite funny because
00:18:14.819 --> 00:18:18.299
as you were leaving the theater, Maddie, you
00:18:18.299 --> 00:18:22.299
were also like shaking as well. Yes. Which is
00:18:22.299 --> 00:18:24.660
quite interesting. So, I mean, the next movie
00:18:24.660 --> 00:18:27.440
that I haven't said yet, but the next movie just
00:18:27.440 --> 00:18:29.440
premiered this past Friday or was just released
00:18:29.440 --> 00:18:31.819
this past Friday. Sorry. And it goes by the name
00:18:31.819 --> 00:18:35.039
of Primetime. Now, this movie was directed by
00:18:35.039 --> 00:18:40.170
Lance Oppenheim. who usually dabbles in the documentary
00:18:40.170 --> 00:18:42.390
world. I believe this is his first narrative
00:18:42.390 --> 00:18:45.349
film. It is, yeah. And it stars Robert Pattinson,
00:18:45.529 --> 00:18:49.690
Skylar Gazzando, Merritt Weaver. The kid from
00:18:49.690 --> 00:18:53.470
Jerry McFlyer. Jonathan Lipnicki in quite the
00:18:53.470 --> 00:18:56.450
role. Creed from The Office. That's right. Alex
00:18:56.450 --> 00:18:59.369
Winter. Alex Winter. Yeah, this has quite the
00:18:59.369 --> 00:19:03.119
cast in it. Fergie. Not in the cast, but in the
00:19:03.119 --> 00:19:05.559
soundtrack. Yeah, yeah. Needle drop. An amazing
00:19:05.559 --> 00:19:08.839
needle drop. Great needle drop. And it uses its
00:19:08.839 --> 00:19:11.859
cast very, very effectively in a very clever
00:19:11.859 --> 00:19:16.099
way, I found. But this movie is about, it's about,
00:19:16.380 --> 00:19:20.289
kind of, it's about Chris Hansen and the To Catch
00:19:20.289 --> 00:19:23.369
a Predator show. Primetime Wars. Yep, the Primetime
00:19:23.369 --> 00:19:28.250
Wars that it had in 06. And what led to its eventual
00:19:28.250 --> 00:19:33.210
cancellation. Were you guys aware? I mean, I'm
00:19:33.210 --> 00:19:36.950
sure you were aware, but, like, where was lost
00:19:36.950 --> 00:19:42.390
in your... The show. Where was Lost in your world
00:19:42.390 --> 00:19:45.069
at that particular time? So you guys were, what,
00:19:45.150 --> 00:19:48.230
10 to 12 years old -ish? I was 12, yeah. Yeah.
00:19:48.230 --> 00:19:51.150
Was that part of your world, not part of your
00:19:51.150 --> 00:19:52.450
world? I wasn't watching, but I heard about it
00:19:52.450 --> 00:19:54.549
a lot. It was advertised everywhere. It's definitely
00:19:54.549 --> 00:19:57.109
something that you hear about through TV history,
00:19:57.210 --> 00:19:59.730
in a sense. I watched Lost for the first time,
00:19:59.730 --> 00:20:02.559
like... 10 years ago now a little bit but like
00:20:02.559 --> 00:20:05.220
I do love Lost so like watching this movie I
00:20:05.220 --> 00:20:06.980
was like I understand what is going on here but
00:20:06.980 --> 00:20:09.279
like while it was happening that was not on the
00:20:09.279 --> 00:20:14.579
radar for me yeah it was it was I was in wasn't
00:20:14.579 --> 00:20:17.519
quite in film school I was in first year at Sheridan
00:20:17.519 --> 00:20:22.480
at a certificate program to hopefully get into
00:20:22.480 --> 00:20:27.039
film school and that the Lost hype was like it
00:20:27.039 --> 00:20:30.710
reminded me of like a few years later Maybe not
00:20:30.710 --> 00:20:33.990
to the same degree, but very similarly was the
00:20:33.990 --> 00:20:37.890
Breaking Bad situation. Because Breaking Bad
00:20:37.890 --> 00:20:40.650
wasn't... It was a sleeper hit. It was a sleeper.
00:20:40.650 --> 00:20:43.369
It took a little while. Game of Thrones. Game
00:20:43.369 --> 00:20:46.210
of Thrones, yeah. Game of Thrones was probably
00:20:46.210 --> 00:20:51.549
another one. But it was just... It felt... Like
00:20:51.549 --> 00:20:54.029
the last, even those, because Game of Thrones
00:20:54.029 --> 00:20:57.910
was an HBO show, right? And Breaking Bad was
00:20:57.910 --> 00:21:04.750
AMC, right? But Lost was like ABC. ABC. And it's
00:21:04.750 --> 00:21:06.630
kind of, it's interesting because looking back,
00:21:06.670 --> 00:21:08.829
it's kind of like, I would say one of the last
00:21:08.829 --> 00:21:14.000
like big shows. in the zeitgeist that was like
00:21:14.000 --> 00:21:16.640
network a network show concurrently it was also
00:21:16.640 --> 00:21:18.359
when a bunch of internet forums were popping
00:21:18.359 --> 00:21:20.619
up so people were talking about the show in a
00:21:20.619 --> 00:21:22.640
way that was never done before and it was like
00:21:22.640 --> 00:21:24.920
you go to work the next day everyone watched
00:21:24.920 --> 00:21:29.220
Lost everyone's talking about it and I just remember
00:21:29.220 --> 00:21:35.809
myself and my ex we were like it was just I didn't
00:21:35.809 --> 00:21:39.190
really do much for me personally, but I watched
00:21:39.190 --> 00:21:43.289
it, especially the first couple of seasons. And
00:21:43.289 --> 00:21:45.670
yeah, it was just, it was a really big deal.
00:21:45.730 --> 00:21:48.190
Like it was a really, really, really big deal.
00:21:48.869 --> 00:21:52.150
Yeah. That I, I, one of the things and why I
00:21:52.150 --> 00:21:55.470
guess why I asked that is like that. I love,
00:21:55.490 --> 00:21:58.710
I love, and it's becoming a little bit more prevalent
00:21:58.710 --> 00:22:01.089
now and, and because of the kind of filmmakers
00:22:01.089 --> 00:22:04.359
that are making movies, but. Those early 2000s,
00:22:04.359 --> 00:22:07.460
they are kind of creeping into movies now because
00:22:07.460 --> 00:22:10.940
now it's 20 years ago. Yeah, nostalgia. And it's
00:22:10.940 --> 00:22:13.559
like, which is interesting, it's nostalgia. And
00:22:13.559 --> 00:22:16.880
it's kind of, for me, like, because it is my
00:22:16.880 --> 00:22:19.680
generation that is, and slightly younger, I guess
00:22:19.680 --> 00:22:22.339
Oppenheim, I think is 30 -something or 30. Yeah.
00:22:23.220 --> 00:22:26.900
That sort of 10 -year span is like, I can, that
00:22:26.900 --> 00:22:30.069
nostalgia is like, I was a person. The 90s, I
00:22:30.069 --> 00:22:32.329
mean, yeah, of course I remember the 90s. But
00:22:32.329 --> 00:22:35.470
I wasn't, like, that's, like, I wasn't a person.
00:22:35.789 --> 00:22:37.769
Like, I was, like, fucking, you know what I mean?
00:22:37.910 --> 00:22:42.069
Like, I just, I don't know. So this is a really
00:22:42.069 --> 00:22:45.490
interesting period of time, I think, because
00:22:45.490 --> 00:22:47.589
there's a bunch of movies that are coming out
00:22:47.589 --> 00:22:49.789
that are, like, post, basically, essentially
00:22:49.789 --> 00:22:53.130
post -high school. Sure. For me, anyway. So,
00:22:53.230 --> 00:22:55.869
like, 06, I was. Post high school. And then,
00:22:55.910 --> 00:22:59.069
so your nostalgia, the things that you remember
00:22:59.069 --> 00:23:01.970
are almost like those things like the Fergie
00:23:01.970 --> 00:23:04.650
drop. Yeah. They're like, that just takes you
00:23:04.650 --> 00:23:09.289
back to a very specific time and place where
00:23:09.289 --> 00:23:13.069
you're like, oh, I remember exactly what. I was
00:23:13.069 --> 00:23:15.930
doing, what was happening. Well, the filmmakers
00:23:15.930 --> 00:23:18.990
now are of the age where they're trying to make
00:23:18.990 --> 00:23:22.970
movies about what they were subjected to, good
00:23:22.970 --> 00:23:26.349
or bad, back in the Y2K, just getting out of
00:23:26.349 --> 00:23:28.750
the Y2K era, right? Can we piggyback off this
00:23:28.750 --> 00:23:30.990
a little bit then? Sure. What were people, did
00:23:30.990 --> 00:23:33.670
you watch To Catch a Predator? Was that something
00:23:33.670 --> 00:23:36.390
that people went into the movie knowing a lot
00:23:36.390 --> 00:23:39.349
about? Well, from my memory, and I could be wrong,
00:23:39.410 --> 00:23:42.380
and maybe you can look this up. Sure. When did
00:23:42.380 --> 00:23:45.220
To Catch a Predator start? It was like 05, I
00:23:45.220 --> 00:23:48.759
think. I think it was 05. Or 06. 06, I think.
00:23:48.839 --> 00:23:51.079
It was around like 2005, 2007. Well, 06 is when
00:23:51.079 --> 00:23:53.720
this takes place. Yeah. So they weren't fighting
00:23:53.720 --> 00:23:55.619
for primetime right away. It started in November
00:23:55.619 --> 00:24:00.130
of 2004. Right. And ended in December of 2007.
00:24:00.650 --> 00:24:05.630
2007, yeah. Because where this is, and you kind
00:24:05.630 --> 00:24:08.589
of get that from the movie, that the setup has
00:24:08.589 --> 00:24:12.390
existed, but they're riding this wave. Because
00:24:12.390 --> 00:24:15.549
people like it. That's right. So to answer your
00:24:15.549 --> 00:24:17.589
question for me personally, absolutely, yeah.
00:24:17.690 --> 00:24:23.250
The amount of ads that you saw on syndicated
00:24:23.250 --> 00:24:27.089
television of the next episode and how they would...
00:24:27.440 --> 00:24:30.180
like try to rope you in to watch the next episode.
00:24:30.640 --> 00:24:35.859
The tease is, it was very similar. So there was
00:24:35.859 --> 00:24:38.640
another show, and this is a weird comparison,
00:24:38.799 --> 00:24:41.559
and I just thought of it right now, but it 100
00:24:41.559 --> 00:24:45.019
% is because of the teasers, the way that To
00:24:45.019 --> 00:24:47.700
Catch a Predator would tease you. And the reason
00:24:47.700 --> 00:24:50.400
really why you were watching the show, and they
00:24:50.400 --> 00:24:54.019
get to it in the movie, was what guys were showing
00:24:54.019 --> 00:24:57.109
up and how crazy it was. There was a show that
00:24:57.109 --> 00:25:01.170
came out just before To Catch a Predator that
00:25:01.329 --> 00:25:04.509
is not To Catch a Predator, but was one of the,
00:25:04.549 --> 00:25:06.430
if not the biggest show on television called
00:25:06.430 --> 00:25:10.549
American Idol. And the first couple seasons of
00:25:10.549 --> 00:25:13.049
American Idol, you watched it the same way. You
00:25:13.049 --> 00:25:15.940
weren't watching it. to see who won necessarily.
00:25:16.079 --> 00:25:18.559
That happened way down the line. Those first
00:25:18.559 --> 00:25:21.759
episodes? Oh, yeah. The auditions? It was all
00:25:21.759 --> 00:25:24.660
about the auditions, especially in those early...
00:25:24.660 --> 00:25:28.140
Because essentially, they definitely... It was
00:25:28.140 --> 00:25:32.700
around season, I want to say, five or six that
00:25:32.700 --> 00:25:37.759
the show started to pivot. But because you essentially
00:25:37.759 --> 00:25:42.420
couldn't just openly mock... They were mean in
00:25:42.420 --> 00:25:44.880
the first couple seasons. We'll say mentally
00:25:44.880 --> 00:25:50.279
impaired people. They would choose people that
00:25:50.279 --> 00:25:53.519
were obviously... Just exploit them. Just exploit
00:25:53.519 --> 00:25:57.720
them and openly mock and make fun of them. And
00:25:57.720 --> 00:26:00.099
knowing that the audience was doing the same
00:26:00.099 --> 00:26:02.039
thing. It was funny. I was thinking about She
00:26:02.039 --> 00:26:04.039
Bangs the other day. I was just thinking about
00:26:04.039 --> 00:26:07.559
that the other day. William. Yeah, of course.
00:26:08.059 --> 00:26:12.380
Anyways. But this was part of, to catch a predator
00:26:12.380 --> 00:26:14.880
is exactly, this is the same era. I believe the
00:26:14.880 --> 00:26:17.619
first American Idol was, I want to say, 01 or
00:26:17.619 --> 00:26:20.319
02. Sure, yeah. So it's right around the same
00:26:20.319 --> 00:26:23.279
era. But the interesting point to build onto
00:26:23.279 --> 00:26:24.460
what you were saying. That's why you were watching
00:26:24.460 --> 00:26:26.380
them. Yeah, and to build onto what you were saying,
00:26:26.519 --> 00:26:30.140
people eventually, American Idol got to the point
00:26:30.140 --> 00:26:31.500
where they were like, well, we can't just openly
00:26:31.500 --> 00:26:33.660
mock these people. But then a show came along.
00:26:34.170 --> 00:26:36.670
where he was almost encouraged to openly mock
00:26:36.670 --> 00:26:38.630
the people that they were bringing in, which
00:26:38.630 --> 00:26:40.650
was to catch a predator. Yes. To feel superior
00:26:40.650 --> 00:26:42.809
to the people you see on TV. To feel superior,
00:26:42.849 --> 00:26:45.569
but also you're like, well, this person's here
00:26:45.569 --> 00:26:49.509
for nefarious reasons. Therefore, it's okay to
00:26:49.509 --> 00:26:52.470
essentially do whatever you want. Shame them,
00:26:52.509 --> 00:26:54.849
probably. Shame them, whatever. Which, nuts.
00:26:55.380 --> 00:26:57.980
I would not say it was good or bad. Just saying
00:26:57.980 --> 00:27:01.019
that that was why the show succeeded. And those
00:27:01.019 --> 00:27:04.700
were part of those teasers. So for me, definitely,
00:27:05.019 --> 00:27:08.079
I don't remember necessarily watching a full
00:27:08.079 --> 00:27:12.220
episode probably until... maybe around 05 or
00:27:12.220 --> 00:27:14.940
06 when it started to get bigger. But I remember
00:27:14.940 --> 00:27:18.019
distinctly seeing those ads and seeing those
00:27:18.019 --> 00:27:22.339
stingers on television that would be like, hey,
00:27:22.460 --> 00:27:25.940
check out this crazy guy. I used to go to my
00:27:25.940 --> 00:27:28.059
friend's house and his dad would never miss an
00:27:28.059 --> 00:27:31.019
episode. And it was like, we would sit down and
00:27:31.019 --> 00:27:34.839
we would watch it. And the things I remember
00:27:34.839 --> 00:27:37.259
most distinctly was at the end of the episode.
00:27:37.700 --> 00:27:40.259
is when he was like, next week, this is who we
00:27:40.259 --> 00:27:42.480
have. And then you're like, well, I gotta watch
00:27:42.480 --> 00:27:44.900
next week. Yeah. Did he sit you down to watch
00:27:44.900 --> 00:27:48.920
it? Like, it was like, wake you up out of bed.
00:27:49.079 --> 00:27:51.359
It was usually on. Like if I was at my friends,
00:27:51.380 --> 00:27:52.880
we had dinner or whatever. Sure. It's usually
00:27:52.880 --> 00:27:55.500
on after dinner. We would go, or it's like once
00:27:55.500 --> 00:27:57.799
it got dark, kind of. Yeah. So we'd come back
00:27:57.799 --> 00:27:59.880
in and we just like hang out in the living room
00:27:59.880 --> 00:28:02.779
and his dad would be watching to catch a predator.
00:28:02.839 --> 00:28:06.099
That's interesting. Yeah. I, I kind of I was
00:28:06.099 --> 00:28:09.259
aware of it. I was aware of it around the time
00:28:09.259 --> 00:28:12.799
and I'd watch like the occasional one. And I
00:28:12.799 --> 00:28:16.660
always I it was always in like in the zeitgeist.
00:28:16.660 --> 00:28:18.519
So I kind of knew of it, but I never really paid
00:28:18.519 --> 00:28:21.000
attention to it too much. It wasn't until COVID
00:28:21.000 --> 00:28:23.660
hit that I just ran through everything I could
00:28:23.660 --> 00:28:26.079
find on YouTube about the show and just kept
00:28:26.079 --> 00:28:28.599
going and just watched all of them for that very
00:28:28.599 --> 00:28:31.470
reason. You're just like who like. That's crazy
00:28:31.470 --> 00:28:34.109
that they find all these people and these characters
00:28:34.109 --> 00:28:36.130
that they essentially, these caricatures, really,
00:28:36.269 --> 00:28:40.289
of these people, right? So we do have to cut
00:28:40.289 --> 00:28:42.450
to a commercial break quickly. So we're going
00:28:42.450 --> 00:28:44.569
to jump into this movie after we come back from
00:28:44.569 --> 00:28:49.519
the break. But one word, one word. Did you like
00:28:49.519 --> 00:28:53.640
Primetime? Maddie? Yes. Best movie of the year
00:28:53.640 --> 00:28:54.880
so far. Not one word. It's not one word, but
00:28:54.880 --> 00:29:01.829
that's okay. I said it quick. Okay. Okay. Mine
00:29:01.829 --> 00:29:04.829
is a resounding yes, but we will get into our
00:29:04.829 --> 00:29:06.809
thoughts after the commercial break. Don't go
00:29:06.809 --> 00:29:08.269
anywhere. You're still listening to Outside the
00:29:08.269 --> 00:29:18.579
Frame, London's only movie talk show. 94 .9 Radio
00:29:18.579 --> 00:29:20.960
Western. You are still tuned in to Outside the
00:29:20.960 --> 00:29:23.440
Frame, London's only movie talk show. We are
00:29:23.440 --> 00:29:25.740
in the midst of talking about our thoughts and
00:29:25.740 --> 00:29:29.839
our feelings on the motion picture Primetime
00:29:29.839 --> 00:29:33.059
that just came out, directed by Lance Oppenheim,
00:29:33.099 --> 00:29:36.319
starring Robert Pattinson as Chris Hansen during
00:29:36.319 --> 00:29:40.289
the... height and the prime of To Catch Predator,
00:29:40.410 --> 00:29:44.450
the television show from the mid to late 2000s.
00:29:45.210 --> 00:29:50.240
Before we jump in, just a programming note. Two
00:29:50.240 --> 00:29:53.259
programming notes. Number one, because we didn't
00:29:53.259 --> 00:29:55.500
say it off the top, there is trivia in October.
00:29:55.839 --> 00:29:58.579
There is, yes. It's October 20th, and it's at
00:29:58.579 --> 00:30:01.240
Holy Diver, 8 p .m. to 10 p .m. Secret film the
00:30:01.240 --> 00:30:03.480
week before. Secret film the week before. Yep.
00:30:04.099 --> 00:30:07.650
Also, just as a note, If you're listening to
00:30:07.650 --> 00:30:10.950
this. The last two Trivias, it's been standing
00:30:10.950 --> 00:30:13.009
room only. That's right. So if you show up at
00:30:13.009 --> 00:30:18.130
5 to 8, okay? I'm just going by the last two
00:30:18.130 --> 00:30:20.809
months. Yep. There's a good chance you're not
00:30:20.809 --> 00:30:23.730
sitting down. That's right. So maybe just think
00:30:23.730 --> 00:30:25.349
of it. If you want to come out, we're going to
00:30:25.349 --> 00:30:27.369
have great prizes, all that stuff. It's going
00:30:27.369 --> 00:30:29.289
to be a lot of fun. But anyways, October 20th.
00:30:30.069 --> 00:30:33.069
Also. I'm just doing this on air, but are we
00:30:33.069 --> 00:30:34.710
doing... Yeah, why don't you talk to them? Okay,
00:30:34.809 --> 00:30:36.329
we talked about... So we're going to spend, just
00:30:36.329 --> 00:30:38.049
for the listener, we're going to spend the last
00:30:38.049 --> 00:30:40.869
sort of five -ish minutes talking about the following
00:30:40.869 --> 00:30:44.049
week's episode, which is Dalton's birthday episode.
00:30:44.150 --> 00:30:46.950
So we're going to set that up, which is going
00:30:46.950 --> 00:30:49.349
to be a lot of fun, and I can't wait to figure
00:30:49.349 --> 00:30:53.269
all that out. So that being said, we have about...
00:30:54.369 --> 00:30:57.809
22 -ish minutes to cook on this movie. Yes, which
00:30:57.809 --> 00:30:59.829
I know is going to be very difficult for you,
00:30:59.910 --> 00:31:01.269
Mike, because I know you've got a lot of thoughts
00:31:01.269 --> 00:31:03.769
and feelings about this. I think we all do, though.
00:31:03.769 --> 00:31:06.349
I think we all do. We do. Seeing Maddie coming
00:31:06.349 --> 00:31:08.650
out of the screening at the Highland, I was like,
00:31:08.730 --> 00:31:12.549
oh, man. Maddie was vibing. I was. Buzzing coming
00:31:12.549 --> 00:31:14.910
out of there. I have another Maddie title for
00:31:14.910 --> 00:31:24.950
this one. It was Primo Timo. I want to follow
00:31:24.950 --> 00:31:28.150
up. I didn't quite say before. I had never seen
00:31:28.150 --> 00:31:30.349
an episode of to catch a predator. I know who
00:31:30.349 --> 00:31:32.190
Chris Hansen is through the zeitgeist. Kind of
00:31:32.190 --> 00:31:34.130
like what Elijah was saying before I went into
00:31:34.130 --> 00:31:38.190
this knowing one trailer. I was just like, I
00:31:38.190 --> 00:31:41.390
was saying vibrating for this movie. Like let's
00:31:41.390 --> 00:31:43.809
put aside the story just for a second. The filmmaking
00:31:43.809 --> 00:31:48.609
alone. I was so enthralled by. Agreed. It's so
00:31:48.609 --> 00:31:51.789
well done, but it's also interesting and trying
00:31:51.789 --> 00:31:54.529
new things and utilizing different forms of filmmaking.
00:31:54.750 --> 00:31:56.569
There's a lot of documentary flourishes that
00:31:56.569 --> 00:31:58.170
he's doing. There's a lot of interesting lighting
00:31:58.170 --> 00:32:00.289
choices he's making, like experimental things.
00:32:00.430 --> 00:32:03.990
Shot choices, too. Really, really enjoyed that
00:32:03.990 --> 00:32:08.490
it wasn't shot in your standard. I just love
00:32:08.490 --> 00:32:11.509
the first... five, ten minutes of the movie.
00:32:11.589 --> 00:32:14.829
It's like these great cinematic close -ups and
00:32:14.829 --> 00:32:19.069
you see Creed, you know, and like that whole
00:32:19.069 --> 00:32:21.829
scene in the airplane is just shot so perfectly
00:32:21.829 --> 00:32:26.329
and I love, it's like someone, and it's one of
00:32:26.329 --> 00:32:29.349
the reasons why I love this movie too. It's like
00:32:29.349 --> 00:32:32.369
someone cared. Yeah, it's not your basic set
00:32:32.369 --> 00:32:34.210
down camera on a tripod. Like there's intention
00:32:34.210 --> 00:32:36.869
behind everything that's shot, but it's also
00:32:36.869 --> 00:32:39.150
just in a way that's exciting, but also in a
00:32:39.150 --> 00:32:41.519
way that's like, This movie made me feel a whole
00:32:41.519 --> 00:32:44.259
range of emotions. I was uncomfortable. I was
00:32:44.259 --> 00:32:47.119
laughing. And I kept like I kept like grabbing
00:32:47.119 --> 00:32:49.960
my face while it was happening because I just
00:32:49.960 --> 00:32:52.819
like was in awe of what I was seeing. Yeah, because
00:32:52.819 --> 00:32:55.559
people don't take swings and sometimes it lands
00:32:55.559 --> 00:32:57.819
and sometimes it doesn't. But I appreciate that
00:32:57.819 --> 00:33:00.279
this one landed for me. Yeah, sure. The opening,
00:33:00.380 --> 00:33:05.130
the introduction to. At least the Chris Hansen
00:33:05.130 --> 00:33:07.269
that we see on To Catch a Predator is just...
00:33:07.269 --> 00:33:11.410
It starts from this shot that is shot so below
00:33:11.410 --> 00:33:14.130
him as he appears at the top of the stairs. And
00:33:14.130 --> 00:33:16.549
quite literally almost puts him on this pedestal.
00:33:16.650 --> 00:33:20.529
Or a hero shot. Yes. As one might say. And moves
00:33:20.529 --> 00:33:22.829
slowly down as it follows him. That leads into
00:33:22.829 --> 00:33:26.769
the very, like you said, the cinematic close
00:33:26.769 --> 00:33:29.150
-up of him as he announces his name to the camera.
00:33:29.329 --> 00:33:33.079
Yeah. Just... Unbelievable stuff. From the first
00:33:33.079 --> 00:33:36.640
five to ten minutes, we know that we're off to
00:33:36.640 --> 00:33:39.339
a great start. There was two indicators to me
00:33:39.339 --> 00:33:44.119
that I was like, okay, I'm on board. Let's see
00:33:44.119 --> 00:33:48.039
where this train's going. Number one was I love
00:33:48.039 --> 00:33:50.500
the fact that a good portion of the trailer was
00:33:50.500 --> 00:33:53.460
in the first five minutes of the movie. I'm like,
00:33:53.500 --> 00:33:55.960
that means there was a lot of meat on the bones
00:33:55.960 --> 00:33:58.420
and they weren't going to show you everything.
00:33:59.319 --> 00:34:02.819
So they had enough. to show you, hey, this is
00:34:02.819 --> 00:34:04.440
what the movie is and we're going to hook you
00:34:04.440 --> 00:34:08.760
in. But there's so much more to the film than,
00:34:08.820 --> 00:34:10.960
like, they didn't show you the entire movie.
00:34:10.980 --> 00:34:15.219
Yeah, yeah. And the Fergie drop. Yes. Now, I'm
00:34:15.219 --> 00:34:18.820
not saying that I'm a Fergie fan, but what that
00:34:18.820 --> 00:34:23.500
indicates to me is that someone that's involved,
00:34:24.110 --> 00:34:28.590
Lance in this particular case, has his finger
00:34:28.590 --> 00:34:32.909
on something. Yeah. And that's what that indicated
00:34:32.909 --> 00:34:36.289
to me. It's like, okay, this is what we're doing.
00:34:36.469 --> 00:34:38.710
He's got his finger on the pulse. Yeah, it's
00:34:38.710 --> 00:34:40.309
a sick song. It just keeps its finger on the
00:34:40.309 --> 00:34:41.510
pulse of that time and era. It's one of the most
00:34:41.510 --> 00:34:44.429
annoying things. It's like a mosquito. However,
00:34:44.670 --> 00:34:49.389
that mosquito brings, like you say, I know exactly,
00:34:49.650 --> 00:34:52.329
I know the clothes that were being worn. I know
00:34:52.329 --> 00:34:55.590
where I was. And like I said, to me, it indicates
00:34:55.590 --> 00:34:58.530
a filmmaker that is putting the audience in a
00:34:58.530 --> 00:35:01.090
very particular... That's right. Like he could
00:35:01.090 --> 00:35:03.809
have chosen a lot of different songs, but that
00:35:03.809 --> 00:35:08.090
one really indicates something to me. And so
00:35:08.090 --> 00:35:11.230
those are the two early indicators for me that
00:35:11.230 --> 00:35:14.150
I was like, okay. Yeah. And I like, obviously
00:35:14.150 --> 00:35:15.929
we'll talk about the acting, but I just want
00:35:15.929 --> 00:35:17.949
to say like, I do not know Chris Hansen, the
00:35:17.949 --> 00:35:21.369
person, but I understood Chris Hansen, the character.
00:35:21.369 --> 00:35:23.489
I don't know him either. That Rob Patterson was
00:35:23.489 --> 00:35:25.889
playing though. I understood the character he
00:35:25.889 --> 00:35:28.030
was playing in the movie. Yes. And it worked
00:35:28.030 --> 00:35:30.369
for me. Because I have heard there are people
00:35:30.369 --> 00:35:33.130
that are having different perspectives on how
00:35:33.130 --> 00:35:35.269
the movie is or how they treat certain story
00:35:35.269 --> 00:35:37.130
beats in it. So I think me having a bit of an
00:35:37.130 --> 00:35:39.769
outsider perspective on it made me just see the
00:35:39.769 --> 00:35:42.170
movie as the movie and not bring in some other
00:35:42.170 --> 00:35:45.590
things into it. I do want to open the table because
00:35:45.590 --> 00:35:48.909
somebody does have some opinions as well. which
00:35:48.909 --> 00:35:51.250
you were very much allowed to discuss. Oh, is
00:35:51.250 --> 00:35:54.869
he? I'm not worried about it. Dalton, if you
00:35:54.869 --> 00:35:57.389
wanted to say some stuff. The floor is yours.
00:35:57.869 --> 00:36:03.449
If you want to say some stuff. I had a much different
00:36:03.449 --> 00:36:08.710
reaction than the three of you. This movie didn't
00:36:08.710 --> 00:36:12.510
really do much for me. When it ended, I just
00:36:12.510 --> 00:36:15.929
kind of sat there. I was sitting there thinking
00:36:15.929 --> 00:36:23.679
about it. And then my coworker at the Highland,
00:36:23.719 --> 00:36:25.960
Ronan, came up to me. He goes, so how was it?
00:36:25.980 --> 00:36:29.559
And I just went, I don't know. I don't know.
00:36:29.679 --> 00:36:32.880
And I've had this. It's not like I outwardly
00:36:32.880 --> 00:36:39.119
detested this movie. I had a good time. Pattinson's
00:36:39.119 --> 00:36:44.610
doing weird stuff. I love it. The filmmaking
00:36:44.610 --> 00:36:48.250
is absolutely like. technical incredible right
00:36:48.250 --> 00:36:54.889
um but i am first and foremost most times a story
00:36:54.889 --> 00:37:00.510
person and for this one i felt it was there was
00:37:00.510 --> 00:37:06.070
a lot of flaws for me that made me feel conflicted
00:37:06.070 --> 00:37:07.710
about a lot of things in the movie where i can
00:37:07.710 --> 00:37:11.929
and i've i've talked to mike and maddie and a
00:37:11.929 --> 00:37:13.849
bunch of people on the internet who who are not
00:37:13.849 --> 00:37:16.909
not happy with my my opinions on this movie but
00:37:16.909 --> 00:37:19.539
i I was happy with your opinions because I think
00:37:19.539 --> 00:37:21.519
they're, I think they're a hundred percent valid
00:37:21.519 --> 00:37:24.769
in the sense of like, in the sense that your
00:37:24.769 --> 00:37:27.289
critiques, I don't think are incorrect. Like
00:37:27.289 --> 00:37:29.289
they're, they're not, they're not coming from
00:37:29.289 --> 00:37:32.849
like left field or like some other, other like
00:37:32.849 --> 00:37:35.070
weird place or whatever. I keep finding myself,
00:37:35.150 --> 00:37:40.139
I do this because when I left the movie, I felt
00:37:40.139 --> 00:37:43.719
unsatisfied was the word I use. And I said, I
00:37:43.719 --> 00:37:48.300
don't know why. And I started to, like peel it
00:37:48.300 --> 00:37:50.820
apart and look for what was it that didn't grab
00:37:50.820 --> 00:37:53.539
me or what was it that I felt like I didn't get
00:37:53.539 --> 00:37:56.800
out of that movie which has made me start to
00:37:56.800 --> 00:38:00.059
do a form of film criticism that I hate so I'm
00:38:00.059 --> 00:38:03.679
like I'm contradicting my normal self which is
00:38:03.679 --> 00:38:06.360
I started judging the movie for what it isn't
00:38:06.360 --> 00:38:11.300
rather than what it is right and I but I keep
00:38:11.300 --> 00:38:13.199
catching myself doing that and I'm saying it's
00:38:13.199 --> 00:38:16.460
because I think I'm going what wasn't there that
00:38:16.460 --> 00:38:20.659
I feel like I didn't get, you know? So I'm trying
00:38:20.659 --> 00:38:22.659
to, like, avoid doing that, where I go, like,
00:38:22.739 --> 00:38:24.760
well, I wished it did this. I wished it did this.
00:38:24.880 --> 00:38:27.239
Well, one of the things that, I mean, we spoke
00:38:27.239 --> 00:38:29.119
briefly about it when we were talking about it,
00:38:29.139 --> 00:38:35.309
but, like, I guess for me, what my reading on
00:38:35.309 --> 00:38:38.309
the film, and I guess why I didn't feel that,
00:38:38.369 --> 00:38:42.900
I felt actually... So I love like this movie
00:38:42.900 --> 00:38:46.559
is perfectly bookended and I love the way that
00:38:46.559 --> 00:38:50.739
that the story plays out because I didn't really
00:38:50.739 --> 00:38:53.960
look at and maybe it was just me or just my mindset
00:38:53.960 --> 00:38:57.440
or whatever. But I think what. the movie was
00:38:57.440 --> 00:38:59.840
informing me is that this movie is not really
00:38:59.840 --> 00:39:03.460
about Chris Hansen. And the, the character that
00:39:03.460 --> 00:39:06.460
I followed or that I identified with was actually,
00:39:06.519 --> 00:39:12.360
um, the decoy Dan. And, and because that's the
00:39:12.360 --> 00:39:16.099
character that has the, the, the ups and the
00:39:16.099 --> 00:39:18.400
downs and, and, and a journey that you can follow.
00:39:18.539 --> 00:39:22.449
Not to say that. that Chris doesn't, Chris Hansen's
00:39:22.449 --> 00:39:24.769
character doesn't, but it's, it's, they're working
00:39:24.769 --> 00:39:28.110
in tandem. And if you look at the, again, the
00:39:28.110 --> 00:39:32.469
way, if, if you just focused on, on, on Pattinson's
00:39:32.469 --> 00:39:36.090
care, like on the characters, like his, his arc,
00:39:36.269 --> 00:39:40.599
I could, I can absolutely like agree with you
00:39:40.599 --> 00:39:44.639
in, in some respects. But to me, like the, the
00:39:44.639 --> 00:39:47.699
movie essentially kicks off. I mean, aside from
00:39:47.699 --> 00:39:51.449
like literally the, I mean, you can call it a,
00:39:51.469 --> 00:39:53.469
I don't know what you want to call the opening
00:39:53.469 --> 00:39:56.570
of that movie, but the setup or whatever. But
00:39:56.570 --> 00:39:59.550
really, it's the audition that really is where
00:39:59.550 --> 00:40:02.349
the movie starts. Where the movie ends before
00:40:02.349 --> 00:40:06.230
the denouement is, again, Decoy Dan's story,
00:40:06.389 --> 00:40:10.369
right? And those two moments are perfect. Well,
00:40:10.369 --> 00:40:14.349
even the denouement is. Is his, yes. But those
00:40:14.349 --> 00:40:18.570
two moments are perfectly bookended with the
00:40:18.570 --> 00:40:23.530
use of the red song. And so to me, I guess that's
00:40:23.530 --> 00:40:25.329
the way that I looked at it. That's all I'm saying
00:40:25.329 --> 00:40:27.750
is that for me, I looked at it that way. I viewed
00:40:27.750 --> 00:40:30.329
a lot of the same things you did. To me, that
00:40:30.329 --> 00:40:33.190
was, I mean, he's the best part of that movie
00:40:33.190 --> 00:40:36.329
in my opinion. He's fantastic. He's really good.
00:40:36.449 --> 00:40:39.829
Everyone is strong in this movie. There's not
00:40:39.829 --> 00:40:41.530
a single weak performance in this movie. They're
00:40:41.530 --> 00:40:44.829
making big choices. And it could have like, I'll
00:40:44.829 --> 00:40:47.469
say this. It could have went really wrong. Yeah.
00:40:47.510 --> 00:40:50.590
Like really wrong. And if it wasn't Pattinson,
00:40:50.730 --> 00:40:53.590
if it was like, it could have been just an hour,
00:40:53.630 --> 00:40:57.590
48 minute, like SNL caricature. Yeah. Yeah. Right.
00:40:57.769 --> 00:41:00.849
Instead of this really, even if like, I know
00:41:00.849 --> 00:41:04.369
mileage may vary as they say, but like, I think
00:41:04.369 --> 00:41:07.750
you'd agree that this movie is at least worth
00:41:07.750 --> 00:41:11.900
thinking about. It's a conversation starter,
00:41:11.900 --> 00:41:13.960
that's for sure. And it's a conversation piece
00:41:13.960 --> 00:41:16.179
in the sense of, like, there's a lot of interesting
00:41:16.179 --> 00:41:19.679
things in this movie to talk about, and he hits
00:41:19.679 --> 00:41:22.000
on a lot of really interesting themes, right?
00:41:22.179 --> 00:41:25.920
So, like, even mileage, like, you still, like,
00:41:25.960 --> 00:41:28.510
it's not a one -star movie for you. No. I gave
00:41:28.510 --> 00:41:31.030
it three. So why I wanted to say this is just
00:41:31.030 --> 00:41:32.889
for the audience. It's not like Dalton's sitting
00:41:32.889 --> 00:41:35.070
here being like, this is the worst movie of the
00:41:35.070 --> 00:41:37.550
year. Maddie has seen this from me many times.
00:41:37.550 --> 00:41:40.090
Yeah, we were talking about this. Which is, when
00:41:40.440 --> 00:41:44.559
I can't fully crack what's eating at me in a
00:41:44.559 --> 00:41:48.199
movie, I get weirdly somber about it. I know,
00:41:48.260 --> 00:41:50.260
and I kind of have to be like, it's okay, bud.
00:41:50.760 --> 00:41:54.179
But I have to keep going until I have formed
00:41:54.469 --> 00:41:59.789
a full opinion. I just get angry, dude. I know.
00:42:00.670 --> 00:42:06.929
Different, different. A lot of my qualms were
00:42:06.929 --> 00:42:09.969
I found, and this goes back again to the way
00:42:09.969 --> 00:42:13.010
I keep saying, I keep judging the movie for what
00:42:13.010 --> 00:42:16.010
it isn't instead of what it is. I found there's
00:42:16.010 --> 00:42:18.050
a lot of threads in this movie that he introduces
00:42:18.050 --> 00:42:20.710
and doesn't follow through on that I thought
00:42:20.710 --> 00:42:22.650
could have been much more interesting than the
00:42:22.650 --> 00:42:25.730
things that were in the movie. Which, again.
00:42:26.199 --> 00:42:29.800
That's not really a fair criticism. I think it's
00:42:29.800 --> 00:42:32.559
partly fair because it's because those elements
00:42:32.559 --> 00:42:35.719
are introduced in the film. Right. But he, as
00:42:35.719 --> 00:42:38.400
the filmmaker, has chosen to go a different direction.
00:42:38.739 --> 00:42:41.699
And it's me watching it. I just like, well, I
00:42:41.699 --> 00:42:44.159
don't feel this is the right direction. I kind
00:42:44.159 --> 00:42:46.980
of think you're right. Yeah. Like, do you know
00:42:46.980 --> 00:42:49.079
what I mean? But I can't I don't know what that
00:42:49.079 --> 00:42:51.480
movie looks like. Do you know what I mean? Yeah,
00:42:51.480 --> 00:42:54.519
exactly. And it's. Like because the things I
00:42:54.519 --> 00:42:56.420
mean, maybe you can point out maybe one or two
00:42:56.420 --> 00:42:58.719
examples, because the couple of things that you
00:42:58.719 --> 00:43:00.980
were saying to me, I actually I was like, well,
00:43:01.039 --> 00:43:02.579
yeah, I'd like to see that. Yeah, I can probably.
00:43:02.639 --> 00:43:07.179
I mean, like the two the two biggest like instead
00:43:07.179 --> 00:43:10.400
of just listing off a bunch. Right. The two that
00:43:10.400 --> 00:43:13.219
stood out to me was, I mean, as much as I think,
00:43:13.219 --> 00:43:16.599
like you said, Skylar Gisondo storyline was the
00:43:16.599 --> 00:43:20.070
strongest part of that film. They introduced
00:43:20.070 --> 00:43:22.110
a few concepts at the beginning with him and
00:43:22.110 --> 00:43:25.409
his friend slash acting coach, whatever their
00:43:25.409 --> 00:43:28.469
relationship is, where they touch on an almost
00:43:28.469 --> 00:43:32.210
predatory aspect of it. I don't want to give
00:43:32.210 --> 00:43:34.690
away too many details in the movie, but there's
00:43:34.690 --> 00:43:38.369
a phone call where maybe he says a few unwarranted
00:43:38.369 --> 00:43:41.289
sexual things that are kind of played off like,
00:43:41.369 --> 00:43:44.110
oh, I'm joking. But he introduces that notion
00:43:44.110 --> 00:43:49.239
and then we don't really... expand on that any
00:43:49.239 --> 00:43:50.940
further which is okay because he's touched on
00:43:50.940 --> 00:43:54.559
the notion but I'm like this is a very interesting
00:43:54.559 --> 00:43:57.199
thing that you've just introduced that you have
00:43:57.199 --> 00:44:00.019
not followed through and the other one which
00:44:00.019 --> 00:44:03.179
is a recurring theme that isn't explored very
00:44:03.179 --> 00:44:09.559
deeply is the the war on terror is going on during
00:44:09.559 --> 00:44:13.239
this era and they keep showing you see pictures
00:44:13.239 --> 00:44:16.710
of Saddam Hussein several times you see them
00:44:16.710 --> 00:44:19.210
watching the news and coverage of Afghanistan.
00:44:19.750 --> 00:44:23.230
Stone Phillips. Stone Phillips, exactly. And
00:44:23.260 --> 00:44:29.139
it's... Mike talked about this off -air, about
00:44:29.139 --> 00:44:33.869
in the film, Hansen's desire to be Stone Phillips
00:44:33.869 --> 00:44:38.070
in this movie, right? And I agree that that's
00:44:38.070 --> 00:44:40.630
absolutely something that Hansen wants for himself.
00:44:41.130 --> 00:44:44.809
But in the film, this idea of comparing the...
00:44:45.420 --> 00:44:49.340
fascination of seeing war on TV and this, the
00:44:49.340 --> 00:44:54.099
post nine 11 mass media consumption and the morbid
00:44:54.099 --> 00:44:57.360
side of that is a major element that I think
00:44:57.360 --> 00:45:00.639
this film could do a lot with. Right. And it
00:45:00.639 --> 00:45:05.320
briefly touches on it. It almost feels like not
00:45:05.320 --> 00:45:08.079
confident enough to go all the way with that
00:45:08.079 --> 00:45:10.760
idea. And that's what I felt. Some of these ideas
00:45:10.760 --> 00:45:15.710
felt like he, he didn't want to go like, I don't
00:45:15.710 --> 00:45:17.889
know if it was a hesitation to go there or not.
00:45:18.030 --> 00:45:20.429
And I was thinking about it earlier today, and
00:45:20.429 --> 00:45:23.210
I think he comes from a documentary background.
00:45:23.530 --> 00:45:27.469
Right. And a lot of times in documentary, it's
00:45:27.469 --> 00:45:36.489
not about sort of, I mean, sometimes it is, but
00:45:36.489 --> 00:45:39.630
about guiding an audience to a point. It's more
00:45:39.630 --> 00:45:43.050
like. where you have to act as a fly -on -the
00:45:43.050 --> 00:45:45.070
-wall observer. It depends on capturing that
00:45:45.070 --> 00:45:47.929
moment. Exactly. And then you figure that out
00:45:47.929 --> 00:45:53.019
later. And to me, it felt more like the film
00:45:53.019 --> 00:45:57.179
was dramatizations of events. I mean, extreme
00:45:57.179 --> 00:46:00.500
dramatizations a lot of times, but rather than
00:46:00.500 --> 00:46:06.619
a story, like a genuine, like the way narrative
00:46:06.619 --> 00:46:10.070
films breathe. So I don't know if it's just...
00:46:10.309 --> 00:46:14.070
It's not what I'm used to and it's not what I
00:46:14.070 --> 00:46:18.510
expect out of a story that kept me that kept
00:46:18.510 --> 00:46:21.610
me at a distance. Those are my main things. But
00:46:21.610 --> 00:46:23.869
I said I do have a lot of positives on the movie,
00:46:23.909 --> 00:46:25.730
too. And it's a lot of things you already mentioned.
00:46:25.829 --> 00:46:30.289
The movie looks incredible. It's edited in an
00:46:30.289 --> 00:46:33.070
incredible way. Yeah. Everybody in it's great.
00:46:33.190 --> 00:46:37.269
I just think my problems come from more conceptual
00:46:37.269 --> 00:46:42.050
ideas of the movie. I think for me and listeners
00:46:42.050 --> 00:46:44.150
of the show slash the people around this table
00:46:44.150 --> 00:46:48.130
will know, if there's like, especially with pop
00:46:48.130 --> 00:46:52.869
culture or filmmaking, acting, when a film touches
00:46:52.869 --> 00:46:56.409
on that and the darker side of that with pop
00:46:56.409 --> 00:47:00.570
culture, basically what it comes down to is like,
00:47:00.630 --> 00:47:03.289
what are you willing to sacrifice for art and
00:47:03.289 --> 00:47:07.710
for... That is a really big hook for me. So...
00:47:08.150 --> 00:47:10.530
That's why things like The Substance really works
00:47:10.530 --> 00:47:14.710
for me. Something like Tatane really works on
00:47:14.710 --> 00:47:18.610
me in a lot of ways. This idea of obsession and
00:47:18.610 --> 00:47:24.409
figuring, all of that stuff. Specifically, obviously,
00:47:24.550 --> 00:47:28.510
most recently, The Substance is a very similar,
00:47:28.650 --> 00:47:35.150
we'll say, journey as Decoy Dan. He gets what
00:47:35.150 --> 00:47:37.860
he wants at the end. Same with Demi Moore in
00:47:37.860 --> 00:47:39.780
The Substance. But at what cost. But at what
00:47:39.780 --> 00:47:44.320
cost. And that premise is just always something
00:47:44.320 --> 00:47:47.800
that I'm going to be interested in. And I do
00:47:47.800 --> 00:47:50.500
love, you know, I'm conflicted on this because
00:47:50.500 --> 00:47:53.800
on one hand, I really wish this movie would play
00:47:53.800 --> 00:47:58.780
in a wider demographic for capitalistic reasons
00:47:58.780 --> 00:48:01.639
because of where I work and the amount of sacrifices
00:48:01.639 --> 00:48:05.280
I had to make and we had to make to get the movie
00:48:05.280 --> 00:48:08.250
to the Highland. However, the movie definitely
00:48:08.250 --> 00:48:14.030
is not as wide in terms of the demographic because
00:48:14.030 --> 00:48:17.409
of the darkness of the movie. Yeah. And because
00:48:17.409 --> 00:48:20.929
it's not your typical, it's not a biopic. I wouldn't
00:48:20.929 --> 00:48:23.210
really call this movie. No, I wouldn't either.
00:48:23.960 --> 00:48:25.320
It's like a movie that has... It's like a fever
00:48:25.320 --> 00:48:28.519
dream. Yeah. It's a very sensationalized version
00:48:28.519 --> 00:48:31.840
of... It might as well be a fictional, like a
00:48:31.840 --> 00:48:33.880
fiction, non -fiction retelling, you know? One
00:48:33.880 --> 00:48:36.599
note, just to piggyback off that, was one of
00:48:36.599 --> 00:48:39.820
my biggest things about this movie was I found
00:48:39.820 --> 00:48:42.739
the real life Hansen more interesting than the
00:48:42.739 --> 00:48:45.019
version they presented in the movie, which again...
00:48:45.360 --> 00:48:47.599
is not a fair criticism because that's not the
00:48:47.599 --> 00:48:49.940
version we're getting. But it's hard to ignore
00:48:49.940 --> 00:48:52.139
for me. I actually really enjoyed the aspect
00:48:52.139 --> 00:48:55.179
and the way they approached him in this one because
00:48:55.179 --> 00:48:58.800
I feel it was... perfectly fitting for a show
00:48:58.800 --> 00:49:01.980
like to catch a predator as sensationalist as
00:49:01.980 --> 00:49:05.699
it was and as um hyperbolic as that show was
00:49:05.699 --> 00:49:08.639
i felt it was fitting to match the man who is
00:49:08.639 --> 00:49:10.699
the face of that show and ran that show to be
00:49:10.699 --> 00:49:13.420
as sensationalist and as hyperbolic as possible
00:49:13.420 --> 00:49:15.320
i thought that was actually a good touch rather
00:49:15.320 --> 00:49:17.420
than it being like a straight down the line uh
00:49:17.420 --> 00:49:21.039
performance and and depiction of who he really
00:49:21.039 --> 00:49:22.960
was as a person and see where i i always found
00:49:22.960 --> 00:49:25.920
it more interesting that the show was like that,
00:49:26.000 --> 00:49:28.860
but he wasn't. And he was like a stone cold psychopath
00:49:28.860 --> 00:49:31.059
with like completely indifferent to the things
00:49:31.059 --> 00:49:33.139
around him. Well, this touches on another thing
00:49:33.139 --> 00:49:38.099
that I always, I love in film, in all art really,
00:49:38.219 --> 00:49:41.280
but specifically in film because I think it does
00:49:41.280 --> 00:49:45.679
the best, you get the most out of it in my opinion,
00:49:45.780 --> 00:49:50.920
but where there's not really, the whole movie
00:49:50.920 --> 00:49:54.510
is morally gray at best. The characters are all
00:49:54.510 --> 00:49:59.170
morally gray at best. And the idea of like, what
00:49:59.170 --> 00:50:03.670
is a hero and what is a villain? A lot of the
00:50:03.670 --> 00:50:08.090
lines are blurred. And to do that successfully
00:50:08.090 --> 00:50:13.530
in a movie where the line should be so clear
00:50:13.530 --> 00:50:20.230
is so interesting to me. And I think, and again,
00:50:20.289 --> 00:50:24.519
that's just a theme. For me, that is I'm always
00:50:24.519 --> 00:50:27.559
going to be interested in is morally gray people
00:50:27.559 --> 00:50:31.199
and morally gray characters, morally gray artists.
00:50:31.860 --> 00:50:34.800
That's just that's that's what that's always
00:50:34.800 --> 00:50:37.519
going to pique my interest. So to have a whole
00:50:37.519 --> 00:50:40.639
movie that is, again, probably another reason
00:50:40.639 --> 00:50:44.099
why this movie isn't touching on more demographics
00:50:44.099 --> 00:50:48.360
is because of its it because if it was a straight
00:50:48.360 --> 00:50:51.079
up. And I'm not going to use this lightly, but
00:50:51.079 --> 00:50:53.719
straight up Angel Studios, Sound of Freedom.
00:50:53.880 --> 00:50:58.139
Chris Hansen is the hero of the movie. This movie
00:50:58.139 --> 00:51:01.059
would be much more widely accepted and probably
00:51:01.059 --> 00:51:04.179
would do better at the box office. But the movie
00:51:04.179 --> 00:51:06.539
is not interested in that. And the filmmaker
00:51:06.539 --> 00:51:08.579
is not interested in that. That's what makes
00:51:08.579 --> 00:51:11.800
me interested in the movie and why so far it's
00:51:11.800 --> 00:51:14.320
my favorite movie of the year, because it does
00:51:14.320 --> 00:51:19.369
have the juice to attack those kind of. themes
00:51:19.369 --> 00:51:21.969
that are really difficult to attack and you need
00:51:21.969 --> 00:51:25.250
an art form like filmmaking to do all that because
00:51:25.250 --> 00:51:28.889
you need all the tools at your hands to to bring
00:51:28.889 --> 00:51:30.969
it all together bring it all together he did
00:51:30.969 --> 00:51:32.510
it in a way that you could only tell the story
00:51:32.510 --> 00:51:34.610
through a movie and that's one of my favorite
00:51:34.610 --> 00:51:37.289
parts of filmmaking absolutely why this wasn't
00:51:37.289 --> 00:51:39.230
a book why this wasn't you know it's Because
00:51:39.230 --> 00:51:41.510
of the visual medium, it really heightens the
00:51:41.510 --> 00:51:44.150
experience for me. This is not a movie for everybody.
00:51:44.429 --> 00:51:45.849
I think a lot of people are going to struggle
00:51:45.849 --> 00:51:47.050
with it. I think a lot of people are going to
00:51:47.050 --> 00:51:49.530
be very uncomfortable watching it. So know what
00:51:49.530 --> 00:51:51.550
you're getting into if you do choose to watch
00:51:51.550 --> 00:51:54.110
it. But I do think it is worth watching. It's
00:51:54.110 --> 00:51:56.630
a strong recommend from my side of the table
00:51:56.630 --> 00:51:58.929
over here. Or at least from three of us. Would
00:51:58.929 --> 00:52:03.619
you recommend people watch it? You can. You can.
00:52:03.780 --> 00:52:06.219
I don't say you have to rush out and see it.
00:52:06.239 --> 00:52:08.760
Fair enough. I don't recommend you should see
00:52:08.760 --> 00:52:12.039
anything. I would say go and watch what you want
00:52:12.039 --> 00:52:13.460
to watch. If it sounds interesting, go see it.
00:52:13.460 --> 00:52:16.059
And if it sounds interesting, go and see it.
00:52:16.559 --> 00:52:19.219
Yeah. Nah, I'm going to say go see it. But with
00:52:19.219 --> 00:52:21.519
that being said, we have a few minutes left in
00:52:21.519 --> 00:52:26.750
our day, in our time here. Squeaky ass chair.
00:52:27.070 --> 00:52:31.829
For you to take the reins for your episode, for
00:52:31.829 --> 00:52:33.630
your birthday episode next week. Pike's Picks.
00:52:33.750 --> 00:52:40.909
Pike's Picks. Exactly. So, next week, the plan
00:52:40.909 --> 00:52:45.369
is, actually, right now, what the plan is, is
00:52:45.369 --> 00:52:48.349
I am going to... You're going to give us some
00:52:48.349 --> 00:52:50.110
assignments? I'm going to give each of you a
00:52:50.110 --> 00:52:54.530
film from my personal collection. It's my favorite
00:52:54.530 --> 00:52:59.039
kind of homework. That I think it's tailored
00:52:59.039 --> 00:53:00.840
to all of you specifically. It's a movie that
00:53:00.840 --> 00:53:05.300
I think you will enjoy. And then the plan next
00:53:05.300 --> 00:53:08.019
week is almost like a little director's chair
00:53:08.019 --> 00:53:10.420
style thing, which is. I've seen all Russ Meyer's
00:53:10.420 --> 00:53:13.940
movies. Okay. And that was the other thing. I
00:53:13.940 --> 00:53:16.699
tried to pick movies that I thought you hadn't
00:53:16.699 --> 00:53:18.099
seen. That's why we're going to do this now.
00:53:18.119 --> 00:53:21.639
So what I'm doing is, Maddie, I know you haven't
00:53:21.639 --> 00:53:23.820
seen this one. Because I use a watch list. She
00:53:23.820 --> 00:53:27.119
uses a watch list. And then I have. One for each
00:53:27.119 --> 00:53:29.019
of you and a backup in case you have seen it.
00:53:29.039 --> 00:53:32.239
Okay. But next week we'll do a discussion where
00:53:32.239 --> 00:53:35.039
we'll take about 15 minutes each and we'll talk
00:53:35.039 --> 00:53:36.599
about it and we'll kind of talk about it for
00:53:36.599 --> 00:53:38.960
the other people who maybe haven't seen it. And
00:53:38.960 --> 00:53:41.659
I think it'll be a fun discussion. So we'll start
00:53:41.659 --> 00:53:43.139
with Maddie because she's got one option. Yeah,
00:53:43.139 --> 00:53:48.010
I'm the easy one. That would be... David Lean's...
00:53:48.010 --> 00:53:51.369
Whoa, whoa, whoa. What? Dalton's bringing out
00:53:51.369 --> 00:53:54.010
physical media. Physical media, yes. On the show.
00:53:54.090 --> 00:53:55.769
I should have, yes. Criterion. Well, as I said,
00:53:55.869 --> 00:53:57.829
I brought them from my personal collection. Okay.
00:53:57.829 --> 00:53:59.389
Well, you said there's movies from your personal
00:53:59.389 --> 00:54:01.809
collection. Yeah, I brought them. So we have
00:54:01.809 --> 00:54:04.349
to watch them. And then you're entrusting us
00:54:04.349 --> 00:54:07.070
with this. So this is David Lean's Summertime.
00:54:07.170 --> 00:54:09.429
I almost watched this in the past, like, six
00:54:09.429 --> 00:54:13.059
months. I'm glad you didn't. How much time do
00:54:13.059 --> 00:54:14.320
we have? Do you want to read what it says on
00:54:14.320 --> 00:54:15.239
the back? We've got four minutes. Yes, just read
00:54:15.239 --> 00:54:17.159
what's on the back. With the sublime, bittersweet
00:54:17.159 --> 00:54:19.320
tale of romantic longing, director David Lean
00:54:19.320 --> 00:54:21.119
left behind the British soundstage to capture
00:54:21.119 --> 00:54:24.539
in Radiant Technicolor the sun -splashed glory
00:54:24.539 --> 00:54:26.699
of Venice at the height of summer. It's a tour
00:54:26.699 --> 00:54:29.099
de force of fearless vulnerability. I don't know.
00:54:29.099 --> 00:54:33.260
This is long, but it's a Catherine Hepburn. and
00:54:33.260 --> 00:54:37.260
she is a lonely middle -aged tourist from America,
00:54:37.340 --> 00:54:39.940
and she meets up with an Italian shopkeeper.
00:54:40.159 --> 00:54:43.199
Yes. And directed by the man who brought you
00:54:43.199 --> 00:54:47.219
Lawrence of Arabia, Dr. Zhivago. Check the runtime
00:54:47.219 --> 00:54:50.039
on that, would you? It's not bad. It's not bad.
00:54:50.119 --> 00:54:54.840
340. It's 100 minutes. Oh, perfect. Not at all.
00:54:54.840 --> 00:54:58.019
Four hours, 39 minutes. Don brought me War and
00:54:58.019 --> 00:55:05.750
Peace. I did that before. Michael. Yes. For your
00:55:05.750 --> 00:55:08.730
viewing pleasure. For your homework. Now, do
00:55:08.730 --> 00:55:11.369
we feel like I should just hand you my first
00:55:11.369 --> 00:55:13.590
pick and then you say, or should I hand you two
00:55:13.590 --> 00:55:15.610
of them? No, no, no. Do one at a time. Yeah,
00:55:15.630 --> 00:55:18.449
I gotta do the first one. I'll be honest with
00:55:18.449 --> 00:55:21.889
you if I've seen it. Okay. 100%. This is a movie
00:55:21.889 --> 00:55:25.269
that I think you will quite enjoy. And this one
00:55:25.269 --> 00:55:27.250
I was uncertain if you had seen, but I didn't
00:55:27.250 --> 00:55:29.309
think you had. I brought Money Train to you,
00:55:29.309 --> 00:55:32.190
dude. You did. This is a movie I know Maddie
00:55:32.190 --> 00:55:35.869
likes quite a bit. That would be Peter Bogdanovich's
00:55:35.869 --> 00:55:40.250
Targets. I have not seen this movie. Okay. So
00:55:40.250 --> 00:55:42.789
this, maybe rather than having people read them,
00:55:42.829 --> 00:55:44.150
I should kind of give you a little bit about
00:55:44.150 --> 00:55:49.150
what it is. This is sort of the response to horror
00:55:49.150 --> 00:55:54.090
movies, and it features Boris Karloff. Yes. Features
00:55:54.090 --> 00:56:00.630
Peter Bogdanovich and a young fella who has an
00:56:00.630 --> 00:56:03.869
obsession with his rifle and takes it to the
00:56:03.869 --> 00:56:06.980
streets. You spoke about this movie in the previous
00:56:06.980 --> 00:56:09.380
episode, the You and Maddie episode. I think
00:56:09.380 --> 00:56:10.519
I spoke about this movie. I think Maddie spoke
00:56:10.519 --> 00:56:12.599
about it, yes. Because Dalton told me to watch
00:56:12.599 --> 00:56:15.900
it. A clean 90 minutes. Yes, it is. It's a clean
00:56:15.900 --> 00:56:18.500
90. That's why I knew Mike would like it. But
00:56:18.500 --> 00:56:21.420
yeah, this has a lot of, I mean, again, we just
00:56:21.420 --> 00:56:25.260
pointed out, it's about, it takes place in new
00:56:25.260 --> 00:56:28.579
Hollywood horror, real life horror, has some
00:56:28.579 --> 00:56:30.739
really dark ideas in it. I'm not going to spoil
00:56:30.739 --> 00:56:35.929
it. And yeah. This looks fantastic. It's new
00:56:35.929 --> 00:56:37.570
Hollywood meets old Hollywood. First one he directed.
00:56:37.570 --> 00:56:39.650
First movie he ever made. Wow. Which is insane.
00:56:39.849 --> 00:56:43.550
And it's crazy. Elijah, we're going out there
00:56:43.550 --> 00:56:46.309
for you. That's my favorite thing to hear. Because...
00:56:46.309 --> 00:56:51.570
I love going out there. You and I, we saw a film
00:56:51.789 --> 00:56:53.309
together earlier this year, and I know that you
00:56:53.309 --> 00:56:56.650
like Asian films. I sure do. And I know that
00:56:56.650 --> 00:57:01.309
you're not as experienced with some older movies.
00:57:01.550 --> 00:57:04.269
That's right. Now... This one, I don't know if
00:57:04.269 --> 00:57:07.690
anyone here besides myself has seen this, but
00:57:07.690 --> 00:57:10.030
I felt it was a movie that you would like because
00:57:10.030 --> 00:57:14.349
it's a Japanese movie. It's super cool. It's
00:57:14.349 --> 00:57:17.550
artistic, and it's out there. And that would
00:57:17.550 --> 00:57:21.510
be Seijin Suzuki's Branded to Kill. That's such
00:57:21.510 --> 00:57:27.829
a sick name. This is like pop art, sort of black
00:57:27.829 --> 00:57:31.730
and white, endlessly cool, endlessly badass.
00:57:34.320 --> 00:57:37.400
If this would be your first Seijin Suzuki movie,
00:57:37.599 --> 00:57:40.619
I don't want to say too much, but I think you
00:57:40.619 --> 00:57:42.219
are going to like it. Do you mind if I just read
00:57:42.219 --> 00:57:44.059
the first sentence for everybody? Absolutely.
00:57:44.340 --> 00:57:46.739
How do you pronounce his name? Seijin Suzuki.
00:57:47.139 --> 00:57:49.960
Seijin Suzuki. Okay. When Japanese new wave bad
00:57:49.960 --> 00:57:53.239
boy, Seijin Suzuki, delivered this brutal, hilarious,
00:57:53.320 --> 00:57:55.960
and visually inspired masterpiece to the executives
00:57:55.960 --> 00:57:59.190
at his studio. He was promptly fired. Let's go.
00:57:59.750 --> 00:58:02.929
No better hook. Yeah. I am sold. He handed that
00:58:02.929 --> 00:58:05.769
movie in and they fired him immediately. I love
00:58:05.769 --> 00:58:08.429
it. I'm so hyped. Yeah. So those are the movies
00:58:08.429 --> 00:58:11.269
for your homework. Okay. I want to watch all
00:58:11.269 --> 00:58:13.710
these. And that's the thing. I also figured I
00:58:13.710 --> 00:58:15.309
could do this. You have a week. If you wanted
00:58:15.309 --> 00:58:18.469
to see the other movies here, then you had time
00:58:18.469 --> 00:58:20.829
to do that. It's fantastic. I'm really looking
00:58:20.829 --> 00:58:22.829
forward to this. Thank you so much. Yes. Great
00:58:22.829 --> 00:58:25.570
homework. Yeah. And thank you to everybody listening
00:58:25.570 --> 00:58:28.849
for listening. to another episode of Outside
00:58:28.849 --> 00:58:30.989
the Frame, London's only movie talk show. My
00:58:30.989 --> 00:58:33.050
name's Elijah. I'm Maddie. I'm Mike. I'm Dalton.
00:58:33.090 --> 00:58:34.989
And we will see you all next week. Take care
00:58:34.989 --> 00:58:36.210
of yourselves. Until then.
