00:00:01.199 --> 00:00:03.680
Welcome to Five Good Minutes.
00:00:03.919 --> 00:00:10.560
You're listening to today's inspirational message on the book of Genesis with Brady Randall.
00:00:11.759 --> 00:00:16.320
Well, jealousy and revenge can cause us to do some crazy things.
00:00:16.640 --> 00:00:24.960
Envy, bitterness, and jealousy left unchecked, can absolutely devastate and be deadly.
00:00:25.199 --> 00:00:27.600
And we see that play out in Genesis 37.
00:00:28.000 --> 00:00:31.359
This is what we read in verses twelve through nineteen.
00:00:32.079 --> 00:00:36.000
Now his brothers had gone to graze their father's flocks near Shechem.
00:00:36.079 --> 00:00:41.200
And Israel said to Joseph, As you know, your brothers are grazing the flocks near Shechem.
00:00:41.679 --> 00:00:43.920
Come, I am going to send you to them.
00:00:44.159 --> 00:00:51.359
Very well he replied, so he said to him, Go and see if all is well with your brothers and with the flocks, and bring word back to me.
00:00:51.600 --> 00:00:54.000
Then he sent them off from the valley of Hebron.
00:00:54.560 --> 00:01:01.359
When Joseph arrived at Shechem, a man found him wandering around in the fields and asked him, What are you looking for?
00:01:01.600 --> 00:01:04.000
He replied, I'm looking for my brothers.
00:01:04.319 --> 00:01:06.879
Can you tell me where they are grazing their flocks?
00:01:07.120 --> 00:01:09.280
They have moved on from here, the man answered.
00:01:09.439 --> 00:01:11.280
I heard them say, Let's go to Dothan.
00:01:11.920 --> 00:01:15.359
So Joseph went after his brothers and he found them near Dothan.
00:01:15.680 --> 00:01:20.719
But they saw him in the distance, and before he reached them they plotted to kill him.
00:01:21.040 --> 00:01:23.760
Here comes that dreamer, they said to each other.
00:01:24.000 --> 00:01:30.239
Come now, let's kill him, throw him into one of the cisterns, and say that a ferocious animal devoured him.
00:01:30.480 --> 00:01:33.519
Then we'll see what comes of his dreams.
00:01:34.159 --> 00:01:41.280
So Jacob, or Israel, as he's called here, tells Joseph to go and check on his brothers and come back and bring a report.
00:01:41.680 --> 00:01:52.159
And Joseph realizes that his brothers have gone farther north from Shechem to Dotham, which would have been around a 15 to 20 mile trek that he would have to travel to find them.
00:01:52.480 --> 00:01:56.159
But notice this is not an insignificant detail.
00:01:57.040 --> 00:02:00.159
God is at work, even in the background.
00:02:00.480 --> 00:02:04.480
When we can't see him, when we don't know his timing, God is at work.
00:02:04.719 --> 00:02:15.199
And so he's coming to this area and he put Joseph closer to merchants who would have been traveling on their way to Egypt to find Joseph in his dire situation.
00:02:15.680 --> 00:02:19.280
But before he can get there, the brothers are already plotting then.
00:02:19.759 --> 00:02:21.120
They're plotting to kill him.
00:02:21.280 --> 00:02:22.560
I mean, imagine that.
00:02:22.879 --> 00:02:34.879
So much hatred and jealousy and resentment harbored in their hearts that they decide that the very best thing they can do is to do away with this brother for good.
00:02:35.120 --> 00:02:39.759
And so they see him and they begin mocking him and saying, here comes the dreamer.
00:02:40.000 --> 00:02:46.479
And the plot thickens as they decide to throw him into a cistern where an animal would rip him to shreds and devour him.
00:02:46.560 --> 00:02:48.560
That's the thought that they want to give across.
00:02:48.719 --> 00:02:50.159
That's their story.
00:02:50.400 --> 00:02:58.800
And I just want to stop and ask, what in the world leads a human heart to such a devastating and destructive place?
00:02:59.759 --> 00:03:02.719
This has been going on since from the very beginning of time.
00:03:02.879 --> 00:03:09.759
And before you say I'd never stoop to that level, just consider the hatred and jealousy in your heart and mind.
00:03:10.319 --> 00:03:25.120
When Jesus was speaking in the Sermon on the Mount some 2,000 years ago, he said in Matthew chapter 5, verse 21, You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, you shall not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.
00:03:25.360 --> 00:03:31.360
But I tell you that anyone who is even angry with a brother or sister will be subject to judgment.
00:03:31.840 --> 00:03:36.960
And anyone who says to a brother or sister, Raka is answerable to the court.
00:03:37.199 --> 00:03:43.280
And anyone who says you fool will be in danger of the fire of hell.
00:03:43.840 --> 00:03:47.039
So Jesus does not let us off easy.
00:03:47.599 --> 00:04:07.360
The hatred in our hearts is a recognition and a reminder of the sin that can seep into each one of us, that if left unchecked, not only can lead to the killing of others, but even worse, can lead to our own eternal destructive death in hell, apart from God forever.
00:04:07.759 --> 00:04:15.520
For it was for this very sin, for hateful, destructive hearts, that led Jesus Christ to go resolutely to the cross.
00:04:15.840 --> 00:04:23.839
That his death would pave the way that we might give up bitterness and the harbor of such anger to be able to give it to God.
00:04:24.399 --> 00:04:36.800
That God would remove a heart of stone and hate and anger and give us a soft heart of flesh, one that is softened towards him and even those who we formerly hated.
00:04:37.439 --> 00:04:39.759
That can't happen without God's intervention.
00:04:39.839 --> 00:04:49.920
And so I want to invite you today to give up any feelings of bitterness, anger, rage, or hatred and give it to Jesus Christ.
00:04:50.240 --> 00:04:57.519
Let him crucify those feelings and give you a supernatural love even for your enemies.
00:04:57.839 --> 00:05:03.680
For at one time, it was while we were yet enemies that Christ died for us.
00:05:05.839 --> 00:05:07.759
Thanks for joining us here today.
00:05:07.920 --> 00:05:15.199
There's a lot of great content to explore on Orchard Hill Plus and on the Orchard Hill main feed from the weekend.
00:05:15.360 --> 00:05:16.720
Have a great day.
