00:00:00.467 --> 00:00:05.304
This is episode eleven …… of the Open Source Utopia Podcast.
00:00:06.605 --> 00:00:13.012
Today we are all using open source software …… to a smaller or larger degree.
00:00:13.445 --> 00:00:20.553
Even governments rely on it, and open source software is a cornerstone …… of the Internet.
00:00:21.620 --> 00:00:36.435
Still, we have seen examples …… of important open source projects …… that are maintained by a small group of people …… or, in some cases, just a single person.
00:00:37.369 --> 00:00:48.448
The software can play a central part …… in services used by billions of people, while the developer is surviving …… on a shoestring budget.
00:00:50.250 --> 00:00:53.652
That, my friends, is a dangerous situation.
00:00:54.087 --> 00:00:59.359
But, and I've said this before, it's not wrong to be a free rider.
00:01:00.159 --> 00:01:06.933
Open source software is there to be used …… however you want.
00:01:07.500 --> 00:01:10.469
Nothing is expected of you in return.
00:01:12.438 --> 00:01:30.322
But as a company, government, institution, or individual, who base your business on open source software, it should be in your interest …… that the open source software you are using …… has a sustainable future.
00:01:31.858 --> 00:01:42.067
But I don't think most companies, governments, institutions, or individuals know…… that they are using open source software.
00:01:43.036 --> 00:01:48.174
And I don't think they know …… how open source works.
00:01:49.909 --> 00:01:55.814
So, I think it's important …… that we talk more about open source.
00:01:56.182 --> 00:02:05.290
After all, open source projects …… are social endeavours …… and need the security of a community.
00:02:06.593 --> 00:02:15.668
The next episode will have more about that …… and other types of security in open source.
