ABOUT THIS EPISODE
In this episode of This One’s For You, Dr. Hollis speaks directly to women navigating housing instability about one of the hardest parts of an unstable season: when emotions, responsibilities, relationships, hopes, and daily demands begin to merge into one overwhelming burden. She introduces a different way to move through the season by naming it, protecting capacity, and deciding what actually deserves to be carried forward.

TRANSCRIPT 🔗
00:00:20.160 --> 00:00:31.120
Right where you are, between physical places and head spaces, between disappointment and determination, between bottles and bed level, stop right there and listen.
00:00:31.280 --> 00:00:41.200
We're going to set aside all the weights, pressures, burdens, and heaviness that you've carried into this moment so it's not occupying all of your attention at once.
00:00:41.679 --> 00:00:44.719
Let's start with everything you've been feeling.
00:00:44.960 --> 00:00:50.560
Take a deep breath and gather your anger, your shame, your sadness, your outrage.
00:00:50.799 --> 00:00:54.719
Gather your lost joy and happiness, your laughter.
00:00:54.960 --> 00:00:56.560
Gather your indifference.
00:00:56.799 --> 00:01:01.200
And on the exhale, open the door and release it.
00:01:03.280 --> 00:01:05.599
Now, take another deep breath.
00:01:05.840 --> 00:01:08.959
Hold it and gather your responsibilities.
00:01:09.280 --> 00:01:21.439
Securing beds, getting meals and transportation, and everything else that requires your attention that I didn't name, along with finding the glue within yourself to hold it all together.
00:01:23.200 --> 00:01:27.040
Exhale, open the door and release it.
00:01:29.439 --> 00:01:32.159
Gather your wishes, your hopes, and dreams.
00:01:32.319 --> 00:01:38.319
I want you to reach as far back as you need to and as far into the future as you can see.
00:01:39.120 --> 00:01:41.920
Open the door and release it.
00:01:45.120 --> 00:01:54.239
One of the hardest and entirely invisible parts about homelessness is that problems amass and converge into one big challenge blob.
00:01:54.640 --> 00:02:06.159
Separate problems begin to feel like one huge obligation that needs to be solved in an instant, even though they come from different people, systems, or circumstances.
00:02:07.040 --> 00:02:13.599
Sister Girl, the truth is that in this season you can't afford to spend your capacity so willy-nilly.
00:02:13.759 --> 00:02:22.159
Every crisis, every person, every demand, and every problem does not deserve your attention simply because it is in front of you.
00:02:22.400 --> 00:02:29.840
You will have to make hard decisions about where, when, and why, and who you spend your capacity on.
00:02:30.319 --> 00:02:33.599
I've heard it said time is our most precious resource.
00:02:33.759 --> 00:02:37.039
Well, today, let's replace time with capacity.
00:02:37.199 --> 00:02:39.360
And let me tell you why this is important.
00:02:39.599 --> 00:02:49.439
Because constant listener, you may have time available and still not have the mental, emotional, or physical bandwidth to use that time well.
00:02:49.840 --> 00:02:57.199
So today, in this season of instability, your capacity is your most precious resource.
00:02:57.759 --> 00:03:06.800
Now, before we can leverage our capacity within the time we have available, we are going to get control of our situation by naming it.
00:03:07.039 --> 00:03:10.639
Now, I can hear you saying, wait, wait, what?
00:03:11.039 --> 00:03:14.000
How is naming my situation going to help?
00:03:14.159 --> 00:03:14.879
I'm homeless.
00:03:14.960 --> 00:03:16.479
That is the situation.
00:03:16.960 --> 00:03:18.800
Now, how do I know you said that?
00:03:19.120 --> 00:03:20.800
Because I said it.
00:03:20.960 --> 00:03:25.520
I looked around at that hotel room and I thought, I'm here out of necessity.
00:03:25.759 --> 00:03:27.280
I have no place to go.
00:03:27.520 --> 00:03:29.199
The fact is, I'm homeless.
00:03:29.280 --> 00:03:30.960
There is no naming it.
00:03:31.120 --> 00:03:33.120
I did that also while driving.
00:03:33.280 --> 00:03:37.919
Even if I could get off the truck, there was nowhere to go.
00:03:38.800 --> 00:03:46.879
But constant listener, listen to me when I say naming your season puts a boundary around what is happening.
00:03:47.120 --> 00:03:52.800
It gives your mind something to see, locate, and begin organizing around.
00:03:53.280 --> 00:03:58.719
So when it came time for me to name my season of homelessness, I called it hell.
00:03:58.879 --> 00:04:07.039
And when I tell you hell came into full view, sister girl, everything before me was laid out in 4D.
00:04:07.120 --> 00:04:14.800
I promise you, I could see where I was, what I needed, and what I needed to do to get out of hell.
00:04:15.120 --> 00:04:21.360
One of my favorite colloquialisms is when you're going through hell, get out before the devil knows you're there.
00:04:21.519 --> 00:04:24.639
That's in my best Sam Elliott voice, no less.
00:04:24.879 --> 00:04:29.600
Then I thought about Keanu Reeves and Constantine moving through hell.
00:04:29.920 --> 00:04:38.720
He knew he was moving through a place, and because there was a purpose, he could look for what he needed and pay attention to what he needed to avoid.
00:04:38.959 --> 00:04:43.600
That is what naming did for me and what it'll do for you.
00:04:44.000 --> 00:04:45.920
It gave me orientation.
00:04:46.079 --> 00:04:53.680
It turned this huge, undefined, illogical experience into a mental landscape I could picture myself moving through.
00:04:53.920 --> 00:05:00.319
And once I could picture myself moving through it, I could begin asking different questions than the daily survival ones.
00:05:00.560 --> 00:05:04.639
Mainly, what is going to help me get through this?
00:05:04.959 --> 00:05:09.439
Constant listener, naming the season does more than label what's happening.
00:05:09.680 --> 00:05:13.040
It gives us a way to navigate it.
00:05:13.600 --> 00:05:20.480
Now, because this is a podcast and I'm summing up, I know naming your season can sound a lot easier than it actually is.
00:05:20.639 --> 00:05:25.600
And I don't want you to rush through this part just because I'm moving on to the next section.
00:05:25.839 --> 00:05:28.480
The name has to mean something to you.
00:05:28.639 --> 00:05:30.639
So listen to the full episode.
00:05:30.879 --> 00:05:48.160
But before you move forward with what comes next, give yourself a few days if you need them and think about what has mattered to you, what you have lived through before, what you know about yourself, what you're trying to protect, and what this season actually feels like to you.
00:05:48.319 --> 00:05:51.680
Then give it a name that helps you understand where you are.
00:05:52.000 --> 00:06:01.680
Once your season has a name, we can now go back to everything we said outside of our doors and welcome in our companions on this journey.
00:06:01.920 --> 00:06:05.759
Let's start with your emotions because we set those down first.
00:06:06.319 --> 00:06:12.639
Now ask yourself, what emotions do I need to welcome in to get through the season I just named?
00:06:12.879 --> 00:06:18.399
And which ones can't come with me in the same way they have been traveling with me.
00:06:19.839 --> 00:06:39.120
I couldn't afford to carry indifference through hell because if I stopped caring about what happened to me, stopped caring about what happened to my children, stopped caring whether I moved forward or remained where I was, then I could get lost there, and that season could last much longer than I wanted it to.
00:06:39.439 --> 00:06:44.000
I could not stop in hell, so I had to keep caring.
00:06:44.240 --> 00:06:51.040
Now that didn't mean I had to feel good every day, pretend I was not angry, or convince myself that everything was going to work.
00:06:51.279 --> 00:07:05.839
It just meant I had to recognize which emotions would help me remain connected to myself, my children, and the possibility of something beyond that season, and which emotions were making it easier to stop moving.
00:07:06.079 --> 00:07:20.639
Now we're not asking you to label your emotions good or bad, but we are asking you to identify the ones that are helpful, which ones you'll need more of, which ones you'll have to learn to cultivate to move through the places you have named.
00:07:23.040 --> 00:07:26.800
Now let's go back for the responsibilities outside our door.
00:07:27.279 --> 00:07:35.439
Now that you can see the season more clearly, ask yourself which responsibilities require your capacity to move.
00:07:35.759 --> 00:07:43.519
This part is especially hard because you're going to have to be selfish and be okay with being alone and perhaps unliked.
00:07:43.759 --> 00:07:48.560
Now, in this season, selfish does not mean that you stop caring about other people.
00:07:48.800 --> 00:08:00.720
It means you recognize that your capacity is limited and you can't keep giving pieces of it away just because someone expects access to you, the entitlement.
00:08:01.199 --> 00:08:14.399
You're going to have to learn how to choose yourself, even if it's uncomfortable, because right now you're trying to get through homelessness, and that requires so much more of you.
00:08:16.160 --> 00:08:18.399
So let's talk relationships.
00:08:18.720 --> 00:08:26.720
Some relationships you will not be able to attend to because the return on your capacity investment is not worth it.
00:08:27.040 --> 00:08:43.600
It may be one of the hardest decisions you make, but ask who's going to help you get through this season, who doesn't require an explanation, and who's not going to judge or require from you when you don't have anything to give.
00:08:44.399 --> 00:08:47.840
The reality is you don't need a large circle for this season.
00:08:48.000 --> 00:08:54.879
You need to know which relationships make the journey lighter and which ones require more from you than you have available.
00:08:55.519 --> 00:08:59.919
That question alone will help you decide who belongs in your circle.
00:09:00.559 --> 00:09:06.879
Now, I had to go through hell alone because no one in my circle had ever experienced homelessness.
00:09:07.440 --> 00:09:10.159
And I did not know who I was gonna ask.
00:09:10.399 --> 00:09:17.840
That is not to say I didn't have family or friends in my corner, but homelessness complicates relationships.
00:09:18.080 --> 00:09:22.720
And those of us who have been there or are experiencing it now know this.
00:09:23.279 --> 00:09:31.759
People can love you and still not be someone you have the capacity to stay connected to in the same way during this season.
00:09:32.080 --> 00:09:35.279
Support and access are not the same thing.
00:09:35.519 --> 00:09:42.559
And you need to limit access to your capacity, even when the relationship itself still matters.
00:09:43.279 --> 00:09:47.120
Some relationships are not your responsibility to carry through this season.
00:09:47.440 --> 00:09:49.919
Leave them outside the door for this journey.
00:09:50.000 --> 00:09:53.279
And if they don't understand, then they don't understand.
00:09:54.799 --> 00:09:59.919
Finally, let's return to the door for your hopes and dreams because we set those down too.
00:10:00.080 --> 00:10:04.639
And I don't want you to leave them behind just because you're in a difficult season.
00:10:04.960 --> 00:10:15.120
You may not have the capacity today to build the whole life you're imagining, but there may be a hope you need to keep close enough to remind you why you're still moving.
00:10:15.279 --> 00:10:23.679
A mental talisman that tells you this season is a place you're going through and not the final description of your life.
00:10:24.159 --> 00:10:32.320
Sister girl, some hopes need to stay close because they give meaning to the choices you're making now, even if you can't act on them yet.
00:10:32.480 --> 00:10:36.240
You don't have to carry the full weight of all your hopes and dreams right now.
00:10:36.399 --> 00:10:41.919
Just keep one or two within reach so that you remember there is still something ahead of you.
00:10:42.159 --> 00:10:49.919
And finally, look at what remains and give yourself permission to leave it where you set it down, right outside your door.
00:10:50.080 --> 00:10:51.840
Oh, that's so powerful.
00:10:52.879 --> 00:10:54.080
Chapter two.
00:10:55.120 --> 00:11:06.799
I made it through hell, and I am very different from the person who entered it, different from the person who was traveling through it, and different from the person who was here before you now.
00:11:07.120 --> 00:11:22.320
Of course, I carry scar tissue from that season, memories I would rather forget, and others I still hold close, like a mental talisman, because they remind me of what it took to keep moving when I didn't know how long the journey would last.
00:11:23.519 --> 00:11:39.360
I remember standing in the bathroom at the hotel while the kids were just on the other side of the door, turning on the hot water as hot as it could go, laying my towel across the sink, and stepping into the shower with everything I had been holding wound tightly inside.
00:11:40.000 --> 00:11:51.039
I stood under that hot water for a long time, and then the thoughts came, and then the tears and the anger came rushing forth until I felt empty.
00:11:51.279 --> 00:11:58.879
And really empty is not the right word because empty suggests there is simply nothing there, and it can be refilled.
00:11:59.200 --> 00:12:14.080
Constant listener, what I felt was more like a void, a hollowed-out place where all the weight had been drained away, and there was nothing left to fill it with, nothing left of me, and nothing to brace myself against.
00:12:14.320 --> 00:12:23.120
Now that void dropped me to my knees, and I cried again, but I cried this time from somewhere deeper than exhaustion.
00:12:23.440 --> 00:12:32.559
I cried for what I had lost, I cried for my failures, I cried because I was angry, and I cried because I was lost.
00:12:32.879 --> 00:12:39.279
I stayed there on my knees beneath that hot water until I heard a voice telling me to get up.
00:12:39.440 --> 00:12:49.360
A voice that originated inside of me but seemed to reverberate beyond me, and all the water molecules in that bathroom.
00:12:49.759 --> 00:13:03.120
I could hear it in my ear as clearly as if someone were standing in the bathroom next to me in that shower, mouth pressed closely to my ear, saying, get up.
00:13:03.600 --> 00:13:10.080
Oh, between sobs and hyperventilations and bewilderment, it would repeat its command.
00:13:10.480 --> 00:13:11.440
Get up.
00:13:12.559 --> 00:13:33.519
Eventually, I answered, Oh my gosh, sister girl, truth be told, I did not want to stand because I knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that standing would mean forward movement, and I didn't know where I was going or what I was going to do on the other side of that bathroom door if I was to stand.
00:13:34.399 --> 00:13:37.279
Still, still I responded.
00:13:37.519 --> 00:13:41.759
Despite the uncertainty, I responded.
00:13:42.320 --> 00:13:48.000
I reached for the shower bar, gripped it, and pulled myself to my feet.
00:13:49.120 --> 00:14:06.960
I stepped out of that shower and out of that bathroom into the same hotel room with the same uncertainty waiting on the other side of another door with the same long journey ahead of me, with no clear understanding of where that journey would take me or how long it would last.
00:14:08.000 --> 00:14:13.279
Turns out it lasted longer than I wanted, but not as long as I thought it would.
00:14:14.399 --> 00:14:16.159
Hell is a long way off.
00:14:16.799 --> 00:14:26.080
Not because I have arrived somewhere final, but because my capacity has expanded beyond what it was when I first entered that season.
00:14:26.320 --> 00:14:29.759
I pretended I was what I was going through hell.
00:14:29.840 --> 00:14:38.159
And I learned to grab what I needed in order to stand and to make my way through, no matter how high.
00:14:43.360 --> 00:14:49.840
And you don't have to carry all of it in every person, in every emotion access to your capacity.
00:14:50.080 --> 00:15:01.600
None of us know the length of the journey ahead, but you can choose what helps you stand, what helps you move, and what helps you remain connected to the woman you are becoming.
00:15:01.759 --> 00:15:02.480
I'm Dr.
00:15:02.639 --> 00:15:03.279
Hollis.
00:15:03.440 --> 00:15:06.399
Until next time, I love y'all.
