Speaker 1: Oh a great time. I'll rustee Clasper into the end zone. Such down, touchdown, stop, touchdown, claps down, bubbled over time. That's what it's like when you start to win games, they get bigger, big games like today, not two or die games, but big games with more big games to come. Big game today against New England. There will be more in the twelve that remain after today. The snap Here comes a four man rush. John steps up in the pocket. Half time fires a deep down. People again for Brown. It has tipped. It is intercepted, pick up by Devin Mccording at the Patriots starting. Brandon Bolden goes in motion and they give it to him on the jet sweeping. He heads into the end zone. Brandon Bolden touchdown New England. Maybe he rushed the pun is block I into the air. It pops up at about the twelve Patriots or cover matthrews later into the end zone. Touchdown. How about that? Are you gonna throw it? Pressure rolls right, look right, fires into the endome intercepted, intercepted in the end doome. Mica Hide has it. Michael Hide picks it up in the end zone and goes down there for the touchback. That's how you keep him out of the endome. Here goes Frank Moore. You're changing direction as he goes over the middle, breaking tackles. He could go Frank Moore across midfield or partly brought down thirteen and three a half times. Bills training in the New England Patriots. They have offensively, they just need to keep doing what they've been doing. The Bill's defense has done a great job against Tom Brady, holding him under one hundred yards day and forcing an interception. Fourth and goal from the one. Josh Allen on the key for them all popped out of his hands, bounces back to Gore. But they were a little touchdown. They were a little touchdown. Josh Allen broke the plane. Touchdown Buffalo. Now finally the snap, Allan looks to throw, pressure, jumps up, gonna run with it. Josh on the run. Oh, he gets banked hard as he gets close to the first down sticks at the thirty eight yard line and the flag goes down there. It's concerned for Josh Allen. Now by six a minute and a half left, there's the zip Barkley. This passes tip high the England. It is college. You've come tough with it. It was a great game to watch if you liked football, and if you like defensive football, you got your money's worth here today. But the big killer mistakes is what they couldn't get past. There you are the game rewind presented by Toshiba, the official copy or company of the Buffalo Bills. Good afternoon, Welcome to our show, One Bill's Live from One Bill's Drive, John Murphy with our co host Steve Tasker and our Monday guest every Monday winnings. Here after our home games happen to have color analysts on the Bills Radio Network. Former Bill center Eric Quid with us, Eric, good job yesterday. I appreciate it. Likewise, yeah, we had fun. Yeah, I'll tell you what. And I was thinking about this right before it came in here. Um, as I said it in the broadcast, that was a great NFL game to watch, and it's a bitter loss. It hurts today more than most losses. Steve, what do you I mean? This rushing game to watch? A great game? It was, and it is. It's one of those where you think, God, that was a huge missed opportunity this close right, It was a huge missed opportunity. You feel like you had those guys. You played well enough defensively certainly to win just about any game you're ever gonna play. The block punt was a crusher, uh, you know obviously for a guy like me, and then you know you just had one just you know, was less. In a game like that, there's a handful of plays. If any of them go their other way, you win the game. And you know, missfield goal here, a block punt there, that's ten points that special teams handed him, you know, and you lose by six. Yeah, it's hard to take. And he still had chances to win at the end. I mean, it's just a game where you just couldn't get on top of it. Josh taking the big hit. You know, a lot of conversation about the big hit on Joge, what's your you just left the game a year or two ago, what's your take on that hit? Eric? In the moment, I thought he should have been ejected. That's how I felt in the moment. As I rewatched the hit and listened to Jones, the defender who made the hit, talk about it after the game, I can sympathize a little bit. He was basically saying, in a situation like that, what exactly do you want me to do? It is a crucial third down play and he's straining at the sticks. Do I simply let him get the first down? Or do I try and make a hit and try and stop him from going any further? Now when well, as you see right here, yes you could aim lower, but Josh is going forward. You know, he's falling forward, so his target misses. Now, I'm not defending it, and you can listen to my coverage of it on the radio. I wanted him ejected. I was ticked off that the penalties offset. I thought the ball was gone before Deon Deon Dawkins. Um, you know Josh Allen escaped the pocket immediately Deon Dawkins traps a guy to the ground. That is not a hold. I don't know why they called it a hold. You're allowed to trap a defender down. Well, then they offset the penalty, So yes, you know, I was ticked off about it. You know, it's tough and in today's NFL there's not a place for that. And he's gonna get a big old FedEx uh enveloping his locker on Wednesday, and it's gonna be a big boy find absolutely he does. He does. He deserves be fine. He deserved the penalty. The soft holding penalty sixteen miles away from the play is something the officials should get. A minus four. I don't think he's gonna get I don't think he should get suspended. It's a bang, but it's a big play. No question. It was a bad hit. He hit the guy too high. But we've seen this a ton over the last ten years. Cam Newton always he's running the football. Now he's had to stop because guy, he got a target on you. If you're a quarterback, you're running the ball and you're gonna go head first. Guy's gonna take shots at you, whether they're legal or not. They're gonna lay the wood on you if you're going head first. I was with you. I thought, okay, that's that's at least a penalty, maybe an ejection. When you go back and look at it, the thing that gets you is he get no justice out of it because you get, like you said, a horrible holding call completely away and behind the play. The quarterbacks running the football come on an offset like that, and I agree with the guys earlier that's been said, in a situation like that, which when a personal foul like that from player safety, the other the other penalty needs to get picked up. You know, they should not be off setting well. And that brought up a third and nine for Matt Barkley to come in the game on well. In my opinion, with a holding call and then a helmet to helmet hit a personal foul of that nature, you should take the distance off for the holding penalty and then add on the personal foul yard and it should be an automatic first down. You get an automatic first down every other time for of that penalty, you know what I mean. I feel like that is a way that not that you're going to get justice out of, you know, your quarterback being taken out of the game and possibly missing the next game and all of that with this concussion or being in the concussion protocol. But but you should definitely get a first down that situation. And I said this Eric to you yesterday on the broadcast. It was clear and you have a good solution there. It was clear that that was not justice. That was not justice done to have that egregious unnecessary roughness penalty be wiped out by a hold away from the play and you had a good solution here. But the other thing, and I do have to say this, if you are as a league, as an officiating crew, are really serious about taking head hits out of the game, helmet the helmet hits, you gotta reject that guy. I know. And by the way, Steve, I have to I have to tell you when I hear you start to blame Josh for what lowering his head or moving forward, he's playing the game too, you know. Oh yeah, that was a clear hit on the head. The guy should rejected and he had an opportunity. First of all, it didn't have to make a hit. Josh was gonna go down. Listen. Secondly, you can aim lower, and they've you you were there in the league. They were teaching people to aim lower. And for that guy's an outlier. That doesn't happen anymore. That penalty doesn't happen anymore. I'll tell you this too. I'll tell you this to Josh. He wasn't lowering his head. He's getting pulled down. Yeah, I don't. I don't go for this thing where Josh lowered his head, Josh getting pulled down. The guy he made contact with twenty one there Brown before Jones got there. Um, so Josh is getting pulled down and then the guy came in and the guy was high. He hit him high. There's no question about it. If it wasn't there was, And I agree with you, it's it is. I mean, as I'm watching it now, I'm looking at it even worse than it was. Hammling what was the guy's name, n Harmon is pulling him down. He hit him high. Yeah, and look, those hits are are Eric, You're just out of the league. Those hits are increasingly rare. That's an outlier that doesn't happen much anymore. Yeah, And you know, if you're gonna get the message across, we don't want hits like that, you gotta be serious about it. Throughout my time in the NFL, they've cut back a lot of those of a lot of those hits, and it was enforced. They're teaching it different And what's happening is they're teaching it differently at the high school level the college level. So now guys are coming in the into the NFL. You know, back when Steve played, if you know, in throughout the nineties, if they would have did it. Yeah, and if they would have just said, hey, put an end to it right now. Well, yes, the programs would try, but you've been doing it a certain way for twenty years. It's hard to revert on old habits. Every hit was egregious. Yeah so now yeah, so now he's he's been in grain since high school. Hey, no hits to the head. You know we're gonna aim lower. Well, then in a bang bang play, you're not as accustomed to trying to take those shots, I would hope. So anyway, listen, I'll tell you this too. There was a number of plays in that in that game where there were times I thought the officials were having a rough time. Uh. The interception that was that was reviewed and not overturned. When Zay Jones has got his hand on the ball standing out abound, on one foot on the ground, got his hand on the ball, and the interceptors is still in the air. That's not an interception, right, That's not an interception. That's when when you got a hand on the ball and you're standing out of bounds, the balls out of bounds, it's dead and the guy who intercepted it for the Patriots was still in the air. And then one foot down. He's got to have two feet down before his second foot comes down. Zays standing out of bounds with his hand on the ball. It's dead. That's not an interception. And they review it, and once again, the guys in New York completely blow it. I mean, I don't know how you miss that. It's a it's egregious and I don't know. I don't know what they're looking at or how many different ways you can slice it. But those guys in New York completely blew a review. That is football one on one and Tony and Gene Strator said it on the on the broadcast, do you really want to focus on fish here? It's sour grapes? That right, But you know that game, that's what you're resigned to when you get into a one score game. Wow, you know what I mean, there's one play anyway, There's so much meat on this bone. There's so much that went on here, and I don't think officiating was it really the whole What do you think? No? No, I don't you know. And the Bills, you know, it goes without saying. The Bills defense played absolutely exceptional yesterday. You know, holding Tom Brady maybe the best to ever do it at the quarterback positions, to the numbers that they did. It was there, it was there for the taking. But the Bills offense could not get points. And this is an elite Patriots defense, but they could not put up enough points. I said it last week when we were talking about it. I said it in the pregame. You were not going to beat the Patriots scoring ten points. Ever, I thought it was going to take twenty four points, twenty eight points, maybe even thirty points. You know, I just assumed that it would take one of those efforts. And the Bills hold him to sixteen points yesterday, and sixteen points, seven of which come off of an interception. You know, they capitalize on an interception get the ball at midfield, and the other one was a block punt. You know, you can't you can't say enough good things about what the Bills defense did yesterday. In the Patriots had all the defensive numbers right, going in number one in virtually every category. I think the Bills defense out played him yesterday, Steve, I really do. Yeah. I mean, I'll tell you this. The you know, Josh has got to play better. I mean, he made some some of the Josh interception. We're gonna start to have a name for those, you know, the Josh is the court, the ones. You know he's going backwards off his back foot and throws it down the middle. You can't do that. He did it yesterday as well, threw it down the sidelines a couple of times, and you just you know, and we had this conversation. We're gonna have this big conversation. I don't know if we'll get to it, and I guess we will. Brian day Bole is over there coaching him hard. And when I say he's coaching him hard, he's he's he's like giving him the business after a couple of those plays, and it's and you tell me, Eric, and different guys respond to different coaching, and you gotta and some of them respond when you when you chew him out, they kind of respond to that. It gets it gets him and other guys. You need to add a boy, pat on the back and say I get you, Hey, that was a great for that kind of you know, you kind of coach him positive and the other guys, you get on him and tell him it's an excited whatever. You got to find out what he responds to. Yeah, And I'm not sure everything. Yeah, and this coaching staff does a great job of that. Some coaches are out of touch on those on those deals were knowing how to coach a player. I've been around coaches that will blow up on a guy in the sideline. I said, man, you just put him in the tank for the rest of the game. You shouldn't have done that. You know, I trust this staff. Sean McDermott when I played for him, did an incredible job of understanding players and understanding when to build somebody up one to call him out in a meeting in front of the team, and knowing how they would respond in that moment. Did you see And I only noticed it today because it's hard to wear our vantage point, but after the day bole it was a tirade against Josh after one interception, and moments later CBS took a shot of Sean McDermott in a much quieter bench conversation with Josh, and I thought and Stephen I were talking about to be a good cop back guy. I was just gonna say a little good cop, bad cop, and a lot of times that could be effective. You know, you have your offensive coordinator who probably spends more time with Josh Allen than anybody in this world throughout the season, more than you know Josh's girlfriend even you know. And so they have a great relationship. And it's probably one of those deals where Brian day Ball is comfortable enough where he can talk to Josh and they can, you know, they can. They can still love each other. But you gotta have some words. Absolutely. But but I will say this on the one interception to Zay Jones that earlier, the first interception of the game, that's one on one cover or sorry, second interception of the game, Zay Jones has got to come back to that ball. It's one on one and Zay Jones is fading away from the ball and he's simply undercut. That is unacceptable from a receiver standpoint in my opinion. And when you have a when you have a young quarterback, any quarterback really, but when you have a young quarterback, you have to fight to make sure in one on one coverage if he gives you a chance up in the air, that you do not allow him to make an interception there. Yeah, your ball skills have got to take over, and I'm with you, Zay could have done a better job even if you just pull him to the ground. Yes, you got to take the penalty. You can't let the guy come down with that football. And when you look back for it, you got to make a play on the ball or you can't allow that guy to make a play on it. Tune, and Josh has got to have enough trust in those guys and his receivers that, yeah, he's gonna he's not gonna let that happen. And Zay did and that I'm with you on that. I think I put a little bit of that on Isa. I was telling Steve this morning, the great Hall of Famer at James Lofton when he played here, used to tell me that part of his job, and he would compare himself to other receivers, part of his job was to break up interceptions. He thought it was an important part of his job and he did it pretty well. Absolutely. Yeah, you turn it as soon as you're out of position to make a catch. You become the defensive back. And I remember clear as day the first time it really stuck out to me that situation. It was Fitzpatrick talking to Stevie Johns. We were playing at the Giants. Actually, the last time that the Bill started three twenty eleven. We're playing at the Giants and Fits through a one on one pass. Now worked, we have the ball, and this was we had the ball and I believe either tie game or had the lead, and Fits through a one on one ball up to Stevie and Steve let the ball get picked, and Fitz told him, he said, look, I have to trust you in a situation like that that you will not allow the defender to make a play. And it was a one on one catch and Stevie was in a decent position, but you gotta just bat that ball down. And I thought that interception as well as the one on the sideline, you know, they have to go to battle for that ball and not let it get picked. Because in a game against an elite team like the Patriots, we mentioned it before, a couple plays go different and that's a different ball game. Obviously, the pun in the misfield. You know, there's a number of big play game but those but those plays where they're not breaking up the ball, those are just as big. YEP. So you're right about say Jones, and I accept your point, but it has to be said. Josh Allen was very shaky yesterday. Maybe it is worst game in Bills uniform in his fifteen start, twenty three year old quarterback, I get that, um, but I thought he was confused by what he was seeing, which we all anticipated that might be the case. Steve, and he was clearly the use of time out. Sometimes he would walk to the line of scrimmage and take a long time trying to You could see him kind of sorting out who's here, who's lined up where, And you had to expect the Patriots would do that, right, did it effect? Let's face it, Josh joins a long list of young quarterbacks who've stood back there and go, what's going on? Yeah, that's what they do well, even to veteran quarterbacks. Peyton Manning was the same way he was. He would stand back there and it would take him a while. His body language was kind of cool as a cucumber, but he he'd tell you said, what you know, I don't know what they were doing because they switched positions, they got guys trade and positions, they got guys moved, and then plus they don't line up. They do what what poor Year and Hide do as safeties for the Bills. They disguise everything they know where they're supposed to be when the when the play snapped, but they ain't anywhere near it pre snap. So they had very were very confident in their ability to get to fall back into their spots while not giving Josh any heads up. And let's face it, you know less than the years starting. You knew part of their plan was to not let him know exactly what he was going to see until post snap for sure. And Brian Dabele has done an excellent job this year utilizing motions and formations to identify coverage for Josh Allen before the play starts. Patriots did a better job than anyone else they faced this year. Now, the Patriots run a ton of man coverage and they have good man to band defenders. The issue yesterday became Josh had a lot of people around him, and the Patriots are excellent rushing the passer, but a lot of those came on third and longs and I thought at times, you know, the Bills were hurting themselves with procedure penalties, holding penalties, whatever it may be, and then they would get in third and thirteen. Well, that's a really tough spot for a quarterback, and it's especially against an elite defense like the Patriots. Yeah, hey, you were talking pre game me think about Kyle Annoy when a great defender. He is one of those versatile guys. He had a really interesting quote after the game. Richz Amini tweeted it out. Kyle van Noy, Patriots linebacker? Was he number not fifty fifty three, Kyle v I'm already thinking of Tennessee number. Kyle van Noy on Alan last Yester. He said this quote. He didn't know what we were doing back there. Vannoy said he was shook back there. I think it's pretty accurate, right, I mean it appeared that way, but you don't often get a quote like that, but it's it's true. Steve right, he did. Josh didn't know what they were doing, and he was he was shaking up. Yeah. Plus they had the ability too to cover up guys. And Josh was looking back there and he wasn't seeing the separation he wanted to see before he let go of the football, So he patted the ball a lots and tried to step away. And there was a couple of times either one we're just seeing right here. A couple of times when the Patriot's passed rush just got there a little too quick as well. The offensive line got caught looking and got caught on its heels and got pushed back into his lap. So you got to tip your hat. There were two really really good defenses in that game, and it showed sixteen to ten. I mean, it was great defense. It was a It was a game, and you think too, it could have been It should have been even closer than it was. You think. You know, the Bills miss a field goal right before halftime and then you're within a few goal in. Then they pass up a chance to get a field goal later in the game because they wanted to go for it on fourth and three at the goal line, and we can talk about that decision as well. This wasn't as tight as a game could get. Yep. Eric, being around this team and this coaching staff as you have been, what would be the lead up to, you know, schooling Josh Allen and what he might expect. I mean, you can't cover everything, obviously, but they I'm sure they told him, hey, they're gonna give you different looks. Absolutely, yeah. Yeah. And Brian day Ball spent so much time in New England, he knows that better than anybody, but what New England will do defensively in almost every game. Now, there's only so much you can do defensively, but they always want to give you something on film you haven't seen, and then they're gonna try and take away what you do best. So they you know, they tried to keep Josh in the pocket at times. They played a lot a tight man demand to not allow those easy access throws too. Cole Beasley to John Brown that we've seen Josh take advantage of through the first three weeks of the season. But they're always going to give you something a little different. And I said in the pregame, if you turn on the films and you ignore the jerseys, if you turn on the film from the Patriots playing the Jets and the Patriots or sorry, the Patriots playing the Steelers. They play a four down front and they play almost exclusively a base three four, which New England has a run a base three four since the late two thousand and eight, two thousand and nine. Yeah, they got away from it in two thousand and ten ish, right, they ran a base three four against Miami. It looks like two totally different teams. So that creates throughout the week. You know, for an offense, you have to do so much from a preparation standpoint, and sometimes we call it chasing ghosts, like how many looks are we truly going to prepare for. Let's prepare for what we've seen maybe most, and then just assume that we're gonna have to adjust throughout the game. Strikes me that the Patriots do that because of great coaching, number one and number two smart players, right, they can adapt. Yeah, and they have guys that they can just plug and play at so many different positions and that's why they like the versatility. But they have pretty much you know, they go a deep across their defensive line. Well, they are so different players. They have guys like Danny Shelton and Lawrence Skott, and they are traditional two gap defensive linemen, put their hands in your chest and read you. And then everybody else they have is more pass rusher Michael Bennett. They're one gap penetrators. Well, because of that, they have the two gappers that they can put to that three four scheam than they have four down linemen where they can pass rush more. Butler, you know, he's a he's a pass rushing defensive tackle. And then they have so many linebackers that they can interchange put them on the line of scrimmage. And I mentioned in the pregame how similar all their heights and weights are. Yes, they're all between six two and six four, and they're all between two hundred and fifty to two hundred and sixty pounds. And they have like six of those guys, and so they can put them on the line of scrimmage, they can put them off the ball. They line them up over the center and they can and then they can give you so many different looks that for a quarterback and an offensive line sometimes it could be hard to identify. It was difficult for Josh. I want to turn to this and by the way, you're going to get a chance too. Listeners and viewers, our question of the day, what was your biggest takeaway about the loss of the Patriots. You can phone it in at eight three five fifty or two three one eight eight eight by fifty two five fifty sending a tweet to one Bill's Live. John Murphy was Steve Tasker and Eric would join us for this first hour. But this is you, this is your sweet spot, this is your expertise. Punt and the punk block. Yeah, and you'll be proud of your man Eric here, who who immediately identified what the problem was when they uncovered the gunners. Talk about that. Yeah, they did it, and the Patriots left the gunners uncovered, which is something that teams will bluff into doing and plus or they'll show you that. But what will happen is at the snap they'll sprint somebody out of the formation out to get in the way if you are going to pass it now, they rolled the dice. They didn't. They uncovered the the gunners and then they didn't run anybody out. They rushed everybody. They overloaded it and they were gonna get home now. If unless you've got a guy who's been doing it now Corey Boy Orkez, and he knew it was coming. I mean there's no way he didn't know. And there was just you gotta have a guy who's you know, experienced enough or confident enough to just pick it up and throw it down the field, just lob it out there. That's the only thing left to do. The Patriots did it so late in the play clock you either had to take a time out or bring the gunners in, and it was bring the gunners in was not an option because they did it so late in the play clock. They didn't have time, wouldn't have had time to come in and get set, or the punters just got to grab it and toss it out there and have confidence that the guy's gonna catch it. Unless you've got that in your repertoire ready to go and have practiced it and have talked about it, you're not gonna try that pass because that it's so easy just to drop a guy out there, get in the passing lane and just run straight to the gunner and break it up. It's just a really difficult thing. The Patriots really rolled the dice on that play and it came up. It came up asis for him because that it does take a courageous group to go and uncover those guys. Because if if Rourke has tosses it out there to Kirk Coleman, that's three points for the Bills at least if the return guy can tackle him. Right when the defense that's giving up less than two hundred yards a game, you don't want to take any risks on special teams that you don't have to because if he throws the ball out there and they get fifty yards there with these scores, even you know, if the guy can't tackle him. Yeah, you haven't given up a touchdown yet this year, and you're going to roll the dice like that. But you know, listening to what the Patriots said after the game, it was something that I identified on film. I said that during the broadcast yesterday, I guarantee the Patriots saw something on film from this punt unit. And as I watched the repack replay back, there is also the perfect storm, a touch low of a snap, not a bad snap, but a touch low. And when you're talking about actions of a second making a huge difference and snap the punt time, you know, maybe that punt gets blocked either way, but it's a pretty close, you know, pretty close deal. And when he has to bend down and get it up, that does not allow him to pull that quick trigger on the punt. Right. The other thing could happened a bit of a perfect bounce to the Matthew Slater right, I mean, you know, like in baseball when the short staff gets the perfect double play. Matthews Slater got a perfect bounce right in his midsection to score. But Eric, as you pointed out, and you said it yesterday they were scouting involved, right, and plus the Patriot snowble Horcz and we both saw the same tweet I think overnight about the Giants did something similar and the Patriots probably saw that, right. The Giants uncover the gunners and the Bills did not adapt or just in the Giants game, right, And this ends up being just an enormous play in the game. They're you know, one of their only two touchdowns the entire day, and on a day that you hold Tom Brady to one of his worst performances of his career, their special teams beat you. And it brings me back to unfortunately, the two thousand and nine Monday Night football game. You know, our our defense played great that night, felt like the offense that night played well enough to win two. And then you have a Leotis Mcalbyn fumble at the end on the kick return and Brady beat us. Then you know, you think about you think, yeah, you think about it, and we said it. I said it going in. I made that that comment about you know, you got forty five guys active on game day, you got to hit on all forty five cylinders and the Patriots did it. The Bills hit on a lot of cylinders, particularly defensively, but you know, one misstep and in a game like that, it's the difference and not really his and not to turn the page and get on another topic, but the Bills also rushed for over one hundred yards yesterday. The Patriots rush defense has been incredible on the season so far, and they run the ball for over one hundred yards. Frank Gore had an incredible day and goes over the fifteen thousand mark and where something was going so right in so many different areas once you know, a bad special teams blunder and then those interceptions and poor i'll say poor passing game. You know, you can call it receivers, quarterback. You know a lot of people are involved in that. From protection standpoint's got to be better. But you know, in a league that's set up for passing nowadays, you know we got to be better moving forward in that area. We've got a lot to talk about. We will continue, we want to review. Get your calls or your tweets, send them in as we talk about yesterday's game, and what's your biggest takeaway was from the Bill's loss of the Patriots. Eric stays with us until one. Chris Brown joins us at one. We're gonna talk with Evan Washburn in the two o'clock hour. He was the sideline reporter on the game yesterday four CBS. Come on back. We're just getting started. One Goes Live, presented by Kalada Health Company, Alive from the Seneca Studio, Seneca Resorts and Casino. Nothing comes close, ilcome Back. One Bill's Live. John Murphy and Steve Tasker. Eric Wood joins us today until one o'clock. Have it have you in the audience, Man's coming by. You can give us a call eight three five fifty toll free one eight eight eight by fifty two five fifty who he can send in a tweet At one Bills Live. We'll get to the tweet sheet in a moment. During the breaks, we're just talking and it merits the scene on the air. The battle pretty much one on one battle between the Bills, John Brown and the Patriot Stephan Gilmour was epic yesterday, right, I mean, it was amazing to watch those two two really good players, it was. And Stephan Gilmour is playing as good as any cornerback in the NFL right now and coming into the season, I'll claim ignorance. I had no idea John Brown was such a polished route runner. I knew he could take the top off of the defense. I saw him do it for a number of years, especially when it's with Arizona, you know, running those post routes with Carson Palmer back at quarterback and just airing it out in him and Bruce arians offense, you know, with those really long receptions. That's what I knew John Brown four, I had absolutely no idea he was such a polished route runner in the Patriots played a ton of man coverage yesterday. They've been playing a lot of man all season, but they played a ton of man coverage yesterday, especially on third down, and I thought John Brown's ability to separate on those was phenomenal. I also thought he was exceptional in the RPOs across the middle. Rarely and you could probably become this better being a former receiver. Rarely do you get a guy that can take the top off of defense, be a polished route runner, and have the guts to go across the middle and make those tough catches. And Eric comments right back to remember day one of training camp. What we're seeing July twenty fifth, first day of practice. Wow, I didn't know John Brown could run routes like that. I mean, he's just an accomplished rout runner. We talked about the day one of camp. We saw it there. He had eleven targets. He had five receptions, so just under half of his targets, you know, he was seven. He had sixty nine yards, which and a lot of them that gave him a chance to win that last that when Barkley came in. Barkley threw that nice touch ball down down the left right sideline on the far side from the home side, and he got a penalty and the reception gave him a chance to get into the ends and they couldn't capitalize on it. But those are the kind of plays late were, you know, really made a difference. And I think also it says something they put steph They went to zero coverage a lot, which you would think, okay, wait a minute, they must like their matchups. But there's also some times where we got some pass interferences, and for the most part I thought it was more about the rush and Josh than it was about the receivers. Yeah, yeah, and the Patriots did a great job, and they've done a great job all year there. You know, you could say they're tops in the league in every category. But they're getting to the quarterback at a great rate. And what they're able to do is their corners know that with the Patriots pass rush, they don't have to be they're not in man coverage forever back there, so they can be aggressive. They can be in bump and run coverage knowing that they just don't simply have time to run a lot of double moves or whatever would be the toughest thing to defend with man coverage. But that you mentioned the John Brown catch as soon as Barkley comes in the game, and what a great play for your veteran rod receiver to make. It's third and nine games on the line. Backup quarterback comes in the game, he's gonna give you a shot one on one. You know they're gonna bring some pressure at Matt Barkley with him just coming into the game cold, and he makes a great pass. Stefan Gilmore has got his left arm pinned and he simply makes the catch with his right arm stays at bound. What a phenomenal play. Patriots still the number one defense in the NFL after yesterday's action, you know it's number two. I would assume the Buffalo bill Bills. Yeah, it was a great game. Let's take a few phone calls. Eric would joins us for the hour. Steve Tasker with us. It's one Bills Live from the Senate Studio, One Bills Drive, and we'll start with I'm gonna say Zai and Buffalo. Is that how you say your name? Yes, sir, Yes, sir. How are you doing zi? Welcome to the show. I'm doing good. How you guys doing okay? Great? All right? I just had a couple points I wanted to write alf back with us. You guys, um, I'm looking at the season there's I mean, I'm looking at the game last night as a glasshop board. The defenses in fix stop shape and they're not even in their prime yet. I feel. Secondally, I want to say I am tired of Ay Jones's inconsistency. M I think Duke Boys need to take his spot and see what he can do. And also I think Rob we needed Robert Foster to help out with John Brown with those deep shots. Because last yesterday I saw the Patron's play one safety high, I believe, and they just got to John Brown because he's the only real deep threat that we have, but it kind of keyed on him. And Lastly, I think the moment was just too big for Josh yesterday. I saw a lot of checkdowns wide opened that he just weren't looking for because I think he wanted the big play a lot, and I think the moment just got a little bit ahead of him. And I'll just sit back when the guys talk about it. Anybody want to take any of those three? I mean, yeah, I mean I'll talk about a couple of I think I think you're right. I think Josh still has that mentality who wants to go big. I think we can all. I think the people like you and I the three of us, we've watched him a lot every game he's played. We've been sitting there watching him. And I thought his body language yesterday was bad, particularly early in the game. If you miss remember, his first pass the game got batted at the line of scrimmage, or maybe it was the second one that got batted. The first one he threw in the dirt on a little out route, quick out route to Cole Beasley. Then he got one batted. Then he overthrew Frank Gore on the flat in the flat, so he really had a hard time, you know what I mean. The ball came out all right, but it was he just hurried the throw, tried to flick it out there and just didn't get off to a fast start. And I think that kind of stuck with him. And then I'm with the caller. I thought there were a couple of times when, you know, he needed to come down real quick and hit that check down a little faster than he did. He wanted to get that deep shot. And of course the interceptions were all about him trying to do too much, sure, I thought, so I am about the other receivers and stuff. I don't know. Yeah, Okay, Zay Jones, maybe we talked about maybe he should have broken that interception up, and I get it. But I think this was more about Josh going against an elite defense and a lot of there's a long list of quarterback acts like Josh who have looked bad playing the Patriot defense like it was. He's not likely to see defense like that or as good as that the rest of the year until December twenty. Yeah, I was gonna say not until we play the Patriots again. You're right, you know. Fortunately for Josh, you got to go against a really good defense all the training camp, so he got he's got a great look at the second best defense in the league statistically in the Buffalo Bills all throughout training camp. But yeah, he starts off the game over five yesterday or rough start, and maybe that's something that the Bill's coaching staff address is moving forward. And maybe they did try and script some early easy completions, but it may be a deal where Josh Allen's the type of quarterback you want to get him a couple of easy completions early confidence up, get him in a rhythm, and oftentimes you will see that with a young quarterback. And then to his point about Zay Jones, I'm not gonna sit here and say that I know more than Brandon Being and staff about personnel, and they need to bring up Duke Williams. But having a Robert Foster out of that game yesterday was big. Robert Foster is an absolute burner. And when you have a team playing that much man to man, the crossing routes are so tough to cover. When you have a guy as fast as Robert Foster, it's harder to play cover zero when you know you have another deep threat. You know, yesterday truly John Brown was the only guy that could take the top off the defense. You know Isaam McKenzie likely can his smaller receiver that his strength isn't necessarily the passing. You know, he's more of a utility guy. But not having a Robert Foster and then not having Devin Singletary, Devin Singletary is a matchup nightmare. As much as the Bills run their empty sets and split him out. You put a linebacker over him. You put Jawan Bentley at two hundred and fifty five pounds, a land of Roberts at two fifty. You put those guys over Devin Singletary, He's gonna burn him. Well, that a lot that makes you put more dbs on the field. Then you put him in the backfood, you motion him back in, you run the ball, and you can put a lot of stress on the defense with a guy that's as fast as Devin Singletary. It's take a call here from Mike and Lakeview. Hello, Mike, welcome to the show. Hey, how are you doing Nah. First thing I'd like to say is Eric Wood, sorry to see your career on that way. That was that was horrible. That was hard to take. I appreciate that when it comes to football, there's a complexion to the game. It's it takes on its own personality as it goes along. And to dismiss the fact that we had so many blown calls like the interception and whatnot, it turns things. The game can turn on one play. Everybody knows that good they're bad. You can't dismiss it. And Steve Fasker said, well, that's part of the game. It's it is part of the game. But any one of those minute attributes to the game can take so much away and give so much to it that it's it's you know, it's it's remarkable. So when you watch the game, yeah, I think what you Mike, I know, I understand what you mean. And when you lose a game like that, the calls that are questionable or just outright wrong are really doubly frustrating because you know how big a difference they make. And you look back at that game and I was kind of thinking about it, and you know, as Bills fans you always get this this complex about how it's all against us and the Patriots always get all the calls and stuff, and I thought about this one and I didn't do it too much, but I remember one jumped out. I mean, one call that the Patriots got that was wrong. I thought was an intentional grounding on Tom Brady when he threw the ball away out in front of Julian Edelman. No question, he was throwing the football away, but Edelman was running in the direction of the ball and Brady threw it on the ground out in front of him, and they called it intentional grounding. I thought, I was shocked by that call, and I would have been really hot if they'd have called that against the Bills in that way. And I thought, wow, that's something that I don't know why that came out, but you know, Brady stepped up in the pocket, Edelman was coming across. He wasn't near the football. It's probably about five to seven yards out in front of him and on the ground. But I was really surprised at that call. So, you know, and I get it. You can go back and nitpick every single call in it and and we do that a lot, particularly in close games when every single call had a ripple effect and when the outcome was so much in doubt. But I just hesitate to say, you know that this game was vastly different than every other NFL game that was played over the weekend. Another tough call that this one against the Bills, was the holding call in Mitch Morse Josh Allen scrambles and I don't even know that Mitch Morris has a hold of Butler at the time. But Butler does the classic aren't defender or running back, quarterback, whoever running past you, if you can't make the play, pretend like you're getting held and flail your arms up in the air and fade back. And he baited the ref Butler baited the referee into throwing a holding call. I think New England probably does it better than anybody else, you know. I know they're coached to do We've had guys come over from the Patriots. I'd say, yes, we're coached to do those types of things. It's smart play, but it was a costly penalty at that point of the game in the second half. Let's go to Tom and West Seneca. Hello, Tom, Welcome, you're on the air with us. John, Steve, Eric, thanks for having me, and Eric, thank you for being a great Buffalo Bill on the field and off the field. That I hope you're enjoying your retirement. I appreciate that. Now I'm going to keep my comments relatively brief. This is a game that we didn't deserve to lose. At the end of four quarters. It should have been either ten to ten or the Bills thirteen to ten. I did some math here. Now I'm gonna have to plagiarize a little bit and say that our defense they played like poet warriors. They were phenomenal. And now for my big gripe and big takeaway of the game was a cheap shot on Josh on Josh Allen. What good is concussion protocol gonna do if they're gonna throw the flag, penalize your fifteen yards, not eject you, and not find you. That was clearly flagrant. We all know that a man hit like that there could be killed, are very seriously injured a concussion. Now, going on what Steve commented a couple of weeks ago, last week, a week before, we can't send josh Ellen back in her next week or maybe even the week after because we look like Steve was saying, if you send the guy in too soon after a concussion injury, he's going to get it's easier to get it. He's more prone to another concussion. That being said, gentleman, all let choose takeover, Thank you very much. Yeah, I look, he's in protocol. I don't know when he's coming back, but I think you're jumping to conclusions. He might play against Tennessee. He might after Tennessee is the bye week. They might save him, right, We don't know when he's coming back. Yeah, we don't know. There's no they won't get any word. They won't tell us. We'll have to. We'll have to. We'll watch practice on Wednesday, see what kind of shape he's in, see if he's got a red jersey on or non contact, if he's limited or not. We'll just have to wait and see because they you know, he can't talk to the media while he's in concussion protocol, and they won't say anything. Right, and he leaves the game and he jogs off the field, which is always a great sign, but you know, without without the info, and the concussions can be so you know, it's such a fluid situation. You might feel great enough to run off the field, but then the next day feel terrible, So we'll have to wait and see. I will say this, Having a backup quarterback like Matt Barkley, who's in the second year under Brian Dayball, played in games last year and played well, really well against the Jets last year, and then he played extremely well this preseason, you know it's not a situation one of the Bills. If they have to play Matt Barkley, that that that you're writing the Bills off as a surefire loss. A lot of teams around the league you get their backup quarterback in the game and things changed dramatically. I don't think there's a huge drop off from Josh Allen to Matt Barkley. And if you read my Twitter throu throughout the game yesterday, there was a lot of fans before the injury that wanted him in there. But think about it, I think that he's different. He's not the same as Matt, and he does have some gifts, So I think why say it won't be different. I think the play selection and the game plan will be different with Barkley in there. If he is indeed taking reps all week and he's going to be the guy. I think the play selection and what you're asking him to do is gonna be much different than it is for Josh Allen. Yeah, he definitely does not have the same athleticism, but he has different skill sets. He's extremely accurate, you know, he's way more experienced, been around. Maybe he can punish teams for some of these cover zero looks, identify him quicker. Whatever it may be. But I was encouraged especially, and I talked to Matt last night. I saw him at dinner and I told Matt, I said, to come in cold like that and make that throw on that third and nine, that first one. I mean, that is gutsy. Yeah, that is gutsy. The problem is when you only dress two quarterbacks on game day. A lot of times, you know, if Matt Barkley has Davis Webb in uniform, he might have sat in the pocket a little bit longer, he might have taken a few more shots, maybe scrambled a little bit at times. But yesterday he couldn't take a shot, so he would get rid of the ball so fast. Because when you're the last dude, I mean, where do we go from there do we go Micah hide or get Cole Beasley taken snaps? Who knows David Swabon, by the way, is the practice squad quarterback? And who knows if he gets added to the fifty three. Tom Brady talked about the hit on Josh Allen this morning on his radio show in Boston, And when we come back from the break, we're gonna hear that. Come on back and let us know what you think. It is. One Bills Live presented by Klata Health from the Seneca Studios in Orchard Park. This is Buffalo Bills Radio. Welcome Back. One goes Live. John Murphy, Steve Tanscer, and Eric Woods with us for a couple more minutes. So I mentioned this, We're talking about the hit on Josh Allen yesterday and Tom Brady talked about it this morning on his radio show on w e I Radio in Boston. Listen to what Brady said. Actually, I had a play like that up in Buffalo early in my career where I was scrambling up the right side and you know, tried to hold onto the ball and I tried to slide late and guy hit me and my helmet flew about ten yards away. You know, it kind of riled up their whole sideline, and uh, you know it just I remember the next day, Coach Belichick said to me, I'll never forget this. He said, hey, Brady, if you want to have a career in this league, you know, when you're running like that, you either throw the ball away or you slide. So I'll never forget Coach Belichick telling me that. And I've kind of taken to that, you know, I think that's you know, a lot of quarterbacks suit who do run um. You know, it's it's you're trying to make yards and it's great, you know, at the same time, you're susceptible to you know, big hits um, you know. And that's again, whether it's flagged or not, or whether it's a penalty. I mean, that's a lot of the rules have changed over the years. But you know, from a quarterback standpoint, you know, I feel like it's always best to try to be available to the team, and it's try to take you risk reward and so forth. And again, nobody likes to see anybody get hurt out there, you know, And and you know, from my own experience, you know, I try to do the best I can to avoid, you know, any big shots like that Tom Brady and his radio show. Yeah, I would say he tries to make himself available. He's forty two years old. He's been available for all these years, right. The best ability is availability. I mean, particularly for a guy like him and he's you know, a guy like Patrick Mahomes, a guy like Drew Brees who is not available. The best ability is when you're the guy. You got to make sure you line up every week. And that's one of the things I've been on the play calling a little bit about through four weeks is some of the design quarterback runs. Josh is naturally going to scramble at times. He is going to pick up yards with his legs. That's one of his greatest abilities. You want to take that away from him. And there's crucial points of the game, and I mentioned this before, there's crucial points of the game where it's worth taking a shot. There's worth some contact because you're trying to win the football game. And maybe that third and eighth that Josh was trying to convert, that third and nine where he was going past the six, maybe that's an instance where you want him to take some contact. But unfortunately now you might be playing this week without your starting quarterback. And in the NFL, if you lose running back, defensive end, almost any other player on the team, that point spread will move, maybe a half a point a quarterback. It could be a full touchdown. It moves. And so Brady's point is spot on at the quarterback position. As much that goes into the quarterback position is important. It is for the team each and every week. You have to be available. I'd say one more call while Eric joins us here, WHILEY and cheek dwaga, hello, WHILEY go ahead, you're on the here. How are you doing guys right? I think Josh has got to realize there's no letter I in team. You know, He's got ten other guys out there, you know, and he's trying to play I don't want to say superhero, but you know, trying to be a one man game. I think he's just got a you all. Yeah, it was I play within himself, I guess is probably the best way to put I heard you're saying, well, I mean, I want to get Steven and Eric on this, but let me say, see, Mike, Josh did not play well today. But I thought he was confused mostly. You know, I don't think it was hero ball or let me take care of this. I think it was like, man, I've never seen that before. I think there's some of that. There's a lot going on yesterday. This game had a lot of layers, uh, and it was a it was a great big onion. So you know, we were all watching stuff unferral, some good, some bad. But I think there were times when, yeah, Josh, he tries to go deep a little too much. He simply, you know, tries to make a play when it's not there to be made. I think had costs him interceptions up virtually every game. And I think there's sometimes when he just doesn't look to his check downs quickly or often enough, and I think that sometimes gets him into trouble. Not all compounds. Yeah, when you're struggling in a game, when you start the game over five and your completions aren't there and you're not moving the football, it can force you to try and make big plays. And when he forced the ball down the field on his first interception, the safety made an easy interception, it was almost like a punt return for him. You know, the way the wall hung up in the air. And then we mentioned the one interception to Zay Jones. I thought that was a worthy shot one on one cover. He's making a shot down the field and he throws it off his back foot so he's unable to get it all the way there. But then the interception he threw on the run down the sideline where Dawson Knox and za Jones are both standing in that area. That's a ball that's simply just got to be thrown out of bounds. Hey, Erk, we gotta let you go, and we're happy to have you on the broadcast and your week will be busy again. Right. You got an ECC broadcast in Atlanta on Saturday, Georgia Tech yep SO, four pm UNC at North Carolina at Georgia Tech. North Carolina's coming off of an almost upset against Clemson and Georgia Tech's a fascinating story. Not the boar the bill those listeners with acc football, but when you convert from a triple option offense to a now spread offense, it is incredible. Their offensive line had to gain over one hundred pounds combined. You know, they're playing offensive line at two sixty and now they're trying to pass block. They've never These guys are are former high school defensive lineman that we're just cut blocking and firing off the ball like a defensive line. And now they got him trying to take pass sets. It's a It's a fascinating deal. But Georgia Tech is really struggling this year. Hopefully they can keep it a game or otherwise we're gonna be preparing a lot of block coverage like we did last week for Holy Cross Syracuse when you would have got Tennessee and UH and the Bills. I mean, initially, I don't I don't care about points spite, but it should be a no matter who's the quarterback for Buffalo, it should be an easier task. I would think this Sunday, not easy, but easier than yesterday for sure. Definitely in Tennessee doesn't come in with a prolific offense. They have some playmakers a J. Brown on the outside, Marcus Mariota. One thing he has done a good job of this year, which is the reason they're two and two, is he hasn't thrown any interceptions. So their defense is playing well. I think they're fourth in the league statistically in yards per game or sorry, and points giving up per game. So they're doing some good things defensively. But this is a game the Bills are gonna go down to Nashville. The last time we played down in Nashville, I was on the team, and I'll tell you what it felt like a home game there. And I've talked to a lot of people around town. They're gonna be down to Nashville for the game. Should be a ton of fun. I'm sticking around for the night. Me and the wife are gonna have a nice little date night post game down in Nashville. So really really looking forward to about another back to back calling games next weekend, hopefully a Bill's victory, get back on track, and you know what to put it in perspective, if you would have said, hey, through the first quarter of the season, the Bills are gonna be three and one, I think you would lock it in. And if the Bills can get a victory this week and get to four and one at the buy I know everybody would have taken four and one at to buy. So this week becomes crucial. You get in the Bills, get this week and then the BUYE week, and they have some soft tissue injury, US, Robert Froster groin, singletary hamstring, Taren Johnson hamstring. Maybe some of these guys start coming back and watch out because the Bills can really make a run. You get some of those playmakers, some of that speedback on the field. Thanks Eric, thanks for this, Thanks for yesterday a good job. We'll see you again this weekend. I appreciate you. Pleasure Eric Woods joining us on Mondays after the Bills game. We're taking a break and we're coming back. Chris Brown, Bills insider from Buffalo Bills Doom. I'm going to join us more of your phone calls as well. Hello, Bills Radio Network, Sporty date update from One Bill's Drive to Bills players here today, workouts, film review review today, the first Monday I'd worked this year after a loss. Josh Allen is in concussion protocol after that helmet. The helmet hit from Patriot safety Jonathan Jones knocked him out of the game early in the fourth quarter. Jones flag for unnecessary roughness and under league rules he may be subject to a penalty of fine coming up. Senior vice president of a Fishing in Al Riveron says his review the hit showed that it did not meet the criteria fitting of an ejection from the game. Okay, Bill's had Tom Brady to one hundred and fifty yards in an interception, is first of the season yesterday and a forty five point nine passer raiding He averaged just three point eight yards per pass attempt. A Buffalo defense was outstanding yesterday in the loss, but in the end the Bills were outscored sixteen to ten and got their first loss of the year. NFL has suspended Raiders linebacker Vantes Berfect for the rest of the season. He's been suspended following his helmet the helmet hit on Colts tight end Jack Doyle Burfett dejected from the Raiders win over the Colts yesterday for lowering the helmet to make contact early in the second quarter. NFL Network says Berfect will appeal his suspension for the rest of the year. Chris Brown, Bills insider from Buffalo Bills, Tex No, because I always put you on the spot in the middle of your segments. Christ you want stay another hour? And you never say no? And I feel like, I'm I know you're a busy man. What you got lunch coming up? At one forty five? Like? Wow, how long do you want to stay? You want to do one segment? Entice him? How many segments you want to do? I don't know. Let's set the ground rules right here. That's ten after already, So you guys are way way late on your clocks, so that that's on you, it is on me. I just stay two segments, two segments. I decided, Can you do two segments? Or you think? Chris Brown Bills inside of Buffalo Bills dot Com in studio with us Chris, We're asking our listeners today and viewers about their biggest takeaway from the Bills loss to the Patriots. I want to get yours. Can I give me mine? Can I give you mine? You're gonna you guys run the show. So I mean, I don't know why you think I'm gonna be able to go against whatever you want to do. The NFL is great. Two great defenses. I love the fact that people can appreciate a great defensive game still in this era of the NFL. The NFL is great. That game yesterday was great evidence towards that. I am bitterly disappointed at the Law, not because you know, the Bills played well defensively, outstanding defensively, but that they were this close to winning and did not. But my overall biggest takeaway, Chris, is the NFL was great even when there's not a kind of point speed scored. It was an entertaining game for being a low scoring game, and I think a lot of us thought it was going to be low scoring knowing this caliber the two defenses that were in this game. I believe, and I still even after the game, believe this that the Bills defense had the taller task in this one because they were going against the better offense, or at least the more consistent one. And it was my opinion that they matched what the defense for the Patriots did, if not exceeded it. And I know on the stat sheet it'll look like the Patriots defense kind of ruled the day because they got the takeaways that they did. And we know that, you know, analytics and everything else says if you're the team with more of the takeaways, more often than not, you're going to win the game. But all I know is yards allowed, touch downs allowed on possessions, you know, right now, I mean, as great as the Bills defense has played from start to game four in this season, the stat that maybe stands out to me more than any other Okay the Bills right now are they have given up the third fewest touchdown drives this season six okay, defensively, six touchdown drives. They've been on the field for the second most possessions in the league forty nine and they and still they've given up the third fewest touchdown drives six out of forty nine this season. That is an amazing number to me considering how much they've been on the field. Because everybody's talking about how the San Francisco defense is off to this great start, they've been on the field for thirty five possessions. The Bills have been on the field for I mean fourteen more than that, right, it's a full game. Yeah, yeah, So, I mean they've been unreal this year, Bills. The Bills are given up number five in the league. They've given up fifteen point five, now fifteen point eight points a game. The team they're playing this week, Tennessee's given up fifteen point five. They're number four overall. Then the Cowboys and the Bears, and of course the Patriots given up less than a touchdown and an extra point, and if you take away the non offensive touchdowns, the Bills are given up twelve points a game. Forty eight points they've given up this year offensive scores. I mean, it's just it's really really, really impressive. Yeah. And the Patriots are right there as well. I mean they've yes, yeah, they've got they've given up what they've got an interception pick six last week that it counts against them, and maybe a kick return as well. Ye, So they they're the same. Say they're great to get against these to give credit where it's due, they're great. They're a great defense. And I think the thing that the two the two units have in common is they play great team defense. It is an eleven man unit. You know, you look at the Chicago Bears. They got Khalil Mack, a team Hicks. I mean superstar level players. Yeah, I mean so you know, Aaron Donald, guys that can just single handedly take over the game. I mean you can't. You don't have that. I mean, you've You've got really, really, really good players here in Buffalo at every level of your defense. But they're not They're either too young and inexperience to be superstar caliber yet Tremaine Edmonds being an example, or they're just not quite at that super super elite level. But you put them all together in some of their parts, holy cow, like really really good. They tackle really well. That was shown up. That showed up yesterday. A couple of times in space they had a one on one tackle, made the tackle. Same thing with the Patriots, they didn't. They don't miss tackles. All these good defenses are the same thing. First guy to the ball, makes the tackle and it. You know, yards are hard to come by and as a result, points are hard to come by for both those colors. That's what stood out for me with the Patriots defense. By the way, what they don't mis tackles right, well, did the first guy remember one going into that game? And six percent mistach Yes, lowest mistackle rate in the league going into the game. And you saw why yesterday. I mean, how many times in the first three weeks did you see Josh escape initial wrap ups or contact in the offensive backfield that did not happen? Maybe more than once yesterday? And did you guys have mentioned the Bills are pretty good And I keep thinking about the one James White catch Matt Milano single up and Mattmilonald just dropped him. It was a great open field tax. Yes, it was great. It's like a two yard game first and ten or something. It was like, Wow, Chris Brown, Bills inside a Buffalo Bills dot Com is with us. We'll take your phone calls. Biggest takeaway from yesterday's lost at the Patriots. But I want to talk about Josh Hammond a little bit here, Chris, And you know I've got the question already. What does this mean? Concussion protocol? Tell us what it means and what you know about the future for Yeah, So it's a five step returned to participation protocol. So right now he's in the rest and recovery phase. You know, he where he has to get is back to where his baseline test is. So you know he was exhibiting concussion symptoms yesterday after the game, put in the protocol. He probably came in this morning, took a test, and if he's still showing symptoms and his brain activity is not back to what his baseline test brain activity is, then he's going to stay in the protocol and he's going to rest and recover. If he gets back to baseline numbers, then he goes to step two, which is light aerobic exercise. And then again they check the next day after your first day of light aerobic exercise, are you still at the baseline level. If you're not well, then you stay there or you go back to rest and recovery. So there are five steps that he's got to get through, and depending on the severity of the symptoms, the persistence of those symptoms, or the return of those symptoms, if he takes a step forward, is going to determine how long he's going to be off the practice field. And the important thing for fans and no two important things I think are a there are no timetables right and by they don't provide updates, we won't know. No, Basically, all coach McDermott can say is he is still in the protocol or he's out of the protocol. He really cannot give details, as you know, I mean, that's the rules of the league. Yeah, they can't say what step he's in. Now. We can get clues as to what step he's in based on what we see him doing out on the practice field, but if he's not out there, we're kind of in the dark. Yeah, and that's we just have to watch and see how he progresses. Now, it also comes to back now he jogged off the field and was you know, you would think too that if he comes back today and it's you know, as baselines or whatever they are, and there's there is a case that he'll start out a little quicker if it wasn't serious to begin with. But they got to go through everything and one of the reasons, the concerning thing was that he had to go off the field yesterday to get further evaluated in the locker room. So something was going on. Well, that's just the rule. You have to once you've been taken off the field and you've been examining the tent by the independent neurologist. Then they say, we got to put you through the full test inside where they run the full gamut of you know, being evaluated for a head injury, and then you know, to take that a step further. Guys don't read anything into him jogging off the field as well, well, he only got a little ding. That doesn't apply here. I mean, let me here's a perfect example. Carlos Williams when he was with the Bills. There was a game, he finished the game Monday morning, he wakes up and he's all over the map with his head, and he comes in, he gets tested, he's diagnosed with a concussion twenty four hours later, which can happen. It's there's a twenty four hour window there, and sometimes players don't feel any of the symptoms at all postgame, and then the next morning they wake up and they're like whoa, Like what the heck's going on? And bang that's when the concussion symptoms surface. It's usually within twenty four hours. And if Josh cannot play the Sunday at Tennessee, we're looking at Matt Barkley and I would guess most likely you may have a thought on this Davis Wept right, the practice squad's court quarterback. Well, yeah, if they know they're not gonna have Josh, they're probably gonna have to call Davis Webb up up and make him active. Yes, all right, let's talk about Josh by the way. We'll get to your calls in a moment. Let's talk about Josh Allen's game. Aside from the head hit, which is serious enough, he was unsettled, Chris I thought right from the start, and we knew that the Patriots would show him different things. They did, and Josh appeared unsettled, uneasy, and started the game kind of throwing it all over the place and almost got worse as it went along. I think what he was not trusting what he was seeing because the disguises were good by the Patriots, and that inability to mentally process what he was seeing translated to his physical ability in the game, because I think there were times where he hurried throws because he thought he saw something and wanted to get it off quick. I think his feet were never under him with a solid base, and that's why we saw passes sailing, passes going into the dirt, passes going wide to their targets. His feet were probably as bad as they were last year, when establishing a consistent base underneath him was up and down and uneven last year. That happened yesterday. Now people can say, well, Josh regressed or you know whatever. He was also facing a damn good defense that was giving him an awful lot of pressure in addition to those disguised looks and a complicated defense, right, and a complicated defense. So I think it was a combination of going against one of the best defenses in football. Those defenses are gonna make any quarterback look bad. Now you add that in with an inexperienced quarterback, and I think you're gonna get what you got yesterday. Now, I think what also was working against Josh was his own competitive nature. I think there are times where Josh is so competitive that it almost works to his own detriment or incidents. In mind, all four sacks were on third downs yesterday. All four times he got sacked on third down. One time he took his team out a field goal range couldn't even kick a fee goal. The other time it went from a forty four yard to a forty nine yard or Now it's not Josh's fault that Houshka missed it from forty nine. That's well within Stephen Houshka's range, So that's not on him, but it doesn't help the cause, I guess, is what I'm saying. And then the other two times, you know you're out of field goal range, and then on top of that, and I don't know where the fault lies here, but this is the third consecutive week where this team has had to burn time outs because they can't get the playoff on time. Whether it's because it's not getting into them, whether they're not breaking the huddle, whatever, the part of the operations that's at fault here is. The bottom line is it's an issue now, and it was exacerbated this past Sunday, maybe more than we've ever seen it to this point in the season. So you've seen it for three weeks now. Do you think it's better that it might be three or four different things causing it or is it should it be just one that they can fix. I don't care how many things it is. It's got to get fixed that. That's the bottom line. You can't be burning. You can't be burning. They burned three time outs yesterday because they couldn't get the play and that just cannot have and then took it to lay a game when they couldn't get into yes because they didn't have any timeouts left. Yeah, let's take your phone call. Are you going to a phone call? Yeah, I'm gonna plug in here, fix your your thing. Rex in Tanawanna, Hi Rex here on the air of this go ahead. Rex. Hey, guys, thanks for taking my call. Thanks. Um my observations from the game yesterday, I'm gonna start with Josh Allen. Uh, definitely was don impressed to say the least. Um it was. I'm gonna blame blame him for the law solely those turnovers we don't have that he takes care of the football. I think we're walking out with a win. We're in the lead in the division. I mean, I hope he just learns from this. I don't know when he's gonna learn from it, but I hope this is the game he finally learns from it. I mean, now if he can even remember the game, but um, this is Uh. I just felt my heart sinking in my chest watching this, and I'm I'm gonna be looking for him to just improve with taking care of the ball. Okay, Yeah, fair enough. Yeah, and yeah, I think you'll learn. I think Josh is a good student. It's Chris's point. I was as competitive as they come, and I'm sure he's frustrated with the way that things went yesterday. I don't know about blame. I don't care about blame. I don't look to blame x or Y for the loss. Yeah, I'm I think he did play nervous yesterday. I thought his body language early in the game and the and the easy throws that he missed were telling, and I think it led to him playing the game a little bit differently than you would like to see him playing, and differently than we've seen him play earlier. Certainly, and at the core of it is the Patriot defense. But nevertheless, I mean that's Josh looked like he did early last year, not early this year. So far. That was tough. I'll call here from Chris on Grand Island. Chris joins us. Hello, Chris, welcome to the show. All right, thanks for taking my call. Sure, a couple of things I want to say. It looks to me like Zay Jones, seems a little too much like Calvin Benjamin to me where he's not playing defense, when he's on offense going after those balls. I think boltonptions that were against a Jones, that he could have done something a little bit better to try to prevent those interceptions. I think that Josh Allen's holding onto the ball way too long yesterday. I think that really killed us. That old line did great, and then he tried to scramble a few times. That's what caused all those sacks. And the Trey White Gronkowski hit last year it's very similar to one yesterday, both against New England, both if he I personally think that the guy that hit Antlon yesterday, I think he put his shoulder down. They say he was turning to avoid, but no, I think he put it into him. So I think that was a little vicious or that all right punt from Yorks. I think they should have be able to have an audible out of that. Well they're allowed to. They didn't. I mean, yeah, they should have, Yeah they should Well, yeah, they's an uncovered gunner. Yeah, they're a pass if you have any confidence in the work has to throw the football. I'm sure Steve has addressed this already based on the block punt and everything, but you got to adjust when you got creepers coming in from the outside, and you can't ask pat to Marco to block two guys on his side of the formation. That's just unfair. Did you see, and Eric, we talked about this first hour, but Eric Wood and I both came across somebody pointed out that the Giants did the same thing, uncovered the gunners and the Bills did not adjust. The Giants didn't get a block or anything right. Clearly, Patriots did homework and saw that and said let's try this, and they know Behorks and they were helped by the fact that the snap was a little low, so Bjork has had to bend down to take it off his shoetops and then stand up and then put I mean, that's an extra tenth of a second at least, and that's that's only going to help the guy get there in time to get a clean block, which you do it huge play, all right. Before we get to the break, they hit. We've talked about this a lot too the first hour, but we didn't talk to you about it. They headed hit the helmet, hit on Josh Allen, eject him, eject him, that's what I say. Yeah, the players, Stephen Eric said, not necessarily. Yeah. Here's the thing that really bothers me about this lowering the helmet thing. As an offensive player or a defensive player. When you are an offensive player and you're running with the football and you know you're going to absorb contact, what is your natural reaction to kind of ball up and protect yourself? Right, Well, what's gonna happen when you ball up? Your helmet's gonna go down? Duh? I mean, come on, though, he lowered his helmet, so it renders the hit, uh non ejectionable. Get the heck out of here with that. Come on, Steve, I mean every every player, when they see they're going to be absorbed contact, you ball up. It's just a natural defense mechanism. So now you're gonna fault the quarterback for balling up to protect himself and say, wow, that's not ejectionable because the guy lowered his helmet too. On offense. He didn't it that much, Steve, your thoughts now, he should have been should have been a penalty. I don't know that he should have been abjective because I'll tell you this, um when Jones is there, if you'll watch. He's got both feet planned and he's not running. He's kind of waiting. And then he does extend into Josh and trying and take him on, but he's not running at him. Um, it was a yeah, it was a helmet to helmet classic penalty. Uh, I mean talking about And here's the thing you go back on. You look at the Vantes perfect helmet hit from yesterday. That's that is ejectable. This one, it's close, but I don't I would. I would have said no. And when it happened live, I was like, oh, wow, you gotta I thought you might eject him. But as I look at a slow motion, actually I actually back away from that. Yeah, it's an absolute penalty, and I think he should be fined. But and the moment when it happened after I saw it in slow motion, I had to see it in slow motion to back off that because I was kind of wound up like everybody else. Uh, I'm okay with the way he's handle it. If he gets fined, okay. So here's the difference between that hit and the perfect The perfect hit is spearing. I don't think there's any question about that. This is not spear totally egregious. This is not spearing because, as Steve pointed out, he's he's kind of waiting at his flat footed. He's not do you know what I mean? Like, he's not right making a run at him for ten yars not airborne, right, he hasn't left his feet. But the bottom line is this, he's there and he has chance to make a tackle with his head up? Does he not? Yea, he has a chance to make a tackle with his head up. He chooses knowingly chooses not too not too. And that's my issue and that's why this is an injectionable hit in my estimation. Agree, I think it should be has a chance to hit him head up, he does not chooses not to. He turned into his helmet, not away from his helmet. There's a multi that's the thing where That's why I should be. You put your left shoulder into Josh there, you're not hitting him with your helmet, and he turned his right shoulder in to make sure helmet contact was made. I mean his multi thousand dollars fine coming his way? Right? Oh? Yeah, has to be that would be. Yeah. I think that's a must. I think so, and I agree with Micah Hyde by the way, too, they make that hit on twelve, they're out of the game. Not even a question. All right, we're gonna take a break. We've already negotiated the terms of Chris's release from the show. He's one more segment with us, so come on back. We'll take more phone calls. It is One Bill's Live, presented by Kalida Health for Company from the Seneca Studio. That's his Buffalo Bills Radio. Welcome back John Murphy and see Tansker One Bills Live. Midway through the show, we got Evan Washburn coming up at two o'clock today from the NFL on CBS. He was on the sidelines of yesterday's game. Chris, let's talk about replay challenges for a minute. We were talking about a break. It did not go well yesterday and almost predictably, I said it on the Area today. I've never seen a spot of the ball changed on a replay review, have you? I can't remember one, and believe me, I hate how arbitrary. Yeah, the spotting of the football is. And Steve, I remember Steve and I did a show when you were on vacation about trying to fix this and how the NFL should invest in you know, let's get some R and D going here. Basically, you can't tell me that if they have an electronic beam in tennis that determines whether a ball is in or out, that you can't have. We taught Steve and I did a show on this. You can't tell me that you can't have something that lines up as a track on the sideline that sends a beam across the field. It's just like your garage door opener, you know, the beam that if you walk over at the garage door goes up and doesn't chop your head off. Why can't we have a beam like that running across from sideline to sideline and you just get the people the hell out of the way, get him out of the way. And now you don't have the chain gang. You don't have another six guys you're paying every week. I mean, come on, you want to be a Phish in NFL. Let's go get the electronic beam, run it across and the and now the spotting of the football is an arbitrary anymore. You got a chip in the ball. And now you don't have Joe on one side of the field and Hector on the other going, is it over there six inches that'll allow us to fire the six guys that run the chain gang and pass the set. I'm not saying it. I'm not saying it's an easy job, but my god, it's there's gotta be a better way, man, there's gotta be a better way. Look at what Tennis does with that. But the point is they don't change spots. No, they don't play. They can, but they rarely, rarely, rarely do that. Yeah, it's a tough one to challenge because it's so arbitrary. Yes, yeah, guys, you're listen this. They can't fix review. They can't fix replay review until they fix the guy who's doing the review. Well yeah, but but here's the thing, Steve. But here's the thing. If you have that electronic eye running across the field with a chip in the football that identifies where the football went down, Brownie, in twenty years, I'll say you're a genius. But we're not going there now because it's not gonna happen. I'm just saying that's how you take the guy out of the So they hired the human element out CBS Mike Carry, Mike Pereira, Fox Terry McCauley NBC, Dean Blandino, NFL Network. All five of those, all four of those guys are more qualified than the guy they've got doing the Gene Sterrator is also when they're from CBS, Jene Sterrator, and he could do basketball for you too if you want it. But your point is, my point is the last guy in the room is the least qualified one that's left, and he's the one that now is doing the job that all those guys were qualified to do. Go down the list. Dean Blandino was brilliant at it. The whole system was set up for him to do it. It was he set it up. He knew how to use it, he knew when to step in and when it was consistent, it was good. He got then, he got the replays right, the reviews right. They were easily explainable, the rules were upheld, and everybody was happy when he reviewed it and gave you the reason. Even if it was denied, he'd tell you the solid reason. Now you got the sixth guy down the list of the people who are qualified to do the job left, he's before he turned the lights out. They gave him the job before you really turned up the volume. Let me see. I don't disagree with you, But what does they have to do with yesterday's challenges by the Bills? Are they with a bad challenges? Yeah? Because he didn't get them. Well, it's only a good challenge if you get if you win every other challenges. Did they screw up the replay review? I don't know that. Yeah, which the sideline interception to Zay Jones where the get the guy was had come down with it one foot downs, Zay Jones is standing out of bound, hand on the ball, balls dead. Then the other foot comes down, balls out of bounds. No, it wasn't out of bounds because they guy in New York didn't catch that and now it's going the other way as an interception. You tell me that that didn't make a difference about that one. That was not a challenge though, that of course was the It was a review, right, it's a worse review. Yes, it's worse. I don't know if it's worse. It was bad. But what about the uh the past interferencey? No, the Bills challenge at right offensive pass interference and what about the uh um the spot of the ball. I just think those are a weak challenges that you're never not never, you're really gonna get And I might question the challenge, I get it. My point is you're you're you're challenging to somebody who's ain't gonna get it right anyway, that's my point the challenge. Sorry, they missed the challenge. Reviewed thing now is that joke? Lad and his staff just flat out miss stuff? Oh yeah, I mean the intentional grounding by Brady. I mean, Jerry Hues is arguing with that guy for thirty seconds after the play, saying are we throwing the flag? He's going like this, where's the flag? This is intentional grounding. The ball did not get back to the line of scrimmage, and instead of punting ten yards deeper, they're just punting the ball away. Well, I thought the ball did get past the line of scrimmage. No, not on that one. Not when they were coming towards the tunnel endy. No way it reached the line of scrimmage. Absolutely not. And he didn't throw it to any one, no one. No intentional grounding. And I mean, and and there's a part of me that really openly wonders do the ref say, wow, it's fourth down? Anyway, what are you worried about ten yards? But lost to believe me? I mean, you don't think conversations like that go on ridiculous. And then how about the one for pass interference where they picked it up. Oh, there's no interference there. Yeah, he just threw the flag because you know he was you know, he thought it was a tissue in his pocket and needed anymore uncatchable. Maybe that's the big gray that's the gray area too. I can't catch it because the guy's holding me. I'd have been three yards. Please say that, then, please say that. Yeah, I hear there was no foul on the play. The ball was deemed uncatchable. I got picking up the flag. There's a lot of years to that. And it's and I, like I said earlier in the show, we're kind of going off the handle here because it's really it's trip really frustrating when the game is all hinge, there's one play out there that either team could make to win the game, and you've got this string of instances throughout the game that we just highlighted that would have made a differ. Yeah, I could have made it different. The point was, and I don't want to keep going on. It was I didn't like the decision to challenge those two. I thought they were got you low percentage challenges. Let's go to Steven Rochester. I see you're on the air. Hey, guys, thanks for taking my call. Sure. Yeah, I'm an old timer, been watching the Bills since the Joe ferguson days. And I get a kick out of just getting a chance to talk to Steve Tasker. He's one of my heroes. That's nice thinking. That's the things that are driving me nuts on Sunday afternoons is how flagrant the defenders are on the path coverage as far as the rules to me are still after five yards you can't touch the guy right. No, they've given some leniency there, but I'd like you guys to talk about that a little bit. And the other thing that frustrates me as a Buffalo fan is with with all the new receivers we got, why aren't they breaking some long ones? Why is nobody getting open? And uh, I'll just let you guys talk about to talk to you for hours, but I'll hang up and listen to your response. See, let's let's tackle the Patriots pass coverage and how they are and have been for years expert rule benders. Yeah, okay, they will clutch, they will grab, right, What the war about that? Right? And it still goes on clutching grabbing all the way down the field. Gilmore got flagged for it once um on the on the pass that actually John Brown caught anyway, despite the fact that there was DPI um but Jones was doing it. On the other side, Jackson was doing it. I mean, they they're they're probably coached to do that. Get away with what you can get away with, and let's feel out the game. Let's see how tight these officials are going to call it. They can't call it every play. They're not gonna bog the game down that much. And unless it egregious, we're probably not gonna get flagged for it. And I know Eric would even mention in the broadcast with you Murph that the Patriots flip it around, are experts at embellishing when they are held, whether it's a defensive pass rusher, whether it's you know, an offensive player getting held by a defender. They embellish to draw the attention, to draw the contact. And you know, that's just kind of how they operate, and they get away with some of it and they get some of it called for their benefit, right, neither one of you. I mean, look, I know the officiating was a factory. It was frustrating. Yet pick play too, we forgot about that one. The pick, the offensive pass horse challenge, Yeah, yeah, was that? Was that an obvious pick? And it was a rub? It was that those kind of plays going on. I thought he deviated. I thought he deviated his pass route clearly stepped, clearly stepped in the path of the defender. I don't know if it was absolutely clearly stepped in the path. But he didn't make contact. It doesn't matter. It's like pump fake. That's that's a good play by him. If he didn't touch him. Now, if he tripped him at the back end of it, which again rule bending. Back to my point about rule bending, there's no nothing says you can't do that. Take a call here from you gotta physically stop the guy you can't like, Yeah, there has to be contact otherwise it doesn't count. Tim, And if you go ahead, Tim, you're in the air. Yeah. Dawson Knox made another great play yesterday, shown that he's given the opportunity he can make all those plays during the preseason. Tommy Sweeney did a great job, and yet the Bills started Lee Smith yesterday and four penalties later, they still kept down putting them back in. And that was including after the great play that the Knox made, they puts Lee Smith back in it. And I just couldn't figure that one out. Well, different roles and another thing, Tim, there's a lot of two tight endsets going on here. I'm looking at the snap counts here. Lee Smith had forty three percent of the offensive snaps. Dawson Knox had sixty, so he played a lot. They both played a lot, but Dawson played more than they're and they're two different players. I mean, these are different roles that they're filling. And let's not forget Lee Smith is in there too, chiefly block, pass protect or run block. And at the end of the day, Frank Gore has four and a half yards a carry against the number one run defense in football. Here's the problem. I know they're both called tight ends, they're playing two different positions. Yeah, they're both. Lee Smith is called a tight end. He's knocks might as well be a tight receiver. He's Yeah, they're they're not playing they're called tight ends. They're labeled tight ends. They practices, they're not, they're not. They're playing two different things, and they're almost to the point of one of them is not a tight end and the other one's not either kind of thing, you know what I mean. So that's that's why Lee Smith is in there. It seems like it seems to me that you put your playmakers in there and knocks me the great play again yesterday when he caught the pass following backwards. Yeah, I'll tell you what, Tim, I'm with you. I'd love to see Dawson Knox have a bigger role because he seems to be coming through target or opportunities. I think going forward we are going to see that. I think there is going to be a package of plays for him. He's just too athletic and too good in traffic. Yeah, I mean, it's not like he's getting tremendous separation from his defenders. He's just going up and making plays with guys draped all over him. And that's two weeks in a row he's done that. By the way. He's a tough guy too. He blocks, yeah, he hits right. But I think his greatest asset for this team is his athleticisms, and so I think going forward, because I don't get the sense that Tyler Croft is going to be ready anytime soon, because this was the role they envisioned for Tyler Croft, and now Dawson Knox has stepped into that role and performed capably, and so I think he's gonna get some more rope. He's gonna get some more opportunities, and going forward, I believe they are going to be a package of plays in the offense for him because he is a mismatch at six to five, two hundred and fifty eight pounds and the capability of running a four to five forty. That's a problem for defenses. It is a matchup problem. And at the core of what Brian Dable calls on offense every single week in his game plan, it is finding the mismatches. This kid is a mismatch probably fourteen out of sixteen games he's gonna play this year. Chris Um, what do you have on Buffalo bills dot com today? Your your top five, top three? Would you have to top three things we learned? That comes out right after, well about an hour or so after that. What's coming on the website? So we had a quotecheet today where we kind of take the best from around the locker room and they kind of, you know, the players kind of assess. I thought on the whole, they were largely positive, as much as this loss stung, as much as they felt they left the Patriots off the hook, which I think everybody can agree they probably did. H that they're compartmentalizing this loss pretty effectively, So you can read their comments at Buffalo bills dot com. Obviously, we'll have the quick hits right up off of what coach says it is press conference at four pm. And then tomorrow we'll have our statistical column that we have every week, noteworthy numbers where we're going to dive in deep where the Bills are sitting here at the quarter pole, where they are excelling, because there's a lot of areas where they are top three in the league right now, several areas, and not the conventional numbers that you're used to. We kind of dig a little bit deeper to find some interesting figures where the Bills are really excelling here after four games play. Look forward to that on Buffalo Bills dot com. Thank you, Chris. We gotta let you go. Thank Chris Brown. Bills Inside Yeah Yeah, One Bill's Life, presented by Kalada Health from the Seneca Studio. This is Buffalo Bills Radio. Fourth and goal from the one. He'll be joining us coming up after the top of the hour, John Murphy with Steve Tasker Man. There's just so much meat on this bone. See but I said it a couple of times, and I think we've we've talked about some of the points that we've also I think and we spend a little time out here gloss over the fact that just how good the Buffalo defense was yesterday, and Chris talked about some of the hidden stats that are in there. But holy Cole, you get an interception down on the goal line and take points off the board. After that was a ninety three yard drive and you pick it off in the end zone. They get nothing to hit the ball for like eight minutes. They went ninety three yards and they got zero out of it. That was huge. What a big play by the Bills by Mica High. And you know how rare is it that, you know, you see Tom Brady throw a red zone interceptions? Yeah, And we were watching this. I was watching this play on film with Eric Wood. There's no place to throw the football. He tried to fit it in over the top, and Micah Hide is at the pylon going towards the pylon with a receiver. He comes right off that receiver drops right back into the spot where Brady was trying to hit Edelman in the back of the end zone. Just stepped in and took it and it was, you know, he just stepped right out of the right, out of nowhere, really in Tom Brady's vision and picked that off. It was and everybody was covered. Brady was gonna have to just tuck it and throw it away or do something with it. He was trying to scramble, which he's not very good at obviously, but he's you know, they put together a nice drive. It really looked like the Patriots had really found something and they just snapped him off and they got to turn over their own. Patriots had not run the ball well all year, and they did not yesterday. They had twenty three rushing attempts there trying to get the ball to Sony Michelle. He wound up with seventeen that carries for sixty three yards and they had seventy four total yards on the ground. New Winglan did and a lot of it, I thought because of the playoff Tremine Edmonds buffal those second yearner, who I thought was outstanding. Eleven tackles, two of them tackles for losses. He was in on one pass defense. I thought Edmonds was really one of the many solid players on the Buffalo off or defense. Yesterday. Yeah, they played really well in the run game. Now he came out, the Patriots came out and they did put that one drive together. Where they where. They moved the football pretty effectively and did some of that on the ground as well. But for the most part you're write Termaine Edmonds was he was on the Patriots side of the line of scrimmage a lot, making tackles, filling the run gaps, and you know, you forget too that the thing about coming into this game, we knew that the offensive line of the Patriots was not one hundred percent. You know, Marshall Newhouse was playing a left tackle for them. Their center for the season had has out with an illness, so they had some guys that were, you know, suspect and not as experienced as the guys they thought they were gonna have when the season began, and I think it showed. The Bills made him pay for they could not run the football the all could not the Patriots, and or at least not effectively enough. And they forced the Patriots into some spots where you know, they tried to make some plays. It was just too tough. Yeah, it was just too tough for him. And Oliver had a solid game, I thought also, you know, and so did Star Lotulele. He had a good He had a solid game down inside as well. So yeah, you can't say enough about how the defense played. Uh, in a lot of ways, they were the best defense on the on the field, they uh, they were more successful against what I would consider a better offense than the Bills offense, certainly certainly a more proven quarterback. I mean, you got the goat over there in Tom Brady, and they he was struggling. He had less than fifty percent completions, forty five quarterback rating. I mean, it's in the top five all time of his worst performance as ever. So credit the Bills defense. Sorry, missed its a missed opportunity. And that's what I that's that's my you know or Twitter poll. The biggest takeaway from this loss of the Patriots, I really feel like as a missed opportunity, really missed opportunity. All Right, we'll get back to that your takeaways. We'll take more phone calls in the third and final hour of the show. We're gonna start the next hour of the show with Evan Washburn. He was on the sidelines for yesterday's game for the NFL on CBS. That's coming up next. Come on back. One Bill's Live, presented by Kalaida Health. Jones got a penalty for unnecessary roughness, which is subject to ejection, but there was no ejection yesterday. The NFL Senior Vice president of Officiating El Riverrun said the hit did not meet the criteria fitting for an ejection. Tom Brady held to one hundred and fifty yards and was picked once as first of the season, a passer rating of forty five point nine thanks to the Buffalo defense. In total, the Bills forced New England's offense three and out on seven of their twelve possessions before the final kneel downs. In the end, the Bills held the league's second i scoring offense to sixteen points, two hundred and twenty four yards and they lost sixteen to ten to the Patriots. Bontes Perfect of the Raiders is out for the rest of the year, suspended by the league. Suspended for his helmet the helmet hit on Colts ten and Jack Doyle yesterday. Berfect was ejected from the Raiders win over the Colts for lowering the helmet to make contact on the hit early in the second quarter. NFL Nework reports that Perfect will appeal the suspension. Bengals Pro Bowl wide receiver AJ Green will not play tonight against the Steelers. Could be out for a while, continuing to recover from his preseason ankle surgery. Welcome to the show. Welcome to our number three what's a head? Nothing? Well, are you laughing? Thanks for welcoming to the show. Yes, yes, you were talking to me right, I was talking to you and everybody. Steve Task, John Murphy here, We've got a special guest down the line. He was on the sideline yesterday. His job NFL on CBS sideline reporter and he had the Bills and the Patriots yesterday, studio host at CBS Sports Network. He's been with the networks in twenty fourteen. Really happy to have Evan Washburn on the line with us. Hello, Evan, John Murphy and Steve Task, you are here in Buffalo. Thanks for joining us. Hey, fella's always good to be with you. Evan. Let's what about the atmosphere in Orchard Park? Yes, said, two really good teams undefeated going in and you know, both with two really good defenses, it really turned out to be an exciting game to the atmosphere match it in your estimation, absolutely, And I had a healthy comparison or context in recent weeks being an Arrowhead for the Baltimore kans City game in week three, and look, Arrowhead is special. But something about yesterday it was up, you know, maybe a couple of notches even to what Kansas City brought in week three. And I think a lot of it, to your point, Steve, had to do with the build up and the fact that Buffalo is coming into that game three and OZ and finally feeling like they're in a legitimate spot to be able to maybe knock down New England. And it was like a boxing match, man. I mean the way those two defenses played and the offenses on both sides were pretty inept. It felt like whoever's gonna be standing last might win it. And obviously New England, based off of a couple of key factors special teams being one of them, was able to sneak away with it. Yeah. Well, I really like that comparison, Evan, And you know, you know what I like also is the fact that you can have a game like that which was totally defensive oriented, and most people feel pretty good about watching that game. I thought it was a classic, great NFL game, and you didn't have to see forty points for anybody, you know what I mean? Yeah, and I think for those of us. And that's what's so great about that Bill's fan base, and I mean you could say this about New England's as well, as they appreciate quality football and when you can have a defense like what Buffalo was able to do against arguably the best quarterback to ever do it, I mean, he looked as frustrated guys as I'd seen Tom since. Maybe I was trying to think back to that twenty fifteen AFC Championship game where they lose in Denver, he gets hit thirteen times, Denver goes on to Super Bowl fifty they went in. That's really the last time I've seen Tom that sort of out of sorts in the pocket, floating balls, seeing guys come in and just having no real answer. And again, if you're a football fan, you can appreciate the rarity of what Buffalo was able to do. What's your big takeaway from this game for the Patriots and for the Bills. For the Patriots, it's that the running game. I think they wouldn't use the word concern Steve as you know that they're not as worried about balance necessarily. Bills not a believer that you have to have both in a game, but they're going to need to be able to go to the running game in times like yesterday where they just can't find any success through the air based off of what a secondary's doing. And the running game was such a pivotal part of their run to a Super Bowl last year, and there's a lot of factors as to why it's not been successful. Most of it has to do with the departure of guys like Trent Brown, Rob Gronkowski and then injuries now across the line into James Devlin. But for a group that doesn't like excuses, it's something they're going to have to figure out a way to fix. And for Buffalo as much as I'm sure we will, And you guys talk about Josh Allen development now his health obviously, but that that defense is special, man. I mean, I thought they outplayed New England's defense, and New England's off to a historic start on that side, Evan Washburn on the line with us. He had the sideline view for the NFL on CBS yesterday, the Bills and the Patriots. It was a rough game for Josh Allen. Let's put the health aside for a second or Evan, but um, it was difficult to watch him struggle like he did and clearly, even you know, upon watching the video again today, I thought he just did not seem comfortable with what he was seeing from New England's defense. Did you get that sense down on the sideline? Absolutely? And look, New England will do that to experience quarterbacks e Ben Roethlisberger in Week one. But I think what to me was surprising was that all of the conversation leading up to the game that we had with Josh, with Sean, Brian day ball with Dan was about just taking what's there and after that second and third hitch, if you don't have it, get rid of it or or make the smart play. And it just felt like all that was thrown out the window early in that game, and even in opportunities where he could set his feet, his footwork seemed completely off balance. And I think that whatever happened in that second quarter that allowed them to settle down and find subsess And I think it was really just Frank Gore running the ball so well that seemed to help calm things. But Josh went into that game, it would appear, wanting to sort of prove he could go toe to toe with New England, and it's just it's not the right approach. Yeah, we want to I want to move away from the Bills, and I don't know if we want to do it this quick. I was gonna move over to the breads. You got something else I do if I may, Yeah, go ahead. The CBS cameras did a great job, Evan of catching a sideline discussion, pretty heated discussion between Brian Dabo and Josh Allen after one of those interceptions. You're on the sidelines. You probably noticed that, and I think it's kind of healthy. In fact, I love the fact that it was followed up by Sean McDermott sitting down next to Josh to sort of counsel them. Also, what do you make of all that? Yeah? I thought I thought we covered that nicely in the broadcast, because you're right, we caught the heated exchange if you want to call it that or just strong words from his coach, Brian day Ball about making better decisions with the football, and then Sean McDermott followed a few minutes later and offered some words and you could just see that Josh was nodding his head an acknowledgement of the fact that he needed to be better. And it was one of those moments I gave a report about exactly that, in terms of Sean making the point to sit there next to Josh. And I don't need to remind you guys of this, but he is a young kid that is clearly passionate and wanting to prove that he is a legitimate starting quarterback that can play at a really high level. And I think his physical gifts at times getting the way of maybe making the right decision. And it's just going to be a constant reminder from that coaching staff. But I mean, Steve seen it plenty. He may have been on the sidelines for some of it. But Josh McDaniels, Bill O'Brien, they get some heated back and forth with a guy named Tom Rady. So this isn't something just because you're a pro or you're a high pick or you're a highly paid QB that you can't get yelled at. What's your take on the hit on Josh Allen to put him out of the game. I don't know. I've been asked a lot about this today. I've done a few radio and TV hits and it's definitely vicious and it's it's worth being flagged it. Upon replay, it does look like Josh is a bit elevated, so it's he hasn't completely surrendered himself. And Jonathan Jones, I'm sure he's thinking, I've got to get this guy down, but in terms of an injection, to me, it didn't have that severity to it in the moment, and obviously it's it's it's really scary to see the way that Josh hits the hits the turf, and watching the replays too, actually, behind the unaffiliated neurotrauma consultantcy it looked like, really where the concerning aspect was that his head bounces off the turf and we know what that can do as well. So it's definitely a play that that the NFL is trying to get rid of and I can completely understand why, but I didn't. I didn't get a sense of real maliciousness in the in the eyes of Jonathan Jones. Um, let me just say this, even if you want to get rid of it, then throw the guy out of the game. You want to make a point about hit hits, then make your point, you know what I mean. I think that I think people are sort of cutting the two fine here with that hit. Well, but I think it's the officials in the moment. And look, I feel like we're spending so much time talking about officiating. It's it's the speed of game aspect is going to be part of it. And um, I guess yes, but the luxury of replay that they could have made that play or that decision um on the field, and and and maybe this will continue to make that more of a commonality. But I still think that everybody's adjusting the idea that you can just boot a guy um for a hit, even though we saw it happen with Montez yesterday and that's leed do even more. Yeah, he's vantz Berfeck been suspended for the remainder of the season, and I kind of agree with that given his history. That was a that was a bad hit that he took on the tight end from the Indianapolis Colts as well. I want to let's move around a little bit around the national football he let's talk a little bit about the Browns offense. They came to life. They've been struggling, and there's there's been a little bit of a roller coaster early on for Baker Mayfield and Freddie Kitchens and those guys over there. They got a lot of weapons, but they finally got out of their rut coming out and scoring forty points against the Ravens. Yeah. I'm actually just making my way through that game right now. I have the Ravens in Pittsburgh that's coming Sunday, And the irony of it is that for all the attention that's been placed for a good reason on Baker Mayfield and hissability and throw the ball Jarvis Landry O'Dell, the way they found success in this game and might be the formula moving forward is just given it to Nick Chubb and becoming more of a run run first team and allow that to open up the passing game via playof action. Because the first few games that disjointed play calling and offense I think has been a product of trying to satisfy whether it be Jarvis, Odell Baker make these big plays. You have these players, so I'm sure when you're drawing it up on the whiteboard, you think, well, we got to attack, attack, attack, and maybe the more prudent approach for the Browns will be, Okay, let's plot and plot and plot and then boom hit him here. Because Odell was a pretty much non factor in this Ravens game. Jarvis was great at what Jarvis does, which is really an extension of the run game when you think about short quick screen passes, screens over the past, catches over the middle of catching run plays, and then he goes down with concussion. But I think this is more to what Freddy Kitchens may be looking at in terms of an offensive system moving forward. I have a question for you about tonight's game. If having the Steelers own three, which is certainly uncustomary territory for them, they're better than that, right, But just how good they are I think is still in question. I mean, I I don't know if we can say that if you've got Mason Rudolph under center and an offense that's still trying to find an identity with the loss of Antonio Brown and Juju Smith Schuster's thrust into a different role and the tight end position and not as consistent as they would like it. And James Connor trying to match what he did last year but now having a lot more of the responsibility thrown on his shoulders. I mean, I think defensively, the idea and the thought was that they were going to be better. The Devin Bush draft picks seem to be a no brainer. But as we've said, and we'll say and continue to say, when you don't have trust in your quarterback or can't count on consistency in that position, then everything else can be kind of rendered meaningless. Hey, Ivan, thanks for this. Good to see you here yesterday. We hope we see you down the road. Thanks for being on the show with us today. We appreciate it. Yeah, it was a blast yesterday and always to catch up with the guys. Thanks thanks having having watched for an NFL on CBS sidelade reporter. He was on the sidelines here Yesterday's been with CBS since twenty fourteen. He had a sideline view of the Bills lost to the New England Patriots yesterday. We're our cameras in the locker room yesterday after the loss of the Patriots, Time down for Around the Locker Room, brought to you by Connect Life Blood and organ Donor Network. Cole Beasley on the frustration with another loss to the Patriots. You know, anytime you have that many mistakes in a game, UM, you fill that way. But UM, you know, I love the team we have. I love the guys in this room. Um. You know, even even though we played so poorly on offense. Um, there's kind of a game where you realize the type of guys you have that keep fighting through that stuff and keep working and um, you know, I'll go to war with this team any day. Head coach Sean McDermott on the loss to New England. Well, we had opportunities, you know, we had opportunities that though our defense played outstanding. Um, you know, they block a punt, they turn them all over. UM, chance to win the game multiple times there and UM, so we've got to learn from this and um and continue to grow as a football team. Wide. Receivers A Jones found the bills cost for the mistakes offensively against New England. Whether it's the Patriots or anybody else, we want to win that game hurts for the guys that you know, they've worked their tails off to be in this position. But it is just one game, So I mean and go back watch it, make the mistakes and they move on. They can't they can't harp on it too much. Pat de Marco on the first quarter punk block that went for a New England touchdown. Yeah, they had, they had nine guys in the box, fan the guys to block, so we try to go big and and everybody take two and it was at a short edge. Guys over get there, so it's unfortune. Hopefully we got to clean up and we want the next week. Sean McDermot on the hit that put Josh Allen out of the game. There's no there's no room in football for that. Um, it's a shame to see a player like Josh or any player for that matter, go down with a hit like that. Micah Hyde Jonathan Jones hit that knocked Josh Shammin out of action. So that's the first thing that came out of the mouth from the sideline. If one of us did that to twelve, we wouldn't have been in the game anymore. There's no way. There's no way we would have continue to play in that game. Um, even with the holding penalty that we had offset penal. No, there's no way, you know, and and stuff like that. You know, we gotta obviously that's our quarterback. Were rather die with him to see that happen. You know, he you know, Josh didn't slide. But then the day you can't. It doesn't matter if it's a running back, you can't head a head, um. And so that's why I want the confirmation from you that it was it was head to head because I didn't I didn't get a good look at it. But like I said, if that was, if that was our quarterback, there's no way that that would have could you that you could continue playing running back? Frank Gore, I'm reaching the fifteen thousand career rushing yards Mark, bless you, bless Oh. We're loving the game, and you know I want to say thanks to all the guys and helped them get it. No, I'm all as the seasons coaches, you know. Now, you know, I just want to keep time at all and you know, might I say tomorrow, No, we need to catch a team fill kennepunder standing Stall Wames Dad Lames Day. We style bat pratice, the world was no privates and trying to getting one. In all that Sunday there you go around the locker room, brought here by Connect, Life Blood and Oregon Donor Network. Big Game for Frank or seventeen carries one hundred and nine yards six point four yards per carry and fifteen thousand. Only four guys have gone for fifteen thousand or more. Emmett Smith, Walter Payton, Barry Sanders. That's outstanding company. And now Frank Core that's really good company to be in. I mean, it's almost fame territory. For it's almost like one of those things where all those guys go by their first name, Emmett, Barry, By, Walter. Yeah. And now, Frank, do you remember the conversation we had a year ago when the Bills played the Dolphins, And I was thinking about it today watching the replay the game, and the conversation was Frank Gore Hall of Famer, and you know, he had obviously a fewer yards, not a whole lot of fewer last year. And I was debating that, say, I don't know, and now I haven't seen him in action, and yes, he's thirty six. That shouldn't matter in the Hall of Fame consideration. But he's done this for so long and done it at such a high level for so long, and now the numbers are there. If you're the fourth highest rushing running back in NFL history, of course you're a Hall of Famer, right he is? I agree. Yeah, here's the I read an article on this. This isn't This isn't an original thought, but I'll put it out there because somebody has this mindset that they call him an aggregator because he played so long. Of course he's going to have so many yards. That was one of the things that worked against Charlie Joyner. He played for seventeen years at wide receiver. Of course he's gonna have a lot of catches. Of course you're gonna have a Well, let me tell you something. The one thing in an NFL locker room that Garners more respect than anything is longevity. It The players and the guys who played this game and coaches who coached it understand how difficult it is to play for a long time in a league that churns people up and choose them up and spits them out on a regular basis. To live through that and to beat the odds mostly by hard work and commitment and all the things that go into staying healthy and staying available on the field and effective. It's the bottom line that is a Hall of Fame characteristic. Yeah, and I think Frank has obviously, at thirty six years old, it's exhibited something that I don't think any other running back in history the League's exhibited that he has an inspiration of value to this team too. Don't you think his teammates look at him and say, Wow, that's Frank Gore. Look at him, right? I think he does. I don't want to talk out of Turner. I think that's why he's here and Lashan McCoy's not. Yeah, oh yeah, I think Lashan McCoy can still play. But I think they found out that Devin Singletary can play, and they found out that Frank Gore really gives him something. And if there's going to be an odd man out, they want those two. Yeah, you know. And all that being said, and I'd love Gore's game yesterday. Really be nice to get Devin's Singletary back soon. Don't you agree? He is an explosive dimension that this that is he is a difference maker even at this year. I don't know, we haven't seen him that much, right, We've seen him in two games parts of two games. But yeah, you need, you need to go with him, and this offense needs a little shot in the arm, needs a little something else, you know, you yeah, you need, you need a little shot in the arm. And I think Devin Singletary is part of what can help you. We had some callers in here that think Dawson Knox needs a few opportunities. I would kind of chime in with that as well. And we've also, you know, the obligatory criticism that Zay Jones hasn't done enough. So you know, he got all this stuff that you'd kind of like to tweak with his offense and getting those guys in there at getting Singletary in there and giving Dawson Knox a few more targets is a couple of them. Hey, what do you think your biggest takeaway from the Bill's loss? Let us know what you think. We'll go to the phone. Here's Steven Amherst. Are you still there, Steve, yes, sir, Hi, thanks for waiting. Last year, we all observed one thing we know, Josh got cancust In the preseason. He got concusted in this season. So after the third game, I had a really bad feeling. My feeling was that New England would play this quarterback different, meaning that they had a strategy. They met as a team and the coach said, hit him, hit him as hard as you can. If it's borderline, keep going hit him. It's not a penalty till the ref sorted out. I saw something earlier in the game. I thought there was a penalty. Josh dropped back and the defensive player put his hand on the mask of the quarterback. So I thought we'd get him masking. We didn't get that. I thought we'd get a hands to the face. We didn't get that. Then I had more of a worse feeling because I says, Okay, now I see something going on. There's a pattern here. Maybe they're just gonna let the New England players target the quarterback. Yeah, Steve, I gotta stop you because I think you're really off target. As a matter of fact. And look, do they want to hit Josh Allen? You bet? Do they want to hit him hard? Yes? They do. Do they want to rattle his timing and force him into bad throws? Absolutely? Do they want to hurt him and make him suffer a concussion. No, even the Evil Empire in New England, I don't think plays like that, Steve. That's just mean. How many guys on Bill's defense think are gonna would love to take a shot at Tom Brady over the course of his twenty year career. Everybody, everybody would love to have a shot on him, like Nate Clemens put on him back in oh eight three or whatever that was and knock his helmet fifteen yards away. I mean, Tom Brady's got the biggest possible target on himself that you can possibly have as a player in the NFL. Everybody knows the key to their success as far as players go is starts with him. The simple fact of the matter is he didn't let it happen. He slides, he shuffles, he throws the football away. Even to the tune of going eighteen for thirty nine yesterday, he was sub fifty percent completions. He threw it into the dirt, he took intentional groundings, he threw it into the stands, he threw it off the sidelines. He just doesn't let that happen. So whatever conspiracy there is that you have, which I don't believe that the Patriots had for Josh Allen. It's very easy to remedy. Just throw the football away and don't be running around back there. Don't throw it off your back foot going backwards. Don't do that stuff. Please don't tell me that you're finding fault with Josh for taking that hit. Are you really are your faulting Josh Allen for that illegal helmet hit that should have been an ejection and will certainly be a fine. Why would he why why would he take it and Tom Brady not take it because he's more athletic and him make bigger plays with his feet and you get a bigger risk. So he deserved the hit. Well, it was a penalty, So there's that. You don't find fault with the victim here, and Josh Allen was a victim of an illegal hit. He could keep it from happening by sliding, yeah, or not playing the game. Well there's that too. Yeah. I just I can't. I can't let you say that it's not Josh's fault that he took a hit to the head. It's not his fault. Yeah, you're saying it is force. It is, Yeah, of course it is. Yah, yeah, elaborate, Okay, what's gonna happen if he runs down there like you think, like there's guys waiting on the bench to get a shot like that on him, And there's guys like that in Buffalo who would take a shot like that at Tom Brady? Does Josh need to be judicious about one to run? That's what I'm saying. Yeah, No, you're saying it's his fault that he took a hit to the head. Why is he going head first? He's trying to get yardage. He's playing the game. There's three yards, I mean nothing, trying to come back and win a game. I can't believe you're finding fault with Josh Allen for an illegal hit to the helmet. He's not thinking he's gonna get penalot. I could take a penalty shot, but he knows he's gonna get whacked six inches lower ten. If the guy comes what if he does that guy falls on his knee, cracks his knee. That happens accidental, and then it's like, oh shoot, yeah, no, it's not a hit to the head, which you supposed to be out. I have a hard time if the guy hits him low. Yeah, there's his ACL Yes, you're okay, not a hit to the head, and he could avoid all of it by sliding or getting three yards. I'm done. I retire. Yeah, you can do that too. There's a Bill in Buffalo. Hello Bill, always an option. Hello Bill. I'm sure you're not gonna like my take, and I hope you give me the courtesy of at least talking my way through this for as long as it doesn't take ten minutes or two minutes. But my biggest take away from this game is it doesn't matter how good or how bad Josh Allen played or how horrible our punter is, because he's horrible. Nobody really mentioned that today, um or nothing matters. The only don't think that really matters is that the reps. My biggest takeaway is the officials in the NFL can and do get directly involved in the outcome of games. And let me speak my piece before you tell me what an idiot I am and how crazy. Okay, I can hold off on. Okay, hurry up, because we're going to non teasing. Good go ahead, Bill, we'll pass herry up. I'm starting with the overrule passing fiorance called obvious passing fiorance. How in the hell do the overrule that? What do you call it besides cheating? Now next one dead? Can I answer? I'm not cutting you off. I think upon further review, which I did this morning, I think they looked at it and said they discussed it and said that wasn't really catchable. We're gonna pick up the flag. That's what I think happened. I'm not sure contact was real, but the ball was out of play. Go ahead, but go ahead, get face mask. Then that call it didn't call. But then the next right they should have called the face mask in the pocket? I agree, go ahead, field goal? Hear me out, we would at the ball and field goal territory. That's three points there. We had about a ten yard line. Then then the other downs where he had the ball and Josh Allen got face masked when they sacked him and it was blatantly obvious, they didn't call it, and the end up being fourth down, and we've lost out at another at least three points there. That six points, that's what we lost by, By the way, we probably might have scored a touchdown too. Now, how about the challenge from mcdurritt. I mean, come on, Steve, you gotta be kidding me. That guy would way out of his weight of getting that guy's way, and he tripped our guy up. Even if he didn't trip him, he tripped him by making our guy move. Now the cheap shot on Allen, the guy didn't get thrown out of the game, which was ridiculous. Um, yeah, Bill, you're two minutes are up. Don't listen. There was an extra point in there which every single game that is of the nature we just saw yesterday between the Bills and the Patriots, it could be the Steelers and the Ravens, it could be this, it could be the whatever two games where you get into a three point game that it's sub sub twenty points, where it's a defensive struggle. It's going to be like that. You can go through every single NFL game throughout the hundred year history of the sport and do exactly what you did, Bill, and go down every call for or against you and say that was the difference, that was the difference, that was the difference that was and you'd all be right, and you'd be right, But that doesn't change the nature of the fact that that's just the nature of the game you play. And if you think they're doing it on purpose, if you think they're cheating, if you think the referees have it in form, if you think some teams get favorable they may get better breaks than other people, is because they plan on doing it and they practice doing it, or they have a mindset to do it. Whatever. That's that's football. So I get it. That is frustrating to see the refs make these calls or not make these calls, and all you see is the ones that go against your team. I get it, But listen, that's what happens when you play in tight football games. One play one way or the other makes all the difference in the world, whether it happens in the first quarter or the last minute of the game. It's just the simple fact of the matter. So I know it's frustrating. We all feel it at times, but you got to you gotta stand up above it and say, listen, we've got a really good football team. They had a chance to win that. It was a huge missed opportunity yesterday, and certainly there's a lot of reasons for it. But for me being a former guy, and I think I can speak for a lot of former players, and maybe some current ones put it on their shoulders. Of the players, they're the ones who needed to play better at certain times. They're the ones who missed to play. They're the ones who missed to pass. They're the ones who didn't read the defense right. They're the ones who missed a cut. They're the ones who missed to block. They're the ones who missed to tackle. The players are the ones who won or lost the game. Now, the officials affected it from moment to moment once in a while, and in a game like this, yeah, maybe big here than there, But it's all about the guys on the field. And I know people don't want to hear that on a day like today, when it's so frustrating to sit here and lose another one to the Patriots. But you gotta know, just rise up, say listen, we've got we're a much better football team. We've got much better games ahead of us, and we're gonna play that way from here and forward. We gotta break. We're coming back with more John Murphy and Steve Tasker. It is One Bill's Live, presented by Kalida Health Life from the Seneca Studio, Seneca Resorts in Casino. Nothing comes close. Welcome back One Bill's Live, John Murphy and Steve Tasker from our One Buffalo Studio getting a lot of feedback. And we knew we would right. We knew this game was was packed with information and entertainment. A lot of meat on this bone, I I said that before, a lot of brought with emotion, a lot of apples on this tree. Yeah, a lot of pizza in the box on this in this one because of the how close it was. And like I said, I've character My biggest takeaway was I characterize the game as a missed opportunity. You had those guys on the ropes, and you know you let them off. Yeah, they got away. We're asking folks your biggest takeaway will take more phone calls, but we want to get to the tweet sheet. It is brought to you by Corrigan Moving Systems, the official movers of the Buffalo Bills. Biggest takeaway from the Bills loss of the Patriots, Steve get us going here all right? From Nikki, She says, my biggest takeaway is that we are officially a playoff contender. We went just went head to toe with our toe to toe with possibly the best team in the NFL. That said, Alan needs to make better decisions. He's improved almost everywhere else, but his turnovers and other mistakes have been hurting us. From Nikki and also we've got one from Andrews says that the defense can dominate the Pats. Alan's downfall was that instead of looking for the short passes and moving the ball down the field, he was trying to force the plays that weren't there. Also, he needs to learn if a play is not there, throw it away, don't lose yards. He cost us that field goal with a sack that you know. We've echoed that throughout the game as well, and that's that's been the theme. A tweet from Jr. Who says his biggest takeaway or hers our team is really good. We needed to get a few calls to go our way and that game is a Bill's victory interception while Alza was out of bounds, touching them all on the face mask. No call, great game, sad loss. Hope Josh gets healthy quickly, okay, And one more from Team Many twenty two. I believe we passed in certain situations only because Gore needed a break. One of those I remember was an interception. A second back could have come in to keep gashing them in the run game. People have said that I had to People have said they need to give the ball to Frank Gore Moore, and a lot of it is I don't know how to describe a Steve like postgame analysis and you look at the statue and you say, we look at that Frank Gore only got seventeen carries. They needed to run him more, and that kind of criticism critique I find invalid oftentimes. But I did look back how many carries it again in what situation? And I do think there's something to be said for they know what his workload should be, they know what they want to do on offense. You can't necessarily say because he had seventeen carryings in one hundred nine yards, I'm talking about Frank Gore here, that he was going to continue with that and continue to get six and a half yards per carry. Right. But I'll tell you what, how pleasant a surprise is Frank Gore? Yeah, thirty six. I'm like, we went over fifteen thousand yards for his career. Yesterday at home against the Patriots in a game where he gave the Bills a chance to win. Uh, just a fantastic effort. It's it's great to see him. He's a real addition to this club. I think he loves the vibe in the locker room. He's here because of the kind of player he is, also for the for the kind of person he is as much as for the player he is. And Uh, you gotta he's gotta be Yeah, he gotta be thrilled for the guy as old as he is, for the position he plays, and to be coming out and doing the things that he just did for the team yesterday and to go into the elite company that he did in the all time rushing list. Just fantastic addition to the team. And I think I think all of us, I gotta admit, I'm really surprised at how I don't know what relieved I am that he's on the team. That's kind of a strong statement from where we were about three or four or five months ago. Sure right, good point. Let's go to a couple of phone calls here. Let's go to Sean and Buffalo. Good afternoon, Sean, welcome to the show. Thank you. I'm just wanting have European. Do you think Josh Allen will play this Sunday or you think Berkeley will. If Josh Allen is healthy, I think he'll play. What's the status? Do you know anything? He's in the concussion protocol? And that is a big sixty four dollars question, Sean. Nobody's gonna know that. We'll probably get an inkling of it on Wednesday when they come out for practice, and we'll watch the level of activity he does. But I'll tell you this, if he comes out on Wednesday and he's standing around in street clothes or you know, in shorts and a T shirt, yeah, it doesn't look good for him playing on Sunday. Jehan mcdermo talks to the media at four pm today. I'm sure that question comes up update on Josh Allen, and I'm almost as certain that there won't be much in the concussion concussion protocol. Next question, let's what they have to do. Now, let's go to Tom on the West Side. Hello Tom, you're on the air, afternoon, gentlemen. Kudos the Frank And why is everybody always pick it on Frank because even on the commercials they say who invited Frank? But anyway, I'm not gonna get into the roughing, even though I totally agree that it was bad and agree just but I wanted to say I believe in Berkeley and he got he got drawn in late in the game, and he never practiced what the ones all week? But who are we going to pick up on the waiver wire or free agency to back up Josh? Now, I'll hang up and listen early think Tom on the practice squad. They had Davis Webb who played a little bit with the Giants. I think he was on the Jets roster or maybe practice squad a year or so ago. And again he would be the likely candidate, I would think. But again a question for John McDermot at four o'clock today. Yeah, they'll probably make a move. They're probably have to. But if Josh isn't ready, I'm with you. I mean, we've seen Matt Barkley win games for this team. Ye did it last year after being in town twelve days, and think out far much further along he is. He looked, He looked confident yesterday. Although the Patriots obviously changed their game plan the moment he came in to whatever the Bills protection plan was, the Patriots plan was to bring one more guy than they could protect against and force him to throw the football right now. He beat him on a fade route right on the first play, came in off the bench, and then they started bringing pressure and then it was an uphill battle. So that's what the Patriots did off the cuff yesterday of seeing Barkley. But I think for Bills fans, I think one of the good things about this wad coming into the year was he felt like he had some good depth at every position and his quarterbacks no different sake. One more call here, Dan and Hamburg. Hello, Dan, welcome to the show. Hi, thanks for taking my call. If memory serves me, and I've been watching football for a long long time, if there was a personal foul and another offsetting penalty such as the holding yesterday or an offside, it's illegal formation that they would pick up the foul and just enforced the personal foul. And if it was a rule, or even if it wasn't, is that something that if it was put into the NFL officials pocket with that you think eliminates some of the head hunting that's going on. I don't know. Can I just say this before we get deep into this. I don't think there's head hunting going on. I think that was an outlier yesterday, which is why it was shocking, because that doesn't happen early anymore there, right, guys don't play like that. Yeah. That what had amounted to yesterday was the guy saw Josh Allen. And I don't want to undersell it either. The guy saw Josh common he had both feet planned it. He was he thought maybe there's a chance he was. You could see as he's coming up, he's kind of going side to side and making sure Josh isn't gonna cut away from him. And then as Josh decides to go down, his teammate jumps on Josh and starts to pull him down, but not too far, and he just turns into the hit and hits helmet to helmet. It was a really solid hit. Head hunting. Yeah, I don't think there's too much of that going around anymore. That's pretty much been weaned out of the league. But because of the fact that they don't care if it's called or not. They watch the film and the team who was a victim of it tells the league says, hey, what do you think about this? And the league says, yeah, you're right, and they'll find the guy even if there was no penalty on the field. So they've gotten rid of that as much as they can. They suspended a guy for the rest of the season today because he was headhunting. Vontes Burfick won't see the field in twenty nineteen again, So yeah, they've done away with all of that stuff. And as bad as that hit was for the Bills yesterday, you know, I don't that's not head hunting to me. It was an egregious hint and it was a penalty and the guy's gonna get fined for it. But I think in under this circumstance, I gotta say if they find him, so I guess I'm I'm I gotta be good with it. You know. I don't like the hit that it happened to my guy, but the league through the flag and they're gonna find the guy, so, you know, and you know, everybody says I should have thrown him out right away. I don't know. I don't know. I'm not there. I see your I see the point, but I'm not. I'm not to the point where that hit on Josh Allen yesterday is ejectable, but it certainly was a It certainly was a penalty. Can we make a deal the rest of the week. We can talk about that again, but let's not dwell on that. You know what I mean? That hit? That penalty? Uh deal? Yeah, the caller brought a day, Dan, I know, I just it was one play in a really good game. And really it was a great game. I was saying, I was staying aroun talk to people after the game, even at Jim's tailgate some other places. It's a great game. Yeah, it's a great It's hard to say that when you lose so disappointedly Yea, but man, oh man, what has two good football teams? I gotta say. Yep, we're taking a break. We're coming back, Steve to Tasker John Murphy. One Bills Live presented by Kalidah Health Live from the Seneca Studio. This is Buffalo Bills Radio. Okay, what do we learn? I know it? What do we learn from today's show? It is brought to you by Skyworks. There. It is the official construction rental company of the Buffalo Bills. For all of your construction rental needs, check out Skyworks. They bring us. What have we learned and they bring us this final segment of the show. Well, what do we learned from today's show? It's good show today. We know that and I can't find them. What will we learned? Oh? Eric Wood joined us first hour of the show. Eric Wood talked about the block put that resolved it in in New England touchdown. You know, listening to what the Patriots said after the game, it was something that identified on film. I said that during the broadcast yesterday. I guarantee the Patriots saw something on film from this punt unit. And as I watched the three pack replay back, there is also the perfect storm a touch low of a snap, not a bad snap, but a touch low. And when you're talking about fractions of a second making a huge difference and snap the punt time. You know, maybe that punt gets blocked either way, but it's a pretty close, you know, pretty close deal. And when he has to bend down and get it up, that does not allow him to pull that quick trigger on the punt. There you go, that's what we learned from today's show. See good show. We look forward to doing again tomorrow. Much more to talk about, right, we know that's a lot of layers on this onion. I told you. Your biggest takeaway from yesterday's game against the Patriots. Let us know what you think. It is. One Bill's Live presented by Klada Hell from the Seneca Studios. This is Buffalo Bills Radio. Bengals Pro Bowl wide out aj Green will not play tonight against the theaters and could be out for a while as he from preseason ankle surgery. He's wearing a protective boot. He has been running and working out, but not expect you to be ready for a while out tonight when the Bengals play at Pittsburgh, a couple of winless teams owing three. Cincinnati owen three. Pittsburgh and the Steelers lead the all time series with sixty two wins to Cincinnati's thirty five, and Pittsburgh has won the past seven Tonight kick off at eight fifteen tonight at Hinesfield the Bengals and the Steelers. Bear's quarterback Mitchell Trubisky suffered a left shoulder injury yesterday in the win over Minnesota. Coach Mattneggie says he does not think Trubisky's injury was a season ender, but he did not have much more information than that. And the Buffalo Sabers have wrapped up their training camp that was yesterday morning a practice at Key Bank Center. They returned to practice tomorrow getting set for the season opener Thursday night seven o'clock and then the home opener scheduled for Saturday against New Jersey. Welcome Back Hour number two John Murphy and Steve Tasker. It is one Bills Live from the as Seneca Studio in Orchard Park and a special guest this hour. You're gonna stay with Owen, You're gonna stay with us. Let's get this out of the way. Visit Hunt real Estate dot com to a score on all of your real estate needs. We're back for a few more minutes here. Evan Washburn was on the sidelines yesterday for the CBS broadcast. We're coming here from the Seneca Studio in Archerd Park and this is Buffalo Bills Radios Radio Network stories game that day comes from one Bill Drive to Bills are here today, workday. I told you.
