WEBVTT
00:00:03.279 --> 00:00:06.639
Welcome back everyone to another episode of On the Path.
00:00:07.360 --> 00:00:11.839
We're here again with another guest who Jackson is going to introduce for us this week.
00:00:12.240 --> 00:00:13.839
Yep, this is Devon Hill.
00:00:14.320 --> 00:00:16.000
He's from Orham, Utah.
00:00:16.160 --> 00:00:21.280
He is a teammate of mine on the Southern Virginia football team, plays cornerback.
00:00:21.519 --> 00:00:24.719
And yeah, Devon, tell us a little bit more about yourself, Dave.
00:00:25.199 --> 00:00:25.679
Yeah.
00:00:26.320 --> 00:00:30.399
Well, I'm from Orham, Utah, which is actually where you're from as well.
00:00:30.640 --> 00:00:31.280
This is true.
00:00:31.519 --> 00:00:35.119
So but I've grew up there throughout my life.
00:00:36.000 --> 00:00:48.240
I have two older brothers, one younger brother, and and I also served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Texas Dallas East mission.
00:00:49.679 --> 00:00:54.719
And just like you said, I've played football at Orm High School.
00:00:55.200 --> 00:01:01.600
And now I'm here playing Southern Virginia, and it's been it's been fun.
00:01:01.920 --> 00:01:02.960
Heck yeah, you are, dude.
00:01:03.200 --> 00:01:03.520
Thank you.
00:01:03.759 --> 00:01:04.239
Heck yeah.
00:01:04.560 --> 00:01:05.280
Exciting, man.
00:01:05.359 --> 00:01:06.000
Happy to have you.
00:01:06.159 --> 00:01:07.040
Yeah, that's awesome.
00:01:07.519 --> 00:01:08.640
I'm gonna take a second.
00:01:08.799 --> 00:01:12.000
Um thanks to Alan for coming and joining us today, first of all.
00:01:12.159 --> 00:01:13.280
Uh we're happy to have him.
00:01:13.359 --> 00:01:14.560
Uh he's a really awesome guy.
00:01:14.640 --> 00:01:16.239
I've heard really good things about him.
00:01:16.400 --> 00:01:22.879
Um, but I'm gonna take a second to introduce our theme for this week that we're gonna be discussing with Alan.
00:01:23.120 --> 00:01:33.120
And so last week in my institute class, we were talking about miracles and the miracles that Jesus Christ has performed throughout his life, and he performed many, as we all know.
00:01:33.280 --> 00:01:38.000
Um but one stuck out specifically to me, and it's the miracle of him walking on water.
00:01:38.159 --> 00:01:44.239
And it's not only the fact that Jesus is walking on water, like obviously that's insane, that's amazing.
00:01:44.480 --> 00:01:49.599
Um, but it's the faith that Peter had to step out onto the water as well.
00:01:50.000 --> 00:01:54.000
But there's also that moment when Peter started to doubt and he fell into the water.
00:01:54.159 --> 00:01:58.239
So we're gonna we're gonna read those scriptures and then we're gonna talk about them together today.
00:01:58.400 --> 00:01:59.359
So I'll read them.
00:01:59.840 --> 00:02:03.280
Um and we'll be reading in Matthew chapter 14.
00:02:03.519 --> 00:02:06.560
I'm gonna read verses 25 to 31.
00:02:06.959 --> 00:02:13.039
Um And it says, And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea.
00:02:13.199 --> 00:02:19.759
And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit, and they cried out for fear.
00:02:20.000 --> 00:02:26.400
But straight straight away Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer, it is I, be not afraid.
00:02:26.639 --> 00:02:32.800
And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water.
00:02:33.039 --> 00:02:34.319
And he said, Come.
00:02:34.560 --> 00:02:39.919
And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water to go to Jesus.
00:02:40.159 --> 00:02:47.680
But when he saw the wind boistro boisterous, he was afraid, and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me.
00:02:47.840 --> 00:02:57.199
And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand and caught him, and said unto him, Oh, O thou of little faith, where didst thou doubt?
00:02:58.000 --> 00:03:02.800
So, in these in these verses there's lots of lessons to be learned.
00:03:02.960 --> 00:03:15.840
Um I'd like for us to kind of uh stick on verse uh 27, kind of before Peter, uh just where it says, Be of good cheer, it is I be not afraid.
00:03:16.159 --> 00:03:28.400
And so one of my favorite things um or one of my favorite phrases in the book or in the book of Mormon, the Bible, and whatever scripture it is, is either fear not or be not afraid.
00:03:28.639 --> 00:03:41.360
Um, in your life in in sports, whatever it may be, when have you had a moment where you took that and like used it and applied it into your life was be not afraid, fear not?
00:03:42.000 --> 00:03:49.680
Yeah, um, I mean honestly, I I saw it a lot in in sports.
00:03:49.919 --> 00:03:59.280
Um obviously playing playing corner is probably the hardest position, in my opinion, either corner or quarterback.
00:03:59.520 --> 00:04:08.719
But you can be able to do your job throughout the whole the whole game, and you make one mistake and it could lose lose the game.
00:04:09.120 --> 00:04:32.560
Um But I think one thing that has helped me to be able to not be afraid in times of hardship or where our circumstances are um very very difficult is being very prepared in the temporal and spiritual things.
00:04:32.800 --> 00:04:53.680
So in football, I it's very important that we be prepared of who we are facing and to be able to see the scattering reports and watch a lot of film and so that when there is a situation where it's down to the line of whoever is gonna, you know, win, um the last minutes, then you know, you're you are prepared.
00:04:53.759 --> 00:04:54.720
You won't be afraid, right?
00:04:54.800 --> 00:04:58.720
And that's just in the in the gospel, right?
00:04:59.680 --> 00:05:01.839
Um especially on my mission.
00:05:02.160 --> 00:05:17.279
Um there were times where especially I served in Texas and there was lots of Bible bashers, and you feel like you you feel like you feel like you need to be very prepared of to be able to bash them, or feel like you need to prepare to be able to know what to say.
00:05:17.680 --> 00:05:32.079
I remember my very first lesson I had on my mission, um, and you know, I felt like I was I was prepared, but and then my before the lesson, my trainer's like, okay, you're gonna teach about faith and repentance.
00:05:32.240 --> 00:05:35.759
And when he said that, I'm like, wait, what's what's faith and repentance again?
00:05:35.839 --> 00:05:39.839
Like I I was going through, like, preach my gospel, I was like, okay, like what is it again?
00:05:40.079 --> 00:05:44.959
And we go into the meeting, and I'm like, uh, I don't know what to say.
00:05:45.360 --> 00:06:01.839
But then when it was my turn to like speak, one thing that I was prepared was was being able to rely on my savior and to especially rely on the Holy Ghost as my constant companionship and to be my mouthpiece.
00:06:02.240 --> 00:06:27.839
And I remember when when I just started to speak, like I knew that it was it was right, and the person that we were teaching hit it he he understood what faith and repentance was, and and that was like I think that was the the huge turning point of my mission was being able to trust in in the savior in in times of difficulties.
00:06:28.319 --> 00:06:41.519
Um whether that be on the mission or through sports or through school, like it's it's very important to make sure that we are always having the spirit with us.
00:06:41.759 --> 00:06:48.800
Even if we feel like we are not prepared or not, as long as we have the spirit, we can be able to know that we can find those miracles.
00:06:50.879 --> 00:06:52.079
Yeah, I love that.
00:06:52.240 --> 00:07:11.920
Uh it reminds me of uh it's funny you bring her preach my gospel because you know, even two years after I've returned home from my mission, I find you know, I find myself in you know life's path and the lessons I've learned just from preaching my gospel alone, right?
00:07:12.000 --> 00:07:28.720
But anyways, to the point, um President Nelson talks about like um Captain Moroni and you know like how the Lamanites were gonna come like destroy all different parts of the land of of Nephi or whatever it is that they lived at at the time.
00:07:29.279 --> 00:07:43.120
And instead of just you know um just relying on prayer and and things like that, it says that Moroni like prepared the people and like built walls and all these other things, right?
00:07:43.199 --> 00:07:51.360
And President Nelson talks about how that needs to be like our like mantra in these last days, right?
00:07:51.519 --> 00:07:56.639
Not like be like super fearful and like but be prepared, right?
00:07:56.800 --> 00:08:04.560
It's like it's like the story or the parable of like the the virgins and like the the lamps and the oil, right?
00:08:04.639 --> 00:08:07.839
It's like you gotta have oil in your lamp, right?
00:08:08.079 --> 00:08:18.879
You don't wanna be the individuals that are uh kicked out or not let into the the wedding because of you know you didn't have oil in your lamp, right?
00:08:19.279 --> 00:08:30.639
And you know that comes from you know it's the primary answers, but you know, it's easy on our missions, yeah, right, to just to like sit there and be like, yeah, I can never lose these habits.
00:08:30.800 --> 00:08:32.480
Bro, it's been two years now.
00:08:33.200 --> 00:08:36.559
It's it's crazy how how hard it is sometimes.
00:08:36.799 --> 00:08:38.080
Oh, for sure, dude.
00:08:38.240 --> 00:08:44.000
Like, like every time I hear like be prepared, I'm like, I wish I had that name tag on, bro.
00:08:45.279 --> 00:08:47.039
God's talking, dude.
00:08:47.120 --> 00:08:52.399
I remember giving a talk just like a few months ago, and I'm like, man, this is not the same.
00:08:52.720 --> 00:08:53.679
This is not the same.
00:08:53.759 --> 00:08:56.000
I'm like, oh, I actually have to try now.
00:08:58.559 --> 00:09:12.720
The spirit's not clicking, but I just one thing that that stuck out to me was like sometimes we we need to make sure that we do our part because that's what the Lord asked us to do.
00:09:12.799 --> 00:09:22.320
Like He wants us to do as much as we can, and once we do that, we can be able to know that He'll provide us the way.
00:09:22.720 --> 00:09:23.360
You know?
00:09:25.039 --> 00:09:30.080
I actually had a funny experience this last Sunday um talking about being prepared.
00:09:30.320 --> 00:09:43.279
Uh so I'm in the bishopric in our YSA, and it's it's it's my it's my month to conduct, so you know, I have my speakers, I text them during the week, I was like, hey, here's your reminder, like you're speaking on Sunday.
00:09:43.440 --> 00:09:47.919
Um didn't speak, maybe maybe next month.
00:09:48.159 --> 00:09:56.639
Um but but I'm sitting there, church starts at 10:30, it's 1025, and none of my speakers have shown up.
00:09:56.799 --> 00:09:58.720
And I'm sitting there just freaking out.
00:09:58.799 --> 00:10:00.960
I'm like, I don't know what I'm gonna do.
00:10:01.120 --> 00:10:03.519
The first counselor instead present sitting next to me.
00:10:03.600 --> 00:10:08.320
He's like, hey, the high councilman, if you go talk to him, he'll give a talk.
00:10:08.720 --> 00:10:10.480
Like, I don't want to do that.
00:10:10.559 --> 00:10:11.919
So I like quickly text all of them.
00:10:12.000 --> 00:10:13.200
I'm like, are you guys coming?
00:10:13.360 --> 00:10:15.279
Like, I need some help, please.
00:10:15.679 --> 00:10:25.120
But like, it was probably one of those moments where it's like they knew they told me they were gonna come, like I need to calm down and just be not afraid, right?
00:10:25.279 --> 00:10:25.440
Right.
00:10:25.840 --> 00:10:35.360
And 1028, the first one walks in, a minute after the next one walks in, and then two minutes later, the last one he texts me, he says, I'm 20 seconds away, I'll be there.
00:10:35.600 --> 00:10:37.759
Like, alright, I'm starting the meeting.
00:10:38.000 --> 00:10:39.279
So they all showed up.
00:10:39.519 --> 00:10:48.879
Um, but again, later that meeting, they all finished up their talks, and we still had 15 minutes, and I was like, crap, now I have to get up.
00:10:49.279 --> 00:10:57.519
And I just got up and shared this little thought, like this thought that's been stuck in my mind, talking about how God loves us enough to hurt us, right?
00:10:57.919 --> 00:11:03.919
Um, so I just shared a little thought on that for five minutes, and it ended up being okay, right?
00:11:04.080 --> 00:11:05.279
I just was stressed.
00:11:05.360 --> 00:11:19.279
I was worried that nobody was gonna show up and I was gonna have to talk for 45 minutes, but but you know, it's one of those things it's like, you know, when you're prepared and you send the word out like other like God will help you, right?
00:11:19.679 --> 00:11:21.679
He'll bless you and he'll make sure everything's okay.
00:11:21.759 --> 00:11:26.639
So I might have been stressed for five minutes, but everything worked out and I was okay.
00:11:27.279 --> 00:11:30.240
Um but yeah, it's kinda it's hard.
00:11:31.279 --> 00:11:32.639
It's not always easy to be prepared.
00:11:32.720 --> 00:11:47.360
Like if you come from home from a mission and maybe you fall out of some habits, maybe you keep some, and it's just it's you you stress over it, but overall, as long as you're keeping something, you're staying consistent in something, the Lord will bless you in certain ways.
00:11:48.080 --> 00:11:58.480
Um but let's let's talk a little bit about Peter now and his his uh his falling into the water, right?
00:11:58.960 --> 00:12:02.080
So we saw that he was prepared, right?
00:12:02.399 --> 00:12:09.919
He had gone through so many things, he's watched, witnessed so many miracles, he knew that Jesus was the Christ, he was the Messiah, he was the chosen one.
00:12:10.879 --> 00:12:16.240
But there was still something that grabbed his attention and started to fall into the water.
00:12:16.879 --> 00:12:39.120
Um I mean we saw that Jesus immediately saved him and says that very specifically in the scriptures immediately that he saved him, but he he doubted for a second, and it's it's interesting to think that Peter, one of the closest ones to Jesus Christ in his earthly ministry, doubted walking on water, being there with the Lord.
00:12:39.200 --> 00:12:42.320
So it's like I don't know what what what do you guys think about that?
00:12:42.399 --> 00:12:45.679
What are your your thoughts on those scriptures, on those verses?
00:12:46.399 --> 00:12:54.639
Um I just really think it's it's very important to think celestial, right?
00:12:55.279 --> 00:13:02.960
Because Peter, when he was walking on water, he was thinking celestial, his his focus was towards on Jesus Christ.
00:13:03.120 --> 00:13:05.519
That's part of thinking celestial.
00:13:06.159 --> 00:13:24.320
But when we get caught up in in the worldly things, which we all do, especially me, either the praise of the world or you know, the materialistic things, it can draw us away from from our savior.
00:13:25.039 --> 00:13:33.840
And when times do get hard, it it can get very foggy on where our resources are at.
00:13:33.919 --> 00:13:36.799
That's that's the blessing of being able to be on the mission, right?
00:13:36.879 --> 00:13:53.120
Because when you come home, when we do feel like we have fallen back, we know where our sources, even though we feel like life is, you know, that cloud comes in whenever we focus on temporal things or or the the worldly things, right?
00:13:53.519 --> 00:14:01.440
But we can be able to always know that where our main source is of light, which is which is Jesus Christ.
00:14:02.000 --> 00:14:17.440
And for me, it's to be able to focus my on my Savior at all times, whenever I feel like I have fallen back, is ask myself if I've if I'm doing the little things, right?
00:14:17.919 --> 00:14:29.600
Because just like those um that scripture in the Book of Mormon, small things can by small and simple By small and simple things can great things be brought to pass.
00:14:30.480 --> 00:14:45.039
And I truly believe that and have seen it in my life, and and it's just you know, saying your morning prayers, nightly prayers, and deciding your scriptures like it just always makes a huge difference.
00:14:45.279 --> 00:15:03.440
Always makes a huge difference and helps us to know that whenever we are, you know, have fallen back or feel like we we are like Peter and fell through the water, we can be able to look up and call upon our Savior and he'll his arm of mercy is always extended towards us.
00:15:03.519 --> 00:15:04.960
That's the beautiful thing.
00:15:05.200 --> 00:15:11.600
Um that he's always inviting us to come onto him, always inviting us to change and to be better.
00:15:11.840 --> 00:15:23.360
Because he sees our full potential and and we need him to be able to help ourselves to know what our full potential is um spiritually and and yeah.
00:15:23.759 --> 00:15:24.000
Yeah.
00:15:25.120 --> 00:15:34.720
I love what you said, you quoted I think it's in 2 Ephi, uh, where he says like mine arm of mercy is extended towards towards you, right?
00:15:35.600 --> 00:15:47.440
You know, with Peter the past six months I've I've had many different uh learning experiences from the perspective of of Peter, right?
00:15:48.080 --> 00:16:04.240
And one of them, along with um, I don't want to call it a chastising experience, but a learning experience, right, from falling into the water um after he was walking, was uh when he denied the savior three times, right?
00:16:05.039 --> 00:16:11.279
Uh and then obviously fast forward to what was it, three years later, right?
00:16:11.519 --> 00:16:17.360
The saviors, um, at this point from the perspective of the apostles, he's dead and he's gone, right?
00:16:17.440 --> 00:16:22.240
Like we they have no idea where he's at, they don't know what's going on, and so what do they do?
00:16:22.399 --> 00:16:26.960
They return to their nets and they start fishing, um, as we all know.
00:16:27.200 --> 00:16:29.679
And fast forward, right?
00:16:29.759 --> 00:16:32.480
They see a figure off in the distance, right?
00:16:32.720 --> 00:16:38.720
And they're like, Who is this who's who's this guy telling us to just cast our net on the other side?
00:16:38.799 --> 00:16:40.000
You think we haven't thought of that?
00:16:40.240 --> 00:16:41.679
Like, what do you mean?
00:16:41.919 --> 00:16:43.039
And what do they do, right?
00:16:43.120 --> 00:16:48.720
They they give it a shot and they they do it, and it says like they they can't even fit it into the boat, right?
00:16:48.799 --> 00:16:53.279
Yeah, and then I think it's Peter that like recognizes that it's like the Lord.
00:16:53.360 --> 00:16:54.799
So they swim out, right?
00:16:55.679 --> 00:17:02.480
And you know, then they have that iconic, like I hate using the word iconic, that's not the right word.
00:17:02.799 --> 00:17:09.920
This unforgettable lesson, right, with the savior as they're eating the fish.
00:17:10.079 --> 00:17:19.039
You know, they're they're laughing, they're having a good time, and then the savior being, you know, the savior turns to Peter and he's like, lovest thou me more than these, right?
00:17:19.200 --> 00:17:24.240
And then Peter, as we know, is like, yay Lord, like thou knowest that I love thee.
00:17:24.400 --> 00:17:26.720
And then he repeats that three times, right?
00:17:27.599 --> 00:17:44.880
And what what I love about that whole lesson, right, relating it back to what you were saying, Ben, and what you were saying as well, Dallin, as far as fear, failure, and then redemption through the savior, right?
00:17:46.559 --> 00:17:58.079
When I think of my favorite attributes of the savior, my one of my favorite names is Redeemer and Advocate.
00:17:58.480 --> 00:17:59.599
Yeah, yeah.
00:17:59.839 --> 00:18:08.480
And specifically with the story, Redeemer, because like we often think, right, like it is on us.
00:18:08.799 --> 00:18:10.799
Our salvation is on us, right?
00:18:11.039 --> 00:18:13.279
In a sense, because of agency, for sure.
00:18:13.440 --> 00:18:16.400
Like we we we get to choose.
00:18:17.519 --> 00:18:23.519
But at the same time, like there's a reason why it says in the scriptures, like he's the author and finisher of our faith.
00:18:23.680 --> 00:18:38.720
Meaning, once we make those covenants, once, like Peter, we are bound to him, like, and we completely give our will to him, like our our destiny is in our hands at that point.
00:18:38.880 --> 00:18:51.039
And the point I'm trying to get at is it's taken me and will take me a lifetime, but I'm I'm starting to feel little nudges from the spirit to help me really understand what grace really means, right?
00:18:51.200 --> 00:18:59.839
It's it's not it's not what we think as okay, if I do everything I can, then the savior helps me out, right?
00:19:00.000 --> 00:19:07.440
It's it's no, once I've exercised faith in him, like then his arm of mercy is is extended towards us, right?
00:19:07.599 --> 00:19:09.599
And the same thing with Peter right here, right?
00:19:10.640 --> 00:19:14.720
The savior didn't necessarily punish him, right?
00:19:15.119 --> 00:19:20.799
Like the punishment was like you can imagine how guilty that dude felt.
00:19:20.880 --> 00:19:24.319
Like, yeah, you already felt the punishment, he already felt it, man.
00:19:24.480 --> 00:19:25.359
Yeah, he already felt it.
00:19:25.599 --> 00:19:27.680
The absence of the spirit, like for sure, right?
00:19:28.319 --> 00:19:34.160
And instead of the savior in that moment telling Peter, like, you're gonna deny me three times.
00:19:34.559 --> 00:19:43.279
Like, and like, you know, to us the savior could have been like, Yep, so therefore, like, why would I have you in my circle, right?
00:19:43.920 --> 00:19:47.839
Like, it didn't come as a surprise to him.
00:19:48.160 --> 00:19:52.000
Not and like, I think we need to understand that ourselves, right?
00:19:52.160 --> 00:19:56.880
Like, like, I guarantee you the savior knew that Peter was gonna fall in the water.
00:19:56.960 --> 00:19:59.359
Yeah, like, and it's not a surprise to him, right?
00:19:59.440 --> 00:20:04.880
And so when he asked him that question, oh ye a little faith, like it wasn't the savior saying, I'm surprised.
00:20:05.279 --> 00:20:07.119
Like it was it was for Peter.
00:20:07.279 --> 00:20:11.200
It was like it was like, don't you understand that I'm here?
00:20:11.519 --> 00:20:18.720
Like, no matter what, and I think that's a lesson that I'm learning is like, you know, I feel guilty all the time.
00:20:18.880 --> 00:20:26.079
Like, just to be open, like I feel guilty all the time for like, gosh, I must have betrayed him, like I can only imagine how he feels.
00:20:26.240 --> 00:20:40.240
Like, and then you read in the scriptures, like this, this not to be like crude, but this man, this dude is all knowing, like, and here we are putting a judgment and something finite on something that's infinite, and someone that's infinite, right?
00:20:40.400 --> 00:20:51.519
Yeah, and it's just so beautiful to like be taught by the Spirit and to really see like how our loving Heavenly Father and Savior like really interact with us.
00:20:52.559 --> 00:20:54.559
Yeah, no, that's super awesome.
00:20:54.799 --> 00:20:56.640
I love those points that you guys make.
00:20:57.680 --> 00:21:05.359
Um the Lord really is always there for us, He loves us and truly cares for us.
00:21:05.680 --> 00:21:12.079
Um I kind of want to talk more about this uh the preparation that we talked about before.
00:21:12.319 --> 00:21:29.920
And I'd like to hear Allen's uh point of view or his his explanation of as an athlete, as a student, as a student athlete, um how are you able to prepare yourself spiritually to take on the day, not just in classes, um, but also on the football field.
00:21:30.000 --> 00:21:35.039
Like what are you able to do or what do you do to prepare for for these situations?
00:21:36.000 --> 00:21:54.319
So I think one thing to say is that Southern Virginia is such a an amazing environment to be able to see those spiritual aspects of those miracles and and to be able to be prepared, right?
00:21:54.880 --> 00:22:05.519
One thing that I've really learned on the mission that I will forever apply into My daily life is to be able to serve others.
00:22:05.680 --> 00:22:09.039
Like find the one, seek the one, right?
00:22:09.200 --> 00:22:10.960
Just like Russell and Nelson.
00:22:11.440 --> 00:22:26.079
Um I always in my morning prayers, I always ask Heavenly Father to bless me with opportunities to serve the one, or to find the one, or to seek the one, whoever it may be.
00:22:26.720 --> 00:22:34.960
And, you know, and being able to focus on others instead of yourself is the true medicine of all things.
00:22:35.119 --> 00:22:46.160
And I've truly seen it on the mission, and especially right now in my life, that, you know, nobody, you know, it's not about you.
00:22:46.319 --> 00:22:47.519
It's not about you.
00:22:48.240 --> 00:22:58.240
But once we figure out that we are here to serve others, just like Jesus Christ, that's that was his whole divine mission was to serve others.
00:22:58.319 --> 00:22:59.200
And that's all he did.
00:22:59.279 --> 00:23:01.440
And he lived a perfect life.
00:23:01.680 --> 00:23:09.359
And if he wants us to strive to live a perfect life, we should be able to serve others as one of our number one priorities.
00:23:09.599 --> 00:23:11.680
And it's it doesn't have to be big.
00:23:11.920 --> 00:23:19.440
Um it could just simply say, you know, just say hi to someone that you don't know and just compliment someone.
00:23:19.599 --> 00:23:23.599
And I've truly seen a huge change ever since I've done that.
00:23:23.839 --> 00:23:40.720
And I think, you know, and Southern Virginia is a beautiful opportunity to exercise that the type of environment that you are around with, with others who are also striving to serve others and who are also disciples of Jesus Christ.
00:23:41.200 --> 00:23:50.720
And it's helped me to find a lot of joy and and helped me remember like what my purpose is, right?
00:23:50.799 --> 00:23:54.400
And who I am as a person and who I identify.
00:23:54.480 --> 00:24:07.920
I'm not a football player, I'm not a you know, I'm not a a classmate, I'm not, you know, I'm not a guy just on this podcast, like I'm I'm a child of God, right?
00:24:08.480 --> 00:24:19.119
And so once we start focusing on others and to be able to serve one another, then we can be able to know that you know what our true identity is.
00:24:19.200 --> 00:24:25.119
And that's what helped has helped me to always be prepared for for whatever, right?
00:24:25.200 --> 00:24:33.119
If somebody needs help on on the road or or with homework, it it creates a lot of friendship as well.
00:24:33.279 --> 00:24:45.119
Like I've made a whole lot of friendship around here at Southern Virginia, and not only it it's blessed me and my life, and I'm I'm sure it's blessed others to be able to know that they are seen, right?
00:24:45.200 --> 00:24:52.079
Because we live in a fallen world and we live in a world where it's you know it's it's very lonely, right?
00:24:52.559 --> 00:24:57.920
We experience lots of loneliness, especially through social media, and feel like we're we're not enough.
00:24:58.240 --> 00:25:06.799
But when we start being able to focus on others, we can be able to see that, so yeah.
00:25:07.039 --> 00:25:09.279
I I love that.
00:25:09.440 --> 00:25:27.680
It's it's pretty cool to see how we are able to find solace in daily well, I guess President Nelson just called it spiritual momentum, really.
00:25:27.759 --> 00:25:27.920
Yeah.
00:25:28.079 --> 00:25:32.880
Like, yeah, like service is definitely I don't know, man.
00:25:33.039 --> 00:25:38.720
Like, I wish there was a different word for service because it makes it sound so like I don't know, like you know what I mean?
00:25:38.799 --> 00:25:44.640
Like when like I feel like like there's a worldly idea to the term service, yeah.
00:25:44.880 --> 00:25:56.799
And when I hear like anyone who has who's a Christian or like make covenants with the savior, yeah, and they use the term service, I think it's really like mourn with those that mourn, comfort those that sin and need of comfort, right?
00:25:56.880 --> 00:25:59.359
Like it's that Christ-like love that you're talking about.
00:25:59.519 --> 00:26:01.519
Yeah, and you're you're a great example of that, dude.
00:26:01.599 --> 00:26:08.319
Like it's been cool to see like as your teammate and shout out Todd Nuttle back at home, right?
00:26:09.119 --> 00:26:10.160
Back in the 801.
00:26:10.960 --> 00:26:11.839
801, baby.
00:26:12.079 --> 00:26:13.119
This one's really Todd.
00:26:13.519 --> 00:26:24.000
No, dude, like hearing hearing him and like some of your other peers like talk about like you as just an individual disciple, like for sure, dude.
00:26:24.079 --> 00:26:33.759
Like it's there's no coincidence that you're here and like you know, definitely, definitely one of the Lord's instruments and in helping others for sure, dude.
00:26:34.000 --> 00:26:38.640
So I yeah, I can I can testify that what my companion has said is true.
00:26:39.039 --> 00:26:39.920
I appreciate you, bro.
00:26:40.079 --> 00:26:40.559
For sure.
00:26:41.759 --> 00:26:42.400
I love it.
00:26:42.640 --> 00:26:43.440
I love it.
00:26:43.680 --> 00:26:48.640
Um so we're gonna wrap things up here a little bit, but Don, I'm gonna throw you on the spot one last time.
00:26:48.960 --> 00:26:49.680
Alright, sweet.
00:26:49.839 --> 00:26:56.799
Um, so kind of our theme of this season, season two of On the Path, is to love, share, and invite.
00:26:57.279 --> 00:27:02.240
What is something you would like to invite our listeners to do in the next week?
00:27:02.799 --> 00:27:03.359
Ooh.
00:27:04.319 --> 00:27:07.440
That's a that's a big, that's a big one.
00:27:07.680 --> 00:27:08.559
You're timed too.
00:27:11.519 --> 00:27:15.839
Um I think I would love to invite y'all.
00:27:17.440 --> 00:27:21.759
I mean, I guess just what we've been talking about is to be able to find the one.
00:27:22.480 --> 00:27:27.359
Um not only find the one, seek the one, and nourish the one.
00:27:27.759 --> 00:27:42.799
Um because it's truly helped me to step back from my reality of life and to be able to focus on others and to be able to see the true blessing and and the joy that comes with it.
00:27:43.200 --> 00:27:45.039
Um so yeah.
00:27:45.200 --> 00:27:46.960
So yeah, that's the find the one.
00:27:47.200 --> 00:27:47.759
Find the one.
00:27:47.920 --> 00:27:48.400
Find the one.
00:27:48.799 --> 00:27:49.279
Awesome.
00:27:49.359 --> 00:27:50.160
I love it.
00:27:50.559 --> 00:27:52.880
Well, Dal, thanks for coming on, man.
00:27:53.119 --> 00:27:53.920
Appreciate you guys.
00:27:54.160 --> 00:27:55.440
This is this is amazing.
00:27:55.680 --> 00:27:56.079
We love you.
00:27:56.240 --> 00:27:57.599
So let's get it dub this weekend, yeah.
00:27:57.759 --> 00:27:58.079
Let's do it.
00:27:58.160 --> 00:27:58.480
Let's do it.
00:27:58.640 --> 00:27:58.960
Let's do it.
00:27:59.039 --> 00:27:59.359
Let's do it.
00:27:59.519 --> 00:28:00.240
Let's do it, man.
00:28:00.640 --> 00:28:01.119
Yeah.
00:28:01.359 --> 00:28:04.319
Yeah, thanks everyone again for tuning in to another episode.
00:28:04.480 --> 00:28:07.599
Thanks again to Dalin for joining us for this one.
00:28:07.839 --> 00:28:11.519
Um, like he said, we invite you guys to find the one.
00:28:11.680 --> 00:28:15.039
Find the one that's feels lonely, lost, confused.
00:28:15.119 --> 00:28:20.480
Um, help them know that we love them, you love them, and that the Lord loves them as well.
00:28:20.640 --> 00:28:26.799
Um, Jesus Christ is there for each and every one of us, no matter what situation we're in in our lives right now.
00:28:27.279 --> 00:28:35.519
Um but make sure you share this with friends, family, share this with whoever needs to hear it, whoever needs an uplifting message this week.
00:28:36.000 --> 00:28:48.559
And um continue to check the the the Instagram account, uh check our check our social medias for for upcoming um episodes, for for updates throughout the week.
00:28:48.880 --> 00:28:54.079
Um but yeah, thank you again for everyone, uh, for your continued support and and everything.
00:28:54.160 --> 00:28:56.799
And always remember everyone to stay on the path.
00:28:57.200 --> 00:28:57.920
Jesus loves you.
00:28:58.160 --> 00:28:59.119
Jesus loves you.
00:00:03.279 --> 00:00:06.639
Welcome back everyone to another episode of On the Path.
00:00:07.360 --> 00:00:11.839
We're here again with another guest who Jackson is going to introduce for us this week.
00:00:12.240 --> 00:00:13.839
Yep, this is Devon Hill.
00:00:14.320 --> 00:00:16.000
He's from Orham, Utah.
00:00:16.160 --> 00:00:21.280
He is a teammate of mine on the Southern Virginia football team, plays cornerback.
00:00:21.519 --> 00:00:24.719
And yeah, Devon, tell us a little bit more about yourself, Dave.
00:00:25.199 --> 00:00:25.679
Yeah.
00:00:26.320 --> 00:00:30.399
Well, I'm from Orham, Utah, which is actually where you're from as well.
00:00:30.640 --> 00:00:31.280
This is true.
00:00:31.519 --> 00:00:35.119
So but I've grew up there throughout my life.
00:00:36.000 --> 00:00:48.240
I have two older brothers, one younger brother, and and I also served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Texas Dallas East mission.
00:00:49.679 --> 00:00:54.719
And just like you said, I've played football at Orm High School.
00:00:55.200 --> 00:01:01.600
And now I'm here playing Southern Virginia, and it's been it's been fun.
00:01:01.920 --> 00:01:02.960
Heck yeah, you are, dude.
00:01:03.200 --> 00:01:03.520
Thank you.
00:01:03.759 --> 00:01:04.239
Heck yeah.
00:01:04.560 --> 00:01:05.280
Exciting, man.
00:01:05.359 --> 00:01:06.000
Happy to have you.
00:01:06.159 --> 00:01:07.040
Yeah, that's awesome.
00:01:07.519 --> 00:01:08.640
I'm gonna take a second.
00:01:08.799 --> 00:01:12.000
Um thanks to Alan for coming and joining us today, first of all.
00:01:12.159 --> 00:01:13.280
Uh we're happy to have him.
00:01:13.359 --> 00:01:14.560
Uh he's a really awesome guy.
00:01:14.640 --> 00:01:16.239
I've heard really good things about him.
00:01:16.400 --> 00:01:22.879
Um, but I'm gonna take a second to introduce our theme for this week that we're gonna be discussing with Alan.
00:01:23.120 --> 00:01:33.120
And so last week in my institute class, we were talking about miracles and the miracles that Jesus Christ has performed throughout his life, and he performed many, as we all know.
00:01:33.280 --> 00:01:38.000
Um but one stuck out specifically to me, and it's the miracle of him walking on water.
00:01:38.159 --> 00:01:44.239
And it's not only the fact that Jesus is walking on water, like obviously that's insane, that's amazing.
00:01:44.480 --> 00:01:49.599
Um, but it's the faith that Peter had to step out onto the water as well.
00:01:50.000 --> 00:01:54.000
But there's also that moment when Peter started to doubt and he fell into the water.
00:01:54.159 --> 00:01:58.239
So we're gonna we're gonna read those scriptures and then we're gonna talk about them together today.
00:01:58.400 --> 00:01:59.359
So I'll read them.
00:01:59.840 --> 00:02:03.280
Um and we'll be reading in Matthew chapter 14.
00:02:03.519 --> 00:02:06.560
I'm gonna read verses 25 to 31.
00:02:06.959 --> 00:02:13.039
Um And it says, And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea.
00:02:13.199 --> 00:02:19.759
And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit, and they cried out for fear.
00:02:20.000 --> 00:02:26.400
But straight straight away Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer, it is I, be not afraid.
00:02:26.639 --> 00:02:32.800
And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water.
00:02:33.039 --> 00:02:34.319
And he said, Come.
00:02:34.560 --> 00:02:39.919
And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water to go to Jesus.
00:02:40.159 --> 00:02:47.680
But when he saw the wind boistro boisterous, he was afraid, and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me.
00:02:47.840 --> 00:02:57.199
And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand and caught him, and said unto him, Oh, O thou of little faith, where didst thou doubt?
00:02:58.000 --> 00:03:02.800
So, in these in these verses there's lots of lessons to be learned.
00:03:02.960 --> 00:03:15.840
Um I'd like for us to kind of uh stick on verse uh 27, kind of before Peter, uh just where it says, Be of good cheer, it is I be not afraid.
00:03:16.159 --> 00:03:28.400
And so one of my favorite things um or one of my favorite phrases in the book or in the book of Mormon, the Bible, and whatever scripture it is, is either fear not or be not afraid.
00:03:28.639 --> 00:03:41.360
Um, in your life in in sports, whatever it may be, when have you had a moment where you took that and like used it and applied it into your life was be not afraid, fear not?
00:03:42.000 --> 00:03:49.680
Yeah, um, I mean honestly, I I saw it a lot in in sports.
00:03:49.919 --> 00:03:59.280
Um obviously playing playing corner is probably the hardest position, in my opinion, either corner or quarterback.
00:03:59.520 --> 00:04:08.719
But you can be able to do your job throughout the whole the whole game, and you make one mistake and it could lose lose the game.
00:04:09.120 --> 00:04:32.560
Um But I think one thing that has helped me to be able to not be afraid in times of hardship or where our circumstances are um very very difficult is being very prepared in the temporal and spiritual things.
00:04:32.800 --> 00:04:53.680
So in football, I it's very important that we be prepared of who we are facing and to be able to see the scattering reports and watch a lot of film and so that when there is a situation where it's down to the line of whoever is gonna, you know, win, um the last minutes, then you know, you're you are prepared.
00:04:53.759 --> 00:04:54.720
You won't be afraid, right?
00:04:54.800 --> 00:04:58.720
And that's just in the in the gospel, right?
00:04:59.680 --> 00:05:01.839
Um especially on my mission.
00:05:02.160 --> 00:05:17.279
Um there were times where especially I served in Texas and there was lots of Bible bashers, and you feel like you you feel like you feel like you need to be very prepared of to be able to bash them, or feel like you need to prepare to be able to know what to say.
00:05:17.680 --> 00:05:32.079
I remember my very first lesson I had on my mission, um, and you know, I felt like I was I was prepared, but and then my before the lesson, my trainer's like, okay, you're gonna teach about faith and repentance.
00:05:32.240 --> 00:05:35.759
And when he said that, I'm like, wait, what's what's faith and repentance again?
00:05:35.839 --> 00:05:39.839
Like I I was going through, like, preach my gospel, I was like, okay, like what is it again?
00:05:40.079 --> 00:05:44.959
And we go into the meeting, and I'm like, uh, I don't know what to say.
00:05:45.360 --> 00:06:01.839
But then when it was my turn to like speak, one thing that I was prepared was was being able to rely on my savior and to especially rely on the Holy Ghost as my constant companionship and to be my mouthpiece.
00:06:02.240 --> 00:06:27.839
And I remember when when I just started to speak, like I knew that it was it was right, and the person that we were teaching hit it he he understood what faith and repentance was, and and that was like I think that was the the huge turning point of my mission was being able to trust in in the savior in in times of difficulties.
00:06:28.319 --> 00:06:41.519
Um whether that be on the mission or through sports or through school, like it's it's very important to make sure that we are always having the spirit with us.
00:06:41.759 --> 00:06:48.800
Even if we feel like we are not prepared or not, as long as we have the spirit, we can be able to know that we can find those miracles.
00:06:50.879 --> 00:06:52.079
Yeah, I love that.
00:06:52.240 --> 00:07:11.920
Uh it reminds me of uh it's funny you bring her preach my gospel because you know, even two years after I've returned home from my mission, I find you know, I find myself in you know life's path and the lessons I've learned just from preaching my gospel alone, right?
00:07:12.000 --> 00:07:28.720
But anyways, to the point, um President Nelson talks about like um Captain Moroni and you know like how the Lamanites were gonna come like destroy all different parts of the land of of Nephi or whatever it is that they lived at at the time.
00:07:29.279 --> 00:07:43.120
And instead of just you know um just relying on prayer and and things like that, it says that Moroni like prepared the people and like built walls and all these other things, right?
00:07:43.199 --> 00:07:51.360
And President Nelson talks about how that needs to be like our like mantra in these last days, right?
00:07:51.519 --> 00:07:56.639
Not like be like super fearful and like but be prepared, right?
00:07:56.800 --> 00:08:04.560
It's like it's like the story or the parable of like the the virgins and like the the lamps and the oil, right?
00:08:04.639 --> 00:08:07.839
It's like you gotta have oil in your lamp, right?
00:08:08.079 --> 00:08:18.879
You don't wanna be the individuals that are uh kicked out or not let into the the wedding because of you know you didn't have oil in your lamp, right?
00:08:19.279 --> 00:08:30.639
And you know that comes from you know it's the primary answers, but you know, it's easy on our missions, yeah, right, to just to like sit there and be like, yeah, I can never lose these habits.
00:08:30.800 --> 00:08:32.480
Bro, it's been two years now.
00:08:33.200 --> 00:08:36.559
It's it's crazy how how hard it is sometimes.
00:08:36.799 --> 00:08:38.080
Oh, for sure, dude.
00:08:38.240 --> 00:08:44.000
Like, like every time I hear like be prepared, I'm like, I wish I had that name tag on, bro.
00:08:45.279 --> 00:08:47.039
God's talking, dude.
00:08:47.120 --> 00:08:52.399
I remember giving a talk just like a few months ago, and I'm like, man, this is not the same.
00:08:52.720 --> 00:08:53.679
This is not the same.
00:08:53.759 --> 00:08:56.000
I'm like, oh, I actually have to try now.
00:08:58.559 --> 00:09:12.720
The spirit's not clicking, but I just one thing that that stuck out to me was like sometimes we we need to make sure that we do our part because that's what the Lord asked us to do.
00:09:12.799 --> 00:09:22.320
Like He wants us to do as much as we can, and once we do that, we can be able to know that He'll provide us the way.
00:09:22.720 --> 00:09:23.360
You know?
00:09:25.039 --> 00:09:30.080
I actually had a funny experience this last Sunday um talking about being prepared.
00:09:30.320 --> 00:09:43.279
Uh so I'm in the bishopric in our YSA, and it's it's it's my it's my month to conduct, so you know, I have my speakers, I text them during the week, I was like, hey, here's your reminder, like you're speaking on Sunday.
00:09:43.440 --> 00:09:47.919
Um didn't speak, maybe maybe next month.
00:09:48.159 --> 00:09:56.639
Um but but I'm sitting there, church starts at 10:30, it's 1025, and none of my speakers have shown up.
00:09:56.799 --> 00:09:58.720
And I'm sitting there just freaking out.
00:09:58.799 --> 00:10:00.960
I'm like, I don't know what I'm gonna do.
00:10:01.120 --> 00:10:03.519
The first counselor instead present sitting next to me.
00:10:03.600 --> 00:10:08.320
He's like, hey, the high councilman, if you go talk to him, he'll give a talk.
00:10:08.720 --> 00:10:10.480
Like, I don't want to do that.
00:10:10.559 --> 00:10:11.919
So I like quickly text all of them.
00:10:12.000 --> 00:10:13.200
I'm like, are you guys coming?
00:10:13.360 --> 00:10:15.279
Like, I need some help, please.
00:10:15.679 --> 00:10:25.120
But like, it was probably one of those moments where it's like they knew they told me they were gonna come, like I need to calm down and just be not afraid, right?
00:10:25.279 --> 00:10:25.440
Right.
00:10:25.840 --> 00:10:35.360
And 1028, the first one walks in, a minute after the next one walks in, and then two minutes later, the last one he texts me, he says, I'm 20 seconds away, I'll be there.
00:10:35.600 --> 00:10:37.759
Like, alright, I'm starting the meeting.
00:10:38.000 --> 00:10:39.279
So they all showed up.
00:10:39.519 --> 00:10:48.879
Um, but again, later that meeting, they all finished up their talks, and we still had 15 minutes, and I was like, crap, now I have to get up.
00:10:49.279 --> 00:10:57.519
And I just got up and shared this little thought, like this thought that's been stuck in my mind, talking about how God loves us enough to hurt us, right?
00:10:57.919 --> 00:11:03.919
Um, so I just shared a little thought on that for five minutes, and it ended up being okay, right?
00:11:04.080 --> 00:11:05.279
I just was stressed.
00:11:05.360 --> 00:11:19.279
I was worried that nobody was gonna show up and I was gonna have to talk for 45 minutes, but but you know, it's one of those things it's like, you know, when you're prepared and you send the word out like other like God will help you, right?
00:11:19.679 --> 00:11:21.679
He'll bless you and he'll make sure everything's okay.
00:11:21.759 --> 00:11:26.639
So I might have been stressed for five minutes, but everything worked out and I was okay.
00:11:27.279 --> 00:11:30.240
Um but yeah, it's kinda it's hard.
00:11:31.279 --> 00:11:32.639
It's not always easy to be prepared.
00:11:32.720 --> 00:11:47.360
Like if you come from home from a mission and maybe you fall out of some habits, maybe you keep some, and it's just it's you you stress over it, but overall, as long as you're keeping something, you're staying consistent in something, the Lord will bless you in certain ways.
00:11:48.080 --> 00:11:58.480
Um but let's let's talk a little bit about Peter now and his his uh his falling into the water, right?
00:11:58.960 --> 00:12:02.080
So we saw that he was prepared, right?
00:12:02.399 --> 00:12:09.919
He had gone through so many things, he's watched, witnessed so many miracles, he knew that Jesus was the Christ, he was the Messiah, he was the chosen one.
00:12:10.879 --> 00:12:16.240
But there was still something that grabbed his attention and started to fall into the water.
00:12:16.879 --> 00:12:39.120
00:12:39.200 --> 00:12:42.320
So it's like I don't know what what what do you guys think about that?
00:12:42.399 --> 00:12:45.679
What are your your thoughts on those scriptures, on those verses?
00:12:46.399 --> 00:12:54.639
Um I just really think it's it's very important to think celestial, right?
00:12:55.279 --> 00:13:02.960
Because Peter, when he was walking on water, he was thinking celestial, his his focus was towards on Jesus Christ.
00:13:03.120 --> 00:13:05.519
That's part of thinking celestial.
00:13:06.159 --> 00:13:24.320
But when we get caught up in in the worldly things, which we all do, especially me, either the praise of the world or you know, the materialistic things, it can draw us away from from our savior.
00:13:25.039 --> 00:13:33.840
And when times do get hard, it it can get very foggy on where our resources are at.
00:13:33.919 --> 00:13:36.799
That's that's the blessing of being able to be on the mission, right?
00:13:36.879 --> 00:13:53.120
Because when you come home, when we do feel like we have fallen back, we know where our sources, even though we feel like life is, you know, that cloud comes in whenever we focus on temporal things or or the the worldly things, right?
00:13:53.519 --> 00:14:01.440
But we can be able to always know that where our main source is of light, which is which is Jesus Christ.
00:14:02.000 --> 00:14:17.440
And for me, it's to be able to focus my on my Savior at all times, whenever I feel like I have fallen back, is ask myself if I've if I'm doing the little things, right?
00:14:17.919 --> 00:14:29.600
Because just like those um that scripture in the Book of Mormon, small things can by small and simple By small and simple things can great things be brought to pass.
00:14:30.480 --> 00:14:45.039
And I truly believe that and have seen it in my life, and and it's just you know, saying your morning prayers, nightly prayers, and deciding your scriptures like it just always makes a huge difference.
00:14:45.279 --> 00:15:03.440
Always makes a huge difference and helps us to know that whenever we are, you know, have fallen back or feel like we we are like Peter and fell through the water, we can be able to look up and call upon our Savior and he'll his arm of mercy is always extended towards us.
00:15:03.519 --> 00:15:04.960
That's the beautiful thing.
00:15:05.200 --> 00:15:11.600
Um that he's always inviting us to come onto him, always inviting us to change and to be better.
00:15:11.840 --> 00:15:23.360
Because he sees our full potential and and we need him to be able to help ourselves to know what our full potential is um spiritually and and yeah.
00:15:23.759 --> 00:15:24.000
Yeah.
00:15:25.120 --> 00:15:34.720
I love what you said, you quoted I think it's in 2 Ephi, uh, where he says like mine arm of mercy is extended towards towards you, right?
00:15:35.600 --> 00:15:47.440
You know, with Peter the past six months I've I've had many different uh learning experiences from the perspective of of Peter, right?
00:15:48.080 --> 00:16:04.240
And one of them, along with um, I don't want to call it a chastising experience, but a learning experience, right, from falling into the water um after he was walking, was uh when he denied the savior three times, right?
00:16:05.039 --> 00:16:11.279
Uh and then obviously fast forward to what was it, three years later, right?
00:16:11.519 --> 00:16:17.360
The saviors, um, at this point from the perspective of the apostles, he's dead and he's gone, right?
00:16:17.440 --> 00:16:22.240
Like we they have no idea where he's at, they don't know what's going on, and so what do they do?
00:16:22.399 --> 00:16:26.960
They return to their nets and they start fishing, um, as we all know.
00:16:27.200 --> 00:16:29.679
And fast forward, right?
00:16:29.759 --> 00:16:32.480
They see a figure off in the distance, right?
00:16:32.720 --> 00:16:38.720
And they're like, Who is this who's who's this guy telling us to just cast our net on the other side?
00:16:38.799 --> 00:16:40.000
You think we haven't thought of that?
00:16:40.240 --> 00:16:41.679
Like, what do you mean?
00:16:41.919 --> 00:16:43.039
And what do they do, right?
00:16:43.120 --> 00:16:48.720
They they give it a shot and they they do it, and it says like they they can't even fit it into the boat, right?
00:16:48.799 --> 00:16:53.279
Yeah, and then I think it's Peter that like recognizes that it's like the Lord.
00:16:53.360 --> 00:16:54.799
So they swim out, right?
00:16:55.679 --> 00:17:02.480
And you know, then they have that iconic, like I hate using the word iconic, that's not the right word.
00:17:02.799 --> 00:17:09.920
This unforgettable lesson, right, with the savior as they're eating the fish.
00:17:10.079 --> 00:17:19.039
You know, they're they're laughing, they're having a good time, and then the savior being, you know, the savior turns to Peter and he's like, lovest thou me more than these, right?
00:17:19.200 --> 00:17:24.240
And then Peter, as we know, is like, yay Lord, like thou knowest that I love thee.
00:17:24.400 --> 00:17:26.720
And then he repeats that three times, right?
00:17:27.599 --> 00:17:44.880
And what what I love about that whole lesson, right, relating it back to what you were saying, Ben, and what you were saying as well, Dallin, as far as fear, failure, and then redemption through the savior, right?
00:17:46.559 --> 00:17:58.079
When I think of my favorite attributes of the savior, my one of my favorite names is Redeemer and Advocate.
00:17:58.480 --> 00:17:59.599
Yeah, yeah.
00:17:59.839 --> 00:18:08.480
And specifically with the story, Redeemer, because like we often think, right, like it is on us.
00:18:08.799 --> 00:18:10.799
Our salvation is on us, right?
00:18:11.039 --> 00:18:13.279
In a sense, because of agency, for sure.
00:18:13.440 --> 00:18:16.400
Like we we we get to choose.
00:18:17.519 --> 00:18:23.519
But at the same time, like there's a reason why it says in the scriptures, like he's the author and finisher of our faith.
00:18:23.680 --> 00:18:38.720
Meaning, once we make those covenants, once, like Peter, we are bound to him, like, and we completely give our will to him, like our our destiny is in our hands at that point.
00:18:38.880 --> 00:18:51.039
And the point I'm trying to get at is it's taken me and will take me a lifetime, but I'm I'm starting to feel little nudges from the spirit to help me really understand what grace really means, right?
00:18:51.200 --> 00:18:59.839
It's it's not it's not what we think as okay, if I do everything I can, then the savior helps me out, right?
00:19:00.000 --> 00:19:07.440
It's it's no, once I've exercised faith in him, like then his arm of mercy is is extended towards us, right?
00:19:07.599 --> 00:19:09.599
And the same thing with Peter right here, right?
00:19:10.640 --> 00:19:14.720
The savior didn't necessarily punish him, right?
00:19:15.119 --> 00:19:20.799
Like the punishment was like you can imagine how guilty that dude felt.
00:19:20.880 --> 00:19:24.319
Like, yeah, you already felt the punishment, he already felt it, man.
00:19:24.480 --> 00:19:25.359
Yeah, he already felt it.
00:19:25.599 --> 00:19:27.680
The absence of the spirit, like for sure, right?
00:19:28.319 --> 00:19:34.160
And instead of the savior in that moment telling Peter, like, you're gonna deny me three times.
00:19:34.559 --> 00:19:43.279
Like, and like, you know, to us the savior could have been like, Yep, so therefore, like, why would I have you in my circle, right?
00:19:43.920 --> 00:19:47.839
Like, it didn't come as a surprise to him.
00:19:48.160 --> 00:19:52.000
Not and like, I think we need to understand that ourselves, right?
00:19:52.160 --> 00:19:56.880
Like, like, I guarantee you the savior knew that Peter was gonna fall in the water.
00:19:56.960 --> 00:19:59.359
Yeah, like, and it's not a surprise to him, right?
00:19:59.440 --> 00:20:04.880
And so when he asked him that question, oh ye a little faith, like it wasn't the savior saying, I'm surprised.
00:20:05.279 --> 00:20:07.119
Like it was it was for Peter.
00:20:07.279 --> 00:20:11.200
It was like it was like, don't you understand that I'm here?
00:20:11.519 --> 00:20:18.720
Like, no matter what, and I think that's a lesson that I'm learning is like, you know, I feel guilty all the time.
00:20:18.880 --> 00:20:26.079
Like, just to be open, like I feel guilty all the time for like, gosh, I must have betrayed him, like I can only imagine how he feels.
00:20:26.240 --> 00:20:40.240
Like, and then you read in the scriptures, like this, this not to be like crude, but this man, this dude is all knowing, like, and here we are putting a judgment and something finite on something that's infinite, and someone that's infinite, right?
00:20:40.400 --> 00:20:51.519
Yeah, and it's just so beautiful to like be taught by the Spirit and to really see like how our loving Heavenly Father and Savior like really interact with us.
00:20:52.559 --> 00:20:54.559
Yeah, no, that's super awesome.
00:20:54.799 --> 00:20:56.640
I love those points that you guys make.
00:20:57.680 --> 00:21:05.359
Um the Lord really is always there for us, He loves us and truly cares for us.
00:21:05.680 --> 00:21:12.079
Um I kind of want to talk more about this uh the preparation that we talked about before.
00:21:12.319 --> 00:21:29.920
And I'd like to hear Allen's uh point of view or his his explanation of as an athlete, as a student, as a student athlete, um how are you able to prepare yourself spiritually to take on the day, not just in classes, um, but also on the football field.
00:21:30.000 --> 00:21:35.039
Like what are you able to do or what do you do to prepare for for these situations?
00:21:36.000 --> 00:21:54.319
So I think one thing to say is that Southern Virginia is such a an amazing environment to be able to see those spiritual aspects of those miracles and and to be able to be prepared, right?
00:21:54.880 --> 00:22:05.519
One thing that I've really learned on the mission that I will forever apply into My daily life is to be able to serve others.
00:22:05.680 --> 00:22:09.039
Like find the one, seek the one, right?
00:22:09.200 --> 00:22:10.960
Just like Russell and Nelson.
00:22:11.440 --> 00:22:26.079
Um I always in my morning prayers, I always ask Heavenly Father to bless me with opportunities to serve the one, or to find the one, or to seek the one, whoever it may be.
00:22:26.720 --> 00:22:34.960
And, you know, and being able to focus on others instead of yourself is the true medicine of all things.
00:22:35.119 --> 00:22:46.160
And I've truly seen it on the mission, and especially right now in my life, that, you know, nobody, you know, it's not about you.
00:22:46.319 --> 00:22:47.519
It's not about you.
00:22:48.240 --> 00:22:58.240
But once we figure out that we are here to serve others, just like Jesus Christ, that's that was his whole divine mission was to serve others.
00:22:58.319 --> 00:22:59.200
And that's all he did.
00:22:59.279 --> 00:23:01.440
And he lived a perfect life.
00:23:01.680 --> 00:23:09.359
And if he wants us to strive to live a perfect life, we should be able to serve others as one of our number one priorities.
00:23:09.599 --> 00:23:11.680
And it's it doesn't have to be big.
00:23:11.920 --> 00:23:19.440
Um it could just simply say, you know, just say hi to someone that you don't know and just compliment someone.
00:23:19.599 --> 00:23:23.599
And I've truly seen a huge change ever since I've done that.
00:23:23.839 --> 00:23:40.720
And I think, you know, and Southern Virginia is a beautiful opportunity to exercise that the type of environment that you are around with, with others who are also striving to serve others and who are also disciples of Jesus Christ.
00:23:41.200 --> 00:23:50.720
And it's helped me to find a lot of joy and and helped me remember like what my purpose is, right?
00:23:50.799 --> 00:23:54.400
And who I am as a person and who I identify.
00:23:54.480 --> 00:24:07.920
I'm not a football player, I'm not a you know, I'm not a a classmate, I'm not, you know, I'm not a guy just on this podcast, like I'm I'm a child of God, right?
00:24:08.480 --> 00:24:19.119
And so once we start focusing on others and to be able to serve one another, then we can be able to know that you know what our true identity is.
00:24:19.200 --> 00:24:25.119
And that's what helped has helped me to always be prepared for for whatever, right?
00:24:25.200 --> 00:24:33.119
If somebody needs help on on the road or or with homework, it it creates a lot of friendship as well.
00:24:33.279 --> 00:24:45.119
Like I've made a whole lot of friendship around here at Southern Virginia, and not only it it's blessed me and my life, and I'm I'm sure it's blessed others to be able to know that they are seen, right?
00:24:45.200 --> 00:24:52.079
Because we live in a fallen world and we live in a world where it's you know it's it's very lonely, right?
00:24:52.559 --> 00:24:57.920
We experience lots of loneliness, especially through social media, and feel like we're we're not enough.
00:24:58.240 --> 00:25:06.799
But when we start being able to focus on others, we can be able to see that, so yeah.
00:25:07.039 --> 00:25:09.279
I I love that.
00:25:09.440 --> 00:25:27.680
It's it's pretty cool to see how we are able to find solace in daily well, I guess President Nelson just called it spiritual momentum, really.
00:25:27.759 --> 00:25:27.920
Yeah.
00:25:28.079 --> 00:25:32.880
Like, yeah, like service is definitely I don't know, man.
00:25:33.039 --> 00:25:38.720
Like, I wish there was a different word for service because it makes it sound so like I don't know, like you know what I mean?
00:25:38.799 --> 00:25:44.640
Like when like I feel like like there's a worldly idea to the term service, yeah.
00:25:44.880 --> 00:25:56.799
And when I hear like anyone who has who's a Christian or like make covenants with the savior, yeah, and they use the term service, I think it's really like mourn with those that mourn, comfort those that sin and need of comfort, right?
00:25:56.880 --> 00:25:59.359
Like it's that Christ-like love that you're talking about.
00:25:59.519 --> 00:26:01.519
Yeah, and you're you're a great example of that, dude.
00:26:01.599 --> 00:26:08.319
Like it's been cool to see like as your teammate and shout out Todd Nuttle back at home, right?
00:26:09.119 --> 00:26:10.160
Back in the 801.
00:26:10.960 --> 00:26:11.839
801, baby.
00:26:12.079 --> 00:26:13.119
This one's really Todd.
00:26:13.519 --> 00:26:24.000
No, dude, like hearing hearing him and like some of your other peers like talk about like you as just an individual disciple, like for sure, dude.
00:26:24.079 --> 00:26:33.759
Like it's there's no coincidence that you're here and like you know, definitely, definitely one of the Lord's instruments and in helping others for sure, dude.
00:26:34.000 --> 00:26:38.640
So I yeah, I can I can testify that what my companion has said is true.
00:26:39.039 --> 00:26:39.920
I appreciate you, bro.
00:26:40.079 --> 00:26:40.559
For sure.
00:26:41.759 --> 00:26:42.400
I love it.
00:26:42.640 --> 00:26:43.440
I love it.
00:26:43.680 --> 00:26:48.640
Um so we're gonna wrap things up here a little bit, but Don, I'm gonna throw you on the spot one last time.
00:26:48.960 --> 00:26:49.680
Alright, sweet.
00:26:49.839 --> 00:26:56.799
Um, so kind of our theme of this season, season two of On the Path, is to love, share, and invite.
00:26:57.279 --> 00:27:02.240
What is something you would like to invite our listeners to do in the next week?
00:27:02.799 --> 00:27:03.359
Ooh.
00:27:04.319 --> 00:27:07.440
That's a that's a big, that's a big one.
00:27:07.680 --> 00:27:08.559
You're timed too.
00:27:11.519 --> 00:27:15.839
Um I think I would love to invite y'all.
00:27:17.440 --> 00:27:21.759
I mean, I guess just what we've been talking about is to be able to find the one.
00:27:22.480 --> 00:27:27.359
Um not only find the one, seek the one, and nourish the one.
00:27:27.759 --> 00:27:42.799
Um because it's truly helped me to step back from my reality of life and to be able to focus on others and to be able to see the true blessing and and the joy that comes with it.
00:27:43.200 --> 00:27:45.039
Um so yeah.
00:27:45.200 --> 00:27:46.960
So yeah, that's the find the one.
00:27:47.200 --> 00:27:47.759
Find the one.
00:27:47.920 --> 00:27:48.400
Find the one.
00:27:48.799 --> 00:27:49.279
Awesome.
00:27:49.359 --> 00:27:50.160
I love it.
00:27:50.559 --> 00:27:52.880
Well, Dal, thanks for coming on, man.
00:27:53.119 --> 00:27:53.920
Appreciate you guys.
00:27:54.160 --> 00:27:55.440
This is this is amazing.
00:27:55.680 --> 00:27:56.079
We love you.
00:27:56.240 --> 00:27:57.599

Let's do it.
00:27:58.640 --> 00:27:58.960
Let's do it.
00:27:59.039 --> 00:27:59.359
Let's do it.
00:27:59.519 --> 00:28:00.240
Let's do it, man.
