ABOUT THIS EPISODE
# From Amish Roots to Air Force Leadership: Marti McCurdy's Journey
> Exploring discipline, management, and the art of motivation in the military.
Marti McCurdy shares a captivating journey from a small Amish Mennonite community in Pennsylvania to a fulfilling career in the Air Force. Her story is not just about service but about the lessons learned and the unique management style she developed along the way.
## The Path to the Air Force
Marti's decision to join the military was born out of a desire to avoid the burdens of student debt that plagued many of her peers. "I saw... they always had the college debt and no jobs. So I thought that's not gonna be me," she recalls. At just eighteen, with the backing of her parents (despite their initial disapproval), she embarked on her military journey, viewing it as an adventure rather than a daunting challenge.
## Lessons from Basic Training
Reflecting on her time in basic training, Marti emphasizes a powerful mindset: "It's six weeks, right? Like I could put up with a lot of things for six weeks." This perspective not only helped her endure but also shaped her outlook on challenges in life—understanding that discomfort is often temporary.
## Building Bonds and Management Philosophy
One of the most profound insights Marti gained from her military experience is the value of camaraderie. "The bonds that you build there are the most unique ever," she explains. This philosophy of teamwork and trust has heavily influenced her management style. "It gave me that structure for management, but I also learned that it doesn't resonate with everyone," she acknowledges, highlighting the importance of adapting her approach to suit diverse team dynamics.
## Curiosity as a Key Trait
Marti believes that curiosity is essential in any work environment. "If you don't have the curiosity behind it, you probably aren't in the right spot in the company," she asserts. Her own experiences have taught her how to unlock this curiosity in her employees by discovering what motivates them personally.
### A Turning Point
In a compelling example, Marti describes a formerly disengaged employee whose passion for family became the key to his motivation. After recognizing this, she creatively redirected a reward meant for him into an experience that nurtured his family ties, ultimately transforming his engagement and performance at work.
## The Importance of Technology in Defense
Marti also dives into the fascinating world of electronic warfare and radar technology, explaining its critical role in keeping pilots safe. She illustrates how advancements in these technologies have evolved since her early days, emphasizing the importance of understanding the science behind them to appreciate their significance in modern warfare.
As Marti reflects on her journey from a small town to a leadership role in the military and beyond, it becomes clear that the lessons learned extend far into everyday life and work. The combination of discipline, curiosity, and the ability to adapt has not only shaped her career but also the lives of those she leads.
