Cassie: Welcome to Obsessions After Dark, where the morally
Lori: That is
Cassie: grey are irresistible, the red flags wave proudly, and happily ever afters come with trigger warnings. We're your host, Cassie.
Lori: And Lori. Each week we're diving into the darkest corners of romance, breaking down the books, the characters, the chaos, and everything that keeps us turning pages long past midnight.
Cassie: Sorry, I'm having trouble with my with my notes. Give me just second. There
Lori: No, you're good.
Cassie: we go. Okay. This podcast discusses f Sorry.
Lori: One day we're gonna make a blooper reel.
Cassie: Yes.
Fallen Scynclair: Those are the best, I promise. You gotta do it.
Cassie: Okay.
Lori: Okay. You're gay, Cassie.
Cassie: This podcast discusses fictional books with Apparently I should have taken a nap. I'm so sorry. Okay.
Lori: You're good.
Fallen Scynclair: I was debating on doing that and then I I was scared I was oversleep, so
Cassie: Yeah.
Lori: Ha that's my biggest fear on recording
Cassie: Yeah.
Lori: day. Like I'm like, wada just in case.
Cassie: Yeah. Okay.
Lori: All right, Cassie, you're good.
Cassie: This podcast discusses fictional books and mature dark romance themes intended for adult readers, including potentially sensitive topics. Know your limits, check your triggers, and take care of your mental health. If a topic isn't for you, feel free to skip it. Your well-being comes first. Okay. Joining us today is narrator Fallen Sinclair. Fallen, thank you so much for coming. We are so excited to have you.
Fallen Scynclair: Hi. Yeah, absolutely. I'm really excited.
Lori: Well, and if you're watching this and thinking, Where is Fallen? That is on purpose. Fallen has decided to keep his face behind the voice. No, I didn't like that. Let me do that again. okay. Now if you're watching this and thinking, wait, where's Fallen? Yes, that is intentional. Fallen is keeping the face behind the voice a mystery, which honestly I kind of love.
Cassie: Yeah, it's so on brand with dark romance too, because when you're not listen oops. I'm so sorry. I hope this
Fallen Scynclair: It's okay.
Lori: It's good.
Cassie: isn't a common thing. Okay.
Lori: Ha ha
Cassie: Which is very on brand for dark romance because when you're listening to an audiobook, you're not picturing the person that's in the recording booth anyway, you're picturing the character that's in your head.
Lori: Exactly. So today we're gonna keep it that way. You get the iconic voice, you get the stories, you just don't get the face. So that actually makes us curious fall in. Was staying anonymous always intentional for you?
Fallen Scynclair: yeah, honestly. I can kinda go into how this kind of came about, I guess.
Lori: Yeah, please.
Fallen Scynclair: But yeah, no, I've always how should I say this? I totally accept a broop a booper reel. Like I we can totally make one.
Cassie: Yeah.
Lori: We'll do it just for you.
Cassie: Yeah.
Fallen Scynclair: Yeah, yeah, no. I've Definitely wanted to be faceless because where I started it was a lot of, you know, spicy stuff, right? And people who know me, you know, I just I don't I don't want people to know who I am, especially close friends and families, right? And yeah, it's definitely something they probably wouldn't support, you know. but also I think the for safety reasons too, you know, there's a lot of crazies out there and You know, that's something I wanted to just stick with for a while, you know. But you know, maybe there'll be a face reveal soon. We'll see. But I'm gonna try to ride this anonymous out for a while. so yeah.
Cassie: Do you feel like keeping your identity separate from the voice gives you a little bit more freedom create creative creatively? There we go.
Fallen Scynclair: Yeah.
Lori: Can't try that again, Cassia.
Cassie: I'm so sorry.
Fallen Scynclair: Ready? Take three. Action.
Cassie: Okay, yep. Yep. Do you feel like keeping your identity separate from the voice gives you a little bit more freedom creatively? What is that fucking
Fallen Scynclair: yeah, yeah, for sure.
Cassie: word? I'm so sorry, that word.
Lori: Just maybe leave that creatively word out.
Fallen Scynclair: Trust me, it's okay. I'm gonna be s I'll be stumbling.
Cassie: How about creative freedom? Can does that sound better? Creative freedom? Okay. There we go. Okay.
Lori: love that. Yeah. You have creative freedom, Cassie. Say it how you want.
Cassie: Mm-hmm.
Fallen Scynclair: You got it.
Cassie: Okay. Do you feel like keeping your identity separate from your voice gives you a little bit more creative freedom?
Fallen Scynclair: I I would think so. at least for me, you know. yeah, a lot of the stuff I do can get a bit, you know, spicy and, you know, not the norm, you know. And I don't know, I think I don't think I'll be able to watch myself do this, you know, on a camera. So I
Cassie: Mm.
Fallen Scynclair: wouldn't be able to take myself seriously, so but yeah.
Lori: I love that. So really the whole goal for you was because of those spice scenes to really kind of keep that life and your private life separate.
Fallen Scynclair: Yes, for sure. Mm-hmm.
Lori: Okay, love that. Do you feel like being anonymous ever lets you be able to step into the characters a little bit more because nobody knows?
Fallen Scynclair: yeah, I mean, from like a reader's stance, right, or a listener stance, I think it's it would help them more than it would help me, I guess, I would say. 'Cause I can be whoever you want me to be, right? I'm exactly what your imagination thinks I would look like, right? Just gosh, that was well I missed the voice already No no no one get that.
Cassie: Yeah.
Lori: Fallen
Fallen Scynclair: No
Lori: fallen. Let me just tell you when you said I can be whoever you want to be, I'm like, Sir, we have to publish this
Cassie: Yeah.
Fallen Scynclair: It's no mm mm mm
Cassie: Yeah.
Fallen Scynclair: mm mm Yeah, no it's okay, okay, ready, ready, ready. I'm I'm I'm gonna resay that, but you know, it's
Lori: Try again. You're good, you're good.
Fallen Scynclair: so yeah. yeah, so I'm whoever you want me to be, you know. that's the fantasy of it. I think from a listener's point of view, they're gonna listen to it and they're gonna picture someone in their head, right? And for me personally, I in my opinion, it's like when they see your face or they see they put an image to you, that that fantasy's over, you know what I mean? And you know, everyone has a type, right? so But yeah, I would I would say Yeah that would God. Cut line
Lori: You're not bad at it. You're you're doing just fine. See, the thing about our podcast is we try to also have fun. So when we
Fallen Scynclair: Yeah, yeah.
Lori: have all of these mess ups, it's like it's totally okay. Listen, we had an hour long session plan with Lucy Smoke the other day, and that
Fallen Scynclair: Mm-hmm.
Lori: heifer took three hours almost because she was so
Cassie: Yeah.
Lori: funny. And we were just laughing and I'm like, okay, we went way over, but I don't even
Fallen Scynclair: Yeah, yeah.
Lori: care. So it's meant to be fun. Don't stress one bit.
Fallen Scynclair: Mm-hmm, mm-hmm, mm-hmm. Yeah, for sure. but yeah, what was the question again?
Cassie: Yeah.
Lori: well I think you answered it. I think you answered it. yeah.
Fallen Scynclair: Yeah, yeah, okay, okay, okay, okay. Okay.
Cassie: Yeah, you did.
Lori: So Cassie, I'm gonna skip that. or do you feel like you wanna say that next kind of thing? Okay.
Cassie: Nope, go ahead. I think we got it covered.
Lori: Yeah. Exactly. So now we've established the mystery, but who is fallen when you're not behind the mic?
Fallen Scynclair: you know, I'm I'm just a guy, you know, funny sometimes. I I do like, you know, just chilling out, being a couch potato. I like playing games, going out just on the boat sometimes. I I like I'm a little bit of both. I like being a little lazy and then being outgoing too, you know. So
Lori: Okay, you said gaming. So is that like do you like physical games or are you like an online gamer? Like what do you like to do?
Fallen Scynclair: I definitely like online games for sure.
Lori: Okay.
Fallen Scynclair: yeah, before I even got into like narration and stuff like that, I was a like gaming content creator for a few years beforehand. So
Lori: Okay.
Fallen Scynclair: yeah, that was one of my things. Obviously, I'm gonna keep that private because that's separate from what I do now. but yeah, I I do like gaming a lot.
Cassie: So then take us back to how you actually got started narrating. How did that come about?
Fallen Scynclair: Yeah, so like I said, I've been streaming for years, always had that content creator background. and then I would say two, three years ago, I was streaming and people were commenting on my voice and blah blah blah blah. And I wasn't really fond of my voice, and I think nobody really is like fond of their own voices, right? And And yeah, so I just kind of started getting a little spicy, you know, taking requests like, can you say this? Can you say that, you know? but for me, it was a little tough 'cause when you're starting out with gaming, right, you're going to bring a lot of the younger generation into your content, right? Kids love games and stuff like that. I didn't want to do a content switch like that on them, like just full adult stuff now, you know what I mean? So I was like, all right,
Lori: Mm-hmm.
Fallen Scynclair: mm, I think that's my responsibility to separate that. And so I made another account. And Yeah, I was just I started out just doing little snippets and stuff like that, being like a spicy voice actor, whatever, you know. and I started making Patreon audios and a lot of stuff a lot of Lot spicy stuff like that. And yeah, and authors started reaching out to me. They're like, Hey, you know, I love your voice. what do you want to do? Some audiobooks. I'm like, I I I kind of backed away from that for a bit. Cause at first I'm like, I don't know if I'm ready to take on that type of responsibility, you know.
Lori: Mm.
Fallen Scynclair: so I started doing pro promotional narration. So they'll reach out to me, be like, Hey, can you promote this book, say a few lines and blah, blah, blah. That's how I kind of got started with that. and then I had Nicole Martinez reach out to me. we did the book Veils of Deception. It came out this year, but the planning was way back. and she reached out, she wanted me to do a book. and yeah, I I felt comfortable enough to do that. And but yeah, that's kinda how I got here.
Lori: So it all started with spicy requests.
Fallen Scynclair: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Mm-hmm. Yeah.
Lori: Well, before that were I know you said you were a gamer, but were you a reader?
Fallen Scynclair: No, not at all. I
Lori: Okay.
Fallen Scynclair: definitely not a reader. I I'm more of like a visual person, so I love movies and TV shows and stuff like that. but I also have like
Lori: Okay.
Fallen Scynclair: a vivid imagination. So
Lori: Okay.
Fallen Scynclair: you know, I I always kind of saw reading as like a chore for me growing up, you know? but now I've I've c become a little more fond of it, right? but yeah, being like a having a vivid imagination, reading these books or narrating it, like I can like picture that in my head and I'm starting to like enjoy it more than I did when I was younger.
Lori: Hm.
Cassie: Where are you telling me to skip to? I'm sorry.
Lori: to segment two. 'Cause the
Cassie: Okay, well I lost my notes in in the middle of that, so I was trying to get it back up and you're telling me to skip and
Fallen Scynclair: Ha ha.
Cassie: don't know where I'm skipping to. Sorry, let me let me try to get it back under control. I hate this stupid thing.
Lori: Your notes do fun things when you're on the call.
Cassie: Okay. So the I think most listeners is that that's where we are? Okay. So I think most listeners, us included, don't realize how much labor actually goes into somebody making an audiobook with the raw manuscripts and everything like that. So walk us through it. When a new book hits your inbox, what is your step one?
Fallen Scynclair: Usually I ask for, you know, what's the word count, right? What's everything that has to do with the book? Trigger warnings. I wanna make sure that it's like something I'm gonna like want to do, right? and then when I finally, you know, get the book and they they send me the manuscript. I usually just look over the manuscript, check the character guides if they have one. I usually make character profiles. I'll also have like my PA. I'll have her skim through the book too, because a lot of times I don't have that time, you know, to look over the book before I even read it because usually I'm working on multiple projects at the same time. so she'll just give me like a TLDR. I'm like, okay, awesome. And so yeah, that's kinda like my first steps, you know.
Lori: So now I know that I could have a job as a narrator's reader. Like that would be the best job ever. 'Cause I could just read the book
Fallen Scynclair: Right, right, right.
Cassie: Yeah.
Lori: and tell you what happens.
Cassie: You're right.
Fallen Scynclair: Yeah, yeah, yeah, for sure.
Lori: Ha ha
Cassie: So when your PA fills you in, do you already have a voice built in your head before you ever like say it out loud when you start recording?
Fallen Scynclair: I I would say I do. when I skim o skim over like the auditions, right, before they even, you know, get to that stage, I get a sense of like the main characters like mannerisms and vibe and but I also I'm too much of a perfectionist, so I'll constantly, you know, redo the voices over and over until I feel like, okay, that that sounds right to me. But a lot of times, you know the author has notes on what they want the the character to sound like. so I'll try to match that to the best of my abilities. And but yeah, the voice I use in like the audition is what I'll use on the project for sure.
Lori: So when you have a voice that you're doing, is there ever a time when you're like, Okay, this voice is not working? And you kind of have to like start over?
Fallen Scynclair: yeah, I I so I've had this instance with Whispers of the Crimson Sun by J. F. Hilly. Romanticy. And the main there's two male characters. one is named Cole Brender, Thousand Year Old Viking, blah blah blah blah. when I first started with his voice, I was like, Okay, it was okay. It was just like a deep broody, but I was like I feel like I need to kind of put an accent on this. And which the author agreed with me, you know, and we kind of went for a kind of like the Witcher, like Henry Cavill's the Witcher accent, you know.
Lori: love that.
Fallen Scynclair: so that was that that was a time where I was like, yeah, I have to switch this up. but yeah, like I said, I'm too much of a perfectionist, so I'll just keep trying to redo, redo, redo. Even if the author's like, that's perfect, I'm like, I could do better. So
Lori: I feel the perfectionism. It's not an easy thing to work with.
Fallen Scynclair: Mm-hmm. Yeah, for sure, for sure.
Cassie: I don't know what you're asking
Lori: Cassie.
Cassie: me to do.
Lori: So you wanted me to skip my my part, right?
Cassie: The n no, I'm s I was telling you he answered my question, so skip to your next question. He answered he answered what his research was.
Lori: Yeah, no, he kinda yeah, he kinda answered that one mine too. That's why I said that's why I was saying go
Cassie: Yeah. okay. So
Lori: ahead, yeah.
Cassie: Okay, sorry.
Fallen Scynclair: I mean we can still do that one if we want, you know, I can kinda change it out.
Lori: no no no. So this is the this is the fun of this is that we have a general script so that we know things that we wanna
Fallen Scynclair: Mm-hmm.
Lori: hit, but then sometimes the authors or narrators already answer it and then we're like, Hey, we'll just skip that. So it's all good. Don't worry about it.
Fallen Scynclair: Right. Okay. Okay, awesome.
Lori: So right above segment three was is Euroline.
Cassie: I'm I'm scrolling. Okay, so
Lori: I'm just sipping my coffee. Sorry.
Cassie: What's actually harder for you making sure every side co what the fuck is going on? I'm gonna I'm gonna go. I'm sorry.
Fallen Scynclair: It's okay.
Cassie: What's actually harder for you making sure every side character sounds distinct or keeping the main character's voice consistent over the entire recording?
Fallen Scynclair: a little bit of both. You know, I think that depends on the length of the book as well. But as most narrators do, we make the character profile so that way we can kinda keep recalling that voice that we we made for the characters. but definitely I would say probably keeping them consistent throughout the story. Spa like there's know shorter books you're like, Okay, this is good, but you know, Just like Whispers of the Crimson Sun. I I I'm not really good with accents, you know, because I I get a little self conscious. I'm like, okay, wait, I I don't want people to get angry because I, you know, set an accent wrong or, you know, said it. Did it? Did an accent wrong. And so yeah, so yeah, just keeping consistency is definitely definitely a tough one.
Cassie: Yeah, 'cause Chantel's book was what, like thirty six hours or something. It was long.
Fallen Scynclair: Yeah. yeah, thirty-one hours. most I did my final hours for the I think it was nineteen hours, I believe. of recording time and yeah, that was a that was something. That definitely put my pushed my vocals to to the max for sure.
Lori: So Cassie is a huge Chantel fan and got me in that rabbit hole. But that's one of the ones we love that you've done. I mean, all the ones you've done, but that's one of our favorites.
Fallen Scynclair: yeah, for sure, for sure. I mean did you you so you guys really liked it? my god? Yeah.
Cassie: Yeah.
Lori: Mm-hmm. You did good.
Fallen Scynclair: Yeah, no. I I was oof, I was stressing that whole project. That whole project.
Cassie: Yeah, where
Lori: Well that was a lot.
Cassie: we are where we are, audiobooks don't come out until three AM. I stayed up till three AM, started it, and then eventually passed out because I was so exhausted. But I I made
Fallen Scynclair: Mm-hmm.
Cassie: it a couple of chapters in, so I was ready for it.
Fallen Scynclair: That's awesome.
Lori: Ha ha ha.
Fallen Scynclair: Yeah, no, it's it's definitely a long one for sure. but yeah, no, I I definitely it was I think almost almost three months of working on that, I would say.
Lori: wow.
Fallen Scynclair: Yeah, it was it was me like so I got sick in the middle of it. I'm sure you guys saw her thing and I was the that was the one. I'm sorry guys.
Cassie: Yeah.
Fallen Scynclair: worst possible thing that could have happened. But yeah, just just stressing about it was that was another thing on me for sure. And then going on TikTok and everybody's like, Where's the book? Where is it?
Lori: Ha ha
Cassie: Yeah.
Fallen Scynclair: I'm just like, so yeah, yeah. Please, please hang in there.
Lori: Be patient
Cassie: Do you ever find yourself getting a little too attached to characters when you're recording them?
Fallen Scynclair: yeah, I would say let me see You one second. There's a go a rollout drug. Okay, sorry. I I I do have a booth, but since I live on like a main where where my booth is is like on a main road, it's so loud trucks all the time.
Lori: Hm. We didn't hear a thing, so it's a good booth.
Cassie: Yeah.
Fallen Scynclair: so I do genuinely get like emotional for what a character goes through for sure. like I said, I have a vivid imagination and just putting myself in that character's shoes, it helps me kind of like perform and act to the best of my abilities, you know. But yeah, there are a few characters where I was just like, I love him. I love him so much. I love the way he acts. you know, Cashton was one of Cole Brander was another. Jasper from The Midnight Order, which is a reverse harem vampire dark romance. So it that's a it's a lovely one. so yeah, there's a there's a few of them that I really just like get attached to because of how they act and how they kinda go about their business. but yeah, yeah.
Cassie: Do you think that you also like have these characters that are going through these really big trials like, you know, what Cashton and Eve did? Do you find
Fallen Scynclair: Mm-hmm.
Cassie: yourself becoming like I don't wanna say like s attached to the your co narrator, but kind of like to the situation that you're reading?
Fallen Scynclair: I mean esp like if we're using those two as an example, you know, she d she went through a lot and like I think anybody would say that like your heart almost ached, you know, just for what she went through. Like that's it was just terrible. And even listening back, right? I I listened a little bit of a few chapters as I could, listening to Madison, she's amazing. I think she really
Cassie: Yeah.
Fallen Scynclair: embodied that character, you know. and just her portraying someone being isolated from everybody, you know, her her dad freaking or yeah, yeah. Crazy stuff. So
Cassie: Yeah.
Fallen Scynclair: For sure. For sure. I almost felt almost like protective of her. I'm like, my God, we got
Lori: Mm-hmm.
Fallen Scynclair: So
Cassie: Yeah. It was heartbreaking. Go ahead, I don't know where we are. I was just responding 'cause I panicked.
Lori: Okay, no. What is it like no, you're good. what is it like listening to your voice? You said you listen to a little bit of that one. because you're a perfectionist, like when you listen to that
Fallen Scynclair: Mm-hmm.
Lori: are you thinking of all the flaws or are you able to kind of just enjoy what the art you created?
Fallen Scynclair: I'm definitely criticizing myself. I'm like, ooh, I wish I delivered that line better. I wish this sounded better, you know. I'm always trying to find ways to like kind of just how should I put it? I'm always trying to find ways to get better. And like I look at something, I'm like, I could do that better, I could do this, I could deliver that better. But there are times I think chaotics was one chaotic was one of the times that I felt like it was it was definitely like rewarding and I felt accomplished like 'cause I'm like, I think it sounded good. I think I sounded, you know, obviously a few chapters I was like, But
Lori: Ha ha ha.
Fallen Scynclair: yeah. Yeah, no, for sure.
Lori: Well, you did great. At least in our opinion.
Fallen Scynclair: Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. I appreciate
Cassie: You did. Yeah.
Fallen Scynclair: it. I appreciate it.
Lori: So Fallen, you're stepping into these worlds that somebody pours their heart into. What is it like being trusted with that baby? Like is the weight so heavy? Yeah.
Fallen Scynclair: it's terrifying. It's terrifying. Cause, you know, you you already went through like the audition phase and which is already nerve-wracking in itself, right? Because you're always waiting for like, you know, are they gonna reach back out to me? Blah, blah, blah, blah. But but yeah, you have the responsibility to bring that character to life. And the scary part is you don't actually know if people are gonna like it until it's out. And you know, I don't wanna disappoint. Like the fandom, right? If the character is already established. and I'm already like an anxious person as is, so especially when it comes to people hearing my work and hearing me perform. so yeah it it's terrifying. my goodness.
Lori: That's what I would be thinking. I I don't know, 'cause I have anxiety too. I don't know if I could do it. Like it just seems like it would be such a heavy burden. you know, you're you've got this thing and the author has a picture of what he and she is gonna look like and you've gotta try to somehow mold into that. Like that that has to be so hard.
Fallen Scynclair: Yeah, for sure. And it's like I mean, I I started voice work obviously two, three years ago, but I started narration a year ago. And by the time when
Lori: Okay.
Fallen Scynclair: I got reached out for this project, it was was back in January. So I only had maybe three or four books under my belt and kind of scratching my head, I'm like, Are you sure this is the right you know, this is real? Like I'm like
Cassie: Mm-hmm.
Fallen Scynclair: I
Lori: Ha ha ha
Fallen Scynclair: I'm I'm I'm kinda new here. You sure you wanna trust me with this? And So yeah, like it's I'm still new, but you're in the that spot of where this could make or break in my career, I feel like. In my opinion, I feel it could,
Lori: Mm.
Fallen Scynclair: you know, this with this book and how big the fandom is and, you know, how book talk is in general. So it was that was definitely scary for me. So and I think that's why like I stressed myself out that I got sick. I I you know, I I think I I've think I've been sick on almost every project too though. I stress myself out so much and I get sick and I'm just like, my God, okay, okay, just lock in, we can do it. but yeah, no, that's definitely it's it's a scary thing.
Lori: Yeah. I mean that anxious sick is no joke. Like you can get
Fallen Scynclair: Mm-hmm.
Cassie: Yeah.
Lori: so stressed and so, you know, overwhelmed that you really do make yourself sick.
Fallen Scynclair: Yeah, yeah. yeah, no. And then when it was finally done and she Shanto, she reached out to me after everything was released. I was like, I'm so nervous. She's like, You did amazing. You're you're great. I'm like, okay. That like that sense of relief,
Lori: Ha ha
Fallen Scynclair: I was like, Okay. I could breathe as long as like she liked it, you know, I feel like that was enough for me to just be like, Okay,
Cassie: Right.
Lori: Yeah.
Fallen Scynclair: I can relax a little bit. I don't wanna like speak on any other private conversations that but people have reached out to me and just like you did great and blah blah blah blah, like you have nothing to be worried about. I'm like, Okay, okay. so yeah.
Lori: I mean, if the Queen Chantel tells you that you did good, you're safe.
Fallen Scynclair: Yeah, yeah. yeah, for sure.
Cassie: Have you ever had a moment when you've been recording and you pull out your script and you just stop and think, Okay, the author's really gonna make me say this today?
Fallen Scynclair: Mm. yeah, I I've had moments I don't know if I can think of any I I just know there was a lot of times in chaotic, for sure. You know, it's but not even just playing cashing. I mean, there's fifty plus side characters just on my side alone. And there was a lot of, you know, excuse my friends, shitty people in there and seeing
Cassie: Yeah.
Fallen Scynclair: a lot of the stuff they were saying, it was I was like, Okay, okay, you know. so yeah, that's definitely happened for sure.
Cassie: Yeah, the trauma
Lori: So
Cassie: in that book is outrageous. Sorry. I we were
Lori: Mm mm, no, you're good.
Cassie: doing so good too.
Fallen Scynclair: Yeah.
Lori: Hey, we're still doing good. Look at where we started. Like every conversation
Cassie: I know. I know.
Lori: we were talking over each other.
Cassie: Okay. Well you go ahead, 'cause that was just panic me anyways, 'cause nobody was saying anything and I didn't know if I was lost again.
Fallen Scynclair: You guys got this. It's it's great. You guys are doing great.
Cassie: Thank you for being so understanding.
Lori: It always comes together.
Fallen Scynclair: No.
Cassie: It does.
Lori: So I am the so even though we both have anxiety, me and Cassie, I am the like, it's all gonna work out. And Cassie's like, it's not and I'm like, just don't
Fallen Scynclair: It's like
Cassie: Mm-hmm.
Lori: worry about it. It always comes together. I mean it comes together 'cause she stresses and she makes the editing.
Cassie: Y 'cause I because I edit. That's why.
Fallen Scynclair: Yeah, yeah.
Lori: I know and on my side I'm like, 'Cause totally fun.
Cassie: I bet it is sitting there.
Fallen Scynclair: Yeah, I'm like this with a few of my friends too. Like I had a friend who
Lori: Mm-hmm.
Fallen Scynclair: they were kind of this they were there. I was always venting about the book too, because I was like, my god, there's every chapter's mine. Every chapter is mine.
Cassie: Yeah.
Fallen Scynclair: out of n 90 plus two epilogues, both of them were mine too. And so I was just like, I I don't know if I can do this. Like, like that was like it definitely this book tested everything. My patience, like Especially being a perfectionist too, like I redoing a line over and over because I'm like, I don't know if that sounds good. Like I was losing my mind and they were like, dude, it's gonna be great. It's gonna be great. You're gonna be okay. You just just do what you need to do. Don't worry about, you know, mouth clicks, which I've been worrying about this whole this whole my mouth was clicking
Cassie: Yeah.
Fallen Scynclair: a lot.
Lori: Ha ha.
Fallen Scynclair: so and I remember another person telling me, just like, you know, trust the engineer, they got your back. actually Brendan Francis told me that. No, he's a great narrator if you guys don't know. But but he he was telling me that just I'm the same way, but you just gotta trust the narrator has your back. And you know, if there's any mess ups it'll be in the pickups, you know. So
Lori: Yeah. C good friendships have two sides. Too much needed sides.
Fallen Scynclair: for sure, for sure.
Cassie: Okay. So we've talked about character prep mindset and author relationships. So that leads us to the elephant in the room, which is Spice. So I wrong. I'm so sorry.
Lori: Do you want me to go?
Cassie: I think you need to just do this whole
Lori: Yeah.
Cassie: interview. I'm sorry. Okay.
Fallen Scynclair: You're doing fine. You guys
Lori: I got you, boo, I got you.
Fallen Scynclair: are doing great. It's okay. We got this.
Cassie: Jeez. Okay. So we
Lori: Okay.
Cassie: you want me to start over because or do you want I can cut
Lori: Yeah, go ahead.
Cassie: I can cut that probably. I could probably cut that. Just just go ahead. Just go ahead. Sure.
Lori: Just whatever you're comfortable with, you sure? Okay. Okay. So Fallen, is narrating a heavy spice scene totally awkward the first time? Or do you just like instantly lock in and treat it like any other day?
Fallen Scynclair: I would say it wasn't awkward in the sense of just doing it because like I said, my start was spicy stuff. So it was just that was kind of just normal for me. But what was difficult for my first time, right? my first book was full book was Crave by AK Rose, and it was dual narration where I'm playing both. female and male in the and I'm just making love to myself in and I just felt my for my first book to play multiple characters and FM voices, I'm just like I felt awkward. So yeah,
Cassie: I bet.
Fallen Scynclair: yeah, yeah.
Lori: I mean one would. I don't know how you'd get around that.
Cassie: Yeah.
Fallen Scynclair: Yeah, you know, just you know yeah, yeah. Fall and Ifa, they call me.
Cassie: I think
Fallen Scynclair: So
Cassie: I I wouldn't be able to keep a straight face during it. I I don't know.
Fallen Scynclair: Yeah, I mean the book is great. I just duel is just not my favorite, you know.
Cassie: Yeah.
Fallen Scynclair: yeah, I I'm not gonna demonstrate FM voice so you guys can move on to
Lori: Well, I mean, my it's not my favorite to hear. I like a distinct male
Cassie: Yeah.
Lori: and a distinct female
Fallen Scynclair: Right, right.
Lori: voice. It it actually is one of those things that like when I hear that, because it's like no matter how great you are, it's difficult to be another gender. you know, just to voice
Fallen Scynclair: Right, no, and it's just it
Lori: those emotions and all of that.
Fallen Scynclair: Yeah, you wanna be like immersed in the story too. And I feel like for me personally, I just like I feel like it takes you out of it a little bit, you know. Especially during scenes that are intimate, right? And, you
Lori: Mm-hmm.
Fallen Scynclair: know, you kinda wanna be into that and then you hear it, you know, the guy yes. Yeah, you know, so it's
Lori: Ha ha
Fallen Scynclair: yeah, yeah. But I I also get it. It's it's sometimes it's it is cheaper, you know. and, you know, there's benefits of it too. But there are like Some really great narrators that can really pull it off. one of my good friends, Audemer, she has a great masculine voice. And it was just like I'm like, whoa, okay. All right, I got it. Yes, sir, not gone.
Cassie: Yeah.
Fallen Scynclair: Yeah, so
Lori: to listen to her ga voice.
Fallen Scynclair: yeah, I I forgot which book she does it in, but yeah, definitely send you guys links for sure.
Lori: Yeah, that'd be great.
Cassie: So what do you think is actually trickier, delivering explicit words without stumbling or making the emotion behind it sound authentic?
Fallen Scynclair: I think the words themselves, because I feel like that also goes like hand in hand with making a scene sound emotionally believable. You know, some
Lori: Mm.
Fallen Scynclair: words flow and or and or sound more natural to me than others. you know, there are scenes where you're just you're trying to make it believable and then he or she says something that's like I probably wouldn't say that in that situation, you know?
Cassie: Yeah.
Fallen Scynclair: And not to knock on any authors. It's w d it's just you know, f me personally, right? in my opinion, I'm just like, it might take me out of it, you know. but yeah, I would say the words themselves is definitely a little bit more difficult because it plays into the fact of, you know, emotion making it emotionally believable.
Lori: Yeah. I mean I would I would agree with that if I'm as a listener, if if
Fallen Scynclair: Mm-hmm.
Lori: the words feel very Manufactured. You know, like if they're if you're just
Fallen Scynclair: Right.
Lori: reading, it it doesn't it's not great in an audiobook. So I love that where you
Fallen Scynclair: Mm-hmm, mm-hmm.
Lori: you know, those words, even though they may be harder, you're trying to get behind the emotions of even those words.
Fallen Scynclair: For sure, for sure. I mean, like, there are times where where you get sent sent back pickups and like I'm like, at the time I'm like, I delivered this scene so great, the emotion was good, and I left out a word or I said a word wrong. And I'm like, I have to try to redo it months or like a month later when you get these pickups back. I'm like, I can't, I gotta try to like get myself back into the scene just to do that one sentence, you know. And sometimes in bugs, those one sentences can, you know. Make or break a book, I feel like sometimes. Sometimes, okay.
Cassie: Yeah.
Fallen Scynclair: Not all the time. yeah.
Lori: So have you ever finished recording an intense spice scene and turned off the mic and thought, I am so glad that nobody lives with me or nobody is near me
Fallen Scynclair: yeah, no. For the first few months of my narration, I was doing it in my household, family members and all. And I had a little c yeah, so Yeah. Let me Mike I made a little booth in my closet, but on the other side was a family members' room. So a lot of these scenes, like you gotta get loud. You gotta, you know. Ugh So yeah, it's
Lori: Like sorry, Mom
Fallen Scynclair: yeah. So sometimes I would have to wait till people are sleeping or, you know, you know, make sure they're out to record. there was a scene in the midnight order where I I I get flogged and I have to just play the part of just like I
Cassie: Hmm.
Fallen Scynclair: gotta wait,
Cassie: Yeah.
Fallen Scynclair: so I yeah, no, I don't I have a feeling they might have heard me. I just don't wanna know if they did or not. I don't wanna know. It
Lori: It's just a fog scene.
Fallen Scynclair: was just
Cassie: Yeah.
Fallen Scynclair: I'm not actually getting hit. You're fine.
Cassie: Yeah.
Lori: Everything's okay. What is something about narrating spice that you think listeners would not understand?
Fallen Scynclair: okay, so I would say that this is fantasy, fiction, and I'm not actually your book boyfriend, you know? But which goes back to, you know, separating fantasy from reality, right? but in the sense of actually recording these scenes, it's it's a lot of breathing and sometimes you get lighthead doing these scenes.
Lori: Hmm.
Fallen Scynclair: So, yeah. That's another tough one.
Cassie: think that's really important to touch on too, especially after the incident that they had at centers and stardust last year, is that, you know, this is a character and, you know, with what happened to the the cosplayer, I think that is something important that needs to be said more often is that, you know, this is fiction and there are lines that you don't cross with people. So I mean with you s even staying anonymous, I understand because of seeing what happened. So I I'm glad that you brought that up because it is important to remember that this this is fantasy, you know, people don't really do the things in these books that I know
Fallen Scynclair: Mm-hmm, mm-hmm.
Cassie: of. I don't I don't wanna know, but you know, I'm I'm glad that you brought that up.
Fallen Scynclair: yeah, for sure. No, that we've def I've definitely experienced a lot of that. especially in this spicy scene coming up into narration. defin you get a lot of that for sure. so it's very important to set those boundaries and make it very clear that like listen, this is this is a fantasy, you know. but even like I said, like voice work back then it was falling under the line of, you know, SW work, right? And 'Cause people paid for services, right? so my God. Rewind.
Lori: Join the club.
Cassie: Okay. Yeah.
Fallen Scynclair: So yeah, you kind of have to like just set those boundaries and just like listen, this is a fantasy, you know. As I said earlier, I'll be whoever you want me to be. But at the end of the day, this is not real. This is, you know. So yeah, you have to that's a tough thing in this community, I feel like.
Cassie: Yeah, it is. Okay, is it me? Okay, where am I?
Lori: You're up, Cassie. Yeah. we're right before segment six.
Cassie: Okay.
Lori: You're yeah.
Cassie: Okay. So we've talked enough about the science of spice. I think it's time we actually hear no, is that cut? Did we cut that? okay.
Lori: No, no, no, no. We're good 'cause we're we just changed it, yeah.
Cassie: So, okay. So we've talked enough about the science of spice. I think it's actually time that we hear the voice in action. Right? Is that what I'm saying? Okay. Okay. Sorry.
Lori: So Fallen Mm-hmm. Yeah. Nosaka. So Fallen, do you have a favorite line or a quote from something that you narrated that you would love delivering for us? Doesn't need to be anything
Fallen Scynclair: Yeah, for sure.
Lori: inappropriate or if if you're not comfortable, but just something that you loved.
Fallen Scynclair: Yeah, yeah. I mean, mm there are a few. So there's one from The Midnight Order, you know. I think this one's more of like a wholesome thing. let me try to get into character, but it's Yeah, no, it's
Lori: We're putting you on the spot.
Fallen Scynclair: okay. I could lie right here for Rewind This is
Lori: Ha ha ha
Fallen Scynclair: exactly how I am. Never I hate Well, one of the things I'm have trouble with is Like performance anxiety. Like I can improv and do spicy scenes for hours and on a live and in front of people, but I c if I try to read in front of people, that's another big
Lori: Mm.
Fallen Scynclair: reason why like I was never a good like wanted to read, 'cause you know, English teacher
Lori: Yeah.
Fallen Scynclair: telling you to stand up in front of class, read I hated that. okay, so anyways, I mean ranting.
Lori: Mm-hmm.
Fallen Scynclair: okay, here we go. Let me try and log in. so I could lie right here with her for an eternity. both of us petrified and worthless, and I'd be so fucking happy. That that line stuck with me for a little bit.
Lori: That's great.
Cassie: That's awesome.
Fallen Scynclair: yeah, so the Midnight Order by KM Mixon. That's from her book. and then there's a spicy. There's a book full of spicy poetry. Here we I'm trying to wind it up good. My friend always hates I'm like, it's a spicy, it's a poetry book. And they get so angry at me.
Lori: It's poetry, man.
Fallen Scynclair: so Beneath My Teeth by Noah Rook. A collection of spicy poetry. there's a slew of other voice actors and narrators that are on it. I do three different poems, poems, and one's called Desk, Window, and Commandments. And this one is from Desk. A little short, a little spicy. Okay, ready?
Cassie: Yeah.
Fallen Scynclair: remember this desk tomorrow. Remember how I felt when I broke you across it. That's a that was a little fun one. Anyways.
Cassie: Okay.
Lori: That was that was nice.
Fallen Scynclair: Yeah, yeah, no, that's a that's a fun one for sure.
Lori: I'm getting a little hot. It's real hot here.
Fallen Scynclair: Mm. Make up, make up. Mm-hmm.
Lori: Some powder. Okay. Cassie you should talk now.
Cassie: Okay, okay.
Fallen Scynclair: Tag in.
Cassie: Yeah.
Lori: I'm gonna need a minute.
Cassie: Okay, so we're gonna move into some rapid fire questions. No overthinking, just go with your gut. Okay, are you ready?
Fallen Scynclair: Yeah.
Cassie: Okay, first person or third person?
Fallen Scynclair: First person.
Cassie: Dull narration or doing a Yep. Dual narration or duet narration?
Fallen Scynclair: duet
Lori: Brooding hero or charming villain?
Fallen Scynclair: charming villain.
Lori: Okay, sweet heroine or Morley Grey heroine.
Fallen Scynclair: mmm Morally Gray.
Cassie: British accent or southern draw?
Fallen Scynclair: British.
Cassie: Enim enemies to lovers or forbidden romance?
Fallen Scynclair: Enemies to lovers for sure.
Lori: Slow burn or instant obsession?
Fallen Scynclair: Hmm, slow burn. I love a good build up.
Lori: Yeah. Character you'd love to voice someday.
Fallen Scynclair: Would probably do maybe like a like a deranged psychopath, like
Lori: You definitely should.
Cassie: Be great.
Fallen Scynclair: yeah, there is a book coming out that I I will be doing a little bit of that, I feel like. So it's called
Lori: I'm excited.
Fallen Scynclair: Bleeding Hearts by Killer. And yeah, that one's a a a slasher for sure. And
Cassie: Ooh.
Lori: Mm.
Fallen Scynclair: yeah yeah, I think it's gonna be a fun one.
Lori: I love that. I feel like you have a good voice for a psychopath. Like they have to have a certain type of you know No, never I would never fallen.
Cassie: Yeah.
Fallen Scynclair: You call me crazy? Not gonna get How dare you!
Cassie: You have to have a certain amount of gravel in your voice, I think, to do that.
Lori: Yeah.
Cassie: So
Lori: That's what I'm saying. Thank you, Cassie.
Fallen Scynclair: Yeah. S sometimes yeah, I sometimes
Cassie: You're welcome.
Fallen Scynclair: I like to portray mine very like very clinical and sometimes I can go like a little high pitch for that. almost like I did for Evan, creepy guy, you know. you know, you're such a pretty dolly. Like I made
Cassie: Ha ha.
Fallen Scynclair: myself I'd made myself crawl doing that voice. I my god, like I was like, I I hate it, but I think it's gonna work. Just to capture how
Lori: That's
Fallen Scynclair: creepy he is, and yeah.
Lori: That sounded great.
Cassie: Okay, so what do you think
Fallen Scynclair: Natik.
Cassie: was your most difficult voice to pull off?
Fallen Scynclair: Mmm. Probably my Teddy Hamilton voice to try to play Saint. Yeah. I was born into a secret society. I was
Cassie: Yeah.
Fallen Scynclair: I I
Lori: Hey, that's pretty good.
Fallen Scynclair: They say we were the lucky ones. so I I I try to with with chaotic, I try to like Go back and see what they sounded like and try to mimic them. So that way I like I like to like just have you know so you can be able to dif differentiate. my god, I can't talk. And I'm the narrator. Crazy. let's see.
Cassie: Yeah.
Fallen Scynclair: I just wanted the listener to be able to tell the difference between voices. so yeah. Anyways.
Cassie: I think you did good with it.
Lori: So So your voice that you're speaking with us right now, is that your natural voice and cadence or has that changed since you've started narrating?
Fallen Scynclair: I would say my voice has gotten deeper, which is kind of weird. Like the last two years it was not this deep. I I will say. It's almost I'm
Lori: Okay.
Fallen Scynclair: like a second puberty now, but but like I guess for just doing a lot of the spices and having to like stay in this low register, it just like it just kind of settles like this now. I could definitely I do have some range, But talking like this is just my just natural for me right now.
Lori: Okay. Okay, so we ask every guest on our show, What are you obsessed with after dark? And it can be a book, a show, you know, a late night snack, a drink, anything, but what are you obsessed with right now?
Fallen Scynclair: hunting down sprites on Fortnite. Let me tell you, that has been that has been my
Cassie: Mm-hmm.
Fallen Scynclair: addiction ever since. I Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I was
Lori: They are so cute. The little sprites. The little ones. Yeah, they're so cute.
Fallen Scynclair: I was I finally had like a week off and I was like, I'm gonna get them all. And I did. I I hunted every last sprite down on Fortnite to keep and into my collection. And But other than that, I'm just I'm actually currently watching Reacher. It's don't know if you guys
Lori: Love Reacher.
Fallen Scynclair: Yeah. I love that show. and just you know, stuffing my face with like baked Cheetos and you know, it's fine.
Lori: Mm.
Fallen Scynclair: Just doing regular stuff, I guess.
Lori: My my youngest daughter right now on Fortnite, she is obsessed with the Spider Man swing. Like, you know, where she's swinging all around. So she's like, Mom, watch. And
Fallen Scynclair: I was I was doing that. Mm-hmm.
Lori: I'm like, Does it keep you from getting attacked? She's like, Yeah, it does. I'm like, Okay.
Fallen Scynclair: Yeah, yeah, no, I I they I think they just dropped a new update, so they got rid of and I was so bummed out. So bummed out.
Lori: Mm. Real quick, Cassie, I was gonna add this. Since you said Reacher, I seen a video the other day of him with I cannot remember the guy's name, but he is a singer and he had Reacher on there singing with him. I never knew Reacher could sing.
Fallen Scynclair: Mm-hmm. I I think I seen I didn't yeah, he was on American Idol. He has a great voice. He has such a great voice. I didn't see him actually sing, but I know that he did that. I seen a couple posts about it. It was that that was really cool.
Lori: It was amazing.
Fallen Scynclair: Yeah, I I yeah, sometimes I I call him Daddy, sometimes.
Lori: Ha ha ha
Fallen Scynclair: but any I'll save that for longer.
Lori: I mean, he's amazing on that show though, which is funny 'cause his personality is nothing like that from what you see. Yeah.
Fallen Scynclair: he yeah. yeah, for sure, for sure.
Lori: It's so fun. Sorry, Cassie, you can move on. I got excited
Cassie: Yeah.
Lori: talking about Reacher for a second.
Cassie: Before we wrap up this episode, can you let listeners know where all they can find your audiobooks at?
Fallen Scynclair: Yeah, yeah. so most of them are on Audible under Fallen Sinclair. make sure you spell it correctly, or the way I spell it, I guess. It's Fallen S C Y N C L A I R. it's not f Fallon Skinclair. it's not I trust me, th I've heard all types of names. and I'm not those ones.
Cassie: Yeah.
Fallen Scynclair: But yeah, Fallen Sinclair. Crave is on a different website. I couldn't tell you off the top of my head. And you'll have to go, you know, digging down a rabbit hole to find that one. but yeah. And the yeah the beneath my teeth one, the poem the poem book, poetry book. that's under Fallen Sinclair is spelled the correct or the wrong but correct way. They spelt it wrong, so it's under that one. and it's also on Spotify. So you can find stuff like that too.
Lori: I definitely want to listen to that.
Fallen Scynclair: Mm-hmm, mm-hmm, mm-hmm.
Cassie: And then you're on all social media
Lori: Okay, so
Cassie: platforms, right? I
Fallen Scynclair: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Cassie: sorry, I messed I messed it up, so I didn't mean to make them two separate
Lori: It you go ahead. No, no, no, go ahead, just reset. You're good.
Cassie: things. And then you're on all social media platforms, right?
Fallen Scynclair: Yes, I am. so everything is under Fallen Psy, S C Y, Fallen Psy. I do on TikTok I do have two separate ones. one for spicy stuff and one for narration.
Lori: Mm.
Fallen Scynclair: fallen psy is the spicy page, and then fallen.sinclair is my narration page. And in both of those accounts, I do have a link in bio to that links to everything I've ever been a part of. So yeah.
Lori: And do you have any upcoming releases or signings or conventions? Well, I guess you wouldn't do conventions then, right, if you're anonymous. Or do you ever wear a
Fallen Scynclair: Mm. Mm-hmm. Yeah, yeah. I I've
Lori: mask?
Fallen Scynclair: I I would probably show up in a mess, but I I know I have a few people who are been wanting me to go and I'm like, listen, since you don't know what I look like, I could I could be there, but you would just never know, you know? I would just be right next to you and you wouldn't never know. but when it comes to releases, yeah, we have a few. We have Court Ordered by C. Jacopi, which is a sapphic mafia romance. featuring Lyra Blake, Skylark, Vanilla Voices, Tim Page, Grayson Owens, Silas Hard. and it's that that one's gonna be that's gonna be a fun one. one of the female main characters is a triplet. So I'm one of those triplets. And yeah, he's he's Kind of a dick sometimes, but it's okay. and then we have the second book from The Midnight Order, which was the by Kay Mixon. It's it's called The Midnight Nexus, and it's the final book to the Thorn Grey Vampire's Duet. that's gonna be featuring Autumn Mercer, Brandon Francis, Matthew D. Reed. I think this is Casey Howell? Casey or Cassie Howell? my god, she's gonna hate me. Anyways, and
Cassie: Ha ha.
Fallen Scynclair: then we got
Lori: Ha ha ha.
Fallen Scynclair: We got Ivan Merrera and Henry Kramer. So the stacked cast is gonna be it's gonna be really good. And then I have a small cameo in a book that I cannot talk about. and then this one final book as the main o the main character, and I'm so excited for everybody to hear it, but I can't say what it is. I'm so sorry. It's
Cassie: Sorry.
Lori: It's okay.
Fallen Scynclair: it's most likely gonna be released early September. Hopefully in the middle of it. So
Lori: So pretty soon.
Fallen Scynclair: mm, mm mm, mm-hmm. Yeah, no, I'm ex so excited about that one. so yeah, yeah. I'm so sorry, I can't tell you guys
Lori: It's okay.
Cassie: We'll keep an eye out.
Lori: Part of the job.
Fallen Scynclair: Mm-hmm.
