00:00:50.079 --> 00:00:57.920
So grab your headphones, settle in, and let's explore another episode in a North Point Counseling Perspective.
00:00:58.159 --> 00:01:16.319
In today's podcast, I'll explore the nature of gaslighting, its psychological mechanisms, where and how it shows up, particularly in relationships affected by sexual addiction, the impact it has on its victims, and the pathways to healing and truth.
00:01:16.560 --> 00:01:25.840
Understanding gaslighting is essential not only for those who have been subjected to it, but also for those who use it as a relational defense.
00:01:26.159 --> 00:01:39.519
Though the term originated from a 1938 play entitled Gaslight, the behavior it describes has existed far longer and is present in many relational contexts today.
00:01:39.760 --> 00:01:45.200
Marriages, families, workplaces, even spiritual environments.
00:01:45.439 --> 00:01:50.719
It's more than lying, it's lying with the intention to confuse or control.
00:01:51.439 --> 00:01:56.640
The abuser isn't just denying facts, they're rewriting reality.
00:01:56.959 --> 00:02:01.840
Unlike overt abuse, gaslighting is insidious.
00:02:02.079 --> 00:02:10.639
It's quite strategic and often difficult to identify until significant psychological damage has already been done.
00:02:10.960 --> 00:02:12.719
So here's the truth.
00:02:37.919 --> 00:02:51.120
Or perhaps shifts the blame by saying, This is your fault, not mine, or trying to undermine their partner's credibility by saying, Nobody else would ever believe you.
00:02:51.360 --> 00:03:03.680
Or when the gaslighter deliberately tries to minimize their partner's feelings, they'll say, you're too emotional, you're overreacting, you're psychotic, you're too sensitive.
00:03:04.000 --> 00:03:12.719
The goal is to make the other person feel off balance, dependent, and increasingly unsure of what's true.
00:03:13.039 --> 00:03:19.599
Gaslighting is very common in relationships where sexual addiction or compulsive sexual behavior is present.
00:03:19.840 --> 00:03:27.680
Take, for example, when the husband in this case is hiding pornography use, affairs, or compulsive sexual behavior.
00:03:27.919 --> 00:03:31.120
They often go to great lengths to protect the secret.
00:03:31.360 --> 00:03:42.960
Gaslighting becomes a defense mechanism designed to avoid consequences, protect their image, maintain control, and delay disclosure.
00:03:43.599 --> 00:03:45.360
Here's a real life example.
00:03:45.520 --> 00:03:53.680
Let's say a husband is confronted by his wife after she finds explicit texts or unusual charges on their account.
00:03:53.919 --> 00:03:58.319
Instead of confessing, he responds with, This must be spam.
00:03:58.719 --> 00:04:01.199
I have no idea where that came from.
00:04:01.680 --> 00:04:05.039
You're always looking for something to be upset about.
00:04:05.280 --> 00:04:06.960
You clearly don't trust me.
00:04:07.199 --> 00:04:08.639
That's the real problem.
00:04:09.280 --> 00:04:14.000
Well, over time, the wife begins to distrust her intuition.
00:04:14.319 --> 00:04:20.800
She may even apologize for being too suspicious when in fact her instincts were spot on.
00:04:21.120 --> 00:04:27.360
This kind of manipulative denial is especially damaging because it compounds the betrayal.
00:04:27.680 --> 00:04:30.240
It doesn't just hurt, it confuses.
00:04:30.720 --> 00:04:36.160
And in betrayal trauma, confusion can be more destabilizing than the truth itself.
00:04:36.639 --> 00:04:40.639
So before I continue, I want to make something very clear though.
00:04:40.959 --> 00:04:44.639
Not everyone who lies is gaslighting.
00:04:44.959 --> 00:04:48.480
Gaslighting is intentional and often chronic.
00:04:48.720 --> 00:05:02.560
Those who gaslight may feel threatened by the truth, be deeply ashamed of their actions, lack the tools to handle conflict healthily, fear abandonment or rejection, or want to avoid accountability.
00:05:02.800 --> 00:05:08.480
But intentions aside, the result is the same emotional harm and loss of trust.
00:05:08.720 --> 00:05:26.639
Victims of gaslighting often experience chronic self-doubt, anxiety and hypervigilance, guilt and shame for expressing normal emotions, sense of isolation, maybe I'm the problem, and identity confusion.
00:05:26.959 --> 00:05:29.680
I don't even know who I am anymore.
00:05:30.000 --> 00:05:33.839
Some partners describe it as a slow erosion of the soul.
00:05:34.079 --> 00:05:41.199
They begin to live in a fog, unsure of what's real, what's imagined, or whether the thoughts are even valid.
00:05:41.519 --> 00:05:45.759
In real life, it's not always as obvious as dimmed lights.
00:05:46.000 --> 00:05:47.759
It's usually subtle.
00:05:48.079 --> 00:05:53.360
As it builds over time, the partner starts to question herself.
00:05:53.680 --> 00:05:55.279
Did I imagine it?
00:05:55.680 --> 00:05:57.439
Am I overreacting?
00:05:58.079 --> 00:06:00.079
Am I just insecure?
00:06:00.720 --> 00:06:02.000
The reality?
00:06:02.480 --> 00:06:07.839
He was hiding a long-standing pattern of pornography use and sexual acting out.
00:06:08.240 --> 00:06:15.120
But through gaslighting, he shifts the focus away from himself and causes her to doubt her instincts.
00:06:15.279 --> 00:06:24.399
And again, over time, this erodes her trust in her own perception, and she may begin to feel anxious, confused, or even emotionally unstable.
00:06:24.639 --> 00:06:28.319
That's the power and the harm of gaslighting.
00:06:28.560 --> 00:06:34.000
It's not just lying, it's lying in a way that causes someone to question their sanity.
00:06:34.399 --> 00:06:36.959
So where does gaslighting show up?
00:06:37.360 --> 00:06:38.879
Well, good question.
00:06:39.199 --> 00:06:46.240
Gaslighting can occur in any relationship, romantic, professional, parental, even spiritual.
00:06:46.480 --> 00:06:48.160
Here's how it might appear.
00:06:48.399 --> 00:06:57.839
In a marriage, one partner constantly blames the other for problems, denies hurtful behavior, and makes the other feel crazy for expressing pain.
00:06:58.079 --> 00:07:07.439
In the workplace, a boss might take credit for your work, deny promises, or say, I never said that, even when they clearly did.
00:07:07.920 --> 00:07:16.560
In families, a parent may twist the narrative of the past event to avoid accountability, making the child question their own memories.
00:07:16.879 --> 00:07:26.879
In spiritual context, sadly, spiritual leaders may even manipulate people to maintain control using guilt or selective scripture as tools.
00:07:27.199 --> 00:07:35.839
Gaslighting thrives where there is imbalance, where one person seeks to dominate and silence the other.
00:07:36.160 --> 00:07:39.600
The psychological effects of gaslighting are profound.
00:07:39.920 --> 00:08:16.240
Victims often experience chronic self-doubt, the constant questioning of their own thoughts, feelings, and memories, anxiety and confusion, difficulty trusting themselves or others leading to emotional instability, shame and guilt, believing they are the problem, or that their feelings are unreasonable, isolation, feeling misunderstood, disbelieved, or even mocked by others, and loss of identity, the blurring of personal boundaries and values, leading to a fractured sense of self.
00:08:16.560 --> 00:08:22.879
The more subtle and long term the gaslighting is, the more damaging it tends to be.
00:08:23.279 --> 00:08:33.840
It often leads to emotional dependency on the abuser, as the victim increasingly relies on them for interpretation of what is real.
00:08:34.399 --> 00:08:43.200
Children raised in gaslighting environments may grow into adults who struggle with boundaries, emotional regulation, and self-worth.
00:08:43.679 --> 00:08:51.759
Spouses subjected to it may eventually stop speaking up for themselves, resigned to confusion and fear.
00:08:52.399 --> 00:08:57.759
But remember, it's more than just confusion, it's soul wariness.
00:08:58.320 --> 00:09:03.919
Many people in counseling tell me I don't even know what real is anymore.
00:09:04.080 --> 00:09:06.720
And that's exactly what gaslighting does.
00:09:06.879 --> 00:09:09.679
It distorts truth and undermines trust.
00:09:09.919 --> 00:09:16.159
Gaslighting often stems from a need to control, rooted in fear, pride, or insecurity.
00:09:16.480 --> 00:09:22.080
But healing is possible for both the one being gaslit and the one doing the gaslighting.
00:09:22.399 --> 00:09:25.039
So how do you know if you're being gaslit?
00:09:25.440 --> 00:09:27.759
Well, let me share a few warning signs.
00:09:28.000 --> 00:09:31.919
One of the signs is you constantly second guess yourself.
00:09:32.240 --> 00:09:35.840
You feel like you're too sensitive or not enough.
00:09:36.320 --> 00:09:39.679
You often find yourself apologizing often.
00:09:40.000 --> 00:09:44.000
You feel like something's wrong, but you just can't put your finger on it.
00:09:44.320 --> 00:09:46.639
Or you feel isolated or crazy.
00:09:46.960 --> 00:09:50.559
If any of these sound familiar, I want you to know this.
00:09:50.799 --> 00:09:52.240
You're not crazy.
00:09:52.559 --> 00:09:54.559
You need to trust your gut.
00:09:55.120 --> 00:10:01.840
From a biblical worldview, gaslighting stands in direct contrast to truth and love.
00:10:02.240 --> 00:10:13.600
Scripture tells us that God is a God of truth, John fourteen, six, and that love rejoices in the truth, first Corinthians thirteen, six.
00:10:14.159 --> 00:10:21.840
When one partner deceives another to protect themselves, they violate both the truth and the covenant of love.
00:10:22.639 --> 00:10:27.279
Jesus warned against the hypocrisy of hiding sin and shifting blame.
00:10:27.679 --> 00:10:35.440
He said, You are like whitewashed tombs, outwardly beautiful, but inwardly full of dead man bones.
00:10:35.759 --> 00:10:37.759
Matthew twenty three twenty seven.
00:10:38.000 --> 00:10:43.360
The call to repentance is not just for forgiveness, but for transformation.
00:10:44.080 --> 00:10:50.559
Healing in the biblical sense begins with truth telling, confession, and restoration.
00:10:51.200 --> 00:10:57.360
The gospel offers hope, not just for the wounded, but also for the one who wounds.
00:10:57.600 --> 00:11:06.000
When gaslighting is replaced by humility, accountability, and truth, broken relationships can begin to mend.
00:11:06.240 --> 00:11:10.720
Gaslighting is a dangerous and destructive form of emotional abuse.
00:11:10.960 --> 00:11:19.440
It erodes a person's ability to trust themselves, disconnects them from emotional reality, and fosters deep confusion and shame.
00:11:19.679 --> 00:11:26.799
In relationships impacted by sexual addiction, it compounds betrayal and inflicts lasting trauma.
00:11:27.039 --> 00:11:30.399
Yet, as I mentioned, healing is possible.
00:11:30.639 --> 00:11:39.519
With awareness, support, and intentional action, those who have been gaslit can reclaim their voice, their truth, and their identity.
00:11:39.840 --> 00:11:49.120
And those who have used gaslighting to manipulate or self-protect can learn new ways of relating, with honesty, courage, and grace.
00:11:49.600 --> 00:11:58.399
In a culture increasingly blurred by relativism and half truths, the call to live in truth has never been more urgent.
00:11:58.720 --> 00:12:07.120
May we be people who speak truth, protect the vulnerable, and cultivate relationships grounded in honesty, empathy, and trust.
00:12:07.440 --> 00:12:10.960
Recovery from gaslighting begins with recognizing it.
00:12:11.279 --> 00:12:19.679
This often requires a moment of clarity, sometimes triggered by counseling, an external voice of truth, or a spiritual awakening.
00:12:20.000 --> 00:12:25.279
Naming the manipulation for what it is brings validation and power back to the victim.
00:12:25.600 --> 00:12:28.480
So here's some steps again towards healing.
00:12:28.720 --> 00:12:30.399
Recognize the pattern.
00:12:30.639 --> 00:12:33.039
Acknowledge the distortion of reality.
00:12:33.360 --> 00:12:35.759
Gaslighting is not a disagreement.
00:12:36.080 --> 00:12:39.919
It is a deliberate attempt to mislead and manipulate.
00:12:40.240 --> 00:12:42.080
Document interactions.
00:12:42.720 --> 00:12:51.360
Keeping a written record of conversations, events, or behaviors can help clarify the truth and confirm one's experience.
00:12:51.679 --> 00:12:53.679
Seek external support.
00:12:54.080 --> 00:13:02.559
A trauma-informed counselor, a trusted friend, or support group can provide validation and help dismantle false narratives.
00:13:02.879 --> 00:13:07.679
Set boundaries, limit or eliminate discussions that involve manipulation.
00:13:07.919 --> 00:13:13.679
Learn to say, I know what I saw, or this conversation isn't productive for me.
00:13:14.159 --> 00:13:15.919
Rebuild self-trust.
00:13:16.159 --> 00:13:22.720
This is a process of healing emotional wounds and learning to trust your own voice, emotions, and instincts again.
00:13:22.960 --> 00:13:27.840
For those who have been gaslighting as a defense, there is also hope.
00:13:28.080 --> 00:13:43.919
Acknowledging the harm done, confessing the behavior, and committing to a path of emotional honesty and integrity can begin to rebuild trust, but it must be accompanied by consistent action and professional help.
00:13:44.159 --> 00:13:48.240
So as I close today's episode, I want to leave you with this reminder.
00:13:48.799 --> 00:13:53.200
Gaslighting is not about miscommunication, it's about manipulation.
00:13:53.440 --> 00:13:59.360
And healing begins the moment you stop second guessing your instincts and start trusting the truth.
00:13:59.600 --> 00:14:10.399
If you're listening and you've been impacted by gaslighting, whether in a marriage, a friendship, a family relationship, or as part of sexual betrayal trauma, know this.
00:14:10.720 --> 00:14:13.200
You're not alone and you're not crazy.
00:14:13.440 --> 00:14:17.600
What you've experienced is real and your feelings are valid.
00:14:17.919 --> 00:14:25.600
At North Point Professional Counseling, we walk alongside individuals and couples who are rebuilding after broken trust.
00:14:25.759 --> 00:14:31.279
We believe in the power of truth, accountability, and grace to restore what's been lost.
00:14:31.519 --> 00:14:35.919
If today's episode stirred something in you, take the next step.
00:14:36.159 --> 00:14:39.039
Reach out to someone, write it down.
00:14:39.279 --> 00:14:43.440
Begin the work of reclaiming your voice, your clarity, and your healing.
00:14:43.679 --> 00:14:49.600
And if you've recognized gaslighting behaviors in yourself, don't run from the truth.
00:14:49.919 --> 00:14:50.720
Own it.
00:14:51.039 --> 00:14:54.240
Confession and change are hard.
00:14:54.559 --> 00:14:57.440
But they're the foundation of real transformation.
00:14:57.679 --> 00:15:01.600
Truth doesn't destroy relationships, it rebuilds them.
00:15:01.840 --> 00:15:04.799
Thank you for joining me on North Point Counseling Perspective.
00:15:04.960 --> 00:15:09.360
If this episode helped you, consider sharing it with a friend or leave a review.
00:15:09.519 --> 00:15:17.440
And remember, the journey from confusion to clarity is possible when we walk it together with honesty, compassion, and hope.
00:15:17.679 --> 00:15:20.480
Until next time, I'm John Sternfels.
00:15:20.639 --> 00:15:23.360
Take care of yourself and stay grounded in truth.
