"We're never gonna hire you."
Daniel Chilton built his entire plan around becoming an attorney in the financial industry. Then the bank's general counsel took that future off the table in a single sentence.
Daniel was working 7:30 to 5:00 in finance at a large national bank, then heading straight to law school at night. He finished the four-year program in three years, and the bank was paying for the degree. Everything pointed to one goal.
The rejection crushed him. He spiraled into depression, questioning his purpose and his identity.
His turning point did not come from having all the answers. It came from accepting peace from God, doing the next right thing in front of him, and putting what he calls the "weights of responsibility" back on. And it came from realizing his career had become his aim when his real purpose was bigger than a job title: his family.
His lesson: aim higher than what's oppressing you.
Daniel kept moving forward. He became an attorney, worked cases on the side while still in finance, and eventually made one of the hardest decisions of his career: leaving the bank for a law firm. Two months later, the same bank that said it would never hire him called with an attorney position. "It's yours if you want it."
