Speaker 1: Forty nine of football always on our mind and Eric Branch he covers it quite well too, wrote about with Nick Bosa's knee tended night is today they got a joint practice with the Chargers today. A lot to get to, so E Branch. I believe it's our first chat this summer. Welcome back to Murphin Marcus.
00:00:32
Speaker 3: How you doing?
00:00:32
Speaker 4: Man?
00:00:32
Speaker 3: Hey, what's up?
00:00:33
Speaker 4: Eric Fellows? Thank you? I appreciate it. Nice to reconnect.
00:00:40
Speaker 2: Are you down there in La?
00:00:43
Speaker 4: You know I am not. You know, unexpected things happen in life and something an expensive appen. No big deal, but I can't be down there this week.
00:00:51
Speaker 1: Okay, Well we'll rely on who you have, the ever reliable Noah for Tado.
00:00:54
Speaker 4: Down there exactly. You have everything.
00:01:00
Speaker 2: It's all handled too.
00:01:01
Speaker 1: Let's handle the sticky situation of Christian McCaffrey.
00:01:05
Speaker 2: My friend, he has tightness. He's out now.
00:01:08
Speaker 1: People are speculating some he might be holding in. I don't know, Eric, how's your BS meter on the Christian McCaffrey tightness injury versus contract hold in.
00:01:20
Speaker 4: Well, there are a lot of dots you could logically logically connect and say you maybe there is something there that it's more contract than tightness. It's interesting as a practice for a week with a very vague injury description tightness. Generally the Niners are a tad more specific. Sometimes they go with soreness. But you know, I would say this is rare. Obviously, Jim Gibbs and v John Robinson have gotten massive extensions and now they're they're paid more than Christian McCaffrey. Christian McCaffrey has no more guaranteed money on his contract, which has two more years. Chrish mccaffee is thirty. He just had four hundred and thirteen touches which let the NFL you know, could be in line for another season like that, and you know, it's logical to think he would like to be compensated, have a little more security here on the back end of his contract as far as guaranteed money. All that being said, I don't think there's been a source saying this. It's more speculation, but it seems like you know, someone has educated speculation.
00:02:37
Speaker 3: Eric. There's similar speculation on Nick Bosa right now as well, what can you tell us about his current status.
00:02:44
Speaker 4: Well, I think as it relates to having you know, ten deny this and a surgically repaired me, I'm now basing this. I don't have a medical degree, but I have taught to surgeons. For the story Mark mentioned, you know that he is common as Kyle Shanahan said, you know, in order to have a graph for the for the ACL repair, they take it from you know, other tissue and and so what whatever that says it's a quadriceps tendon and then so you don't have as much quadrceps tendon and that makes it more prone to developing tendonitis. So that in and of itself is you know, not necessarily a big deal, and it's something with rest generally and other types of therapy that will resolve. But in talking to you know, I talked to two surgeons and you know, really talk to them because I want to talk about tendonitis and what it means for Nick Mosa. And you know that's what they said. But they've you know, we've got into discussing. You know, that's the second a cl repair he's had on his right knee, and you know, they just talked about the complications that come with that, the longer recovery time, and you know, one of them said that it's not realistic to think Nick Bosa is going to be looking like his pre injury you know self next month, and it's conceivable, you know, he really won't reach that level this year because just one ACL tair on a knee that's nine to twelve months is pretty standard. But he's saying, you know, when you have a second ACL tair, it's really a twelve to eighteen month recovery. You know. If Nick Bosa is on the longer end of that, you know, and that means he's not going to be quite himself, you know, until the twenty twenty seventh season. Does that mean Nick Bosa is going to be like, you know, an average NFL player, I don't think so. It just means like, you know, to expect him to be twenty twenty two NFL be differentive Player of the Year, and that's not happening.
00:04:50
Speaker 1: So, you know, we open with the first two topics and they're both older guys fighting ailments. And the third topic I bring up is another older fighting an ailman that's George Kittle, which would lead us to probably the conclusion that all the fears that the Niners might be too old are maybe well founded.
00:05:11
Speaker 2: But I'll ask that after.
00:05:13
Speaker 1: I ask you about George Kittle and any feeling or sense you have about his timeline.
00:05:20
Speaker 4: Well, you know, he was not surprisingly very optimistic. I don't yeah, I don't think he was bs in. But you know, he basically ruled out starting this season on the on the pup list, which means, you know, if we were to start the season on the pup list, he had missed the first four games. So you know, given you know the injury he had just in January, the fact that he expects to be back, you know almost for for sure. I let's say week three, you know it was great, so he'd missed two games with it with an achilles Terry Sepon in January. You know, I think the fact that Austuelia is the first game. You know, obviously I don't know the specifics of his timeline and where he is more am I then expert on you know what playing travel would do to you know, a guy in that situation, you know, seventeen hours of playing travel. But I would think, you know, if the Niners probably want to exercise caution with they're all pro tight end who's going to turn thirty three this year, and you know, with that in mind, they might just keep him back, you know, to stand on his normal schedule and you know, shoot for week two or week three.
00:06:38
Speaker 3: Eric moving on from some of the older players to some of the younger guys that got an opportunity to see last week against the Titans and potential this week against the Chargers. From Dejon Shriveling and Grayson Halton and Jaden Duggar, who were some of the younger guys that stood out the most of you last week and guys that maybe you're keeping an eye on this week against the Chargers.
00:06:55
Speaker 4: Well, all those guys you just mentioned are are notable to me. The big one was Curtis Rourke. I was like, you know, he hadn't played in six hundred days, like a game in six hundred days. So that was his NFL debut, and you know all the caveats preseason opener, et cetera, et cetera, But he was with the Niners backups against the first string, you know, largely the first string Titans defense. That's not the eighty five Bears or anything, but he looked like so confident and just like in command. You know, he would get to the back of it, you know, you know, like there were just one. I'm just getting excited thinking about it. Yeah, it was just it was there was just no hesitation, and it helped that. You know, Stribling looks to be quite good, and he was often in the first read and Stribling was often open. But even in cases where it wasn't as obvious, you know, go year right now, you know, he just looks like he really has something and you know he's he showed little escapability. Now granted that did get him in trouble because you know, he got hurt. I couldn't finish the game. And you know he's had two ACL tears on the same me himself. So you know, we're getting too excited about you know, whatever he could be or become. You know, he does a pretty extensive medical file. But I think he is on you know, you know, because I'm the quarterback expert, I can say this, but you know, I think he's an NFL quarterback, whether that means he's a backup or whatever, but I think he's he's going to stick around and have an NFL career, which you know, I can't say that for all quarterbacks. Tracture in the seventh round.
00:08:46
Speaker 1: It's stuff Eric brandchef'sco chronicle talking McCaffrey, Bosa Kittle, Curtis Rourke, all this good stuff. Listen, everybody's always looking for the latest transaction. Von Miller signs with the Cowboys. You're like, yo, I mean, he's old, but he had nine sex last year and limited snaps. And then Zadarius Smith, who retired last October abruptly has now come out of retirement signed with the Falcons. Those are two pass rushers, four and airs would like pass rushers. Did you think when you saw either one of those? And the Zadarius Smith was just this morning sound if you saw it, But did you think when you saw von Miller and you hear that about Smith? That's two things the forty nine ers should have been in on.
00:09:25
Speaker 4: You know, I'm not sure at this point, you know, and look, oh sorry, that's Charlie the dog. How about that? Listen, Murph, I don't need to tell you. If you look at the advanced analytics on von Miller's you know season last year, you know those sachel might be aloneless lady. Yeah, I'm just kidding with you. But anyway, my point would be, but you know, I'm not sure those guys at this point in their careers are you know, it's going to be huge different difference makers. That said, I really do think the nine could use, you know, maybe one of those guys, someone like that, who might you know, be an upgrade over what they have at the moment. And you know that's Nick Bosa and you know they have a big Azua inside, but as far as another, you know, guy off the edge, there's not a clear cut person. They've got big hopes for Romelo Height, their third round draft pick, to kind of fill that role and be that guy. But you know, a little Height is a rookie and he's two hundred and thirty nine pounds, and you know that remains to be seen. You know, he played three drives in the preseason opener and you know it looks like the rookie. So I guess answer your question, you know, I don't think at this point, you know, they necessarily need to panic, but they may get there kind of soon.
00:10:59
Speaker 3: Eric question for me, circling back to Christian McCaffrey in the backfield, last week, we did not see Kaylon Black, we did not see Jordan James. Any updates on their status if if they could potentially play today in the joint practice or this week against the Chargers.
00:11:13
Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't know. You know, they're not viewed as you know, anything that's going to threaten you know, the regular season. But I'm not sure if they're going to be ready to go now. Just I mean, it's great that they'll be ready for week one, you know, buying another setback for those guys. But you know, as we saw was Jordan James last year. You know, he had I want to say, Booken Finger early on in his rookie training camp and just put him behind and he never really got up to speed. So you know, a similar thing could you know. I'm unfold with Kaylon Black, who looked really you know, it's really hard to tell, you know, with running backs and non padded practices, but it did look like he had a little stuffing to him and he thinks, okay, well, I can see what the Niners were thinking because he was a pretty controversial pick. Uh. And then the point I are saying he was their second, you know, highest greatest running back was she met with some rolling of the eyes and what are you talking about? But anyway, the very early returns on him were like, Okay, this guy's got some juice. But you know, if you can't get on the field, uh, you know, obviously that's going to hinder in his development. The thing is they're going to need somebody, you know, to play behind Christian McCaffrey and those two guys Jams and black Are you know, really at this point, the only options.
00:12:43
Speaker 1: Eric this last one is one more injury and that's the rookie kids from last year. Michael Williams week nine, I think it was when he tore the A c L. What is there any chance he plays anytime soon?
00:12:58
Speaker 4: Pessimistic on that one. I wouldn't that one, you know, I'm not. I don't have any inside information on that, but that one, you know, I would think they want to, you know, be very careful, and that's conceivable. He can start on pups. So if you had missed the first four weeks, you know, and make his debut in week five. We haven't had a whole lot of you know, concrete information, you know, I get maybe in part because Shanahan hasn't talked as much in this training camp for obvious reasons. But you know he is not obviously on the field. You know, he's just been off to the side doing rehab work, so you know he's certainly not looking ready to you know, playing week one for certain put.
00:13:49
Speaker 2: Him on the back burner.
00:13:50
Speaker 1: Huh and old Kyle, I mean it's been it was July fourteenth, you guys found out July twenty fifth, it's.
00:13:56
Speaker 2: Not August eighteen. Is he all the way back from that accident?
00:14:04
Speaker 4: I'm not sure. You know, the last time he really talks about it in depths, you know, he said he's really fine, and he's really over he's only dealing with headaches and fatigue, and you know, not to make light of it anyway, it's a very serious situation. But I mean those are you know, real concussion symptoms. So you know, I think, you know, him saying that it does speak to what he was dealing with previously and the severity of some of his symptoms and the fact that he can now say, hey, I'm only dealing with headaches and fatigues fatigue, you know, shows you know how how far he's he's come. But you know, that said, I think that was last week, you know, he was saying that. So he's still dealing with things. But I really think he's, you know, more or less back to his you know, full schedule.
00:14:54
Speaker 1: So we covered a lot, Eric and so much more. We'll have to do it again sometime, buddy. Enjoy your little respite from the grind here and we will look forward to your next piece in the chronicle.
00:15:08
Speaker 4: All right, Murph, I never said it wasn't going to be grinding, and I just said it was going to be in la Come.
00:15:13
Speaker 2: On, okay, so you're still grinding.
00:15:14
Speaker 3: You in charge.
00:15:17
Speaker 4: I'm just playing with you.
00:15:18
Speaker 2: Yeah, will you are you? You'll be in Australia. When do you go to Australia by the way.
00:15:26
Speaker 4: So that'll be September second, that everyone will take off to Australia. Obviously that's a different topic as far as the way that Rams and forty nine ers are treating that, as far as when they arrive and prepare for that one. But yeah, the Niners and the Beat writers are traveling separately, but also going September second.
00:15:47
Speaker 2: Have you been to Australia in your life?
00:15:50
Speaker 4: I have not, have you?
00:15:52
Speaker 1: No, no, no no, And it will remain that way on September tenth too.
00:16:00
Speaker 4: Yeah, no, kind of a bucket listening. I'd like to, you know, go with the wife and everything. But you know, you know, if you're cann go somehow somewhere, it's a good thing, all.
00:16:10
Speaker 1: Right, buddy, good Ay, Eric, all right, be good and uh we'll cat jump down the road.
00:16:15
Speaker 4: Yeah, thanks Eric, all right, appreciate you guys. Have a good one.
00:16:17
Speaker 1: The Great Eric Branch covers those forty nine ers, Man forty nine ers, McCaffrey, Bosa, Michael Williams, on and on and on. Oh my, oh my goodness. September ten in Australia. I just got to get there now.
00:16:29
Speaker 3: We're in that.
00:16:30
Speaker 2: We're in the dog days of training camp right now.
00:16:32
Speaker 3: Get us through these joint practices, get us through the preseason and get us to Australia.
00:16:36
Speaker 2: Get me through tightness. Yeah, tightness.
00:16:39
Speaker 3: No, I'd really see the Tennessee Titans again and then all this tightness.
00:16:42
Speaker 1: Do I even read this freaking text here, because there's people are just so mean. They said, let me find the exact.
00:16:48
Speaker 3: Tes you teased, it might as well read it.
00:16:50
Speaker 2: Well, it's a it's a cheap shot, ah, he said.
00:16:53
Speaker 1: Kyle Shanahan has tightness dot dot dot in the fourth quarter of the ship.
00:16:58
Speaker 3: I thought you were going to read the text about Risian McCaffrey having a tight wallly.
00:17:01
Speaker 2: Well there's that. That's a pretty good line exactly. So uh no, it'd be the forty nine ers with the tightwall. Yeah, that's right. Yeah, open up that checkbook. There we go.
00:17:10
Speaker 1: Cooler content always the best sound out there. Some crazy stuff going on, and of course Scott Austin's going to dress a nine fifteen.
00:17:16
Speaker 2: That's awesome. That'll be fun on the Sports Leader knb RB Sports Leader
