ABOUT THIS EPISODE
How do mountain bikers actually wipe out? Josh went digging and found a study that looked at 534 mountain bike crash videos. Just over half were over-the-bars crashes, about half happened on moderate descents, 64% came from poor jump landings, and three quarters were at speeds of 18.6 mph or faster. Josh, who admits he rides cautiously and never jumps, takes that as a green light to keep doing exactly what he's doing. Dane has a few opinions, and a parking lot crash story that doesn't help the "just go slower" theory.
Episode 136, "Crash, Heal, Repeat: Mountain Biking After an Injury," goes from the numbers to the hard part, which is recovery. Dane and Josh talk about the difference between crashing and getting hurt, learning how to fall, pads and protective gear, and why the mental side of coming back from a crash can take longer than the physical side. Expect plenty of stories from Angel Fire, Whistler, and Tucson, plus a few ways to ride smarter without giving up the fun.

00:00:09.839 --> 00:00:11.599
I don't think I can do that.
00:00:13.119 --> 00:00:18.800
I don't know how to make the however you're doing it.
00:00:18.800 --> 00:00:20.079
Good lord, dude.
00:00:20.079 --> 00:00:20.719
Already.
00:00:20.719 --> 00:00:21.440
We just started.
00:00:21.440 --> 00:00:21.839
I know.
00:00:21.839 --> 00:00:26.480
20 seconds in, and you're already like still messing with your mic, making a bunch of background sounds.
00:00:26.480 --> 00:00:27.600
We need to start this thing over.
00:00:27.600 --> 00:00:28.399
It just moved.
00:00:28.399 --> 00:00:28.879
No.
00:00:28.879 --> 00:00:30.480
We're committed.
00:00:30.480 --> 00:00:31.359
We're committed now.
00:00:31.359 --> 00:00:31.920
We're committed.
00:00:31.920 --> 00:00:34.799
Alright, Wednesday night in the MCP here in Guru Bikes.
00:00:34.799 --> 00:00:36.399
We've been doing a lot of podcasts here.
00:00:36.399 --> 00:00:39.439
Uh today I had to bring a bike in to get fixed, so I was like, hey Dane.
00:00:39.439 --> 00:00:40.799
Dane's been like, hey, we'll do it at your place.
00:00:40.799 --> 00:00:42.320
I'm like, no, no, no, I gotta bring a bike in.
00:00:42.399 --> 00:00:45.759
So I know I gotta pay back and be at your place for like two months.
00:00:46.320 --> 00:00:47.439
We'd love your thoughts on this.
00:00:47.439 --> 00:00:54.960
So my wife has got a switchblade and she had it up at a bike park uh last week, and it's got some, we think, some negative air chamber issues with it.
00:00:54.960 --> 00:00:59.200
It's got a 36 on it, and we were kicking around like, should we fix it?
00:00:59.200 --> 00:01:00.640
Should we buy a new one?
00:01:00.640 --> 00:01:05.519
We're all into this rock shock suspension right now with the buttercups and all that stuff.
00:01:05.519 --> 00:01:06.799
And so I said, Dane.
00:01:07.040 --> 00:01:07.519
Butter wagon.
00:01:07.680 --> 00:01:08.159
Butter wagon.
00:01:08.159 --> 00:01:09.280
Oh, this is gonna have the new new one.
00:01:09.280 --> 00:01:11.680
Is it a 3.2 damper?
00:01:11.920 --> 00:01:13.120
I don't I can't keep track.
00:01:13.120 --> 00:01:14.959
It's probably a 3.2115.
00:01:14.959 --> 00:01:18.400
We want like it's a something somewhat like an Apple update.
00:01:18.400 --> 00:01:18.719
Yeah.
00:01:18.959 --> 00:01:23.760
We went back and forth um between putting a lyric and putting a Zeb on a switchblade.
00:01:23.760 --> 00:01:28.640
We decided, uh, with Dane's help guiding us to go with the lyric.
00:01:28.640 --> 00:01:30.480
So what do you think, listeners?
00:01:30.480 --> 00:01:32.640
Was that the right or the wrong decision?
00:01:32.959 --> 00:01:35.359
Yeah, would you do a 160 lyric?
00:01:35.359 --> 00:01:38.079
So lyrics top out at 170.
00:01:38.079 --> 00:01:38.319
Yeah.
00:01:38.319 --> 00:01:41.840
That's the most you can get on a 29 on the new ones anyway.
00:01:41.840 --> 00:01:52.640
And then um, would you have rather have a 160 lyric or step down a 170 Zeb to 160 and run it?
00:01:52.640 --> 00:01:54.319
So that's interesting.
00:01:54.319 --> 00:01:58.400
So I think I think it's just gonna depend on who you are and how much you weigh.
00:01:58.640 --> 00:02:02.239
And she's and she's light, she's 130 pounds or something.
00:02:02.239 --> 00:02:04.319
So she's a light girl.
00:02:04.319 --> 00:02:07.519
Um, and she likes to ride poppy and loose, so yeah.
00:02:07.680 --> 00:02:10.479
Effectively, they're essentially the same fork.
00:02:10.479 --> 00:02:14.000
Just one's 35 mil stanchions and the other one is 38 mil.
00:02:14.400 --> 00:02:17.120
And about three-quarters of a pound difference between the two, right?
00:02:17.120 --> 00:02:17.280
Yes.
00:02:17.280 --> 00:02:18.159
Or two-thirds of a pound.
00:02:18.400 --> 00:02:27.759
Physically, the overlap, you know, you've got uh the smaller stanchions is a little bit, but you got less overlap to go 180, you know, 170 fork just has less metal in it.
00:02:27.919 --> 00:02:31.199
And I would imagine lyric's gonna be flexier than the zebs, gonna be super stiff.
00:02:31.439 --> 00:02:34.240
I think so, but again, 35 versus 38.
00:02:34.240 --> 00:02:34.719
At her weight.
00:02:35.360 --> 00:02:37.520
Maybe at my weight, it'd probably be a little bit more.
00:02:37.680 --> 00:02:39.840
Yeah, but for you, I would it would have been a no-brainer zebra.
00:02:39.840 --> 00:02:40.719
Just put the zeb.
00:02:40.719 --> 00:02:41.120
Yep.
00:02:41.280 --> 00:02:44.800
All right, man, you might hear it in my voice, but uh I'm not feeling great today.
00:02:45.039 --> 00:02:45.360
Oh.
00:02:46.159 --> 00:02:47.439
Um well it's a weekday.
00:02:47.439 --> 00:02:54.240
Yeah, and uh what I think with what's been happening is that like I'm only getting sick on the weekdays.
00:02:54.240 --> 00:02:55.280
That makes sense.
00:02:55.280 --> 00:02:55.919
Yeah, yeah.
00:02:55.919 --> 00:02:56.879
You want to know why?
00:02:56.879 --> 00:02:57.360
Why?
00:02:57.360 --> 00:02:58.800
I think I've got a theory.
00:02:58.800 --> 00:02:59.280
Okay.
00:02:59.280 --> 00:03:02.800
I think it's because I have a weekend immune system.
00:03:04.479 --> 00:03:05.439
Weak ass.
00:03:05.439 --> 00:03:10.319
Yeah, I'm not gonna.
00:03:10.319 --> 00:03:12.240
That's not as bad as some of the jokes.
00:03:12.479 --> 00:03:13.840
Oh no, I still can't hear you again.
00:03:13.840 --> 00:03:14.479
Something's happened.
00:03:14.479 --> 00:03:15.199
What did I do?
00:03:15.520 --> 00:03:16.240
Did I touch something?
00:03:16.319 --> 00:03:17.120
No, you didn't do it.
00:03:17.120 --> 00:03:19.120
Oh, I'm gonna have to cut that shit out of the podcast now.
00:03:19.120 --> 00:03:19.919
Maybe I'll just leave it in.
00:03:19.919 --> 00:03:21.919
Maybe I'll just get lazy and like leave it a heck.
00:03:22.000 --> 00:03:24.319
You know, we're allowed to have technical difficulties.
00:03:24.319 --> 00:03:25.680
We have a couple every once in a while.
00:03:25.680 --> 00:03:25.919
Yeah.
00:03:25.919 --> 00:03:36.639
I mean, you do an amazing job of cleaning this up, and yeah, I think our listeners can hear the sound quality because they don't only listen to us, they're listening to other podcasts, and oh my god, some of them are awful.
00:03:37.759 --> 00:03:39.759
I'm like, bros, please just give me a call, I can help you.
00:03:40.080 --> 00:03:51.520
Like, I have maxed out the volume on my my car stereo while I'm driving, listening to some podcasts, and then some guest will come on and just blow my speakers out because they're just their levels are so bad.
00:03:51.680 --> 00:03:52.240
It's hilarious.
00:03:52.240 --> 00:04:08.159
One of the main things I have to do because Dane is a low talker, is uh and and doesn't have the same mic awareness that I do growing up as a musician for years and years, but um I have to always like pull it down channel by channel and then adjust Dane's volume up to match my booming loud voice.
00:04:08.159 --> 00:04:10.000
Today I tricked him.
00:04:10.560 --> 00:04:12.479
It's it's so I keep moving my mic.
00:04:12.479 --> 00:04:17.600
If you guys hear that, uh he turned down my headphones so I talk louder.
00:04:17.920 --> 00:04:21.040
So I've tricked him into talking louder so that he can hear himself.
00:04:21.360 --> 00:04:23.199
I keep thinking my mic's too far away.
00:04:23.439 --> 00:04:26.079
But the volume sounds, I'm looking at the levels and it sounds perfect right now.
00:04:26.079 --> 00:04:26.720
Oh my god.
00:04:26.879 --> 00:04:28.160
Little scene into our lives.
00:04:28.480 --> 00:04:29.040
Yeah, right on.
00:04:29.040 --> 00:04:29.360
All right.
00:04:29.360 --> 00:04:35.439
So um another episode that Dane uh suggested and kind of designed for us.
00:04:35.439 --> 00:04:40.480
Um, and this is about getting back on the bike after an injury.
00:04:40.480 --> 00:04:44.160
Uh, and we thought it'd be cool because you actually are going through this recently.
00:04:44.560 --> 00:04:46.079
Yeah, this is a real thing that I'm dealing with.
00:04:46.560 --> 00:04:53.519
And so so uh what I would suggest is why don't you just tell the story to our listeners like what you're going through, and then we can kind of get into the general topics.
00:04:53.759 --> 00:05:00.319
Yeah, because all of the things on this little outline that I made are kind of hitting and it's kind of they're hitting home.
00:05:00.319 --> 00:05:13.279
So uh in our um Whistler episode, I kind of talked about how I rode a little more timid and still recovering after breaking my collarbone at Angel Fire, which we're going to Angel Fire soon, so I get to battle those demons.
00:05:13.279 --> 00:05:25.360
Um and so this I wanted to have an episode about you know recovering from crashes, recovering from injury, and kind of what I'm going through, which is my body heals way faster than my mind does.
00:05:25.360 --> 00:05:38.879
And so how I'm I I get on the bike and I can kind of recover, and I'm starting to build up my stamina and my my you know small muscles that control my bike, but my brain is the hardest one.
00:05:38.879 --> 00:05:42.639
That's the hardest thing on my body to fix, is my brain.
00:05:42.639 --> 00:05:44.720
And so I'm struggling with that.
00:05:44.720 --> 00:05:48.160
And so it was it was over a year ago, maybe a year ago?
00:05:48.160 --> 00:05:49.279
It was about a year ago, yeah.
00:05:49.600 --> 00:05:55.120
You attempted the wall ride at uh Angel Fire in in a in a in a hail storm.
00:05:55.360 --> 00:06:00.959
Yeah, I was gonna say, like just to be clear, I did that wall ride all weekend, no problem.
00:06:01.279 --> 00:06:03.360
And by definition, it was the last run.
00:06:03.360 --> 00:06:05.040
It was it was too.
00:06:05.040 --> 00:06:05.839
It was the last run.
00:06:05.839 --> 00:06:07.040
It actually was the last day.
00:06:07.040 --> 00:06:08.160
Didn't you like ride up?
00:06:08.160 --> 00:06:09.839
I did because the lift was closed.
00:06:10.000 --> 00:06:11.360
The lift was closed for lightning.
00:06:11.360 --> 00:06:11.600
Yeah.
00:06:11.600 --> 00:06:15.680
Uh they closed the lifts to protect the lifts and keep people off, I think.
00:06:15.680 --> 00:06:20.560
I I don't know if it's just for the lift, but if it they don't want the lift getting hit with people on it.
00:06:20.560 --> 00:06:26.879
And um, and so I decided I had my e-bike, so I got my e-bike and I there's a up trail.
00:06:26.879 --> 00:06:33.040
So I jumped on the up trail and just was gonna ride for a little while just to not be done at like two o'clock.
00:06:33.040 --> 00:06:35.199
Yeah, two or one, yeah, you know.
00:06:35.199 --> 00:06:40.959
And um, and I got pretty high up and uh the uh hail started.
00:06:40.959 --> 00:06:49.120
And uh if anyone is listening has been to Angel Fire during hail, it can sometimes hail so much that it looks like snow on the ground.
00:06:49.120 --> 00:06:49.360
Right.
00:06:49.360 --> 00:06:51.040
Like it's it gets pretty heavy.
00:06:51.040 --> 00:06:52.160
And so I know that.
00:06:52.160 --> 00:06:56.319
And so as soon as I started seeing the hail, I'm like, oh, I better turn around and head down.
00:06:56.319 --> 00:07:01.680
And so I just beelined down, which would would have been a quick six minutes, right, you know, at the most.
00:07:01.680 --> 00:07:02.160
Right.
00:07:02.160 --> 00:07:09.279
And uh I was cooking and feeling good and feeling like I was killing it, and had a good weekend under my belt.
00:07:09.279 --> 00:07:19.519
And man, I passed some guys, thought I was hot stuff, and tried to pass a guy in the air on the wall, you know, and the wall was wet.
00:07:19.519 --> 00:07:22.639
And my tires didn't grab it at all.
00:07:22.639 --> 00:07:24.800
And I went up and straight down.
00:07:24.800 --> 00:07:33.279
And yeah, and I basically I jumped onto it, and you're supposed to deflect yourself off at an angle and then come back down, and I just slid straight down.
00:07:33.279 --> 00:07:42.639
So, you know, I could instead of riding across and using it, my my tires just slid straight to the ground and went shoulder, shoulder into the ground and broke my collarbone.
00:07:42.720 --> 00:07:48.639
So I'll tell you, like the guy that was riding so you passed someone and you effectively kind of jumped over them.
00:07:48.639 --> 00:07:49.920
Yes, yeah.
00:07:49.920 --> 00:07:52.639
What a great feeling that must have been for him.
00:07:52.639 --> 00:07:56.800
Because he was like, That asshole just jumped over me and then you then you follow him.
00:07:56.800 --> 00:07:58.399
Then I crash and break myself.
00:07:58.399 --> 00:07:59.199
Yeah.
00:07:59.439 --> 00:07:59.680
Yeah.
00:08:00.560 --> 00:08:02.160
He's probably telling that story more than you are.
00:08:02.399 --> 00:08:06.720
Yeah, it's pretty damn, pretty damn because yeah, because I got up and I'm like, I broke my collarbone.
00:08:06.720 --> 00:08:08.160
He's like, You want me to call somebody?
00:08:08.160 --> 00:08:10.079
And I'm like, no, and I got on my bike and rode down.
00:08:10.319 --> 00:08:12.720
Kudos for him for being cool and like trying to help you out.
00:08:13.040 --> 00:08:18.000
Yeah, I yeah, it trust me, it was like it was badass if I wouldn't have crashed.
00:08:18.000 --> 00:08:25.519
Like I it would have been like epically badass, but it was not badass with a hospital trip attached.
00:08:25.839 --> 00:08:30.639
So you you messed it up and then it took you, you you had surgery.
00:08:30.800 --> 00:08:31.360
Yeah, yeah.
00:08:31.360 --> 00:08:33.200
So I healed pretty quick.
00:08:33.200 --> 00:08:37.840
Yeah, and um it it wasn't it was a clean break, so it wasn't a fracture.
00:08:37.840 --> 00:08:49.440
Uh kind of broke right in the middle for the most part, and it kept setting itself in the place that it needed to be, so I didn't really have any soft, soft tissue or um you know, tendon problems or anything like that.
00:08:49.440 --> 00:08:57.759
So I was really lucky and I got some nice hardware, enough hardware to have a a Thai road bike if I didn't have to do this.
00:08:57.759 --> 00:09:04.000
Um and uh yeah, I I am you know I my body healed quick, you know.
00:09:04.000 --> 00:09:05.759
And I can't remember.
00:09:05.759 --> 00:09:07.600
I mean, I've already been to Whistler this year.
00:09:08.000 --> 00:09:10.639
You've been to Whistler, you've been to Sunrise at least once with us.
00:09:10.639 --> 00:09:11.360
Couple times.
00:09:11.360 --> 00:09:12.559
Couple times.
00:09:12.559 --> 00:09:18.000
And but but your riding is you you're riding slower and more timid now.
00:09:18.320 --> 00:09:18.720
Yeah, yeah.
00:09:18.720 --> 00:09:21.120
I'm riding way more careful than I normally do.
00:09:21.120 --> 00:09:22.320
I didn't race this season.
00:09:22.320 --> 00:09:29.519
I haven't raced in a while, but we had a a downhill season at sunrise, so four hours away, and I just decided not to do it.
00:09:29.840 --> 00:09:31.360
Much to the chagrin of some of your buddies.
00:09:31.600 --> 00:09:32.240
Yes, yeah.
00:09:32.240 --> 00:09:39.919
And uh I'm just not riding at the level that I want, you know, and and racing always gets in my head and puts me, put makes me push myself.
00:09:40.159 --> 00:09:45.919
Uh I'll never um we haven't told you this, uh huh, but I'll tell you now on air so everyone can hear the story at one time.
00:09:45.919 --> 00:09:50.000
Okay, but Lacey went shortly after you healed up with you to bugs.
00:09:50.000 --> 00:09:54.000
Yes, and you crashed twice on that ride, probably, yeah.
00:09:54.000 --> 00:09:55.600
You never crash on that trail.
00:09:55.840 --> 00:09:56.240
No, uh-uh.
00:09:56.320 --> 00:09:58.320
And so Lacey came on, she's like, something's wrong with Dane.
00:09:58.399 --> 00:09:58.799
Yeah, yeah.
00:09:59.039 --> 00:10:00.240
She's like, he's not himself.
00:10:00.240 --> 00:10:01.840
No, like he crashed twice today.
00:10:01.840 --> 00:10:07.039
Yeah, and then you also crashed at 50, um, coming off a drop, uh, upper 50.
00:10:07.279 --> 00:10:09.840
Yeah, that was before I thought it was after.
00:10:09.840 --> 00:10:11.200
Uh, it may have been after.
00:10:11.200 --> 00:10:12.399
I I can't remember.
00:10:12.399 --> 00:10:16.879
It's all blending because until you just said it, I didn't realize my shoulder was a year ago.
00:10:16.879 --> 00:10:19.840
It's crazy, uh because it's still in my head, right?
00:10:19.919 --> 00:10:21.919
You know, and that's that's why this episode's so interesting.
00:10:22.080 --> 00:10:26.080
Yeah, and so that's so that's where this episode is, as we're talking about that.
00:10:26.080 --> 00:10:29.279
So it's not just the physical, um it's the mental.
00:10:29.279 --> 00:10:30.000
It's the mental.
00:10:30.399 --> 00:10:35.759
Well, as as we were uh as I was kind of just poking around a little bit on this topic, I ran into some interesting things.
00:10:35.759 --> 00:10:49.279
One was a a study done by the uh National Uh Library of Medicine, and uh they actually reviewed five hundred and thirty-four video mountain bike crashes or or videos of of mountain bike crashes.
00:10:49.519 --> 00:10:50.480
Watching fail Friday.
00:10:50.720 --> 00:10:52.879
I honestly think that's probably what they analyzed.
00:10:52.960 --> 00:10:53.360
Yeah, yeah.
00:10:53.519 --> 00:10:56.080
Because because that's a great source of tons of crashes.
00:10:56.080 --> 00:10:56.399
Yeah.
00:10:56.399 --> 00:11:06.960
So they they did a uh analysis on that, and they had uh they cataloged all the crashes, and so there's some some really interesting like metrics that came out of that that I thought would be cool to share with our listeners.
00:11:06.960 --> 00:11:07.600
Let's hear them.
00:11:07.600 --> 00:11:11.840
Uh so first was fifty-five percent of the crashes were over the bars.
00:11:12.159 --> 00:11:12.480
Okay.
00:11:12.799 --> 00:11:13.279
OTB.
00:11:13.279 --> 00:11:14.080
OTB.
00:11:14.080 --> 00:11:16.559
So you're going over the front instead of out the side or out the back.
00:11:16.879 --> 00:11:17.120
Yeah.
00:11:17.759 --> 00:11:21.120
Um 53% of them were on moderate descents.
00:11:21.120 --> 00:11:26.960
I I question how well they really knew that because the video always never shows how steep something really is.
00:11:26.960 --> 00:11:27.200
Yeah.
00:11:27.200 --> 00:11:29.440
So I'm sure it's so they're on descents.
00:11:29.440 --> 00:11:29.679
Yeah.
00:11:29.679 --> 00:11:30.399
53%.
00:11:30.399 --> 00:11:34.159
64% of the crashes Wait, wait.
00:11:34.320 --> 00:11:36.720
I just it just occurred to me.
00:11:36.720 --> 00:11:40.320
So how many percent 55% OTB.
00:11:40.320 --> 00:11:40.799
Yeah.
00:11:40.799 --> 00:11:42.639
53% on descent.
00:11:42.639 --> 00:11:47.600
So does that mean 47% of people crash going uphill?
00:11:48.080 --> 00:11:53.120
Or or flat or not I think it's I think it's probably I think it's probably not that steep.
00:11:53.120 --> 00:11:53.600
Yeah.
00:11:53.600 --> 00:11:55.679
Like like chill downhill.
00:11:55.679 --> 00:11:57.440
Have you ever crashed going uphill?
00:11:57.679 --> 00:11:58.080
I have.
00:11:58.320 --> 00:11:58.879
I have too.
00:11:58.879 --> 00:12:00.240
Technical climbing.
00:12:00.240 --> 00:12:08.080
Uh yeah, mine was sprinting up a hill, and I got too far over the front, and just the smallest thing stopped my front wheel, and I flipped right over the bar.
00:12:08.480 --> 00:12:11.679
You went over the bars uphill climbing, not on a not on a technical climb.
00:12:11.679 --> 00:12:12.399
Yep, uphill.
00:12:12.399 --> 00:12:13.200
No, I've never done that.
00:12:13.200 --> 00:12:14.320
Yeah, actually, I've never seen that.
00:12:14.320 --> 00:12:15.440
I didn't even know that was possible.
00:12:15.440 --> 00:12:16.080
It is.
00:12:16.080 --> 00:12:19.519
It's yeah, I've done it a long time ago, but I did it.
00:12:19.519 --> 00:12:25.039
So 53% on design, 64% were due to poor jump landings.
00:12:25.440 --> 00:12:25.759
Okay.
00:12:26.159 --> 00:12:32.879
And 75% were at speeds of 18.6 miles per hour or 30 kilometers per hour or faster.
00:12:33.200 --> 00:12:36.320
How many people you think listening to this right now are picturing all of these?
00:12:36.320 --> 00:12:48.480
Like I can as soon as you said poor jump landings, I pictured like three different ones that I've seen on like a fail Friday, you know, yeah, where they just land nose in and like nose wheelie for a while and then go over, you know.
00:12:48.639 --> 00:12:52.559
So total confirmation bias for me, because I'm I'm a timid rider.
00:12:52.559 --> 00:12:54.320
Yeah, I don't ride super fast.
00:12:54.320 --> 00:13:00.080
I would say that my skills um are above my my risk tolerance.
00:13:00.240 --> 00:13:00.480
Okay.
00:13:00.639 --> 00:13:02.000
So I can handle more than I'm doing.
00:13:02.000 --> 00:13:02.240
Yeah.
00:13:02.240 --> 00:13:03.440
Which you've got you've told me that too.
00:13:03.440 --> 00:13:04.320
Like you can do that.
00:13:04.480 --> 00:13:05.200
No ass, let's go.
00:13:05.200 --> 00:13:05.679
Yeah.
00:13:05.919 --> 00:13:09.200
I ride slower than I could, and I never ever jump.
00:13:09.440 --> 00:13:09.679
Okay.
00:13:09.840 --> 00:13:15.200
And this data tells me if you want to avoid or reduce the the percentage of chance that you're gonna actually crash.
00:13:15.440 --> 00:13:16.240
Keep doing what you're doing.
00:13:16.399 --> 00:13:17.919
Don't jump and don't ride fast.
00:13:17.919 --> 00:13:25.519
So just slow down a little bit and just reduce your jumps a little bit, and you will reduce the amount of time you can crash based on this analysis.
00:13:25.519 --> 00:13:29.600
I um I actually crashed in the parking lot of a supermarket.
00:13:29.840 --> 00:13:30.879
Oh, for fuck's sake, Dane.
00:13:30.879 --> 00:13:31.600
Yeah.
00:13:31.600 --> 00:13:42.159
I more recent, I don't know if I mentioned on the podcast before, but I was testing a bike up at Pivot, and I just got on it in their parking lot, and I crashed.
00:13:42.399 --> 00:13:44.559
You crashed like a test bike at the pivot headquarters?
00:13:45.440 --> 00:13:46.480
Right in front of the pivot people.
00:13:46.639 --> 00:13:47.120
Oh, perfect.
00:13:47.279 --> 00:13:48.320
Making made me feel great.
00:13:48.320 --> 00:13:49.519
Did you jack up the bike?
00:13:49.519 --> 00:13:50.080
Uh no.
00:13:50.080 --> 00:13:51.279
No, the bike was fine.
00:13:51.279 --> 00:13:53.759
I was fine, but it was embarrassing.
00:13:53.759 --> 00:13:55.679
My my pants got caught on the saddle.
00:13:55.919 --> 00:13:56.240
Oh.
00:13:56.559 --> 00:14:00.480
And so I went to get off and my pants got caught, and then I just fell over.
00:14:00.480 --> 00:14:02.960
Um, but yeah, yeah, I've crashed in a parking lot.
00:14:02.960 --> 00:14:06.320
So I don't know, I don't know if going slower helps.
00:14:06.879 --> 00:14:09.039
So all right.
00:14:09.039 --> 00:14:13.519
So um, you know, there's kind of a couple like aspects to getting back on the bike.
00:14:13.519 --> 00:14:16.399
I think I think maybe the the the most obvious one, maybe we should start.
00:14:16.399 --> 00:14:19.840
It's a little bit out of order here, so I'm gonna screw us up here, but I feel like this order is better.
00:14:19.840 --> 00:14:21.919
The first one is the physical aspect.
00:14:21.919 --> 00:14:22.399
Yeah.
00:14:22.399 --> 00:14:32.000
So um you obviously gotta get yourself to a place where you're strong enough, comfortable enough, not broken enough to go ride.
00:14:32.159 --> 00:14:32.960
Yeah, right.
00:14:33.360 --> 00:14:41.600
And and so, like, I would ask you, because I'm a big proponent of physical therapy, did you do any PT?
00:14:42.000 --> 00:14:43.759
Uh not for my collarbone.
00:14:43.759 --> 00:14:45.840
Uh it was pretty straightforward.
00:14:45.840 --> 00:14:55.679
And collarbones, notoriously, if you're not hurting your ligaments or your rotator or something like that, are pretty like they'll get back on the bike real quick.
00:14:55.679 --> 00:15:02.480
Um but when I broke my leg uh in half, uh, I definitely had PT quite a bit.
00:15:02.480 --> 00:15:06.320
And I was off the my my leg for so long.
00:15:06.320 --> 00:15:19.279
I recovered, I feel like it was maybe I want to say that was probably two to three months, and I was at a bike park and I remember going to Angel Fire and I wouldn't do the drops.
00:15:19.279 --> 00:15:26.559
Uh so that trip I rode but I didn't do the drops because I just didn't want that heavy impact on my leg.
00:15:26.559 --> 00:15:29.919
Uh, but I was back up and running pretty quick on that one.
00:15:29.919 --> 00:15:34.240
So and mentally not as timid as this one.
00:15:34.240 --> 00:15:44.240
And that's the interesting thing for me, trying to figure the difference out between breaking my leg in half in a race and then breaking collarbone and breaking my collarbone.
00:15:44.240 --> 00:15:46.080
Why is one affecting me more than the other?
00:15:46.080 --> 00:15:49.519
Have you had well first of all, you were you're a lot older now.
00:15:49.519 --> 00:15:52.320
It's not that I mean, it's six years.
00:15:52.320 --> 00:15:54.480
So 2020 versus 2025.
00:15:54.799 --> 00:15:56.320
Jesus, you broke your leg in 2020?
00:15:56.399 --> 00:15:56.559
Yeah.
00:15:56.559 --> 00:15:57.200
Wow, okay.
00:15:57.360 --> 00:15:57.919
Yeah.
00:15:57.919 --> 00:16:00.159
So But you are like an old man now.
00:16:00.159 --> 00:16:01.679
And you were super old.
00:16:01.679 --> 00:16:02.960
Like so old.
00:16:02.960 --> 00:16:03.919
How many injuries?
00:16:04.159 --> 00:16:06.320
Like what what are the major injuries you've had over your biking?
00:16:06.320 --> 00:16:11.120
I think we counted nine broken bones, which I don't think's that many.
00:16:11.120 --> 00:16:13.759
But I feel like those have all happened.
00:16:14.080 --> 00:16:15.840
For the record, like it pretty much is a lot.
00:16:15.919 --> 00:16:16.399
That's a lot.
00:16:16.399 --> 00:16:17.519
Not considering what I've done.
00:16:17.519 --> 00:16:18.639
Here's the crazy part.
00:16:18.639 --> 00:16:26.320
I raced at the national level at downhill and never hurt myself with no insurance, which I don't suggest anyone do.
00:16:26.320 --> 00:16:31.039
But I was young and didn't have insurance, and I was stupid racing all over the country.
00:16:31.039 --> 00:16:31.519
Right.
00:16:31.519 --> 00:16:33.440
Never, never hurt myself.
00:16:33.440 --> 00:16:35.840
And now that I have insurance, I keep hurting myself.
00:16:35.840 --> 00:16:38.720
So I don't know, maybe I should get rid of my insurance.
00:16:38.960 --> 00:16:40.960
I've had three major incidents.
00:16:40.960 --> 00:16:43.360
One of them last eight lasted eight years.
00:16:43.679 --> 00:16:44.480
Holy crap.
00:16:44.480 --> 00:16:46.240
That's a long, yeah, long time.
00:16:46.399 --> 00:16:47.840
Yeah, and I'll tell you how we oh ultimate.
00:16:48.080 --> 00:16:50.399
So I uh is that when you lost your penis?
00:16:51.840 --> 00:16:52.159
No.
00:16:52.559 --> 00:16:53.919
All right, was that a different time?
00:16:53.919 --> 00:16:56.159
Just for the record, I still have my penis.
00:16:56.159 --> 00:16:59.759
It's alive and well, working, functioning perfectly.
00:16:59.759 --> 00:17:00.639
No problems.
00:17:00.639 --> 00:17:02.639
I'm not even having to use any pills or anything.
00:17:02.639 --> 00:17:03.120
Everything's good.
00:17:03.120 --> 00:17:03.360
Okay.
00:17:03.360 --> 00:17:05.680
That song Detachable Penis just goes into my head.
00:17:05.680 --> 00:17:06.480
Yeah, that's perfect.
00:17:06.480 --> 00:17:06.960
Thank you for that.
00:17:06.960 --> 00:17:07.440
Yeah, sorry.
00:17:07.440 --> 00:17:08.000
Thank you for that.
00:17:08.000 --> 00:17:09.759
It wasn't far the injury, it wasn't far from there.
00:17:09.759 --> 00:17:10.640
It wasn't that yeah.
00:17:10.640 --> 00:17:11.680
Is this the spider?
00:17:11.680 --> 00:17:13.200
No, no, no, that's just that's not this.
00:17:13.200 --> 00:17:15.039
Well, so that's I guess that's another one.
00:17:15.039 --> 00:17:19.759
But like I broke it two of the two of the injuries that took me out weren't even on the bike.
00:17:19.759 --> 00:17:20.079
Yeah.
00:17:20.079 --> 00:17:29.440
Uh I broke a scaphoid um at Arapaho basin on a snowboard in the in the current terrain park trying to do shit on a snowboard.
00:17:29.440 --> 00:17:30.960
I have no business trying to do.
00:17:31.119 --> 00:17:32.000
What's a scaphoid?
00:17:32.079 --> 00:17:35.200
Is that it's like uh at your wrist here is a little bone like right there.
00:17:35.200 --> 00:17:35.759
Oh, okay.
00:17:35.920 --> 00:17:38.880
I was thinking it was something that you get up on to paint up high on a wall.
00:17:38.880 --> 00:17:40.400
Like a scaffolding.
00:17:40.640 --> 00:17:47.599
Yeah, I think it's pretty common when you put your hand down to catch yourself to either break your collarbone, but a lot of people also break their scaffold.
00:17:47.599 --> 00:17:47.920
Yeah.
00:17:47.920 --> 00:17:51.519
So now I snowboard with gloves that have uh wrist guards built into them.
00:17:51.519 --> 00:17:53.200
You can't tell, they just look like normal gloves.
00:17:53.440 --> 00:17:54.079
I have them too.
00:17:54.160 --> 00:17:59.759
They have uh like like um hard things inside, and then I just wrap the thing around the outside, and they're great.
00:17:59.759 --> 00:18:01.599
Uh love those gloves.
00:18:01.599 --> 00:18:06.880
Um, I also separated my shoulder like lifting weights, like doing overhead presses.
00:18:06.880 --> 00:18:07.200
Cool.
00:18:07.200 --> 00:18:12.160
That took me so so the scaphoid took me out for a couple months, ended up missing a 24-hour race.
00:18:12.160 --> 00:18:14.319
That's when I was doing a lot of those endurance races.
00:18:14.319 --> 00:18:22.319
Um, the shoulder took me out for like six months, but the really bad one I had, we were doing an urban ride down at U of A.
00:18:22.559 --> 00:18:22.880
Yeah.
00:18:23.440 --> 00:18:27.039
And and helped me out, you can help me with the mechanics of the bike.
00:18:27.039 --> 00:18:32.079
So there used to be rapid rise derailures, yes, which went the opposite way.
00:18:32.079 --> 00:18:33.519
The spring goes the other way.
00:18:33.519 --> 00:18:34.000
Yeah.
00:18:34.000 --> 00:18:45.440
So I was um on flat ground, okay, stood up to start sprinting, took two pedal strokes, and my derailure cable broke.
00:18:45.680 --> 00:18:46.000
Okay.
00:18:46.559 --> 00:18:51.440
And the tension on the pedal it was like the you know, I had it like all the way hard.
00:18:51.759 --> 00:18:54.640
So the a rapid rise would send it up to the easiest cog.
00:18:54.960 --> 00:18:56.480
So I lost all the tension in the pedal.
00:18:56.480 --> 00:18:57.039
Gotcha.
00:18:57.039 --> 00:18:59.519
And the handlebars turned.
00:18:59.519 --> 00:19:01.599
Holy shit, who built this bike?
00:19:01.839 --> 00:19:02.720
It was Trek.
00:19:03.200 --> 00:19:04.960
It was the Trek fuel.
00:19:04.960 --> 00:19:12.480
And the handlebars at a super high speed went right, I went over the bars and in and it impaled myself in the stomach with the bars.
00:19:12.640 --> 00:19:14.000
Oh, without bar ends on.
00:19:14.000 --> 00:19:15.119
Did you core sample?
00:19:15.279 --> 00:19:16.240
I didn't core sample.
00:19:16.240 --> 00:19:18.960
I had I had you know grips on or whatever, so I didn't I didn't core sample.
00:19:19.359 --> 00:19:20.079
Did it break the skin?
00:19:20.079 --> 00:19:20.720
Did it go through?
00:19:20.880 --> 00:19:23.039
I had a massive bruise, but it didn't break the skin.
00:19:23.039 --> 00:19:23.519
Okay.
00:19:23.519 --> 00:19:26.000
But it did injure my intestines.
00:19:26.000 --> 00:19:27.119
Holy crap, dude.
00:19:27.119 --> 00:19:32.720
And for eight years, we went through test after test after test after test after test trying to figure out what it was.
00:19:32.720 --> 00:19:34.960
Um, and I would throw up on every ride.
00:19:34.960 --> 00:19:35.680
Holy crap.
00:19:35.680 --> 00:19:40.319
I would start out, I'd get like a half mile in, I'd be like, uh throw up because my stomach was so upset.
00:19:40.319 --> 00:19:42.079
My stomach was distended, it was awful.
00:19:42.079 --> 00:19:44.240
I ended up having a partial colectomy.
00:19:44.240 --> 00:19:48.880
They cut part of my colon out and put it all back together, and now I'm fine.
00:19:48.880 --> 00:19:50.799
Holy crap, dude.
00:19:51.279 --> 00:19:51.759
Wow.
00:19:51.759 --> 00:19:53.200
You have the weirdest shit.
00:19:53.440 --> 00:19:57.359
Eight years of my eight years of my riding career was uh like throwing up every river.
00:19:57.359 --> 00:19:58.319
Throwing up every ride.
00:19:58.319 --> 00:20:00.160
Not not every ride, but like most rides.
00:20:00.160 --> 00:20:02.240
God, I'm surprised you're still riding after that.
00:20:02.319 --> 00:20:04.000
That's that's that's that's dedication.
00:20:04.000 --> 00:20:05.759
That's that's like classical training.
00:20:05.759 --> 00:20:12.000
Like if every time you get on a bike you throw up, like that would train you not to like biking.
00:20:12.000 --> 00:20:15.119
So I'm surprised you don't still do it.
00:20:15.279 --> 00:20:15.599
Yeah.
00:20:15.599 --> 00:20:22.720
So um, okay, but I haven't had I did fall off a small ledge out at Colossal Cave.
00:20:22.880 --> 00:20:23.200
Okay.
00:20:23.680 --> 00:20:28.160
Um, I didn't get hurt, I got scraped up and all that kind of stuff, but it definitely spooked me.
00:20:28.160 --> 00:20:33.359
And so when we get into the mental part, yeah, um, we can talk about that because it took me a while to get my mojo back.
00:20:33.359 --> 00:20:44.480
Um but uh I I think huge advocate of like you know, getting medical attention, following the advice of your doctors, following through with physical uh therapy.
00:20:44.480 --> 00:20:45.920
I think it makes a huge difference.
00:20:45.920 --> 00:20:51.279
I honestly think for your broken collarbone, you should have gone and got PT as well because your muscles atrophy.
00:20:51.279 --> 00:20:54.400
Yeah, and you could have built it back up and helped you be stronger faster.
00:20:54.400 --> 00:20:55.359
I don't know what do you think.
00:20:55.599 --> 00:21:13.359
Well, so with my leg, uh I had an e-bike and I definitely needed that e-bike to get back on the bike and start uh because it had definitely I I was on the couch for over a month, you know, and then I had was in a boot for quite a while, a little knee scooter.
00:21:13.359 --> 00:21:15.759
I was gonna ask you if you use a knee scooter around the shop.
00:21:15.759 --> 00:21:17.440
Yeah, I had a Chris King headset in it.
00:21:17.440 --> 00:21:17.839
Of course.
00:21:17.839 --> 00:21:19.119
Yeah, ESI grips.
00:21:19.119 --> 00:21:19.599
It was awesome.
00:21:20.559 --> 00:21:21.920
Did you have uh i-9 hubs on it?
00:21:22.400 --> 00:21:25.039
No, no, unfortunately it was not that nice.
00:21:25.039 --> 00:21:31.359
Um, but then uh yeah, so uh the e-bike was really instrumental because I could set the power.
00:21:31.359 --> 00:21:35.759
Uh at first I had it at full power just because my leg just didn't want to work.
00:21:35.759 --> 00:21:36.000
Yep.
00:21:36.000 --> 00:21:41.759
And then I could build up pretty quickly to getting back to having leg strength in both legs.
00:21:41.759 --> 00:21:44.160
Uh so that was really instrumental.
00:21:44.160 --> 00:21:49.359
The collarbone, like I said, it happened so quick and I recovered pretty quick.
00:21:49.359 --> 00:21:51.759
Um, my rotator cuff is the other one.
00:21:51.759 --> 00:21:53.200
I had a torn rotator cuff.
00:21:53.200 --> 00:22:01.920
I was practicing downhill and here in Tucson, and I went down a trail and I same thing, I I went around a corner leaning.
00:22:01.920 --> 00:22:07.599
The front wheel was I was pushing off of a rock to make the corner, and that rock rolled.
00:22:07.599 --> 00:22:11.839
So my front wheel just swoop swoop swipe.
00:22:11.839 --> 00:22:13.200
Swoop?
00:22:13.200 --> 00:22:13.680
Swept.
00:22:13.680 --> 00:22:14.559
Swept swept.
00:22:14.559 --> 00:22:15.119
There we go.
00:22:15.119 --> 00:22:16.000
Swept.
00:22:16.000 --> 00:22:17.920
That was way hard.
00:22:18.160 --> 00:22:19.599
You were like stuck in a loop there for a second.
00:22:19.599 --> 00:22:23.920
Wait, your face is drooping, bro.
00:22:24.559 --> 00:22:32.640
So anyway, my my uh wheel swept out from under me and my shoulder again went straight into the ground and I hit a rock with it.
00:22:32.640 --> 00:22:41.839
And uh I think at that impact, uh we were probably nine miles out, and so I needed to go nine more miles.
00:22:41.839 --> 00:22:50.160
That impact I think cracked my um upper, what do you call is this uh upper your upper muscle bone?
00:22:50.480 --> 00:22:51.920
The bone in the upper part of your arm.
00:22:52.400 --> 00:22:55.359
You got your ulna and your radius, and what's your upper one?
00:22:55.359 --> 00:22:57.759
Your it's not a femur, that's your leg.
00:22:57.759 --> 00:22:58.640
I don't know.
00:22:58.640 --> 00:23:01.039
Anyway, the upper bone, your body between your elbow and your bowl.
00:23:01.039 --> 00:23:02.480
Your biceps bone, whatever that bone is.
00:23:02.480 --> 00:23:03.519
Between your elbow and your shoulder.
00:23:03.519 --> 00:23:04.799
Not a not a physician.
00:23:04.799 --> 00:23:07.920
Um so anyway, uh cracked it like down.
00:23:07.920 --> 00:23:12.160
Uh fracture, fractured, down, uh, so like split it.
00:23:12.160 --> 00:23:15.200
It was like splitting it from the top down, like you would split a log.
00:23:15.200 --> 00:23:17.279
And then um didn't know it.
00:23:17.279 --> 00:23:36.480
I knew it was hurt, but I didn't know it, and then started to ride down the hill because it was getting dark, yeah, and I had to get out nine miles, and this trail was so rudded that I remember it pulled me to one side and yanked my shoulder, and that's when I think I tore my rotator.
00:23:36.480 --> 00:23:37.920
And then I ended up walking out.
00:23:37.920 --> 00:23:39.440
We walked out at nine o'clock at night.
00:23:39.680 --> 00:23:42.079
So you had a torn rotator and a rotator.
00:23:42.559 --> 00:23:53.680
I think, and this is just a theory, but because of just me knowing how much pain I was in before and then after, I'm pretty sure if I would have just walked and not been a dumbass, you wouldn't have the torn rotator.
00:23:53.680 --> 00:23:55.359
I wouldn't have had the torn rotator.
00:23:55.359 --> 00:23:57.759
And the torn rotator took me over six months.
00:23:57.759 --> 00:23:58.240
Jesus.
00:23:58.240 --> 00:24:00.799
Uh, and that one needed lots of therapy.
00:24:00.799 --> 00:24:11.039
That one, you no joke, like just getting my range of motion, being able to sleep on that side, yeah, uh, and and put my arm above my head took years.
00:24:11.039 --> 00:24:14.160
So so some of these injuries can take you a long, long time.
00:24:14.480 --> 00:24:16.559
Did you use what what did you use for pain management?
00:24:16.559 --> 00:24:18.880
Do you do you take all the narcotic shit?
00:24:19.279 --> 00:24:20.400
No, I'm not into it at all.
00:24:20.400 --> 00:24:23.440
If I take ibuprofen, then I gotta really be hurting.
00:24:23.440 --> 00:24:24.880
So I it's so funny, man.
00:24:24.880 --> 00:24:31.519
I would I would have bottles of Percocet and Micodin and stuff sitting around that just they'll expire because I just don't take them.
00:24:31.519 --> 00:24:35.279
I do have this weird weirdness about me.
00:24:35.279 --> 00:24:37.279
Pain doesn't affect me the same way.
00:24:37.279 --> 00:24:45.440
Uh like if I touch, if I just put my finger on my wife, sometimes she acts like I am just like drilling a hole into her.
00:24:45.440 --> 00:24:47.200
She's super sensitive, you know.
00:24:47.200 --> 00:24:50.319
And then don't take that to the wrong place.
00:24:50.319 --> 00:24:52.640
I'm sorry, don't do that to my wife.
00:24:52.640 --> 00:24:54.319
This is a real thing.
00:24:54.319 --> 00:24:56.880
Sorry, just stop it.
00:24:56.880 --> 00:24:57.440
Let's come back.
00:24:57.440 --> 00:24:57.839
Let's come back.
00:24:57.839 --> 00:24:58.160
Calm down.
00:24:58.160 --> 00:24:58.799
Let's bring it down.
00:24:58.799 --> 00:24:59.279
Calm down.
00:24:59.279 --> 00:25:03.920
Anyway, there's some people that are really, really like sensitive to pain.
00:25:03.920 --> 00:25:04.720
I'm not.
00:25:04.720 --> 00:25:10.960
And I I will get done with a ride and I'll be bleeding for my legs because I hit like a cat claw, you know, like bush.
00:25:10.960 --> 00:25:11.279
Uh-huh.
00:25:11.279 --> 00:25:15.039
Right now I'm bleeding because I scratched one of your bones.
00:25:15.039 --> 00:25:15.759
Yeah.
00:25:15.759 --> 00:25:17.440
Um, and I don't feel it.
00:25:17.440 --> 00:25:20.880
When I broke my leg in half, I was just the happiest, cheeriest guy.
00:25:20.880 --> 00:25:26.880
Like there's pictures of me just laughing and joking in the hospital in the in the ambulance getting taken out.
00:25:26.880 --> 00:25:28.799
They had to take me on a stretcher.
00:25:28.799 --> 00:25:34.000
Uh, six people had to stretcher me out of that race because I was in a canyon, you know.
00:25:34.240 --> 00:25:34.559
Right.
00:25:34.720 --> 00:25:40.160
And I am cracking jokes while they're trying not to like drop me down the canyon, you know.
00:25:40.160 --> 00:25:50.559
And and I wasn't on any drugs, you know, it was adrenaline and just I just don't have the same pain receptors, you know, which which becomes a bad thing because I don't always know I'm in pain.
00:25:50.720 --> 00:25:56.480
So well, I I uh you know, when I was in the military, I was trained how to deal with it.
00:25:56.480 --> 00:25:57.599
Yeah, deal with pain out.
00:25:57.599 --> 00:25:58.240
Suck it up.
00:25:58.240 --> 00:26:01.279
Yeah, I'll just I won't go into details there, get myself in trouble.
00:26:01.279 --> 00:26:03.680
But um, but I'd feel it for sure.
00:26:03.680 --> 00:26:03.920
Yeah.
00:26:03.920 --> 00:26:10.559
And like after my stomach, and I was when I was recuperating, um I think it was about day two.
00:26:10.559 --> 00:26:16.720
No, it's like day three, and I didn't have any pain, but I had this feeling like it's time to take my medicine.
00:26:16.720 --> 00:26:18.480
Yeah, like go take your medicine, Josh.
00:26:18.480 --> 00:26:20.079
And I'm like, wait a minute, I don't have any pain.
00:26:20.240 --> 00:26:20.799
Oh, yeah, yeah.
00:26:20.880 --> 00:26:27.039
And I'm like, holy shit, I've only been taking this a couple days, and I'm already feeling like the withdrawal or like the like the the addiction.
00:26:27.039 --> 00:26:28.000
Addiction, yeah.
00:26:28.000 --> 00:26:31.200
So I just took that bottle and dumped it right into the toilet, flushed it, and like I'm done.
00:26:31.200 --> 00:26:32.960
I'm doing this with ibuprofen from here on out.
00:26:33.279 --> 00:26:37.119
Yeah, I mean, even ibuprofen I won't take unless I have to, really have to.
00:26:37.359 --> 00:26:40.240
Yeah, we we called that vitamin M in the military, Motrin.
00:26:40.240 --> 00:26:40.559
Yeah.
00:26:40.559 --> 00:26:42.079
And like we take it, we took it all the time.
00:26:42.079 --> 00:26:44.160
I I take it a couple times a year if I have something.
00:26:44.160 --> 00:26:45.279
I I wouldn't shy away from it.
00:26:45.359 --> 00:26:46.960
It doesn't scare me, but whatever it takes.
00:26:46.960 --> 00:26:55.839
I mean, I know uh when after I broke my collarbone, I remember being at the cabin and everybody going through their their to see what we had.
00:26:55.839 --> 00:26:59.359
To see what they had, and I think somebody had Viking in their percocet with them.
00:26:59.680 --> 00:27:00.720
You don't remember what you guys did?
00:27:00.720 --> 00:27:01.680
I don't even remember.
00:27:01.680 --> 00:27:03.359
So you guys went for a drive.
00:27:04.000 --> 00:27:04.880
Went for a drive.
00:27:05.119 --> 00:27:08.000
And you went to a special store.
00:27:08.000 --> 00:27:08.640
No, no.
00:27:08.640 --> 00:27:09.680
Yes, you did.
00:27:09.680 --> 00:27:11.599
Yes, you absolutely did.
00:27:11.599 --> 00:27:14.799
In Angel Fire after my Yes.
00:27:15.920 --> 00:27:17.839
Wow, I don't remember that at all.
00:27:17.839 --> 00:27:19.759
Really?
00:27:19.759 --> 00:27:22.160
Oh shit, I do.
00:27:22.160 --> 00:27:22.640
I do.
00:27:22.640 --> 00:27:24.000
Okay, I do remember that.
00:27:24.000 --> 00:27:25.359
Okay, yes, I do.
00:27:25.359 --> 00:27:25.839
Wow.
00:27:25.839 --> 00:27:27.200
I blocked that shit out.
00:27:27.200 --> 00:27:28.480
So wow.
00:27:28.480 --> 00:27:30.000
Yes, and that's how I slept.
00:27:30.000 --> 00:27:30.319
Yes.
00:27:30.319 --> 00:27:30.720
So yes.
00:27:30.880 --> 00:27:32.160
Because you're like, I gotta get something to sleep.
00:27:32.400 --> 00:27:32.880
Yes, yeah.
00:27:33.039 --> 00:27:33.599
And you guys left.
00:27:33.599 --> 00:27:34.559
I said, I can't go with you.
00:27:35.599 --> 00:27:37.759
I I thought, yeah, and I needed it for the drive home.
00:27:37.759 --> 00:27:38.079
Yeah.
00:27:38.079 --> 00:27:38.559
So yeah.
00:27:38.880 --> 00:27:39.440
You weren't driving.
00:27:39.680 --> 00:27:43.039
No, I I needed to be able to just not be miserable.
00:27:43.279 --> 00:27:53.039
And the funny thing is, is we had another guy with us there who was we had we had three broken people that we had we had we had Babyfoot who was there from a previous accident.
00:27:53.359 --> 00:27:56.880
He was there just in spirit because he had broken his collarbone like a month earlier.
00:27:57.119 --> 00:27:59.119
Like he did the shuttle when we rode the Windsor Trail.
00:27:59.119 --> 00:28:08.480
By the way, if you if you do go to Angel Fire and you're coming from the south and you go through Santa Fe, or if you're in the Santa Fe area, yeah, like go ride the Windsor, W-I-N-S-O-R.
00:28:08.480 --> 00:28:10.000
Yeah, go ride the Windsor Trail.
00:28:10.000 --> 00:28:11.039
It's a shuttle ride trail.
00:28:11.039 --> 00:28:11.279
Yeah.
00:28:11.279 --> 00:28:11.920
Fantastic.
00:28:12.160 --> 00:28:12.559
Awesome.
00:28:12.559 --> 00:28:19.440
And then, yeah, and then um DJ broke, or he didn't break his, he just strained his rotator or something.
00:28:19.440 --> 00:28:21.680
Something a tendon, but he was in a sling.
00:28:21.920 --> 00:28:25.839
His crash was violent, yeah, but happened like at the bottom.
00:28:25.839 --> 00:28:26.079
Yeah.
00:28:26.079 --> 00:28:28.240
Just on the just like right at the bottom of the lift.
00:28:28.319 --> 00:28:28.640
Oh, really?
00:28:28.799 --> 00:28:31.200
Yeah, he was just hauling ass and just wadded it up.
00:28:31.200 --> 00:28:32.079
Just skidded out.
00:28:32.079 --> 00:28:33.440
Yeah, he just lost traction and went down.
00:28:33.599 --> 00:28:34.720
So yeah, there's three of us.
00:28:34.720 --> 00:28:37.440
Three, three bro out of like what, seven?
00:28:37.440 --> 00:28:39.519
Uh we had two full cabins, so I think it was ten.
00:28:39.519 --> 00:28:40.160
Ten, okay.
00:28:40.400 --> 00:28:43.359
So thirty percent crack thirty percent broken rate on that trip.
00:28:43.680 --> 00:28:46.319
That was a pretty I didn't I didn't think about it that way.
00:28:46.319 --> 00:29:03.759
So so uh, you know, you you break yourself, um, you physically have to get better, whether that is like surgery, which I've had a few times, uh, the um the uh physical therapy afterwards, yeah, then the building back up.
00:29:03.759 --> 00:29:07.680
You have to build your muscles, your muscles back up to the level.
00:29:07.680 --> 00:29:13.759
I think the pro riders are just amazing at this, how fast they get back to a pro level, you know.
00:29:13.759 --> 00:29:15.920
And then uh, you know, the mental aspect.
00:29:15.920 --> 00:29:18.559
I would say the mental is probably my my hardest.
00:29:19.039 --> 00:29:20.880
So um one more thing on the physical thing.
00:29:20.880 --> 00:29:27.119
My buddy does the BCP 157 warrior stack, which is a peptide injection.
00:29:27.359 --> 00:29:27.519
Okay.
00:29:27.920 --> 00:29:32.000
To so he plays soccer, he rides with us, he crashes.
00:29:32.000 --> 00:29:34.240
I think he's riding, he's been crashing a lot lately.
00:29:34.240 --> 00:29:36.079
Like every time I ride with him, he crashes.
00:29:36.079 --> 00:29:38.319
So I think he's like riding ahead of his skills a little bit.
00:29:38.319 --> 00:29:39.839
So I gotta like tell him to like dial about that.
00:29:40.160 --> 00:29:44.960
Like maybe his fitness level is his fitness level's good, outdoing his bike handling skills.
00:29:44.960 --> 00:29:46.720
That's exactly right.
00:29:46.799 --> 00:29:48.960
He's he's a relatively new, he was a roadie convert.
00:29:48.960 --> 00:29:57.359
Um, so he's crashing a lot, but he's been doing the warrior stack and just just um just raving about how quickly it heals stuff for him.
00:29:57.359 --> 00:30:05.279
But I have seen some stuff recently, and and I guess if our listeners have any perspective or any real knowledge here, we'd love you to to comment and let us know.
00:30:05.279 --> 00:30:12.480
But like um, I guess this stack works, and one of the things it does is help build capillaries faster and get more blood to the area, and that's why it heals so fast.
00:30:12.480 --> 00:30:14.160
But it can actually do that with cancer as well.
00:30:14.160 --> 00:30:16.480
If you have cancer, it can like accelerate the cancer.
00:30:16.640 --> 00:30:16.960
Yeah.
00:30:17.119 --> 00:30:19.039
So I'm a little nervous, I've never tried it.
00:30:19.039 --> 00:30:20.240
Um, yeah, yeah.
00:30:20.240 --> 00:30:28.960
I guess if our listeners are using it and you guys have good experience, and if you're got you know medical uh education, you know about it medically, let us know what you think about that BCP 157.
00:30:29.200 --> 00:30:32.559
Yeah, and I would say just a good advice is listen to your doctor, you know.
00:30:32.799 --> 00:30:33.519
Yeah, listen to your doctor.
00:30:33.759 --> 00:30:34.480
Probably the way to go.
00:30:34.480 --> 00:30:37.039
If you want to take it past that, just be careful.
00:30:37.359 --> 00:30:38.799
Do you know who my doctor is?
00:30:39.039 --> 00:30:39.920
I don't know, dude.
00:30:40.240 --> 00:30:41.200
He's also my best friend.
00:30:41.440 --> 00:30:42.160
Oh, oh.
00:30:42.160 --> 00:30:45.839
Then I do know who he is.
00:30:45.839 --> 00:30:48.079
Yeah, oh my God.
00:30:48.799 --> 00:30:49.519
Do you know okay?
00:30:49.519 --> 00:30:50.640
So we're gonna get into the mental side.
00:30:50.640 --> 00:30:52.559
Do you know there's a there's a word for this?
00:30:52.559 --> 00:30:54.799
For for fear of injury.
00:30:54.799 --> 00:30:55.920
FOMO?
00:30:55.920 --> 00:30:56.319
No.
00:30:56.319 --> 00:30:58.160
No, that's where we're missing out.
00:30:58.160 --> 00:31:00.480
It's kinesiophobia.
00:31:00.480 --> 00:31:01.680
Kinesiophobia.
00:31:01.920 --> 00:31:04.000
Okay, and that's so that's where my brain is right now.
00:31:04.400 --> 00:31:05.359
Kineseophobia.
00:31:05.359 --> 00:31:17.680
You are you had this fear, yeah, and so it's it's causing and it's interesting, like when I do crash, more times than not, it's when I don't commit to the when I don't commit to the feature.
00:31:17.680 --> 00:31:19.119
Yeah, right, because I'm I'm scared.
00:31:19.279 --> 00:31:19.440
Yeah.
00:31:19.599 --> 00:31:24.480
So it's like that fear causes me not to commit, which then causes me to crash more often.
00:31:24.720 --> 00:31:25.119
Yeah.
00:31:25.119 --> 00:31:33.759
So so um my dilemma, you know, being coming back faster after my leg than with this wall ride.
00:31:33.759 --> 00:31:44.319
And I was uh, you know, I think with the leg, I I feel I have a very good beat of what happened and how it happened.
00:31:44.319 --> 00:31:48.559
In fact, afterwards, so on that basically I was following a pro down.
00:31:48.559 --> 00:31:50.000
He was showing me a faster line.
00:31:50.160 --> 00:31:50.559
Yeah.
00:31:50.799 --> 00:32:01.279
I got he showed me a very fast line and I went through a section and I doubled it and went through this section much faster than I had been in practice.
00:32:01.279 --> 00:32:02.640
Because you doubled it.
00:32:02.640 --> 00:32:08.799
Because yeah, his line had me doubling a section instead of just sucking up this this mogul kind of a mogul area.
00:32:08.799 --> 00:32:09.119
Yeah.
00:32:09.119 --> 00:32:15.599
And as I came around a corner, I since I was going faster, I couldn't set up for the line I had always practiced.
00:32:15.599 --> 00:32:21.359
I got set up uh the as you come around this corner, it's kind of open almost like a double track, but they're ruts.
00:32:21.359 --> 00:32:29.839
And so they're two different distinct rights, uh, one on the left, one on the right, and there was this rock knoll in the middle of them.
00:32:29.839 --> 00:32:39.119
And so, and normally I would go to the left, right, and I would basically go around and then set up inside to take the next left.
00:32:39.119 --> 00:32:40.880
Um, and it was slower.
00:32:40.880 --> 00:32:43.200
Uh, I knew that, but it was clean.
00:32:43.200 --> 00:32:49.680
And this mogul uh double that I did had me set up to the right instead of the left.
00:32:49.680 --> 00:32:53.279
Instead of the left, and my pedal caught that knoll.
00:32:53.279 --> 00:32:53.920
Oh no.
00:32:53.920 --> 00:33:00.240
And basically it's almost immediately stopped the bike while I went forward and my gut hits the bars.
00:33:00.240 --> 00:33:01.359
Are you clipped in now?
00:33:01.359 --> 00:33:01.680
Are you?
00:33:01.680 --> 00:33:02.880
No, no, I'm a flat guy.
00:33:02.880 --> 00:33:11.759
And uh my leg basically slipped off the right pedal, went down into the rut underneath the bike.
00:33:11.759 --> 00:33:20.240
The bike's kind of stopped at this point, and now the rut is deep, and so the rut comes up about uh upper calf high.
00:33:20.559 --> 00:33:21.039
Right, right.
00:33:21.279 --> 00:33:24.079
And um And you and your body's still moving.
00:33:24.079 --> 00:33:25.279
No, no, no.
00:33:25.279 --> 00:33:28.240
Um my body had kind of stopped because the bike stopped me.
00:33:28.240 --> 00:33:30.240
I mean, it was really abrupt.
00:33:30.240 --> 00:33:39.759
And but then I fell over and the bike was pinning my leg against the uh rut.
00:33:39.759 --> 00:33:41.039
You've lost our listeners, I think.
00:33:41.039 --> 00:33:41.359
I know.
00:33:41.359 --> 00:33:46.240
And so basically it literally folded my leg in half, uh sideways.
00:33:46.240 --> 00:33:49.200
Uh not not front to back, but sideways.
00:33:49.359 --> 00:33:51.200
And and this was your femur?
00:33:51.359 --> 00:33:52.160
Uh yeah, Tibfib.
00:33:52.160 --> 00:33:52.880
Tibfib.
00:33:52.880 --> 00:33:53.440
Yeah.
00:33:53.440 --> 00:33:56.559
And femur, not not my femur, thank god, because those are worse.
00:33:56.559 --> 00:33:56.720
Yeah.
00:33:56.720 --> 00:33:57.839
Uh Tibfib.
00:33:57.839 --> 00:34:00.880
They called it a spiral, like uh parachuters.
00:34:00.880 --> 00:34:02.799
I guess parachuters when they land.
00:34:02.799 --> 00:34:03.519
Get that a lot.
00:34:03.519 --> 00:34:04.400
Get it a lot.
00:34:04.400 --> 00:34:09.360
And uh it was real high on the t on the fibia and really low on the tibia.
00:34:09.599 --> 00:34:10.960
Oh, interesting, because they're not connected.
00:34:11.119 --> 00:34:11.360
Yeah.
00:34:11.519 --> 00:34:11.840
Okay.
00:34:12.159 --> 00:34:18.320
And so um that that series of events I've analyzed.
00:34:18.320 --> 00:34:19.679
I can go look at that rock.
00:34:19.679 --> 00:34:23.199
I have pictures of that rock, I have video of that rock.
00:34:23.199 --> 00:34:27.840
Um I knew exactly what happened, you know, and it was a mistake I made.
00:34:27.840 --> 00:34:28.960
I picked a wrong line.
00:34:28.960 --> 00:34:37.360
Yeah, and for probably a good year, I had a real problem with any kind of trail where my pedals got near rocks.
00:34:37.360 --> 00:34:39.760
So I did have a lot of mental issues there.
00:34:39.760 --> 00:34:46.079
So if the trail was wide open, if I was at at a a bike park where I was just doing jumps and stuff like that, it wasn't an issue.
00:34:46.079 --> 00:34:52.559
But if I got into a rocky section where my pedal could clip a rock and have the same thing happen, it did freak me out.
00:34:52.559 --> 00:35:00.320
Um that wall ride, I think, messes with me because I still a hundred percent don't know.
00:35:00.320 --> 00:35:03.760
Like I did in my brain everything right.
00:35:03.760 --> 00:35:09.199
I I wasn't making a mistake, I didn't hit that jump to hit the wall wrong.
00:35:09.199 --> 00:35:12.079
I I wasn't going any higher than I normally did.
00:35:12.079 --> 00:35:13.920
I wasn't doing anything wrong.
00:35:13.920 --> 00:35:18.880
Like physically, I did everything I did all weekend and I slammed to the ground.
00:35:18.880 --> 00:35:26.719
And I that somehow has messed my brain up because my brain is now going, you can do everything right and still break your collarbone.
00:35:26.719 --> 00:35:29.039
And I think that's what I'm trying to figure out.
00:35:29.280 --> 00:35:34.719
So I would say that there's probably something in the fact that you are X number of decades old.
00:35:34.719 --> 00:35:36.400
Um brittle, super brittle.
00:35:36.400 --> 00:35:38.000
You shouldn't be doing wall rides.
00:35:38.000 --> 00:35:39.519
Yeah, I mean, there could be that.
00:35:39.519 --> 00:35:44.559
Super brittle, especially not in a hill storm, over top of someone at a high speed.
00:35:44.559 --> 00:35:45.360
I think at night.
00:35:45.599 --> 00:35:49.119
Yeah, I I gotta get in it in my head that the it was the traction.
00:35:49.119 --> 00:35:56.000
So, and then, you know, this mental game, you know, dealing with the mental, trying to overcome your demons, you know, those are the hardest things.
00:35:56.000 --> 00:36:02.079
So a lot of people will tell you, just get back on the bike, just go do it and and build your confidence, which is what I've been doing.
00:36:02.079 --> 00:36:10.880
But man, I you know, in our whistler episode, I just noted how as soon as I saw that wood, I was like, uh, I just clenched.
00:36:10.880 --> 00:36:12.159
I it's it's amazing.
00:36:12.159 --> 00:36:13.360
I did it's it's amazing.
00:36:13.360 --> 00:36:14.000
I just wait.
00:36:14.000 --> 00:36:14.480
Yeah.
00:36:14.639 --> 00:36:16.000
As soon as you saw the wood, you clenched.
00:36:16.239 --> 00:36:16.400
Yes.
00:36:16.400 --> 00:36:17.360
I'm just yes.
00:36:17.360 --> 00:36:18.719
You use that however you want.
00:36:18.960 --> 00:36:20.079
I'm gonna take that clip and use it.
00:36:20.079 --> 00:36:21.119
Just put it in our property.
00:36:21.119 --> 00:36:23.440
As soon as I saw that wood, I clenched.
00:36:24.719 --> 00:36:25.519
Oh man.
00:36:25.519 --> 00:36:27.280
Uh so dirty.
00:36:27.280 --> 00:36:32.000
Um, but yeah, I I you know, so so that's the mental aspect.
00:36:32.000 --> 00:36:33.440
So you got the physical.
00:36:33.440 --> 00:36:33.840
Okay.
00:36:33.840 --> 00:36:40.239
So if we get back online, because we've been talking about this, and we haven't really kind of dived into our outline.
00:36:40.239 --> 00:36:42.079
So really we've talked about mental.
00:36:42.400 --> 00:36:43.440
We talked about the physical.
00:36:43.440 --> 00:36:44.000
Physical.
00:36:44.000 --> 00:36:45.519
Yeah, you gotta get yourself back on.
00:36:45.519 --> 00:36:47.280
We talked about kinesiophobia.
00:36:47.280 --> 00:36:47.599
Yep.
00:36:47.599 --> 00:36:49.679
It says, hey, a fear of injury.
00:36:50.000 --> 00:37:07.360
I think you know, what what do you think is so so the first ride back, you know, like one of the things that I did was I started to just somebody gave me really good advice, and I don't remember who it was, if it was you or I couldn't tell you who it was.
00:37:07.679 --> 00:37:08.320
Probably wasn't me.
00:37:08.800 --> 00:37:10.000
But it was good advice.
00:37:10.000 --> 00:37:12.719
I think it may have been Justin, I'm not sure.
00:37:12.719 --> 00:37:19.760
Um, but I was explaining that I'm having this problem, and they told me to start riding trails that I don't normally ride.
00:37:19.760 --> 00:37:24.239
And it kind of clicked really well with me.
00:37:24.239 --> 00:37:27.280
Like basically, don't go.
00:37:27.280 --> 00:37:45.679
What one of the problems that I was having is I would go back to a trail I'm used to, and I wouldn't do what you used to I couldn't do what I used to do, I would be frustrated, it would weigh on my mind, you know, obstacles that I had to walk because my mind wasn't set, yeah, where all of a sudden it was creating frustration and angry.
00:37:46.079 --> 00:37:47.199
Because you're like I've ridden this a hundred times.
00:37:47.280 --> 00:37:48.719
Why the hell am I walking this right now?
00:37:48.719 --> 00:37:50.400
And so I forgot who this person was.
00:37:50.719 --> 00:37:52.320
That wasn't me, but uh it's an interesting idea.
00:37:52.559 --> 00:38:02.400
Yeah, they said don't go ride a trailer you're used to, ride something different, because then if you walk a section, it's not you don't have a basis of your skill level or anything.
00:38:02.400 --> 00:38:05.360
And um, and that was really to me good advice.
00:38:05.360 --> 00:38:13.039
So I started riding more cross country, a little bit more um, you know, aerobic, less so you say more cross country, right?
00:38:13.119 --> 00:38:14.480
So like that was where my head was at.
00:38:14.480 --> 00:38:14.800
Yeah.
00:38:14.800 --> 00:38:20.639
What I've done when I've been coming back is like like kind of dial down the technical nature of the trails I'm riding.
00:38:20.639 --> 00:38:20.960
Yeah.
00:38:20.960 --> 00:38:21.840
Start slow.
00:38:21.840 --> 00:38:25.440
Yeah, choose like you have in your notes here, choose an easier trail to start with.
00:38:25.599 --> 00:38:26.400
Yes, exactly.
00:38:26.639 --> 00:38:28.559
And then uh I don't know.
00:38:28.559 --> 00:38:37.280
I was riding last night in our we have uh uh our Tuesday night ride, and we had a new guy with us last night who's been off the bike for a long time.
00:38:37.280 --> 00:38:44.719
And he comes out with a specialized enduro that he just picked up, he used one, and he was dog and up the hills like so slow.
00:38:44.719 --> 00:38:48.320
But then on the downhill, he was just lightning.
00:38:48.320 --> 00:38:56.719
Yeah, and you could tell that he had grown up doing Moto, he grew up uh racing BMX, you could tell he just had those skills, like he was just so fast around the corners and everything.
00:38:56.719 --> 00:38:57.760
It was amazing watching him.
00:38:57.760 --> 00:39:04.960
And like I'm struggling to keep up with him on the downhill, and I just kept saying to my head, like slow is fast, slow is fast.
00:39:04.960 --> 00:39:14.239
Like I think I gotta get my turns faster, and I need to go out and just ride slow and just really focus on the technique and then dial up the speed, dial up the speed, dial up the speed, dial up the speed.
00:39:14.239 --> 00:39:17.119
And it feels like this would be the same approach I take if I got hurt again.
00:39:17.119 --> 00:39:27.519
Yeah, it's like slow is fast, like just get out there, pedal, get around the trail, yeah, take it easy, don't don't beat yourself up, you know, shorter ride to start and then build.
00:39:27.679 --> 00:39:28.000
Yeah.
00:39:28.159 --> 00:39:28.400
Right?
00:39:28.639 --> 00:39:31.599
Yeah, uh one of the other things is uh session.
00:39:31.599 --> 00:39:37.760
So session is something that uh, you know, people will say, I'm sure everybody listening is like, oh yeah, I session.
00:39:37.840 --> 00:39:40.239
But I don't know that everyone knows that term.
00:39:40.239 --> 00:39:43.119
Okay, so so especially people that are not gravity riders.
00:39:43.119 --> 00:39:44.400
So like what is sessioning?
00:39:44.719 --> 00:40:01.840
So sessioning is where you get to a technical area that is difficult that you're not confident on, and maybe you walk and stopping and taking the time to go back and forth and either try and ride it, figure out the line, look at it, watch other riders, spend a little time.
00:40:01.840 --> 00:40:12.639
You know, sometimes we get in a hurry in our rides and we want to just do our loop or do our lap or do our run or whatever, and we don't stop and actually just session or ride to kind of look at the lines.
00:40:12.639 --> 00:40:14.880
In in downhill racing, we did this all the time.
00:40:14.880 --> 00:40:26.320
Where would you would ride your practice runs, but then you would switch who you rode behind and you would see what their run uh their lines were, and it would help you change your line choice.
00:40:26.320 --> 00:40:29.360
Otherwise, you just practice the same line, yeah.
00:40:29.360 --> 00:40:35.760
And so it'll help you kind of like fine-tune your speed and and knock off a few seconds or milliseconds or whatever it is.
00:40:35.760 --> 00:40:38.480
And uh, and so sessioning is part of that too.
00:40:38.480 --> 00:40:47.599
You'll watch some of the World Cup pro guys, they'll do a track walk, and a lot of what they're doing is just looking at the lines, which lines they can take, how they're gonna come into it.
00:40:47.599 --> 00:40:58.159
They'll they'll back up and kind of walk towards like a drop as if they're riding it, yeah, so they can see where they need to look when it may be a blind landing, you know.
00:40:58.159 --> 00:41:03.039
And so sessioning is something that I think I personally don't do enough.
00:41:03.039 --> 00:41:08.159
You know, I don't I don't stop and just kind of and and you and I did this when we did a ride not too long ago.
00:41:08.400 --> 00:41:09.840
You you're good at making me stop.
00:41:09.840 --> 00:41:12.480
Yeah because you're like, you know that there's something that I can ride.
00:41:12.480 --> 00:41:12.719
Yeah.
00:41:12.719 --> 00:41:16.400
And because you've seen me ride something similar, and then I I go to walk and you're like, uh uh.
00:41:16.400 --> 00:41:18.559
Yeah, get your ass back there, you're gonna ride this.
00:41:18.719 --> 00:41:22.000
Yeah, and and sometimes it just takes that doing it a couple times.
00:41:22.000 --> 00:41:26.400
Because when you come into it, you're more tired and you're less likely to want to take that time.
00:41:26.400 --> 00:41:36.800
But if you stop and take a second to catch your breath, especially if it's like an uphill technical, um, take your breath, kind of look at it, maybe watch a couple friends who can do it.
00:41:36.800 --> 00:41:40.320
Yeah, you know, uh, that's super helpful because you see where they go.
00:41:40.320 --> 00:41:53.760
And I will look at the rocks that they're hitting with their tires, and I will try and memorize which rocks their tires are going over so that when I come up, I'm looking at those because you're more likely to put your wheels where you're looking.
00:41:53.920 --> 00:42:00.480
So that technical section that you're talking about, basically every technical section out there now, yeah, I can clear I can clean it all.
00:42:00.639 --> 00:42:01.039
Yeah, yeah.
00:42:01.199 --> 00:42:01.840
I can ride it all.
00:42:02.000 --> 00:42:03.039
And and that that helps.
00:42:03.039 --> 00:42:05.519
So sessioning is one way that you can get over stuff.
00:42:05.679 --> 00:42:07.440
So I'm I mean, what about finally?
00:42:07.440 --> 00:42:17.840
So so you know, like um there's a there's an adage in gravity riding, uh, at least that like homegrown taught us uh at one of the clinics there, which was like pre-ride, ride, then free ride.
00:42:17.840 --> 00:42:19.519
So you ride it, you ride a trail three times.
00:42:19.599 --> 00:42:19.840
Yeah.
00:42:20.000 --> 00:42:24.559
The first time is a pre-ride, you're kind of checking things out, looking at the lines, getting a feel for the trail.
00:42:24.559 --> 00:42:25.440
You're going slow.
00:42:25.519 --> 00:42:25.840
Yeah.
00:42:26.000 --> 00:42:31.679
You you dial it up a little bit the next one, you ride it, yep, and then it's not till the third time down that you like open it up.
00:42:31.920 --> 00:42:35.039
Yep, yeah, and and they have that actually plastered at a lot of bike parks now.
00:42:35.039 --> 00:42:38.000
Oh, is that pre pre-ride, re-ride, and free ride.
00:42:38.000 --> 00:42:47.840
Okay, and uh, and so that's the same philosophy, and they'll that's become pretty common that I see at bike parks now, uh, because you never know what's coming.
00:42:47.840 --> 00:42:50.079
So, and and that's very true.
00:42:50.079 --> 00:42:54.480
So at Whistler, one of the things that I noticed was any of the blues.
00:42:54.480 --> 00:43:00.639
I knew there was nothing on that that I couldn't handle, and I would just open it up on the blues.
00:43:00.639 --> 00:43:07.920
When I got into the blacks, I knew there was probably one or two things that were gonna challenge me, but I could do them.
00:43:07.920 --> 00:43:10.559
I just needed to be cautious when I came into them.
00:43:10.559 --> 00:43:20.480
And then the double blacks were the ones that threw me because those were just multiple stuff and enough multiple stuff that sometimes it was just undoable.
00:43:20.480 --> 00:43:22.320
I just was not willing to try it, you know.
00:43:22.400 --> 00:43:23.760
Uh yeah, I know I get that feeling.
00:43:24.239 --> 00:43:29.760
And and so um, so yeah, definitely being aware, not just bulldozing into stuff, you know.
00:43:29.760 --> 00:43:32.000
Yeah, um, I thought you were gonna say follow somebody.
00:43:32.079 --> 00:43:35.199
And that's what was my next thing I was gonna bring up was following someone down.
00:43:35.440 --> 00:43:48.159
I I would be careful with that because if you have a friend who's really a talented rider and you follow them, you Well, this has got to be a trusted thing where it's like, hey man, I need to just I just need to kind of cruise down this.
00:43:48.239 --> 00:43:49.280
I want to follow your line.
00:43:49.280 --> 00:43:56.159
Yeah, can you just scrub your speed, make this a chill lap, and like go down slow and I'm gonna follow your line and just get myself to ease back into it.
00:43:56.400 --> 00:43:56.800
Yeah, yeah.
00:43:56.800 --> 00:43:57.679
I would say so.
00:43:57.679 --> 00:43:59.519
We used to do that a lot practicing racing.
00:43:59.519 --> 00:44:04.320
And there's been a couple times when I want off drops that I wouldn't have known, you know, or wouldn't have done.
00:44:04.320 --> 00:44:05.280
Because of your function.
00:44:05.280 --> 00:44:08.960
But I was just looking at somebody's back tire and then I was all of a sudden in the air.
00:44:08.960 --> 00:44:10.800
And I'm like, oh shit, you know.
00:44:11.039 --> 00:44:12.719
And there's things you've done that following you.
00:44:13.119 --> 00:44:13.280
Yeah.
00:44:13.280 --> 00:44:20.400
And there's there's things that you have to do, you know, to make the bike, you know, basically line up and land correctly.
00:44:20.400 --> 00:44:24.079
And so um, or not dead sailor and a jump and stuff like that.
00:44:24.159 --> 00:44:26.719
So I would just say that's what's dead sailor for our listeners?
00:44:26.960 --> 00:44:35.039
Uh so uh so one of the things that I follow good riders into jumps to know what speed to hit them, you know.
00:44:35.039 --> 00:44:41.679
And if you're not prepared and you don't know the jumps coming up, you may stiffen up.
00:44:41.679 --> 00:44:53.440
And when you stiffen up and you you kind of lock your arms and and you just kind of go stiff while you're in the air, yeah, and you're at the will of whatever gravity is doing to you.
00:44:53.440 --> 00:44:57.440
If you're tilting uh when you came off that a little bit, you keep tilting.
00:44:57.440 --> 00:45:05.039
And so Dead Sailor is when you just kind of leave the lip of a jump and kind of just stiffen up and just let the bike, yeah.
00:45:05.360 --> 00:45:11.679
You're not actually and you're drifting into whatever you're not positioning the bike and you're not soaking up the the hit or anything like that.
00:45:11.840 --> 00:45:14.800
And the way you get rid of that is style, little stees.
00:45:14.800 --> 00:45:16.239
Uh yeah.
00:45:16.239 --> 00:45:17.519
So you do a little style.
00:45:17.519 --> 00:45:20.320
So um you'll see like old in the olden days.
00:45:20.320 --> 00:45:21.440
So I use that out.
00:45:21.440 --> 00:45:22.159
Everybody take a drink.
00:45:22.159 --> 00:45:24.480
No, oh, I didn't say I said the olden days.
00:45:24.480 --> 00:45:25.840
You didn't say you didn't say back in the day.
00:45:25.840 --> 00:45:26.559
Yeah, you're right.
00:45:26.559 --> 00:45:27.599
Okay, so nobody can drink.
00:45:27.599 --> 00:45:28.400
Stop drinking.
00:45:28.639 --> 00:45:33.519
Um, okay, so it's the funny thing is is if I publish this episode first, no one's gonna know what we're talking about.
00:45:33.760 --> 00:45:35.599
I feel like that episode's already been, well, I don't know.
00:45:35.840 --> 00:45:36.079
It's not.
00:45:36.159 --> 00:45:36.719
Oh no, it's not.
00:45:36.719 --> 00:45:37.920
Okay, hasn't been published yet.
00:45:38.159 --> 00:45:40.159
The one where you said it all the time has been published.
00:45:40.559 --> 00:45:43.199
We should tell people that there's now a drinking game associated with it.
00:45:43.440 --> 00:45:46.239
Anytime Dane says back in the day, you have to drink, you have to drink.
00:45:46.400 --> 00:45:49.199
So, and I'm trying not to, because I don't want a bunch of alcoholic listeners.
00:45:49.199 --> 00:45:50.000
Oh, here we go.
00:45:50.159 --> 00:45:50.719
We already have that.
00:45:52.559 --> 00:46:01.519
So, but anyway, when you go off a jump, in order to prevent a dead sailor, you do a little bit, like turn the bar a little bit, you you do whip something.
00:46:01.519 --> 00:46:21.280
Intentional movement, um, tilting the bike, turning your bar just a little, pull your knees up, little flare, pulling it up, pushing down, whatever you do, that helps break break that uh that dead sailor, and you have more control to kind of set the bike down at the angle you want and not be subject to the wind, you know, which is literally what can happen.
00:46:21.599 --> 00:46:22.719
So let's recap what we talked about.
00:46:22.719 --> 00:46:25.039
So we talked about the physical stuff.
00:46:25.039 --> 00:46:32.719
I strongly advocate, you know, going and following through with the physical therapy sessions and and building back up because it when you don't use muscles, they atrophy.
00:46:33.039 --> 00:46:33.679
Let your body heal.
00:46:33.840 --> 00:46:34.559
Let your body heal.
00:46:34.559 --> 00:46:35.440
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:46:35.440 --> 00:46:40.400
Get get your follow the guidance of your doctors, let your body heal, build your strength back up.
00:46:40.400 --> 00:46:40.719
Yeah.
00:46:40.719 --> 00:46:42.400
So then get back on the bike.
00:46:42.559 --> 00:46:42.800
Yep.
00:46:42.800 --> 00:46:43.119
Right?
00:46:43.119 --> 00:46:44.400
Start off with something easy.
00:46:44.559 --> 00:46:46.800
Start off easy, start off slow.
00:46:47.199 --> 00:46:49.360
Um maybe do some trails you're not used to.
00:46:49.599 --> 00:46:53.119
Trails that you don't have a baseline to compare yourself so that you don't feel bad.
00:46:53.280 --> 00:46:53.920
Yep, yeah.
00:46:54.079 --> 00:46:56.320
Um, we we talk about sessioning for sure.
00:46:56.480 --> 00:46:56.880
Yeah.
00:46:57.039 --> 00:47:00.639
I think uh I I like the idea of following someone if it's a trusted partner.
00:47:00.639 --> 00:47:04.400
Yeah, like I know if I went and wear with you and I was like, Dane, I really want to work to go slow.
00:47:04.400 --> 00:47:05.440
I would watch out for you.
00:47:05.440 --> 00:47:06.320
You would do it for me.
00:47:06.320 --> 00:47:06.719
Yeah.
00:47:06.719 --> 00:47:13.440
Um, and then like there's another thing I thought like there's a social aspect to mountain biking.
00:47:13.440 --> 00:47:13.920
Uh-huh.
00:47:13.920 --> 00:47:20.159
And like yesterday with that new rider who came, he just wanted to ride on the back.
00:47:20.159 --> 00:47:35.840
And we've we've like got ourselves on this follow the leader thing where um we've got a group, it was like six guys, and you come up to anytime you come up to a trail intersection, the second guy back chooses which direction we go.
00:47:35.840 --> 00:47:36.400
Okay.
00:47:36.400 --> 00:47:38.480
And the first guy goes to the back.
00:47:38.480 --> 00:47:42.639
And you're constantly every single intersection, the second guy comes up.
00:47:42.639 --> 00:47:47.679
The second guy comes up, yeah, the first guy goes to the back, and we keep doing that.
00:47:47.679 --> 00:47:50.239
And the crazy thing is you have no idea where you're gonna ride.
00:47:50.239 --> 00:47:52.239
Okay, you don't know what the trail, what trail you're gonna ride.
00:47:52.559 --> 00:47:55.599
Oh, so this is how you break up the monotony that you ride the same thing.
00:47:55.599 --> 00:47:56.880
Right.
00:47:57.039 --> 00:48:00.320
So it's like, and then you look at their strawberry and like, where the fuck did those guys go?
00:48:00.320 --> 00:48:03.039
And like last night we had guys that don't know the trails at all.
00:48:03.039 --> 00:48:08.559
Yeah, and so they took us, one of the guys took us on this trail that like I haven't ridden in like 18 months because it's like a shit show.
00:48:08.559 --> 00:48:11.519
And I was like, damn, I haven't been on the shit show trail in a long time.
00:48:11.519 --> 00:48:14.559
Uh so it was it was it's fun because you never know what to expect.
00:48:14.559 --> 00:48:18.960
But um, so this guy who he was kind of struggling, he's just getting back into it.
00:48:18.960 --> 00:48:25.440
You know, there's like the social aspect of like he couldn't just fall two miles off the back.
00:48:25.440 --> 00:48:29.440
Yeah, because who was in the back was constantly changing throughout the ride.
00:48:29.440 --> 00:48:40.960
So not necessarily that perspective, but like if you go ride with a group and it's the people you trust, you're like, hey, I'm I'm easing back into it, you get the social thing that pulls you in and maybe can help break down some of your fear.
00:48:41.199 --> 00:48:44.960
Yeah, it can stop you from talking to yourself, talking to yourself, getting out of your fucking head.
00:48:44.960 --> 00:48:45.679
Yeah, yeah.
00:48:45.679 --> 00:48:47.119
So that helps a lot.
00:48:47.119 --> 00:48:52.159
And uh yeah, so so lots of ways to kind of start back into it.
00:48:52.159 --> 00:48:55.039
Um the ego trip is probably the biggest.
00:48:55.039 --> 00:49:01.519
The biggest barrier and the hardest thing to deal with, I think, is when you can't do what you used to be able to do.
00:49:01.519 --> 00:49:03.840
Yeah, and I'm I'm there, I'm right there.
00:49:03.840 --> 00:49:08.639
Uh I I don't think it's because I'm older, I think it's because I'm not riding like I used to.
00:49:08.639 --> 00:49:20.000
Um, but I don't do the same things, you know, the the injuries stack, you know, and so for me, I am not doing the same level of riding that I used to.
00:49:20.000 --> 00:49:20.400
Right.
00:49:20.400 --> 00:49:23.840
And uh I had this problem when I played golf.
00:49:23.840 --> 00:49:25.840
So same thing when I played golf.
00:49:25.840 --> 00:49:32.239
Uh I was a pretty good golfer, I was a two-handicap, um, played quite a bit for a long, long time.
00:49:32.400 --> 00:49:32.639
Yeah.
00:49:32.880 --> 00:49:40.079
And then um, I was also mountain bike racing, and at some point I got out of golf and I had to choose.
00:49:40.079 --> 00:49:43.760
If am I gonna spend four hours golfing or four hours on a bike?
00:49:44.079 --> 00:49:45.920
Yeah, the right decision, by the way, is on a bike.
00:49:45.920 --> 00:49:46.079
Yeah.
00:49:46.079 --> 00:49:47.360
Just for anyone that's what I choose.
00:49:47.360 --> 00:49:50.000
If you if anyone didn't know that on this call, you're on this podcast.
00:49:50.400 --> 00:49:57.519
Genuinely, my golfing friends, what I told them is I'll have to I'll have time to golf when I'm old.
00:49:57.760 --> 00:49:58.239
Yeah.
00:49:58.480 --> 00:50:02.079
And uh right now I'm gonna ride my bike because I may not be able to ride my bike all the time.
00:50:02.320 --> 00:50:03.920
But you're old now and you haven't started golfing.
00:50:04.480 --> 00:50:05.280
It's true.
00:50:05.280 --> 00:50:19.360
Um but uh, you know, I have some family members that golf, and so they would come to visit me, and it'd be a couple years uh since I had golfed, and I'd go out and golf with them, and my brain was too handicapped.
00:50:19.360 --> 00:50:20.400
Too handicapped.
00:50:20.400 --> 00:50:36.960
And I I can't tell you how many times I pulled a muscle or hurt myself because my body wound up to hit the ball the way that I used to, because my brain told it it could, and it was not stretched, it was not practiced, it was not conditioned for that.
00:50:37.119 --> 00:50:37.360
Right.
00:50:37.519 --> 00:50:45.360
And I'm literally like ripping tendons, you know, uh, because I'm trying to to swing like I did when I when I used to play a lot.
00:50:45.360 --> 00:50:50.239
And so that's the other thing about injury that you have to remember is that you're gonna step back, you know, a little bit.
00:50:50.239 --> 00:51:00.320
You got to condition all that stuff, you gotta get all those things working again, but you're also not that too handicapped anymore, you know, and so you gotta work back to it.
00:51:00.320 --> 00:51:01.440
And that's hard.
00:51:01.760 --> 00:51:02.320
I don't know, man.
00:51:02.320 --> 00:51:10.480
I mean, like my whole perspective and probably what's holding back my progression is like I have this mentality of like walk today, ride tomorrow.
00:51:10.639 --> 00:51:10.960
Yeah.
00:51:11.199 --> 00:51:14.000
Versus ride today, crash, don't ride tomorrow.
00:51:14.000 --> 00:51:14.400
Okay.
00:51:14.400 --> 00:51:14.719
Right.
00:51:14.719 --> 00:51:16.639
So I'd rather walk than than get hurt.
00:51:16.639 --> 00:51:17.039
Okay.
00:51:17.039 --> 00:51:27.280
You know, and then I start looking at as a strategist, I start looking at this data, and it says, you know, 75% of the crashes are at speeds of 50, 18.6 miles an hour is not that fast.
00:51:27.440 --> 00:51:27.760
Yeah.
00:51:28.000 --> 00:51:30.079
So it's like, okay, I should ride slower.
00:51:30.079 --> 00:51:32.079
And they and I don't really jump.
00:51:32.079 --> 00:51:32.320
Yeah.
00:51:32.320 --> 00:51:42.480
And so a lot of like I don't know, maybe it's just the the wonder of the Friday fails thing, but like it seems like most of the bad crashes are when people are jumping.
00:51:42.719 --> 00:51:51.920
Yeah, I I would say one thing we should distinguish in this podcast to talk about is the difference between crashing and getting an injury.
00:51:51.920 --> 00:51:56.800
And so I have crashed really small crashes and broken a bone in my hand.
00:51:57.039 --> 00:52:00.079
And you've had major crashes and not had anything happened.
00:52:00.320 --> 00:52:00.800
Nothing happened.
00:52:00.880 --> 00:52:01.599
Yeah, fair.
00:52:01.840 --> 00:52:09.119
And so um, so it's really, you know, uh learning to fall, having good equipment.
00:52:09.119 --> 00:52:14.639
If you are worried about falling, maybe having some elbow and knee pads and little little gear on you.
00:52:14.960 --> 00:52:19.519
I thought about like maybe going and taking some jujitsu classes or something that teach you how to fall.
00:52:19.760 --> 00:52:26.079
I I yoga, like all I do yoga, all these all these things to make your muscles not tear.
00:52:26.159 --> 00:52:26.480
Yeah.
00:52:26.639 --> 00:52:31.039
Like I I'm I'm believe it or not, my collarbone healed way faster.
00:52:31.039 --> 00:52:32.639
Than your doctor thought it was gonna.
00:52:32.639 --> 00:52:37.280
No, then like I uh pulled muscle on my back or something like that.
00:52:37.280 --> 00:52:41.039
And and you know, muscle and tendon is way worse.
00:52:41.039 --> 00:52:46.000
I have pulled, I've yanked, you know, I was racing in Duro at sunrise in in Arizona.
00:52:46.400 --> 00:52:47.920
This is when you yanked your gr your groin?
00:52:48.159 --> 00:52:48.719
No, no.
00:52:48.719 --> 00:52:50.719
Uh this is when I pull my thumb backwards.
00:52:50.719 --> 00:52:51.199
Oh yeah.
00:52:51.199 --> 00:52:58.480
And my thumb's still not right after that, and it's like yanked it backwards and kind of tore some ligaments and tendons.
00:52:58.480 --> 00:53:00.639
Took me off the bike for a few months.
00:53:00.639 --> 00:53:03.280
I didn't really, I that's it, you know.
00:53:03.280 --> 00:53:05.440
I just couldn't hold on to the bike anymore.
00:53:05.440 --> 00:53:08.079
Like literally, like my hand would just fall off.
00:53:08.079 --> 00:53:14.800
Um, so so there's little little things and big things, but crashing is not always a bad thing.
00:53:14.800 --> 00:53:17.199
Learning to crash is a good idea, you know.
00:53:17.199 --> 00:53:17.519
Yeah.
00:53:17.519 --> 00:53:26.800
And then if you do get like to be 150 like I am, and you're brittle, you definitely want to tone it down, you know, and have some protective gear on.
00:53:27.039 --> 00:53:31.119
So so my question for you then, because you're still in the middle of this kinesiology thing, right?
00:53:31.119 --> 00:53:34.000
You're yeah, you you're still in your head, you're not riding where you will.
00:53:34.079 --> 00:53:34.239
Yeah.
00:53:34.400 --> 00:53:38.719
Do you think you'll just dial it back a little bit and set reset your baseline to something that's a little less than a little bit of a big thing?
00:53:38.880 --> 00:53:39.679
Yeah, I think that's easy.
00:53:39.679 --> 00:53:43.360
That's what's happening right now, and that's what I'm struggling with, the ego part.
00:53:43.760 --> 00:53:46.719
You're like Spider-Man when he went through the change and your eyes are turning on black.
00:53:46.719 --> 00:53:47.920
You haven't seen the new Spider-Man yet.
00:53:48.159 --> 00:53:48.559
No, I haven't.
00:53:48.559 --> 00:53:49.119
Yeah, sorry.
00:53:49.119 --> 00:53:49.280
Yeah.
00:53:49.280 --> 00:53:50.320
Now you spoil it for me.
00:53:50.320 --> 00:53:50.719
Sorry.
00:53:50.719 --> 00:53:52.000
So now he's gonna change.
00:53:52.000 --> 00:53:58.079
Um, but anyway, the the ego part is the hard part is that I don't, it's kind of my my who I am.
00:53:58.079 --> 00:54:01.920
You know, I identify as a you know a downhill racer.
00:54:02.480 --> 00:54:04.480
You say it, you say it in almost every podcast.
00:54:04.639 --> 00:54:04.960
Yeah.
00:54:05.039 --> 00:54:08.559
And I have never known you when you downhill race, by the way.
00:54:08.559 --> 00:54:10.079
Uh yeah, you're right.
00:54:10.239 --> 00:54:10.639
You're right.
00:54:10.639 --> 00:54:13.840
Because we met after Yeah, yeah, you're right.
00:54:14.159 --> 00:54:17.039
So, like to me, as far as I'm concerned, you could be making it all up.
00:54:17.039 --> 00:54:18.800
Maybe no breaks was not even a real thing.
00:54:18.800 --> 00:54:19.119
I don't know.
00:54:19.519 --> 00:54:20.159
It existed.
00:54:20.159 --> 00:54:22.000
There's like four people that know about it.
00:54:22.000 --> 00:54:26.159
Um, so no, I you know, I you're right.
00:54:26.159 --> 00:54:28.000
So, and that's part of my identity.
00:54:28.000 --> 00:54:32.639
My my you know, my nickname is Downhill Dane and has been for a long, long time.
00:54:32.639 --> 00:54:34.719
And so it is part of who I am.
00:54:34.719 --> 00:54:35.840
So that's an ego thing.
00:54:35.840 --> 00:54:37.519
That's really hard to let go of.
00:54:37.519 --> 00:54:43.519
And if I let that control me too much on the trail, I'm gonna that those injuries are gonna keep happening.
00:54:43.519 --> 00:55:02.480
So I have to, I have to come to terms, you know, and so that's one of the the things about uh you know, coming back from an injury is you have to be able to dial that ego back and you have to be able to to kind of hit reset and be okay with not being the fastest guy, not hitting the biggest jump, not doing the biggest, you know, things.
00:55:02.800 --> 00:55:04.320
Do you think you need to rebrand?
00:55:04.320 --> 00:55:08.880
Like if you if you're known as downhill dane, yeah, like and you're not downhill dane anymore.
00:55:08.880 --> 00:55:11.119
What if I'm a like flat trail dane?
00:55:11.119 --> 00:55:12.800
Oh, yeah, I was thinking Lycra Dane or something like that.
00:55:12.960 --> 00:55:14.320
Like Rodane, no way.
00:55:14.880 --> 00:55:18.239
But no, no, honestly, like something equally as punk rock.
00:55:18.239 --> 00:55:18.480
Yeah.
00:55:18.480 --> 00:55:23.760
Like you could just change your email instead of downhill Dane to like guru, like the suspension guru Dane.
00:55:24.239 --> 00:55:26.639
More people now know me as guru.
00:55:26.880 --> 00:55:27.119
Yeah.
00:55:27.280 --> 00:55:30.239
And so honestly, that has become kind of my nickname, you know.
00:55:30.559 --> 00:55:34.480
So why don't you just rebrand and strip all the downhill stuff out of your out of your moniker?
00:55:34.800 --> 00:55:36.320
Because letting go of your ego is hard.
00:55:36.320 --> 00:55:40.079
I know, you know, and it's like it's kind of a sadden thing, you know.
00:55:40.079 --> 00:55:46.159
Like if I go to top golf for a birthday party, I want to hit that drive 300 yards.
00:55:46.159 --> 00:55:48.960
Like, like I am, I am out for blood.
00:55:48.960 --> 00:55:52.960
I'm gonna make that, I'm gonna smash that ball into tiny little pull your back.
00:55:52.960 --> 00:55:54.800
Exactly.
00:55:54.800 --> 00:55:55.840
Exactly.
00:55:55.840 --> 00:56:09.440
But my you know, I I want because your ego like wants, I mean it feels good to be able to just hit that drive so hard that and and those things are computerized, so they tell everybody how far you hit it, you know, which is cool.
00:56:09.440 --> 00:56:12.000
Um, but yeah, you gotta let go of that.
00:56:12.079 --> 00:56:14.960
So we got a good 20, 30 years of riding left in us.
00:56:14.960 --> 00:56:18.079
40, maybe 50, maybe depending on science.
00:56:18.079 --> 00:56:20.800
I mean 50 is we would be stretching it.
00:56:20.800 --> 00:56:21.119
Yeah.
00:56:21.119 --> 00:56:24.480
That would be but 20, 30 years realistically, to ride bikes.
00:56:24.480 --> 00:56:26.639
Like, I want to ride.
00:56:26.639 --> 00:56:33.679
Like, I don't really care if I'm hauling ass or taking giant drops or going over the most technical, crazy shit ever.
00:56:33.840 --> 00:56:35.119
Well, I don't want to ride.
00:56:35.119 --> 00:56:36.559
So that and that's true.
00:56:36.559 --> 00:56:38.800
Uh everybody rides for different reasons.
00:56:38.800 --> 00:56:39.199
Yeah.
00:56:39.199 --> 00:56:47.840
So like um, if I so I did a big ride this weekend, and aside from almost dying, um Lacey saw what you did.
00:56:47.920 --> 00:56:49.519
He's like, she's like, what is he doing?
00:56:49.519 --> 00:56:50.960
And he tried it backwards.
00:56:50.960 --> 00:56:52.480
Yes, you're not supposed to do that.
00:56:52.719 --> 00:56:53.760
I know, it was stupid.
00:56:53.760 --> 00:56:55.280
Tell tell a story what happened.
00:56:55.280 --> 00:57:00.800
Uh it's a long story, but real quick is uh I dropped my daughter off for a hike with her friend.
00:57:00.800 --> 00:57:08.960
I had two hours to burn, so I took my bike and was gonna do some laps on our on uh we're up on the mountain in the in the cool pines.
00:57:08.960 --> 00:57:13.119
Yeah, and um out of the 116 degree degree weather down here.
00:57:13.119 --> 00:57:21.679
And I went on a trail that I haven't done in a long, long time and had forgotten, easily forgotten, how hard it is.
00:57:21.679 --> 00:57:23.920
And I did it backwards, like she said.
00:57:23.920 --> 00:57:31.920
Yeah, just stupid, just mistake after mistake, got stuck out in the middle of nowhere, basically way away.
00:57:31.920 --> 00:57:37.760
Uh went into heat stroke, started shaking, had a hard time, uh, bonking.
00:57:37.760 --> 00:57:40.719
And I had to explain this to a friend of mine what bonking actually means.
00:57:40.719 --> 00:57:42.880
Because calories, yeah.
00:57:42.880 --> 00:57:46.400
Well, sometimes people hear the word bonk and you're like, oh, you were just tired.
00:57:46.400 --> 00:57:46.719
No.
00:57:46.719 --> 00:57:49.280
Uh bonking is a physical.
00:57:49.440 --> 00:57:53.119
Um You actually you don't have you do not have calories to burn in your system.
00:57:53.360 --> 00:57:55.599
Yeah, your your your muscles don't work.
00:57:55.599 --> 00:58:00.400
Like you go to lift your leg and your body is like flips you the bird and says it's not gonna happen.
00:58:00.400 --> 00:58:12.320
And so I got to where I had to climb up 2,000 feet uh on this super rocky terrain, pushing a 50-pound bike um up to get out of it.
00:58:12.320 --> 00:58:16.559
And I genuinely thought you weren't gonna make it I wasn't gonna make it.
00:58:16.559 --> 00:58:25.039
Um I took brakes and and ended up making it, you know, because I was smart and because I was lucky, because it was a nice day, 75.
00:58:25.039 --> 00:58:29.199
Uh were you out of electrolytes as well, or just just had electrolytes?
00:58:29.199 --> 00:58:29.519
Okay.
00:58:29.599 --> 00:58:31.679
So you weren't like you didn't have like the muscle lock.
00:58:32.079 --> 00:58:32.880
I didn't have cramping.
00:58:32.880 --> 00:58:33.119
Okay.
00:58:33.119 --> 00:58:36.159
I just literally the trail was up.
00:58:36.159 --> 00:58:42.000
Uh my legs just didn't want to I I could I could walk 10 feet and I'd be exhausted, and my heart rate went through the roof.
00:58:42.000 --> 00:58:52.880
Um, and so I'm at the point where I'm gonna ditch my bike in the woods because pushing it is so hard to do, and the trail is so unrideable and hike a bike like upstairs.
00:58:52.880 --> 00:58:55.199
Like imagine going up the Empire State building.
00:58:55.440 --> 00:58:56.400
That's what you were doing with your bike.
00:58:56.559 --> 00:58:58.400
Yeah, with your bike, with your you know a heavy ass bike.
00:58:58.400 --> 00:58:59.599
Heavy ass bike.
00:58:59.599 --> 00:59:04.079
And uh I I got out and I was I was thinking about it.
00:59:04.079 --> 00:59:13.280
We got down the mountain and we went to pizza, and I, you know, I'm thinking about this experience, and you know, was I really close to death?
00:59:13.280 --> 00:59:16.159
Well all of this stuff, was I just panicky, like what was going on?
00:59:16.159 --> 00:59:18.400
I I know I had those physical things going on.
00:59:18.400 --> 00:59:31.039
I've had a little heat exhaustion, so I knew I was at that, but I started to get uh what we call a runner's high, like that that endorphin kick in after you do a big big second wind, yeah.
00:59:31.039 --> 00:59:34.719
And I was thinking to myself, that feels good.
00:59:34.719 --> 00:59:43.039
Uh I'm I'm I'm glad I'm getting this feeling because I was miserable and I was worried, and I was really worried for my daughter who had no idea where I was.
00:59:43.280 --> 00:59:44.079
No signal of it.
00:59:44.320 --> 00:59:46.800
Coming back to the car and has no idea where I'm at.
00:59:46.800 --> 00:59:54.239
And um, and so in that experience, like I was like, oh, this runner's high is kind of a thing, you know, you can do that.
00:59:54.239 --> 00:59:55.280
I don't like it that much.
00:59:55.280 --> 00:59:57.199
I like adrenaline way better.
00:59:57.199 --> 01:00:03.840
When you're riding with adrenaline, like when you're going off of stuff and you get that adrenaline high, it's during.
01:00:03.840 --> 01:00:06.880
Uh, it's while you're doing it that you're getting this high.
01:00:06.880 --> 01:00:11.760
This is why when I crash, I don't have a lot of pain because I got so much adrenaline going.
01:00:11.760 --> 01:00:13.360
So it's hard to dial it back.
01:00:13.599 --> 01:00:14.719
So it's almost like an addiction.
01:00:14.960 --> 01:00:15.519
Uh totally.
01:00:15.519 --> 01:00:19.920
It is the one drug that I will fully admit that I'm totally addicted to.
01:00:19.920 --> 01:00:20.159
Yeah.
01:00:20.159 --> 01:00:22.480
So if they put it other than ketamine.
01:00:22.480 --> 01:00:23.840
Uh I don't know what ketamine is.
01:00:23.840 --> 01:00:24.960
Okay, I'm sure you don't.
01:00:24.960 --> 01:00:25.920
I don't know.
01:00:25.920 --> 01:00:29.519
I I know that somebody who somebody famous died at ketamine.
01:00:29.519 --> 01:00:30.239
It doesn't matter.
01:00:30.239 --> 01:00:30.639
Keep going.
01:00:30.639 --> 01:00:31.679
Matthew Perry.
01:00:31.679 --> 01:00:32.239
Yes.
01:00:32.239 --> 01:00:33.119
Yes, yeah.
01:00:33.119 --> 01:00:43.840
So um, yeah, so for me, the ego is the hard thing to get past, is wanting to show people what I'm capable of or what I used to be capable of, things like that.
01:00:43.840 --> 01:00:49.599
And so, you know, when you're dealing with an injury, you can you can re-injure yourself if you do that too much, you know.
01:00:49.599 --> 01:00:54.000
Yeah, and uh you can s slow down your healing if you do that too much.
01:00:54.000 --> 01:00:54.960
So you gotta be careful.
01:00:55.280 --> 01:00:58.000
Well, Dane's gonna rebrand himself as the guru.
01:00:58.320 --> 01:00:59.360
Yeah, um, uphill Dane.
01:00:59.599 --> 01:01:01.360
Uphill Dane versus downhill Dane.
01:01:01.360 --> 01:01:03.760
Anything we missed in this is an interesting conversation.
01:01:03.760 --> 01:01:05.039
I think everybody deals with it.
01:01:05.039 --> 01:01:05.360
Yeah.
01:01:05.360 --> 01:01:09.920
You know, uh, we'd love to hear like y'all's perspective, you know, or stories.
01:01:09.920 --> 01:01:11.360
Or stories like what happened to you.
01:01:11.360 --> 01:01:12.880
Did you almost die on a mountain bike?
01:01:12.880 --> 01:01:14.800
How did you all yeah, how did you survive?
01:01:14.800 --> 01:01:18.880
And then uh were there any tricks or anything that you used to get back on?
01:01:19.039 --> 01:01:19.360
Yeah.
01:01:19.519 --> 01:01:24.880
You know, I think like starting out slow, easing back into it, yeah, but but for sure getting back on.
01:01:25.039 --> 01:01:25.760
And the mental.
01:01:25.760 --> 01:01:27.679
The mental is the thing I'm struggling with.
01:01:27.679 --> 01:01:34.239
If anyone has any good mental techniques that help them, uh let us know because I'm still struggling with that.
01:01:34.239 --> 01:01:35.280
So visualize it.
01:01:35.519 --> 01:01:35.920
All right, buddy.
01:01:35.920 --> 01:01:37.440
You got any final thoughts for our listeners here?
01:01:37.679 --> 01:01:38.159
That's it, man.
01:01:38.159 --> 01:01:38.800
Don't get hurt.
01:01:38.960 --> 01:01:39.519
Don't get hurt.
01:01:39.519 --> 01:01:41.519
Yeah, we appreciate you both.
