ABOUT THIS EPISODE
Mormon scholar Dan McClellan appeared on one of the world’s biggest podcasts—and the Mormon backlash has been fascinating! On tonight’s Mormon Newscast, we examine Dan McClellan’s appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience, where the Latter-day Saint biblical scholar spent more than two hours discussing the Bible, ancient religion, biblical contradictions, and how religious beliefs developed over time. But here’s the twist: despite McClellan being an active Mormon, Mormonism itself was barely discussed. Now McClellan is facing criticism from multiple directions. Some believing Latter-day Saints are upset that he didn’t use the opportunity to share his testimony or promote the restored gospel. Others are questioning how he reconciles his biblical scholarship with traditional LDS teachings. And some of his more progressive supporters are disappointed that he appeared on Rogan’s controversial platform in the first place. Did McClellan miss a once-in-a-lifetime missionary opportunity, or did he demonstrate that serious biblical scholarship can stand on its own without religious proselytizing? We’ll examine what happened, what McClellan actually said, and why the reaction has become a story of its own. Also on Tonight’s Mormon Newscast Stake President Embezzles $30 Million: A former Washington state LDS stake president is sentenced to prison after stealing millions from the healthcare organization he ran. How did someone engaged in financial misconduct end up in a position of spiritual leadership? $3 Million Donation to a New Juneteenth Museum: A major contribution to the National Juneteenth Museum in Fort Worth, Texas, raises interesting questions about the LDS Church’s evolving relationship with race, history, and its public image. A Non-Christian Statue in the LDS Conference Center? A surprising new artistic display has people talking about religious symbolism and what belongs inside one of Mormonism’s most recognizable buildings. Tim Ballard Blames Everyone But Himself: The former Operation Underground Railroad founder is accusing LDS leaders of conspiring against him, covering up abuse, and sabotaging his political ambitions. We examine his latest allegations and the ongoing legal controversies surrounding him. Spying for the Lord… or at Least to Peep: Former Maryland sheriff’s detective Ryan Christopher Hall faces federal charges involving allegations that he secretly recorded sexually explicit material of two children related to him using hidden bathroom cameras. We discuss the allegations and the serious charges against him. Jesus or the LDS Church—What’s the Difference? A Salt Lake Tribune commentary raises a thought-provoking possibility: When people say they’re losing faith, is it necessarily Jesus they’re losing faith in, or the religious institution claiming to represent him? Does This Photograph Really Show Joseph Smith? A new documentary examines the evidence surrounding the controversial daguerreotype that some believe could be an authentic photograph of Mormonism’s founder. The Devil’s Prayer: A Satanic Temple representative opens an Iowa city council meeting with a Satanic invocation, prompting an angry response from a Christian pastor. What happens when religious freedom extends to religions we don’t like? Ammon Bundy Breaking the Law Again? The Mormon anti-government activist is arrested near Cedar City, Utah, after refusing to comply with vehicle registration laws, then reportedly walks eight miles along Interstate 15 in protest. The LDS Church Puts Its Money Behind Idaho’s Abortion Fight: Church leaders have contributed $1 million to a campaign opposing an Idaho ballot measure that would protect abortion rights and overturn existing restrictions. From biblical scholarship and Mormon identity to financial scandals, religious freedom, political activism, and church influence, tonight’s episode explores the stories shaping Mormonism and the world around it.
