Speaker 1: But the Master starts tomorrow and the official golf expert of this show is Will Grimmer, golf pro, Ohio State legend, Marymont legend, friend of the show, Bengals fan, Reds fan, and legendary golf instructor who has even tried to fix my swing.
00:00:22
Speaker 2: Hi, Will, Oh, how are you?
00:00:25
Speaker 1: I'm excited for this weekend? How are you?
00:00:29
Speaker 2: Oh? I mean the Reds are eight and three, It's Master's Week, and my birthday falls on Master Sunday, so I have no complaints.
00:00:35
Speaker 1: Wow, Well, I kind of want to know what's going to be happening on Sunday. Now, give me one or two storylines that interest you most heading into tomorrow.
00:00:44
Speaker 2: Boy, there's a lot. I think it's it's you know a lot of experts have kind of said this week that this is kind of the true passing of the Guard, the first time since I think nineteen ninety four that either Tiger nor Phil are playing in the Master's Definitely a new era for the Masters here, and you know, obviously Scotti Rory defending his title, and I think a very hungry Justin Rose, who's been playing some unbelievable golf at forty six and coming off the heels of losing a playoff last year, though certainly kind of striking me as the top three.
00:01:20
Speaker 1: If I am going into this wanting to pick an outright winner who is maybe not a popular pick, where should I look?
00:01:31
Speaker 2: I mean to be honest, I really, I really love Rose. I think Rose is someone that yes he's top ten in the world ranking, but at forty six, I don't necessarily know that that many people are picking him to win compared to guys say like Bryson or Rory or Scottie or even say Cameron Young fresh off of his Players Championship victory. But I just think Rose is such a great iron player top five and strokes gained approach the and with this weather forecast this week, iron play with firm greens is going to be imperative, and so I love the guys that can get the ball close to the hole coming into the greens.
00:02:10
Speaker 1: For the reasons you just articulated, Cameron Young is very popular. Steer me either in his direction or away from him.
00:02:18
Speaker 2: I love Cameron Young, I think, you know, especially being partial, he was the guy whow up playing a lot of junior in college golf with, was a close friend of his He's always had supreme length. You know, people are still raving about that three hundred and seventy five yard drive on eighteenth the players, one of the best pride t shots I've ever seen. Under the situation, I think he's always kind of weakness that maybe he struggled with was his wedge play and being able to really control it coming into the greens from inside of say one twenty five. But he is really really up that part of his game in these last couple of years, and I feel like right now, especially these last six weeks, you know, it's probably never been stronger, and so I think especially coming off of the heels of a big win, now that monkey's off of his back. He's always been close, he's always been in contention, but he might be freed up a little bit to really go make some noise this week at Augusta.
00:03:08
Speaker 1: Is there a player who you look at and go, you know what, probably not to win, but you wouldn't be surprised to see him atop the leaderboard at the end of play tomorrow. That makes sense.
00:03:18
Speaker 2: Yeah, definitely have a few of those. I really like Jake Napp. I think he's a guy who won. He bombs the ball and again looks for distance to be supreme. With the firm conditions this week, just having shorter clubs in your hand is going to simply just allow you to have a little bit more control coming into these crazy green complexes at Augusta. And so I think someone like Jake, who's also second in strokes gained putting this season on the PGA Tour, just has some absurd length off the tee. And so that's certainly someone that again hasn't really been proven in the major championships. Same thing with the guy like Min Wu Lee, even the Sam Stevens who's the top fifteen and driving. But look for someone like that and if you want just kind of a true, kind of fun dark horse, I think he's one of the ascending talents on the PJ Tour. Chris Gotrup again absolutely destroys the ball three wins in the past I think fifteen months, maybe just over a year on the PJA Tour. I think he's twenty four to twenty five, great young player Rutgers and then transferred Oklahoma. Really just fun personality, fun guy to watch and I could see him now again it's his first time around Augusta. History shows that first time players, no one's won on the first time since Raymond Floyd in nineteen seventy nine, So keep that at bay. But if you're looking for a fun Thursday Friday play from a bang perspective, Chris Godrup could be certainly a fun wader.
00:04:38
Speaker 1: I'm not going to ask you to slander any professional golfer, but is there a big name that a lot of people may be looking at that you would maybe steer clear off.
00:04:50
Speaker 2: You know, there's a few that I think Justin Thomas is one of them, Jordan Spieth, Tommy Fleetwood. Now again, if you're looking for a top fifty teen, top ten play, Fleetwoods actually a great pick if you're looking for someone to outright win. I steer away a little bit from Fleetwood just because he's won one time on the PGA Tour. He's gotten into contention a lot, but he's been prone to not being able to really close the door. Love Big Aberg another young talent that, again a lot of people are really high on. He did finish runner up in twenty four I believe to Scottie. However, two shot lead last week in Houston, he wasn't able to hold on and ultimately lost out to Garry Woodland. He's had a number of opportunities where he's been able to shut the door and he hasn't. And so for that reason, I'm steering clear again not to say that they don't get in the contention, because I think either of those two guys do. But I'm a little bit throwing caution to the wind if you're making any kind of bet for say a top five or a win, and then just a true steer clear of Justin Thomas and Jordan. Again, I've been big fans of those guys. They're great players. They've won major championships. However, Jordan hasn't won, and who knows how long it's been quite some time, and Justin just for whatever reason, seems to have some demons when it comes to Augusta. And so for that reason, I'm kind of a stay away until you prove it to me on those two players. And so for that reason, I'm a little bit as it'sant on those guys.
00:06:14
Speaker 1: You've been on the air with me for nearly six minutes and you just made an illusion to Scotti Scheffler for the first time a few seconds ago. He is the odds on favorite. He's Scotty Scheffler, So why is that.
00:06:26
Speaker 2: Here's the thing, There's no doubt this is probably some of the strangest form he's been when it comes to his driver and it comes to his irons. This year, he played unbelievably well at the American Express and then he just kind of has been in a little bit of a funk. However, I'm starting to put him into the category of Tiger in his prime, where it's like, you know what until you prove otherwise. For the very same reasons I was out on someone like JT or Speed, I'm always going to be on Scottie because he just seems to right now find a way at these major championships, and he obviously loves Augusta National. So there's no doubt he's definitely the odds on favorite, as he deserves to be. But there's some other because he's a favorite and not playing quite as well, there's some more value in picking some of these other guys over Scotty right now.
00:07:14
Speaker 1: All right, the pride of Marymont and Ohio State Will Grimmer is with us. If folks are going to watch this weekend and they're like, you know what I want to play. Like some of these dudes, I need top end instruction. I'm gonna go see Will Grimmer who owns and runs and is the teacher at Law fifty nine. Where can they find you?

Like I've been around a lot of coaches around and around a lot of teachers, a lot of different disciplines of my life. You're probably the best. If you can make my swing better, and let's be honest, there's not a lot to work with there. If you can make my swing better, then you can make pretty much anybody swing better.
00:08:20
Speaker 2: We've seen some good improvements, we definitely have. So no, it's been a lot of fun. I really enjoyed I enjoy working with people and seeing people get enjoyment out of this great game.
