Rob is also the host of the Leading with Genuine Care podcast, where he talks with mindful leaders on how to create an extraordinary culture that has a big impact on the lives of our team, customers, and the world.
00:01:38.572 --> 00:01:44.871
In today's episode, we delve into how leaders can find balance between personal wellbeing and professional success.
00:01:45.352 --> 00:01:54.891
We'll explore the transformative strategies from his book Shine that empowers entrepreneurs to not just find success on the outside, but to find peace on the inside.
00:01:55.489 --> 00:01:57.168
Rob, welcome to the podcast.
00:01:57.453 --> 00:02:00.754
Cody, I am humbled and honored to be with you today.
00:02:00.759 --> 00:02:01.983
Thank you for having me.
00:02:02.762 --> 00:02:04.052
The pleasure is all mine.
00:02:04.388 --> 00:02:14.609
As I was mentioning earlier when I started to read your book, I felt like you were speaking to me as I'm somebody who's had a fair amount of success in having businesses.
00:02:14.878 --> 00:02:28.169
But simultaneously what you talk about in your book is a lot of entrepreneurs have this outward success that they, either have the money or the fame and they're doing really well, but internally, they're often really struggling.
00:02:28.498 --> 00:02:40.248
And that's definitely something I identify as somebody who's felt, basically I've felt per perpetual burnout is the only way I can describe it, that working as I become more successful is harder.
00:02:40.519 --> 00:02:42.649
Than it was when I wasn't as successful.
00:02:42.989 --> 00:02:49.979
I would love for you to share some insights as to what was the pretense that allowed you to even write this book in the first place.
00:02:50.352 --> 00:02:54.192
did you see in the world of entrepreneurship that led you down this path?
00:02:54.701 --> 00:02:57.762
Well, very similar things that you've been experiencing.
00:02:58.252 --> 00:03:09.211
I've been around entrepreneurs my whole adult life, and I've seen what we put ourselves through and I was curious what that was all about.
00:03:09.632 --> 00:03:13.562
My co-author and I, Gino Wickman would talk about this for 20 years.
00:03:13.562 --> 00:03:25.632
We would get together at a local coffee shop and spend half a day or a full day just asking these questions, about what this whole thing is all about and why we put ourselves through it.
00:03:25.991 --> 00:03:28.002
And it goes very deep.
00:03:28.271 --> 00:03:36.912
And there are many answers and many different answers for different people, but there does seem to be some common theme around escaping.
00:03:37.507 --> 00:03:39.486
and putting everything into our work.
00:03:39.486 --> 00:03:49.086
So maybe consciously or subconsciously, we don't spend time looking inward and to understand what's really going on inside of us.
00:03:50.008 --> 00:03:50.877
what's your story?
00:03:50.877 --> 00:04:02.217
What was your entrepreneurial story that allowed you to decide to go down this path of actually focusing on mindfulness and combining that with running a company or being a leader?
00:04:02.687 --> 00:04:02.978
Yeah.
00:04:03.157 --> 00:04:10.280
So, when I was 14 years old, I started selling blow pop lollipops outta my locker with my best friend Joel.
00:04:10.669 --> 00:04:13.789
We would buy them from a, for a nickel and resell them for a quarter.
00:04:14.669 --> 00:04:24.629
the two of us had all kinds of entrepreneurial businesses in high school and college, and when we graduated college, we started a business.
00:04:25.095 --> 00:04:27.524
Outta the basement of his childhood home.
00:04:28.764 --> 00:04:32.708
We still own it today, although we don't run it at that time.
00:04:32.947 --> 00:04:38.918
I'd also gotten married, so I'd gotten married in my early twenties and my wife and I started having kids.
00:04:38.918 --> 00:04:47.951
I had my first child when I was 25, and right around that time I noticed that something didn't seem right.
00:04:48.581 --> 00:04:50.112
I felt outta sorts.
00:04:50.232 --> 00:04:56.651
I was always anxious, I was always stressed and I could tell I just wasn't a very good person in general.
00:04:56.711 --> 00:04:57.942
Wasn't a good husband.
00:04:57.971 --> 00:05:04.151
I wasn't about to be a good father and wasn't the greatest business partner with my best friend Joel.
00:05:04.872 --> 00:05:14.562
And I was sharing how I was feeling with him or about that with him, and he suggested that I see a therapist, which 30 years ago wasn't.
00:05:14.862 --> 00:05:16.512
Quite the same as it is nowadays.
00:05:16.512 --> 00:05:17.081
Thank goodness.
00:05:17.081 --> 00:05:18.401
It's very common nowadays.
00:05:18.432 --> 00:05:29.541
And that began, an inner journey for me to better understand what had happened in my life and why I was showing up in the ways that I was.
00:05:29.541 --> 00:05:38.523
So, when you did the introduction, which was very kind, and I share a little bit here, that's my outer story.
00:05:38.536 --> 00:05:45.754
it's what you know most of us talk about when we're, going about our days and people say, who are you?
00:05:45.759 --> 00:05:47.464
Tell me a little bit about yourself.
00:05:47.944 --> 00:05:50.675
What we usually don't do is tell our inner story.
00:05:51.074 --> 00:05:52.725
and that's usually quite private.
00:05:52.774 --> 00:05:57.875
and we actually, in our programs, we encourage people to start sharing their inner story.
00:05:58.144 --> 00:06:01.324
We've gotta be honest, and not have secrets.
00:06:01.564 --> 00:06:06.904
Now you don't have to share it with the world like I am and like my co-author Gina Wickman is doing.
00:06:07.305 --> 00:06:13.394
we're doing that to hopefully inspire others to share it with somebody, somebody close with that to them.
00:06:14.064 --> 00:06:15.024
and I'll share it now.
00:06:15.024 --> 00:06:16.300
I'll share my inner story.
00:06:16.300 --> 00:06:25.713
And I always like to say that, whenever I do this, and I've done it thousands of times now I get a funny feeling in my chest.
00:06:25.742 --> 00:06:30.632
And I even get a shaky voice sometimes because it's still hard to this day.
00:06:31.002 --> 00:06:36.913
some of the things that, that happened as I was growing up, but around the, age eight, I.
00:06:37.242 --> 00:06:46.223
I began, from what I can remember, I began to, experience a great deal of trauma and abuse, sexual, physical, mental abuse.
00:06:46.762 --> 00:06:56.213
What I would do is to get away from it, I would go outside and throw the ball or hit a ball against a wall in my childhood home.
00:06:56.663 --> 00:07:02.423
So I was really taking a solace in that and escaping from everything that was going on.
00:07:02.882 --> 00:07:05.163
I had imaginary friends that I would play with.
00:07:05.642 --> 00:07:09.812
I was a short kid and in ninth grade when I went into high school, I was four foot eight.
00:07:10.142 --> 00:07:11.642
So I was constantly bullied.
00:07:11.762 --> 00:07:13.382
I was the shortest kid at school.
00:07:14.523 --> 00:07:16.322
I had a ton of health issues.
00:07:16.452 --> 00:07:23.413
I was taking medication that was leaving me jittery, literally shaky and, uneasy all the time.
00:07:23.872 --> 00:07:26.033
one of the health issues I had was asthma.
00:07:26.632 --> 00:07:28.372
And when I was 14.
00:07:28.718 --> 00:07:35.048
I was having a massive asthma attack and I was dying and no one was around to help me.
00:07:35.228 --> 00:07:38.954
And at that time I was ready to let go.
00:07:39.165 --> 00:07:44.985
Actually, I, in some way, I was just ready to say, take me, I'm kind of good.
00:07:44.990 --> 00:07:46.004
I'm done with this.
00:07:46.314 --> 00:07:49.795
which is really crazy to say now I'm 54 now.
00:07:50.105 --> 00:07:52.725
and I enjoy and, appreciate life so much.
00:07:52.725 --> 00:07:55.425
So it's really amazing to think back at that time.
00:07:55.545 --> 00:07:57.915
It seems like a different person and it really was.
00:07:58.348 --> 00:08:05.528
as I went into my adult years, and went into therapy, I was diagnosed with OCD, I was depressed.
00:08:05.528 --> 00:08:08.838
I was never present, with the people I was around.
00:08:08.838 --> 00:08:17.047
I was just constantly anxious and so, You know, as I mentioned, thankfully something in my intuition said this isn't right.
00:08:17.387 --> 00:08:41.961
and began that journey, to go inside and, to fast forward now as those many years, later to, you know, have really worked on how I can find inner peace and build that business, by the way, as I was doing, and, be as good of a father and husband and, friend, family member, all those things, good person in society, it really inspired Gino and I to write the book Shine.
00:08:42.812 --> 00:08:43.532
that's amazing.
00:08:43.532 --> 00:08:45.325
I identify so much with that.
00:08:45.835 --> 00:08:56.932
in your book you also mentioned conscious leadership and organization that attempts to help the executives to lead the organizations and treat people, in more respectful way.
00:08:57.261 --> 00:09:08.422
And I think we also need, conscious, inner work or the conscious leader in the way that we need to respect and be present with what are we feeling in the moment?
00:09:08.692 --> 00:09:13.912
Because it's so easy to just reflect on what society tells us.
00:09:13.912 --> 00:09:15.106
we need to be successful.
00:09:15.326 --> 00:09:21.366
we need to work hard, grind, hustle culture, and then you end up being successful.
00:09:21.606 --> 00:09:27.187
And in my case, it's like the more successful I became, the more depressed that I became.
00:09:27.726 --> 00:09:35.153
And I also identify with, childhood trauma, with being bullied in school, I also have asthma.
00:09:35.153 --> 00:09:37.432
And so I was in the hospital many times as a kid.
00:09:37.942 --> 00:09:55.043
so it seems, I think that there's also this other perspective that if you're somebody who, doesn't fit in well with school or has trauma, I think perhaps, I'm not sure if there's any studies, but I would almost be willing to bet that if you have those things, you are more likely to be an entrepreneur when you grow up.
00:09:55.763 --> 00:09:57.052
Yeah, I think you're right.
00:09:57.102 --> 00:10:05.452
because what we wanna do as an entrepreneur, part of, I believe what we're after is control.
00:10:06.037 --> 00:10:08.496
We didn't have it when we were growing up, many of us.
00:10:08.606 --> 00:10:14.309
and we think that venturing out on our own to do something, meaningful.
00:10:14.309 --> 00:10:15.720
And that can mean a lot of things.
00:10:15.725 --> 00:10:19.519
It doesn't mean I'm out to change the world, or a person is out to change the world.
00:10:19.524 --> 00:10:31.570
They might just be selling widgets, but they're excited and passionate about their widgets and they believe by paving their own path that they will find something they're looking for.
00:10:32.039 --> 00:10:34.289
whatever that is, which usually they're not sure.
00:10:34.289 --> 00:10:38.705
Oftentimes it's recognition, it's people saying.
00:10:39.674 --> 00:10:43.754
You are something, you are important, you did something.
00:10:44.565 --> 00:10:53.085
Sometimes it's money, but actually it's usually what I was saying a moment ago because we weren't getting that so much growing up.
00:10:53.565 --> 00:10:55.634
So we're trying to control things.
00:10:55.639 --> 00:10:59.085
We believe we, we can create our own destiny, which we can't.
00:11:00.404 --> 00:11:01.695
We're in control of nothing.
00:11:02.294 --> 00:11:03.254
That's the truth of it.
00:11:03.254 --> 00:11:05.235
But that's what we believe as entrepreneurs.
00:11:05.745 --> 00:11:09.924
And having that, feedback is important to us.
00:11:09.924 --> 00:11:12.294
that we are something special, in this world.
00:11:12.299 --> 00:11:16.434
And, and business and entrepreneurship is a way that we think we're gonna get that.
00:11:16.975 --> 00:11:24.804
But as you said with your businesses, it doesn't get you that, you can speak to your experiences from one to the next to the next.
00:11:25.320 --> 00:11:29.184
in your case it sounds like it became darker, not lighter.
00:11:30.307 --> 00:11:30.668
Yeah.
00:11:30.717 --> 00:11:41.587
so I think most of my life I was working to build the business and it was motivated initially by the desire to prove the others, to prove to others that I could be successful too.
00:11:41.947 --> 00:11:47.947
And I wanted to prove myself to others because like you, I was bullied and I didn't fit in well with kids.
00:11:48.067 --> 00:11:53.552
And so I think there's always like that small population of kids who just don't fit in, who are weird.
00:11:53.658 --> 00:12:02.357
Are bullied, I think they're more likely to be way more successful later in life than any of the other classmates that, that's personally, at least my experience.
00:12:02.658 --> 00:12:10.789
And I think then work became a means to survive of, you know, my parents died when I was young, and so I didn't have any other option.
00:12:10.789 --> 00:12:13.049
It was, either it was work hard.
00:12:13.184 --> 00:12:15.014
Or I don't know what else.
00:12:15.044 --> 00:12:18.615
I even dropped outta high school, so it seemed like I had everything against me.
00:12:18.615 --> 00:12:24.914
And also when your back is against the wall, you know, one of the biggest questions that I get from people is how were you successful?
00:12:25.184 --> 00:12:32.644
And my answer is, just like the Spanish conquistador who landed in South America and burnt all his ships, I was backed into a corner.
00:12:32.674 --> 00:12:36.575
I had no other option other than to go in one direction.
00:12:36.934 --> 00:12:41.164
And that's not advice people like to hear, but that's my experience.
00:12:41.164 --> 00:12:48.875
I would not have worked as hard and pursued the success that I've obtained without having my back against the wall.
00:12:49.495 --> 00:12:50.004
Yeah.
00:12:50.451 --> 00:13:06.827
Well, you know, it's interesting because, we hope, and I know a lot of young entrepreneurs listen to this podcast and a lot of young people and, our hope is that one can realize that Maybe we don't have to look at it in those terms.
00:13:06.827 --> 00:13:10.001
and please feel free to, push back on what I'm saying.
00:13:10.721 --> 00:13:13.782
the back against the wall, it's like, it's a fight.
00:13:13.902 --> 00:13:16.211
It's like survival, right?
00:13:17.261 --> 00:13:18.942
And that's drive.
00:13:18.971 --> 00:13:20.772
There's a drive that comes with that.
00:13:20.772 --> 00:13:26.471
And you have a drive Cody inherent in you, as many entrepreneurs just do.
00:13:26.471 --> 00:13:27.282
It's natural.
00:13:27.312 --> 00:13:28.392
And we talk about that.
00:13:28.392 --> 00:13:32.562
The first discovery that we talk about in our book is, I am driven.
00:13:32.567 --> 00:13:33.581
You are driven.
00:13:34.022 --> 00:13:38.004
So, we get this, sometimes it's a chip on our shoulders.
00:13:38.004 --> 00:13:43.434
Sometimes there's outside forces that are driving us to show others that, that we can be successful.
00:13:43.434 --> 00:13:45.414
There's a survival aspect to it.
00:13:45.985 --> 00:13:51.125
But we would contend you don't have to, doesn't need to be that way.
00:13:51.455 --> 00:13:54.154
The drive can still be there without that edge.
00:13:54.889 --> 00:14:00.830
And it can actually come with inner peace and it's all about reframing how you look at things.
00:14:01.659 --> 00:14:05.350
And I'll pause there, but then I can get a little bit more deeper into it if you want me to.
00:14:05.350 --> 00:14:11.470
But I wanna make sure you're tracking and if there are any questions you want to ask about that or if challenges.
00:14:12.461 --> 00:14:12.761
Yeah.
00:14:12.761 --> 00:14:26.388
well, mentioned a study in your book from 2015 by Michael Freeman, who showed that there is a mental health issue amongst entrepreneurs as he found like 49% of entrepreneurs had dealt with some kind of mental health challenge.
00:14:26.957 --> 00:14:38.658
And as he describes in the study that people who are on the energetic, motivated, and creative side are both more likely to be an entrepreneur, but also more likely to have strong emotional states.
00:14:38.988 --> 00:14:43.337
And I think that speaks to the challenges that a lot of entrepreneurs face.
00:14:43.788 --> 00:14:50.628
And you mentioned these discoveries, and I know that that is at the beginning of the book before you go into the 10 disciplines.
00:14:50.837 --> 00:14:53.894
So I would love for you to explain what are these discoveries?
00:14:53.945 --> 00:14:56.761
what are the, three and, what do they mean individually?
00:14:57.053 --> 00:15:12.989
so first to the study, which I'm so glad you referenced that, I appreciate that because, yes, 49% have that and 51% don't, you know, so some people they don't have that, but there's still things to look at, from the inside and especially when you go into entrepreneurship.
00:15:13.499 --> 00:15:18.668
so I want, you know, for the audience, please keep that in mind, because these things are still important.
00:15:18.938 --> 00:15:21.428
Even if you're not in that 49%.
00:15:22.038 --> 00:15:40.995
so the first thing is that you are driven and, there's a small percentage of the population that is, and thank goodness by the way, 'cause if, could you imagine everybody in the world, there's something a little over 8 billion human beings, imagine, 50 or 80% or a hundred percent of them being driven, it'd be a crazy place.
00:15:41.416 --> 00:15:53.352
So basically speaking, there's around 10% of the population is set to be driven in all sorts of modalities, you know, professions and all these kinds of things.
00:15:53.663 --> 00:15:56.332
4% are entrepreneurial.
00:15:56.602 --> 00:15:56.873
Okay?
00:15:56.878 --> 00:15:58.552
So 4% of 8 billion.
00:15:58.552 --> 00:16:01.523
You're in a very small category.
00:16:02.232 --> 00:16:03.493
So no know that.
00:16:04.423 --> 00:16:06.822
Next thing to know is that it's a blessing.
00:16:07.153 --> 00:16:10.092
To be driven, but it's also a curse.
00:16:11.023 --> 00:16:15.013
And there's some good stuff that comes along with this and some bad stuff.
00:16:15.013 --> 00:16:17.863
and we have to accept it and we have to embrace it.
00:16:17.893 --> 00:16:21.582
And we most importantly have to manage it.
00:16:22.482 --> 00:16:23.533
We have to manage it.
00:16:23.533 --> 00:16:32.895
So the blessing part of it is we're born with this superhuman stamina, this strength, this resilience that we have.
00:16:33.495 --> 00:16:36.706
And we are the creators of most things on this planet.
00:16:37.515 --> 00:16:43.365
The driven entrepreneur, the things that we use, the widgets, you know, that's where it comes from.
00:16:43.605 --> 00:16:55.025
So it's a blessing, but the curse is we do a lot of damage to ourselves and the other people around us because we have a certain intensity that they don't have.
00:16:56.510 --> 00:16:57.681
We don't understand it.
00:16:58.520 --> 00:17:00.441
We don't understand why they don't have that.
00:17:00.441 --> 00:17:01.250
We don't get it.
00:17:01.860 --> 00:17:07.164
there's a great book, when you're finished with ours, we encourage you pick up a book called Driven by Dr.
00:17:07.164 --> 00:17:08.065
Doug Brackman.
00:17:08.184 --> 00:17:14.095
He writes in the book, and I'm gonna read this 'cause I want to get it wrong, it's actually genetics.
00:17:14.099 --> 00:17:19.674
So he did some studies on this and there's a D two, D four gene that has a flaw in it.
00:17:19.704 --> 00:17:26.005
The receptors don't fire, so we never fully feel rewarded or enough.
00:17:26.934 --> 00:17:35.845
Your genetic difference can lead you to feel there is something wrong with you and the associated shame can create a hellish existence.
00:17:36.144 --> 00:17:38.755
The driven are at risk for addictions.
00:17:38.755 --> 00:17:40.525
They believe will provide relief.
00:17:40.914 --> 00:17:46.244
They're innately pulled toward the success they believe will leave them feeling rewarded.
00:17:46.980 --> 00:17:49.337
Finally, the driven, are different.
00:17:49.728 --> 00:17:56.147
They're wired to feel they're never enough and it's never enough, and they're always looking for something better.
00:17:56.147 --> 00:18:01.067
So maybe some of the driven entrepreneurs listening to this will relate.
00:18:01.127 --> 00:18:07.998
And then we found, we were having a conversation with a friend of ours, Justin Breen, who works with entrepreneurs.
00:18:07.998 --> 00:18:24.857
And he shared with us that he had yet to meet an entrepreneur who hasn't experienced one of the following bankruptcy or potential bankruptcy, heightened levels of anxiety, depression, or traumatic experiences as a child or young adult.
00:18:25.038 --> 00:18:28.607
And as we were discussing this, Gino and I threw in addiction.
00:18:29.327 --> 00:18:35.221
And addiction is doing something compulsively in excess that usually is not good for you.
00:18:35.250 --> 00:18:42.704
Like work, food, porn, drugs, alcohol, gambling, tv, social media, gaming, shopping, just to name a few.
00:18:43.214 --> 00:18:46.755
And so these are ways we numb ourselves.
00:18:47.518 --> 00:18:54.117
And work is one of the key ones that we, don't pay attention to because we're heralded for how hard we work.
00:18:54.327 --> 00:19:07.718
I think you mentioned Hu hustle culture that you know earlier, people are impressed with how hard we work and how successful we're becoming, and it's an escape for us.
00:19:08.167 --> 00:19:09.188
It truly is.
00:19:09.528 --> 00:19:12.077
so that's discovery number one.
00:19:12.077 --> 00:19:18.738
I am driven and it's important to be aware of it and to manage it most importantly.
00:19:18.738 --> 00:19:26.540
So I'll pause there and if there's anything you wanna ask or question about that please do, or I'll move on to the second discovery.
00:19:27.134 --> 00:19:35.346
would just add that I remember there was a recent episode by Huberman, it might be episode, number 55 in which he talks about stress and fear.
00:19:35.616 --> 00:19:45.517
And what resonated with me is that fear is amongst one of the most powerful motivators that we can have, and it allows us to, to do amazing things.
00:19:45.787 --> 00:19:52.086
But simultaneously, it is probably one of the worst in terms of our physical and emotional health.
00:19:52.537 --> 00:20:02.696
And that it is possible while it seems that we gravitate towards fear, like the fear of running outta money, the fear of what if I'm not successful, the fear of supporting my family.
00:20:02.906 --> 00:20:10.420
the fear of looking ridiculous if I fail and those can allow us to make some monumental achievements.
00:20:10.690 --> 00:20:15.160
It also really dampens our own emotional and physical health.
00:20:15.400 --> 00:20:27.309
And so while it is easy to default to that fear response, it is possible to find that that positive, that that ability, that we're being pulled towards the future.
00:20:27.700 --> 00:20:30.656
And I feel like that's definitely where I am at right now.
00:20:30.656 --> 00:20:34.017
I'm trying to go from surviving to thriving as one would say.
00:20:34.426 --> 00:20:48.287
And there was a book that I feel like I probably mentioned every other episode is called The Second Mountain by David Brooks, who really describes this exact same scenario with somebody who becomes successful.
00:20:48.557 --> 00:20:57.682
As get to that first mountain and you just feel empty and then you spend the rest of your life trying to get to the second mountain, which is having an impact, which is, being a part of a community.
00:20:57.842 --> 00:21:10.990
and that's really truly where you can find that deep sense of satisfaction because otherwise, as you say, it seems that, whether it's genetic or, or what have you, we can be so easily on this rollercoaster ride of it's never enough.
00:21:11.430 --> 00:21:21.923
And that's a default human state as far as I'm concerned, across, fields and industries and professions, is that if you get a million dollars, well then you need to get $10 million.
00:21:22.193 --> 00:21:29.503
And if you get, say, 5,000 views on a video, now you need to get 15,000 views on a video or you're a failure.
00:21:29.773 --> 00:21:33.644
And that seems to be a hundred percent across the board, expression.
00:21:33.943 --> 00:21:40.973
And it can be really difficult to pull back from that to not associate ourselves, our ego from, what our current success is.
00:21:41.740 --> 00:21:47.259
You're so thoughtful, Cody, and you evoke so many things for me in your remarks.
00:21:48.250 --> 00:21:56.009
So I wanna start with this idea about the mountains because we would contend there is no mountain.
00:21:56.763 --> 00:21:57.544
There just isn't.
00:21:58.294 --> 00:22:04.054
You're on a path and so there's no mountain to climb and there's no second mountain to climb.
00:22:04.054 --> 00:22:05.223
with all due respect.
00:22:05.223 --> 00:22:06.064
I haven't read the book.
00:22:06.064 --> 00:22:07.443
It sounds amazing, by the way.
00:22:08.064 --> 00:22:17.882
but, that's the mindset that we hope that many will get into, because we damage ourself climbing that mountain.
00:22:18.679 --> 00:22:23.730
That's where a lot of the, you know, you, referenced Huber Man's, podcast, on that.
00:22:23.730 --> 00:22:26.160
I had, I'd seen it, but I didn't listen to it.
00:22:26.789 --> 00:22:30.160
and the fear comes with anxiety.
00:22:31.390 --> 00:22:42.019
, it comes along with so much that , if you believe in the mind-body connection, which if you're listening to Huberman, you do, you're damaging yourself and you don't even realize it.
00:22:42.019 --> 00:22:44.390
So wherever it is that you're trying to get to.
00:22:45.019 --> 00:22:57.775
And why it's never enough, which I always like to ask people they get to a certain plateau, so to speak, and they're ready for the next thing and they say, I can't, it's never enough.
00:22:57.779 --> 00:23:00.835
I always like to say, what is that all about?
00:23:01.281 --> 00:23:02.662
Question mark.
00:23:03.561 --> 00:23:07.192
Have you ever paused to think about what that is about?
00:23:07.251 --> 00:23:08.332
Why is that?
00:23:08.761 --> 00:23:26.306
I need you to go like 3, 4, 5 layers deep on that because , you might think it's about providing for your family, but Cody, you and I know you can provide for a family on much less than a million or 10 million or 20 or a hundred million or et cetera.
00:23:26.306 --> 00:23:26.935
Keep going.
00:23:27.506 --> 00:23:29.576
You know, you, you can do that.
00:23:29.905 --> 00:23:36.405
It'd be a different lifestyle, but you could do it and, by the way, I'm all about.
00:23:36.990 --> 00:23:39.570
being successful and having wealth.
00:23:39.625 --> 00:23:40.796
I'm not saying don't do that.
00:23:40.826 --> 00:23:41.695
Please go do that.
00:23:41.695 --> 00:23:43.195
I just want you to do it with peace.
00:23:43.586 --> 00:23:49.371
I don't want you to, damage yourself mentally and physically in the meantime.
00:23:50.203 --> 00:24:03.570
so, okay, I'm gonna pause there and I'm gonna go to discovery number two, which are decisions are made out of love or fear, and I'm glad you brought up fear with your reference to, Andrew Huberman.
00:24:04.500 --> 00:24:06.601
love is from our heart.
00:24:06.780 --> 00:24:08.760
Fear from our ego.
00:24:09.431 --> 00:24:13.540
decisions aren't all we're referencing here, but it's the way we say it.
00:24:14.260 --> 00:24:19.090
It's emotions, it's feelings, it's thoughts.
00:24:20.006 --> 00:24:24.056
So it's tuning into what's happening with you right now.
00:24:24.691 --> 00:24:28.381
am I feeling, let's use a feeling.
00:24:28.381 --> 00:24:30.030
Am I feeling anxious?
00:24:30.361 --> 00:24:31.921
Why am I feeling anxious?
00:24:32.340 --> 00:24:36.361
Is that feeling coming from something I'm fearing?
00:24:36.780 --> 00:24:39.931
Is my ego in play right now?
00:24:40.681 --> 00:24:45.300
The ego that you want to, I mean, ego has good and bad things, I guess you could say.
00:24:45.780 --> 00:24:56.760
It has a kind of continuum, so it's not all bad, but you have to know what part of your ego is showing up at this moment and why you're feeling, why you're feeling.
00:24:58.201 --> 00:25:13.941
And once you understand that you have that awareness, then you can use different ways, which we could talk about different ways to bring yourself to the present moment, understand the feeling.
00:25:14.818 --> 00:25:25.542
And understand how to shift that feeling so you bring it from dark to light is a way to say it, which brings some level of peace, inner peace inside.
00:25:26.316 --> 00:25:31.455
And that's a continual practice that we go through, on a daily basis.
00:25:31.455 --> 00:25:34.066
Many, many, many, many, many times throughout our days.
00:25:34.786 --> 00:25:38.762
But the more we, do this and we have awareness around it, it becomes more common.
00:25:38.762 --> 00:25:52.202
And, and I guess for a lack of a better way of saying it, easier because we want to come from a place of love and in business, this is, I think, important for especially a lot of young entrepreneurs.
00:25:53.012 --> 00:25:56.705
Many of our decisions are coming from fear.
00:25:56.705 --> 00:25:58.236
They're coming from our ego.
00:25:59.012 --> 00:26:02.103
Again, it could be things like.
00:26:02.627 --> 00:26:13.528
Wanting to have our business be a certain size because we think that's going to show the world something, and we're afraid to fail.
00:26:13.557 --> 00:26:24.268
So we put every ounce of our energy into it so other people can recognize us as successful.
00:26:25.111 --> 00:26:27.451
That's fear-based love-based.
00:26:27.451 --> 00:26:31.290
As we build our business from our heart, we don't care what other people think.
00:26:31.651 --> 00:26:40.018
We make decisions within our business that fuel our inside our true self.
00:26:41.248 --> 00:26:46.968
What really matters we're not being affected by societal expectations.
00:26:47.458 --> 00:26:54.238
sometimes those come from families Schools we went to, or circles we run in things of that nature.
00:26:55.173 --> 00:27:20.278
So maybe we have a situation where we're trying to expand our business and we notice a competitor is doing X, Y, or Z, but we're really focused on A, B, C, and we're really damn good at A, B, C, but we see competitor doing X, Y, Z, and all of a sudden we say, oh my God, we gotta start doing X, Y, Z in addition to A, B, C, which is gonna take away focus and how great we are at A, B, C.
00:27:20.788 --> 00:27:25.887
But competitors doing it, and I don't wanna lose ground, I'm afraid.
00:27:26.458 --> 00:27:27.897
I'm afraid we're gonna lose ground.
00:27:28.107 --> 00:27:34.948
I gotta jump on that bandwagon and get into that sector or that product line or whatever it is you're doing.
00:27:35.397 --> 00:27:37.708
Also, that's a fear-based decision.
00:27:37.887 --> 00:27:38.938
How about people?
00:27:39.928 --> 00:27:47.893
You know, sometimes we have people in our organizations, . Where they're really good at something, but they are not a cultural fit.
00:27:49.633 --> 00:27:53.143
But we don't wanna rock the boat because they're good at what they're doing.
00:27:53.442 --> 00:27:55.482
Maybe they're a great salesperson, by the way.
00:27:55.512 --> 00:28:07.883
That's scary when you have a great salesperson who does not fit your culture to be able to come from love on that culture's, number one, to, to let that person go, that's scary.
00:28:07.913 --> 00:28:12.262
That's fear when you hold onto them and make excuses why.
00:28:12.742 --> 00:28:15.442
That's fear-based decision making in business.
00:28:16.208 --> 00:28:27.502
Yeah, I loved your question on this in the book where you asked the reader if you knew your significant other, your best friend or top employee would be better off without you, would you let them go?
00:28:27.803 --> 00:28:29.393
Could you take your hooks out of them?
00:28:29.692 --> 00:28:36.323
If you answer no, you are attached and you're hanging onto them, you are making a fear-based decision.
00:28:36.667 --> 00:28:38.587
And that's not good for them.
00:28:38.587 --> 00:28:39.817
It's not good for you.
00:28:40.417 --> 00:28:42.492
And that's operating from a place of fear.
00:28:42.903 --> 00:28:43.833
Yeah, yeah.
00:28:43.893 --> 00:28:45.032
Take it outside of business.
00:28:45.032 --> 00:28:46.472
Like, thank you for reading that.
00:28:46.923 --> 00:28:47.373
You know?
00:28:47.423 --> 00:28:55.292
boy, it's tough when you have, somebody close to you in your life, that you're attached to, and, you know, could you do that?
00:28:55.343 --> 00:28:56.627
could you let them go?
00:28:56.633 --> 00:28:58.367
If that's what's best for them?
00:28:59.538 --> 00:29:03.438
Might not feel best for you, but is that what's best for them?
00:29:04.577 --> 00:29:07.698
That's a very, very hard and deep question.
00:29:08.711 --> 00:29:11.530
But yes, we have our hooks and people, and they have their hooks in us.
00:29:11.530 --> 00:29:12.550
Some people too.
00:29:12.971 --> 00:29:14.800
That's an important thing to recognize.
00:29:15.556 --> 00:29:17.746
I think it's, a harder question to ask.
00:29:17.986 --> 00:29:21.316
How can we cultivate that sense of will?
00:29:21.526 --> 00:29:35.193
Because there's so often, I mean, whether I make a decision and I know others, you end up being in this, situation where you either know somebody's not right, or you know what the right thing is that you should do, but then you just don't want to do it.
00:29:35.193 --> 00:29:39.983
You don't want to go drive two hours to, your friend's wedding.
00:29:39.983 --> 00:29:44.115
And, you don't want to let go of, a person that might be your next partner.
00:29:44.506 --> 00:29:50.865
And yet, deep down inside, you know, it's not gonna work out, but you're too afraid to break that connection.
00:29:51.195 --> 00:29:53.441
And I've definitely been there and then I end up.
00:29:53.711 --> 00:30:01.423
Making a decision by not making a decision, and then things just kind of linger and then 99% of the time it doesn't work out.
00:30:01.634 --> 00:30:05.354
But I was still afraid to make that decision to let them go.
00:30:05.804 --> 00:30:10.784
How do you cult, I know this is a difficult question to ask, but how do you cultivate that?
00:30:10.814 --> 00:30:16.574
Because I think it's easy to know what the right decision is, but it's so much more difficult to act on it.
00:30:16.709 --> 00:30:17.098
Yeah.
00:30:17.669 --> 00:30:34.598
So, you know, the way we write about it in the book is, the first thing under discovery two decisions are made out of love or fear is this recognition that your true self is in there.
00:30:34.989 --> 00:30:36.909
Your true self is in there.
00:30:37.479 --> 00:30:45.159
And what I wanna share with the audience and with you is what that means, what your true self means.
00:30:45.669 --> 00:30:53.824
And I think by understanding that your audience will have a better idea of what I'm talking about.
00:30:53.824 --> 00:30:55.473
So this is the real you.
00:30:55.965 --> 00:30:58.605
It's the most authentic version of who you are.
00:30:58.875 --> 00:31:04.276
It's unshaped by societal expectations, professional roles, or social masks.
00:31:04.576 --> 00:31:11.655
It's the core identity that remains constant beneath the various hats that you wear in different areas of your life.
00:31:11.655 --> 00:31:22.965
And it's typically buried behind your ego, your personality, and the suit of armor that you have developed over your lifetime due to pain, trauma, and conditioning.
00:31:23.086 --> 00:31:32.385
And freeing your true self allows you to be authentic, free spirited, liberated, unconstrained, unbounded, unapologetic.
00:31:32.836 --> 00:31:49.405
It allows you to realize your full potential, live in alignment with your values, your passions, your beliefs and desires rather than conforming to societal norms or external expectations, and bringing the best version of yourself to everything in your life.
00:31:49.705 --> 00:31:53.455
And your true self wants to be free, and it can be free.
00:31:53.979 --> 00:31:59.469
When you are free and you are fully your true self, you begin to experience inner peace.
00:31:59.469 --> 00:32:04.769
Like I've been mentioning, you have some bliss, this feeling of bliss, this feeling of, love.
00:32:05.739 --> 00:32:07.419
it's this opportunity.
00:32:07.929 --> 00:32:14.003
This opportunity is to remove everything that is preventing you from being your true self.
00:32:14.304 --> 00:32:19.374
This allows for you to be more creative, intuitive, impactful, and in flow.
00:32:19.493 --> 00:32:22.253
And this is how you'll shine more brightly.
00:32:22.253 --> 00:32:29.923
So with that description, this understanding that that is in you inherently, it's there.
00:32:30.433 --> 00:32:32.564
So your true self is in there.
00:32:33.044 --> 00:32:37.201
And the next thing that we talk about is.
00:32:37.201 --> 00:32:39.300
That you are pure energy.
00:32:39.401 --> 00:32:42.671
And for some people that's really easy thing to understand.
00:32:42.675 --> 00:32:44.320
For others, it's kind of confusing.
00:32:44.681 --> 00:32:47.471
So wherever you are on that continuum, just stick with me.
00:32:47.471 --> 00:33:00.221
I'm gonna do an oversimplification of it, which is we as people are made up of energy, we're made up of atoms and protons and cells and they're constantly moving around in us.
00:33:00.490 --> 00:33:03.550
It's energy that's, moving within us.
00:33:03.971 --> 00:33:13.750
I always like to say, have you ever met somebody, had a conversation with them and when you're done and they walk away, you think to yourself, boy, that person had a really great energy.
00:33:14.050 --> 00:33:16.780
Or you might say that person had a weird energy.
00:33:17.141 --> 00:33:20.431
That's actually an actual energy you are picking up on.
00:33:20.520 --> 00:33:22.861
Not physical energy, not excitement.
00:33:23.242 --> 00:33:27.712
It's a vibe is another way of saying it's an energy that they're exuding.
00:33:28.435 --> 00:33:34.932
So we are pure energy and this energy can get blocked.
00:33:35.262 --> 00:33:35.682
Okay?
00:33:36.133 --> 00:33:47.202
So it's blocked in ways that have to do with things in circumstances and challenges and all kinds of things that have happened to us in our life at some point.
00:33:47.202 --> 00:33:51.375
And they aren't, always traumatic things, they're just things.
00:33:51.868 --> 00:33:58.992
And sometimes that energy gets blocked and that causes us to make decisions from fear.
00:33:59.512 --> 00:34:04.084
If we can learn to be aware that I'm blocked right now, I'm stuck.
00:34:04.114 --> 00:34:05.584
Some people say I'm stuck.
00:34:06.038 --> 00:34:08.358
You know, some people say, I, I can't get clear.
00:34:09.068 --> 00:34:10.898
If you can become aware of that.
00:34:11.501 --> 00:34:16.411
You can begin to work on unstuck yourself, unblocking yourself.
00:34:17.114 --> 00:34:38.054
You can do this by slowing down, by bringing your attention to the present moment, bringing your attention to your body, noticing sensations in your body as you think about this decision or this feeling, or this emotion, or this thought that you're having and noticing in your body what you're feeling.
00:34:38.173 --> 00:34:40.873
Some people feel tense in their shoulders.
00:34:40.994 --> 00:34:43.003
Some people feel tightness in their chest.
00:34:43.184 --> 00:34:46.161
Some people feel like a something in their gut.
00:34:47.360 --> 00:34:55.403
And if you could breathe into those areas of your body until it sort of dissipates, goes away, you're clearing this block.
00:34:56.514 --> 00:34:59.603
And when you clear that block, you think more clearly.
00:35:00.293 --> 00:35:05.903
And you can begin to come from a place of love, from your heart, from your inside.
00:35:06.521 --> 00:35:13.300
So it's a way of helping us gain clarity so we can make our decisions from love and not fear.
00:35:14.188 --> 00:35:27.713
Do you think that it's possible to lead with love and not fear from somebody who hasn't experienced that?
00:35:28.563 --> 00:35:29.402
Let, me rephrase that.
00:35:29.402 --> 00:35:36.902
So I look at it from this perspective of, you see all these videos of older people that end up telling you what their regrets are.
00:35:36.902 --> 00:35:39.572
Like I, I wish I had spent more time with friends and family.
00:35:39.713 --> 00:35:49.565
wish I didn't work as much, but yet they aren't able to have the gratitude and the life that they have unless they had worked as hard as they did.
00:35:49.746 --> 00:35:56.826
So it's almost kind of a conundrum in, some respects, and it's also this concept of like, say helicopter parenting.
00:35:56.856 --> 00:36:03.516
Like you don't want to overprotect your child because the best way to learn from your mistakes is to make them.
00:36:03.936 --> 00:36:12.378
And I just wonder whether it's really possible to help teach people don't lead from this fear mentality.
00:36:12.739 --> 00:36:17.574
have you ever met anybody who only leads from like a love mentality that's an entrepreneurship?
00:36:17.574 --> 00:36:20.507
Or is that just, very rare and, not something that's very common?
00:36:21.092 --> 00:36:26.652
There are organizations out there, Such as the Small Giants community and the Tugboat Institute.
00:36:27.193 --> 00:36:29.563
Conscious Capitalism is another one.
00:36:29.983 --> 00:36:35.472
And these are areas where leaders and entrepreneurs are working on this.
00:36:35.739 --> 00:36:42.039
and as always, you have such wise comments and questions and evoke many thoughts for me.
00:36:42.278 --> 00:36:52.898
So I wanna first start with this idea of this older person who says these regrets and so on and so forth, but their hard work got them to where they are today did I understand that part?
00:36:52.903 --> 00:36:53.199
Correct?
00:36:53.898 --> 00:37:09.601
Yeah, I think some ways you can have regret over some actions of your past, but simultaneously it was those actions that allowed you to have the level of happiness that you might have in that moment, if that makes sense.
00:37:10.365 --> 00:37:11.115
Yeah.
00:37:11.175 --> 00:37:12.496
Well, I don't know.
00:37:12.496 --> 00:37:14.235
And neither does the person know.
00:37:14.543 --> 00:37:18.652
If they had come from a place of love, how their life would've turned out.
00:37:18.922 --> 00:37:19.822
We could never know.
00:37:19.822 --> 00:37:22.282
'cause you can't go back and you can't go do that.
00:37:22.492 --> 00:37:29.027
And so, when someone is saying, I, should have done this or I could have done that, but I'm happy today, or whatever.
00:37:29.244 --> 00:37:32.483
gives this sense that, that was all good.
00:37:32.574 --> 00:37:39.204
Which it is because we're on a journey, but we just don't know what, how things really would've turned out.
00:37:39.724 --> 00:37:45.333
and I'll speak to, something that became very clear for me in 2006.
00:37:45.934 --> 00:37:50.614
You know, I had sold my business in 2004 and I bought it back in 2006 after 18 months.
00:37:50.914 --> 00:37:56.838
And was wiped out and I couldn't keep doing it the way I was doing it.
00:37:57.349 --> 00:38:00.199
And it didn't, it never felt right to me.
00:38:00.498 --> 00:38:02.599
It just never felt right.
00:38:03.228 --> 00:38:05.329
And I just was exhausted by it.
00:38:05.329 --> 00:38:08.449
And I said, if I'm gonna buy my business back, I'm not doing it that way anymore.
00:38:08.974 --> 00:38:13.233
I'm just not gonna be all worked up all the time afraid of everything.
00:38:13.764 --> 00:38:17.963
And I'm just gonna come from a place of love and I'm gonna listen to my, intuition.
00:38:18.114 --> 00:38:22.284
I'm gonna get quiet and take my time making decisions.
00:38:22.724 --> 00:38:24.494
I'm not gonna be quick anymore.
00:38:25.003 --> 00:38:28.903
And I am gonna care for these people like they're my family.
00:38:29.391 --> 00:38:35.900
And sometimes there's gonna be decisions that aren't gonna seem to make business sense, but I'm gonna make 'em anyway.
00:38:36.590 --> 00:38:42.567
And that's what I did from 2006 on I ran the company from my heart.
00:38:42.867 --> 00:38:45.536
Every decision I made was from my heart.
00:38:46.047 --> 00:38:52.916
I kept people on for longer because they were beautiful, beautiful people, and they needed that runway.
00:38:53.597 --> 00:38:56.117
And I would work with them to get them in places.
00:38:56.117 --> 00:38:58.422
we created something my company, image One.
00:38:58.722 --> 00:39:10.791
Called mindful transitions where we would encourage our team members to come to leadership, whoever was leading them, and say, I'm not fulfilled in my job.
00:39:11.362 --> 00:39:13.072
I wanna do something else.
00:39:13.311 --> 00:39:20.791
I don't know what it is, but I know it's not this and there's no place in the company for me to go to fulfill it.
00:39:21.090 --> 00:39:25.320
And so we would give them as much time as needed to figure it out.
00:39:25.320 --> 00:39:26.670
We would work with them.
00:39:27.240 --> 00:39:29.010
Where do you wanna be in 10 years?
00:39:29.130 --> 00:39:30.570
What are your passions?
00:39:30.990 --> 00:39:33.661
Go investigate, take time, we'll pay you.
00:39:34.021 --> 00:39:36.420
Go take time and figure some things out.
00:39:36.900 --> 00:39:38.971
We'll open up our networks to you.
00:39:39.240 --> 00:39:44.760
We'll allow you to go explore and find your passion because I want you to be happy.
00:39:44.760 --> 00:39:47.061
I don't need you to be at our company.
00:39:47.721 --> 00:39:51.251
. To do what you're so great at doing, but to be miserable.
00:39:51.403 --> 00:39:53.014
don't want that for that person.
00:39:53.380 --> 00:39:55.630
I want them to live a happy life.
00:39:56.244 --> 00:39:59.184
We also instituted something called a happy survey.
00:39:59.454 --> 00:40:06.543
It's like 80 questions that we ask our team members every year about the totality of their lives.
00:40:06.934 --> 00:40:11.974
For example, what are the people like that are closest to them?
00:40:12.483 --> 00:40:16.114
Are they happy people or unhappy people?
00:40:16.923 --> 00:40:22.567
When you have unhappy people around you, you are likely to be unhappy.
00:40:22.987 --> 00:40:34.371
So we help point these things out to our team, and then we create programs that help them make changes in their life so they can have a happier life.
00:40:34.670 --> 00:40:38.780
These are just examples of how you can lead from your heart.
00:40:39.340 --> 00:40:48.356
and course as a byproduct of it all, you're successful, but it doesn't mean you're always going to be successful.
00:40:48.836 --> 00:40:56.614
We write about in the book, in business and in life for that matter, but in business there's a 10 year business cycle.
00:40:56.614 --> 00:41:00.534
In general, you could go back in history every 10 years.
00:41:00.684 --> 00:41:04.793
A business is going to have two fantastic years.
00:41:05.393 --> 00:41:10.193
They're gonna have six really great years, and they're gonna have two years That could literally put them outta business.
00:41:11.123 --> 00:41:15.893
And your ability to be prepared for those two years, that could put you outta business.
00:41:16.434 --> 00:41:23.813
That says a lot about leading from your heart and a lot about how thoughtful you are in running your company.
00:41:24.233 --> 00:41:28.943
So too often entrepreneurs get really excited about the two years.
00:41:29.543 --> 00:41:33.353
That they're killing it and they think that's the default from that point forward.
00:41:35.153 --> 00:41:37.043
But for most businesses, that isn't the case.
00:41:37.043 --> 00:41:43.253
There's certainly businesses that I'm sure you or any others could challenge me on and they're out there, but most of them aren't.
00:41:43.434 --> 00:41:44.693
That's not the case.
00:41:45.384 --> 00:41:50.753
And I'll give you a great example of my company Image One, we provide managed print services.
00:41:51.534 --> 00:41:59.614
it's copiers servicing copiers and printers and things like that to companies that have employees that are in their offices printing.
00:42:00.454 --> 00:42:04.393
And when the pandemic came, that was really scary.
00:42:04.793 --> 00:42:09.896
And we had a person on our team who's a technician and we had a Zoom call.
00:42:09.927 --> 00:42:17.333
'cause obviously we couldn't go out all hands zoom call and we were just talking about what was happening.
00:42:17.820 --> 00:42:19.471
and The uncertainty of the future.
00:42:19.800 --> 00:42:29.490
And this technician asked if he could speak and he gave a 10 minute motivational speech that not one of our leadership team members could have ever given.
00:42:29.490 --> 00:42:32.550
It was so from the heart, we're gonna get through this together.
00:42:32.550 --> 00:42:33.900
All we have to do is band together.
00:42:34.380 --> 00:42:35.130
This whole thing.
00:42:35.563 --> 00:42:40.813
That's when you run a company from your heart, that's the kind of people that show up in your company.
00:42:41.251 --> 00:42:49.465
they come in and they are the ones that are inspiring, which is so much more beautiful than you or your leadership team having to do it.
00:42:49.952 --> 00:42:52.802
It's when the people are bought into everything that you're doing.
00:42:52.802 --> 00:42:57.422
And it feels so important to them because it is, they really care about it.
00:42:57.452 --> 00:42:59.041
'cause they know it's coming from the heart.
00:42:59.041 --> 00:43:00.692
Every decision's coming from the heart.
00:43:01.202 --> 00:43:02.402
So those are examples.
00:43:02.402 --> 00:43:04.237
And I stepped away from the company.
00:43:04.237 --> 00:43:05.586
We created succession plan.
00:43:05.586 --> 00:43:06.876
I don't run that company anymore.
00:43:06.876 --> 00:43:09.336
I started this business, the 10 disciplines.
00:43:09.902 --> 00:43:13.262
where we teach people all these concepts that you and I are talking about.
00:43:14.081 --> 00:43:16.931
and letting go, was something that came from my heart.
00:43:17.572 --> 00:43:24.052
I ran the company for 30 years and, letting go was the right thing for the future of the company.
00:43:24.731 --> 00:43:31.298
Many entrepreneurs have their whole identity wrapped up in everything they're doing, and they can't get away from it.
00:43:31.688 --> 00:43:38.739
You know, everybody knows them as the person who was the founder of the x, y, Z company and da da da and all that kinda stuff.
00:43:39.128 --> 00:43:40.449
But that isn't who you are.
00:43:40.746 --> 00:43:42.336
That's nothing about who you are.
00:43:43.336 --> 00:43:44.806
That's just something you do.
00:43:46.608 --> 00:43:48.349
Yeah, I still identify with that.
00:43:48.353 --> 00:43:49.548
I sold the company.
00:43:49.579 --> 00:43:56.699
It had over a thousand employees, and I'm still left wondering and guessing is that gonna be the most success I ever have?
00:43:57.164 --> 00:44:05.067
And having those doubts of feeling like I need to have something that's more successful than the last one, or also I'm not worthy.
00:44:05.416 --> 00:44:07.427
and I know that that's untrue.
00:44:07.757 --> 00:44:12.452
And yet those thoughts still exist and I know that the worst.
00:44:12.461 --> 00:44:17.231
Time for any founder or entrepreneur is after you sell your company.
00:44:17.652 --> 00:44:26.081
In many respects, it's like, how I like to compare is that the person who tells themselves that they're gonna work hard now, and then they're gonna retire and enjoy life later.
00:44:26.351 --> 00:44:29.351
And that's the person who ends up being a Walmart greeter.
00:44:29.621 --> 00:44:38.501
Not because they need the money, but because they retired and realized just how empty their life was and how attached they were to their job.
00:44:38.831 --> 00:44:41.561
And so they needed to find something to fill their time.
00:44:41.891 --> 00:44:51.731
And as an entrepreneur, you end up stuck in this rat race of wanting to build another business and really comparing yourself to the last success.
00:44:51.972 --> 00:44:55.032
And that is really, really tough to pull yourself out of that.
00:44:55.362 --> 00:45:00.231
And that's a place I know myself and many other entrepreneurs, share a perspective.
00:45:00.342 --> 00:45:00.762
Yeah.
00:45:01.052 --> 00:45:03.391
Build your next business from the heart.
00:45:03.601 --> 00:45:04.172
You know?
00:45:04.422 --> 00:45:07.242
there's nothing that you need to do.
00:45:07.271 --> 00:45:14.476
A person that needs to do to have something be more successful, because what does that even mean?
00:45:15.266 --> 00:45:19.550
what does it mean a thousand employees, by the way, congratulations.
00:45:20.030 --> 00:45:20.871
That's amazing.
00:45:21.201 --> 00:45:22.077
It really is.
00:45:22.590 --> 00:45:24.221
But you're still a person, obviously.
00:45:24.221 --> 00:45:26.380
You're just a regular person like anybody else.
00:45:26.380 --> 00:45:28.931
I mean, you put your pants on just like me, right?
00:45:30.400 --> 00:45:35.822
You know, you, you had some business success and that's wonderful, but it's not who you are.
00:45:36.358 --> 00:45:49.349
And if you're interested in business and you love it and it's fun and you start something because you think it's meaningful and you're excited about it and it's a widget that people need or use or whatever, and you have good talents there, and you can employ people great.
00:45:49.739 --> 00:45:56.030
But come from the heart in every one of your actions and make sure you do other things besides work.
00:45:56.835 --> 00:46:09.195
like having a life like we teach, knowing your 100%, and this is where you get really focused on your perfect number of hours per week and weeks per year that you're going to work.
00:46:09.735 --> 00:46:11.626
And deliver impact to this world.
00:46:11.626 --> 00:46:13.425
Deliver your value to this world.
00:46:14.025 --> 00:46:16.306
80 to 120 hours.
00:46:16.702 --> 00:46:22.346
You have no other, nothing else is happening in your life, but work, condense it down.
00:46:22.346 --> 00:46:24.056
Find the right amount of time.
00:46:24.356 --> 00:46:27.356
Maybe it's 50 or 60, which is still a lot, but hey, that's fine.
00:46:28.182 --> 00:46:31.152
And then figure out what to do outside of that.
00:46:31.713 --> 00:46:34.202
Become curious about the world.
00:46:34.659 --> 00:46:43.800
You know, when, we teach this while we say, what will you do with this time that you now have back your most valuable asset, by the way, time.
00:46:44.201 --> 00:46:47.920
What will you do at peoples, they don't know what they'll do, so we give them a list.
00:46:47.920 --> 00:46:52.001
I think it's like 50 or hundred things you could do in life.
00:46:52.391 --> 00:47:06.641
just as an example to them, of all the things you could do, if you actually need to do anything, which you don't imagine just having nothing to do, is that okay?
00:47:06.670 --> 00:47:07.630
Yes, it is.
00:47:07.690 --> 00:47:09.190
It's okay to have nothing to do.
00:47:09.431 --> 00:47:13.331
How about just going with the flow, like, okay, I have nothing to do.
00:47:13.360 --> 00:47:33.387
Maybe I'll go for a walk right now and just wander and I won't know where I'm going or when I'm gonna come back and if I'll go, if I feel drawn to it, maybe I'll stop in that bakery and have a croissant and strike up a conversation with a stranger who might become some.
00:47:34.056 --> 00:47:40.393
channel of wisdom that you could have never imagined that gives you some new insight into this world.
00:47:41.070 --> 00:47:46.139
there's so much beauty out there and we lose track of it building our businesses.
00:47:46.144 --> 00:47:58.289
We lose ourselves, we lose ourselves in our businesses, and you don't have to, you can be just as successful building an empire without killing yourself.
00:47:59.425 --> 00:48:24.152
know at, at least for my company, I was, I didn't realize how lucky I was in some respect that I had started to build my own personal brand outside of the business before selling it, because it still gave me something for my ego to identify with that I have this, and I've met other founders who just go into a deep depression once they sell the business, not realizing just how much of their identity was wrapped up in that thing.
00:48:24.483 --> 00:48:35.655
And I always love to use this analogy of, I mean, it's basically your baby and now you're selling your baby I think our brain, devotes a significant amount of its own energy to that business.
00:48:35.655 --> 00:48:37.340
Like you're dreaming about the business.
00:48:37.340 --> 00:48:38.391
You have aspirations.
00:48:38.391 --> 00:48:44.360
you dream about the future, and those are all the exact same things that you do with your significant other, your spouse.
00:48:44.601 --> 00:48:50.701
And so when you're, when you get rid of it, even if you're getting money in return, there is still an emotional, emptying.
00:48:50.731 --> 00:48:53.434
There's still, a separation your brain has to make.
00:48:53.735 --> 00:49:13.804
And so as you seem to advocate is not only have, I think your main message in some regards is to have a huge amount of mindfulness to understand when you're making a decision, whether it's letting somebody go, whether it's, making a decision on the operations of the business should you give out a benefit or not.
00:49:14.105 --> 00:49:23.105
There's obviously certain decisions you have to make from a practical business perspective, but there's other decisions that you can make, like say, how much your salary is.
00:49:23.105 --> 00:49:27.034
I mean, do you need your salary to be 500K year?
00:49:27.494 --> 00:49:34.965
If you can get by on maybe less and that money can then go towards a bonus for the employees.
00:49:35.264 --> 00:49:37.905
That feels like that's a decision that would be from the heart.
00:49:38.114 --> 00:49:46.934
And so there's so many ways at which you can be a leader and not only be an entrepreneur that you can build a successful business.
00:49:47.175 --> 00:50:08.045
But I think the other component that you're saying is that you should be a leader who operates with love and by doing so, you're going to, gather up, you're going to collect benefits over time of other people respecting you, other people, being vulnerable with you, you connecting with others, because it's not just enough to be successful to make money, to have others, come to you.
00:50:08.074 --> 00:50:22.425
Because I've interviewed, I've spoken, I've met many super successful entrepreneurs, and the one thing everybody shares is you can tell 'em that you're their biggest fan and they feel nothing because it doesn't mean anything to them.
00:50:22.635 --> 00:50:32.295
And the thing that means something to them is having an impact on others, knowing that either the content or the business is helping others and seeing that emotional connection.
00:50:32.565 --> 00:50:34.215
But it's all about giving back.
00:50:34.545 --> 00:50:40.916
And it's not, it's no longer about how much money can you make and how much validation can you get because you've reached the top.
00:50:41.576 --> 00:50:42.025
Yeah.
00:50:42.085 --> 00:50:42.266
Yeah.
00:50:42.266 --> 00:50:55.322
There's so much good in there that you said, and one of the things I wanna build on is, this idea that outside of the business, whatever, however your life is, you've mentioned a spouse, so I just want to use that as an example.
00:50:55.690 --> 00:51:05.175
You're building your business and you, let's say you have a spouse and you're distracted with that, with your business'cause you don't know how to turn it off.
00:51:05.356 --> 00:51:08.536
And so how does that play into your relationship long term?
00:51:08.536 --> 00:51:14.204
If you have a spouse, you've gone into this relationship for the long term, you know, for your life.
00:51:14.204 --> 00:51:15.824
Really, that's the idea around it.
00:51:16.155 --> 00:51:18.807
And so what's more important to you?
00:51:18.927 --> 00:51:24.447
is it being fully present with your work or is it being fully present with your spouse?
00:51:25.081 --> 00:51:26.550
these are tough decisions.
00:51:26.581 --> 00:51:29.760
You have to think about these from a place of your heart.
00:51:30.385 --> 00:51:33.641
Because you wanna be successful in your business.
00:51:33.641 --> 00:51:41.141
You wanna grow it, you wanna make an impact, you wanna make money, all the things, but you wanna have a successful marriage as well.
00:51:41.260 --> 00:51:52.201
And then when your wife is picking up on the fact that you're not listening to her at the dinner table after she told you minute story of something that happened and then she says, what do you think?
00:51:52.201 --> 00:51:54.570
And you don't even know how to answer'cause you weren't even listening.
00:51:54.570 --> 00:51:58.864
'cause you were thinking about, all the things that are going on at work, at your business.
00:51:59.300 --> 00:52:02.056
that's not gonna make for a good long-term situation.
00:52:02.326 --> 00:52:11.335
Let's say you have kids, your kids know when you're not present with them, you could be throwing the ball around with them goofing around with them, but they know what's up there.
00:52:11.726 --> 00:52:14.126
they pick up on that energy I was talking about earlier.
00:52:14.126 --> 00:52:15.806
Kids are great at pick up on energy.
00:52:15.806 --> 00:52:19.615
They know when something's off and that creates an imprint in them.
00:52:20.052 --> 00:52:21.413
And so when they're older.
00:52:22.380 --> 00:52:30.750
. They have issues and sometimes they have no idea where it came from, but where it came from was the fact that you weren't present with them and that's all they cared about.
00:52:30.750 --> 00:52:37.469
They could give to anything about your company and your employees and your money and all that.
00:52:37.469 --> 00:52:38.730
They don't care about that.
00:52:39.000 --> 00:52:39.900
That is nothing.
00:52:39.900 --> 00:52:42.900
Your kids don't care for one second about any of that stuff.
00:52:43.603 --> 00:52:45.313
All they care about is your attention.
00:52:46.123 --> 00:52:47.233
That's all they want from you.
00:52:47.592 --> 00:52:53.623
Unconditional love, and isn't it funny that that's all we really want from anybody?
00:52:54.163 --> 00:52:55.873
Isn't that all we want?
00:52:56.159 --> 00:52:59.579
Don't we just want unconditional love from anybody else in our life?
00:53:00.230 --> 00:53:01.489
That's all we want from them.
00:53:02.045 --> 00:53:03.096
That's all that matters.
00:53:03.456 --> 00:53:06.846
You could still build a great business, by the way, and make money.
00:53:07.326 --> 00:53:08.615
You don't have to even give your money.
00:53:08.646 --> 00:53:11.795
I mean, I love your example, by the way, of taking less salary and all that.
00:53:11.795 --> 00:53:14.436
Go for it, but you don't have to do that.
00:53:15.197 --> 00:53:17.148
You could still build a great business.
00:53:17.268 --> 00:53:30.195
You just have to have a strong foundation in your life, a strong framework that where you're really clear about who you are, why you're doing what you're doing, and you create strong boundaries and you don't let the boundaries get blurred.
00:53:30.885 --> 00:53:52.344
That's one of the things we teach you, those 10 disciplines, is how to create that, that framework, so you can still go hard still with that drive, still satisfy all that is in you to build this empire, but be able to do it with peace because you're just so clear about why you're doing what you're doing.
00:53:52.818 --> 00:54:00.251
You're clear about who you are and you're clear about your boundaries and that gives you the time, your greatest asset.
00:54:00.280 --> 00:54:03.065
It gives you time it calms your mind.
00:54:03.065 --> 00:54:06.605
It gives you space in your mind so you can.
00:54:06.889 --> 00:54:08.539
Come from a place of love.
00:54:09.230 --> 00:54:10.396
that's powerful.
00:54:10.652 --> 00:54:31.335
it reminded me of this thought exercise that, that I love to, to think about and bring up is if you ask your kids or your partner, Hey, I can either, I can spend all day with you, but I'm gonna be partially on my phone, or I can spend one hour with you and give you my full attention, which one would you prefer?
00:54:31.481 --> 00:54:31.771
Yeah.
00:54:31.791 --> 00:54:32.771
That's so good.
00:54:32.938 --> 00:54:35.398
don't even have to think about what they're going to prefer.
00:54:35.398 --> 00:54:41.405
It's, that one hour and that, reflects this idea of being present with others.
00:54:41.795 --> 00:55:01.454
And then also what your message is partly here is also being present with yourself to know what are you feeling And that there's so much in how you can, having the awareness to know what you're feeling can have a much greater impact, from the people, your employees, the people around you.
00:55:01.695 --> 00:55:09.445
Especially as an entrepreneur, I think, the effect in entrepreneur can have on society is much greater than any one individual.
00:55:09.565 --> 00:55:14.657
So it's more important for us to be attuned with our emotions, how we're feeling.
00:55:14.927 --> 00:55:18.588
And then, as you say, to operate from a place of love and not fear.
00:55:18.976 --> 00:55:27.905
That is so good because that blessing that we have is we can build empires, and that has a great impact on our employees.
00:55:28.326 --> 00:55:31.896
It has a great impact on our clients, our stakeholders.
00:55:32.675 --> 00:55:37.126
The communities where we're in, where our businesses are in it all impacts it.
00:55:37.643 --> 00:55:58.414
and so when you're coming as an entrepreneur, when you realize that and you can start to identify on a daily basis how you are feeling, the thoughts that you're having, what's going on in there inside you, and you can work to release that and come from a place of love.
00:55:59.014 --> 00:56:09.447
And again, that's just a word I'm using there, you could use other words, but come from that place of love, people will pick up on that energy and that makes a big difference in their lives.
00:56:09.717 --> 00:56:22.617
You know, there's a moment, there's, there's a great saying by Viktor Frankl who wrote a great book called Man's Search for Meaning, and he says there's this moment between stimulus and response, and in that moment you get to choose happiness.
00:56:23.248 --> 00:56:24.447
It's a millisecond.
00:56:24.625 --> 00:56:28.675
And so sometimes we react in our lives, especially at business.
00:56:28.675 --> 00:56:32.717
we get really worked up about stuff, but we don't need to do that.
00:56:32.838 --> 00:56:35.148
It's just business is messy.
00:56:35.237 --> 00:56:35.987
Things happen.
00:56:36.197 --> 00:56:37.818
We don't need to get worked up about it.
00:56:37.907 --> 00:56:39.498
If you're smart, you're gonna figure it out.
00:56:39.527 --> 00:56:40.157
You always do.
00:56:40.208 --> 00:56:41.222
nothing to worry about.
00:56:41.913 --> 00:56:49.639
So you can pause in that moment between stimulus and response, and you can choose how you react to that situation.
00:56:49.849 --> 00:56:52.579
And your team members, your employees pick up on that.
00:56:53.539 --> 00:57:00.813
And when they see how calm you are in the eye of the hurricane, how do they react to that?
00:57:00.873 --> 00:57:01.862
They're gonna be calm.
00:57:02.393 --> 00:57:11.943
that makes a big difference when they go home because now they're not spinning and they can be present with their families and then they can come back and be better.
00:57:12.451 --> 00:57:19.768
A better team member at the company because they wanna do good work, but they just don't want, they don't wanna feel anxious anymore than you do.
00:57:20.164 --> 00:57:25.625
And so it's a big cycle about how we can make a difference as entrepreneurs.
00:57:26.045 --> 00:57:27.335
But we have to be very aware.
00:57:27.335 --> 00:57:30.215
And as I mentioned at the outset, we have to manage this.
00:57:30.905 --> 00:57:32.525
It's our responsibility.
00:57:33.034 --> 00:57:35.434
It is you've been given this gift.
00:57:36.244 --> 00:57:37.385
Take it seriously.
00:57:38.224 --> 00:57:40.985
You'll make your money, I promise you will make your money.
00:57:41.715 --> 00:57:43.005
you'll build your empire.
00:57:43.034 --> 00:57:45.014
you'll get everything you looking for.
00:57:45.474 --> 00:57:46.849
but do it with inner peace.
00:57:46.909 --> 00:57:54.485
'cause people will pick up on that and you'll make a great impact on them and the society that you're part of the world, you'll make a great impact.
00:57:55.369 --> 00:58:04.916
Yeah, I, I love your message and that it's possible to have your cake and eat, too, to be successful on the outside, but to also be successful on the inside.
00:58:05.396 --> 00:58:12.106
And that's a divide that I think is becoming greater and greater with technology, with society.
00:58:12.436 --> 00:58:21.556
And it's becoming more and more difficult to have that connection, not only that, that connection with what your ego wants, but also with what your soul needs.
00:58:22.166 --> 00:58:29.043
and so before we, end our conversation, I would love for you to go through you, you mentioned these disciplines a few times.
00:58:29.043 --> 00:58:33.788
I would love for you to just give the big picture view of what these disciplines are.
00:58:34.733 --> 00:58:43.762

and Inner peace.
00:58:46.000 --> 00:58:48.489
I'm gonna say them fast, okay.
00:58:48.610 --> 00:58:50.260
And then I'll explain at the end.
00:58:50.719 --> 00:58:53.539
big picture, 10 year thinking.
00:58:54.170 --> 00:58:58.070
Shift your mindset from short term thinking to thinking in 10 year timeframes.
00:58:58.550 --> 00:58:59.480
Take time off.
00:58:59.869 --> 00:59:05.539
Take 130 days off per year and don't think about work the entire time.
00:59:06.530 --> 00:59:12.469
Know thyself be you 100% of the time, 247 365.
00:59:13.250 --> 00:59:18.710
Be still sit in silence for at least 30 minutes every single day.

Say no, often say no to everything that doesn't fit in those first five disciplines.
00:59:37.050 --> 00:59:40.951
Don't do $25 an hour work or work below your pay grade.
00:59:41.485 --> 00:59:47.878
Never do anything that you could pay somebody that Prepare every night before your head hits the pillow.
00:59:47.878 --> 00:59:49.047
Every single night.
00:59:49.137 --> 00:59:50.637
Document the next day's plan.
00:59:51.628 --> 00:59:53.967
Put everything in one place.
00:59:54.538 --> 01:00:03.418
Pick one place that you're gonna capture every idea, commitment, thought, action, item, and promise as you make your way through your day.
01:00:03.748 --> 01:00:05.697
And finally, be humble.
01:00:06.208 --> 01:00:10.677
View yourself as an equal to every single person on this planet.
01:00:11.608 --> 01:00:21.481
And when you incorporate all 10 of those together, they have the ability to help you understand yourself better and protect you, and they protect you.
01:00:21.481 --> 01:00:27.481
In that you get really clear about those boundaries that I mentioned earlier, and you don't let the boundaries get blurred.
01:00:27.541 --> 01:00:29.641
And when you don't let the boundaries get blurred.
01:00:30.451 --> 01:00:31.710
You make greater impact.
01:00:31.710 --> 01:00:36.751
You're doing the things that matter most, and you can do it with inner peace.
01:00:37.740 --> 01:00:42.862
And so this, this is an important framework to have in our life as we build our empires.
01:00:43.940 --> 01:00:50.786
uh, I, I love that as there's, there's so many principles for how you should live and operate in life.
01:00:51.175 --> 01:00:57.471
Yet there's far few principles for how to operate from the heart as an entrepreneur.
01:00:57.920 --> 01:01:08.644
And love that these cover the gantlet from how you should work to not working too much, to how to prepare, how to make sure that you're not doing too much for others.
01:01:08.650 --> 01:01:10.750
that you're spending enough time with yourself.
01:01:11.000 --> 01:01:18.681
I really love these, and in fact, I think I'm gonna print them out and I'm going to put them next to my gratitude journal and probably reflect on them.
01:01:18.686 --> 01:01:20.690
I think that's an important component.
01:01:20.690 --> 01:01:24.771
You know, it's not just reading something about, but it's also reflecting upon it.
01:01:24.936 --> 01:01:25.476
You got it.
01:01:25.505 --> 01:01:26.016
You got it.
01:01:26.016 --> 01:01:28.175
