ABOUT THIS EPISODE
Most companies chase the shiny object—think Battle Royale—that's what they believe will ignite the next big thing. But Gavin and Dylan spill the truth: copying Fortnite isn’t innovation; it’s copycat chaos. If you want to survive the wild world of live service games, you need more than a hoverboard; you need a hook that keeps players returning—and we've got the scoop on the hits, the flops, and the lessons learned. In this episode, we dive into the science of successful live service titles like Fortnite, Roblox, and Marvel Rivalries—and what makes them stick. You'll discover how endless updates, crossovers, and hype-machines like skins and seasons create loyalty (and chaos in the marketplace). Plus, we break down why some games like High Guard, Concord, and Suicide Squad flopped harder than a poorly executed stunt. We also dissect the rise of cosmetic-driven games, the gambling mechanics that keep players hooked (and sometimes hooked on regret), and how the social experience fuels engagement without breaking the bank—or the game. Gavin shares insider tips on how the best titles keep content fresh, maintain stellar servers, and turn players into lifelong fans.Neglect these lessons, and you'll be stuck with a game that’s dead on arrival, or worse—burnt-out players who see right through your hype. But get it right, and you’ve got a goldmine of recurring revenue, passionate communities, and endless updates that keep your game relevant, profitable, and, dare we say, legendary.Whether you're a hardcore gamer, a game dev, or just someone curious about why everyone’s obsessed with live service titles, this episode will change the way you see digital worlds—beyond just pressing ‘play.’ Ready to make your own hit? Hit play and learn how to craft the next big thing—without falling into the same trap of copy-paste.
