ABOUT THIS EPISODE
Does Google prevent blogs from being seen if AI helped write them?
Most of what already ranks on Google today is partly AI generated, so AI use on its own isn't the issue.
The bigger shift is that Google is getting stricter about what even enters its index, not just what ranks well, and that filtering appears tied to how identifiable a piece of content is as fully AI generated with no human specificity added.
- AI content watermarking and what it means for text and images
- Updated terms of service language shielding platforms from AI liability
- Stricter Google indexing standards for AI generated pages
- Adding personalization and specific detail to stay identifiable
Specific, first-person detail is what keeps a blog post inside Google's index instead of outside it.

00:00:33.929 --> 00:00:36.730
Do you know what Google was called before it was called Google?
00:00:36.730 --> 00:00:45.770
Oh, I I did once and now Yeah, because I've probably mentioned it in a previous episode, but it's not something I would expect you or anyone to remember.
00:00:45.770 --> 00:00:47.450
It was called Backrub.
00:00:47.450 --> 00:00:48.010
What?
00:00:48.010 --> 00:00:48.810
Yeah, backrub.
00:00:49.049 --> 00:00:49.850
No, I don't remember that.
00:00:50.170 --> 00:00:52.570
Backrub was the name of Google before it was called.
00:00:53.210 --> 00:00:54.090
Get out.
00:00:54.409 --> 00:00:55.370
Yeah, pretty terrible, huh?
00:00:55.609 --> 00:00:57.770
Back like that's one of the worst.
00:00:58.490 --> 00:00:58.969
Yeah.
00:00:58.969 --> 00:01:02.730
Because it was all built on backlinks.
00:01:02.730 --> 00:01:09.450
So we've talked about how important links are to SEO and to Google, and how another word for links is backlinks.
00:01:09.450 --> 00:01:11.930
The way websites link to each other is called backlinks.
00:01:11.930 --> 00:01:14.569
I don't know.
00:01:14.810 --> 00:01:16.009
That's just gross.
00:01:16.409 --> 00:01:19.849
But that is what the two guys who founded Google called it.
00:01:19.849 --> 00:01:26.890
And it was only when they got a CEO that the CEO was like, okay, priority number one, we gotta change the name.
00:01:27.129 --> 00:01:27.530
Yeah.
00:01:27.689 --> 00:01:29.050
And then that became Google.
00:01:29.450 --> 00:01:33.210
I don't think Google would be Google if it was called Backrub.
00:01:33.450 --> 00:01:37.050
Can you imagine if they had kept that instead of saying, oh, you can Google it?
00:01:37.050 --> 00:01:38.729
We could say, oh, just back rub it.
00:01:38.890 --> 00:01:40.009
Oh God, no.
00:01:40.009 --> 00:01:41.129
No, no.
00:01:41.129 --> 00:01:42.409
No, I cannot.
00:01:42.409 --> 00:01:43.689
And I do not wish to.
00:01:43.930 --> 00:01:44.250
Yeah.
00:01:44.250 --> 00:01:44.969
Right.
00:01:45.210 --> 00:01:45.610
Wow.
00:01:45.930 --> 00:01:50.250
Have you been getting those emails about updated terms and service recently?
00:01:50.810 --> 00:01:52.009
Every day.
00:01:52.330 --> 00:01:54.169
I have been getting a whole bunch of them recently.
00:01:54.490 --> 00:01:56.810
And updated terms too, right?
00:01:57.129 --> 00:01:57.449
Yeah.
00:01:57.449 --> 00:02:01.449
And like I got three of them yesterday from pretty pretty big companies.
00:02:01.449 --> 00:02:05.530
And I looked at the, I just read them, and to me, they're all saying exactly the same thing.
00:02:05.930 --> 00:02:06.810
I haven't even read them.
00:02:06.810 --> 00:02:07.530
What are they doing?
00:02:11.770 --> 00:02:16.890
They're saying you could you can't sue us because of AI generated content on our platforms.
00:02:16.890 --> 00:02:19.449
That's what I that's what I think is behind all this.
00:02:19.449 --> 00:02:24.009
You know, they put a whole bunch of flowery legal language around it.
00:02:24.009 --> 00:02:28.330
So it's kind of who knows, but I think that's what's happening.
00:02:28.729 --> 00:02:36.330
Yeah, people are are starting to plant seeds of protection, and we don't have anything to do with this, and our hands are clean.
00:02:36.650 --> 00:02:36.969
Yeah.
00:02:36.969 --> 00:02:50.969
And and uh the one another reason why I think this is because also there's been a lot of news from the social media platforms that they are gonna have to tag AI generated profiles.
00:02:51.769 --> 00:02:52.729
Oh, they're gonna tag them.
00:02:53.049 --> 00:02:53.370
Profiles.
00:02:53.370 --> 00:03:00.810
So there are entire profiles that are just an AI generated character, person, an entity.
00:03:00.810 --> 00:03:05.289
And so they they need to be designated as such.
00:03:05.289 --> 00:03:06.569
Okay, that's new.
00:03:06.569 --> 00:03:14.169
Also, I think what you were saying is they also now are going to be watermarking images generated by AI.
00:03:14.169 --> 00:03:21.370
So the actual tools that generate these things are not the social media platforms, but also also the text.
00:03:21.530 --> 00:03:21.689
Yeah.
00:03:21.930 --> 00:03:24.329
They are what they call watermarking the text.
00:03:24.489 --> 00:03:25.129
Yeah.
00:03:25.449 --> 00:03:34.569
So that when it when text is generated by AI, there is a fingerprint in there that human that we could never detect, but that other AIs students.
00:03:34.569 --> 00:03:35.370
Yeah.
00:03:35.370 --> 00:03:37.849
Now, Google has already done this.
00:03:37.849 --> 00:03:39.210
They've already implemented.
00:03:39.449 --> 00:03:40.810
Um Claude did it.
00:03:41.129 --> 00:03:44.889
Anthropic has announced this, and it's not completely live yet.
00:03:44.889 --> 00:03:50.889
And OpenAI has initially said, Yeah, we're gonna do it too, and then they very quietly said no, we're not.
00:03:50.889 --> 00:03:51.769
Oh motherfuckers.
00:03:51.769 --> 00:03:53.449
Which is what they always seem to do.
00:03:53.769 --> 00:03:54.090
Right?
00:03:54.090 --> 00:03:55.210
Slimes.
00:03:55.609 --> 00:03:55.930
Yeah.
00:03:55.930 --> 00:03:58.409
But anyway, I was thinking about this.
00:03:58.729 --> 00:03:59.129
Yes.
00:03:59.289 --> 00:04:05.370
And I was thinking, well, it's going to be now even more important when you are creating blogs and you're having AI help you create blogs.
00:04:05.370 --> 00:04:05.689
Yeah.
00:04:05.689 --> 00:04:14.889
If you just give AI a simple prompt and have it create a blog for you, that's going to be very identifiable as AI generated content in the not too distant future.
00:04:15.289 --> 00:04:16.410
I was just saying this.
00:04:16.970 --> 00:04:19.370
And that's not necessarily bad.
00:04:19.370 --> 00:04:19.610
Right.
00:04:19.610 --> 00:04:31.210
Like most of what is ranking on Google is, I would say, partially, probably more than 50-50 AI generated, but not completely AI generated.
00:04:31.449 --> 00:04:31.850
Uh-huh.
00:04:31.850 --> 00:04:43.449
Do you think people can just easily like copy what they have from Claude, put it in notes, rewrite it, retype it out, and then they're like, ah, see, suckers.
00:04:43.850 --> 00:04:46.889
Yeah, but we don't know what I mean, first that could be a lot of work.
00:04:46.889 --> 00:04:49.129
And then we don't know what the fingerprint is.
00:04:49.129 --> 00:04:54.410
Like, there's a very good chance you could do all that, and then the the fingerprint is still there.
00:04:54.730 --> 00:04:55.530
Yeah, true.
00:04:55.930 --> 00:05:11.050
And then also separately, I have also been noticing it's this firsthand experience of watching what pages get indexed on Google from people's websites, they are becoming more and more strict about what even gets into the index.
00:05:11.290 --> 00:05:11.450
Wow.
00:05:11.930 --> 00:05:15.930
Now I don't even I don't mean like what ranks well and what does not rank well.
00:05:15.930 --> 00:05:19.290
I mean what is even included in Google.
00:05:19.290 --> 00:05:22.650
A lot a lot of things are not being included.
00:05:22.650 --> 00:05:24.570
And this did not used to be the case.
00:05:24.570 --> 00:05:24.810
No.
00:05:24.810 --> 00:05:32.170
Now I have I have to think this is all kind of a result of the same thing and the explosion of AI generated content.
00:05:32.410 --> 00:05:32.650
Yeah.
00:05:32.890 --> 00:05:35.290
To me, that's my read on the situation.
00:05:35.290 --> 00:05:45.850
And what I th I think this is important again for small business owners, if you have a blog, you got to do more work on your own, at least in planning your content.
00:05:46.010 --> 00:05:46.250
Right.
00:05:46.410 --> 00:05:46.650
Okay.
00:05:46.650 --> 00:05:52.010
Be very specific in, you know, like I like I said, we don't know what the fingerprint is.
00:05:52.170 --> 00:05:52.490
No.
00:05:52.810 --> 00:05:56.970
So I don't I can't I can't really tell you how to avoid it or whatever.
00:05:56.970 --> 00:05:57.129
Right.
00:05:57.129 --> 00:06:01.290
But make sure make sure you're not just having AI content generated for you.
00:06:01.290 --> 00:06:06.170
Because there's a there's an increasingly good chance it will never even get into Google.
00:06:06.650 --> 00:06:12.170
Yeah, I think that alone is a good first step.
00:06:12.570 --> 00:06:12.810
Yeah.
00:06:12.810 --> 00:06:15.610
And this is still like Early Days.
00:06:15.610 --> 00:06:17.610
This is like hot off the press type.
00:06:17.610 --> 00:06:21.850
Like this story, I essentially I would say is essentially still developing.
00:06:21.850 --> 00:06:29.689
Like I don't really know where it's going, and so I I can't give you a whole lot of specifics into what to do and how to use this information, but just be aware of it.
00:06:30.090 --> 00:06:38.090
I think everything that you've been saying all along has been stay authentic to you, write for clients, not Google.
00:06:38.490 --> 00:06:41.689
Yeah, know your audience right from your own perspective.
00:06:41.689 --> 00:06:43.530
That's that's like the big takeaway.
00:06:43.530 --> 00:06:46.810
Right from your perspective, what experience can you add?
00:06:46.810 --> 00:06:48.170
What information?
00:06:48.170 --> 00:07:00.330
Anytime you can add to your content facts and figures, names, dates, uh specifics, that's going to be really good because AI doesn't, or at least it's not supposed to generate that sort of stuff on its own.
00:07:00.330 --> 00:07:05.450
But just the more concrete factual stuff you can include, the better.
00:07:06.170 --> 00:07:06.730
Good to know.
00:07:06.730 --> 00:07:07.210
Thank you.
00:07:07.530 --> 00:07:10.890
And start all your videos by saying, hi, I'm a human.
