ABOUT THIS EPISODE
Martini Window continues Season 2 with an incredible guest. This week, Kevin is joined by guest co-host Giovanna Morales Vargas as they sit down with acclaimed filmmaker Julie Cohen, director of RBG, Julia, My Name is Pauli Murray, Everybody, and producer of Frida. Together, they take a deep dive into Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds.
The conversation explores the film’s bold opening sequence, its long-form storytelling, and the way Tarantino plays with tension, genre, and audience complicity. Julie shares her thoughts on why the movie is brilliant, why it can also be uncomfortable, and how it forces the viewer to reckon with violence, revenge, and the ethics of rooting for brutality. Giovanna brings her own perspective on Shoshanna as a character taking control of her narrative, the film’s use of cinema as a weapon, and why this remains one of Tarantino’s most daring works.
The three discuss performance choices, the film’s structure, standout scenes like the basement tavern sequence, and how Inglourious Basterds continues to resonate in a time when global politics are echoing some of the themes the movie takes aim at. Julie also speaks about her own current projects, including her work on stories of resistance during the Nazi era.
