00:00:03
Speaker 1: We got them.
00:00:05
Speaker 2: My guest right now is a Pittsburgh guy and eliminated the Flyers in eight, scoring two goals in the decisive game, a six to zero win at the Old Melon Arena. He should get a statue for that. He is Ryan Malone. You see him on sports at Pittsburgh Bugsy. Can the Penguins pull it off? How much has the momentum switched Pittsburgh's way?
00:00:25
Speaker 3: I think, you know, it's those controllables. I think those first few games that depend just kind of got sucked into a game that they that hasn't brought them success before. You know, they're not the most overly physical team, but you know, they play smart, the hard to play against, and that's where I think they got into trouble these last few games. It looks kind of like the Pens that we're used to seeing in that regular season that brought them success. So I think they can kind of stay out of the rope of dope stuff and you know, take advantage of maybe the special teams again. I think their power play can hopefully of her even even better. You know, I think they're definitely in it. I believe they can. I definitely know. I think we all know, we don't bet against sid.
00:01:09
Speaker 2: I agree with all that, especially the last part. And I think this is kind of like hockey one O one. But the pengu was having trailed in the past two games, and for the Flyers to make things chaotic.
00:01:21
Speaker 1: That's tougher to do when you're behind or it's tied, isn't it It is.
00:01:25
Speaker 3: I mean, if you go in as a group in mindsets. I remember in the Lightning we were playing Boston, I think like twenty eleven Eastern Conference Finals, and we knew Boston, right was big, physical, tough, bully people around. We knew that is what they needed. And our coach told us no one's allowed to fight or talk, no worries, exchange anything after a whistle, nothing, So we went like dead silent, turned their cheek every time, so that that kind of took that extra We thought it was a benefiting you know them, you know, we didn't think we could out bully them. So it's kind of like that mental game. All right, Well, we're just saying whistle the whistle, turn away, take the punch, whatever, Like you don't have to entertain that if you choose not to. And I think that's as of now the Penguin's kind of switched that up a little bit.
00:02:12
Speaker 1: It looks like I agree, let me play Devil's advocate, though.
00:02:15
Speaker 2: I think the PEngs have done just enough, whether it respond or even initiate after the whistle, just enough like Mantha's punch last night, Gino flipping the pucket of their bench. I don't want that to happen a lot, but a little bit. I think it keeps them on their toes.
00:02:31
Speaker 3: What say you, Yeah, I agree too. And that's where those I think those veterans that have kind of been there before, right to the right time and moment to do these little things that just you know, send a little spark whatever it may be, annoying things and if you see them get a reaction, usually want to do, you know, more of it, you know. So I think that's where you know, those guys know the game and the game and kind of when to turn up the temperature and you know when they kind of keep it down. So I think, you know, we're all that experience, they know what it definitely takes to win, and uh, you know, it's just one game at a time. You go into Philly, take care of business, and they never know, how did the.
00:03:09
Speaker 2: Goal we switch help the Penguins because I thought Skinner played okay, Bugsy, I don't. I don't think he played bad per se, do you.
00:03:16
Speaker 3: No, I mean he actually, I mean you look back and he has somehlight real saves to keep them in those games where again where they had those kind of structure breakdowns. And I think too, after you see that team a few games and understand where they're kind of generating their off front offense from, you know, if his turnover at the blue and things you can control. You know, now these guys have made I think those changes and I think you know, uh, Skinner did what he had to do, but when you're down three to zero, you know you got to try the other guy. And she Loft does have that record of having big performances in big games throughout his career, So you know, I think both guys can do the job that right now is she left in there and you definitely ride them.
00:03:57
Speaker 4: To the end.
00:03:58
Speaker 2: We gotta u talk about sidmore. You touched in a moment ago and I don't think you can talk about him enough. How great has he been these last two games, not just on the score sheet, but he's winning every puck battle, Like I'm fun to saying, he really drags his guys into the fight, doesn't he.
00:04:15
Speaker 3: Yes, I mean how yes, we're all season long. I mean even from the press box, you feel like he can go do more if the team is listening, because you always see him leading, if it's physically to finish a check at the end of the game, to set the tone for the next one, and whatever may be, he's willing to do it. He's done that for you know, two decades now, and you know, if that doesn't get you fired up, you're definitely playing.
00:04:38
Speaker 4: The wrong sports.
00:04:39
Speaker 3: So I think when he leads by example and does it, everyone else doesn't really have a choice but to follow, and that always raises other people too to their best levels, out of their comfort zone. And you know, he gets the best of everyone around him. But he believes right it's all four lines. Everybody whoever's in that lineup can do their job to partake in the comeback, and it starts with one on one battle. So if you know, going into the corner, Okay, this is my job, get this puck, and you you know, taked on just that responsibility alone. As individuals, you know, collectively working together. You know, that's a that's a great hockey team right there. So you know, you can't say enough great things about Sid and he's definitely leading by example here this comeback hopefully for the Pennance.
00:05:25
Speaker 2: We're talking to Ryan Malone here on the X. Why is Sid better back now with Rustin Raquel? And don't get me wrong, Bugsy, I didn't hate him with Chinakov, but I think for this series he's more effective where he's back at.
00:05:39
Speaker 3: Yeah, I think it's just maybe comfort level. I think we all sat with Chinakov's shot and capability, he just hasn't seemed to generate that those offensive chances as much, you know with Sid. So you know you kind of spread that depth again now throughout the lineup, and that's where I think the Penguins is why they have successes because they had that the Sid line doing Sid line things, but then they had this backup support as well and everyone else now chipping in, So it kind of I think, always balance out the lineup a little better through that depth through every line. Now you have to kind of be aware of.
00:06:13
Speaker 2: Pants you're basically using five D these last two games. Bugsy solidly off I think he plays okay, but he doesn't play much. Can that group handle that workload? And it especially falls on Tanger and Carlson?
00:06:27
Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean you right, those guys they're very smart, skilled hockey players, and you know, I think they you know, you have to go with what's worked in as well, and those guys can both can play you know, probably thirty minutes.
00:06:42
Speaker 4: I think you can see some of them.
00:06:44
Speaker 3: You know, Tanger especially like picking these spots more a little better to be physical and you know, waste that extra energy on finishing checks and that. But those guys can manage those minutes no problem. Sometimes. You know, when they're kind of playing that much, you actually end up playing better because you're just going over and playing every other shift. You're kind of getting this nice little flow state. So you know, it could help, you know, everyone in that regard.
00:07:09
Speaker 2: Well, what encourages me most about the d is the Tangers found the second win these last couple of games and scored a goal in each game as well. He's always been such a catalyst when he's right and he looks right.
00:07:21
Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean again, I think Troy, you get a few bounces confidence everyone, But I think the biggest thing for Tana. I think tang are coming into this year as well, just accepting, Okay, hey, you're not going to be the guy. We're gonna give Carlson this PP one and kind of you know, manage that. And I think again, you look at you know, said, you know all these guys like what can I do for the team? Team first mentality. So but when he goes over the boards, you notice on every shift he's a big factor of why they won all these championships while they're allver there. So I think these big games again, these guys obviously come to the spotlight. I mean these big moments for a reason.
00:07:59
Speaker 2: That pinball goal he got last night, the game winner, is that one of the weirdest goals you've seen. I've seen a few like that, but maybe not in that situation.
00:08:07
Speaker 3: Yeah, to go back the other angle in which it came, you don't see like the reverse backers mate like bounce out straight or something. But yeah, it was definitely unfortunate bounce. The hockey gods were smiling down on the penguinself. Hopefully they can do that few more games there.
00:08:24
Speaker 2: It would be good if a few more guys got going. The guys I've talked about today are China, Kauf, Manta, Kindle, and Gino. Gino had a couple of goals early in the series, and I'm not criticizing any I just would like to see them on the score sheet. Do any of those guys seem ready to ignite to you?
00:08:41
Speaker 3: Yeah, Manta for sure, and you got a great season. I think Kindle again, first, you know taste, it's such a different game in your yard, just kind of almost speed just steps up a level because that those back checkers and back pressure guys are coming back. You know, there's no kind of like oh maybe I'll just take a little a few strides here. You know, everyone to die hard to get back on defense and there's not that much room. And as a young kid, you're probably thinking, oh, actually, like change my game, Getney Scrumbs, maybe do all this other stuff. And again, it's just probably not his game, but I think he's definitely. I think last game he definitely felt like it was moving the puck up the ice well with speed and gaining some confidence. And he obviously seems like a quick, quick learner and be able to adapt to this playoff style.
00:09:29
Speaker 4: And it'd be great to get that.
00:09:31
Speaker 3: You know, kindle mantelion going here, so I mean I see him coming on the score sheeet in this game or the next one, senial later of those should be on there a few times.
00:09:40
Speaker 1: Now.
00:09:40
Speaker 2: You hate the Flyers. You never made bones about it. You're from Pittsburgh, your dad played against them. When you became a free agent, your agent got one piece of instruction, which is no Flyers.
00:09:50
Speaker 1: So let's let's revisit.
00:09:52
Speaker 2: How great was it in eight when you scored those two goals I mentioned to eliminate them at the Iglin the Eastern Conference final. Buzz ye, I'm not kidding you. Remember it's one of my career highlights. I remember that like it was a cup.
00:10:04
Speaker 5: Yeah.
00:10:04
Speaker 3: I mean for me too. I mean that was my kind of probably biggest moment, helping the team get to the Stanley Cup final. I think just you always had the flashbacks of the kids, my brother and I in the stands, you know, being fans, So there was like a whole now want the ice helping the team go to the Stanley Cup final.
00:10:22
Speaker 4: I thought that was just amazing.
00:10:24
Speaker 3: And obviously it's just as nice when the Flyers they were the Flyers were the victims. So for myself, it was, you know, a privilege to wear the colors and definitely support the team and trying to accomplish the ultimate goal.
00:10:37
Speaker 1: What's that like in Philly's room right now, because that's a young team.
00:10:41
Speaker 2: If you were in that room as a veteran, how would you try to get that team to regroup?
00:10:46
Speaker 3: I think to them and probably talk saying, hey, would we take a three to two series of lead against the Penguins before we started? I would think say yes. So they're like, all right, let's go out one this next one and really that easy. You can't really dwell in anything that happened in the past. You just got to take care of this next game. So you heard talk talk a little bit about some of their guys just kind of not hitting the net or their shots were getting blocked. So they need to be a little more deceptive in certain areas, so they'll make their you know, adjustments and then come out a little different. But I think that mindset is like, Okay, we're up three to two against the Penguins. What we would take that We're going to our barn. You know it's going to be a great crowd, and you just try to get the job done there at home.
00:11:32
Speaker 2: Would you have a game like that at home that that's so important? I think the first ten minutes being at home helps. If you don't lead after that, I think it trickles away. Is that fair to say?
00:11:44
Speaker 3: Yeah, a little bit. I think that initial pressure early on to just you know, score be all over them and then yeah, there's some of those ebbs and flows throughout the game, but I think like a big hit anything can get that fout the crowd back into it, right, and that's what brings more life to the bench and everyone. So you know, it is it is an advantage, I think being at home with that extra energy, So you know, although it's I don't know if that's a decisive answer, but.
00:12:13
Speaker 1: No, no, no, I know just what you mean.
00:12:15
Speaker 2: It's every game is different, but I don't know, I'm trying to find patters.
00:12:19
Speaker 1: In the series that's really offered. Very few of those, am I right?
00:12:24
Speaker 3: Yeah, I think the games are so close. I mean, all the anhel playoffs, it's amazing to watch the inches all around, these overtime winning goals, everything inches all around, the different plays that end up being those winning goals, And that's where you're fighting for every inch to get positioned in front of net where there may be and you know, sometimes the puck keetschen goes in. I mean, that's what playoff hockey's about. So it's definitely exciting here. And the Pens are going to keep us on the edge of our seats for this series, that's for sure.
00:12:54
Speaker 1: Don't you feel like we're do for overtime?
00:12:58
Speaker 3: I would think so. Hopefully maybe the game seven, let's get the boys going in Philly. And I think then too. I think the guys it seems like they're the systems and everything. They're just more decisive with the plays they're making, more certain kind of keeping it black and white to get that flow of all four lines in the game, which is then definitely benefiting I think the Pittsburgh team.
00:13:21
Speaker 2: Bugsy, great stuff, great work on sports Net. We'll talk again soon. My best of big Bugsy.
00:13:26
Speaker 3: All right, sounds good. Yeah, thanks for having me. Joy the day.
00:13:29
Speaker 1: That's Ryan Malone, son of Greg Malone. What does he call me?
00:13:32
Speaker 2: Because Greg was Bugsy back when and and Ryan's bugsy. Oh oh G Bugsy? Yeah, rich O G Bugsy Greg great player for the Penguins too, loved watching him play. My God, I I covered Greg Malone at the start of my career, covered Buggsy his whole career. Buggy has two boys to play. I might I might get to a third generation. Uh A three three four one two WDX. We have Trey Essex at the bottom of the hour talking Steeler draft and the Aaron Rodgers situation one oh five nine.
00:14:07
Speaker 1: One o five nine the x as your shot at Eaggs isn't just a grocery run.
00:14:11
Speaker 4: It's well the super genius Mark Madden.
00:14:15
Speaker 1: No, I just said, I don't know what I said. I don't know what you said.
00:14:18
Speaker 4: Double yeah. The ex at one O five nine.
00:14:27
Speaker 1: A three three four one two w x DX is the number to call.
00:14:32
Speaker 2: At the top of the hour, I'm going to talk about who the Flyer's biggest douchebags are, and it's really tough to decide, but Garnet Hathaway, who's utterly without talent. I've been told by a couple of players, not Penguins, but but.
00:14:45
Speaker 1: Guys not playing anymore.
00:14:48
Speaker 2: You can probably figure out, uh did He will occasionally skate by your bench and do the slap shot then where he just sticks his stick in and Waxhaw helmet a piece of crap.
00:15:03
Speaker 1: Let's go to Nick in the truck. Nick, you're on the Mark Madden Show.
00:15:08
Speaker 6: Hey, Mark, I have a hockey hockey questions, one about the power play and two about the hit Sid took at the end. But I'm going to preface by saying I don't know anything about hockey, but it was a question for you because I'd like to learn a little bit.
00:15:21
Speaker 4: And what do you think.
00:15:22
Speaker 6: At the very start of the third period, Penguins were on a power play. From the tripping call on Malkin, it seemed like the Flyers, being one man down, were dominant on that defensive power play where the Penguins could barely get the puck around and couldn't get anybody open. Was it something that that the Penguins are doing, maybe to hold back just to be careful, or was was it something that the Flyers were able to do and often do that they're so successful.
00:15:49
Speaker 1: Well, I can really simplify it.
00:15:55
Speaker 2: The Flyers know the Penguins are are except the ball to conceding shorthanded chances.
00:16:02
Speaker 1: They've done it all year.
00:16:03
Speaker 2: They conceded twelve shorthanded goals and then another one in this series, they conceded the second most shorthanded goals in the league. So talk has them on the attack when the Penguins are in a power play, and if the Penguins don't get possession quickly in the in the offensive zone and set up the power play, they get rattled because they're aware what the flyers are doing on the attempt to attack.
00:16:27
Speaker 1: So I don't know if that makes any sense.
00:16:29
Speaker 2: It's probably too simple for what seems like it should be a complicated answer, but that's what it is.
00:16:35
Speaker 6: No, it makes I understand completely absolutely. In fact, you know, they were able to hold them to I think maybe one, maybe two clear shots, so it was impressive, to say the least.
00:16:46
Speaker 2: Well, I'll cite another example. Okay, in the nineteen eighty eight eighty nine season. This goes way back, Mario set an NHL record that still stands with thirteen short handed goals, and the Penguins were to take constantly shorthanded with Mario out there, and one of their tactics was if you got a little bit of time on the puck to clear it, like guys like Paul Coffee would take a slap shot at the other team's point man. Shin pads and Mario would read the karum and it didn't always work, but the fact that they attacked on the PK discombobulated the other team's powerplay so much that they just never got to.
00:17:26
Speaker 1: The power play half the time. They were too worried.
00:17:29
Speaker 2: Now, this ain't like that, but you get the general idea.
00:17:33
Speaker 6: Yes, And and if they were down, it would be a lot been a different story. Like if the Penguins were down, I'm sure you know they would have been a lot more forceful with their power play.
00:17:43
Speaker 4: Yeah, I get it.
00:17:44
Speaker 6: Thank you so much with that. And then my other question was on Sid taking that hit at the end of the game. They were pretty adamant about talking during the game that the league is going to take people out if they start going.
00:17:56
Speaker 2: You mean you mean when you mean when Kanetski hit Hid from behind with the cross.
00:18:01
Speaker 6: Yeah, slapped his neck back and then they powed on him. I mean he was on the ground and it looked like he was being powd on.
00:18:07
Speaker 2: I can answer that very simply to the league sucks and in their word, isn't good and they don't care about the stars.
00:18:14
Speaker 1: Thank you for the call.
00:18:16

00:20:34
Speaker 2: Just a great football match, But joining me now A man who played the NFL kind of football won a couple of Super Bowl rings with the Steelers and does a great podcast with our buddy Charlie Batch. It's great to talk with Trey Essex Tray before we get to the Steelers draft and who they got. You heard about this UFA tender stuff with Aaron Rodgers is waiting for him again becoming more troubled than it's worth. What should they do?
00:21:00
Speaker 5: It seems to be for Mia, It just seems unnecessary At some point, the Steelers have to move forward and not hang on to older quarterbacks and quarterbacks in the past and guys that you're just comfortable with, versus trying to see what you.
00:21:17
Speaker 4: Have with the young people.
00:21:19
Speaker 5: The young ones we got on the staff and now that we signed are we drafted Drew Raller. You just gotta wonder, like, what is the thought process behind just holding on to Aaron Rodgers, because this is just gonna hang over their head the entire time.
00:21:33
Speaker 4: Even if some of them do progress in spring training and uh.
00:21:37
Speaker 5: Many camp and whatnot, They're always gonna have that in the back of their head that eat no matter how good they do, a rod can come in and just swoop, swoop the job from under them.
00:21:47
Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that's loldly unspoken, if you know what I mean.
00:21:51
Speaker 1: And it doesn't sound to me.
00:21:53
Speaker 2: Like the Steelers are sure he's coming back, does it? This ufa tender that seems to be a hedge against the possibility of him retiring or going someplace else or whatever. And we've been told all along Tray that it's definitely he's coming back.
00:22:08
Speaker 5: Yeah, I just don't understand the way they're talking and the way they've been talking up until this point.
00:22:13
Speaker 4: It's a foregone conclusion that he's coming.
00:22:16
Speaker 5: And so to do this and not how things be business as usual as they wanted us.
00:22:20
Speaker 4: To think it should be.
00:22:22
Speaker 5: It seems a departure from how they were talking before and the fact that maybe he is thinking about other places maybe or even not coming back at all, but just to try to leverage there to take back some of the leverage just seems odd considering how they were talking before.
00:22:38
Speaker 2: And it makes me wonder if drafting Alburn the third round ties into a suspicion that he's not coming back.
00:22:45
Speaker 4: Maybe.
00:22:45
Speaker 5: So I thought it was a reach not to say that he doesn't have potential and that they weren't thinking about him all along. I just thought maybe we could have got him in the fourth or fifth round, but that's who their quarterback was, and they went after him.
00:22:58
Speaker 4: And that's what.
00:23:00
Speaker 5: H tends to happen in the draft, as if the team really likes a quarterback, they don't mind reaching for them somewhat, and so.
00:23:07
Speaker 4: That seems to be the case in this situation.
00:23:09
Speaker 5: But you got to wonder if that was because of what they plan to do with this tag afterwards.
00:23:14
Speaker 2: Yeah, I see, I'm glad they drafted Alor. I also agree it is a slight reach and a bit of a gamble. But Trey, if you're never gonna have a losing season, you need to buy lottery tickets at quarterback. Unless you go like four wins, five wins, you're not gonna get that nailed on guy.
00:23:31
Speaker 1: Ever, so I can see why they did it.
00:23:34
Speaker 4: Yeah.
00:23:35
Speaker 5: Yeah, odds are you're not gonna find a Pro Bowl quarterback or a All Pro quarterback in the later rounds.
00:23:41
Speaker 4: That's just what history tells is.
00:23:42
Speaker 5: You got to go get them in the earlier parts of the rounds and so uh. But if you're gonna have a chance, you got to go after the guy that you want, and that's who they want. Who was at the top of their board after I'm guessing the first two that were long gone beforehand.
00:23:56
Speaker 1: What do you like and not like about Aler?
00:23:59
Speaker 2: I mean, he looks like he was he's built in a quarterback factory, but he did break his ankle, and I'm not crazy about how he goes through his reads.
00:24:05
Speaker 1: Nobody is.
00:24:07
Speaker 5: It's not the physical traits for me, it's more so just than in tangibles. I tend to think if you have an issue or a hard time winning in college, it's going to be that much harder an NFL, and especially at a program that's designed to win a Blue Chipper or whatever you want to call Penn State. And so them and James Franklin just couldn't get right together together. Ultimately it calls Jane Franklin his job. I'llbeit by the hands of Northwest and Wildcast just to let you know. But the uh, yeah, they just can't get on the same page consistent, consistently enough for him to really develop how I would think you would want somebody who you would want to be the head of your NFL franchise. And so I remember early on they projected him and be the number one overall at least a top five quarterback because there was that much excitement about his skills set. It just never ma materialized at Penn State.
00:25:03
Speaker 2: Now, how will the quarterback position shake down if Rogers shows up?
00:25:08
Speaker 1: Do you cut Howard? There's just so much that we don't know.
00:25:13
Speaker 5: No, I think the person that's gonna be concerned is Mason Rudolph. Probably he's the eye man out just because you invested picks and you're. One of your whole selling points if you're Mike McCarthy, is your willingness and your excitement to work with Will Howard, And so the fan base is excited for him.
00:25:30
Speaker 4: They're gonna give.
00:25:31
Speaker 5: Him at least this year to see if he can do what everybody hopes he can do. And so I don't think by any shows he's the eye man out, especially being the name quarterback one going into these off season trainings with.
00:25:43
Speaker 4: Ay ride out. So I think if anybody, it's probably Mason. This I one out.
00:25:47
Speaker 2: Okay, let me refute that. And I see your point because they have talked Howard up. But would they go into a season with the forty two year old starter and then two backups that have never taken an NFL s.
00:26:00
Speaker 5: App That's why they hope he comes back, because if it's anybody, it would be a Rod.
00:26:06
Speaker 1: They would do that with no no.
00:26:08
Speaker 2: But my point is, I mean, a forty two year old is likely to get hurt. And if you have, if you have Howard and Aller behind him, they've never taken a snap.
00:26:17
Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean I get that from the experience standpoint. I just think if you're going to name Will Howard the number one quarterback this soon in the process with a Rod not on the rosters, and that's who's going to be your number one quarterback went in and I can't imagine that changing if a Rock comes and you're definitely not cutting Aller.
00:26:38
Speaker 2: We're talking to Trey Essex here on the Mark Madden Show. He's the host of the snapcom podcast along with Charlie Batch. Treit, what did you make of the situation with not getting a kay Lemon, you know, with with with Omar on the phone with him, even as Philadelphia kind of stole him up. I gotta be honest, I was mad at first when I heard him talk.
00:27:00
Speaker 1: I'm not impressed. I'm glad it turn out the way it did.
00:27:04
Speaker 5: Yeah, I think McKayle is an excellent wide receiver, unique talent, and that he's gonna do well with Philly. But I am absolutely glad we I think we dodged a bullet right there because I think getting Max Eanna Jordy is going is going to work wonders for our offensive line and our offense as a total, and takes us to that next level because I think we'll have a dominant off the line sooner than later.
00:27:27
Speaker 4: And we want to get that in mckayelem.
00:27:29
Speaker 5: And because after him, the drop off for tackles and in terior Lyman was a mass one.
00:27:35
Speaker 4: So I think from that.
00:27:36
Speaker 5: Perspective, we definitely dodged the bullet and worked out the way it worked out in our favor.
00:27:41
Speaker 4: But it was much to do about nothing for me, that.
00:27:44
Speaker 5: Whole uh and that whole drama, I guess with him being on the phone with the steersmen and Philly undercut him with that pig.
00:27:53
Speaker 4: I mean, it happens every year.
00:27:55
Speaker 5: It was just televised and with Pitt hosting, I can see why the ovius don't look great, But that's literally the name of the draft, so it happens all the time.
00:28:03
Speaker 2: What do you like about you on a Churs attributes. He's certainly got it all physically.
00:28:09
Speaker 5: He has some of the best feat I've ever seen for a guy that size. I was able to watch some good film afterwards, and all the clips I saw was a man who never stopped his feet, and as any good online coach would tell you, you can work with that and obviously his work. He's only played football for five years, so he's obviously a good and quick learner of things. For him to be at this level of where he's at, I think this guy is a limit and so he has. He's a massive human being, great feet and great balance and a willingness to just punch through your chest and plays with a little bit of an edge, which of course we all know, and so I'm excited to get him on board. I think he's gonna fit right in with the mentality that they showed they had last year. And I'm interested because Camping has proven that he can develop tackles, and they've already been switching Troy and Mason from the right side to the left side and practice. So I think this Orien has a chance to look completely different than it did last year, and I'm excited about that.
00:29:05
Speaker 2: Yeah, I hadn't heard they were King have a Cormicka left guard. That'd be interesting. And that begs the question, how tough is it to move from position to position on the old line.
00:29:13
Speaker 1: What's it entail trade? Because you did it, you moved all around.
00:29:18
Speaker 5: Yeah, it is tough initially these guys. Now you have the off season of work on it, you should do it, as it's hard to find somebody that's just strictly on the left side of the right side. Nowadays, these kids are a lot more athletic and a lot more versatile than I think we were, and I think coaches tended to pigeonhole you at one position a little bit more back then than they do now. But so I think a lot of these kids come in ready to play both sides. Troy Fontanum was a left tackle in Washington. Took him about a year last year, even though it was hurt the year before, and then he really got into his groove. So you saw he's as versatile as attackle as you need to be. And then the kid Maxianachoy only played one started at left tackle, but showed he right away he's quick at picking up stuff because what he's been able to do at right tackle has been amazing, But the hardest thing is just a distribution of weight, and from watching Maxianachy, he has great balance, so does Troy, So I think either one of them can play either side.
00:30:21
Speaker 2: Give me your best guest, Tray, what will the starting offensive line become week one from left tackle to right tackle?
00:30:30
Speaker 5: Best guest, the only for sure person that's gonna be at his position next year?
00:30:33
Speaker 4: I think is Zach Frazier obvious center center?
00:30:38
Speaker 5: My best guess, because I think they like the kid Max, and I think he's gonna come in. He's gonna press the coaches a lot because he looks the part, and I think he comes in and plays right tackle.
00:30:51
Speaker 4: Troy plays left tackle.
00:30:54
Speaker 5: And then it's gonna be interesting because Mason has played right guard his entire two years there, so I don't know if they move him and just keep that kad history between him and Troy. And then Spencer plays the other guards, so I'm not totally sure.
00:31:08
Speaker 4: Who's gonna play guard.
00:31:09
Speaker 5: So if I had the best guest, Troy left tackle, Spencer left guard, Zach Mason at right guard, and then Big Max Imax is what the fans call him at right tackle, that's.
00:31:19
Speaker 1: A good name.
00:31:21
Speaker 2: What about Dylan Cook, who they clearly really like and I thought he impressed in small sample size last year. What about this Dunker kid that the bro Bocan dude, who I think might have been their best value pick in the draft for where they got him.
00:31:36
Speaker 4: Yeah, Jenny's Dunker definitely the best value.
00:31:39
Speaker 5: That he is football all the time. He is a old lineman's old lineman, so I really like watching him. I think his biggest issue is past protection. He comes off the ball in the run game like nobody's business, but he's gonna have it a Jets man. After watching film, he does catch a little bit. He is slow with his hands and so pass protection he's gonna be a little bit behind both Mason and Spencer in that regard, and especially we're starting a forty two year quarterback forty two year old quarterback or a rookie or a first year starter, then you really need pass protection to be at its best. But I do think he plays in the mix as a swing guard inside. And then Dylan Cook Watt high praises for him. I think he is a starter in his league and he has to make something happen this year because you don't draft two first round well three first round tackles, but two first round tackles and not have them be there for the next seven to nine years. So if he's gonna start, it's going to be this year. So I think there will be a battle. And if they want to bring Max a long slow then that's Dylan Cook's best chance at starting, and then maybe we go back to the original lineup last year with Dylan Cook at left tackle, that's his best chance. But if not, he'll be the swing tackle this year.
00:32:49
Speaker 2: The only thing I wonder and I think Spencer Anderson's a good a good player and a good guard. But I think he's cursed by versatility, maybe traded, you know what I mean. I think he can play everywhere, and I think the guy who plays everywhere kind of gets type cast as a sub.
00:33:02
Speaker 1: Whether he deserves to start.
00:33:04
Speaker 5: Or not, do not know it, know, but yes, the gift and the curse for Spencer and it's in jack of all trades, master of none. But I think and I had a chance to talk to him last week at the draft his favorite position is right guard, and so he has a really good chance right now to really stake his claim especially if they're moving around a lot of guys and seeing where they are. This is his chance to do that, and so he really has to hone in. But also with him being as verstella as he is and knowing everything, that is so valuable. So he's stuck at that kind of purgatory right now, and this being a contract here, he is definitely honing in and wanting to start.
00:33:48
Speaker 4: It's his job.
00:33:49
Speaker 5: Isaacciamoo left, so he thinks it's it's his job to take them. Drafting Dunker kind of muddies things up a little bit, but I still think he's the lead man, and so it's just gonna matter of what side it is and what happens with the development of Maxiana Shore.
00:34:05
Speaker 2: You know what's growing on me is the second round pick Jeremy Bernard, the receiver.
00:34:08
Speaker 1: The only thing that threw me for a loop tray.
00:34:12
Speaker 2: I think with as many draft picks as they had, they should have traded up to the bottom of the first round or the top of the second and got a guy like Denzel Boston one of those first round talents. I don't dislike Bernard, but do you see what I'm saying.
00:34:26
Speaker 5: I do, and he is a talent, and I think Bernard body type and what we want from that third receiver fits this team better. Having a chance to talk to Charlie and what this West Coast offense.
00:34:39
Speaker 4: What you need in that. You do need big body.
00:34:41
Speaker 5: Receivers like both DK and Michael Pittman are, but you need somebody that's more slot.
00:34:48
Speaker 4: And can work in and out now that you can run. Gadget plays with as well.
00:34:51
Speaker 5: And I don't think there's Al Boston's that type of receiver, but I think Bernard offers more versatility and I think they hit it up the park with that thing.
00:34:57
Speaker 4: I'm excited.
00:34:58
Speaker 5: He reminds me of Deebo Samuel with how physical he runs the ball, runs with the ball after the catch, and I think they picked the right guy.
00:35:07
Speaker 2: Were there any sleeper picks that you like, anybody in the later wise that you think is going to contribute more a glance.
00:35:15
Speaker 5: Legion, I think that pick hits fills a hole that we desperately needed. We have not made any hay in any real significant grounds or games in the return game, and so Calvin Austin leaving made that hold.
00:35:34
Speaker 4: That much more glaring.
00:35:35
Speaker 5: And to get a guy who comes in and was the best and wasn't even close returner in football last year. Kind of reminds you, I'm gonna age myself right here. Tim Dwight played for the same team back in the early two thousands, those great ile teams that brought guys like Bob Sanders.
00:35:52
Speaker 4: And Robert Gallery into the league.
00:35:53
Speaker 5: And Tim Dwight was one of the best playmakers in all the college football and he has that same type of skill set to get him. And I'm already a fan of his because he was on a golf course when he got his draft call. So my man was out there getting his getting his eighteen holes in and got a call and said he was a Pittsburgh Steeler, doesn't have to change his uniform whatsoever.
00:36:14
Speaker 4: Coming over to from from Iowa.
00:36:16
Speaker 5: And I think that was huge because I didn't, honestly, I didn't know what we were going to do. I thought we were gonna do to know anything that we did the last years and put our running backs back there just for safety, you know, or if we're really going to put somebody back here at that punk returner that is dedicated to punk returning and not somebody that we also depend on as a big trying to receive it like we did.
00:36:37
Speaker 4: Would call Calvin Austin so oh.
00:36:40
Speaker 5: I think that was a huge pick up for us, and I'm excited to bring him on board.
00:36:44
Speaker 1: Trade great stuff. I appreciate the insight.
00:36:46
Speaker 2: Great meeting you at the at the S and T Bank Draft and it was a lot of fun.
00:36:51
Speaker 1: Yeah it was a late night, but it was. It was a lot of fun. And we'll talk again real soon.
00:36:55
Speaker 4: I hope, right, yes, we will. Mark, have a good one.
00:36:58
Speaker 2: That's the great tree Essex. Great to see him down at the Sheraton Station Square. And check out that snapcom podcast him and Charlie Batch do it it really it's not your typical athlete podcast, it's it's really good content. Now it's time to ask Mark anything brought to us by People's Natural Gas. Uh call now eight three three four one two wxdx. That's a three three four one two w xdx. Or you can leave a talkback.
00:37:25
Speaker 1: Via the microphone icon at the iHeartMedia app. Don't forget.
00:37:29
Speaker 2: We have Mike McCarthy, the Steelers coach, on tomorrow and boy this this Paris Byron game. If you're an all a soccer fan five to four Paris in the first leg. They gotta do this for ninety more minutes. And this is in the eighty six minute of Leg one. Uh Ask Mark Anything one oh five nine.
00:37:46
Speaker 8: Time now to send in your questions for Ask Mark Anything, Use the talkback Mike on your free iHeartRadio app and record your question for the super genius.
00:37:59
Speaker 2: It's The Woodie Show weekday mornings at six one of five ninety.
00:38:02
Speaker 4: X at Northwest Bank.
00:38:04
Speaker 9: They're here for what's next, including your favorite team's next playoff run with digital checking nine.
00:38:18
Speaker 1: I was next stay to Trey.
00:38:19
Speaker 2: The reason why Eana Troy has had great feet is because he played soccer.
00:38:23
Speaker 1: Duh.
00:38:24
Speaker 2: Interesting stuff from Trey about how he sees the offensive line fitting together week one, and honestly, his guest is as good as anybody's, probably better. There's a report in New England this is great that the Patriots are making contingency plans in case Mike Rabel quits on the heels of the Diana Russini scandal.
00:38:51
Speaker 1: And I don't see why I would. He didn't do any wrong.
00:38:55
Speaker 2: I just don't see why I would unless there's heat at home, which sounds oddly familiar. And there's also a report that the Patriots are considering options to replace Rabel if he quits, and one would be Mike Tomlin, which would be ironic beyond description.
00:39:17
Speaker 1: As you all know. Time to ask Mark.
00:39:20
Speaker 2: Anything brought to us by people's natural gas, that's people's hyphengass dot com.
00:39:24
Speaker 1: Let's go to Jude. Jude drawn with Mark.
00:39:28
Speaker 4: Super genius.
00:39:29
Speaker 10: Feelers need to tell Rogers to f off, But let's talk Penns. That game last night was super exciting. I thought the first period was enthralling. There were chances on both sides. I was happy to see Manta get involved. I thought that was a great play on the floor check and to center that to Elmer on the powerplay, it was interesting. To be honest, I don't mean to I don't mean to dis Geno, but the power play look to have more life and energetic legs kind of without him on it.
00:39:56
Speaker 3: Just want to get your thoughts.
00:39:57
Speaker 2: Oh yeah, I thought the powerplay is better without Geno because he's so succeptible to turnovers and can't defend going the other way. The Flyers have been attacking the Penguins power play looking for those shorthanded goals. They got one in this series, and without Geno out there, they're that much less vulnerable. I you know, people hate me for saying this, but I think this series is illustrated why Geno should be done here.
00:40:23
Speaker 3: Agreed.
00:40:23
Speaker 6: And I know you've mentioned scoring first is just a big key in the series.
00:40:26
Speaker 1: I mean, it's pretty obvious.
00:40:27
Speaker 10: But it seemed like the crowd was great last night and really got into it after that first goal.
00:40:32
Speaker 3: I know you were in the building.
00:40:33
Speaker 1: The crowd was absolutely great.
00:40:35
Speaker 2: It was It was a really fun night of Penguins hockey, not least because of the win and keeping the series alive.
00:40:42
Speaker 1: Let's go to Randy. Randy Askmark anything, ay, Mark.
00:40:46
Speaker 7: You planing on seeing the sex Pistols when they tore the US this fall?
00:40:51
Speaker 2: Yeah, I had tickets. They canceled. I had tickets for Cleveland, but they're still good. It's at the Agora Theater. I forget when August September, but I yeah, I plan on going. Barring conflict. But that's not really the sex Pistols. It's uh, it's Cook Jones and Matt Locke with a fill in singer Frank Carter, who's very good. But you know, how can it really be the Pistols with that John Lyden.
00:41:15
Speaker 7: Yeah, I get what you mean. I mean I'm playing on seeing them too. I'm feeling a little bit conflicted, but I just come to realize this is the closest to the sex pistols.
00:41:25
Speaker 3: I'm ever gonna get to seeing No, I don't.
00:41:27
Speaker 1: I'm conflicted.
00:41:28
Speaker 2: I'm gonna go because I think I'll be entertained. But uh, but I wish Lyden were there. Thank you for the call. He's coming here. Don't forget in the fall at the rock scene with Public Image Limited and I've seen p I L and it's always really good.
00:41:41
Speaker 6: Let's go to a talkback, Mark, which skill that Mary Olmu had back what he played?
00:41:48
Speaker 4: Would you wish that Sydney Crosby had.
00:41:51
Speaker 2: I wouldn't because that would compromise him as a player. Sid Sid's skill set fits together perfectly. Sid's Mary was unique. I'm content with each of them as they were. Let's go to another talkback.
00:42:07
Speaker 1: Hey, Mark as Jenning's Dunker aka Red Rednecky replaced Aaron Rodgers as your favorite Steeler.
00:42:17
Speaker 4: Thanks.
00:42:19
Speaker 2: Aaron Rodgers replaced himself as my favorite Steeler. He took himself out of the running more accurately. Jennings Dunker. Nah. Pat Farmer says he's a fan of mine, so now he's my favorite Steeler. But nonetheless, as regards Jennings, Dunker, come and get So let's go to Rick Rick. Ask Mark anything, Hey.
00:42:39
Speaker 6: Mark, I feel that if the Pens would have been swept in four that it would have been a lost season.
00:42:46
Speaker 3: But then winning these two.
00:42:47
Speaker 6: Games, like, I feel much better about their season as a whole.
00:42:51
Speaker 2: Gotta win, got gotta win. Can't lose to the Flyers in the first round. Can't lose to anybody in the first round. If you lose in the first round, then making the playoffs hurt more than helped.
00:43:02
Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean, I mean, so you don't have any versus being swept.
00:43:06
Speaker 4: I mean that that doesn't change your opinion.
00:43:08
Speaker 1: Right, I don't want to be swept.
00:43:10
Speaker 2: But no, you lose to the Flyers, I mean, come on, right, Yeah, I agree. I mean, like I think if they lose this first round series, it would have been better to finish bottom five as they were projected and get the corresponding draft pick.
00:43:24
Speaker 1: But thank you for the call.
00:43:26
Speaker 4: When
Speaker 1: We got them.
00:18:16

00:20:22
Speaker 1: Are off and happy, but they have no real impact in this world, unless, of course, they're quick enough to make the NFL the X at one oh five nine, This is unreal. Five to four now Paris over Barron.
