ABOUT THIS EPISODE
Most of us hear “minister” and think “give counsel, give guidance, help people make decisions.” So what does it even mean to minister to God? Does God need our advice or spiritual counseling? If not, why does Scripture say, “they ministered to the Lord”? In this episode of Maintaining Fire, Desmond Flores walks through the Bible’s own language for ministry and shows why ministry to God must come before ministry for people. We look at: Old Testament “ministering to the Lord” Deuteronomy 10:8–9 (NIV) – the Levites carry the ark, stand before the Lord to minister, and bless in His name. 1 Samuel 2:11 (NIV) – Samuel “ministered before the Lord under Eli the priest.” New Testament “ministering to the Lord” Acts 13:1–2 (ESV) – prophets and teachers in Antioch were worshiping / ministering to the Lord and fasting when the Holy Spirit spoke. Word studies that change how we see ministry Hebrew שָׁרַת – sharath (H8334): to minister, serve, attend, wait on – the language of attendants before a superior. Hebrew עֲבֹדָה – avodah (from avad): can mean work, serve, and worship – the same word used for everyday labor and service to God. Greek διάκονος – diakonos (G1249): servant, attendant, minister – the root behind our word “minister.” Greek λειτουργέω – leitourgeō (G3008): to perform public or priestly service – used in Acts 13:2 for “ministering to the Lord.” Romans 12:1 (NIV) – why your body and everyday life are your “living sacrifice… true and proper worship.” You’ll see why: You can be busy in ministry and still rarely minister to God Himself. Your Monday‑to‑Friday job can be worship when it’s done as “avodah” – work, service, and worship united. True ministry starts with standing before the Lord, not just working for Him or counseling others. If you’ve ever wondered, “What does it really mean to minister to the Lord?” or “How can my normal job be ministry to God?”, this episode is for you.
