ABOUT THIS EPISODE
In this episode of Off the Back Seat: Fan Edition, Manaia Stewart and Ben Hurley pick up D'Arcy Waldegrave in the back of a brand-new GWM Cannon Alpha Plug-in Hybrid!
Every Warriors fan has a breaking point. Thirty years of near misses, false dawns and heartbreak should have found D'Arcy Waldegrave's by now. It hasn't. The veteran broadcaster keeps coming back, and this episode is a masterclass in exactly why.
It starts where a lot of them do, watching the debut game over a few DB Bitters with mates in Christchurch, and learning the lesson every Warriors fan eventually learns: they can look brilliant and still lose. From there the yarns roll: the time he accidentally dislocated a Warriors staffer's shoulder in a media touch game, the prized Stacey Jones-worn jersey he values above all others, and the vintage jersey collection that's tipped into full obsession.
Underneath it, the good stuff: why these losses hit New Zealanders harder than anyone else's, why Mount Smart feels like a national gathering, and the simplest, truest reason he's never walked away: "I don't follow and support the Warriors because they're winners. I follow and support the Warriors because they're my team."
