Follow all her coverage online. of the panthers because it is top notch and we want to see what she thinks about the team heading into the opener against the bears and sheena joins us right now on the mac and bone show sheena what's going on how you feeling Good morning. I feel good.
00:00:35
Speaker 2: How are you guys?
00:00:36
Speaker 1: We're doing good. You can't be bad.
00:00:38
Speaker 3: Ready to go out there and hit somebody for real. You know what I mean? Football-wise. Or watch people.
00:00:43
Speaker 1: Please don't say that.
00:00:44
Speaker 2: I'm in traffic. Don't say that.
00:00:45
Speaker 3: No, watch people.
00:00:46
Speaker 1: No, you don't do that.
00:00:47
Speaker 3: Watch people hit people for real. Not you in the car. No, I mean like we're ready to watch people.
00:00:52
Speaker 1: There you go. There you go.
00:00:53
Speaker 3: Let's clean that up a little bit here.
00:00:54
Speaker 1: What do you think, Sheena? You're very online. You're very like in touch with kind of like what the fans are doing online. I love that. And the Bears fans, I mean, ever since the Bryce trade and I haven't really gotten involved with it, but Lord knows the four man rush going at those Bears fans every day, every hour. Like, do you find the Bears fans annoying on social media? Because it's funny. We played this podcast guy that was saying the Panther fans are the ones that are annoying. It's like, I think the Panther fans are just responding to this condescending post Bryce trade Bears thing.
00:01:28
Speaker 2: I agree. I don't feel like Panthers Twitter starts it. Well, sometimes they do, but in this case, they didn't start it. They're just finishing it, and I've never understood the animosity from Bears fans because, like, look at the haul that y'all got in the trade. I don't understand the anger.
00:01:42
Speaker 1: Yeah, it's like they– I guess they want to throw that in our face or whatever, but it's– It's so weird.
00:01:47
Speaker 3: Yeah. Sheena, your partner Joe Person on the Panthers Collective podcast put out some stats this morning about in his time as a Panthers starting quarterback in the first two weeks of the year, Bryce Young is the lowest rated passer in the league for those first couple weeks. So how important is it for Bryce to get off to a good start in this game, in this season? And do you think he's ready to get off to that hot start that we haven't seen before?
00:02:13
Speaker 2: I do think he's ready. He has a great command of this office. He has some weapons. He has some protection and he has more time in this system. You got to think about the instability he was facing the first couple of years. But, you know, they added Darren Bevel to that to the staff. So really excited to see what he brings to it. When people talk about the early season, you know, woes and things like that, thank God the season doesn't end at week two. But I get it. I get the need to start fast and to start strong, especially for a team that was kind of so up and down defensively. All season, they would win one, lose one, win one, lose one. So I think it's important for the team as a whole to hit the ground running. And not to mention, you know, this is the first time the home crowd is really seeing them since that crazy wild card game last year.
00:02:59
Speaker 1: Oh, yeah. I think they want to carry over that energy from that game. I can't wait to be at the bank. and kind of experience that again, because it was so awesome. It really was. How worried do you think we should be as fans about the, some of the offensive struggles in the preseason, right? One, you know, you had the Houston practice, you had the, you know, one touchdown drive and five first team drives, the rough O-line joint practice. Like how much does that worry you? I will say this. I'm glad it's the Bears defense and not the Houston defense on Sunday. What do you think though?
00:03:34
Speaker 2: And that's the thing. It's not Daniel Hunter and that pass rush. And Will Anderson and that Houston. The Bears are not the Texans. And if I'm worried about anything for this game tomorrow, it's not the Bears' defense. As a matter of fact, I think this is probably a really good opponent, secondary-wise, for us to see what Brad Izzik is going to do as far as opening that playbook and taking some shots down the field. I think there's a great opportunity here, like you said, to start fast. But I don't think that the preseason is an indication of what we need to be worried about on Sunday. You got to think about the fact that, you know, it was a patchwork offensive line for the most part because Damian Lewis and Rob Hunt missed a lot of training camp. And when they did join, they joined late in camp and they were kind of still getting their footing. So I would think that was just knocking a little bit of the rust off in the preseason. And I think both of those guys are ready to go now.
00:04:28
Speaker 3: Sheena, what's the concern level with Jonathan Brooks, who's been limited with the groin injury this week? As you know, anything involving him, we're going to kind of freak out about. What do you think his status ultimately is going to be leading up to Sunday?
00:04:42
Speaker 2: I think he'll play. I think that the abundance of caution is warranted. I mean, it's just kind of part of the course with kind of how his luck has been. But I think he'll be fine for Sunday. I think that they are, again, operating out of abundance of caution just because making sure– he took a lot of reps in the preseason and in training camp with Chuba out. So I think that they're kind of just watching that really, really closely, not wanting to re-aggravate anything unnecessarily. And so I don't have a ton of concern right now. I think that it was just Aaron on the side of caution.
00:05:17
Speaker 1: Sheena, what do you think about the matchup between that Bears offense, which is potent– and this Panthers defense that even with guys like Pat Jones and Skorton out, we're all so excited to see Phillips and Devin Lloyd. What do you think about that matchup? Do you think the Panthers defense can hold their own in that matchup?
00:05:38
Speaker 2: I think it's going to be a really good challenge for them. You know, the Panthers were actually first in defending play action, and that is how Chicago sets up at least a third of their passing plays, and they're really good at that. They were one of the best teams in the league at doing that, and the Panthers are one of the best teams in the league at defending it. So it'll be good to see that, and it'll be a challenge for Evro to see if he can match all of the misdirection that Ben Johnson and the Bears are going to bring because that's all you heard the defenders talk about all week long. That's all you heard Devin Lloyd talk about. That's all you heard J.C. Horn talk about. Mike Jack, you know, they're going to try to disguise some things and get people's eyes in the wrong direction. And luckily, those guys that I just mentioned are vets. So they've seen kind of a litany of things as far as NFL offenses, just being consistently disciplined and, you know, making sure that they're they're running their game plan. I think that they'll be fine, but I think it'll be a really fun matchup to watch.
00:06:30
Speaker 3: Sheena, I thought you had some really insightful stuff on the Panthers Collective the other day with you dunking– well, I almost called him unk. I almost called it dunking unk. You dunking Joe Person.
00:06:40
Speaker 1: Dunking unk. That should be it. Please don't.
00:06:42
Speaker 3: Hilarious. Keep that between us, please. My Lord, I don't need Joe Mattamy there. Dunking Joe the other day.
00:06:47
Speaker 2: I can't wait to tweet that afterward.
00:06:49
Speaker 1: That is pretty funny. You fell into a good one there, Bill.
00:06:52
Speaker 3: Yeah, so– yeah.
00:06:54
Speaker 2: Oh, boy.
00:06:55
Speaker 3: You added some insight on the, we always focus on the Panther side of the potential Bryce Young contract, but what about the Bryce Young side and maybe what his camp is feeling about his future contract?
00:07:09
Speaker 2: I think that Bryson can't feel that his best ball is, you know, to come. And honestly, maybe accepting an extension right now isn't reflective of what he feels like he can do and what he can bring. It might be an underpayment right now. So I think he's willing to bet on himself. And just because no one has said that extension talks have happened or taken place does not mean that they are not happening. And you can just read between the lines on that. You know, a lot of people are saying, oh, you know, there's body language. And I don't think the Panthers think that Bryce is it. And they're trying to make him prove it. I don't think that's it. I think it's just negotiations over the amount. I'm not going to say that I don't think that that's it. I know that that's not it. I know that the Panthers have come to Bryce Young with the expectation that he is their future. So I don't think that it is a position of the franchise that, oh, we don't know or we're unsure. That's not what's going on right now.
00:08:01
Speaker 1: Wow, that's pretty strong right there.
00:08:03
Speaker 3: Sheena, you.
00:08:05
Speaker 1: You were there for the David Tepper presser. We have not seen him converse about Panthers-only subjects with the media.
00:08:13
Speaker 3: Sheena's laughing.
00:08:14
Speaker 1: There were some entertaining moments in there, Sheena. There were definitely some entertaining moments. I felt for my man Mike Kay in there, too.
00:08:20
Speaker 3: What did you think?
00:08:21
Speaker 1: What were your takeaways from talking to Tepper?
00:08:23
Speaker 2: I think that he started it out defensively and kind of, you know, settled in because he hasn't been available to the media. He hasn't been available during combine or anything like that or postseason, you know, exit interview, none of that stuff. We haven't seen him since he fired Frank Reich and he was getting irritated when he fired Frank Reich. So I think that he kind of, I wouldn't say has a mistrust of the media, but I think it's kind of a touch and go because he has been beat up in the media before, deservedly so at times. And I think that the tide is turning. You know, he's taking a step back. And it might be a sense of, you know, how the players go through media training. I feel like David Tepper is going through a little media training of his own, so to speak.
00:09:08
Speaker 1: Yeah, interesting. I will say this. He said it to y'all. He's talked about the reason I'm not involved and you're not hearing from me as much is I trust Brant, Dan, and Dave. And I think that's the best part, right?
00:09:23
Speaker 2: I told everybody that. I said, listen, I said– David Tepper's involvement is less an indictment on him and more of an indictment on his confidence in who he had coaching and in his GM. And I also don't think that Dan Morgan would have accepted a job if it were otherwise.
00:09:42
Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. No, that's good news. That's definitely good news. Sheena, we appreciate it. Thanks so much for coming on. We'll see you on Sunday.
00:09:53
Speaker 2: Thank you. Thank you guys for having me.
