Speaker 1: We're going to talk to one of the absolute fan favorites when it comes to media members covering your Carolina Panthers. She is at Sheena, two E's, at Sheena underscore Marie three on X slash Twitter. She is Sheena Quick, and she joins us here to try to figure out what has happened to our Carolina Panthers the last two weeks.
00:00:21
Speaker 2: Sheena, how have you been? What's going on?
00:00:24
Speaker 3: I've been good.
00:00:25
Speaker 2: How are you guys? What's happening? We're doing good. We are doing good.
00:00:29
Speaker 1: I think we all needed a weekend where the Panthers didn't play, where we could watch other teams play, and we got help yet again and stayed in first place. We were having a discussion earlier, Sheena, about Tampa in the last 24 hours or so overtaking Carolina on DraftKings as the favorite in the division.
00:00:50
Speaker 2: Do you feel like.
00:00:53
Speaker 1: We shouldn't be favorites anymore, should we?
00:00:56
Speaker 2: I feel like that's fair, sadly. What do you think?
00:01:00
Speaker 4: Unfortunately, it is fair, but this is the NFC South. I don't think anyone should be the favorite right now. This is just such a wacky, strange division.
00:01:09
Speaker 1: Yeah, I think you've got a valid point there. Just like we thought about the Panthers at 3-2, in this division, Sheena, just when you think somebody's on a roll, then they'll lay an egg, you know?
00:01:21
Speaker 4: Right, right, exactly. Like, you just never know from week to week what these teams are going to look like. I mean, did you have it on your bingo card that the Bucs will win a game without Baker Mayfield completing any passes?
00:01:33
Speaker 2: No, no, I didn't. I thought we would be the embarrassment. Atlanta said, here, watch this.
00:01:39
Speaker 4: Insane, absolutely insane.
00:01:41
Speaker 3: Sheena, what do you think of the Avero dismissal, and how impactful do you think a move like that could be within the season?
00:01:53
Speaker 4: I've always felt like this was his prove-it season. I think that this being his prove-it season was kind of overshadowed with people talking about, is this Bryce's prove-it year? Is this Xavier Leguette's prove-it year? For me, it's always been Everett's prove-it year. I felt like they gave him some grace with the injuries he'd had on that side of the ball and all the resources that had been spent on the offensive side of the ball. This offseason, last offseason, they made it a point to focus on defense heavily. They spent a ton of money on that side of the ball, and week one was just abysmal for that reason. And I know he's had his share of injuries, especially with Mike Jack and J.C. Horn, but everybody other than Nick Skorton was on the field in week one. I just think that that was just, for me, it's always been a win more so than an if after that game.
00:02:42
Speaker 1: What, um, so what do you expect to change? Like, obviously we're waiting on Mike Jack and horn and that can make a difference. It seems like there's a chance Phillips can come back this week, but like, do you expect things to look different? I mean, it's, you can't really overhaul a scheme completely, but do you, do you think things will be done a bit differently with Todd wash running the show?
00:03:04
Speaker 2: I think so.
00:03:05
Speaker 4: I mean, other than just the product on the field, I think the product on the field is a testament to maybe a difference in philosophies. I was kind of hinted at that. He didn't really go into detail about it. But I do think that we see some more Latham Ransom. He's kind of disappeared the last couple of weeks, and it gave me shades of Jeremy Chin when Ebro first got here. You guys remember that guy?
00:03:25
Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:03:26
Speaker 4: So Latham Ransom being a complete ghost these last couple of weeks after being impactful the first part of the season was really interesting to me. And I do think that I've seen the rumors floating around that they're going to a 4-3. It's not completely... out of the question for me because they do still have the personnel to fill the 4-3 scheme. I don't know if they'll do that or if they'll try to slowly introduce it. I'm not sure. But what I do expect is for the Panthers to not have the Broncos running down their throat on Sunday.
00:03:56
Speaker 2: That would be nice. I request that. I'm asking for that.
00:04:01
Speaker 3: What do you think of the addition of D'Angelo Hall to the staff? And the Canales comments about not that I'm paraphrasing, but that D.
00:04:10
Speaker 2: Hall.
00:04:10
Speaker 3: Questioned the status quo when he was here. Yeah, he questioned the status quo. What do you think of the fact that he's back and what Canales said about that?
00:04:19
Speaker 4: I think that goes back to the philosophy. I think that Evo, I'm not taking away from his football mind and him being absolutely, you know, intelligent and a rock star. As JC Horn said, a wizard at breaking down other teams' offenses and things like that. I just think he was somebody that became a prisoner to his own stubbornness. Sometimes when, you know, it seems to me like he's one of those guys that would rather be right than successful. And that's always, you know, that's always slated for doom.
00:04:43
Speaker 2: Yeah.
00:04:44
Speaker 3: Yeah.
00:04:44
Speaker 4: It comes before the fall. And the more that we're hearing about that staff and just the timing of D'Angelo Hall coming back, anyone that challenges that or challenges the status quo and then you're subsequently dismissed. And then as soon as, you know, the DC is going, you're back. I mean, I think that that says a lot.
00:05:01
Speaker 2: It did.
00:05:01
Speaker 1: It was almost Dave kind of wanted everybody to hear that. I feel like it was weird. Cause that was a question right at the end of the presser where, you know, if it wasn't a follow-up wasn't asked about the Angela, he might not have said that.
00:05:12
Speaker 2: So yeah, that felt kind of telling.
00:05:14
Speaker 1: It really does. We got to go to the offensive side of the ball. Things ain't exactly Rosie over there. This O line is just making everything so hard to do.
00:05:24
Speaker 2: Yeah.
00:05:26
Speaker 1: Is there any, Brady Christensen is a guy, I know you were asking about that, I think it was Friday's presser. And yesterday he did finally say, hey, he is good to go. We're putting him on this, you know, open up his 21 day window. Like he's a dude, Sheena, where like, I feel like he can definitely help. The only question is like, he's so versatile. What position do they plug him in at? Because I think he could be better than what we got at multiple positions right now.
00:05:51
Speaker 4: Definitely at left tackle and center, for sure.
00:05:54
Speaker 1: Those two, for sure.
00:05:55
Speaker 4: But the question becomes, do you move Monroe Freeling to his more natural position at left tackle and plug Brady Christensen in there? And maybe give the rookie Sam Heck a look at center.
00:06:05
Speaker 2: I wouldn't be mad at that at all.
00:06:08
Speaker 4: I made a tweet during the game on Thursday, or maybe right afterwards, that that was the same week one starting line, except for Damian Lewis was out and Corey Bullock had stepped into his position due to injuries. But other than that, you know, and outside of Monroe Freeling, everybody else is a vet. Everybody else was slated in as the week one started. There's no way they should have put that performance up on week eight. So in addition to Everett's dismissal, I'm pretty sure Dave Canales lost a little bit of sleep trying to figure out how he's going to fix this offensive line.
00:06:35
Speaker 2: Big time. Big time. Trade deadline is a week from today, right? Is that correct, Mac? Yeah, yeah. The 10th. Do you expect the Panthers, Sheena, to be active at the deadline? How do you think that's going to play out?
00:06:46
Speaker 4: I do expect them to be active at the deadline, but I think a lot of that weighs on how the game goes on Sunday. If you get back to 500, even if you don't get back to 500, it's still a salvageable season because you're in the NFC South. So I do expect them to at least be in the market for some O-line help and maybe some cornerback help, but... Depending on how this Sunday goes for a lot of different teams, that's going to impact who's going to be available. Some of these teams are doing fire sales because the season is lost. Some teams are waiting to see what their status is after Sunday. Does that make them a buyer or a seller at the deadline? So I think a lot hinges on these week nine games.
00:07:21
Speaker 2: No doubt. No doubt.
00:07:22
Speaker 1: So, Sheena, people are sending in, I know you're shocked by this, comments and questions about Bryce. They would like us to get your two cents on this. I'm sure you've noticed it and had it going on in your mentions. We get a lot of this now. The people that disappeared while Bryce was balling, right, at a high level, have now reappeared on our text line online. And they want to give him a lot of blame for what's been happening. How much blame do you think Bryce deserves for what's happened the last two weeks?
00:07:54
Speaker 2: Or do you put it on the O-line exclusively? How do you feel about that?
00:07:59
Speaker 4: I think it starts at the O-line, and I don't want Bryce to get... feelings of discomfort that he had in 2023. I mean, you get sacked 60-plus times and hit, you know, I don't even know how many times that starts to mess with your mechanics. And I wouldn't say confidence, but just how you go through your reads and things like that. So to act as though the offensive line play hasn't been abysmal and that Bryce is just stinking it up, I think is just super disingenuous. Super disingenuous. Everybody has seen what he can do. And I will say this. We're not sure what's going on with the knee.
00:08:33
Speaker 2: Yes.
00:08:34
Speaker 4: He doesn't seem as willing to take off running as before because we know Bryce is an athlete. We've seen what he can do. And that may have been the difference in him making that O-line look better than it actually was earlier this season. Because, again, this is kind of the same starting offensive line. It's not a makeshift patchwork offensive line like, you know, like they were playing within the secondary on Thursday because of all the injuries. This is who you guys have slated to be the starters week one, you know, with the exception of Damian Lewis. For me, I know that all the stats that Bryce was leading the league in, one of the stats that he was leading the league in was he was the most pressured quarterback. He was performing in spite of that pressure. That's not even a category that you want him to have to thrive in.
00:09:13
Speaker 2: You don't want to have to.
00:09:14
Speaker 4: Be under pressure all the time. And eventually that weighs down. You can't always outperform a bad offensive line.
00:09:20
Speaker 2: No, you're right.
00:09:21
Speaker 1: And that's the thing. You said it. We saw him do it for five weeks, right? And eventually, the dam is broken here. And I do think... I was saying, Sheena, after the Bucs game, he's not escaping the way he was previously.
00:09:36
Speaker 2: And I think the need.
00:09:38
Speaker 1: I know Bryce haters or Bryce doubters, I should say, are going to say, y'all are making excuses.
00:09:42
Speaker 2: But, like, something was off. The knee thing makes sense, you know?
00:09:48
Speaker 4: Can we really say that the people that are overzealous Bryce doubters, can we really say that they employ logic for real? I think we're giving them a little bit more credit than they deserve. Anytime I hear they hit height, has anything to do with the last two weeks, I'm like, yeah, I'm exiting the conversation. We're giving those guys, we're giving that group way too much credit. They don't employ logic anyway.
00:10:10
Speaker 3: Well, yeah, they can't even spell logic. And it's funny that they're going after Bryce's height. I would guess, Sheena, that some of those guys are probably like 5'7.
00:10:19
Speaker 4: That's the thing that always gets me. I'm like, let's see your height. Oh, you're just not tall enough. I mean, the Chargers are sitting at, what, 0-8 now, or are they 0-7?
00:10:28
Speaker 3: 0-7.
00:10:29
Speaker 4: 0-7. And only because they had a bye.
00:10:32
Speaker 1: Big old strapping quarterback. And look how he looks.
00:10:36
Speaker 2: I mean, all right.
00:10:37
Speaker 4: You just cannot outplay– you can't continuously outplay a bad offensive line. You just can't do that.
00:10:43
Speaker 2: That's way too much stress. I agree.
00:10:45
Speaker 1: Sheena, great stuff as always. I look forward– to reading some angry texts from Bryce Dowders right now.
00:10:53
