Speaker 1: He is Chuck Oliver. He is the host of the aptly named Chuck Oliver Show. 71 radio stations in nine states. It's college football talk, and it's a lot of good southern college football talk. And Chuck Oliver joins us here to talk college football. Hey, Chuck, what's going on, man? How you doing?
00:00:18
Speaker 2: I'm so happy to talk college football with y'all. I got a note from my producer that said, Hey, there's a station in Charlotte. I was like, really? After Sunday's game, really? But he said, no, no, no, no. It's college. I was like, I'm down with them. Absolutely.
00:00:32
Speaker 1: I said that Falcons, right?
00:00:34
Speaker 3: I want to know that I said that requested before what happened on Sunday.
00:00:38
Speaker 1: That was a yes. Oh, that's true. I didn't even think of harassing you about your Falcons. We're above that, Chuck. We're above that here. Hey, because here in the Carolinas, we've got some football issues on our hands with various teams. I want to ask you what you think about Clemson. Like, they came to life, it took a while, but they came to life against the Tar Heels. Tate Reynolds seems talented, but he's young. Heck, I thought the O-line actually played decent for a change against Carolina this Is there a chance for Clemson to salvage something out of this year, or do you think this one's going to end up looking ugly when it's done?
00:01:15
Speaker 2: I think there's a chance Clemson's bad. And I don't mean bad versus the great decade and a half they just had, or even bad versus last year when they were average. I mean, there's a chance Clemson is really bad. They have a few NFL guys who got the defensive two deep. their offensive line is in big trouble. They don't have a quarterback who's ready to play right now. I bet you, if you're not a Clemson fan or a Cal fan, I don't think anybody listens to the Cal fan. If you're not a Clemson fan and you're watching this game Friday night, you think about that. You say you busted your tail all week. You probably had to go to your kid's high school game Friday, Saturday, and Sunday's already committed by things that are not from you. Friday night, if you stay up and watch this game, it literally is for one reason. You're, you're watching to see what happens when Dabo loses. That's all you're after. You want to see Dabo on the sidelines, every play that goes wrong. Like we're looking for the horns out. Or is it humble dabbo again? So that's literally, that's the only reason anyone's watching this game Friday, right?
00:02:20
Speaker 3: Chuck, I'm laughing as a Gamecock fan, but I probably shouldn't be because the other day was highly disappointing what happened in the second half against Mississippi State. Do you see a path here where the Gamecocks can sort of have a year like they did two years ago, which may help save Beamer? Or do you think this is going to end up turning in the wrong direction for Beamer and the Gamecocks here in 2026?
00:02:44
Speaker 2: Speaker 2, um, I think Clemson was, you know, there's a big, big history there of Tommy Bowden, for instance, coaching his way into employment in October or December, because even like it was like three years in a row, we're going to fire you Tommy. And then when you beat Bobby Bowden, whoever, and South Carolina to close the season, the Clemson coach ain't getting fired at that point. And so that's why they whacked him that night and what a wake forest. They were like, yeah, we're not going to give you a chance this time. My understanding of Shane's done and some of it is projection because you're looking at the schedule now and it hasn't really gotten difficult yet. And now it's after three games and God bless in the first two weeks. Cause running it up on people. I was like, every blowout is not created equal for a South Carolina fan, for a player, for a coach. They needed some blowouts for C with proof of concept. And then what happened this past week, but even when they were up 16, nothing, if you were watching that game, they had not played particularly well when they were up 16 to nothing. Yeah. They had a pick on the first play of the game from Mississippi State and went 16 yards. They had a touchdown called back. It was all kinds of issues. So I think Shane's done, and it hasn't even got tough yet.
00:03:58
Speaker 1: We're talking with Chuck Oliver, host of the Chuck Oliver Show, talking college football. That is what he does. Chuck, so I saw on the Chuck Oliver Show Twitter page, I saw a clip of you talking about your thoughts about, hey, I think Ole Miss, you know, maybe they should be the number one team in the country after what they did to LSU. Well, you know in this league, in the SEC, there ain't no rest for you. They got to go down to the swamp where they are cranked up for a change about a team with a legit offense for a change. And Florida's favored in Vegas. Like, what do you think? Talk about Ole Miss and their start of the season. It's been great. But this game against Florida is no joke, man.
00:04:37
Speaker 2: Yeah, Ole Miss is the better team, and they could lose by 14 Saturday. There's teeth in Gainesville again. And, I mean, an offense that is just incendiary. When they get Eric Singleton back, understand, I think he's the fastest player in college football, and he's probably going to be their fourth receiver in the passing game. I'm not even including Jaden Ball. Uh, so Florida, their offense is unbelievable. And then they tackled pretty well against Auburn and they had a confused Auburn quarterback. And so it kind of worked for him in a shootout, but like If y'all watched Florida Auburn, I did. And Auburn was right there on the scoreboard the entire time. There wasn't one minute of the game I thought that Auburn was the better team. Literally not one minute. So that is life in the SEC. I think Ole Miss is the best team as far as resume right now. And that could change as late as about, I don't know, when you're going back for your second run through Golden Corral's line. By the time you're doing that Saturday night, they could already have lost it.
00:05:38
Speaker 3: Chuck already knows this very well. He knows my routine here. We're talking to Chuck Oliver. He's at King CFB on his Twitter page, at Chuck Oliver Show on his show's Twitter page. All the links are there for his great content. Chuck, it's not hyperbole to say that the way NC State lost on Saturday is one of the worst ways to lose a football game we've ever seen. How do you think they respond from that? Do you think that that is something that you don't recover from? Or do you think that could galvanize them a little bit to maybe have a Dave Doran type year where they get to that nine win range again?
00:06:16
Speaker 2: Are we, are we in the age? And I don't know this. I don't think we are. I'm either suspicious or I'm cynical. I don't know. Are we still in the age where Tim Tebow can give that speech that is so emotional that you put it on a plaque and like nail it to the side of the stadium afterward, we will never lose again. We will never try harder than anyone. Like, are we in that age right now? Cause I don't think when I look at NC state, I really don't see CJ Bailey doing that. I, I, very talented quarterback. Obviously we've seen the blue sky. Was it the Georgia tech game last year? Holy smokes. And that was a big game to wake forest last year. Then there's been a pretty low floor, some Saturdays as well. So wildly talented kid and they had to choose, all right, how are we going to deal with this? Do we let CJ go and build up the lines or do we bring in a bunch of his buddies from high school and see how that works? Well, they chose choice B and it has not worked so far. And CJ, like I said, he's a very skilled kid. But he's still raw and he's just not finished product at all. And so I don't see this being a good thing. This is very unusual for Dave Doran team. I thought I always knew salty on both lines of the scrimmage. We're going to bully you, run the ball some. That is not the profile of this team.
00:07:31
Speaker 1: No, it's not, man. And to your point about the Tebow speech, if C.J. Bailey tries to stand up this week and give that speech, some of his teammates are going to be like, sit down, you dummy. You didn't even know how to take a safety correctly. I feel for him, man, but that was a bad one for a third-year starting quarterback.
00:07:47
Speaker 3: Um, CJ really dropped the ball and I mean that he actually dropped the ball for them.
00:07:51
Speaker 1: Well played. Well played. We're talking with Chuck Oliver, host of the Chuck Oliver show, talking some college football, Chuck, the sec matchups, you know, you talk so much sec ball. I mean, it's just, it's ridiculous this week. The amount of great matchups, intriguing matchups in the sec. Um, uh, what do you think about a game like Texas and Tennessee? Um, Tennessee's biggest test was Georgia Tech, and after a little bit of a slow start, they rolled them. But I still question, against a roster as talented, even at home, against a roster as talented as Texas, is the freshman quarterback, Faison Brandon, up for this? What do you think about that game?
00:08:32
Speaker 3: Test.
00:08:32
Speaker 2: He's been fantastic. I've been so impressed with him in the run game to this point as well. Really good stuff from him as an intentional runner. And you don't always get that from a freshman. Most of the time it's panic. So I really liked that. Here's the bigger point for me on Saturday. I think Texas, I think they go on the road. They get it done. We've seen start do that before he went into Tuscaloosa with Quinn. You were set that stadium on fire, got out of town, did the same thing. Ann Arbor. with Quinn Ewers. So he can do it. It absolutely can. I think the big picture here, look at the potential home schedule. If you cherry picked it for Texas in a year in the big 12, because they're.
00:09:10
Speaker 1: All right, Chuck, I thought he might bounce.
00:09:18
Speaker 2: Oh, there he is. That their fans would be able to go visit every year. This is the reason in an average season in the sec, you get to make a road trip to Knoxville. You get to go to Athens. You get to have Florida come see you. It is an unbelievable transition. They made just having the game. That's why they did this.
00:09:40
Speaker 3: Yeah.
00:09:41
Speaker 2: Chuck.
00:09:41
Speaker 3: Well, we have a lot of teams here in the Carolinas with a lot of issues that you've gone through. What have you thought of the job that Manny Diaz has done? his first two years into this year. Now they have a guy that I know Nate Shepard's not going to win the Heisman, but he's putting up ridiculous numbers. What's your overall thoughts on Manny? Diaz and what he's done for this Duke program?
00:10:03
Speaker 2: I'm, I'm probably not the best person to ask. Cause I'm a big, big, big Manny BS man. Strong beer game. Even like everything about Manny, I like his aggressiveness on defense. I think he got absolutely jobbed on the dairy and mints effect. Like I'm a big fan of Manny and that's going back to when he was a DC, like Mississippi state time. I always know what it is with him. We're going that way. Like we're here we come quarterback. But the organizational skills, everything he's been able to show up there through able, like the worst adversity is the final 30 minutes of the portal. Your potential all American quarterback announces. Yeah, I'm out. And he may rebound from that. I'm a big Manny fan, absolutely.
00:10:46
Speaker 1: He's amazing. All right, real quick, I want to ask you about the Georgia Bulldogs. You're right down there in Bulldog country in Atlanta. They have gotten off to a start where they are obliterating everybody, plus 138 in scoring margin. Stockton's numbers are ridiculous. The defense looks salty. But the toughest game they played is this lame Arkansas team. What is this Bulldog team like? How good is this team? And are you starting to think, OK, this could be a team that, you know, wins the SEC and actually advances in the playoff? Or do we need to slow down with that a little bit?
00:11:23
Speaker 2: I think they've been the most efficient and impressive team in America by some stretches. Now, you mentioned the quality of the opponents, and that's sure. If you just look at the totality of that 180 minutes they played, though, I think they have put together the best 180 of anybody ever. in the sport of college football. And I think it's been intentional as well. I think it's a little bit of kind of teaching to the test. I think a lot of coaches have realized, oh, margin of victory. They've been lying to us all along. And so Kirby, who usually is like, I'll beat you at 31 to three and be 100% happy about it. Not this year. This season has been giddy up. for Kirby in that offense. And again, I think it's been intentional on their part. So that is a refocused, rededicated, aggressive Mike Bobo, all of that. You got to love that from Georgia right now. But I think they have been as efficient as anybody. Awesome.
00:12:15
Speaker 1: Chuck, we had a blast talking to you, man. Love it. You're actually a cool Falcons fan. I didn't know if I'd meet one of those in my life, but you're pretty damn cool, man. We appreciate you coming on.
00:12:26
Speaker 2: They've beaten the anger and frustration out of me.
00:12:30
Speaker 1: Hey, trust us.
00:12:31
Speaker 3: We've been there for the last decade.
00:12:33
Speaker 1: Oh, man.
00:12:34
Speaker 2: 1998, you know, 1995, Chuck, I'd have thrown down with you.
00:12:39
Speaker 1: You've lost your fight. Oh, man.
00:12:42
Speaker 3: Now, Chuck, I was 11 years old. That might have been a problem.
00:12:44
Speaker 1: Oh, that could have been an ugly scene for Young Bone. All right, Chuck. Be good, man. Thanks for coming on.
00:12:49
Speaker 2: All right.
00:12:50
Speaker 3: Peace.
