00:00:20
Speaker 1: Yeah, that was just something that the PassPod, you know, Brad and the guys had been working on with Coker, and we've had it up and down the last couple of weeks. It looked like it would be a good matchup in that area. And then Bryce did a great job of extending the play so Jalen can find a little bit more space.
00:00:36
Speaker 2: On that one. Oh, I love it.
00:00:39
Speaker 3: Jalen Coker in the backfield on a huge third down play in our own territory.
00:00:44
Speaker 4: Mismatch.
00:00:45
Speaker 3: Shakes and bakes the linebacker, Zach Bond. 32-yard play. Brad Idzik was in his bag yesterday, man. There's about five or six moments where, you know, I think we notice as fans or maybe Ross Tucker points out, hey, look what Idzik's doing here. It was far from a perfect game with 149 penalty yards, most in franchise history. But we've got to give some love to Brad Idzik. There was some beautiful stuff schematically yesterday, and there was a lot of other stuff to love on. It is time for our weekly 7 o'clock segment, which could be triggering and anger-filled, or it can be a joy. This week, it's who to give love to. It's not who to blame. It's who to give love and credit to for the Panthers' win in Philadelphia. I am now doing the show with a man in an Eagles costume, ladies and gentlemen. You look like the Eagles mascot on the sidelines.
00:01:45
Speaker 2: I was trying to flap my wings like the St. Joe's hawk, but I got about four in there. Now I'm winded. Here's a problem, though. I ordered this off Amazon. This is for the victory dance today. I may have got the women's outfit, Matt, because this thing is awfully snug here. Let's just say my... Let's just say... The bird's nest area is a little bit not good here.
00:02:15
Speaker 3: And if you're wondering why is Bone dressing up as an eagle, this is part of our victory dance later. You're going to have to watch it on social media. You're going to have to see. But I would not mind recreating the Tommy Tremble, Jalen Coker, Rocky celebration on this bird over here.
00:02:31
Speaker 2: During the victory dance. And shout out to Jose from Amazon because I had to order this. Well, I ordered this in the middle of the game, which I know is dangerous, but I felt yesterday. They overcame it. I was pretty confident, but yet for it to be here overnight, Jose at Amazon Mac was 12 stops away. When I woke up this morning, I thought there's no way he's going to get that to the front door by the time I have to leave. I don't know what Jose was doing, man. He got there in about 20 minutes. So I don't know if he was just throwing stuff out the window. Jose got it done, baby. Jose knew that this bird costume. was the most important thing in charlotte all day seth and concord the chicken nuggets are snug is what it's terming right now all right baby so who are we giving credit to you'll see the eagle um uh the eagle will um uh we'll lay we'll try to land during the victory dance and you'll see what happens to them later on today right now let's talk about our panthers getting this win and who we're going to give love to i thought there were other examples two bone of brad idzik and creativity. I love the use of Tommy Tremble in the fullback role. I loved the two calls on the two Tremble touchdowns. The first one, they do the delay where he looks like he's blocking. And next thing you know, he's wheeling out for a touchdown. To me, that was a scheme touchdown. And I also thought his second one was a scheme touchdown. The way they kind of roll Bryce out one way, not a complete throwback, But throwing it back to the middle of the field, and Cooper Dejean was completely.
00:04:00
Speaker 3: Fooled by that play as well. And I think there was a lot of– I shouldn't say a lot, but I think there was like five, six examples. And for people that are like football offensive schematic geniuses, they could probably show you a lot more.
00:04:14
Speaker 4: The use of motion, too.
00:04:16
Speaker 3: You saw it, and Ross Tucker pointed this one out, too, where they motioned– I think it was Mechie wide. The corner then leaves– TMAC in the slot goes outside, and then you've got TMAC on Makuba, the safety.
00:04:30
Speaker 4: Corner route, 18 yards, bang.
00:04:33
Speaker 3: Like, it's just, I just, I think Idzik was cooking, and this wasn't the prettiest game, Bone, but I still think there are some really cool things you can point to in there in this Panthers win, man.
00:04:44
Speaker 2: There was. We also can't forget that the Panthers, the Eagles are banged up, but the Panthers are also missing Mike Jack and Horn. And I don't care what team they're playing against. You take away, Mac, these 75 yards that Devontae Smith had. They held the rest of the wideouts for the Eagles to 115 yards. Excuse me, 145 yards. That's pretty darn good right there. So for a secondary that we're worried about, yes, Devontae Smith didn't really have the biggest impact per se, one touchdown. But the other guys, matchup-wise, Wicks and Cooper and those guys, they could have had some days. But the secondary for the Panthers did a really good job, and that's not even our main guys.
00:05:26
Speaker 3: No, and Will Lee's getting love on the text line, and he deserves it. Listen, I know the PFF, you go look at PFF today, it's going to say seven completions. in 13 attempts they went after will lee over and over again um unlike last week when they went after evans over and over again i thought will lee held up really well especially considering was devante smith their best receiver most of the time bone um he had two pass breakups uh he was he had a couple of penalties but i'm with canalis those penalties are because he's kind of a jc horn I would love to tell a physical guy to rein it in a little bit. You can't tell a non-physical corner to get physical. If it's not in his DNA, it's not his DNA. But you've got a guy like that that's physical, got swag like that. Give me that in a rookie. He's going to be a good one. And dare I say, I could see them. I love Mike Jack, but I could see them try to save money on Mike Jack. and make Horn a starter, or make Lee a starter, man. Because I thought he fought, competed, and was real good, man.
00:06:26
Speaker 2: We've said that with these injuries, there's opportunity for guys to get better. And yes, it's a negative that those guys are out, but can it be a positive that guys like Will Lee have to play bigger roles sooner than we thought. Ultimately, that's how you're a good organization. Will Lee plays well. Next thing you know, you save money there. So I think that's something to monitor for sure.
00:06:47
Speaker 4: I think you also.
00:06:49
Speaker 3: The blanket and the seatbelt's a great combo. And listen, Evans gave up only three completions. Evans, it was, you know, he was not exposed. Again, it wasn't, it was far from the Detroit game. Like, you know, we'll see what happens to Evans against Green Bay because they were going off, love downfield to.
00:07:04
Speaker 4: Those wideouts yesterday again, last night again.
00:07:07
Speaker 3: Against Dallas. But for last night, Evans hung in there pretty well. I also think the blitzes, Averro blitzing 57% of the time, Bone, I think was a key in this game. I think it was the perfect game plan. And I would wonder, was that the game plan for Hertz? Or was that game plan changed at the end of the week? Because that was the perfect way to play it against a rookie quarterback, a young quarterback that's a statue. He wasn't going anywhere. You could tee the hell off on him. He was not escaping you. And I thought the blitzing of the linebackers, I think PFF's initial numbers had it 16 times each for Okereke and Lloyd. And it resulted, Bone... And all three of our sacks came on blitzes. Okereke and Lloyd each had one. And I think Okereke twice hit the arm of McKee as he was throwing, forcing an incompletion. So I do think they helped their corners with the use of the blitzes. And these linebackers, KB brought it up during the pregame show yesterday, and they went out there and played like that. Our linebackers, I mean, Dan Morgan in one offseason has completely turned it from a weakness to a strength.
00:08:13
Speaker 2: Oh, 100%. What about a tip of the hat, Mac, as I'm clapping with my... Eagle wings? My eagle wings. You can hear me clapping with my wings.
00:08:23
Speaker 3: And we will raise you up on eagle's wings. Anybody else a Catholic that spent a lot of time in church?
00:08:29
Speaker 4: Anybody know a little eagle's wings?
00:08:31
Speaker 2: Chuba goes for 120 in a touchdown, 4.3 yards per carry. But I think all those yards were impactful because of the way that he ran and how he set the tone. So... I think stats are great, but I thought Chuba's physical presence, most like Tremble, was a huge difference in that game yesterday.
00:08:49
Speaker 4: Oh, my God.
00:08:50
Speaker 3: We punked them in the trenches, as we should. Their offensive line is a skeleton crew. And look what we did to the run game again. 36 yards rushing. Now, the problem is, Bone, we're still only down to like 27th in run defense because the first game giving up 291. We're going to be crawling out of that hole all year. But, Bone, we gave up less than 50 yards rushing the last two weeks.
00:09:12
Speaker 4: It's just weird. We're stuffing it again.
00:09:13
Speaker 3: I understand Phillies down their fourth string back and their O-line stinks, but that's what you should do. The defense dominated them, and that's what you should freaking do. I personally believe their first touchdown dry bone was aided by some garbage from the refs and the fact that Canales did not get a challenge in bone on that non-catch. I think that also was a big play on that drive. They went so fast to the line of scrimmage. Sometimes teams lollygag. I think they just thought they had more time. The Eagles went so fast on that. I mean, they were sprinting to the line.
00:09:46
Speaker 2: They did, and it.
00:09:46
Speaker 3: Wasn't on our sideline. I think it was on our sideline because if you see, Pat Jones knew it was not a catch. He was standing there watching it, and he's trying to say no catch, but it wasn't our sideline, so I'm guessing it's harder for him to convey that to the coaches that quick on the other side, Lee Hunter getting some love from Seth and Concord. That pressure he had where he just beat the... I mean, just tossed, went through the offensive lineman and hit the quarterback was tremendous. It was a team effort on defense, although we do have Ron the Plumber talking about the waste of money Jalen Phillips is. Keep in mind, Jalen Phillips had to leave the game for a while because of the hamstring injury he was questionable with. Came back in, was involved on the play, the sack with Merrig. But he is getting hated on playing injured by Rondo. That's Rondo Plummer's takeaway today, Bone, is Jalen Phillips is paid.
00:10:36
Speaker 2: Too much money. What a kill. You must be fun at parties, Rondo. Rondo Plummer's never got out of work one day in his life. That crack's been exposed for decades.
00:10:46
Speaker 3: Ron, at a party, you must be a killjoy. Everybody's talking about good stuff and you bring up something negative. Although I will say you would come in handy if someone clogs a toilet at a party. You would definitely come in handy there. By the way, Ron, stick around.
00:10:57
Speaker 2: Finney needs your number. Oh, man.
00:11:02
Speaker 3: What do you think, man? Who are you giving the love to for the Panthers win? Tremble. We raved about in hour one some of the blocking he and Evans did out front of Chuba. It's that physicality in the running game. They have to figure out a way to run in the first half. Eight carries for 24 yards thrown at halftime. But Chuba ends up with 96 yards in the second half.
00:11:27
Speaker 4: This is the trend. They've got to find a way to.
00:11:31
Speaker 3: Get the running game going a little bit sooner. Bryce Young, it's the craziest thing. Bryce threw for 281. Two touchdowns. The biggest number is no picks. He continues to protect this football so well. He made a bunch, Boney, of really nice throws to T-Mac and Coker over the middle of the field or on the sidelines. He would have been over. 300, but he lost a big one to Evans on what looked like it was a screen, but Bryce saw that, oh, shoot, they're worried about the screen that we're setting up, and Evans is downfield. That would have put him over. 300, but that came back on a Robert Hunt– ineligible man downfield i don't understand why two things i didn't understand yesterday why robert hunt keeps getting these penalties it's like he just learned the rule last week what's going on here and the other thing is i did not understand we were getting so many good returns even david morse trot down the sideline bone hn had a great had multiple great returns we could barely do any of them without any penalties But again, I guess there's something to be said, Bone. For 149 yards on 13 penalties, you win by 11 on the road. There's something to be said for that. Mack, they have three turnovers this year. Bryce has the two INTs.
00:12:44
Speaker 2: There are no... Knock on some... some wood over there but uh there's not been a running back fumble at all not even not even when they got back and there's been four fumbles by wideouts they've only lost one of them that is uh it's not yeah i was thinking yesterday it's not just bryce's turnovers they're not they're protecting the.
00:13:04
Speaker 3: Ball overall this year they are man and even the bryce interceptions we talked about it last week yeah one of them is at the end of was at the end of chic was a chicago first half Yes, it was. Where he's just like, let me see if we can get in field goal range.
00:13:15
Speaker 4: I'm going to chuck it. If not, there's only seconds left.
00:13:18
Speaker 3: And Cleveland at the end. And Cleveland is the one who got his arm hit and the ball flew up in the air. So those aren't even really like legit, terrible, like mistakenly interceptions.
00:13:28
Speaker 2: We have to be near the top of the lead for fewest turnovers, right? I would guess.
00:13:32
Speaker 3: Yes, definitely. I will look that up, Bonesarelli. I can't really type right now with my wings on. Because eagle's wings don't type well? We have a big meeting today. We're going to meet sponsors and stuff and hang out for a while. Are you going to wear that outfit?
00:13:45
Speaker 2: Remember I wore my pilgrim outfit for one of those things and DJ Stout said, why are you dressed like a pilgrim today? I think I should wear this. Let's see here.
00:13:53
Speaker 3: Somebody is saying what you were saying, Bone, about Chuba, about him getting better as the game goes on. You guys are both right about it. I do think they have to find a way to balance the offense out more in the first half, but there is a thing where they do like kind of riding him home.
00:14:12
Speaker 4: For lack of a better phrase, in the second half of his game.
00:14:15
Speaker 2: He's our Uber. Chuba Uber Hubbard.
00:14:19
Speaker 4: Uber Hubbard. Chuba Hubbard.
00:14:21
Speaker 5: It almost feels like, Mac, in a league where you run to set up the pass, it feels like the Panthers pass to set up their run game.
00:14:29
Speaker 4: Because I was frustrated, too, in the first half, because whenever we ran it, I felt like we were getting good push.
00:14:34
Speaker 5: Where we get a bad penalty that would negate a good run. But they had a drive 743 off the clock, longest drive of the season.
00:14:43
Speaker 4: Their ability to wear.
00:14:45
Speaker 5: Down opponents, I think, is something that's a part of their identity and the type of team that they want to be. You want to be able to run the ball in the first half, obviously. But if that's going to be a part of their DNA, home and on the road, They're.
00:15:01
Speaker 4: Going to be a tough team to beat moving forward.
00:15:03
Speaker 3: The combination of the deep passing game, Bone, the aggressive passing game, the RPO game, the boot game, and the run.
00:15:11
Speaker 4: They've got different ways to beat you as an offense.
00:15:13
Speaker 2: How about this stat that I just looked up here? In the first half of games this year, Chuba's at 2.9 yards per carry and a touchdown. The second half of games... 6.1 yards per carry, three touchdowns.
00:15:26
Speaker 4: There it is right there.
00:15:28
Speaker 2: He's got 105 in the first half, 321 in the second half.
00:15:32
Speaker 4: That's it right there. They've got to find a way to balance it.
00:15:34
Speaker 3: But to Fitty's point, you run the ball on teams in the second half, wear them down. There's something to be said for that. They are seventh bone in turnovers. This thing actually has them with a fourth turnover somewhere. Do we have a special teams? Yeah, that could be it.
00:15:47
Speaker 2: Yeah, maybe.
00:15:48
Speaker 4: We had a special.
00:15:49
Speaker 2: We had a fumble against the Lions, was it not?
00:15:51
Speaker 4: Special teams?
00:15:52
Speaker 2: I think so. Punt touch. The fumble punt, right?
00:15:56
Speaker 4: I think it was against the Lions.
00:15:57
Speaker 2: First game of the year. Didn't we have a fumble punt? Or Bears.
00:16:00
Speaker 4: Was it Bears? Jimmy Horn, right? Jimmy Horn, yeah.
00:16:03
Speaker 2: That's right. Jimmy Horn left the punt, and that was the last time we saw him. That's true. They said, you're going to end up in Cleveland, son. That's how serious they take turnovers. Jimmy Horn had one, and he's gone. So that's it.
00:16:15
Speaker 3: Four and five games. That's pretty damn solid. We are getting some of these. A lot of y'all are just naming players. Okereke's getting a lot. Will Lee's getting a lot. Chuba, Tremble. We're getting a— I don't want to say a lot.
00:16:29
Speaker 4: I don't want to overdo it.
00:16:31
Speaker 3: I saw a few of the, we really excited about that win? We're going to have to deal with that energy today, Boney. Like, yes, we are, sir.
00:16:41
Speaker 4: How are you not? You can't have it both ways.
00:16:43
Speaker 3: You can't be the fan base that is paranoid going into a game against a backup quarterback. And then when you win the game by 11, despite 149 yards of penalties, then pull the card where it's like, ah, that's not enough style points for me.
00:16:56
Speaker 4: You can't play both those games.
00:16:58
Speaker 5: You only get 17 of these things. You're not guaranteed a win every single time. If nothing else, look at who you beat. You beat the Eagles. You beat Nick Sirianni. I don't give a damn that they're compromised, Mac.
00:17:14
Speaker 4: Nor should you.
00:17:15
Speaker 3: If you're not excited, you look like a damn fool today, right? Yeah, you look almost as foolish as Bone does in his costume. Exactly. Hopefully I'm dressed like a pirate next week.
00:17:24
Speaker 5: These are people that just wanted to see the team lose so they could flood our text line, flood our phone calls, and bitch and complain.
00:17:33
Speaker 2: Let's do this. Get some fresh air.
00:17:34
Speaker 4: Let's do this. Don't worry.
00:17:36
Speaker 3: We've got plenty of time to deal with that whole style points thing and all that. Let's give love to Taylor Moten. A lot of people saying that on the text line. Timo, real solid game from him. Not perfect, but real freaking solid. My God, it was great to have him back out there. I'm so happy for him personally that he's back out there.
00:17:54
Speaker 2: We're going to talk to Jim Zoki coming up next. Ben, your writing on the text line wants you to send us out with your version of Cry Eagles Cry.
00:18:04
Speaker 3: Oh, me?
00:18:05
Speaker 2: Yeah.
00:18:05
Speaker 3: Cry Eagles cry on the way to a defeat.
00:18:11
Speaker 2: Cry Eagles fly. Oh, I said fly. Cry Rex Ryan likes feet.
00:18:19
Speaker 4: I don't really know what.
00:18:20
Speaker 3: That had to do with anything. It's the only thing I can think of to rhyme with defeat. Yeah, let's just go to break real quick.
00:18:25
Speaker 2: Sorry about that. Oh, man, rock and roll it.
00:18:48
Speaker 3: Panther, Victory Monday, ladies and gentlemen. Mack and Bone Show, we having a good old time today. Panthers to three and two, over 500. Bebop said, when was the last time we were over? We got Jim Zoki here, so I'm going to fact check with Zoki and the Panther Radio Network. He says, man, it must be a long time since we've been over 500. Weren't we over 500 last.
00:19:11
Speaker 4: Year at 4-3? I think so. We can check it out.
00:19:16
Speaker 5: They were 1-3, then they won 3 straight to get to 4-3. That's then when the win one, lose one.
00:19:22
Speaker 2: Byron Goodman said, is this the biggest win of the Bryce era? And I had to point out the Rams and Packers games last year. This is a... This is against a name-brand team, but we've also got to keep in mind of who they are. They had the bigger wins last year. Definitely.
00:19:39
Speaker 3: And I believe so fully there are big wins coming this year from this team. I like the way they're coming together. It wasn't perfect, obviously, 149 yards of penalties. but I like is that that's a game I ask in the past the Panthers could probably find a way to mess that up in the past you know what I mean they ended up taking care of business.
00:19:58
Speaker 6: No and you think of like so what were the 149 yards 149 13 13 Philadelphia by the way had 11 for 84 they helped us a little bit too the referees were like the constant show and I think Dave Kanellis was right like the penalties were pretty much well earned you can't even argue them.
00:20:13
Speaker 2: But some of them had to be like, really?
00:20:16
Speaker 6: They could not spot the ball. You would see guys fall down, and they'd be like two yards off. They'd look at either their left eye or their right eye when they're marking the ball down on the field. But the thing is, like, beyond those, I was going to say beyond the 149 penalty yards, how much actual, like, yardage was lost, like, on the three returns, the punt and kick returns? Like, the actual yardage on top of, like, the penalty yardage, like, yeah, how much field position did you actually lose?
00:20:39
Speaker 2: I'd like to know the number because that was a huge setback.
00:20:41
Speaker 4: I was looking at the, what the hell they call that thing, Bone, you print out? The game, what? Why is it so hard?
00:20:46
Speaker 2: The stats? The box score. Okay, but they call it something else. The game book.
00:20:49
Speaker 4: Game book, there you go.
00:20:50
Speaker 2: So anyway. The football thing.
00:20:52
Speaker 4: I'm looking at the game book.
00:20:53
Speaker 3: They won starting field position by 10 yards. Our 31, theirs was their 21. Imagine what it could have been with those returns.
00:21:00
Speaker 2: No doubt.
00:21:01
Speaker 4: Seriously, we won it by 20 yards.
00:21:02
Speaker 6: That bodes well, too, because think how that was also a problem earlier on. And having A-Chan back, he looked very comfortable back there.
00:21:08
Speaker 2: Definitely. And obviously, I mean.
00:21:10
Speaker 6: To me, I think you've got a couple guys. David Moore had a nice return, another one that was called back by a penalty. So it would be nice to have had that field position. I think the outcome would have been decided earlier and easier had you had those things happen. But it's nice that you can win by 11 and still overcome all those kind of obstacles out there.
00:21:26
Speaker 2: Absolutely. You guys are correct. It was a year ago, 4-3 over. 500, October of 2025. So you were exactly spot on there. From your game notes. How– How important is it for a team trying to still establish their winning culture, their identity, to have games like yesterday when there is a lot going against you? To win when you're not at your best is actually a sign of really good things to come, right? They didn't do it against Cleveland. They did it yesterday. No, that was, yeah, that was one of those. Cleveland's weird. They won again yesterday. I don't even know how they're winning games. It doesn't seem like a terrible loss right now.
00:22:04
Speaker 6: No, because, and I say that about Cleveland, their defense is really good, and they did a great job, if you remember, like with Denzel Ward shutting down T-Mac.
00:22:10
Speaker 3: And Coker went out. I think that was a big factor. We didn't have him.
00:22:14
Speaker 2: Right. Everyone focuses on Deshaun Watts. That's a good defense.
00:22:17
Speaker 6: I think with Philadelphia, that was a really good defense, too, and that's why it made it more difficult to win yesterday. But you can see, even with the Panthers winning, you still have the difficulty, although Will Lee showed strides yesterday, if you don't have J.C. Horn and Mike Jack replacements to that level.
00:22:32
Speaker 2: And so it was better.
00:22:33
Speaker 6: Obviously, we didn't call Evan's name as much yesterday in the game as we did the previous one with the win with Detroit the week before.
00:22:40
Speaker 2: Two weeks before.
00:22:41
Speaker 6: But I think, you know, again, that's still like you can see that's like the thing, like how can we get through these next whatever five games, whatever the number might be, with not having the same level right there.
00:22:51
Speaker 2: And Will Lee is growing up quickly. I think he did some good things.
00:22:53
Speaker 6: The two early penalties obviously hurt, but maybe better to get those penalties and give up a long touchdown or something like that. So I do like the fact that we're seeing some growth there, but it's all happening on the field while you're still trying to win games.
00:23:05
Speaker 3: What did you think about Chuba in the second half? And Tommy Tremble. I mean, these are two guys. First of all, they're like best buds by all accounts.
00:23:14
Speaker 2: These are Matt Rule era players.
00:23:15
Speaker 3: They are.
00:23:16
Speaker 2: They are, man.
00:23:18
Speaker 3: Matt Rule players actually sticking around for the turnover.
00:23:22
Speaker 2: Think about what these guys have seen and won't talk about it.
00:23:25
Speaker 4: And they've lived to tell about it and play well in Philly.
00:23:27
Speaker 2: They both probably feel like they're like 58 years old. I remember back when Matt Rule was here. They've been here for a while, and I feel like they're both kind of underrated. Well, and look at what Chuba did yesterday.
00:23:37
Speaker 6: He basically was the entire rushing attack because you had Bryce had to run it three times, but it was only six yards. A-Chan only ran it once for a negative carry. And then we had Mitchell Evans, you know, jump in with the quarterback sneak, if you will.
00:23:48
Speaker 4: Mitchell Palooza back.
00:23:49
Speaker 6: It was entirely on Chuba to run the ball yesterday, 28 times, 120 yards. And then Trumbull just is like, I've always liked the fact that when you have a tight end that you don't know what his role is going to be on a given play. Like Darren Waller is a terrific player. But when Trumbull's out there and Mitchell Evans to a larger degree, too, is he a blocker? Is he a pass receiver? I think that's what's great about that when they do the 13 personnel where it makes it so difficult to judge for a defense what's going to happen out there because you kind of, you try to, now with Coker healthy, you've got T-Mac, you've got Coker, times where Waller's out there with those other tight ends. Who are you going to cover? And it's going to give Tommy a lot more opportunities. I'm glad to see him get an advantage of that. And he is a good catcher. I mean, he does a good job, I think, in the receiving end. He doesn't really drop many, I don't think, so I think He's a nice weapon to have because we focus so much on the big plays of T-Mac and Coker and so forth. You need those guys to pick up first downs or get in the red zone like that and get a touchdown or two.
00:24:43
Speaker 2: What did you think of the job that Will Lee did yesterday? And how big is that to have a guy play well without the other guys in there? So it's almost like a blessing in disguise that when Horn and Mike Jack come back, all of a sudden you've got another guy playing at a high level. No doubt.
00:24:57
Speaker 6: And again, like some early penalties, but then those went away as the game went on. And, you know, we all know certain players are good. Devontae Smith's a good player. When you see him in person and watch him run routes, you go, that guy's really good.
00:25:08
Speaker 2: I mean, he is every bit as good as A.J.
00:25:10
Speaker 6: Brown was when he was there, is Devontae Smith. So that's a tough assignment that was mostly going to Willie Lee yesterday.
00:25:16
Speaker 2: And he held it in there, I think.
00:25:17
Speaker 6: And you have to be aggressive, and you're going to probably get away with a little hand fighting and things like that.
00:25:22
Speaker 2: And it kind of goes back and forth. So you take your penalties.
00:25:26
Speaker 6: But better that than just playing loose and giving big buffer and letting him have all this room to catch the ball out there. I like that he was aggressive in his approach the way he defended him.
00:25:33
Speaker 3: I'll tell you who else was aggressive is Juro Avera with the blitzes. PFF's in-game kind of stuff. We'll see what their final numbers are. They had it at 57% blitz rate. Okereke and Lloyd, they started going after the quarterback early and often. Okereke on the first play gets a sack. Those guys are really good, and I think that helped our corners on the back end. What did you think about that aspect of things?
00:25:59
Speaker 2: I love it.
00:25:59
Speaker 6: You think of that first sack, it was him and Nick Scott both coming. That's how aggressive it was. They sent through to the same slot, and then, of course, Okereke could have had an interception on the second play of the game, which Really would have set the tone early on with that.
00:26:10
Speaker 2: But I love that.
00:26:11
Speaker 6: I think that's what, you know, Joe's always wanted to do with this defense. But when you don't have the personnel, you can't risk giving up the big plays on the back half of the defense there. So, again, especially when they do get J.C. Horn and you get Mike Jack back, you can be even more aggressive, have even more confidence about your success rate in doing that. But that's always been his style. That's what he's always wanted to do there. And how cool is it, too, that we have, you know, Rod and Devin Lloyd, well-known in the offseason, but get Bobby Okereke off the couch at home at the last minute to get a player of that caliber to pair with Devin Lloyd on the inside just makes that whole defense feel different.
00:26:45
Speaker 2: And Dodson as a backup ain't chopped liver either.
00:26:47
Speaker 3: At 120-plus tackles last year, they got him, too, in reserve. That is linebacker room, home makeover edition, Bob. They completely redid that.
00:26:59
Speaker 4: In a flash.
00:27:00
Speaker 2: So any reason why Rob Hunt keeps wandering downfield, he's like my great-uncle Augie at Thanksgiving back in the day when he'd wander outside and we'd have to get him back inside the house. I think the bigger issue is he was raising his right hand as if he was open, like, I'm open.
00:27:13
Speaker 6: And then he realized that's not his role in the offense.
00:27:15
Speaker 2: He's not allowed to do that. So it is.
00:27:17
Speaker 6: He's had a couple this year in different situations. That's not the first time, even those two in this game.
00:27:21
Speaker 2: So it's interesting.
00:27:21
Speaker 4: He had one against Detroit, too.
00:27:23
Speaker 2: Yeah. We got a runner. We got a runner.
00:27:25
Speaker 6: But he's walking off. But in that mode, though, how great. And just hearing the joy in his voice as we talked to him in the postgame was Taylor Moten having him back. I mean, a guy that didn't know, first of all, what his health situation was going to be, period, let alone football situation, just like in life, what his health situation was going to be back. And then defensively to get Turk Wharton back for the first time as well. Turk had a play you probably saw work. He had, like, two offensive linemen on him, and he literally shoved them off to the side, to the right, and then went to the left to make the stop.
00:27:53
Speaker 4: Yeah, it was a good play.
00:27:53
Speaker 6: These guys matter, and they're like, you know, these are veteran guys that are, again, just going to help you be better on those interior positions and just free up other guys, like Okereke, like Devin Lloyd, to make big plays on defense. And then offensively, having stability there, you know, Monroe Freeling not healthy right now, but you can see, again, like Willie, he's learning and growing and making mistakes, and you're kind of living with those. I was shocked at Morton's ability to come out there with, I would have to say, you know, not playing football all this time. He didn't have training camp to come in and be able to play the amount of football that he played.
00:28:25
Speaker 2: He did. And he was real solid too.
00:28:26
Speaker 3: Like, I mean, I think PFF had him like with two pressures.
00:28:30
Speaker 4: I didn't really notice them.
00:28:32
Speaker 3: It was, you know, you would, you would have just thought it was a regular Taylor Moten football game.
00:28:36
Speaker 2: It's crazy.
00:28:37
Speaker 6: That's a, that's a huge relief to get him back out there. So, And then when Monroe is healthy, I'll obviously give you some depth as maybe a swing tackle, something like that. So I think, you know, things, hopefully, I feel like, you know, I know Philadelphia is banged up and they've got probably the worst situation in the league as far as injuries go. But people forget from day one of training camp, that was the Panthers. And for them to be 3-2 in overcoming the number of injuries they've had is terrific.
00:28:58
Speaker 3: Yeah, and so close to 4-1, too. That Browns game, it came down to a penalty another day. We lead the NFL in penalties if we don't commit that one where we hit Watson up high.
00:29:11
Speaker 6: Side note, I'm watching last night. I'm watching the Cowboys-Packers game.
00:29:15
Speaker 2: It was both sides.
00:29:17
Speaker 6: Can we dial down what the rule is for— you know, hitting the quarterback. I just feel like it's just like, it's not football. It's just so much. And going back to the Deshaun Watson play that you're referring to, I just see it so much where it just takes so much. I mean, if it's not something that's actually hurting the quarterback, if you're tapping someone's helmet, like you're just touching the quarterback too late, if you're not landing, I get the whole landing of the entire body on there or whatever. on top of the quarterback and the weight. But there are so many plays where you're just going, it's so ticky-tacky. They've got to somehow dial it back to where football still looks like football.
00:29:47
Speaker 4: And Bryce gets these, too, Bob. Bryce had one yesterday, too.
00:29:50
Speaker 3: The tap to the face mask or the tap to the side of the helmet.
00:29:54
Speaker 2: There should be a certain amount of aggression that should be a part of that. It shouldn't be a tickle. I know I'm putting— We have 15 yards for tickling. It's like the kids in the backseat of the car. He's touching me. Stop.
00:30:06
Speaker 4: It's the new tickle me QB doll. You know what I mean? It's crazy.
00:30:10
Speaker 2: It should be.
00:30:11
Speaker 3: Could you put a judgment call in there where it's forcible contact to the head?
00:30:15
Speaker 2: Then you call it, but in your, you know what I mean?
00:30:17
Speaker 3: I know we're giving them more responsibility, but it seems like some of these little grazing should not be.
00:30:22
Speaker 2: It's gone too far. Deshaun Watson was a great example of that. You know the.
00:30:24
Speaker 3: Penalty I hated yesterday? First of all, Will Lee, I thought, granted, he tried to pants a man on live TV.
00:30:30
Speaker 2: But I thought that's defensive hold, right?
00:30:32
Speaker 4: The ball wasn't thrown yet.
00:30:33
Speaker 2: Isn't that defensive hold? That was about as egregious of a hold as you could have, yes. But not P.I., though. But the one that killed me was. That was public embarrassment. Public pantsing.
00:30:45
Speaker 4: Illegal use of cheeks.
00:30:47
Speaker 2: No, the Tommy Tremble.
00:30:49
Speaker 3: Just a really quick point at Cooper DeGene after he scores a touchdown, and that's a penalty. These are grown men. Are there little feelings getting heard out there? He pointed at him for one second. And he said it was for the previous suplex that happened. He did, and that's why he did it. He said, I shouldn't do it. To be taunting is like you're standing over a player. It's got to be more of a deal.
00:31:09
Speaker 2: Than that. At least hit him with the football or something after you score, like something more. I get it.
00:31:14
Speaker 4: I get it with the football. I'm like, come on, man. Do we need to do that?
00:31:17
Speaker 3: Like in peewee football, I get it if you want to tell a kid, hey, don't point to him like that.
00:31:21
Speaker 2: These are grown dudes.
00:31:22
Speaker 3: Are we really ruining the world if Tommy Tremble for a second points.
00:31:26
Speaker 2: To Cooper DeGene? Children are watching. How do you explain that? How do you explain to someone young that this guy here pointed at somebody?
00:31:32
Speaker 4: Daddy Raj has to raise everybody's.
00:31:34
Speaker 2: Kids, apparently. It is.
00:31:38
Speaker 6: It's like there's an energy that goes away, like a home or away in a stadium where there's a big play made and here come the penalty flags. And I get they have to call the way the rules are written, but. I think it's time to kind of look back at putting it somewhere between where it is and where it used to be with some of these rules.
00:31:52
Speaker 2: I'm watching the play right now where Idzik had Coker in the backfield, one-on-one with the linebacker. Beautiful, dude. And the time of that play, too, 13-7. You're backed up third and eight, and you pull that one out there. Beautiful. Man, oh, man.
00:32:03
Speaker 3: And watch Bryce move to give him more time to put that little shake on Zach Bond. Bryce buys a little bit of time, then hits him.
00:32:10
Speaker 2: It was beautiful.
00:32:11
Speaker 4: Idzik was in his bag. I talked about it earlier this hour. There's about five, six plays where I'm like, Both touchdowns to Tremble felt schemey.
00:32:17
Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
00:32:18
Speaker 6: He's scaring me because I feel like, can we lock him up to the longest offensive coordinator contract? Because he's right in that mode of what teams are looking for. These young, aggressive play callers. You see the improvement. We're talking about Bryce Young being an MVP. Obviously, that's going to get attention everywhere. So good for him, whatever ends up happening with him. He deserves it, but he's right in that mode of what today's NFL teams are looking for as far as that next Ben Johnson, guys like that.
00:32:45
Speaker 4: I'm kind of hoping we can squeeze an extra year out of.
00:32:49
Speaker 2: Him. I'd like to get kind of two out of him if possible.
00:32:52
Speaker 3: I know I'm assuming that his offense keeps bowling for the next couple of years, but I also do want to remind everybody, when you're actually good, this is what happens.
00:33:00
Speaker 4: I know it's been so long for us. But when you're actually good, they want your coaches.
00:33:04
Speaker 3: Right.
00:33:04
Speaker 4: You know what I mean? It's a weird thing.
00:33:06
Speaker 2: It's a great compliment. It's a great compliment.
00:33:08
Speaker 5: It is.
00:33:08
Speaker 6: And obviously with Canales, I mean, they're pretty much in lockstep. So whatever the offense is, it's going to still have that same kind of feel to it, whatever it is.
00:33:15
Speaker 3: I think they might promote from within. Like a, what's my man's name? Hariger's one, the QB coach. What's my other man's name? The one they retained by giving him a promotion?
00:33:24
Speaker 2: Blutarski?
00:33:25
Speaker 4: Not Blutarski.
00:33:26
Speaker 2: What the hell? I don't think there's a guy named Blutarski. That was from Animal House, I believe. It definitely was. Mike Bercovici is his name. ECU Memphis Thursday.
00:33:35
Speaker 3: Night, right?
00:33:36
Speaker 2: Yes.
00:33:37
Speaker 6: This conference, real quick, is ECU devastating loss. They had the lead until they didn't in the last minute. They lose in overtime on the road at UAB. Memphis loses by two touchdowns to Tulane. And the Charlotte 49ers, as you know, in that same field where the Panthers won. win over Temple, get their first win of the year. Memphis and Charlotte were the top and bottom, and both did the exact opposite. So a lot of parity within the American Conference.
00:33:59
Speaker 2: We'll talk to you next week, man. Appreciate it. When we come back, it's an Ask the Audience question, courtesy of QC Mechanical, your local HVAC experts. It was probably Bryce's worst stat day, but the numbers still look good, and he continues to set records. What do we think of Bryce on this Panther Monday? Sports Radio, 92.7 WFNZ.
00:34:22
Speaker 6: Guitar solo.
00:34:47
Speaker 7: Look, I've been a Bryce Young critic in the past. I'm not going to hide from that. But he's making people like me eat my words. And I think he's playing really good football right now.
00:34:57
Speaker 4: He's confident.
00:34:58
Speaker 7: He's making the throws when he needs to.
00:35:00
Speaker 2: He hits the open guy.
00:35:01
Speaker 7: He goes through his progressions. And Bryce, sure he had a couple passes, you know, knocked down at the line of scrimmage today. But that's going to happen when you have a 5'11 quarterback. The bottom line is he's playing really good football. And I'm going to give him all the credit. And dare I say it, he's in the MVP.
00:35:19
Speaker 2: Yes! I'm sorry.
00:35:20
Speaker 4: I'm sorry. You just scared the whole world on that one.
00:35:24
Speaker 2: Good, good, because you literally took the words right off of my paper. Bryce Young needs to be in the MVP conversation.
00:35:34
Speaker 4: There you go. Got to be honest, I'm not sure who that CBS employee is there at the end.
00:35:38
Speaker 2: Was that Justin Simmons? He's on there quite a bit. Former DB. I believe it might be.
00:35:43
Speaker 4: Maybe it's him.
00:35:44
Speaker 3: But your first guy there was Pete Prisco, one of the most annoying curmudgeons when it came to Bryce Young for the first three years of his career. And he says, I'm eating my words and Bryce is feeding them to me.
00:35:58
Speaker 4: And he's an MVP candidate. And that's beautiful.
00:36:01
Speaker 3: And maybe one day some of y'all knuckleheads on the text line can follow his lead. Maybe it can happen for you, too. But we got to talk about Bryce's game. And I think a lot of y'all are summing it up well. Bryce goes out there, a lot of incompletions, right?
00:36:16
Speaker 2: 20 of 39.
00:36:16
Speaker 3: A lot of them were throwaways again where he didn't have anything. And I thought, unlike the Cleveland game, Bone, where he threw the ball away a lot and had a lot of incompletions because of the pressure. This one I didn't feel like was pressure as much. I feel like they were doing a good job cuffering downfield a lot where Bryce just didn't have anything. And then just kind of either hits the escape hatch and throws it away or just kind of, and they credited him on PFF with six throwaways. I bet it's even more like, I don't think, I think there's some where Bryce puts it like, unlike his grounding, puts it in the area and it almost makes it look like he missed the throw. but he knows it's covered and he's just not going to make a mistake. It goes back to the fact that he only has two turnovers this season. But he ended up with two touchdowns, bone to Tommy Tremble, ended up with 281 yards. There were still a fair amount of really good throws. I think he hit five in the intermediate and two deep where he was hitting Coker or TMAC over the middle or on the sidelines. I think the texters that are sending a text in, and there's a bunch of you that are saying, if this is now Bryce's quote-unquote bad game, that is a major sign. I think Barron said it, a major sign of progression for Bryce.
00:37:32
Speaker 2: First of all, it's a great thing that a— The only man in America, Mac, that is actually a foot shorter than Bryce Young, give him credit there. That's from the 4'9, Pete Briscoe. As a texter, Icy Veins, points out, what a great sign it is for what the ceiling is now for Bryce when 281 and a couple touchdowns and no turnovers, it's kind of, yeah, he was all right. It was an all right performance by Bryce. Not his best.
00:37:58
Speaker 6: 100%.
00:37:58
Speaker 2: That shows you how much he's raised in the bar. If he had that in the past, we'd say, oh my God, what an unbelievable performance by Bryce. Now those numbers are kind of like, yeah, he was all right. He had moments. That's a good sign for how good he's been other games. Y'all are so right on that. It's a great way of saying it.
00:38:13
Speaker 3: And I looked at like, we finished up the segment with Zoki and it occurred to me, We didn't ask him about Bryce. He threw for 281, two touchdowns, no picks. And it's just, I think that's the point. It's like, Hey, that was, you did a bunch of good stuff. You struggled a bit at times. Philly's defense, give them a little bit of credit, but you know what? Like if that's your worst game out of the five, you had a 91 quarterback rating. It's like, dude, we.
00:38:36
Speaker 4: Going to be fine.
00:38:37
Speaker 3: Um, and I love these still, you got the ball to T Mac and Coker each six times. I think T Mac had 86 Coker had 97. It's so, it's so good to have both those guys together. Um, I don't think it was his most accurate day downfield either. I think he was two or five on the deep balls, but again, man, um, this dude is doing things. No quarterback has done here. Uh, some of the numbers bone, um, Panther records, um, No one's ever thrown 11 touchdown passes in the first five games as a Panther. No one has thrown for even 225 and a touchdown in every game for the first five games as a Panther. Bryce has thrown for 280 or more in every game and a touchdown through five games. You have to go back to the 2013 season when Peyton Manning and Drew Brees did it to find someone who has done that.
00:39:26
Speaker 2: That's insane. Oh, those scrubs. Oh, we got to mention Bryce with those guys?
00:39:31
Speaker 4: That's embarrassing. That's insane, man, when you think about it.
00:39:35
Speaker 2: And we've mentioned he's got two turnovers and they both, one was... and up for grabs ball when one was the one against Cleveland. And those silly fumbles, Matt, that he often had his first few years when he would just drop the ball or he'd get pressured and the ball would magically come out of his hands somehow. Those seem like, for the most part, that those aren't happening either right now. No, he's protecting the ball in so many different ways. He's so comfortable and alert of all that's around him. He's not looking back for the rush anymore. He's looking downfield to make plays. I think before he was looking around him. He just feels it. And Ross Tucker said it, the subtle, what did Ross call him, nifty? The subtle movement in the pocket. You saw it on the Coker one. Let me buy myself a little bit of time here.
00:40:16
Speaker 5: Boom.
00:40:16
Speaker 4: I'm releasing it. Um, this subtle movement.
00:40:19
Speaker 2: Okay.
00:40:19
Speaker 4: I feel pressure here. Let me slide in.
00:40:21
Speaker 3: And you see that even in a game where it's like, man, that wasn't, you know, that wasn't his best performance this year may have been his worst. It's just, he's growing. He's evolving. The talent around him has gotten better. Brett Idzik is making everybody better. I mean, man, it's fun to watch.
00:40:38
Speaker 4: It really is.
00:40:39
Speaker 3: And again, that was one where the offense kept killing themselves. Seven of our 13 penalties, Bone, were offensive. And I would also throw the three return penalties in to hurting the offense. So there were 10 penalties, Bone, that hurt the offense's cause.
00:40:54
Speaker 4: There would have been more points on the board.
00:40:56
Speaker 3: A lot of people are pointing out, They could have put up 32 if they wanted to. They're down there at the two-yard line, and they do the right thing, the classy thing, and kneel it out. There could have been more points there. So, man, it feels so good. And I have asked Bob. Cut to the chase. I've told Bebop a simple... Because he's on there blabbing about when's the Bryce statue reveal.
00:41:20
Speaker 2: I was going to ban him from Mentions Mac until he just says Bryce is the guy. That's all he's got to say. Here's what I asked for. He's on there doing his comedy routine. When's the statue reveal?
00:41:29
Speaker 3: Uh, he's going to name me when he has an MVP speech, he's going to name me as a motivating factor. Um, uh, he definitely doesn't care about, I mean, ain't many people care about you, but he definitely doesn't. Um, so I just said a simple, I'm wrong would do wonders. And he responded with sounds like something my wife would text me. And I just would like to pray for Mrs. Bob right now. Cause I'm pretty sure she's never gotten it. And I don't know how you stay married without saying I'm wrong. I average I'm wrong 5.7 times a day.
00:41:58
Speaker 2: Have we actually seen his wife before? Or is this like Cheers with Norm? You're saying she doesn't exist? Just throwing it out there. All I want is Bob to say I was wrong or Bryce is the guy and we move on. And then we move on with our lives, Bobby. You don't say it, Bob. You're banned for now. You're banned for mentions. When we come back, it's college football talk here in the Mac and Bone Show looking for pumped or pissed fans. That's UNC, Charlotte and Wake on the happy side, Duke on the negative side. And was anyone else on either side of the top 10 chaos? Sports Radio, 92.7 WFNZ.
