ABOUT THIS EPISODE
Illinois basketball freshman Ethan Brown reportedly recorded the highest S2 Cognition test score among basketball players who had taken the assessment, according to a fascinating report from The Athletic.
And the results could reveal something important about how Brad Underwood and his Illinois Fighting Illini coaching staff identify overlooked basketball talent.
On today's Locked On Illini, we're discussing Illinois basketball's recruiting evaluation process, Ethan Brown's remarkable cognitive testing results, and why the Illini might have found another hidden gem.
The S2 Cognition assessment evaluates aspects of how athletes process information, including spatial awareness and memory.
According to the reporting, former Illinois star Keaton Wagler performed exceptionally well on the test. David Mirkovic reportedly scored even higher. And Ethan Brown reportedly surpassed both!
So what does that mean for Illinois basketball?
Brown already impressed during Illinois' exhibition against Cincinnati, recording 15 points, five rebounds, two assists, two steals and zero turnovers.
But can those early flashes translate into consistent production throughout the 2026–27 college basketball season?
And has Brad Underwood developed a recruiting evaluation process that gives Illinois an advantage?
