Speaker 1: 620-700-WLW, the show R & L Carrier Sports Talk presented by Kelsey Chevrolet.
00:00:11
Speaker 2: It is hosted by me, Lance McAllister. It's produced by Russ Jackson.
00:00:15
Speaker 1: And Russ there to remind me that I originally wanted to bump in with what we call a sound.
00:00:20
Speaker 3: Broken up by Cincinnati as the clock hits zero. Cincinnati improves to 4-0 by winning its Big 12 opener 31-26. The magic of Nip at Night continues.
00:00:39
Speaker 2: 4-0 Bearcats in Tucson.
00:00:41
Speaker 1: It'll be a late kick in the desert tomorrow night at 11 o'clock Cincinnati time versus the Arizona Wildcats on the scene early. To adjust his body clock, from the Enquirer, Cincinnati.com, Scott Springer. Are you currently hanging out with cactus? Is there a cactus nearby?
00:00:58
Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah. I went to the Saguaro National Park because old guys like me, you can get this lifetime park pass, and then it's like $ 75.
00:01:06
Speaker 2: $ 80.
00:01:07
Speaker 4: You might as well use it. I've had it for a handful of years. And so when I go to Colorado, I hit the Rocky Mountain Park, and then my wife and I have hit some here and there, so it's... You know, one of the luxuries of being elderly, which you're finding out.
00:01:23
Speaker 1: Yeah, I am. And we may have to talk about that pass. I may have to get that. So you're out early. The team got out early. And explain Scott's plan and the idea for dealing with the time change and the late kick with his players.
00:01:38
Speaker 4: Well, I've not owned a UC team to do this before, but I guess the idea was they practiced Thursday, got them out here, tried to keep them up and get them more used to the late night and all. Although in my book, most of these kids are up to 1, 2 a.m.
00:01:51
Speaker 1: Anyway.
00:01:54
Speaker 4: I think they'll be fine.
00:01:55
Speaker 3: I don't know.
00:01:56
Speaker 4: They've played games. It's just they haven't had good records come in playing games in mountain time. You go back to 23 in BYU, that was kind of a tight win where you had some turnovers. Obviously, last year against Utah, that didn't work out so well. The year before in Colorado was 24. You had the Heisman winner and Shador Sanders. That didn't work out very well. So they've not had a time zone type win. You've got to go back to Luke Fickle's second season, 2018, and that was West Coast at UCLA, and that was when everyone discovered Desmond Ritter that day.
00:02:32
Speaker 1: This run game, offensive line, running backs, wide receivers blocking downfield, it is a monster rushing attack.
00:02:39
Speaker 2: Isn't it?
00:02:40
Speaker 4: Oh, yeah. Well, you get 271 yards against Kansas State, and they're only allowing 96 coming into that game. Now, this rush defense here, Arizona is ranked pretty good as well. I think number 13 in the country out of like 138 teams, UC has the number seven rushing offense. So something's got to give. Satterfield's going to try to run the ball, obviously. I think they're going to have to throw some downfield.
00:03:04
Speaker 3: J.C.
00:03:05
Speaker 4: French only threw the ball recently. 13 times last week against the Miami Redhawks. He threw it well over 40. But I don't think it could be one-dimensional. But, you know, if you're one-dimensional and it works, then it's effective. If you can get those guys to block, if you get 270 yards, I like your chances.
00:03:22
Speaker 1: You hit on the perfect follow-up because J.C. French has been good. 75% completion percentage, six TDs, no interceptions, was 8 of 13 Saturday night. Are they okay if he's forced to sling it more on Saturday night?
00:03:38
Speaker 4: Well, if you look at what he did at Georgia Southern, he did throw for more yards than Brendan Sursby, albeit in the Sun Belt. He looked decent throwing the ball against Miami. He looked decent throwing the ball in the second game. He didn't have to throw it as much against Kansas State, and he's fine with that. And I think Scott Satterfield likes him taking the shorter, more conservative shots route sometimes rather than Sorsby every now and then would try to fit one end that maybe wasn't going to fit or try to hit somebody long that wasn't open. You know, it helped to have Cyrus Allen, an NFL receiver there, but these guys aren't bad. I mean, JV Gibson, actually the last game was the first game he didn't score a touchdown. Malachi Henry has done a great job and he's the son of a coach and, you know, he had a great punt return. He's blocked well and then he had the great reception and So eight out of 13 and you win, I think they'll take it.
00:04:32
Speaker 1: I would have never thought they'd take away the legs of Avery Johnson, the K-State quarterback, last week and have him throw 50 times. But, man, this Nate Woody defense, they're forcing turnovers. They're doing what Bearcat fans have been craving.
00:04:46
Speaker 4: Well, they've been better in the second half. You know, obviously against Miami, that was not very fun in the first half. That kind of allows it. So whatever you had there, just flush that down the toilet and go to plan B. But plan B, you outscored him 28-3 in the second half. You played a better second half against Kansas State coming back. And actually in the other games, if you look at them, second half defense has been good. So the adjustments have been right there. This guy's tough. Noah Fafita tore him up last year. That was going against the old 3-3-5 where you're allowing this pocket passer to just pick you apart. And they sacked him four times, and he still won.
00:05:23
Speaker 2: He's tough.
00:05:24
Speaker 4: He's a little dude. I interviewed him at Big 12 Media Days. They list him 5'10. He's probably about 5'8. But it doesn't matter if he's finding receivers. It doesn't matter how tall he is. But I think they're going to need some turnovers to have any chance. in this game.
00:05:39
Speaker 1: Well, they've certainly got the right guy to do it. I love the comment by Scott on his coaching show earlier in the week. I think he said, we feel if Antoine Peake Jr. gets anywhere near the ball, there's a chance it's coming out. For those who don't understand the impact, he's got three in the last four games or whatever it is, nine for his career.
00:05:56
Speaker 2: We know what his dad did.
00:05:57
Speaker 1: It's a family of noses for the football.
00:06:01
Speaker 2: It's incredible.
00:06:03
Speaker 4: Yeah, and at the Miami game, there was a Brown scout there, and he told me he was there looking at Teague, and I told him, I said, watch him. He's got a knack for finding the ball and making the hit that disrupts the ball, and they get it, and sure enough, he did. So I don't know if that's going to help him later on. Actually, I had to fly through Dallas this morning. His mother was on my flight to Dallas. She had an earlier flight out here to Tucson, but when you see somebody with a Pete Jr. shirt, number three, in Dallas, it's pretty easy to narrow down who it is.
00:06:35
Speaker 2: No doubt.
00:06:36
Speaker 4: She's awfully proud.
00:06:37
Speaker 2: No doubt about that. All right, you are out there. You're going to be all over this.
00:06:41
Speaker 1: Tell listeners how they can follow as the game unfolds and then all the post-game reactions.
00:06:47
Speaker 4: All right. If you want to go on X, it's S Springer Sports Cincinnati dot com. We do a live blog and update the game. So either way, you can catch updates there. If you're up, have some coffee and donuts at 2 a.m. We'll have some form of a story up there for you. Don't know how it's.
00:07:05
Speaker 2: Going to be.
00:07:05
Speaker 4: I this is one way you got to be honest. I think this is a tough one. And I picked Arizona to win, but you never know. If you can get through this one, that kind of changes a lot of folks' opinions. But I thought it was important for them to start 4-0 because you look at the next state and you've got four top 25 teams. And that's not counting Arizona or West Virginia.
00:07:26
Speaker 2: Yeah, difficult path ahead. I appreciate the time, as always. Thank you, sir.
00:07:30
Speaker 4: All right, I'm hitting the pool.
00:07:33
Speaker 2: All right, sounds like a plan. There you go, Scott Springer, checking in from.
00:07:36
Speaker 4: I wouldn't do that to anybody.
00:07:38
Speaker 2: Thank you, sir. Scott Springer checking in from Tucson.
00:07:41
Speaker 1: Bearcats and Wildcats, 11 o'clock kick, 10 o'clock pregame here on 700 WLW. Bearcats 4-0 for the first time since 2021. They've gotten themselves into a bit of a bind the last two games. They've figured their way out. They've overcome double-digit deficits in back-to-back games. First time that's happened since 2011. But to Scott's point about how the second half has been better, they're outscoring opponents 107-1. 227 in the second half this year and still i i and it is not a misprint uc's running back and they went for what 271 last week colt tabb leads the country rushing for 11.1 yards per carry he's rushing for a first down plus every time he carries the football scott mentioned noah fafita my goodness the arizona quarterback seems like he's been around forever He's put up 84 touchdowns at over 10,000 yards passing in his career. Among active college quarterbacks, he's number one in touchdowns, and he's number two in passing yards. And that Arizona offense, they are really, really, really good at converting on third down. I think I saw on the notes they are number six in the country at over 56%. I mentioned Ohio State has Iowa on the road against Iowa for a 330 kick tomorrow.
00:09:03
Speaker 2: That's the 70th time.
00:09:05
Speaker 1: The Ohio State Buckeyes have been part of the ESPN College Game Day matchup. That is the most of any team in the country. And I was talking about this with Rock last night on the Roundtable show. Jeremiah Smith right now, and it's like video game numbers, is on pace for 121 catches, 2,385 yards, and 26 touchdowns. See what the Buckeyes do against pretty dang good Iowa defense. They are allowing just eight points a game, leading the nation in scoring. If you missed the headlines, a real bummer for the Miami Redhawks. They have lost their starting quarterback. Second starting quarterback of the year lost, David McComb, who had seven touchdowns, one interception this year, and was averaging 17.3 yards per completion. They get an 0-4 Eddie George-led Bowling Green Falcons team on Saturday.
00:09:58
Speaker 2: All right, still ahead. We'll take a to the hoop.
00:10:01
Speaker 1: A little basketball, a little NKU Norse activity.
00:10:10
Speaker 2: They've got a Scoops for Hoops. I was pausing.
00:10:13
Speaker 1: I couldn't remember if they call it Scoops for Hoops or Hoops for Scoops. I guess Scoops for Hoops makes the most sense, so we'll go with that. Darren Horn shakes it after news. It's R & L Carrier Sports Talk. I'll be all right, I think. Presented by Kelsey Chevrolet, 700 WLW.
