Speaker 2: You want answers.

00:00:14
Speaker 3: The truth, truth, the truth. All right, let's get to at six oh eight seven hundred WLW. Welcome in RNL Carrier Sports Talk presented by Kelsey Chevrolet. I'm Lance McAllister Stock Bengals Football. My first guest a Bengals legend, remember of the Ring of Honor. Tomorrow night will kick off his forty first season as analyst for the Bengals.
00:00:39
Speaker 1: That would be Dave Lapham. How are you lack?
00:00:43
Speaker 2: How you doing?
00:00:43
Speaker 4: My man?
00:00:44
Speaker 2: Good to hear your voice.
00:00:47
Speaker 1: It is great to hear your voice.
00:00:48
Speaker 3: Before we get into the nuts and bolts, let's talk briefly about the big news of the day. Tony Pike's going to be joining you and Dan on broadcast in the pregame and postgame and during the game, and Tony's gonna do Bengal was lying with me and man, I'm gonna miss the heck out of doing it with you. But man, this is gonna lighten your load. I don't know how you've done what you've done for as many years has you got it, Dave.
00:01:10
Speaker 2: I hear your lnswer. It was time. It was time to lighten the load. There's no question about it.
00:01:14
Speaker 4: And and Tony Pike is UH is the perfect uh, the perfect candidate to to UH basically enlighten and educate UH the Cincinnati fan base.
00:01:25
Speaker 2: You know.
00:01:26
Speaker 4: I mean, we've got fans that love the Cincinnati Bengals. UH wants the Cincinnati Bengals to UH to do well, to to win championships. And UH, Tony Pike is a great source of information.
00:01:37
Speaker 2: He'll keep everybody posted.
00:01:39
Speaker 4: Us to who's playing well, who needs to pick it up, who's uh, who's nicked up a little bit, who's not what they what, who, how they should attack the opponent, where they should attack the opponent, and UH. And I'm looking forward to Tony's contributors, looking forward to working with him during the course of the season.
00:01:56
Speaker 2: For sure.
00:01:58
Speaker 1: Let's talk about camp today. Point One of the themes, Dave, seems to be the physicality of camp. Do you like the kind of the tone and vibe and physicality of this camp so far?
00:02:09
Speaker 4: Yeah, I think I think Zach Taylor and his coaching staff have said a really good tone. You know, I think Physicality is the name of the game in the AFC North. You know, the Baltimore Ravens are a physical football team, Pittsburgh steel is physical, the Cleveland Browns are a physical football team.
00:02:27
Speaker 2: I think the AFC.
00:02:28
Speaker 4: North, in fact, from top to bottom, may be the most physical team, most physical division in all of pro football. So, you know, physicality in practice, I think is a good policy. You know, you need to you need to set a tone on a daily basis, and I think that that's what Zach and his his coaching staff and the players are trying to do.
00:02:51
Speaker 2: Uh.
00:02:52
Speaker 4: And you know, it kicks off tomorrow night against the Detroit Liones in that.
00:02:56
Speaker 2: First preseason game.
00:02:57
Speaker 4: And and Dan Campbell is known as the fil the physical guy himself. He's all about physicality and he wants his football team to play that way. So I'm sure that that there'll be some some pads popping when when the ball is kicked off at paid Course Stadium tomorrow night.
00:03:17
Speaker 1: And boy, Dave, the Dexter Lawrence impact on the field, off the field, it has been everywhere and it's been real so far, hasn't it.
00:03:27
Speaker 4: I think that's a great way to put it. Lance real Dexter Lawrence is a stud I mean, this guy is he's big, he's thick, he's broad, he's wide every way he can be big. He's big, but he's an athletic. I mean, he's got really unbelievable quickness. He's off the ball first, you know, his first step quickness is extraordinary. He plays with tremendous strength and leverage, and he's almost impossible to move off the ball in the running game at the line of screen image. He's made their running game better all by himself with the acquisition in Dexter Lawrence, and you know, teaming up with other acquisitions that they've made and other players they've drafted. In the defensive line, I think it's going to be light years better than it was last year in terms of stopping the run. And that's the first thing you have to do. Stop the run.
00:04:20
Speaker 2: Make them throw the football because they have.
00:04:22
Speaker 4: To, not because they want to, you know, And that's what good defenses do. And I think the Cincinnati Bengals defense has gone from bottom third in the National Football League to be kind to above middle of the pack. You know, I think they're approaching the top ten defense in the National Football League.
00:04:40
Speaker 2: And you pair that with.
00:04:43
Speaker 4: What they've got going offensively, a lot of weapons amongst the best in the National Football League, and the offensive side of the football, starting with the quarterback Joe Burrow. He's as good as anybody in my opinion, I think he's the best quarterback in the National Football League. And Jamar Chase and t Higgins throwing the football to them. Stick at the tight end position, Chase Brown at the running back position, you can run the ball effectively, and is really good receiver out of the backfield. They've got weapons galore, and you throw in special special teams. You know, they've got specialists that are amongst the best in the National Football League. I'd pair Ryan Rico or I'd put Ryan Rico and Evan McPherson as a duo as a tandem, uh, you know, in terms of excellence in what they can do to affect field position and put opponents on long fields and help the Bengals accumulate short fields. I'd put them up with anybody in the National Football League. So I think this team that this team is locked and loaded with tremendous personnel and can make a run for Super Bowl title.
00:05:48
Speaker 2: Lance, I really.
00:05:49
Speaker 3: Do Dave is a former offensive lineman. Do you like them working on under center a little bit more with Joe with the offense so far in camp?
00:06:01
Speaker 4: I do Lance, I like that a lot, you know, I think you know, running the football is something that offensive linemen take pride in, you know, And and it's a way that you can wear the defense down. You keep pounding and pounding the rock, and at some point in time, you know the defense will break and you're gonna break a big one. You're gonna break one maybe to the house, and Chase Brown can take it to the house, and other people at the running back position.
00:06:27
Speaker 2: Can do the same thing.
00:06:28
Speaker 4: And and then you know that affects the pass rush when the opponent's a little fatigued and you know you've hammered on on first and second down and it's it's a third and medium of short and they're not sure if you're still gonna run the ball again or a little play action pass and throw the football or drop back to throw the football.
00:06:46
Speaker 2: They're fatigued, you know.
00:06:47
Speaker 4: And and now you've got the upper hand and you can you can really put put points on the board and do some damage, uh to the opposition. So you know, I like what they can do and how they can do it offensively, and I think Zach Taylor and Dan Pitcher are going to do a really good job putting the players in position to execute and show what they've.
00:07:08
Speaker 3: Got preseason game number one of three tomorrow night, and Dave every year at this time, I still marvel over the fact that in nineteen seventy five you played seven preseason games, including the Hall of Fame game, and in most years of your career, you guys played six preseason games, which looking back now seems crazy.
00:07:30
Speaker 2: It really does, doesn't it.
00:07:32
Speaker 4: I Mean, it's mind boggling that nineteen seventy five season seven.
00:07:38
Speaker 2: Games, and none of them meant a hill of beans. None of them didn't mean the damn thing. Won them all, lost them all, it didn't matter.
00:07:48
Speaker 4: You open the regular season and everybody started to square one.
00:07:52
Speaker 2: Everybody was zero and zero and man and back then.
00:07:57
Speaker 4: Forrest greg who I love and respect as a as a head coach, he put together a hell of a football team, and I respect him and and what Hank Buller and and everybody did on the offensive and defensive side of the football. You know, we won a lot of football games, man, but I'll tell you at the end of that season, I was dead because in the preseason we played at least a half, sometimes three quarters of every football game. I mean there was no you know, okay, yeah, let's look young guys play and let's see what we've got for for depth.
00:08:27
Speaker 2: I mean, you know, they wanted, they wanted.
00:08:29
Speaker 4: To get to get to work, get down the business right away. So yeah, those football seasons were long and arduous, but very rewarding to say the.
00:08:39
Speaker 1: Least, no doubt, no doubt.
00:08:43
Speaker 3: Hey, it is great here in your voice that means football is here. I can't wait to hear you guys tomorrow night. Have a great broadcast and always good catching.
00:08:51
