ABOUT THIS EPISODE
True legacy building requires an intentional mindset shift away from individualistic Western norms and toward an interdependent, multi-generational family mission. In this episode, guest Chris Patton shares his transformative journey from planning a comfortable mountain retirement to
building an enterprise engineered to fund kingdom ministry across five generations. The core message underscores that practical stewardship is not just about writing a traditional will, but about building governance, cultivating marital alignment, and bringing adult children into a collaborative, kingdom-minded covenant.
KEY EPISODE TAKEAWAYS
● How Do You Shift a Family from Independence to Interdependence?
To move away from Western individualist cultural habits, a family must transition from launching completely autonomous individuals to cultivating a unified family team on an active spiritual and business mission.
○ Deep-Dive Context: Cultural frameworks suggest that parenting effectively stops at age 18, releasing children to live entirely independent lives. True legacy leaders recognize that while parental authority ends when children reach adulthood, spiritual and structural influence continues across multiple decades to unite the family around a larger purpose.
○ The Biblical / Stewardship Principle: This mirrors the scriptural patterns of families remaining structurally and spiritually bound to fulfill the greatest commandments and the Great Commission down through the lineages.
● How Do You Introduce a Strategic Legacy Vision to Adult Children?
Introducing a sweeping legacy shift to adult children begins by seeking their forgiveness for prioritizing cultural norms of separation, followed by presenting a compelling vision for a unified family enterprise while giving them total autonomy to opt in or out.
○ Deep-Dive Context: When introducing this concept during a family vacation, Chris presented a detailed presentation highlighting their options: consuming their remaining wealth, blindly passing everything via a standard will, or intentionally investing into a collaborative family enterprise designed to steward resources collectively.
○ The Biblical / Stewardship Principle: True biblical stewardship avoids dumping unvetted capital onto unprepared beneficiaries, looking instead to actively disciple and train the next generation to handle family resources.
● What Role Does Spousal Alignment Play in Family Legacy Planning?
Spousal alignment serves as the crucial foundation for legacy development, requiring spouses to learn together, process structural updates collaboratively, and actively adjust personal timelines to move forward as a unified front.
○ Deep-Dive Context: Chris notes that it is his responsibility not to run out ahead of his wife, Kim, but to intentionally study multi-generational models alongside her. Embracing her distinct perspective ensures an accurate pulse on how their children will respond to structural family decisions.
○ The Biblical / Stewardship Principle: This principle honors the design of marriage as a unified covenant where both partners combine their unique gifts to oversee what God has given them to steward.

00:00:17.280 --> 00:00:23.600
Welcome to the building to walk in the marketplace christian to the next level.
00:00:23.839 --> 00:00:27.359
Here's your host, Christian entrepreneur Tyler McCart.
00:00:30.320 --> 00:00:32.159
What's going on, truly?
00:00:32.560 --> 00:00:34.079
Life Legacy.
00:00:34.320 --> 00:00:36.320
Yours truly, Tyler McCart, coming at you.
00:00:36.479 --> 00:00:40.479
Excited to be able to do this video and podcast audio.
00:00:40.640 --> 00:00:43.119
And I have an interview today.
00:00:43.280 --> 00:00:52.880
Now, I know for all my podcast listeners, uh, the ones that have been with me for many, many years, uh, you might remember the name Chris Patton.
00:00:52.960 --> 00:01:02.000
Now, Chris has been a friend of mine for goodness, a good little while since I interviewed him, and we reconnected over a year ago.
00:01:02.159 --> 00:01:06.799
Um, actually, it had to have been through the prompt of the Holy Spirit.
00:01:06.959 --> 00:01:20.159
Uh, because I reached out to Chris, and Chris, you'd be able to tell the story better than I will, but we got back together uh pretty much um right as soon as you were leaving.
00:01:20.319 --> 00:01:22.959
Um or just stepped away.
00:01:23.359 --> 00:01:42.640
You had just reached out a week, two or three before the FDI or FDE conference in Gainesville, and then we're walking through the grass there, and you I just I'm walking through and I hear, Chris Patton, are you what are you doing here?
00:01:43.280 --> 00:01:47.280
So then we got to sit down and actually it's first time we've met in person.
00:01:47.599 --> 00:01:49.760
First time in person, that's exactly right.
00:01:50.000 --> 00:01:51.280
First time in person.
00:01:51.840 --> 00:02:04.319
So, you know, today, uh, to my audience, um, I want to hear, so so guys, here I want to set this up and then I want Chris to kind of unpack this a little bit.
00:02:04.799 --> 00:02:08.159
But so Chris has been on a journey, and I've been on this journey with him.
00:02:08.240 --> 00:02:21.599
And Chris is actually the gentleman that actually, when you've heard me kind of tell my story a little bit, Chris is the one that actually encouraged me to check out and look at what Legacy Stone and Seventh Gen Consulting was doing.
00:02:21.840 --> 00:02:24.240
And he was the first one that actually said that.
00:02:24.560 --> 00:02:36.240
And now we're come almost a whole year because it was actually in June when all that took place, and now here we are in July doing this interview.
00:02:36.479 --> 00:02:44.240
And Chris just had an awesome experience, and he's gonna go into all that with his family.
00:02:44.560 --> 00:02:56.960
But Chris, I want to go back to this whole journey, okay, of where you were at a year ago of getting all somewhat of your decks in a row and being frustrated in the process.
00:02:57.120 --> 00:03:04.639
Kind of go me take me back to that moment of whenever you started to think through this whole legacy and generational uh thing right here.
00:03:05.120 --> 00:03:06.879
Take me through that, walk me through that right there.
00:03:07.360 --> 00:03:19.120
First of all, Tyler, this may need to be in volumes or episodes because it's not a story, um, but I will short, I'll shorten it as best I can.
00:03:19.360 --> 00:03:31.759
Uh, I would say that um five years ago, my wife and I went on vacation in a camper and it rained the entire week.
00:03:32.000 --> 00:03:40.240
And during that week, we played a lot of cards, and after about three or four days of that, we finally resorted to conversation.
00:03:40.879 --> 00:03:47.039
We had conversation around what does the next five to ten years look like?
00:03:47.280 --> 00:03:55.120
And at the time, my vision for that next five to ten years was we would buy a cabin up in the mountains of North Carolina.
00:03:55.280 --> 00:04:03.680
We were in South Carolina at the time, and we'd retire there eventually, not retire, but move there and and live in the mountains.
00:04:03.759 --> 00:04:06.560
I wanted some land in the mountains, I wanted the elevation.
00:04:06.879 --> 00:04:12.560
And my wife said, in a very quick answer, when I asked the question, what do you see?
00:04:12.719 --> 00:04:15.840
She said, We're gonna live in Georgia right next to Arcettis.
00:04:16.800 --> 00:04:20.720
And that's not where my head was or my heart.
00:04:21.040 --> 00:04:29.439
And I will say selfishly for myself, I was thinking, I want to go do my thing, and they can come visit me.
00:04:30.560 --> 00:04:33.519
Fortunately, God has changed my heart on that.
00:04:33.680 --> 00:04:38.240
Uh, but he started by having my wife say, I want to be in Georgia with the kids.
00:04:38.560 --> 00:04:47.279
Now it's at the time we had one in Peru, one in Florida, and one in Georgia, but we knew over time they're gonna move to Georgia or back.
00:04:47.680 --> 00:05:07.680
So three years later, two years ago, we bought property just outside of Atlanta, out in the country, and we started working toward building a place that the kids would want to come back and visit uh and hopefully be here within 30 minutes of us or at least an hour.
00:05:08.000 --> 00:05:12.319
So fast forward to uh that move.
00:05:12.560 --> 00:05:19.439
I'm still doing my job in in South Carolina, but it was remote, so I could move to Georgia and just fly out of Atlanta.
00:05:19.759 --> 00:05:22.240
And then the job comes to an end.
00:05:22.720 --> 00:05:25.519
God says, You need to step off this path.
00:05:25.600 --> 00:05:26.879
There's a new path.
00:05:27.120 --> 00:05:28.480
So finish that up.
00:05:28.639 --> 00:05:30.879
That was last year when you and I met.
00:05:36.160 --> 00:05:41.279
And I was going in the process of discerning what does God want from me next?
00:05:41.360 --> 00:05:42.720
What is this next path?
00:05:42.959 --> 00:05:44.160
I had no idea.
00:05:44.480 --> 00:05:46.160
I wanted to work with C12.
00:05:46.240 --> 00:05:57.759
I had various things I thought I wanted to do, but he put it on my heart and pricked my heart at the same time around scripture that kept talking about this generational family.
00:05:58.079 --> 00:06:04.399
Uh, and then everywhere I bumped into somebody or something, I'm hearing about generational family.
00:06:04.879 --> 00:06:16.000
So last September, finished the job, spent the next three months really digging deep, praying, listening to God, what is this about, and what does it look like?
00:06:16.399 --> 00:06:26.240
And started January, fired up and ready to go to build this generational family on mission thing.
00:06:26.480 --> 00:06:31.360
Don't even have a real word for it, but don't know what to call it.
00:06:31.519 --> 00:06:43.120
No, I don't, but the the idea is this I've come to realize in the last year, two years, three years, it's been an evolution because I'm slow, but I'm worth the wait.
00:06:43.439 --> 00:06:46.480
And God has worked on my heart, and this is what I see.
00:06:46.639 --> 00:06:50.560
I see, I've got my wife and I have been married 31 years.
00:06:50.639 --> 00:06:55.680
We've got three grown adult children, two are married, one is not yet.
00:06:56.000 --> 00:07:02.959
And I am not done with my role as the parent of this family.
00:07:03.120 --> 00:07:05.600
I'm done parenting because I got three adult children.
00:07:05.680 --> 00:07:08.720
They're on their own, they're doing their adult thing.
00:07:08.879 --> 00:07:11.839
I don't have authority anymore, but I've got influence.
00:07:12.000 --> 00:07:21.680
And my picture of family has gone from get them to 18, launch them, and let them do their thing and come visit when they want to or on holidays to now.
00:07:21.839 --> 00:07:28.720
I want to see, I want to be able to see from whatever perspective I will have in 150 years.
00:07:28.879 --> 00:07:34.560
I want to see a family, assuming that the Lord has not returned yet at that point.
00:07:35.040 --> 00:07:41.040
I want to see a family that is, I don't know, 500 strong.
00:07:41.600 --> 00:07:43.920
And it's five generations in.
00:07:44.000 --> 00:08:06.560
And don't check the math on that because I don't thought about that part, but I want to see a five generations in family still doing mission for the Lord, still pursuing the greatest commandments and the great condition, and using this thing that some guy five generations ago and his wife and his kids built that is now funding our mission.
00:08:06.800 --> 00:08:22.639
It is discipling our families and children, and it's continuing to appoint each new generation to the Lord in a way that gets them to see this mission that they're on, that He's put individually put them on, but also as a family.
00:08:23.920 --> 00:08:25.120
That's now my picture.
00:08:25.279 --> 00:08:39.200
And I'm trying to build this, build business within it so that they're intrigued and they're drawn in, build banking within it, because I want them to be able to and use this funding for various things.
00:08:39.600 --> 00:08:44.879
But all of this surrounded is surrounding a faith that I want to pass down.
00:08:45.120 --> 00:08:46.320
That's the gist of it.
00:08:46.559 --> 00:09:23.600
So to catch up to today, just last two weeks ago, three weeks ago, we took our kids on a family vacation, went to an all-inclusive resort, brought everybody in, and sat down the first morning of vacation and spent two hours in uh in one of the meeting rooms walking them through an overview of this thing, the why behind it, where their mom and I have started five years ago, where we've come over the last couple of years, why we want to do this.
00:09:23.919 --> 00:09:39.120
We explained, hey, we have the option to take what we've built over time, what God has given us to steward financially, and just live off of it for the next 20, 30 years and enjoy the heck out of it.
00:09:39.279 --> 00:09:42.159
And if there's anything left for you guys, we'll leave it in the wheel.
00:09:42.240 --> 00:09:43.360
That would be one option.
00:09:43.600 --> 00:09:54.639
Another option is we feel that we are stewards of his resources, so we just give it all away to various organizations and still there's nothing.
00:09:54.879 --> 00:09:59.440
Or we could just dump it on all of you and potentially ruin it.
00:09:59.759 --> 00:10:18.240
But here's what we've chosen to do is invest it into this idea that is our family on mission, invest it in a way that it continues to grow and build and fund ministry for the next 100-150 years through our family, not just other organizations.
00:10:18.720 --> 00:10:22.000
So went through the pitch, took two hours, went slow.
00:10:22.159 --> 00:10:29.440
What's in it for them as children who who have not yet bought into this whole thing?
00:10:29.600 --> 00:10:33.360
Uh, not sure what even to think about what mom and dad are talking about.
00:10:33.679 --> 00:10:37.759
But after two hours, Tyler, and I'll stop with this and you can ask questions.
00:10:37.919 --> 00:10:40.799
After two hours, I got great engagement.
00:10:41.519 --> 00:10:44.480
I went through five or six iterations of that presentation.
00:10:44.559 --> 00:10:50.080
And the first one would have put the most professional bank to sleep.
00:10:50.320 --> 00:10:59.039
And uh the last one engaged my kids and fortunately had some wise people speak into it and came out with a better presentation.
00:10:59.200 --> 00:11:04.559
But now I've got the interest of each of these three children, plus the two spouses.
00:11:04.879 --> 00:11:08.639
We're having conversations about it, and I am fired up.
00:11:09.840 --> 00:11:10.799
That was a lot.
00:11:11.039 --> 00:11:11.519
Wow.
00:11:11.759 --> 00:11:18.159
Well, Chris, I mean, wow, I mean, bravo, buddy.
00:11:18.559 --> 00:11:19.039
Bravo.
00:11:19.600 --> 00:11:31.519
Uh, and you know, before I before I forget, give me the context of your kids' ages so that just for so that they can understand uh the context of your kids' ages.
00:11:31.919 --> 00:11:36.480
I've got twin girls that are 27 years old and a son that's 29.
00:11:36.960 --> 00:11:43.200
Uh, my son is married, has been for two years, lives up in about an hour from us in North Atlanta.
00:11:43.519 --> 00:11:50.559
One of the twin girls is married, lives about an hour west of or east of us, uh outside of Atlanta.
00:11:50.720 --> 00:12:01.120
And then her sister, the third child uh twin, is in Peru and teaching second grade there, has been doing that for five years.
00:12:01.440 --> 00:12:02.000
Wow.
00:12:03.519 --> 00:12:05.679
So no grandkids yet.
00:12:05.919 --> 00:12:07.519
No grandkids yet, okay.
00:12:07.759 --> 00:12:13.279
Because I mean, I just I had to give that context right there because you know, and how old are you right now?
00:12:13.519 --> 00:12:14.559
I'm 55.
00:12:14.879 --> 00:12:15.519
55.
00:12:15.679 --> 00:12:20.159
Okay, so no grandkids yet, but we know that they're probably on the way.
00:12:20.399 --> 00:12:21.759
Hopefully, Lord willing.
00:12:22.080 --> 00:12:22.960
Lord willing.
00:12:25.519 --> 00:12:33.600
Um, so Chris, I want to go, I think it's so interesting.
00:12:33.840 --> 00:12:37.679
I want to go back to that time in the camper.
00:12:39.440 --> 00:12:39.759
Okay.
00:12:41.679 --> 00:12:53.039
And when your wife says, This is what I was wanting, and you know, tell me that moment right there a little bit more.
00:12:53.360 --> 00:12:58.720
Because I mean, obviously, that probably took you off the rails or kind of like made you go tilt.
00:12:59.200 --> 00:13:03.360
I'll say it this way my heart sank into my pants.
00:13:04.080 --> 00:13:04.559
Why?
00:13:04.799 --> 00:13:23.039
My head's because I had a what I call today a selfish fix, and I know myself, and yes, I was very selfishly thinking, what we've uh all this happens in in nanoseconds in my brain.
00:13:23.600 --> 00:13:25.039
She says, Oh, that's easy.
00:13:25.120 --> 00:13:30.480
I want to be in Georgia next to the kids, and I want to be able to be involved in their lives daily if I want to.
00:13:30.720 --> 00:13:37.360
I don't want them living in our home or on our property necessarily, but I want to be right there with them.
00:13:37.440 --> 00:13:42.720
And if I want to see them three times in a week or seven times in a week, I want to be able to do that.
00:13:44.399 --> 00:13:51.279
And the next what seemed like a minute or two in my head, but in real time was a second or two.
00:13:51.759 --> 00:13:59.600
I went, I just lost the cabin in the mountains where summer it gets up to 75 degrees.
00:13:59.679 --> 00:14:01.440
I just won't vanish.
00:14:01.840 --> 00:14:04.240
Yeah, I wanted elevation, I wanted cool weather.
00:14:04.320 --> 00:14:05.279
I love the mountains.
00:14:05.360 --> 00:14:18.960
There's something spiritual for me when I drive up into the mountains and the rhododendron and the green, where I've left, you know, dead and dry Georgia, and I'm up in the mountains and it's all lush and whatever.
00:14:19.200 --> 00:14:21.440
I just love that atmosphere.
00:14:21.600 --> 00:14:26.960
I love the old guy that's driving this old 57 Ford pickup to the general store.
00:14:27.440 --> 00:14:31.120
I've got this Mayberry picture of the mountains.
00:14:31.440 --> 00:14:31.919
Yeah.
00:14:32.240 --> 00:14:34.720
That was my vision for years.
00:14:34.799 --> 00:14:36.720
That's what I've really wanted to get to.
00:14:36.879 --> 00:14:38.639
Not that I would quit working.
00:14:38.879 --> 00:14:43.919
I imagined working with a computer and a and a Zoom call and that kind of thing.
00:14:44.080 --> 00:14:50.000
I don't want, I don't feel like I need to retire, so to speak, but it was the location that I was so set on.
00:14:50.559 --> 00:14:55.039
And when she said that, my heart dropped, my head started spinning.
00:14:55.279 --> 00:15:23.440
And the first thought I had was but she just moved, and we won't go all the way into this, but she had just moved to South Carolina from Georgia, leaving her teaching career, leaving our kids, leaving her mother and sister and family, my family, our church, some extremely close women friends to move to South Carolina to know nobody because my work took us there.
00:15:23.679 --> 00:15:30.639
At this point in time, it would have been three or four years earlier, turned into a total of seven years.
00:15:30.879 --> 00:15:33.200
Um, that we're in South Carolina.
00:15:33.519 --> 00:15:40.639
And my next thought goes to, but she's done this, and you're literally about to what?
00:15:40.879 --> 00:15:49.600
We're not moving to Georgia, and so I pause long enough to to get my wits about me to say, tell me more.
00:15:51.440 --> 00:15:51.919
Wise man.
00:15:52.399 --> 00:15:55.200
That's the classic, buy myself some time, right?
00:15:55.519 --> 00:15:57.600
And started talking through some of it.
00:15:57.759 --> 00:16:06.480
And as she does, I'm thinking, how do I not let this get set in concrete because I don't want to lock it in yet?
00:16:06.799 --> 00:16:12.879
But anyway, cut to the face, I just said, let's talk through what that would look like.
00:16:13.279 --> 00:16:18.879
Yeah, let's say we do that and we start now, and it takes us a couple of years.
00:16:19.039 --> 00:16:21.200
I'm working remote, so we can make that happen.
00:16:21.279 --> 00:16:25.120
I can go to Peter, my boss, and we'll make that happen.
00:16:25.679 --> 00:16:27.279
And I just came out with it like this.
00:16:27.360 --> 00:16:36.480
I said, Could could you agree that we would not go into a neighborhood, but instead would find some land, like I was thinking we'd find in the mountains, just find it out in the country somewhere.
00:16:36.639 --> 00:16:36.960
Right.
00:16:37.840 --> 00:16:39.840
She goes, Yeah, that'd be easy.
00:16:40.559 --> 00:16:49.600
And so I start thinking through all of what could and would happen, and I realized the only sacrifice I was making was elevation, elevation, right?
00:16:50.799 --> 00:17:03.279
And the truth is God was starting something then that is consuming me today, but at the time I thought was opposing me.
00:17:03.679 --> 00:17:04.160
Yeah.
00:17:04.400 --> 00:17:20.400
So Chris, so you you get this thought, you're going through, you know, after you go leave the uh the camping site, you go back, you y'all at least talked about the whole you know different elevation.
00:17:20.559 --> 00:17:29.759
We're gonna be now in somewhere rural Georgia with some land, but you still haven't started thinking generationally yet, I don't think.
00:17:29.920 --> 00:17:34.559
No, you still haven't thought about any kind of enterprise thing involving family.
00:17:35.039 --> 00:17:45.359
So, how how did that start to creep in and start to kind of bump up and start to change your vision, yeah, you know, for where things are at?
00:17:45.519 --> 00:17:46.400
Where was that at?
00:17:46.799 --> 00:17:47.599
Couple of different things.
00:17:47.680 --> 00:17:53.920
I can't name there was no one point in time in a small group at church.
00:17:54.240 --> 00:18:02.640
We were reading, uh I think we're going through a book, but I read some scripture that was crystal clear.
00:18:02.720 --> 00:18:04.319
I don't even remember where it was.
00:18:04.400 --> 00:18:20.720
I couldn't quote it right now, but at the moment it was crystal clear about the generational idea of a family and how much the Bible in the Bible is talking about generation after generation in various contexts.
00:18:20.960 --> 00:18:22.880
So that was one thing that struck me.
00:18:23.039 --> 00:18:25.839
I'm like, I've never looked at our family as generational.
00:18:26.000 --> 00:18:31.519
I've looked at our family as, you know, I've got parents, kids, eventual grandkids.
00:18:31.599 --> 00:18:34.400
That's about the extent of what I'm gonna see at any given time.
00:18:34.960 --> 00:18:39.440
What does this mean if I started shifting my view to a generation?
00:18:40.480 --> 00:19:02.880
The first thing that came to mind was in my work, I bumped into the Kathy family a good bit at Chick-fil-A, had the privilege of knowing some people that work there, got to go to to spend some time at headquarters, spent some time with Dan, Kathy, and hearing what that they have a 100-year plan for their family and business.
00:19:03.039 --> 00:19:06.319
And it's not about the restaurants, it's about the family.
00:19:06.799 --> 00:19:10.079
You've heard the term family office, so it's that kind of a mindset.
00:19:10.559 --> 00:19:18.799
But when they said a hundred-year plan, I'm thinking you can't even predict technology 25 years, much less 100.
00:19:18.880 --> 00:19:20.720
How do you, or how do you anyway?
00:19:20.960 --> 00:19:24.880
That was a mystery to me, but now I get it.
00:19:25.200 --> 00:19:42.640
They're not planning detail 100 years from now, they're planning purpose and values, they're carrying that through their family, they're building training and discipling processes and governance in their family that goes out a hundred years and then some.
00:19:43.200 --> 00:19:52.640
So as I start getting bits and pieces thrown at me, God is working with me slowly because I'm not that's not where my head was.
00:19:53.039 --> 00:20:07.759
Yeah, and once you get past a certain number of those incidents where God's speaking to you, I and I'm during the season, I'm also sitting at my at the barn.
00:20:07.839 --> 00:20:10.799
I've got a little my quiet time.
00:20:10.880 --> 00:20:18.079
So I go down every morning, about 360 mornings a year, and I build a little fire and I do my quiet time.
00:20:18.480 --> 00:20:32.559
And I couldn't stop seeing generations, I couldn't stop seeing where God says, you know, you need to be thinking much longer down the line than just how do I get my grandkids to come to this property?
00:20:32.720 --> 00:20:35.039
What are you going to teach them when they do?
00:20:35.279 --> 00:20:39.440
How are you going to pour into them and their parents, your kids?
00:20:39.680 --> 00:20:41.519
And it just is blossom from there.
00:20:41.599 --> 00:20:45.680
And then I reach out and you know, God puts you and I back together and I say, What are you doing?
00:20:46.079 --> 00:20:47.680
I don't know, it's this legacy stuff.
00:20:48.559 --> 00:20:52.799
You know, it just keeps dropping back up.
00:20:53.279 --> 00:20:53.680
Yeah.
00:20:53.920 --> 00:20:58.000
So it's been a process, it's been a couple of years process.
00:20:58.160 --> 00:21:08.720
The last 12 months have been the fastest um forming of it, but it it goes back, you know, several years before that.
00:21:12.160 --> 00:21:18.240
Chris, I know we could keep talking more and more about all this, and we're already like 20 uh minutes in.
00:21:19.680 --> 00:21:28.079
But I just um I appreciate your wife.
00:21:31.359 --> 00:21:38.400
I just I just gotta put that out there because you know, she was thinking generationally.
00:21:38.559 --> 00:21:59.200
I mean, and I'm not sitting there knocking, you know, because the mindset is out there that hey, I'm an MT master, I've done my job, I raised them, kicked them out, they can do the stuff on their own, individually, because that's what I our Western society does.
00:21:59.440 --> 00:21:59.839
Exactly.
00:22:00.960 --> 00:22:34.720
And I can go for you, I can go to the mountains and kind of come back down, visit my family, but I'm gonna be up there doing my own thing, so to speak, where that praise God, you know, you had a course correction and you know you and I I do wanna I do want to take I do want to yeah, just take a moment right here with that.
00:22:37.039 --> 00:22:50.240
With that of like, hey, because you shared that with me earlier, and I just want you to take about two or three minutes on this right here, Chris, about how you reintroduce that to your kids.
00:22:50.640 --> 00:22:56.319
Your course correction of saying, hey, instead of you guys just doing your own thing, I want it to be us.
00:22:56.640 --> 00:23:00.400
Yeah, take about two or three minutes and kind of riff on that for me.
00:23:01.359 --> 00:23:07.440
Also, like the pitch we did at the vacation a couple weeks ago, back at Easter.
00:23:08.160 --> 00:23:12.799
Um I had a different timeline in mind for the next actions.
00:23:12.880 --> 00:23:17.279
We're gonna work on family values, that kind of thing, war values, mission, vision, that kind of thing.
00:23:17.440 --> 00:23:18.880
And it just didn't pan out.
00:23:19.119 --> 00:23:28.640
But to start, the Saturday before Easter, we did Zoom call with the one in Peru, and the the rest of the kids are sitting in front of me with their spouses.
00:23:29.200 --> 00:23:41.119
And Kim and I sat in front of them and we said, we want to apologize and ask forgiveness from you for something you don't even realize we did wrong to you.
00:23:42.079 --> 00:23:47.839
And I went into the Western mindset, though I didn't describe it that way.
00:23:47.920 --> 00:23:59.200
I just said your mom and I basically followed the culture that we're in, and we had plans to raise you to 18, make you independent, get you able to go and do your own thing.
00:23:59.440 --> 00:24:01.519
And it's all sounds good.
00:24:02.079 --> 00:24:14.720
But we go to Latin America through my work and we realize there are other families that are two or three generations in the same house, or even four, and we're like, this is mind-blowing.
00:24:14.960 --> 00:24:26.640
And we start realizing we like that better, but then we start looking in scripture, and God is constantly talking about the generations and not send them away.
00:24:26.960 --> 00:24:33.039
So we want to ask your forgiveness, number one, for doing that, but not just for that.
00:24:33.279 --> 00:24:41.680
Mainly it's for this, because we are about to do a hard 180 on you, and we need you to know we're not trying to make things difficult for you.
00:24:41.759 --> 00:24:59.440
We just asking forgiveness for the direction change because now we're gonna really put emphasis on gathering, living, doing life together with you guys.
00:25:00.079 --> 00:25:08.720
And you have the option to opt in or out of this because we've already given you new households, right?
00:25:08.799 --> 00:25:13.599
You are the two of you are married, and the the one in Peru is is doing her own thing for years.
00:25:13.759 --> 00:25:15.359
So we are not demanding anything.
00:25:15.440 --> 00:25:18.480
We have no authority here, we just have influence.
00:25:18.799 --> 00:25:27.359
As the parents that raised you in this way, we would like to change direction and have you want to be in a part of this whole thing we're doing.
00:25:28.480 --> 00:25:40.559
And I'm sure, Chris, that you'd had already before that Zoom call right there, you'd already had many like small conversations, yeah, somewhat with them to kind of prep them for this.
00:25:40.640 --> 00:25:44.400
You just didn't drop the drop the bomb on them at a zoom call.
00:25:44.720 --> 00:25:55.279
I didn't go into a lot of depth in any of those conversations because one, I'm still figuring it out through those conversations, and two, yeah, I didn't want to push them away or scare them off.
00:25:55.440 --> 00:26:10.319
And yeah, so I didn't do anything, I didn't say anything concrete, but I just said, you know, we're we're we're shifting gears a little bit, we're trying some of this, or we'd love to have you guys come, you know, here and I think we're gonna do a family vacation with everybody.
00:26:10.400 --> 00:26:16.400
And anyway, it was just yes, I had prepped them a little bit.
00:26:16.480 --> 00:26:18.319
It wasn't just this total shock.
00:26:18.480 --> 00:26:20.960
And frankly, they didn't know what to think.
00:26:21.039 --> 00:26:22.559
They're like, Why would you apologize?
00:26:22.640 --> 00:26:23.599
Why are you asking forgiveness?
00:26:23.759 --> 00:26:36.559
Y'all I said, I think it'll become more clear as we go that we are changing drastically, changing our focus, and it will impact you some ways.
00:26:36.640 --> 00:26:37.599
It'll be very positive.
00:26:37.759 --> 00:26:41.759
Some ways you may be like, I don't want anything to do with you guys in this area.
00:26:41.839 --> 00:26:43.039
This is my life.
00:26:43.279 --> 00:26:49.359
Yeah, and here's the thing: I kept saying, you guys get to choose.
00:26:49.599 --> 00:26:56.079
We're telling you we're shifting gears on what we desire, but you can you do not have to, you're not forced into this.
00:26:56.480 --> 00:26:57.119
Yeah.
00:26:57.680 --> 00:27:01.519
Well, I number one, I think that's wise.
00:27:01.839 --> 00:27:14.400
Um, and to give them autonomy because you'd already set the precedent before of you know, we're raising you up to be responsible adults, yeah, and to go out and do your own thing.
00:27:14.640 --> 00:27:20.480
And then here you are now saying, Hey, I want us to be team patent.
00:27:21.039 --> 00:27:22.079
That's yeah.
00:27:22.480 --> 00:27:28.480
You know, I want us to be, you know, this interdependent family.
00:27:30.240 --> 00:27:57.279
And I and and I think, you know, what what's taking place is that after this, you know, summer kind of vacation meeting, you know, I almost kind of sometimes want to call it a family assembly, where that you gather them all together, you laid out the vision of where the new family enterprise is going.
00:27:57.920 --> 00:27:58.319
Yes.
00:27:58.799 --> 00:28:09.440
And again, you you reiterated, I think you even told me you reiterated in that meeting that we we want you on board, but we're not gonna make you be on board.
00:28:09.680 --> 00:28:16.400
Okay, and your family, whether you choose to or not to, we're still family, you're not excluded if you choose not to.
00:28:17.519 --> 00:28:20.799
So, and uh I I like what you said.
00:28:20.960 --> 00:28:27.839
Um, you know, again, before we started recording, that this was just the start.
00:28:28.480 --> 00:28:34.640
It was a good start, and it's not over, and it's gonna evolve even more.
00:28:34.720 --> 00:29:11.039
And I think that's the the good thing about you know just us continuing this conversation and recording it a little bit, Chris, down the road as we as we kick the can, so to speak, down the road, and we kind of can look back, say in the next couple months and say, all right, here's what what we saw that God did, you know, through things, because you know, I know that you've been kind of working and festering over this and kind of frustrated a little bit, kind of almost like in a holding pattern until after this time right here.
00:29:11.200 --> 00:29:12.000
Yeah, yeah.
00:29:12.319 --> 00:29:18.640
And you know, I think um, you know, you'd you've taken the right approach.
00:29:18.720 --> 00:29:21.519
Uh, I'm just kind of reiterating this things that are important.
00:29:22.160 --> 00:29:28.799
You know, you have this micro conversations with your with your kids, but you also got in alignment uh with Kim.
00:29:30.160 --> 00:29:33.680
You know, you you got in alignment with her.
00:29:34.480 --> 00:29:39.200
Um, not so much about you, she actually got you thinking differently.
00:29:39.519 --> 00:29:40.559
Yes, for sure.
00:29:40.720 --> 00:29:59.920
But for example, Tyler, we went to, you know, when I hit January 1st with this new picture, I said, I need to learn, and I want her learning with me, not every single step, every single class, so to speak, but I want her kept up with what I'm thinking and what I'm seeing.
00:30:00.000 --> 00:30:02.240
So we went to three different conferences.
00:30:02.319 --> 00:30:16.799
We did one in January, one in February, one in March, made it a weekend away and enjoyed the time together, but spent time in class or workshop or whatever, learning about the various facets of this generational family.
00:30:17.039 --> 00:30:18.720
It was revolutionary, right?
00:30:18.880 --> 00:30:25.759
A lot of what I saw in each of the three, I'd already read in another book or seen another podcast or whatever, but she hadn't.
00:30:25.920 --> 00:30:33.759
And then we had conversation around it each of those times and a month in between each one, giving us time to kind of simmer in it, that kind of thing.
00:30:33.839 --> 00:30:48.559
So, yes, what she and I are in alignment, and that is part of my job is to make sure that I don't run out ahead of her, yeah, and or deem her, well, she's not interested in this part, so I'll just do this myself.
00:30:49.119 --> 00:30:50.960
And I'm not dumping it on her either.
00:30:51.039 --> 00:30:55.279
It's just keep her abreast of it, keep checking checking in and talking through it.
00:30:55.599 --> 00:31:01.519
And man, she's got a better sense of what the kids will and won't respond to than I did.
00:31:02.640 --> 00:31:06.160
At least a couple, you know, at least certainly the girls, um, if not necessarily.
00:31:08.960 --> 00:31:11.440
I think I call my wife Amy.
00:31:11.519 --> 00:31:13.119
Uh, she's my holy script skirt.
00:31:13.839 --> 00:31:24.079
And uh trust me, I I need her her insight a whole lot more than my little limited brain can have uh a lot of times.
00:31:24.319 --> 00:31:27.680
Um well Chris, um, I kind of want to wrap this up.
00:31:27.839 --> 00:31:29.359
Land is playing here.
00:31:29.519 --> 00:31:56.400
Um you know, to to the viewers, to the viewers and the listeners that are out there listening to this right now, you know, if if you could go back, okay, say say someone's listening to this and they're 40 years old, what what would you tell Chris Patton at 40 about this right now?
00:31:56.559 --> 00:31:57.440
What would you tell him?
00:31:57.680 --> 00:32:05.440
So my kids would have been 12 and 14, 12, 12, and 14, and that's about the time frame that I would like to go back.
00:32:05.680 --> 00:32:09.519
I mean, I'd go back 20 years in theory.
00:32:09.680 --> 00:32:11.839
I don't really want to relive all that.
00:32:12.960 --> 00:32:14.000
I'll be honest.
00:32:14.319 --> 00:32:16.079
Teen years were tough, right?
00:32:16.240 --> 00:32:27.359
Yeah, but if I could give myself advice from here back to that time point, it would be change now your lenses and start thinking generationally.
00:32:27.759 --> 00:32:35.359
Start spending time, intentional time with the kids to have conversation around these things.
00:32:35.920 --> 00:33:00.880
Don't dump it on them, don't suddenly start, you know, hammering them with it, but just build this into your conversation, your language, and your your view of life for this next 30, 40 years for this at that point, and get it through your skull that this is what God wants out of you through your family.
00:33:01.839 --> 00:33:09.440
And my mindset is if I were to have received that then, I would start learning.
00:33:10.720 --> 00:33:12.480
Start digging in scripture now.
00:33:12.640 --> 00:33:15.440
I'm I'm looking for examples.
00:33:15.599 --> 00:33:28.400
I've started a list in my in my uh laptop, a list of scriptures and different topics that I'm seeing that I want to be able to teach over time to them that's all about the generational mindset.
00:33:28.559 --> 00:33:41.599
And it's not all only looking out three or four generations, but it's the mindset you have today that will continue generationally as long as you keep it that way, if that makes sense.
00:33:41.759 --> 00:33:49.200
It's yeah, it's so I would just I would slap myself in the face, I would say, man, you've got a different picture.
00:33:49.920 --> 00:33:52.960
This is one area where you've missed it completely.
00:33:53.200 --> 00:33:54.480
Take a look at this.
00:33:54.880 --> 00:34:15.840
And for others that are now at that age, I would just tell them dig into scripture, start praying, ask the Lord to reveal to them how and he wants them to see this picture and what are some things that they could do right now to begin that transformation within their family.
00:34:16.000 --> 00:34:45.440
You know, we mentioned family teams as a uh an organization that speaks up with a family that has kids in the home and a lot of uh traditions and and things that they do, uh rhythms that they put in place to help with that mindset so that I would be looking for others that are already down the path and built the the process, and I'd start copying and pasting, which is my norm anyway.
00:34:46.000 --> 00:34:46.639
Yeah.
00:34:48.000 --> 00:34:50.400
Man, so good, Chris.
00:34:50.559 --> 00:34:53.119
Um Chris, I appreciate you, buddy.
00:34:53.199 --> 00:35:34.000
Uh, big time uh for coming on here and being my first uh actual interview since uh it's been a long time since I interviewed anybody, but I think it's important because you know, you and I we've been walking this past for now over a year, and you know, you it's it's cool to see a nice victory and be able to celebrate that, but also kind of talk through that journey, and you know, and I know there's more victory to come, and there's more long with that struggle that's gonna happen, but uh I just appreciate you coming on here and doing that right here.
00:35:34.480 --> 00:35:35.280
Anytime.
00:35:35.519 --> 00:35:36.320
Love it.
00:35:36.960 --> 00:35:38.480
So, True Life.
00:35:38.639 --> 00:35:48.079
Uh, listen, guys, um, you know, I know that uh if you got questions or anything like that, you can obviously reach out to me um and ask some questions.
00:35:48.159 --> 00:35:50.480
Uh direct message me or whatever I've got.
00:35:50.639 --> 00:35:55.360
TrueLifeConsulting.com is the website uh that you can go on to.
00:35:55.599 --> 00:36:19.920
And uh, but again, uh we'll have Chris back on at a later date to kind of follow up because you know this journey doesn't end, and that's the thing about it is it's you know, maybe one day we might actually bring your kids on and uh interview them and listen to their story of how they've kind of bought into the family enterprise, uh the family on a mission, you know, like what you just talked about, Chris.
00:36:20.079 --> 00:36:24.320
Uh so without further ado, I'm gonna land this plane and call it around.
00:36:24.480 --> 00:36:25.519
Thanks so much, Chris.
00:36:25.840 --> 00:36:26.400
Enjoy it.
00:36:26.480 --> 00:36:27.039
Thank you, Tom.
00:36:27.199 --> 00:36:28.880
I appreciate all that you're doing.
