00:00:00.479 --> 00:00:12.160
I used to think confidence was something you needed before you did the brave thing, that you had to feel ready, feel sure of yourself, know what you were doing, and then you could take the step.
00:00:12.400 --> 00:00:23.839
But I'm starting to think I had it backwards because some of the most important things I've done in my life, I didn't actually feel very confident at all.
00:00:24.239 --> 00:00:27.280
I was nervous, I questioned myself.
00:00:27.519 --> 00:00:30.399
Sometimes I wanted to back out completely.
00:00:30.559 --> 00:00:32.560
And believe me, I tried.
00:00:32.799 --> 00:00:34.159
But I did them anyway.
00:00:34.320 --> 00:00:41.840
And somewhere along the way, I discovered that confidence isn't always what gives us the courage to begin.
00:00:42.159 --> 00:00:46.960
Sometimes, courage is what builds the confidence.
00:00:47.359 --> 00:01:03.359
In this episode, we are talking about what confidence actually looks like, why you don't have to wait until you feel ready, and how doing the brave thing, even with shaky knees, might just be how confidence begins.
00:01:06.079 --> 00:01:19.519
Welcome to Just Getting Started, a podcast about growing from right where you are, especially when you're feeling stuck, overwhelmed, uncertain, and wondering what comes next.
00:01:19.840 --> 00:01:30.159
Every day is an opportunity to take one small step, to try again, to try something new, and to give yourself the gift of a fresh start.
00:01:30.400 --> 00:01:32.799
I'm your host, Lindsay Seeley.
00:01:32.959 --> 00:01:49.519
If you want to get started on your journey when it comes to healing, health, work, confidence, relationships, grief, purpose, or simply becoming a little more attuned and aligned with yourself, you're in the right place.
00:01:49.840 --> 00:01:53.840
I believe growth happens one small step at a time.
00:01:54.079 --> 00:01:56.159
So let's figure it out together.
00:01:56.400 --> 00:01:57.439
Are you ready?
00:01:57.680 --> 00:01:59.359
Let's get started.
00:02:08.879 --> 00:02:18.879
So every so often, I catch myself in these really uncertain moments where I don't actually sound or feel very confident at all.
00:02:19.360 --> 00:02:35.120
I hear the self-doubt, I hear self-deprecation, I hear how I downplay some of my skills, or I have a really hard time accepting compliments or even seeing some of the great things that I've accomplished.
00:02:35.280 --> 00:02:41.520
I know it's crazy, but I think this struggle, especially among women, is so real.
00:02:42.159 --> 00:02:45.599
I mean, have you ever wondered what confidence really is?
00:02:46.319 --> 00:02:48.479
I think we all have this idea.
00:02:48.800 --> 00:02:51.280
We know we should be confident.
00:02:51.599 --> 00:02:56.080
We are told from the time we are little girls, just be confident.
00:02:56.479 --> 00:03:00.879
But I do sometimes wonder like, what exactly is it?
00:03:01.199 --> 00:03:04.000
It can feel so abstract.
00:03:04.800 --> 00:03:07.680
So here is how I would define it.
00:03:07.919 --> 00:03:20.080
I think it's really a combination of your knowledge, of your skills, your strengths, your talents, your capabilities, and also your potential.
00:03:20.240 --> 00:03:29.439
I think it's this like this inner knowing or this inner self-belief that no matter what happens, I can handle what comes my way.
00:03:30.080 --> 00:03:37.360
And I think there's also a piece of self-acceptance, as in, you know, this is who I am.
00:03:37.599 --> 00:03:38.960
This is what I know so far.
00:03:39.120 --> 00:03:40.560
These are my experiences.
00:03:40.800 --> 00:03:46.400
And, you know, no matter what, this is gonna be okay, or I am enough for today.
00:03:46.560 --> 00:03:48.240
I think that's confidence.
00:03:48.800 --> 00:03:54.319
And I think you do learn to be confident by knowing yourself.
00:03:54.400 --> 00:03:57.120
So this takes time and also through experience.
00:03:57.280 --> 00:04:05.039
You know what you can do, you know what is hard for you, you know what you've achieved, you know what causes you stress.
00:04:05.280 --> 00:04:08.479
So I don't think there's like a one answer.
00:04:08.560 --> 00:04:10.000
I think it's many things.
00:04:10.159 --> 00:04:22.399
But I think that basically the more you know yourself and then believe in yourself, the more confidence you will feel, and then the more confidence you will show.
00:04:22.720 --> 00:04:24.720
How's that for a simple definition?
00:04:25.120 --> 00:04:29.279
Um, but I think the problem that I have with confidence.
00:04:29.439 --> 00:04:32.000
So this is not really easy terrain.
00:04:32.240 --> 00:04:34.720
Actually, I have three problems with confidence.
00:04:35.040 --> 00:04:46.879
The first is that most of us believe or learn to believe at a very early age that it's something we are born with and we either have it or we don't.
00:04:47.360 --> 00:04:56.720
Um, it's something that I think we feel that if we didn't get it, then like we're out of luck.
00:04:56.800 --> 00:05:00.879
And if we did, lucky us, like it doesn't really work that way.
00:05:00.959 --> 00:05:04.560
But I can see how we hold on to that false belief.
00:05:04.800 --> 00:05:08.079
And with that belief, we might not work on confidence.
00:05:08.240 --> 00:05:12.639
We might not see it as a skill that needs developing.
00:05:12.959 --> 00:05:18.480
We might just almost like in a resigned way say, well, I'm just not that confident.
00:05:18.639 --> 00:05:25.120
You know, I'm not as confident as she is, or I just wasn't given that talent or that trait.
00:05:25.279 --> 00:05:28.959
And not true, but I can see, I can see the problem.
00:05:29.279 --> 00:05:32.720
And that's something that I struggle with for sure.
00:05:32.879 --> 00:05:47.120
Uh, the second problem I have is even when we do have the courage to be confident and we know from all this cultural and societal messaging that, you know, we should be confident and we can be anything.
00:05:47.439 --> 00:06:01.839
I think the tricky part, again, especially for women, is that when we do show confidence, and sometimes it's just a little amount, just saying, this is what I think, or I want this, or this is who I am.
00:06:02.160 --> 00:06:03.439
This is the skill I have.
00:06:03.600 --> 00:06:04.720
I'm really good at this.
00:06:04.879 --> 00:06:08.800
I think sometimes when we show that, it can be used against us.
00:06:09.040 --> 00:06:12.480
We can be called conceited or boastful.
00:06:12.879 --> 00:06:17.839
Um, people might think we're arrogant or quote unquote full of ourselves.
00:06:18.079 --> 00:06:23.920
And I think it could be used as a reason to like stay away from us or disconnect.
00:06:24.160 --> 00:06:35.600
So it's kind of a like a high risk, high cost trait to have when you know that it might be seen in a really unfavorable way.
00:06:35.839 --> 00:06:38.560
And that's kind of wild when you think about it.
00:06:38.959 --> 00:06:52.959
And the third, the third and final problem that I have is so many of us, myself included, um, we wait to feel ready to then do the thing that requires confidence, but we actually will never feel ready.
00:06:53.120 --> 00:07:03.920
So this is a bit of a trick or a trap because really we have to take that first brave or confident step to then do the confident thing.
00:07:04.079 --> 00:07:08.000
So I think we just have the wrong framework in that sense.
00:07:08.319 --> 00:07:14.000
And really that first step requires no confidence, but we can think it does.
00:07:14.079 --> 00:07:19.759
And then that can be our excuse or our reason not to try it all, which makes sense.
00:07:19.920 --> 00:07:26.240
But today I want to share a few things that I have learned about confidence.
00:07:26.399 --> 00:07:34.319
And I've said this before, but most things in my life I do learn the very, very, very hard way with a ton of trial and error.
00:07:34.560 --> 00:07:38.800
But um there are five things I think that I have learned the most.
00:07:38.879 --> 00:07:41.920
And I have worked on my confidence a lot.
00:07:42.319 --> 00:07:45.600
And I've come a long way and I have a long way to go.
00:07:45.839 --> 00:07:51.279
Uh, I think that work in progress is like the best phrase for when I talk about confidence.
00:07:51.519 --> 00:07:57.279
But the first thing that I've learned is that confidence is something that we just have to work on.
00:07:57.439 --> 00:07:59.120
And I mean daily.
00:07:59.920 --> 00:08:07.279
This is developing our skills and talents and doing hard things and taking risks.
00:08:07.439 --> 00:08:19.199
And it could even require like a confidence goal every day or a confidence intention, but it has to be something that we're active about, or it just won't happen.
00:08:19.360 --> 00:08:20.480
And it could be anything.
00:08:20.639 --> 00:08:28.720
It could be, you know, speaking up at a meeting, it could be maybe a physical challenge, like you want to push your fitness a little bit.
00:08:28.959 --> 00:08:33.679
It could be sharing an opinion, it could be setting a boundary.
00:08:33.919 --> 00:08:42.240
But I think whatever you do every day is only gonna help grow and build and boost your confidence.
00:08:43.039 --> 00:08:48.879
Um, the second thing I've learned is that confidence comes from competence.
00:08:49.360 --> 00:08:55.279
That is what you can do and what you are actually working on.
00:08:55.600 --> 00:09:03.679
And I have learned to track my progress so I see my growth, so I actually can prove it to myself and believe myself.
00:09:03.840 --> 00:09:05.679
And I do this every Friday.
00:09:05.840 --> 00:09:15.440
I will just list everything that I have achieved or accomplished so I know I'm working on skills and talents.
00:09:15.600 --> 00:09:34.320
And I might be, you know, writing a little bit in my book, or I might be trying to run a little bit further that day, or I might be, you know, developing a new program or some social media posts, or even working on, you know, how I express my feelings or my friendship skills.
00:09:34.480 --> 00:09:46.240
But I write that stuff down, or I think we completely like don't even see our own growth and don't get to like show ourselves that we are doing things that are contributing to confidence.
00:09:46.480 --> 00:09:58.720
So I track it and then I see it, and then I give myself credit or a high vibe, or I celebrate for a second because I think what we don't write down gets forgotten, or it gets dismissed, or it gets downplayed.
00:09:58.879 --> 00:10:01.519
And we cannot do that if we want to be confident.
00:10:02.080 --> 00:10:12.080
The third thing I've learned is that confidence isn't stable, as in we are not expected to be confident all the time.
00:10:12.639 --> 00:10:17.440
I think like feelings, confidence can really come and go.
00:10:17.759 --> 00:10:23.519
Sometimes we're gonna feel more confident, other times we're gonna feel less confident.
00:10:23.759 --> 00:10:27.120
And there are so many factors that can affect our confidence.
00:10:27.360 --> 00:10:41.600
I mean, for me personally, I don't feel so confident when I didn't sleep well, or I'm in a season of high stress, or I'm in some kind of relational conflict, or I've made a mistake or failed in some way.
00:10:41.759 --> 00:10:45.120
It's really hard to just be confident all the time.
00:10:45.200 --> 00:10:47.759
But again, that's realist, unrealistic.
00:10:48.080 --> 00:10:53.679
So we don't have to expect like this steady confidence.
00:10:53.919 --> 00:10:55.279
I think it's more like a wave.
00:10:55.440 --> 00:11:03.759
So sometimes it's high and we can notice that, sometimes it's low and we can notice that too without judgment, but it's kind of always moving and growing.
00:11:03.840 --> 00:11:14.159
And sometimes it's larger, sometimes it's smaller, but it really is variable or fluctuating and it doesn't transfer.
00:11:14.240 --> 00:11:16.879
I think that's kind of a misconception with confidence.
00:11:17.039 --> 00:11:48.960
Like I can be really confident when I speak to parents or when I'm giving a presentation, or I'm explaining a program to somebody, but I might have less confidence when I'm talking to a friend about a sensitive topic, or I might be less confident when I'm trying a new skill or like a new sport, or um when I'm even just trying to like be a good friend and like show some vulnerability.
00:11:49.120 --> 00:11:52.559
I think I definitely lack confidence.
00:11:52.879 --> 00:11:58.720
Not because I'm not confident, but because sometimes I'm not as confident in that one area.
00:11:58.960 --> 00:12:03.519
And I think that it's, you know, sometimes confidence in one area can spill over.
00:12:03.759 --> 00:12:05.919
And I think that happens over time.
00:12:06.080 --> 00:12:14.960
But I think it's fair to say that sometimes we have a certain skill set or talents or ways of being we're really confident in and about.
00:12:15.200 --> 00:12:21.679
And then there are other areas and other skills and talents where just kind of that work in progress.
00:12:21.759 --> 00:12:22.320
And that's okay.
00:12:22.480 --> 00:12:24.559
I think I've just learned to accept that.
00:12:24.960 --> 00:12:30.480
Uh, the fourth thing I've learned is you may not have a confidence problem.
00:12:30.879 --> 00:12:34.000
I know I don't always have a confidence problem.
00:12:34.240 --> 00:12:36.559
It's more like a courage problem.
00:12:37.440 --> 00:12:48.399
It is really hard to take a chance, to take a risk, to step out of your comfort zone and try something new, even if it's just one step.
00:12:48.639 --> 00:12:57.759
I think that that one step, that one move in the direction of that confident thing, that can require courage.
00:12:57.919 --> 00:13:01.919
And we literally just have to do it to then feel more confident.
00:13:02.320 --> 00:13:06.240
But I think that that is where we get really uncomfortable.
00:13:06.399 --> 00:13:13.679
That's when we get anxious, that's when we get nervous, and that's when we can tend to just procrastinate or decide we're not going to do it.
00:13:13.759 --> 00:13:17.120
And we usually will conclude that that means we're not confident.
00:13:17.360 --> 00:13:20.879
Not true, but it does happen for sure.
00:13:21.200 --> 00:13:27.519
And finally, fifthly, I have learned that confidence simply requires a lot of patience.
00:13:27.679 --> 00:13:29.600
It's developed over time.
00:13:30.080 --> 00:13:31.519
It's a practice.
00:13:31.679 --> 00:13:33.279
It is not instant.
00:13:33.360 --> 00:13:35.840
Like, I don't know, Amazon and Netflix.
00:13:36.000 --> 00:13:39.679
I think we all just have such a low capacity to wait these days.
00:13:39.840 --> 00:13:42.480
We just want that instant everything.
00:13:42.720 --> 00:13:45.840
Um, but confidence isn't instant.
00:13:46.080 --> 00:13:46.639
It takes time.
00:13:46.799 --> 00:13:50.480
It actually takes a lot of time, if I can speak from my own experience.
00:13:50.720 --> 00:13:55.759
Maybe you have uh you've been faster at confidence, but yeah, it takes some patience.
00:13:55.919 --> 00:13:59.360
It takes a lot of practice, it takes perseverance.
00:14:00.480 --> 00:14:07.360
So I have been on my confidence journey, I think with a lot of intentionality for a very long time.
00:14:07.600 --> 00:14:14.399
And I would say it's fair to say that it's probably one of my greatest struggles.
00:14:15.039 --> 00:14:24.639
I think that sometimes I can look really confident and I have achieved and accomplished a lot, but I don't feel very confident.
00:14:24.879 --> 00:14:32.639
And I think some of the feedback that I've gotten or the praise or the compliments doesn't always match my inner experience.
00:14:32.799 --> 00:14:43.440
So I would say I'm getting closer, but I would say how people see me is definitely way nicer and kinder and more positive than how I see myself.
00:14:43.919 --> 00:14:53.840
And I also think many times I've done confident things, but I haven't felt confident, but I have faked it to do the confident thing.
00:14:54.000 --> 00:15:03.840
And so what I'm working on is just having a closer alignment to how I feel on the inside and how that can appear to others on the outside, if that makes sense.
00:15:04.159 --> 00:15:06.080
But I'm getting there for sure.
00:15:06.240 --> 00:15:08.480
And I wouldn't say I'm not confident.
00:15:08.720 --> 00:15:11.519
I would just say it definitely comes and goes.
00:15:11.679 --> 00:15:22.480
Again, depending on the factors, depending on what I'm doing, depending on how I'm feeling and my skill set and my talents and capabilities and all of that.
00:15:22.799 --> 00:15:26.639
I have had many really big confident moments for sure.
00:15:26.799 --> 00:15:31.840
I mean, anytime I give a keynote speech, I think that requires a lot of confidence.
00:15:32.080 --> 00:15:39.279
Or when I sing on a stage, or for sure when I launched my first book because I was so scared.
00:15:39.519 --> 00:15:40.159
Wow.
00:15:40.399 --> 00:15:44.879
And I had to do um live TV and interviews.
00:15:45.039 --> 00:15:49.919
I even went on the show called The Social, and I was shaking.
00:15:50.080 --> 00:15:52.159
I was, I don't think I slept the night before.
00:15:52.240 --> 00:15:54.559
I was so scared, but I did do it.
00:15:54.720 --> 00:16:06.240
And I would say after I felt really good about everything, like any big confident moment, I felt really good about it, but not before and probably not during, if I'm being honest.
00:16:06.480 --> 00:16:11.519
But I think more importantly, there are a lot of really small confident moments.
00:16:11.679 --> 00:16:25.039
I mean, anytime we set a boundary, talk to a stranger, um, help someone going, we go on a first date or meet someone for the first time, or we give advice.
00:16:25.200 --> 00:16:41.600
Like I feel like these are risks that seem maybe a little bit easier or lower stakes, but I think that those small confident moments can really add up and they can become a bigger confident, you know, feeling or way of being.
00:16:42.000 --> 00:17:04.799
I think anytime we do something that is big or hard or challenging or new or scary or whatever it is for us, I think that of course it's gonna feel hard and uncomfortable and it might be, you know, a little scary or just feel like too much, it causes too much stress or anxiety.
00:17:05.039 --> 00:17:16.000
But I do think that every time we do any of those things, that we are actually building our confidence.
00:17:16.160 --> 00:17:19.519
And that's exactly how it grows, really.
00:17:19.759 --> 00:17:22.400
It's uh a slow and steady process.
00:17:22.640 --> 00:17:33.200
But, you know, the the takeaway, I think, as I reflect on confidence, is that confidence may not be something that you acquire before acting.
00:17:33.599 --> 00:17:40.799
I think perhaps courage is what you practice while confidence catches up.
00:17:41.440 --> 00:17:47.039
And the question I wanted to end with today is not a question, it's actually two.
00:17:47.599 --> 00:17:52.880
But the first part or the first one is confidence comes from knowing yourself.
00:17:53.519 --> 00:18:01.839
So if I were starting my confidence journey today, I would ask myself, what do I know about myself?
00:18:02.480 --> 00:18:05.119
What are a few qualities I have?
00:18:05.440 --> 00:18:20.400
Skills, talents, um, personality traits, and write those down and start to pay attention when these qualities or skills or talents or traits show up.
00:18:21.039 --> 00:18:32.960
So it's noticing that likely you already are confident, you just haven't fully acknowledged and accepted, accepted it, and also write down some examples.
00:18:33.119 --> 00:18:40.880
So that proof or that evidence really can solidify the belief that yes, I am a confident person.
00:18:41.279 --> 00:18:42.640
That's what we're going for.
00:18:42.880 --> 00:18:55.519
And the second question or second part is if confidence does begin with courage, as I've said a few times, what is one courageous thing you can do today to feel more confident?
00:18:56.480 --> 00:18:58.079
And I'll leave you with those questions.
00:18:58.240 --> 00:19:02.400
As always, I would love to hear from you, so feel free to reach out.
00:19:02.720 --> 00:19:07.359
And I will see you definitely in the next episode.
00:19:09.359 --> 00:19:12.000
Thanks for listening to Just Getting Started.
00:19:12.160 --> 00:19:14.240
Remember, you are not behind.
00:19:14.400 --> 00:19:18.799
You are not finished, and it is never too late to get started.
00:19:19.200 --> 00:19:23.039
Until next time, keep going and keep growing.
00:19:23.279 --> 00:19:25.759
One small step at a time.
00:00:00.479 --> 00:00:12.160
I used to think confidence was something you needed before you did the brave thing, that you had to feel ready, feel sure of yourself, know what you were doing, and then you could take the step.
00:00:12.400 --> 00:00:23.839
But I'm starting to think I had it backwards because some of the most important things I've done in my life, I didn't actually feel very confident at all.
00:00:24.239 --> 00:00:27.280
I was nervous, I questioned myself.
00:00:27.519 --> 00:00:30.399
Sometimes I wanted to back out completely.
00:00:30.559 --> 00:00:32.560
And believe me, I tried.
00:00:32.799 --> 00:00:34.159
But I did them anyway.
00:00:34.320 --> 00:00:41.840
And somewhere along the way, I discovered that confidence isn't always what gives us the courage to begin.
00:00:42.159 --> 00:00:46.960
Sometimes, courage is what builds the confidence.
00:00:47.359 --> 00:01:03.359
In this episode, we are talking about what confidence actually looks like, why you don't have to wait until you feel ready, and how doing the brave thing, even with shaky knees, might just be how confidence begins.
00:01:06.079 --> 00:01:19.519
Welcome to Just Getting Started, a podcast about growing from right where you are, especially when you're feeling stuck, overwhelmed, uncertain, and wondering what comes next.
00:01:19.840 --> 00:01:30.159
Every day is an opportunity to take one small step, to try again, to try something new, and to give yourself the gift of a fresh start.
00:01:30.400 --> 00:01:32.799
I'm your host, Lindsay Seeley.
00:01:32.959 --> 00:01:49.519
If you want to get started on your journey when it comes to healing, health, work, confidence, relationships, grief, purpose, or simply becoming a little more attuned and aligned with yourself, you're in the right place.
00:01:49.840 --> 00:01:53.840
I believe growth happens one small step at a time.
00:01:54.079 --> 00:01:56.159
So let's figure it out together.
00:01:56.400 --> 00:01:57.439
Are you ready?
00:01:57.680 --> 00:01:59.359
Let's get started.
00:02:08.879 --> 00:02:18.879
So every so often, I catch myself in these really uncertain moments where I don't actually sound or feel very confident at all.
00:02:19.360 --> 00:02:35.120
I hear the self-doubt, I hear self-deprecation, I hear how I downplay some of my skills, or I have a really hard time accepting compliments or even seeing some of the great things that I've accomplished.
00:02:35.280 --> 00:02:41.520
I know it's crazy, but I think this struggle, especially among women, is so real.
00:02:42.159 --> 00:02:45.599
I mean, have you ever wondered what confidence really is?
00:02:46.319 --> 00:02:48.479
I think we all have this idea.
00:02:48.800 --> 00:02:51.280
We know we should be confident.
00:02:51.599 --> 00:02:56.080
We are told from the time we are little girls, just be confident.
00:02:56.479 --> 00:03:00.879
But I do sometimes wonder like, what exactly is it?
00:03:01.199 --> 00:03:04.000
It can feel so abstract.
00:03:04.800 --> 00:03:07.680
So here is how I would define it.
00:03:07.919 --> 00:03:20.080
I think it's really a combination of your knowledge, of your skills, your strengths, your talents, your capabilities, and also your potential.
00:03:20.240 --> 00:03:29.439
I think it's this like this inner knowing or this inner self-belief that no matter what happens, I can handle what comes my way.
00:03:30.080 --> 00:03:37.360
And I think there's also a piece of self-acceptance, as in, you know, this is who I am.
00:03:37.599 --> 00:03:38.960
This is what I know so far.
00:03:39.120 --> 00:03:40.560
These are my experiences.
00:03:40.800 --> 00:03:46.400
And, you know, no matter what, this is gonna be okay, or I am enough for today.
00:03:46.560 --> 00:03:48.240
I think that's confidence.
00:03:48.800 --> 00:03:54.319
And I think you do learn to be confident by knowing yourself.
00:03:54.400 --> 00:03:57.120
So this takes time and also through experience.
00:03:57.280 --> 00:04:05.039
You know what you can do, you know what is hard for you, you know what you've achieved, you know what causes you stress.
00:04:05.280 --> 00:04:08.479
So I don't think there's like a one answer.
00:04:08.560 --> 00:04:10.000
I think it's many things.
00:04:10.159 --> 00:04:22.399
But I think that basically the more you know yourself and then believe in yourself, the more confidence you will feel, and then the more confidence you will show.
00:04:22.720 --> 00:04:24.720
How's that for a simple definition?
00:04:25.120 --> 00:04:29.279
Um, but I think the problem that I have with confidence.
00:04:29.439 --> 00:04:32.000
So this is not really easy terrain.
00:04:32.240 --> 00:04:34.720
Actually, I have three problems with confidence.
00:04:35.040 --> 00:04:46.879
The first is that most of us believe or learn to believe at a very early age that it's something we are born with and we either have it or we don't.
00:04:47.360 --> 00:04:56.720
Um, it's something that I think we feel that if we didn't get it, then like we're out of luck.
00:04:56.800 --> 00:05:00.879
And if we did, lucky us, like it doesn't really work that way.
00:05:00.959 --> 00:05:04.560
But I can see how we hold on to that false belief.
00:05:04.800 --> 00:05:08.079
And with that belief, we might not work on confidence.
00:05:08.240 --> 00:05:12.639
We might not see it as a skill that needs developing.
00:05:12.959 --> 00:05:18.480
We might just almost like in a resigned way say, well, I'm just not that confident.
00:05:18.639 --> 00:05:25.120
You know, I'm not as confident as she is, or I just wasn't given that talent or that trait.
00:05:25.279 --> 00:05:28.959
And not true, but I can see, I can see the problem.
00:05:29.279 --> 00:05:32.720
And that's something that I struggle with for sure.
00:05:32.879 --> 00:05:47.120
Uh, the second problem I have is even when we do have the courage to be confident and we know from all this cultural and societal messaging that, you know, we should be confident and we can be anything.
00:05:47.439 --> 00:06:01.839
I think the tricky part, again, especially for women, is that when we do show confidence, and sometimes it's just a little amount, just saying, this is what I think, or I want this, or this is who I am.
00:06:02.160 --> 00:06:03.439
This is the skill I have.
00:06:03.600 --> 00:06:04.720
I'm really good at this.
00:06:04.879 --> 00:06:08.800
I think sometimes when we show that, it can be used against us.
00:06:09.040 --> 00:06:12.480
We can be called conceited or boastful.
00:06:12.879 --> 00:06:17.839
Um, people might think we're arrogant or quote unquote full of ourselves.
00:06:18.079 --> 00:06:23.920
And I think it could be used as a reason to like stay away from us or disconnect.
00:06:24.160 --> 00:06:35.600
So it's kind of a like a high risk, high cost trait to have when you know that it might be seen in a really unfavorable way.
00:06:35.839 --> 00:06:38.560
And that's kind of wild when you think about it.
00:06:38.959 --> 00:06:52.959
And the third, the third and final problem that I have is so many of us, myself included, um, we wait to feel ready to then do the thing that requires confidence, but we actually will never feel ready.
00:06:53.120 --> 00:07:03.920
So this is a bit of a trick or a trap because really we have to take that first brave or confident step to then do the confident thing.
00:07:04.079 --> 00:07:08.000
So I think we just have the wrong framework in that sense.
00:07:08.319 --> 00:07:14.000
And really that first step requires no confidence, but we can think it does.
00:07:14.079 --> 00:07:19.759
And then that can be our excuse or our reason not to try it all, which makes sense.
00:07:19.920 --> 00:07:26.240
But today I want to share a few things that I have learned about confidence.
00:07:26.399 --> 00:07:34.319
And I've said this before, but most things in my life I do learn the very, very, very hard way with a ton of trial and error.
00:07:34.560 --> 00:07:38.800
But um there are five things I think that I have learned the most.
00:07:38.879 --> 00:07:41.920
And I have worked on my confidence a lot.
00:07:42.319 --> 00:07:45.600
And I've come a long way and I have a long way to go.
00:07:45.839 --> 00:07:51.279
Uh, I think that work in progress is like the best phrase for when I talk about confidence.
00:07:51.519 --> 00:07:57.279
But the first thing that I've learned is that confidence is something that we just have to work on.
00:07:57.439 --> 00:07:59.120
And I mean daily.
00:07:59.920 --> 00:08:07.279
This is developing our skills and talents and doing hard things and taking risks.
00:08:07.439 --> 00:08:19.199
And it could even require like a confidence goal every day or a confidence intention, but it has to be something that we're active about, or it just won't happen.
00:08:19.360 --> 00:08:20.480
And it could be anything.
00:08:20.639 --> 00:08:28.720
It could be, you know, speaking up at a meeting, it could be maybe a physical challenge, like you want to push your fitness a little bit.
00:08:28.959 --> 00:08:33.679
It could be sharing an opinion, it could be setting a boundary.
00:08:33.919 --> 00:08:42.240
But I think whatever you do every day is only gonna help grow and build and boost your confidence.
00:08:43.039 --> 00:08:48.879
Um, the second thing I've learned is that confidence comes from competence.
00:08:49.360 --> 00:08:55.279
That is what you can do and what you are actually working on.
00:08:55.600 --> 00:09:03.679
And I have learned to track my progress so I see my growth, so I actually can prove it to myself and believe myself.
00:09:03.840 --> 00:09:05.679
And I do this every Friday.
00:09:05.840 --> 00:09:15.440
I will just list everything that I have achieved or accomplished so I know I'm working on skills and talents.
00:09:15.600 --> 00:09:34.320
And I might be, you know, writing a little bit in my book, or I might be trying to run a little bit further that day, or I might be, you know, developing a new program or some social media posts, or even working on, you know, how I express my feelings or my friendship skills.
00:09:34.480 --> 00:09:46.240
But I write that stuff down, or I think we completely like don't even see our own growth and don't get to like show ourselves that we are doing things that are contributing to confidence.
00:09:46.480 --> 00:09:58.720
So I track it and then I see it, and then I give myself credit or a high vibe, or I celebrate for a second because I think what we don't write down gets forgotten, or it gets dismissed, or it gets downplayed.
00:09:58.879 --> 00:10:01.519
And we cannot do that if we want to be confident.
00:10:02.080 --> 00:10:12.080
The third thing I've learned is that confidence isn't stable, as in we are not expected to be confident all the time.
00:10:12.639 --> 00:10:17.440
I think like feelings, confidence can really come and go.
00:10:17.759 --> 00:10:23.519
Sometimes we're gonna feel more confident, other times we're gonna feel less confident.
00:10:23.759 --> 00:10:27.120
And there are so many factors that can affect our confidence.
00:10:27.360 --> 00:10:41.600
I mean, for me personally, I don't feel so confident when I didn't sleep well, or I'm in a season of high stress, or I'm in some kind of relational conflict, or I've made a mistake or failed in some way.
00:10:41.759 --> 00:10:45.120
It's really hard to just be confident all the time.
00:10:45.200 --> 00:10:47.759
But again, that's realist, unrealistic.
00:10:48.080 --> 00:10:53.679
So we don't have to expect like this steady confidence.
00:10:53.919 --> 00:10:55.279
I think it's more like a wave.
00:10:55.440 --> 00:11:03.759
So sometimes it's high and we can notice that, sometimes it's low and we can notice that too without judgment, but it's kind of always moving and growing.
00:11:03.840 --> 00:11:14.159
And sometimes it's larger, sometimes it's smaller, but it really is variable or fluctuating and it doesn't transfer.
00:11:14.240 --> 00:11:16.879
I think that's kind of a misconception with confidence.
00:11:17.039 --> 00:11:48.960
00:11:49.120 --> 00:11:52.559
I think I definitely lack confidence.
00:11:52.879 --> 00:11:58.720
Not because I'm not confident, but because sometimes I'm not as confident in that one area.
00:11:58.960 --> 00:12:03.519
And I think that it's, you know, sometimes confidence in one area can spill over.
00:12:03.759 --> 00:12:05.919
And I think that happens over time.
00:12:06.080 --> 00:12:14.960
But I think it's fair to say that sometimes we have a certain skill set or talents or ways of being we're really confident in and about.
00:12:15.200 --> 00:12:21.679
And then there are other areas and other skills and talents where just kind of that work in progress.
00:12:21.759 --> 00:12:22.320
And that's okay.
00:12:22.480 --> 00:12:24.559
I think I've just learned to accept that.
00:12:24.960 --> 00:12:30.480
Uh, the fourth thing I've learned is you may not have a confidence problem.
00:12:30.879 --> 00:12:34.000
I know I don't always have a confidence problem.
00:12:34.240 --> 00:12:36.559
It's more like a courage problem.
00:12:37.440 --> 00:12:48.399
It is really hard to take a chance, to take a risk, to step out of your comfort zone and try something new, even if it's just one step.
00:12:48.639 --> 00:12:57.759
I think that that one step, that one move in the direction of that confident thing, that can require courage.
00:12:57.919 --> 00:13:01.919
And we literally just have to do it to then feel more confident.
00:13:02.320 --> 00:13:06.240
But I think that that is where we get really uncomfortable.
00:13:06.399 --> 00:13:13.679
That's when we get anxious, that's when we get nervous, and that's when we can tend to just procrastinate or decide we're not going to do it.
00:13:13.759 --> 00:13:17.120
And we usually will conclude that that means we're not confident.
00:13:17.360 --> 00:13:20.879
Not true, but it does happen for sure.
00:13:21.200 --> 00:13:27.519
And finally, fifthly, I have learned that confidence simply requires a lot of patience.
00:13:27.679 --> 00:13:29.600
It's developed over time.
00:13:30.080 --> 00:13:31.519
It's a practice.
00:13:31.679 --> 00:13:33.279
It is not instant.
00:13:33.360 --> 00:13:35.840
Like, I don't know, Amazon and Netflix.
00:13:36.000 --> 00:13:39.679
I think we all just have such a low capacity to wait these days.
00:13:39.840 --> 00:13:42.480
We just want that instant everything.
00:13:42.720 --> 00:13:45.840
Um, but confidence isn't instant.
00:13:46.080 --> 00:13:46.639
It takes time.
00:13:46.799 --> 00:13:50.480
It actually takes a lot of time, if I can speak from my own experience.
00:13:50.720 --> 00:13:55.759
Maybe you have uh you've been faster at confidence, but yeah, it takes some patience.
00:13:55.919 --> 00:13:59.360
It takes a lot of practice, it takes perseverance.
00:14:00.480 --> 00:14:07.360
So I have been on my confidence journey, I think with a lot of intentionality for a very long time.
00:14:07.600 --> 00:14:14.399
And I would say it's fair to say that it's probably one of my greatest struggles.
00:14:15.039 --> 00:14:24.639
I think that sometimes I can look really confident and I have achieved and accomplished a lot, but I don't feel very confident.
00:14:24.879 --> 00:14:32.639
And I think some of the feedback that I've gotten or the praise or the compliments doesn't always match my inner experience.
00:14:32.799 --> 00:14:43.440
So I would say I'm getting closer, but I would say how people see me is definitely way nicer and kinder and more positive than how I see myself.
00:14:43.919 --> 00:14:53.840
And I also think many times I've done confident things, but I haven't felt confident, but I have faked it to do the confident thing.
00:14:54.000 --> 00:15:03.840
And so what I'm working on is just having a closer alignment to how I feel on the inside and how that can appear to others on the outside, if that makes sense.
00:15:04.159 --> 00:15:06.080
But I'm getting there for sure.
00:15:06.240 --> 00:15:08.480
And I wouldn't say I'm not confident.
00:15:08.720 --> 00:15:11.519
I would just say it definitely comes and goes.
00:15:11.679 --> 00:15:22.480
Again, depending on the factors, depending on what I'm doing, depending on how I'm feeling and my skill set and my talents and capabilities and all of that.
00:15:22.799 --> 00:15:26.639
I have had many really big confident moments for sure.
00:15:26.799 --> 00:15:31.840
I mean, anytime I give a keynote speech, I think that requires a lot of confidence.
00:15:32.080 --> 00:15:39.279
Or when I sing on a stage, or for sure when I launched my first book because I was so scared.
00:15:39.519 --> 00:15:40.159
Wow.
00:15:40.399 --> 00:15:44.879
And I had to do um live TV and interviews.
00:15:45.039 --> 00:15:49.919
I even went on the show called The Social, and I was shaking.
00:15:50.080 --> 00:15:52.159
I was, I don't think I slept the night before.
00:15:52.240 --> 00:15:54.559
I was so scared, but I did do it.
00:15:54.720 --> 00:16:06.240
And I would say after I felt really good about everything, like any big confident moment, I felt really good about it, but not before and probably not during, if I'm being honest.
00:16:06.480 --> 00:16:11.519
But I think more importantly, there are a lot of really small confident moments.
00:16:11.679 --> 00:16:25.039
I mean, anytime we set a boundary, talk to a stranger, um, help someone going, we go on a first date or meet someone for the first time, or we give advice.
00:16:25.200 --> 00:16:41.600
Like I feel like these are risks that seem maybe a little bit easier or lower stakes, but I think that those small confident moments can really add up and they can become a bigger confident, you know, feeling or way of being.
00:16:42.000 --> 00:17:04.799
I think anytime we do something that is big or hard or challenging or new or scary or whatever it is for us, I think that of course it's gonna feel hard and uncomfortable and it might be, you know, a little scary or just feel like too much, it causes too much stress or anxiety.
00:17:05.039 --> 00:17:16.000
But I do think that every time we do any of those things, that we are actually building our confidence.
00:17:16.160 --> 00:17:19.519
And that's exactly how it grows, really.
00:17:19.759 --> 00:17:22.400
It's uh a slow and steady process.
00:17:22.640 --> 00:17:33.200
But, you know, the the takeaway, I think, as I reflect on confidence, is that confidence may not be something that you acquire before acting.
00:17:33.599 --> 00:17:40.799
I think perhaps courage is what you practice while confidence catches up.
00:17:41.440 --> 00:17:47.039
And the question I wanted to end with today is not a question, it's actually two.
00:17:47.599 --> 00:17:52.880
But the first part or the first one is confidence comes from knowing yourself.
00:17:53.519 --> 00:18:01.839
So if I were starting my confidence journey today, I would ask myself, what do I know about myself?
00:18:02.480 --> 00:18:05.119
What are a few qualities I have?
00:18:05.440 --> 00:18:20.400
Skills, talents, um, personality traits, and write those down and start to pay attention when these qualities or skills or talents or traits show up.
00:18:21.039 --> 00:18:32.960
So it's noticing that likely you already are confident, you just haven't fully acknowledged and accepted, accepted it, and also write down some examples.
00:18:33.119 --> 00:18:40.880
So that proof or that evidence really can solidify the belief that yes, I am a confident person.
00:18:41.279 --> 00:18:42.640
That's what we're going for.
00:18:42.880 --> 00:18:55.519
And the second question or second part is if confidence does begin with courage, as I've said a few times, what is one courageous thing you can do today to feel more confident?
00:18:56.480 --> 00:18:58.079
And I'll leave you with those questions.
00:18:58.240 --> 00:19:02.400
As always, I would love to hear from you, so feel free to reach out.
00:19:02.720 --> 00:19:07.359
And I will see you definitely in the next episode.
00:19:09.359 --> 00:19:12.000
Thanks for listening to Just Getting Started.
00:19:12.160 --> 00:19:14.240
Remember, you are not behind.
00:19:14.400 --> 00:19:18.799
You are not finished, and it is never too late to get started.
00:19:19.200 --> 00:19:23.039
Until next time, keep going and keep growing.
00:19:23.279 --> 00:19:25.759
One small step at a time.
